At first, I wouldn’t want to release this article. But after I see there is so many people who over fancy about Windows 7 and willing to pretend not seeing its disadvantage but continue on bashing Linux, so I have decided to publish this article.

As you all know, Windows 7 is officially released at 22nd October 2009. It is serve as a replacement of Windows Vista. I’m sure a lot people wondering why is Windows 7 release so fast while Vista only on the market officially just for 2 years time? I will explain that later.

Vista was released 30th January 2007. It had been a long waited OS from Microsoft by a lot of people. But everyone was very frustrated with the result as Vista was consuming too much disk space, RAM etc. The minimum requirement that Vista require is too high, until most people not able to catch up. A lot of people was forced to upgrade the PC just to be able to install Vista.

Developing world for developers – Windows 7 upgrade – By Dan Ness, Principal Analyst, MetaFact

Developing world for developers – Windows 7 upgrade – By Dan Ness, Principal Analyst, MetaFacts

Software developers can create the most incredible applications, but will people want them? With Microsoft’s newest upgrade to the Windows operating system, the first question PC vendors and software developers alike ask is how soon users will upgrade. Or, will they wait until they buy their next PC?

Behavior and intention are two strong indicators to start with. As part of Technology User Profile, MetaFacts asked over 30,889 PC users around the world about their plans to upgrade their operating system. We also asked them whether they acquired their previous operating system with their computer or separately.

Three of the five BRIC-M countries: Brazil, Russia, and India’s Upper Urbanites ranked highest in what they say they want to do and what they’ve done in the past. Nearly half of the Russian online adults we surveyed acquired their last operating system separately from their PC, as did over a third of Brazilian online adults and nearly a third of India’s Upper Urbanites. This has as much to do with the weakness of major PC brands in these countries as it has to do with the economics of buying and using PCs.

Piracy is potentially an issue as well, since in two of these three regions, one-fifth or more agreed that it’s acceptable to use unlicensed software at home or in the workplace.

Three additional countries worthy of note as potentially strongest markets for the Windows 7 upgrade: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Germany, and China’s Urbanites. Each of these countries is ranked in the top five in either their OS purchase plans or past upgrading experience.

Some of Microsoft’s strongest markets – the UK, US, France, Netherlands, and Japan – are at the bottom of the list when ranked by intention and behavior. It may be that these seasoned PC veterans – 25% or more of whom who have used a PC for 13 or more years – have been through enough versions of Windows to have them wait and see.

To answer these and many other questions, MetaFacts conducted its 27th wave of Technology User Profile, surveying over 45,000 online and offline adults in 16 countries for its Global Insights Edition. The multi-modal multi-phase study was conducted using a careful combination of offline and online methods.

I expect the first wave of Windows upgraders to come from Germany, Australia, Spain, and Italy, taking these and other factors into account. These will be followed by the UK, the US, and France. After that, the newest crop of notebooks from HP and Dell are the most likely direction users will go to enjoy this newest Windows version.

About this TUPdate

MetaFacts releases ongoing research on the market shifts and profiles for Windows Vista, Mobile PCs, Workplace PCs, Home PCs, Moms and Dads, Web Creators, Broadband, and many other technology industry topics. These TUPdates are short analytical articles in a series of specific topics utilizing the Technology User Profile Annual Edition study, which reveals the changing patterns of technology adoption around the world. Interested technology professionals can sign up at www.metafacts.com for complimentary TUPdates – periodic snapshots of technology markets.

Well I kind of did this just for fun since I already took a look at Windows 7, Vista, and XP I thoug

