[Evow04] has been working hard to run Android on a Meizu M8 smartphone and we’re beginning to enjoy the fruits of his labor. The Meizu M8 is a Chinese cell phone very similar in appearance and hardware to the iPhone. The factory firmware runs Windows CE 6 but there is no official support for Android. It looks like [Evow04's] upgrade method is fairly easy; copy an IMG and BIN file to the root of the phone, backup the Windows CE portion, and then use the upgrade mode to flash the two files.

We’re pretty impressed with Android, especially the potential that it represents. Having another device that runs the OS is a good thing but at $350-$400 this isn’t any cheaper than just buying an Android phone.

Elonex is showing a new breed of mini-laptops with ARM-based processors and Windows CE. The new Elonex Smartbook has a 7 inch screen, 2 USB ports, a flash card reader, and audio jacks. It comes with a USB to Ethernet adapter, since the tiny netbook doesn’t have room for a full sized Ethernet port. It will be around the $200 which is i think the best thing about this netbook.

Mitac looks like they’re working on an MID that will be powered by the Nvidia Tegra chipset. This MID will have Windows CE pre-installed and will have a custom UI and 720p media playback. It also has an HDMI output and a TV tuner, if you’re interested. “Mitac also plans on selling the thing with a fold-out case / keyboard combo to sweeten the deal.” We don’t know about the battery life, but Nvidia said that it’s “good … for the form factor” whatever that means. We still don’t know the price – but it will be “competitive” – and the release date hasn’t been mentioned.

Mysaifu JVM is a Java Virtual Machine which runs on Windows Mobile. It is a free software under the GPLv2 (GNU Public License Version 2).

The following operating systems are supported by latest version of this JVM.

Windows Mobile 6.0

Windows Mobile 5.0

Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software for Pocket PC (Pocket PC 2003 SE)

phoneME for Windows CE, PocketPC and Windows Mobile is an implementation of the phoneME open source Java ME application platform for your Windows Mobile phone or handheld device. There are two different platforms of the phoneME virtual machine: phoneME Feature and phoneME Advanced.
Beyond precompiled binaries of these VMs for WinCE based operating systems (including PocketPC 2002, Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5), this website provides information, patches and instructions in order to compile the phoneME sources yourself.

phoneME Feature

phoneME Feature targets the low-end range of Windows Mobile devices and allows you to run CLDC and MIDP based applications, i.e. midlets.
CLDC builds more or less out of the box once you have correctly set up your build environment. The MIDP stack compiles too if you do not use the Javacall porting layer, but the PCSL and MIDP sources requires a bit more patching in order to build and run midlets. Currently, many optional JSRs have not been ported to the WinCE platform and are hence unsupported.

phoneME Advanced

phoneME Advanced targets Windows Mobile devices with more resources (memory, cpu, storage) and can run CDC based applications that are compatible with a subset of the J2SE 1.4 stack. Other profiles like Foundation Profile and Personal Profile are also supported.
The CDC and Foundation profiles require little patching. While the Personal Basis Profile does not compile at all, the Personal Profile works reasonably well. phoneME Advanced also provides a dual stack implementation with MIDP support. It is based on the Foundation Profile and runs basic midlets pretty good, but as with phoneME Feature, JSR support is rather limited.

More information about the phoneME project and these two types of virtual machines can be found at https://phoneme.dev.java.net.

Sorry, Apple iTablet fans, this isn’t your day. This right here is called the A81 MID and is has: a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen display, an ARM Cortex A8 600MHz CPU, WiFi / GPS support, and a 3,000mAh battery. The screenshot below is the UI and it’s actually Windows CE 6.0. It’s a decent-looking MID and it actually looks pretty close to that unknown Android MID that has been floating around.

If you have seen your Twitter account recently you might have seen some overlays over the profile pictures in order to show their favorite brand. If you want to do that, you have to edit your profile image in an image editing software. Still it is loss of our precious time.
You can use Avartize to do that in an easier way. It is a Twitter application that allows you to add an overlay to your Twitter picture by simply choosing an overlay and then signing in to your Twitter account. At the same time, it is possible to choose any overlay among hundreds of already created.

If you’re a Microsoft Zune HD fan – like me – it should be good news to hear that the beautiful Zune HD has just passed the FCC! And yes, it will be available in 16 and 32GB models. The photo above confirms that Microsoft’s Zune HD will be priced at $220 USD for the 16GB model and $290 USD for the 32GB model. Let’s hope there’s still that rumoured 64GB model in the making. Under the picture below is a photo of the virtual QWERTY keyboard and the Zune HD’s integrated Bing search. The QWERTY keyboard doesn’t look as good as the iPhone’s, but I’m hoping it works just as good.
Technical Level: Intermediate Problem: To test the emulation of Windows Mobile against a web service

Technical Level: Intermediate

Problem: To test the emulation of Windows Mobile against a web service hosted in localhost has been a problem for many developers. I have yet to find an official method of using the device emulator in visual studio to connect to a localhost web service.

