Event log:

1.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W32Time
Event Category: None
Event ID: 47
Description:

2.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: W32Time
Event Category: None
Event ID: 29
Date: 17.11.2009
User: N/A
Computer: DC04
Description:
The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 15 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time.

3.

Event Type: Information
User: N/A
Computer: DC04
Description:
The time provider NtpClient cannot reach or is currently receiving invalid time data from ntp.mydomain.ua
(ntp.m|0×1|192.168.0.50:123->10.10.72.17:123).

Event ID: 24

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W32Time
Event Category: None
Event ID: 24
Date: 18.11.2009
Time: 6:46:56
User: N/A
Computer: DC03
Description:
Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from domain controller pdacemul.addomain after 8 attempts to contact it. This domain controller will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new domain controller from which to synchronize.

Querying target system called:
ntp.mydomain.ua
Attempting to resolve name to IP address…
Name resolved to 10.10.72.17

UDP port 123 (ntp service): LISTENING or FILTERED

LISTENING or FILTERED”

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Type

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\AnnounceFlags

w32tm /register

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer

Default Domain Controllers group policy
Default Domain group policy
Computer configuration/Administrative Templates /System/Windows Time service/Time Providers

w32tm /register

w32tm /monitor

dc01.addomain [192.168.0.60]:
ICMP: 0ms delay.
NTP: +0.0009899s offset from pdcemul.addomain
RefID: pdcemul.addomain [192.168.0.50]
dc03.addomain [192.168.0.20]:
ICMP: 0ms delay.
NTP: -0.0014416s offset from dc04.addomain
RefID: pdcemul.addomain [192.168.0.50]
pdcemul.addomain *** PDC *** [192.168.0.50]:
ICMP: 0ms delay.
NTP: +0.0000000s offset from pdcemul.addomain
RefID: ntp.mydomain.ua [10.10.72.17]

Computerworld Novo serviço vai oferecer pacotes de ERP, CRM, sistemas para processar nota fiscal ele

Computerworld

Preço do serviço

Enviroman (Oliver Sills, Product Manager for AppSense Environment Manager) was in the office the oth

Enviroman (Oliver Sills, Product Manager for AppSense Environment Manager) was in the office the other day, pestering me about signing a petition to change the Environment Manager “colour” from green to Tangerine – something to do with some UK footy club. I told him the Budgie Smugglers don’t look any better in Tangerine, so stop sitting on my desk

Just about then the phone rings, it was a Solution Architect from a large software company. “Tell him about Personalization”, Environman whispers in my ear. I covered the phone, told him to go way, and went back to the call.

Turns out one of his clients was trying to deploy 600+ Virtual Desktops, and it had just dawned on them that Policy, Profiles and the User Personality had become a nightmare to maintain when using a Non Persistent Pooled Desktop environment.

Think about it – each user, every time they log in, has a brand new base model PC.

This Client did a Proof of Concept – easy – P To V a couple of desktops, load a client, connect in using RDP – jobs a good’un – look Mum no hands – I’m doing VDI

So then they ticked all the boxes, app compatibility – tick, ease of use – tick, centrally managed and deployed – tick, user acceptance – tick, user personalization – tick – hey, not so fast.

You CAN have a tick in that box if you are talking One to One, dedicated hosted virtual desktops for a small number of users – otherwise, you need to think again.

It’s like when I started talking to the Aussie market about AppSense back in 2004 “Yes I hear what you say, but I’ve only got 5 servers – it’s not a problem” 6 months later “Yes I hear what you say, but I’ve only got 10 servers – it’s not a problem” 6 months later “Our farm is out of control, now we have 15 Citrix servers we now understand what you guys were on about 6 months ago”

As we always say – we don’t hold a grudge – and we don’t ever say “I told you so”. After all we’re from AppSense – we’re here to help

Virtual Desktops are starting to ramp up, and unfortunately with some clients projects, the devil will be in the detail.

Like the client we are now helping, they thought the “Profile Stuff” built into the VDI solution would be the easy bit. “There’re tools built into the base product” they say – yes there are, but those built in tools can be compared to other in-built free software like NTBackup – yes it will backup a file, but it’s not granular enough, and it just won’t cut it in an Enterprise environment – that’s why companies invest in a Third Party backup products.