Well I kind of did this just for fun since I already took a look at Windows 7, Vista, and XP I thought I would look at ME, the spiritual ancestor to XP. Windows ME was released for one thing, to be a home operating system, unlike Windows 95 and 98 which were designed to do both home and work. ME was all about digital media and at the time it was just really taking off. My first Windows based computer would run Windows 3.11 Windows for Workgroups and then later Windows 95. My parents would have Windows 98 and 98 SE and I got a computer with ME. I hated 98 with a passion. I constantly had problems with their computer and it seemed to me like I had less problems with ME. This may be due to the fact that I was running an Intel Pentium 4 and they were running an AMD K6-2, I told them to get Intel but they did not listen, and it was the last time they did not listen to my advice I might add. Anyway for me growing up with 3.11 and 95, ME felt just like them, yeah a little buggy but I used it for years and did not give it up until after Service Pack 1 was released for XP because I still had programs that would not run in XP even with the compatibility tab options. It is also interesting to note that Windows 2000 was released on February 17, 2000 while Windows ME was released on September 14, 2000 so ME is newer than 2000 and that is why there are different features between the two, also Microsoft was already combining the Home and Professional lines of Windows into one product. So let’s take a look at where we came from, let’s look at our past and check out my list of five new features in Windows ME.

1. System Restore was a good edition to Windows, however it did have a nasty habit of backing up viruses, spyware, and all. It was a step in the right direction and saved my butt a few times. Take a look at the interesting interface that seemed to not fit into ME at all.

System Restore in Windows ME

2. Compressed Folders, finally Zip file support was a part of Windows. I still use this to this day. I think this was the best thing about ME and was glad to see it stay in every Windows version since.

Compressed Folder in Windows ME

3. Windows Movie Maker was started in Windows ME. This little program was actually pretty neat considering it came with the operating system unlike iMovie for Mac which was part of iLife which was purchased separately. iMovie was much better than Movie Maker but Movie Maker still did basic editing. This program would evolve as Windows did and now is a separate download for Vista and 7. You can download the new version of Movie Maker at http://download.live.com/moviemaker

Windows Movie Maker in Windows ME

4. MSN Messenger, Windows ME was the first version of Windows that came with MSN Messenger. It was replaced in Windows XP by Windows Messenger and in Vista all that was left was an icon to download Windows Live Messenger. I remember using MSN Messenger to talk to my friends on Hotmail a lot when I was younger. You can download the newest version of Windows Live Messenger for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 at http://download.live.com/messenger/

MSN Messenger in Windows ME

5. Windows Media Player 7, while Windows Media Player is not new, this was the first one to have a skin to it that would become familiar. Windows Media Player went from looking like any other program to being something that stood out and was a lot more functional. While the newest version, version 12 is not available for download yet you can get version 11 for Windows XP at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx

Windows Media Player 7 in Windows ME

It is interesting to see where we are today in computing and look back at where we were. I wonder what will come next as we move on. I hope you enjoyed this blast from the past. I sure did.

Well, that’s what many folk at Microsoft will be saying and it looks to me like they’re

Well, that’s what many folk at Microsoft will be saying and it looks to me like they’re going to make it. I mean, I’d actually be forgiven for thinking I should trade in my crusty old linux desktop for a Microsoft Windows 7 Desktop. But, I have to say, Microsoft are SOOOOO lucky that Apple didn’t come up with a Windows killer and the open source (or linux as so many people incorrectly call it these days) movement haven’t figured out how to maintain a stable operating system yet.

Yeah, so Microsoft might actually make a good operating system this year, go figure. I honestly thought that they’d completely lost the plot. I mean, I even heard from a reliable source that anyone who had anything to do with Vista was actually fired. It surprises me though, how many respected colleagues actually tried to convince me that Vista was OK, I did note that no-one was prepared to say it was awesome (probably for fear of ridicule) but it just goes to show what good ole Microsoft brainwashing and Marketing can do. Now, I’m not trying to say that all Microsoft OS’s were bad, let’s take a quick look shall we?

For the sake of this I’m going to start at Windows 95, yes there was Windows everything else version, I personally experienced, 3.0, 3.1 and windows for workgroups 3.11 and before that MS-DOS. I think from memory to install Windows 3.11 to your average 60MB hard drive was no less than 13 1.44MB floppy disks including MS-DOS 6.22 (people don’t know what they’re missing with 1 dvd these days) .

