Also die bekannten Tricks angewendet. Dienst Windows Update stoppen (net stop wuausvc) den Ordner “SystemRoot%\Software Distribution” löschen und Windows Vista neustarten. Kein Erfolg.

800703e6 Invalid access to memory location & Windows Vista SP 2 (KB948465) keeps failing – get code WindowsUpdate_8007049

Neuinstallation, aber was?

I am slightly disgruntled that this blog only sees the more geeky side of me, and all of the more normal posts get pushed to other services, blogs and the sort. The reason behind this is because I feel like the vast landscape of the posts outside of this blog are should be veiled in some sort of anonymity. Although there is nothing inherently wrong with the posts, I have many reasons to believe that the posts can cause more issues than their are worth being linked to my name and thus get pushed to other posts. I assume from some quick sleuthing work one can determine some sort of correlation in my posting times, or some sort of inverse relation between posting here and other places.

That said, bring on the video games. This week has been pretty awesome. New computer, with a 9800gt video card. so far every game that I have played I have just cranked it up to ultra and played. Although my sleep schedule has been pretty aberrant, I have not been happier for a long time now. It is a quad core i7 with 8 effective cores due to hyper threading. Also 6GB of ram, and 750gb of hd. in general it is very quiet, except for a nice fun gaming session, but even still this is blocked out by my sound system.

In addition to gaming I have begun to do virtualization of node03 and the sort so that I can start developing again. I have been living with vista for a bit, since windows 7 is in the mail. HP has a program giving away copies of 7 for people who bought hp machines. The three main issues I have with the current machine have nothing to do with the hardware, but the software.

1.) Vista 64bit, still is fucking awful. Some of the HP software is fighting with it, and I will run into random programs dieing from time to time. Although you might say that this is the fault of the third parties, however vista will just crash from time to time, with nothing running. I am hoping that windows fixes this somewhat. but I guess that I more believe that the computing industry is going though this growing pain of transitioning to 64bit, and that is causing a huge issue on many sides of computing. on the linux box at work, IDL segfaults every time that I quit. on Snow Leopard, Marc has many issues with all the normal things that work on my 10.5 box. and so forth. I had some though that they would sandbox all of the 32 bit programs and only allow 64bit tested programs out of it, to save many of the issues with this conversion. Honestly I do not know what is the root cause of all of these issues, but it seems like that is the majority of the problems.

2.) Windows Update. For years I have left windows update off, since it would sometimes cause issues with drivers and windows pushing instable security fixes. I have left in on to find that it is god awful. it will decides to take a full core or two to install an update, and lock up the disk. (ok, I guess this would be an hardware issue, but a minor one if Windows was not a fucking hog) And one would think that they are not pushing out that many updates, but that I have a new machines… no. over the last three days I have updated every day with some other inane update, all of which was after a full 4 hours of downloading and installing updates the day I received the machine.

3.) Norton Internet Security. Every time I go back to the main stream anti virus companies, I understand why people are scared of computers in general. NIS leaves lots of the understanding and just pushes crazy amounts of warnings to users. Like it flagged a downloaded file, as being bad, but said nothing about where it was, or what the file name was without some extra clicking. Besides it bubbly yellow interferences, it kills the disk bandwidth by scanning all the time, slowing down this fast computer. (honestly, I have not even come close to maxing out the system and although I have enough cores now not to notice as much, I do notices a huge disk usage drain.) Earlier I was just browsing the web, and the disk was a frenzy doing whatever Norton thought was best for the system.

But other than that, Games have been amazing. Dirt, Burnout Paradise and Torchlight have all blown me away how nice, and awesome the game play has been.

ps. Since original onyx, is pretty much all but down for the count, I have decided to replace onyx with this machine. [ AMD K6 processors with 96mb of ram, is not worth resurrecting at the time being. ] This might change when I go to seven, as that I have always been a fan of se7en.

