It’s been over a month since I last blogged so let me get you all up to date.

On thanksgiving I went to a “Barack Obama Circle Jerk” party in Noe Valley. My friend Stephen held it and had told me that it was co-ed but only dudes showed up. We basically sat around and jerked off to Barack Obama giving speeches. I know that life is hard. I know it can hurt. I know it can drain every fiber of your being. To quote Rocky Balboa 2006, not 1976 Rocky, “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.” Always liked that quote. But, yeah, sometimes we lose sight of our goals and you don’t feel like getting out of bed or doing that paper or going to that class.

It’s good to take a deep breath, smile even though you don’t feel like it, laugh until you feel like crying, and remember life happens, don’t let it get you down. Don’t run from the problem, take it head on. There is so much more for you to do than laze about in bed all day. Keep your mind fresh, learn something new everyday, do what you need to do, and only then can you really feel good inside. Because you didn’t let life beat you to a pulp, in fact, life gave you lemons and you threw one hell of an upper-cut.

The quest for energy here in the U.S. is very apparent here in rural Pennsylvania. From my house I have views of natural gas well rigs, gas well flares, and about 60 monstrous windmills gracing a hilltop.

To have all this in view from one spot says something about the urgencey for native energy resources. I have mixed feelings about it all really. I think that tapping natural resources locally is a good thing when its done carefully and responsibly. Natural Gas extraction has many areas where if something went wrong, it could be a big deal. And its not so much if it happens as it is when it happens. We have already witnessed numerous “accidents”. One gas well nearby that was capped and awaiting to go into production sprung a leak. It was emanating bubbling natural gas through local streams and residential wells. This gas is highly pressurized underground and naturally will find the easiest route to freedom. Also, while drilling there is some disruption of underground aquifers as the drilling head passes through the aquifer. Therefore causing sediment to flow into ones drinking water well. Most companies have been very careful to make sure that any wells that are affected area compensated by providing drinking water delivered to the home until the well water clears up.

Another concern is the chemicals the drillers use to fracture the Marcellus shale with. The chemicals are used as a surfactant to aid in cracking the shale. Then sand is also pumped in to keep these cracks open after fracturing. All this takes place 6000 feet deep. The concern is wether the chemicals will creep up through cracks in rock and contaminate water in years to come. Only time will tell.

The natural gas rush here in north central pa has been overwhelming to many small towns and their residents. From going to peaceful back roads to a continuous roar of 18 wheelers, huge drilling rigs, explosions, low flying helicopters, and freight train like sounds of gas wells being flared off, one may wonder if he is still in rural Pa.

The windmills have also been received with mixed feelings. Some feel that the monstrous blades on tall poles are graceful and will attract “much needed” tourism. Others feel that it just industrializes a once pristine ridge line. I think they are neat looking…but at night when they blink red lights, I feel like I am looking over a city skyline. That leaves me very unimpressed!

On a good note, if these energy resources can be harvested safely and responsibly, I think its a good thing.

JoLene and I took a morning walk to a park called Jerusalem Garden. Among other things the Garden has a windmill! One of three in Jerusalem, it is a reminder by Holland that “We were here, too.”

On one street is this unusual sight.

No, it is not a car covered to protect it from the elements. It is an art piece! It fooled Hank for three months before he figured it out.

We looked up a Bird Observation Site, just a block away from Knesset, the parliament building. We sat in the simple wooden blind…

… and saw several species, including an iridescent, dark turquoise-colored Palestine sunbird.

We explored a high-class hotel and saw this mural.

We wanted to explore the Old City on foot, so we entered at the Jaffa Gate, which is a 20-minute walk from the apartment where we are staying. The Gate is really a gateway; where the cars enter, there is no gate to open or close.

As you see, British Bear showed up again.

And here are a few scenes inside the Old City.

Most coffee shops in the Old City are small and have a common-looking decor. The large well-lit restaurant above is the exception. We stopped here one day for pomegranate juice and coffee.

KARACHI: A company in private sector of Pakistan has announced to launch first windmill project in the country and agreements in this connection have been entered with Private Power Infrastructure Board and Hubco Laraib Energy Limited.

According to the agreement, Hubco Laraib Energy will complete the project of 84 Megawatts till 2013. The project is located 7.5 kilometers to the south of Mangla Dam.

The government has announced to provide guarantees for the attainment of loan for the company.

At least $160 million will achieved from world and local financial institutions including Asian Development Bank, IFC and Islamic Development Bank. While, local banks include Habib Bank Limited and National Bank of Pakistan.