Windows 95

But I digress, Windows 95 came out and boy was it something to talk about. Weighing in at an awful 40MB and a minimum of 4MB RAM – (people were saying this was ridiculous at the time) but still, no-one had seen anything like it. It had animated icons for starters, smooth graphics, promise to standardise games and lived up to it, plug and play, less blue screens (BSOD’s) direct x, all sorts of stuff to make things easier for both the consumer and the developer. I can actually remember convincing many many people to ditch Lotus 1-2-3 (a spreadsheet application) for Microsoft Excel because it was better AND converting no less than probably 2000 seats….. that is personally and in a very short time frame. Knowing what I know now, I have to wonder how much Microsoft did to make Lotus 1-2-3 run badly on Windows 95, but that’s another discussion.

So, what do I hear you all screaming? I know, I know Windows 98SE!!!! Yes yes, but first I need to mention, Windows 95 came out in 3 versions that I know of, gracefully entitled Windows 95a, Windows 95b and Windows 95c. The major difference as far as I’m concerned is that with the ‘b’ version and thereafter was that Microsoft introduced the fat32 file system. Basically that meant smaller file cluster sizes on the disk, less wasted space and support for larger hard drives. Unfortunately most people actually had windows 95a installed which was quite dissappointing. In fact I remember mostly b and c versions being available as only OEM versions. OK, OK, I know, Windows 98.

Windows 98

Windows 98 was crap. Sorry 98 lovers, you weren’t expecting that were you. You know why it was crap? Because it gave us nothing. Well, it gave us slow boot up times, annoying shutdown times and more blue screens than ever before. I’ve had this argument many times, but it’s true, when it comes down to it I could run everything I could run on 98 much more easily on 95 and it was lighter, faster and more reliable. Yep, only negative thing was you had to install more drivers on 95 since the newer hardware required it. But… for an OS that came out in 1994 what do you expect! Yes yes, there was windows 98SE (second edition) better, but didn’t cut the mustard I’m afraid and if you think otherwise you’re either uneducated, a moron or simply didn’t have the experience with 95 to know what I’m saying is true.

Windows ME (Millenium Editon)

I actually kinda liked this operating system, or at least what it appeared to be when you first installed it. Promising faster bootup times, etc etc, but you soon realised, if you went round your neighbourhood with a pooper scooper wrapped all the findings in newspaper, lit it, jumped on it. then ate it, it would still be more tasteful than Windows ME. I remember one review of ME saying it had a cute name but that was the end of it cause’ Windows ME did not stir visions of ‘Cute’ in anyone’s mind at all. In fact I had one friend say that Microsoft should have been forced to give refunds for this OS (Operating System). Thinking back, this is actually when my parents started saying, “How come it’s not against the law to sell people software products that don’t work?” All the questions started coming out. Yet somehow the Microsoft Brainwashing was still in full effect. Looking back I know I was brainwashed too and I know many people that still are, many of them actually work at Microsoft unsurpisingly. It’s amazing the excuses you can come up with, “Well, software is so complex it’s hard to maintain”, true, but unforgivable.

Windows 2000

Let’s not forget windows 2000 was released in the same year as Windows ME. Actually this was one of Microsofts really good operating systems. I won’t say it was completely groundbreaking, but…. it was the first very stable, desktop and server operating system that took the good bits of windows NT 4.0, windows 95 and slapped them together. I recall I was looking after no less than 30 Windows NT 4.0 servers all on seperate tower hardware (no virtualizaion then) running all sorts of applications and I NEVER had to reboot any of them. Others can not say the same, but I have to say that there was certainly some seriously good stability going on here, I could even say years between reboots. And I still LOVE Microsoft Exchange 5.5 for the same reasons, stable, reliable and did what it was supposed to.

Windows XP

Unforunatately for Microsoft, Windows XP was verging on the the edge of crap for so long (like 8-9 years I think) that many people have jumped ship to the ‘Linux’ or Apple camps. Again yes, I know, everyones saying how can you say that?! Well, I suppose you could say I’m wrong in the sense that it’s been the only platform of choice in use by so many companies since it was released in 2001, but while it may have answered some prayers to start with, it’s been a stagnant puddle of mosquito infected stale seawater ever since. OK, OK, maybe that’s slightly overstating it, it wasn’t mosquito infected, but come on guys, with a lifecycle of 8 years so far and still counting can’t you do better than that? And where’s the innovation that got you the cream of the Operating System wars back in 1994? We haven’t seen it for… um let me see now (get’s calculator out) 15 years!!! 15 years!!!!???? Shite, now that’s embarrassing, no, that’s extremely embarassing.. 15 years, the gazillions of dollars that MS have to show for their OS (mostly because of the groundbreaking introduction of Windows 95) and almost no innovation to show for it since?!!!! Again, I hear you screaming, applications etc. Sorry, this is an OS discussion, and to be honest there’s not too much groundbreaking stuff in applications anyway, it’s still that standard Microsoft SQL server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Office, etc etc.

