That people today, bereft of ethics and morals, would go to great lengths to obtain pirated copies of Windows 7 was to be expected.

That Microsoft, for all of its swaggering bravado but its obviously flaccid Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool, cannot detect and thwart pirated copies is galling — but cynics would claim that it is but par for the course for MSFT.

What is, however, NOT ACCEPTABLE is that Microsoft has said that it would support any and all pirated copies of Windows 7 … not in anyway trying to BLOCK updates or System Packs.

Here is a good article about this unstinted support by Microsoft for PIRATED Windows 7 by ‘Tom’s Hardware.’ Please skim through it.

I have a right to bitch. I am not just an indignant, righteous spoil-sport. I have some valid skin in this game, way beyond the fact that I paid $149 for my OEM copy of Windows 7 Professional.

The Product Key-based Windows activation system used by Microsoft was THOUGHT UP BY ME … 31 years ago. Here, I created a post, with links to the US Patents database, to prove this. Check it out. So, I kind of know what I am talking about here.

That MSFT will condone Windows 7 piracy is akin to WalMart saying that henceforth it will not crackdown on shoplifting and instead will instruct its staff to provide bags and receipts for all STOLEN GOODS.

Well, here is the TWIST.

MSFT is breaking the law!

MSFT management has a fiduciary responsibility to its SHARE HOLDERS to maximize their return on investment. I contend that supporting PIRATED copies of Windows 7 violates that!

I am calling for a CLASS ACTION SUIT against MSFT for their support of pirated Windows 7.

I have already posted in Boston CraigsList trying to bring it to the attention of CA attorneys out there. On Monday, I will post in Seattle and New York. There is a GOOD CA case here.

MSFT, better than anybody else, knows where the ISO images are being downloaded from. Of course, MSFT has folks monitoring all these ‘torrents.’

MSFT here is some FREE ADVICE from the originator of the Product Key-based activation scheme and in his youth, in the early 1970s, an original ‘hacker.’

SEED the download sites with MODIFIED Windows 7 images. Don’t do anything drastic. Just some good ‘ET Call Home’ code — really no different to what you already have in WAG, but this time around with a flag saying this copy is pirated … this is the IP. While you are at it get whatever information might be useful so that you can tell these THIEVES that you need payment of $200 for the copy of Windows 7. I don’t need to spell this out.

So that is where I sit. We need MSFT management to live up to their fiduciary responsibility.

Wegen der “WGA-Spyware”. Vor dem Bezirksgericht von Washington läuft seit kurzem eine Klage gegen den Softwarehersteller Microsoft. Klagegegenstand ist (wieder mal) die Windows XP’s Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) “Copy Protection”.

Diese wurde vom Hersteller als ein ausschliesslich auf Raubkopien konzentriertes Tool angepriesen; dagegen beschuldigen die Kläger den Redmonder Konzern, sehr wohl private Informationen auf diesem Weg erlangt zu haben, um auf diesem Weg potentielle “Raubkopierer” identifizieren zu können. Die angestrebte Entschädigungssumme wurde mit 5 Millionen USD beziffert. Das lohnt sich doch. Da kommt man doch ins Nachdenken…

Il sistema di protezione Windows Genuine Advantage (ridotto WGA), utilizzato da Windows per rilavare eventuali copie contraffatte, si è rivelato nel tempo poco affidabile e troppo facile da bypassare. In rete e nei circuiti del Peer-to-Peer (P2P) è possibile reperire diversi file eseguibili in grado di “convalidare” qualunque copia di Windows. Infatti WGA viene bypassato con un banale file di testo. Il procedimento è davvero molto semplice e immediato:

3. Fate doppio click sul file creato, così, eseguendolo inseriremo nel registro di Windows la convalida della copia del nostro sistema operativo.

Io sono riuscito a convalidare perfettamente il mio Windows XP Professional SP3 in modo da installare Windows Media Player 11, ma non ho testato il metodo su altri computer, quindi, non vi posso garantire al 100% il corretto funzionamento ma vi auguro buona fortuna!

… en ver violado su sistema de activación. Y es que no se puede decir “de este agua no beberé”, “este cura no es mi padre”, o “este Windows no se puede piratear”.

En tan solo unos días, y como ya ocurriera gracias a Dell con Windows Vista (en esta ocasión, el FAIL parece ser de Lenovo), se ha filtrado un crack que permite validar copias de Windows 7 con una clave OEM de pre-activación.

Afortunadamente, desde que salió Windows Vista no he dedicado más de 30 minutos a utilizarlo; y espero poder decir lo mismo de Windows 7 dentro de unos años. Actualmente, mi ración de Windows sólo incluye esporádicas -y cada vez más reducidas- dosis de XP mediante máquina virtual, principalmente para dar clase.

Changing a registry key!

Microsoft’s activation grace period timer, by design, lets you use a command “slmgr.vbs -rearm” up to three times to reset the counter to 30 days (for a total of 120 days grace period).