AppSense is exactly the same. Built in “Profile” tools or features are o.k. for a simple small deployment where one size fits all, but the reality is most organisations will need more. The reason for this is simple, profile management tools are there to solve profile issues such as bloat and logon times.. they are not designed to be cross platform, cross delivery mechanism personalization solutions, not to mention the need for policy action control also.

It’s just not as easy as saying “We use Roaming Profiles and redirected folders” – try reimaging every PC in your business, every morning, and see if it causes a few hassles for users.

So we keep plugging away out there – educating the market in advance, some clients “get it” up front and they’re the ones with the smooth running, no surprises VDI projects.

As for the rest of you – we’ll be here, happy to answer questions, happy to show and tell – all with passion and enthusiasm.

After all – we’re from AppSense – we’re here to help

When a Windows machine stops unexpectedly, a ‘dump file’ of information about the crash

When a Windows machine stops unexpectedly, a ‘dump file’ of information about the crash is written to %systemroot%\windows .dmp.

This file contains information that will assist you in determining the cause of the stop:-

List of drivers loaded at the time of the crash

Details of the stop message

Details of the process that crashed/stopped

There are several types of dumps that Windows can create, these are

a)A complete memory dump, which basically does exactly what it says on the tin. The entire contents of physical memory at the time of the crash are wrotten to the dump file. This type of dump is the default on Windows Server. Your page file must be of a size at least equal to the amount of physical memory in the machine, plus 100mb for the header. NOTE – this isn’t available on machine with more than 2GB, in which case the default is a kernel memory dump, written to the same location. ADDITIONAL NOTE – creating a complete memory dump on a machine with at or close to 2GB of physical memory can take several minutes.

b)Kernel memory dump – Smaller than a complete memory dump, this contains kernel mode pages in physical memory at the time of the stop. The size of the dump varies as it depends on the amount of memory allocated to kernel mode at the time.

c)Minidump (Small Memory Dump) – a 64k dump file is created which contains details of loaded drivers, stop code and details of the thread that caused the crash.

You can change what type of dumpfile your server creates by right-clicking My Computer, selecting Properties from the context menu to bring up the System Properties dialog and then clicking the Advanced tab.

Windows Recovery Options Dialog

Which type of dump should you use? I tend to stick with the defaults – a full dump on a system with <2GB physical memory, kernel dump on systems with >2GB

Analyzing the dump file

If the file you are analyzing is a MiniDump, you can use dumpchk.exe from the Windows Support Tools. For the other types, I use the Windows Debugging Tools.

Here’s how to set the dubugger up and use it to analyze the dump file.

1. Grab the Windows Debugging Tools from http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/Debugging/default.mspx and install them

2. Find the tools on your start menu (under All Programs..Debugging Tools for Windows) and open WinDbg

Windows Debugger Symbol Path Dialog

3. In WinDbg, go to File and choose Symbol File Path. Enter the following in the box:-

srv*c:\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

and click OK to close

Analyzing the dump file

4. In WinDbg, go to File..Open Crash Dump. Locate the MEMORY.DMP file you want to analyze and click Open.

Analyzing the dump file

5. The dump will be loaded and you will see the information recorded at the time of the crash. To run a bugcheck analysis, type !analyze -v.

In this case, iostor.sys is the likely cause

6. Read the analysis, it will often be able to help you pinpoint the cause of the stop – look for the MODULE_NAME or IMAGE_NAME, PROCESS_NAME etc for clues.

This is especially helpful for tracking down problem drivers – if you find a driver is indicated as the cause, make sure you are running the latest version. If you are, it may be worth contacting the vendor and providing your memory dump for analysis.

As it turns out, diskpart v5.2 does not support either the online disk command nor the format quick command, which is why I have had to add OS filtering (got to love the one-liner and the format command.

I have also had to remove the $_.DriveType -eq "3", as an unformated primary partition under Windows Server 2003 R2 does not have a drivetype defined. But in order to salvage some honor, I’ll call that optimization, as it is actually not required, because that part of the script only assigns drive letters to volumes without one, and both the floppy and CDRom have one already.

Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary für November 2009

KB973565: Vulnerability in Web Services on Devices API Could Allow Remote Code Execution
This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Web Services on Devices Application Programming Interface (WSDAPI) on the Windows operating system. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected Windows system receives a specially crafted packet. Only attackers on the local subnet would be able to exploit this vulnerability.