Windows Vista

I dont’ think I need to say anything much here, mainly because everyone knows this OS is rubbish, it’s worse than rubbish, it’s a complete pig. But there is one thing that should be pointed out, Microsoft wanted this OS to be the next big thing, they wanted it to be the new groundbreaking Operating system that everyone would rave about. Even Microsoft could never have ever predicted how much raving would be done, that is, raving about how bad it was! Their hopeful operating system was causing them more bad press than anything ever before, even more than Windows ME (possibly due to the increased proliferation of the internet since those days) and this was one embarrassment that seemingly could not be fixed. They had to do something about it and fast. People were looking for alternatives even when they believed no alternatives existed, this was bad bad bad. Perhaps the evil empire was finally falling?

Windows 7

Well, if all the chances hadn’t been burnt already (it’s amazing how forgiving the public is) Microsoft had what I would call a last ditch attempt at making something decent. They knew they couldn’t repeat the Vista experience or they’d be the laughing stock of the entire Information Technology sector and this would seriously cause doubt in all aspects of their operating systems and applications. If one thing is for certain, whether you think open source is competition or not, it is surely a major conversation point and as soon as someone figures out how to make the open source operating systems have a long and stable lifespan, (while still maintaining compatibility with recent applications), there will be something serious for Microsoft to contend with. Open source applications on the other hand are actually something to start fearing today, and they know it. So guess what? Microsoft actually employed some ex-linux people, ex-Novell emplyees for one I do believe to architect the security side of things for a start. AND then there is minwin. Linux zealot’s have been going on and on about minimising the kernel for so long now it’s ironic to see Microsoft following suit, but then that is what Microsoft does best doesn’t it? Stealing other people’s ideas, integrating into one all encompassing operating system that you’re forced to buy due to compatibility issues??? I’m not sure this is so great for the public, even though it is what made Windows 95 so great, but you may recall also caused many court cases Netscape being one of the more major ones.

Anyway, for the record, the rc versions of Windows 7 look completely awesome. The minwin kernel seems to have made the biggest difference, speed, startup times, software compatibility the whole bit is as close to top notch that I’ve ever seen since windows 95. I just love knowing each day I shut down my PC it will only take a few seconds, no more getting irritated at how much the traffic’s building up while I’m waiting for it.

Welcome back Microsoft, nice to see you got there in the end, maybe you should employ more linux people.

Summary

Well, to be honest, I don’t really care about software ideas and who stole them, I just want the simplest, least time consuming operating system that I can use as a ‘tool’ to do what I need to do. At this moment Microsoft looks set to take the world by storm with Windows 7 and I hate saying it because over the last few years I’ve built up a bit of hate for Microsoft, but credit where credit’s due, well done, though I guess the proof of the pudding is yet to come out.

As for the linux guys, back-end servers you guys have it covered….. mostly, sort of. You need to find a way to stabilise everything without the insanely consistent updates introducing more bugs and more dependency hell. From my limited 6 or so years linux experience I’d say it would come from restricting library versions but I don’t know. There’s nothing worse than wanting the latest version of something 1 month after you got your shiny new operating system and finding out you can’t have it because it’s not compatible anymore. You guys can do better! And guess what, that’s why Microsoft wins in the desktop arena, 8 years later you can still install the latest version of some particular application and not worry about needing a library just look at Windows XP!!!!

The Windows Boot Manager (Bootmgr) entry is not present in the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store.

The Boot\BCD file on the active partition is damaged or missing.

