The simple answer is “There isn’t one”. XP had ‘Outlook express’, Vista had ‘Windows Mail client’ and now Microsoft have decided that their latest OS can do without. I’m not quite sure why Microsoft would decide that the ability to email people isn’t a core requirement in a modern operating system but with their ongoing anti-trust issues I wouldn’t be surprised if they just wanted to avoid more legal headaches.

That said, Microsoft haven’t left us totally in the lurch and they do provide an email client (Windows Live Mail) as part of the ‘Windows Live Essentials’ suite. This is available as a free download and also includes :

Windows Live call

Windows Live messenger

Windows Live Movie Maker

Windows Live Photo Gallery

Windows Live Writer

You can find this download by going to the Start Menu and typing essentials in the search field. It will then give you the option ‘Go online to get Windows Live Essentials’.

Just follow the instructions and select the items you would like to download an install.

When you launch the program you will be asked for your email account credentials. Once these have been entered just sit back and watch Live Mail go off and retrieve all your email.

So in summary, it’s slightly odd that Microsoft wouldn’t include it in the OS but at least they have made the solution simple and painless.

I know this post comes a bit later though, but I would like to share everyone on Windows Live Mail application which was developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows Live Messenger and those packages.

Recently, I reformated my notebook from Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional. Yea, I know everything wipes out except for some of my old documents. And I realised, hey, my Windows Mail (another alternative for Microsoft Outlook) was deleted. Okay, I could not find any application which I can use it to check my company emails since I have to use my company email account to access those important emails from clients. Guess what, and I went to google and I search on Windows Mail or Microsoft Outlook for Windows 7 Operating System. There seems to be no hope though I tried one solution which was to use the Windows Mail files and folders in the Windows Vista and copied over to the Windows 7 C Drive. The end result was failed! I was quite worried about this since I could not even copy those emails to my personal email account such as Gmail. So I continued to search, and I saw Windows Live Mail application which can be used as another alternative. But of cause since I was busy with work, so I did not bother to try it until today. My notebook is installed with Windows Live Messenger and not Windows Live Mail because I dislike unwanted applications to be installed onto my notebook. It took me 5 minutes to install the application. And I have managed to link it up to my Gmail and my company email. I was happy that my Gmail setup takes less than 20 seconds since the application was clever enough to identify it as a Gmail account through the Gmail account domain name. But of cause for those specified ones like company emails, the settings have to be configured correctly.

If you do not have Windows Mail or Microsoft Outlook applications in your computer to setup your company emails, then why not install Windows Live Mail application and simply configure your company email account settings given by your system administrator or network administrator?

I installed it over 9 months ago and never had any problems with it. Great for multiple email accounts. The only “issue” I ever had was that “subject” line in read messages is not that visible (light gray colored text on white background) but pretty soon I got used to it.

Hi guys!

I know I haven’t been on my blog for a while, because of school (which is another story, soon to be told ), but I still get updated on my phone. So, to get to the other side ( Twilight quote LoL ), well, I mean to the point.

I’m going to talk about the latest phishing scams on our email account, which I happen to be a victim of , but it’s resolved just this second !!!!

What’s going on ?!

Well, some people’s email accounts’ passwords have been published to the net, with the usernames and everything ! So, if you’re affected, what’s gonna happen is; as an example, let’s say that you were surfing the web, suddenly you find my email address an a blog post with the username and password to access it, you’ll access it ( if you’re a hacker or just curious ) and you’ll start messing up with my things !

That’s what will happen once you’re email’s password is exposed.

Which email providers have been affected ?

Unfortunately, all email providers have been affected , these are quotes from what they wrote on their blogs (Hotmail, Yahoo!Mail then Gmail) :

As of 3pm PT: We want to provide a quick update, that as a result of our investigation we are taking measures to block access to all of the accounts that were exposed and have resources in place to help those users reclaim their accounts.

If you believe your information was documented on the illegal list, please fill out the following form to reclaim access to your account.