KB974783: Vulnerability in License Logging Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution
This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows 2000. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an attacker sent a specially crafted network message to a computer running the License Logging Server. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the system. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect networks from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter.

KB969947: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Remote Code Execution
This security update resolves several privately reported vulnerabilities in the Windows kernel. The most severe of the vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user viewed content rendered in a specially crafted Embedded OpenType (EOT) font. In a Web-based attack scenario, an attacker would have to host a Web site that contains specially crafted embedded fonts that are used to attempt to exploit this vulnerability. In addition, compromised Web sites and Web sites that accept or host user-provided content could contain specially crafted content that could exploit this vulnerability. An attacker would have no way to force users to visit a specially crafted Web site. Instead, an attacker would have to convince the user to visit the Web site, typically by getting them to click a link in an e-mail message or Instant Messenger message that takes the user to the attacker’s site.

KB973309: Vulnerability in Active Directory Could Allow Denial of Service
This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Active Directory directory service, Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM), and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Service (AD LDS). The vulnerability could allow denial of service if stack space was exhausted during execution of certain types of LDAP or LDAPS requests. This vulnerability only affects domain controllers and systems configured to run ADAM or AD LDS.

KB972652: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution
This security update resolves several privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

KB976307: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution
This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Word file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

Aside from PowerShell, I spend a bit of time day-to-day in Oracle’s SQL*Plus. I’m slowly replacing

Aside from PowerShell, I spend a bit of time day-to-day in Oracle’s SQL*Plus. I’m slowly replacing my dependency on SQL*Plus with PowerShell scripts, functions, and such, but there are some core things that it’s just easier to bring up a console and hack out.

One thing I really love about SQL*Plus is the ‘ed’ command. The ‘ed’ command dumps your last statement into a temp file, then opens it in Notepad. Make your changes in Notepad, save, and rerun (in SQL*Plus, it’s a single slash and then Enter), and the frustration of lengthy command line editing is solved.

So, this is a work in progress—my attempt to simulate the same process in PowerShell.

Example Situation

Let’s say, for example, we have a long command we have been hacking away at, but are getting tired of arrowing back and forth on:

$count = 0; sq mydb “select id from reports” | % { $count++ }; $count

(Yes, yes, it’s not ‘very long’, but that’s why this is called an example!)

So, a simple row counter.

The ‘ed’ Command

To recreate the ‘ed’ experience, I need two things:

Access to the command line history via get-history.

A temporary file.

touch c:\temp.tmp

get-history | ?{ $_.commandline -ne “ex” } |

? { $_.commandline -ne “ed” } |

select commandline -last 1 |

%{ $_.CommandLine} > c:\temp.tmp

np c:\temp.tmp

Stepping through the code:

Create a temporary file. I used c:\temp.tmp, but you could get a bit fancier and use the systems $TEMP directory or something.

Get-History. This returns an ascending list of your command history in PowerShell by ID and CommandLine. We want to ignore any calls to our ‘ed’ or ‘ex’ functions and grab the “last 1”—then insert it into our temp file.

Finally, open up the temp file in NotePad (np is an alias on my PowerShell profile for NotePad2).

So now that I have my ed command, let’s try it out after I’ve already ran my simple row counter.

Cool. We can now make changes to this and SAVE the temp file. The next step would be to jump back to PowerShell and execute the updated command.

The ‘ex’ Command

Since the slash has special meaning in a PowerShell window, I simply named this script ‘ex’ instead. Ex… execute… surely I can’t forget that, right?

get-content c:\temp.tmp |

% {

$_

invoke-expression $_

}

The ‘ex’ command is pretty simple.

Get the content of our temporary file from get-content.

For each line (since get-content returns an array of lines), print out the line as text and then invoke (run) it using invoke-expression.

Invoke-Expression takes a string as a command (from our text file) and returns the results. For more information on Invoke-Expression, check out MSDN.

Wrapping It Up

Now that we have our two commands—ed and ex—we’re ready for those “oh, this is short and easy” commands that turn into multi-page monsters—without fighting tabs and arrow keys.

As I said, this is a work-in-progress. I’ll update the post as new/better ideas come up.