Solution

There are some methods to resolves this error are as mentioned……

Method 1:—-

Repair the BCD store by using the Startup Repair option.
You can use the Startup Repair option in the Windows Recovery Environment to repair the BCD store.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Try to insert Microsoft Windows Vista installation / Bootable disc in the CD ROM Drive, and then Restart the computer.
4. And then there is option Click Repair your computer.
5. Try to choose the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.
7. Then Restart the computer.

Method 2:

Rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool.

If the previous method does not resolve the problem, you can rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. First insert the Microsoft Windows Vista Installation or Bootable CD or DVD in the CD ROM or DVD ROM Drive and then start the computer.
2. During Start you will be prompted to press any key for further setup then Press Any KEY.

3. And then Select a LANGUAGE, a TIME, a CURRENCY, and a keyboard layout and settings or another input method, and then click Next.

** If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it shows the installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type Yes. After Pressing YES a confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was ADDED successfully.
** If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.

Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

* Forçar o Windows utilizar a memória Swap somente quando a memória RAM estiver totalmente utilizada, para isso coloque a linha abaixo na seção [386Enh] do arquivo SYSTEM.INI:
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

* Configuração de pastas (apenas no Windows ME)

* Usar pastas clássicas do Windows

by Danny J. Stevens

Please read the disclaimer under the Legal tab on this blog site, before reading or attempting to work on your PC.

Some symptoms of a slow system could actually be an indication of physical failures within the system. A hard drive may be failing and the error rate could be the cause of slowness. Memory may be faulty or some other component could be draining resources from the system.

The good news is that a slow system is not always the product of failing hardware. Where I used to work I would suspect either a hard drive issue, malware or potential virus, or maintenance of the file system and general cleanup. Below is a brief look in to each area;

1.) A failing hard drive would likely show signs of errors when trying to save files, or unable to locate files. Extremely long seek times (time where the drive is seeking the location of the information on the drive – also known as seek errors).

With regular maintenance of your PC, going thru this check list every couple weeks, once a month you will see these task will keep your computer running at the best possible performance for your system.

We are not speaking about a system which is several years old running Windows ME, Windows 95 or Windows 98. We are speaking mainly about Windows XP. However these tasks can be used to help optimize even the system listed above. The older operating system should be examined for possible upgrade. Not all systems will functions properly, so do not rush out and attempt to load a new operating system. That topic will have to be for another time.

2.) Checking for the existence of Malware, Adware and viruses is the next step. I have used these Anti Virus packages; McAfee, Symantec and AVG. Check with your Internet Service Provider as they often will have an Anti Virus package for you to download and install on your pc. Check with your company as well. If you are a Civil Service Employee check with your IT department as you have access to Anti Virus software.

For McAfee click on this link http://home.mcafee.com/Store/Downloads.aspx

For Symantec click on this link http://shop.symantecstore.com/store/symnahho/en_US/ContentTheme/ThemeID.1795800/pbPage.NAV09wide?ipd=InterstitialChall&ipln=true

For AVG click on this link http://www.avg.com/221?type=ps3925e

There are many types of adware and malware checkers out there. I personally have used this product and you may wish to look into this product as well. Ad-Ware Anniversary Edition from Lavasoft click on this link to download a free version http://www.lavasoft.com/

I will cover general cleanup and maintenance of the file system in another blog entry.

Are you considering to take the Windows 7 switch? Well according to this survey, 84% of the respondents say they will not upgrade to Windows 7. Interesting enough, about 50% are seriously considering Non-Windows OS. Seems to me Ubuntu’s main man, Mark Shuttleworth is right after all. Personally, I don’t understand the whole Windows 7 hype is all about. Windows 7 is just shaping up to be Windows Vista 2.0 or maybe Windows Millennium Edition 3. Well, what do you expect, Microsoft just have a good marketing machine (I’ll give them credit for that), but it doesn’t necessary equate to having good quality software products (time and time again). So NO, no Windows 7 for me.

OS/360 (1964)

Incompatible Timesharing System (ITS) (fines de los ‘60)

GNU Hurd (1983)

Windows 1.01 (1985)

MS-DOS 4.0 (1988)

SCO Open Desktop (1989)

JavaOS (1996)

Windows Me (2000)

Lindows – Linux XP Desktop (2001-2006)

Windows Vista (2006)