The problem occurs because if you add a web service to the mobile device project in visual studio, it sets the reference URL to localhost. This will tell the application to connect to the localhost of the mobile device, whether real or emulated. Using the computer name may not work for many people because visual studio’s test environment will not allow calls from outside to call to the development’s localhost.

Required Tools: These are tools that I have worked with to get this to work.

Windows Vista

Visual Studio 2008

Windows Mobile SDK

Fiddler 2.

Solution: Assuming you have all of the above tools installed. We will add a proxy to the mobile device connection settings. We will get around to setting up fiddler to work with our mobile device.

Visual Studio

A specific port will need to be set on the Visual Studio Development Server to work correctly with fiddler. In the solution explorer pane, right click the web project that will be hosting your web service and click properties.

Visual Studio Web project

In the Web Tab, under Servers, select the Specific port radio button, and select a port. I am using port 81 for my development purposes.

Visual Studio Web Property

In the solution explorer where you have your mobile device project, right click the web service you added, go to properties and in the Web Reference URL block, place a dot before the colon of the port number. This dot allows fiddler to intercept the messages sent.

Mobile Web Service Properties

Secondly, we are going to change the URL in proxy located in the Reference.cs generated by visual studio. Back in the solution explorer, right click the web service, click view in object browser. I have my client side projects in another solution that I am working on so the image may differ from previous solution image.

Web Service Solution Object

Next we have the object browser showing up. Find a generated object, right click it and select Go To Defintion. This takes you to the Reference.cs generated for that specific web service.

Visual Studio Mobile Project Object Browser

At the very top of the Reference.cs file where the Service class is created, there is the URL of the web service assigned to a Url property. Place the dot after the localhost, before the colon for the port and save the file. DO NOT EDIT ANY OTHER PART OF THIS FILE. If you update the service reference, you will need to come back here and change the URL manually again.

namespace RAINMobile.RMEWService {
public partial class RMEService : System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol {

/// <remarks/>
public RMEService() {
this.Url = "http://localhost.:81/RME/RMEService.svc";
}

Mobile Device Emulator

If you have not cradled or connect the device to the desktop, run the tool Device Emulator Manager which is found in visual studio, go to the device that you want to test on, right click it and select cradle. We now need to change the proxy of the emulated device that will have a connection to our desktop operating system via the tool. Change the proxy to 169.254.2.2:8888 in the device.

Fiddler

We are going to add a custom script to re-route calls to the fiddler proxy to the machine’s localhost. In the toolbar, go to Rules then Custom Rules. The script will open, search for this function: “static function OnBeforeRequest(oSession: Session)”. In that function, add this piece of code:

if (oSession.host=="169.254.2.2:81")
{
oSession.host="127.0.0.1:81";
}

The 81 signifies the specific port set for the visual studio development server. If you change the port in visual studio, you will need to change it in fiddler script also.

Conclusion

Until an official solution to this problem is released by microsoft or the mobile device development team, this is one of the methods used in connecting the emulated windows mobile application to a webservice hosted in localhost.

Nuėjęs į Foxit puslapį radau Foxit Reader for Windows CE. Nemokamoje arba kitaip Free Evaluation versijoje nėra kai kurių savybių:

Reflow mode*

Find tool*

CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) support*

JPEG2000 and JBIG2 support*

UI localization*

Įjungiu įrenginį ir bandau atidaryti dokumentą (24MB PDF knygą) – be problemų atsidaro. Štai keletas veikianęio Foxit Reader for Windows CE screenų:

P.S. Jei kas žinot dar kokią PDF peržiūros programa Windows CE OS parašykit.

Maplin seem to have yet another curiosity up for grabs in their netbook department (Maplin are perha

Maplin seem to have yet another curiosity up for grabs in their netbook department (Maplin are perhaps the UK’s only surviving equivalent of Tandy/Radio Shack. A curious mix of electronic items and components. Always selling solar power panels whenever I’ve caught sight of a store).

Anyway they are selling a netbook for £129 which has two distinguishing features. One the operating system installed is Windows CE which is a kind of cut down Windows often found on PDA’s and the internal architecture inside this 650g mini device is ARM based which is again more often found in mobile phones.

Compared to architectures like Intel’s atom processor the ARM architecture brings the advantage of being an even lower power consumer and offering a much extended battery life. One disadvantage is that you can’t just turn around and install Windows XP because XP is just not available to run on ARM processors.

You could at a pinch try installing the recently released Ubuntu Linux for ARM and though the 4GB internal solid state hard drive & 128MB might just accommodate (OK more memory would be better) you currently don’t have a lot of other options…yet.

Outside of the UK ARM based netbooks running Windows CE and Linux have been offered below $100 and over the next few months we’re likely to see many more ARM based devices on the market running Linux and especially Google’s Android OS which at present has only be available on a very small number of phones.

So whilst Microsoft’s Windows 7,due for release in October may finally be a viable netbook OS option it demands considerably more in terms of host hardware specifications and hence will push Win7 based netbook offerings up the pricing scale. We may see a fair amount of low cost netbooks and Internet browsing devices based on ARM becoming more readily available on-line and along the high street.
