I had no idea what to expect when I stepped foot onto the campus at Lowell High School – a short jaunt away across Lake Merced to the site of this year’s U.S. Open at the Olympic Club.

I drove past the front of the school. Once. Twice. Why not, another time. My destination was the football field, home to my first assignment as a freelancer for the Marin Independent Journal covering the season opener between Terra Linda of San Rafael and Lowell. But I didn’t know where the field was.

I peered through the windows of my car, confused.  This is exactly why I chose to arrive early – in case I had no idea where I was. It didn’t occur to me that the kids were probably wondering who the weird guy with the befuddled look on his face was, continually driving past them back and forth in front of the school.

I finally parked my car and decided to hitch it. I asked a guy in front of the school, who looked like he worked there, where the field was.

He pointed me in the direction through a small gate on the side of school – an area that did not seem very accessible, especially to a football field.

“Are you with Terra Linda?” he asked.

“No, just reporting on the game for the paper in Marin,” I said.

The older gentleman with graying hair and “SECURITY” stitched to the back of his black polo, then immediately raised his arms like he was attempting to fly.

“Well, I hope the home team wins!” he said, as he kept flapping his arms before he returned to picking up the orange cones in front of the school.

I stood there. Confused. I walked through the gates to the other side of the school. Painted on the back side of the school was a huge cardinal, depicting Lowell’s mascot in red. “Home of the Cardinals” stood out and it finally occurred to me why the man was flapping his arms.

He was trying to be a cardinal. Ah, OK.

After walking past the tennis courts and outdoor basketball courts, it sure didn’t feel like a football season opener was kicking off in about half-hour. There were no signs, no excitement, no rally whatsoever. A teacher walked by on the way to her car, looking exciting to go home.

I arrived to the gate, not knowing whether I had to pay to get in or not. Since no one was there, I walked in and looked around. I saw Lowell’s football team on the field, going through warm-ups like it was a practice. But where was everyone else? Did I get the day wrong? I glanced at my phone and it did say Friday at 3 p.m.

No one was in the stands. It was eerie in some ways.

I couldn’t help but compare it to my time as a sports editor at Canby and Wilsonville in Oregon, and seeing kids and parents tailgating in the parking lot. You knew a special event was upcoming, a place where an entire community was uniting.

Not here I guess.

The home stands were completely void of a ravenous student section. Parents were non-existent as they were probably at work. I turned to the visitor’s side. Not that much different.

Again I kept thinking to myself, where was I?

This is San Francisco, right? One of the largest major cities in the United States. But yet, I felt like I was plopped into a secluded stadium where the teams and referees were dropped off in the middle of nowhere. I immediately tweeted some pictures of what I saw.

I knew, however, that I couldn’t just sit there stunned. I had work to do.

My first order of business was tracking down a roster for Terra Linda, since that was the team I had to slant my article on. I contacted the high school about getting a roster a few days prior, but received no response. I figured, someone at this game had to know who these players were.

I approached who appeared to be a Terra Linda administrator – later I found out would be athletic director Steve Farbstein – and asked him if he had a roster and would know anyone with one.

He didn’t.

But he did point me in the direction of TL coach Damon Keeve on the sidelines, a big burly man who has been a long-time coach in the area. Steve tipped me that he saw Keeve scribble down names on a piece of paper earlier in the day, but that was about it.

Great, I thought. This was off to a good start.

I walked down to the field and waited for Keeve to finish his conversation with the referee. While waiting, I bumped into Jeremy Balan, editor and founder of SanFranPreps.com who I blogged about earlier and wrote a must-read piece on the lack of Friday night football tradition in the City. Jeremy then approached Keeve for a roster, but was turned away and told to ask after the game for names if we needed. Tremendous.

Fifteen minutes before game time for my first assignment with a daily and I don’t even have names for the team I’m covering. I glanced around the stadium again to take in the atmosphere and noticed, hey at least it wasn’t a graveyard anymore. A few parents trickled in. A couple students made their way onto the home side of the stands. Lowell’s cheerleaders started to drive up some school spirit from the “crowd.”

It was starting to look like people actually cared about the outcome of this contest. Still, it wasn’t what I was used to. No fight songs. No high school band. Not even concessions. It was as unceremonious of a kick-off I’ve seen to a football season.

The scoreboard, which was turned on prior to kick-off, naturally turned off by the time the game began. I was later told this was one of the nicer high schools in San Francisco. Academically, Lowell ranks among the highest in the City. Students have to apply in order to attend, much like a university.

The scoreboard finally clicked back on with 55 seconds left in the first half. The game went on smoothly without a hitch. It took awhile to get back into the flow of keeping football stats again, but by the end of the first quarter, I was in the groove.

After doing this for seven years, covering everything from Class 6A football with Canby to Class 1A football at Country Christian in Oregon, it was like a shooter’s touch. You may not pick up a basketball for months or years, but any real shooter will tell you they never lose their touch.