—

Over the weekend Microsoft learned that several thousand Windows Live Hotmail customers’ credentials were exposed on a third-party site due to a likely phishing scheme. Upon learning of the issue, we immediately requested that the credentials be removed and launched an investigation to determine the impact to customers. As part of that investigation, we determined that this was not a breach of internal Microsoft data and initiated our standard process of working to help customers regain control of their accounts.

Phishing is an industry-wide problem and Microsoft is committed to helping consumers have a safe, secure and positive online experience. Our guidance to customers is to exercise extreme caution when opening unsolicited attachments and links from both known and unknown sources, and that they install and regularly update their anti-virus software.” If you believe you’ve been a victim of a phishing scheme, it’s very important that you update your account information and change your password as soon as possible. More information on what to do is available on this page at our support community.

Microsoft recommends customers use the following protective security measures:

Renew their passwords for Windows Live IDs every 90 days

For administrators, make sure you approve and authenticate only users that you know and can verify credentials

As phishing sites can also pose additional threats, please install and keep anti-virus software up to date

Keeping you safe while you’re online is a top priority for us here at Yahoo!. One important part of your online safety is making sure that nobody else can access your Yahoo! Mail account without your permission, and the best way to do that is to make sure you choose a good password and make sure nobody else knows it or can easily guess it.

I know it can feel like a pain typing out a more detailed password, but none of us want to make it any easier for the bad guys.

My top advice is to be mindful of any Web page that requests your Yahoo! password. The #1 way people get their passwords stolen is by typing them into lookalike “phishing” web sites, pages that pretend to be Yahoo! or another trusted Web site but actually are run by the bad guys. Scrutinize carefully any page that requests your Yahoo! password. In addition:

Make sure the Web page address doesn’t have any misspellings or extra words (e.g. http://www.yah000.com, http://www.yahoo-members.com, or http://www.yahoo.BadGuyEnterprises.com) in it. When it doubt, go straight to http://www.yahoo.com and log in from there.

Be vigilant about anything that doesn’t look right on the page, such as typos, outdated content, or broken or missing pictures.

Best idea: be sure to set up a customized “Sign-In seal” picture — instructions are at https://protect.login.yahoo.com/ — and never enter your password unless you see that picture on the page.

Here are a few more tips to help keep you safe online:

Don’t use the same password on multiple sites. Your Yahoo! Mail account is important to you, so it deserves its own password. That way, if the unthinkable happens on another site, at least your Yahoo! mailbox remains secure.

Never send your password over email. Yahoo! will never request your password from you in an e-mail; if you ever receive such a request, you should treat it as fraud. Do not pass “Go!” Instead immediately click the “Spam” button on that message.

Protect yourself with a virus scanner. Another way passwords get stolen is from a virus that records your keystrokes. Don’t give the bad guys that option: There are a number of anti-virus companies that offer free versions or trial offers, including (in no particular order and with no specific endorsement implied) http://security.symantec.com , http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/free-virus-scanner.php, http://us.mcafee.com/root/downloads.asp?id=freeTrials, and http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html.

Unfortunately there is no silver bullet against these criminals and con-men, but hopefully these tips will help us all keep the bad guys at bay.

As part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we’d like to take this opportunity to remind you about smart password practices. Help ensure you’re protecting your computer, website, and personal information by checking out our security series on the Google blog or visiting http://www.staysafeonline.org.
Phishing, a topic that’s been in the news, is unfortunately a common way for hackers to trick you into sharing personal information like your account password. If you suspect you’ve been a victim of a phishing attack, we recommend you immediately change your password, update the security question and secondary address on your account, and make sure you’re using a modern browser with anti-phishing protection turned on. Keep an eye out for the phishing warning Gmail adds to suspicious messages, and be sure to review these tips on how to avoid getting hooked.
Creating a new password is often one of the first recommendations you hear when trouble occurs. Even a great password can’t keep you from being scammed, but setting one that’s memorable for you and that’s hard for others to guess is a smart security practice since weak passwords can be easily guessed. Below are a few common problems we’ve seen in the past and suggestions for making your passwords stronger.

This is cool. In some countries (the rest coming soon apparently) you can add extra email accounts into your hotmail service to get all of your mails in one cloud-based location.