Turns out that it enforces the 3 rearm limit by ticking a registry setting when you’ve used 3 rearms, and getting 3 more rearms involves ticking the key back and using rearm again.

Every 3 rearms will tick the registry setting, so you tick it back and rearm again. Unless MS changes this, it means that you can use Windows 7 in “Grace Period” mode indefinitely by ticking a registry key once every 4 months.

Why go to the trouble of making a complicated and error prone “activation” scheme and then letting users bypass it with such an obvious work around? I think it’s because Microsoft wants Windows 7 to be popular even if it means giving away some copies for free, and the “activation” “requirement” will only snag a few idiots who were trying to make a couple unlicensed copies.

Much of the entire Windows “ecosystem” revolves around piracy.

Microsoft knows that almost nobody is going to go out and pay thousands of dollars for a few pieces of software that are just going to be outdated in a couple years anyway, so these back doors would be like an airline giving away unsold seats to prevent you from booking a seat on a competitor’s flight.

If Microsoft locked their software up tighter than Fort Knox, I suspect most people would take the trouble to learn how to use “Free Software” rather than be a few mortgage payments lighter every couple of years by remaining on the “Windows and Office Upgrade Treadmill”.

Microsoft will sell you a $350 copy of Windows if you’ll pay it, they’ll resurrect XP and dump it at almost no profit to keep Windows on netbooks, they’ll sell you a $3 copy of Windows if you live in Thailand, China, Mexico, etc. to keep you from buying  it on DVD-R from a street vendor, and if that doesn’t work, they’ll turn a blind eye and just let you steal it. Anything to keep you away from Linux and OpenOffice.

And the best part is that they can shut off the back door at any time they like and demand that you pay up… I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few million Windows users go this route and get rumbled on Service Pack 1.

(Note that I’m not going to say what registry key to tick because I don’t really want to be sued, I just found it highly unlikely that this is in Windows by accident.)

Following three simple steps now you can get rid of the pesky and sometimes buggy Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) notifications:

1. Reboot Windows in safe mode (hold the f8 key while booting and you will get the option to boot in safe mode) and then:

2. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and search for wgalogon folder and delete it. You should backup up the registry beforehand, in case somethiong goes wrong.

3. In your windows directory search for files wga* and delete them.

You are done!

Now reboot back normally and continue your work. Windows Genuine Advantage will not bother you anymore.

In the last few weeks, I’ve seen many Windows XP users confronted with a window that pops up out of nowhere to install “Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications.”Windows Genuine Advantage is Microsoft’s antipiracy tool, designed to identify pirated copies of Windows XP and make them irritating to use. So to be clear: the popup window about Windows Genuine Advantage is a legitimate Microsoft update and your computer will continue to annoy you until you install it. It’s not harmful. The truly unforgivable thing is the checkmark inserted by default after installation in a box that says, “Show me more information about the joys of running licensed software.” When you finish the WGA installation, your web browser takes you to a Microsoft anti-piracy web site.

An unexpected popup window, a vaguely described “update” out of nowhere, a rather bizarre trip to an irrelevant web site after installation – frankly, the whole experience resembles something I’d expect from a malware program, not from Microsoft.

  Weshalb? Unklar. Aber ein klassische Problemlösung: Gerät ausschalten, Gerät einschalten. Und so weiter und so fort.
• Nintendo DS Bubble Bobble Revolution: Im Remake von 2006 konnte man nicht über das Level 30 hinauskommen.
  Weshalb? Auf jedem Level gab es einen Überschurken, den man besiegen musste, um weiterzukommen. Bei Level 30 hatte man den schlichtweg vergessen.
• Skype: Fiel im August 2007 für zwei Tage aus.
  Weshalb? Ein Windows-Update hatte den gleichzeitigen Neustart einer großen Zahl von PCs verursacht, auf denen Skype aktiv war. Der ebenfalls massenhafte gleichzeitige Versuch, sich wieder bei Skype einzuloggen, zwang den Algorithmus in die Knie, der für die Verteilung der Ressourcen zuständig war.
• Windows Genuine Advantage: Konnte am 26. August 2007 auf einmal Piraten und Echtkunden nicht mehr von einannder unterscheiden.
  Weshalb? Auf den WGA-Servern war noch nicht fertig gestellter Code gelandet, der von den authentischen Windows-Betriebsystemen verschlüsselte Lizenzierungscodes verlangte, die noch gar nicht ausgeliefert waren.
• T-Mobile G1: Bei den Modellen der ersten Auslieferung führte die Eingabe des Wortes “reboot” zu einem Neustart – und zwar immer, sogar wenn man den Begriff in einer E-Mail an ratsuchende Freunde verwendete.
  Weshalb? Android verlieh basisdemokratisch jedem Anwender sämtliche Rechte und betrachtete alles, was über die Tastatur eingegeben wurde, als Befehl.
• Zune: Am 31.Dezember 2008 legten alle Modelle mit 30GB-Festplatte einen Neustart hin und hängten sich dann auf.
  Weshalb? Die Software kam nicht mit dem Umstand zurecht, dass 2008 ein Schaltjahr war, obwohl das Problem eigentlich ein alter Hut war. Ein Neustart am 1. Januar war die Lösung.
• Google: Erklärte am 31. Januar 2009 sämtliche Sites bei Suchergebnissen zu Malware-Verbreitern.
  Weshalb? Bei einer Aktualisierung der Liste der Malware-Verbreiter wurde irrtümlich ein Slash-Zeichen eingefügt, wie es in jeder URL vorkommt.