I’ll give a huge shoutout to Steve Farbstein, the Terra Linda AD, who was my personal media relations guru, giving me every name of any player I needed until the final horn even when the reserves were in. Terra Linda was up 32-8 late. I still needed names to fill up my box score and thankfully, Steve was there. He later said if I came to their home opener next week, they would have rosters and a program available. Sweet.

I remembered the experiences I’ve had covering high school football at Canby and Wilsonville — the glitz and the glamour of a well put-on community event. Television crews, The Oregonian, various other newspaper, radio and media outlets were always present. They are two outstanding high schools that run extremely well athletic programs. It’s a tradition. It’s everything you expect high school football to be.

It may not be Texas, Florida or southern California, but people in Oregon treat high school football like their own pro sports teams. It’s what they’ve got. It’s who they represent, especially in the smaller towns.

They are proud of the kids who represent them. Coaches are regarded as legends in the game for their success in their communities. The big-time talent in Oregon may not compare to other areas, but the passion is unmatched.

I told a few people at the game where I came from. I had to tell about Wilsonville’s upcoming season and how the booster club was selling season tickets and priority seating with parking privileges this year.

It was met with a few stunned looks.

The game finally ended. I conducted my on-field interviews with a couple of Terra Linda’s players – running back Austin Koblick and quarterback Harry Taylor.

During the interview with Taylor, the team suddenly decided to form a circle around us. I wondered what exactly was happening. Keeve scolded his quarterback, telling him to end the interview, put the reporter (me) in his backpocket and get out of his circle.

Welcome to San Francisco, I thought to myself.

I finished my interview with Taylor, walked up to Keeve and apologized, and he graciously accepted. Phew. I walked back to my car and concluded this was definitely not Oregon.

The thought didn’t last long and by then, a deadline had to be met, but something I’ll always remember.

Ashlie and Jason have 3 darling kids.  Jack and Twin Hannah, are age 3 with big brother Zach who’s 5.   Jack was diagnosed with ALL in January of 2012 at age Two.  (Acute lymphoblastic leukemia)  Since then he’s been on an intensive chemo/drug therapy that will continue for another 3 years.  Meeting Jack, you’d never know he is going through such a battle.   He had energy, smiles galore, and such a happy disposition during the session, it made us all smile!  (although i did wear him out, sorry Ashlie & Jason)

Jack had just received a very special package in the mail last week.  A pair of custom designed shoes from Peaches Neet Feet!  He Ran & Ran & Ran while we photographed… it was so cute with Ryan & Hannah!  He is very proud of his new shoes and we all know those Cancer Kicking shoes will help him Run to health!

So Meet the family… seriously, how cute are they!?!?!

One of the things I love about volunteering,  is meeting such great families.  Families that are going through rough times, but know the importance in life:  Health, Happiness, and Love.

As a volunteer photographer for The F.I.L.M. Project, we give our time and talents helping such families capture lasting memories.  I am the lucky one to have such sweetness come into my life!

Gearing up for the Street of Dreams this coming week, we got our display up in the Vodka bar at the Montauck Home!  We were so excited to display a new product, the Artistry Collection, this is a collection of metallic images mounted to accentuate their beauty.

This open space home was built by Delahunt homes and Designed by Whitehouse Collection… check out the vodka glasses, made from Gray Goose bottles!

Whats in an image?  It is sometimes an eye opener not only for myself but to clients, knowing exactly what a professional photographer has to account for in each and every image.    I hope this helps you understand what goes into running a studio and it’s costs.

The Session

• I’d like to think my first asset is my ART.  Photography is unique and individual for each and every client, no matter what the format, senior, family, corporate, or children s images.  At PTP, we strive to create the uniqueness that you want.  Like i have said… “we like cookies at PTP.. but we are not cookie cuter photography”.  If the style of PTP is not to you liking, then continue your hunt for a professional photographer and i hope this provides insight to what goes into running a business.
• The planning process for a session complies layers of efforts sometimes.  Time, emails, phone calls, and messages happen.   Sometimes it may be coordinating make up and fine tuning details.  This is a part of customer service I think is so important to give clients, an experience they will treasure.
• Culling, Editing, unique and personal style to your session images.  Taking an image and creating a unique piece of art, from hand retouching, editing, and tweaking it to make it ‘sing’ once it hits your hands.  Little do people know, for PTP thculling process is about triple the actual photography time.  That does not include editing time once images are ordered.  Not only do we want to have you see the best possible images, but we want them to look and feel a cut above the rest.  We strive to provide a product you will cherish for life.
• The necessities:  Professional equipment, lenses, camera body, changing room, reflectors, the list goes on…
• Did i mention session FUN?  Combine Experience, Talent a bit of humor and you get the occasional goofiness.