Once it’s available here I’ll be all over this. Right now I use outlook and want to move away from locally stored email with clunky pst files and whatnot. I have already added all my contacts into Live mail and as they offer a pretty nifty calendar too then it’ll be a nice little one-stop-shop. And as it’s cloud based it’ll be wherever I am (or would be if I ever went anywhere!).
A small simple touch I like is the wizard lets you specify a folder to send the email from the extra account to, which as the anal person I am, will be cool for keeping things where they belong.

How to add account/s to Windows Live Mail

Follow the Windows Live Mail (WLM) installation instructions. After WLM is installed in your computer you must enable POP/IMAP/SMTP setting for each email account before you can use them in WLM. Use any browser and log in to your email account (Yahoo, Gmail, Live etc). To enable POP access for:

Yahoo Mail
Options > POP Access and Forwarding > choose Web & POP Access > Save

Start your WLM application (Start > Windows Live > Windows Live Mail). A pop-up will ask you if you want to add an email account or not, in which you will answer by entering email address and password. Wait for few seconds and done!

For additional accounts, you can set up as many accounts you want to by clicking ‘add email account’ at left side panel.

You need to register/change to @yahoo.co.uk or any other yahoo mail region in order to use this function for free. No subscription is needed for any other regions (including Malaysia).

Next I will show you how to use WLM and manage your accounts.

introduction

Most of us use the internet like we living in it. From the total of almost 7 billion people around the world, more than 1 billion of us (23% !) are internet users [1]. We have blogs, emails, and some of us are managing shops on the internet. But do we need to be online for hours just to check the email? And how about this; super slow loading page, especially if you use wireless broadband. Start from this part, I will teach you how to get stick to the internet without the need to sit in front of your pc for hours.

desktop email client

Email client is a program that you can use to manage emails. That is, you can send or receive emails from popular email service (Yahoo, Google, Live, etc) right from your desktop. You can download most of the clients for free [2]. The best client I ever use is Windows Live Mails (WLM), developed by Microsoft [3]. If your operating system is either Vista or Windows Xp, then go to their website and grab the Live packages. No charges, absolutely free.

Since I changed to WLM, I have been monitoring all my 11 email accounts without any problem. Next I will teach you how to add an email account to WLM.

Back in March, I presented pros and cons of managing e-mail with webmail and with Outlook. Take a look at that post first if you’re new to this blog. Since I use Outlook 2007, it was that version that I based my evaluation on for that post.

Since then, I’ve discovered Windows Live Mail, a souped-up version of Outlook Express, Microsoft’s free e-mail client. I’ve been using it exclusively for a couple of weeks, and I love it! As with anything new, there was a bit of a learning curve, but I think I’ll be sticking with it for the time being. I still have my Outlook 2007 if I change my mind, though.

Read the detailed comparison of WLM, Outlook and Outlook Express by the WLM developers here. The developers are talking about their own product, but I think their glowing evaluation is justified. It does all the things that Outlook 2007 can do, and its FREE.

My favorite feature is the provision for multiple e-mail accounts. I use a Gmail account for my writing and conference communications and a Windows Live (Hotmail) account for personal messages. I also monitor a couple of Gmail accounts for organizations I belong to. Each e-mail account is listed separately, and your incoming and outbound messages are contained within that account’s section. With Outlook, all incoming messages come to the same inbox, and it’s up to me to sort them out and be sure I respond from the correct account. With WLM, as long as I’m functioning within my Gmail account section, my messages send from that Gmail account. With Outlook, you have to remember to choose which account you send from before you click the Send button.

My second favorite feature is the Unread messages section. A picture is worth 1,000 words, so take a look. BTW—you get to choose the color for your background. I chose the coral.

Once you you’ve read all your unread messages, they appear in the Inbox for the specific account they belong to. Neat! I recommend that everyone try it. You can download Windows Live Mail FREE at this link. Help is easy to find as you set up your accounts.

I welcome comments from anyone who has a differing opinion or something better to recommend. I especially welcome comments from anyone who uses Mozilla Thunderbird. That’s one e-mail client I have not tried.

È disponibile in 35 lingue differenti.