Finde ich als Übersicht ganz interessant, wobei strenggenommen sicher nicht alles als Software-Fehler durchgeht. Aber doch immer wieder schön zu sehen, dass es mit der Unfehlbarkeit nicht weit her ist und dass kleine Fehler große Folgen haben können … [dieter]

1. If you have only just installed Windows Genuine Advantage notifications, simply using the system restore function will remove the program. Then refuse to accept the WGA update next time Windows updates… Otherwise, proceed as detailed below. (NOTE: If you try these steps while you are in “Safe Mode,” step #8 is unnecessary).
2. First Try the Following:
3. - Open a CMD Line Window by Clicking on Start ==>Run ==> type CMD and Press OK.
4. - Change Directory into the System32 Folder (Like Cd c:\Windows\System32)
5. - Open a notepad Window and type the following lines:

8. del wgalogon.dll
9. - Highlight and copy to the Clipboard the three lines above
10. - now Paste the the contents of the Clipboard to the CMD Window
11. This should kill the wgatray.exe Process from the Taskbar and imediately delete both files wgatray.exe and wgalogon.dll without the need to to go through all steps bellow.
12. If that does not work, then continue and follow the steps bellow
13. Open System32 by either A or B of the following methods:
    • a)
      

      Click “Start”, “Run”, then type-in “System32“. Click “Okay”.

    • b) Find System32 manually by clicking “Start” > “My Computer” > “(X:)” (Replacing “X” with the drive letter of the host of Windows) > “Windows” > “System32″.
14. In “System32″, go to “Tools” > “Folder options” > click on the tab, “View” > Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types”. Now you can begin…
15. Check to make sure the window that comes up has a full screen of various files. The files are in alphabetical order, which makes it easier to locate the specific file.

    Find “WgaLogon.dll” and rename it “WgaLogon.dll.bak”.

17. Create an empty copy of WgaLogon.dll:
    • 

      Right click on a blank space in System32 and select “New” > “Text Document”.

    • Leave the text document empty and label it “WgaLogon.dll”. Press Enter (on your keyboard).
    • 

      You may get a warning from the above step that says, “If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?“. Click “Yes” on this warning.

18. Be ready to complete the next two steps very quickly! Find “WgaTray.exe” in “System32″ and delete it. You will then have 5 seconds to find “WgaTray.exe” in the Task Manager (the next step). NOTE: If you remove the files mentioned above while you are in “Safe Mode,” step #8 is unnecessary.
19. 

    Immediately open Task Manager. You can do this by pressing the Ctrl, Shift, and Esc keys simultaneously, pressing the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys simultaneously, or right clicking the Taskbar and selecting “Task Manager”. Click on the process tab and click end process when “WgaTray.exe” is selected. Note: If you take longer, do not panic! All that will happen is that “WgaTray.exe” will keep reapearing in the processes list (i.e. you won’t be able to delete it as required). To remove the notifications after this, return to system32. You will find two files:”WgaLogon.dll.bak” (the one you renamed) and an Application Extension (0KB) called “WgaLogon.dll”. Delete the Application Extension, rename “WgaLogon.dll.bak” to “WgaLogon.dll” and repeat the steps from the fifth one onwards (at a greater speed!!).

20. Restart your computer once you have finished. All the notification messages should be gone.

Microsoft ha rebautiza su sistema de validación en Windows 7 en un intento, según algunos analistas, de limpiar la imagen del programa antipiratería. El nuevo nombre, Windows Activation Technology, refleja la manera en la que funciona la tecnología.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) que Microsoft lanzó como un añadico en Windows XP en 2006 se incorporó en Windows Vista y lo que hace es comprobar, a través de varias pruebas incluida la activación del producto, si alguien está utilizando una copia original de Windows.

Microsoft lanzó WGA como parte de un amplia esfuerzo para reducir la piratería y la falsificación de sus productos. En un primer momento la herramienta desactivaba algunas funciones de la versión de Windows si descubría que era pirata, pero ahora se limita a avisar al usuario, a través de una serie de ventajas emergentes, de que su software es falso.

Según ha comentado Microsoft, el cambio de nombre responde a que el WGA “desarrollado en Vista y ahora en Windows 7 es muy diferentes del programa original que se añadió a XP, aunque el objetivo del programa sea el mismo”, que no es más que permitir al usuario saber que el software que están utilizando es original, afirma Microsoft.