• The vision of the artist can be completely different f the client and if you are not personally interacting with the client on this vision, you have several different interpretations of how it will look the best.  I love that my clients like me to recommend  images that i feel are favorites from the session.  They look for ideas of using the images and guidance on how they look best on the wall.  They value the expertise and commitment to the image itself.
• The session, the ordering time, and the products.  PTP works hard to stay current on unique and amazing products. Which leads to the next issue, that NOT All photography labs are created equal.  PTP currently works with SIX different labs to find the highest level of QUALITY Images, unique products, and a LIFELONG product for you home.  There are standards that are reached to be considered a professional lab, which differ than a lab that the general population can order prints from.

A large factor for the influx of ‘photographers in the market’ the past few years is The Digital Era is there are SO many choices for your senior portraits…..Great camera’s at an inexpensive price, great talent too!

• The ‘friend’- loves to take photo’s, with the great camera’s out there, this is plentiful!
• The amateur the one that loves takes photo’s and is good, but maybe not licensed to run a business.
• The New photographers on the way to a successful business, but not understanding the depth of running a business and expenses entailed.
• The professionals experienced and educated at running a full-time photography business.

There is great talent in each category, the choices are overwhelming.  But there are people with a camera, doing good work, but not fully understanding what it takes to run a photography business.  Each and every client or job is important to us, so the more we can educate clients and other photographers, the more we can focus on creating ART.  In part education of both the photographer and the industry greatly effects pricing.

For the consumer, think about does your photographer  have proper licenses, run a legit businesses, pay taxes, carry insurance, and then charge appropriately?    You go to work to make a living and to take a vacation.  You work to pay taxes and insurance.  Does your photographer?  Sure hope so.  Often the client does not consider the artist a business person as well as a photographer.   I LOVE my job, but business comes first, photography second when i account for my time.

Here are a few professional organizations that help us greatly learn about not only photography but the business side of the industry.  I not only encourage you to check out who are members in your area at state and national levels.  As, the more our clients are educated, the easier our job is.  PTP is a member of both organizations, bringing richness to both the creative and business side.

Our hope is this post will help educate clients on what the costs of running a legitimate photography business. Hopefully this will help you choose what type of photography is best for your senior for their once in a lifetime experience, help educate you as to pricing, and each image. I had the honor of photographing one of my ‘old’ high school seniors, i will say ‘just a few years ago’ as to not age me….  Laura has graduated Grad School and has been working as an athletic trainer at Charleston Southern University.  Her fiance Mike is also a trainer, working for the Portland Pirates  (Portland, Maine!)  It was so fantastic to capture this adorable couple… they just radiate cuteness!

They decided they wanted Urban feel, a little grudge, and definitely capture Portland in the images.  So no more words….

Mike decided that he got to do enough KISSING… it was pretty fun having engagement portraits!  Seriously, they radiate fun, laughter, & delight!

Although they aren’t scenic like the Gorge waterfalls I’ve come to love, photographing the faces of people has always been fascinating to me because of the memorable expressions or emotion. The photo above is a case in point. Taken during a fundraising assembly at Wilsonville, Ore., High School, it shows two girls who are donating their hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit group that uses those donations to craft custom wigs for cancer patients, especially children. When I first saw the image above, I knew at once I would be using it for my assignment for the Wilsonville Spokesman newspaper. The girl, senior Hayley Bird of Wilsonville, was definitely not used to having a foot of hair lopped off in one go, and it clearly showed. The combination of shock and joy was magnetic even as I released the shutter.

In a similar vein, chemistry teacher Jim O’Connell, right, volunteered to allow students to shave his head once they met a pre-determined fundraising goal of $4,000, to be donated to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore. It didn’t take long to reach that mark, resulting in a string of students taking their turn to carve chunks out of what used to be a perfectly respectable haircut. Sharing the same sense of shock and joy, I caught O’Connell laughing almost to himself as a student gleefully whacks away with the clippers. A successful photograph shares with the viewer a story. And to me, both these images richly fulfill that goal.

A few years ago, i had the pleasure of working with the Curley Family once again.  All the women of the family and their children.  Kind of an angelic look…the birds, the reflections… I love my job creating such sweetness!

As i begin Day 3 of an online educational photography seminar, on my weekend, or ‘off time’, I have thought about what all we do with our ‘work’ time.  This is the life of the self-employed, with hours of  ’unknown’ work to the clients.  I personally would not choose to have any other life.    It is a wonderful, creative, life.  BUT, it is a life of business, mostly business, not just creativity.

This is my explanation…for my business, experience, and knowledge.  As the world trends increase in amazing TECHNOLOGY, increased SATURATION of photographers, and a DECREASE in education of  photographers, it’s an ongoing challenge.

For me,  it’s about creating ART through photography!

She had very limited time the day we photographed this spring so she went from make up to studio, outdoor,  OCF, then…more accents make up to add a bit of pizzazz.  All captured by the camera in such a natural way.  I wanted to play and that i got!  So much fun!  But she literally ran out of the studio to the soccer field to a game, and did this all within hours!