Microsoft has releases several new patches for Windows Update. The patches are designed to fix 15 vulnerabilities in Windows and Office products. One of the patches involve a critical flaw found in the Windows Kernel. The kernel controls everything in Windows from booting up to running applications. Several of the other patches involve security holes in Windows that could allow a hacker to take remote control of you computer. They also have added two viruses into the Malicious software removal update. If you are using Windows for your operating system you need to visit Windows Update and download all critical patches. All Windows user should also run the Microsoft Software Removal Tool to verify that your computer is free of viruses.

Mac has also released several new patches for the Snow Leopard OS. These patches are designed to fix over 40 vulnerabilities in the OS. I know that most MAC users think they are safe from internet threats but I can assure you that your are not. MAC has been gain more and more market share and as they gain market share so will the amount of viruses, spyware and rootkits designed specifically for the MAC.

I log on and go to update.microsoft.com/microsoftupsdate, etc. etc. It asks me if I want the express or custom. I say express. The screen says “Welcome to Microsoft Update. Checking for the latest updates for your computer…” and the little green bar slides across the page. Again, and again, and again. This scenario continues long enough for me to make and drink a cup of coffee.

According to the log, XP did update on November 4, so maybe everything is OK. But just to be on the safe side, I decide to check. The little green bar is still running, so I step away from the computer. This time I cook and eat breakfast and clean up the kitchen. When I return to the computer I see a message: “The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.”

I had to copy and paste the error number 0xC800042D because I took those 0s (zeros) for Os (capital letter). In the process, the thing reset the text alignment in this blog from rag right to rag left, changed the font to something I’ve never seen before, increased the type size to humongous, and changed the color from black to gray. At least I know how to fix that stuff.

The first option is FAQs. The suggestion is to change the security setting to default mode. I do that, reboot and try update again. The little green bar is running, so I decide to pay month’s worth of bills while I’m waiting. Try to open a new tab but the update stops. So I do non-Internet stuff. Of course Word slows to a crawl, but I don’t have to be anywhere for a couple of hours, so I’ll let it play while I clean step away from the computer, again.

Ten minutes later, I get the same message. Now I turn to the “Solution Center,” which sends me to the “Knowledge Base.” The entries there apply to Vista, and I’m running XP.

I put the error message number in a Google search and come to something called Microsoft Answers. It’s telling me to modify the registry. Think I’ll pass because when I open the window it tells me not to mess around in there. I also notice that there is someone who has encountered the same problem who has some extremely un PG things to say about the engineers at Microsoft and their inability to admit they screwed up.

I think I’ve finally found a string that mentions my error. It says the security features must be turned off or lowered. But, Microsoft doesn’t recommend even temporarily disabling the firewall or “third-party” antivirus software. Since I’m on Explorer at the moment, I will most certainly not choose that option. Later in the day, I am thrilled that I didn’t lower the security because my antivirus software caught and squashed two bugs. These things don’t happen when I’m running Firefox.

Next, I try to add Microsoft update and Windows update to trusted sites, but they don’t have the secure “s” at the end of the http prefix, so I wasn’t allowed to follow that suggestion.” If Mr. Bill wants us to trust him, why can’t he be secure?

There is another option called BITS, but I’ve had unhappy experiences with computer alphabet soup and decide to forget that suggestion as well.

I’ve now looked at Methods A through F. I scroll down a bit further and find Advanced Methods A through C. And below that “Additional error code information for advanced users.” There I learn I’ve got a Hexadecimal Error Code. It’s tied to the Decimal Error Code -939523027 and the API Error Description HrVersonStoreOutOfMemory. Oh dear.

Right below that is a little box that asks if the information solved my problem; was the information relevant; and what can they do to improve the information? The answers are, no, the information didn’t solve my problem; I have no idea whether the information was relevant because I couldn’t follow any of the suggestions. My recommendations for improvement, which I am not sending to Microsoft, are as follows:

1) Make suggestions that don’t put the computer at risk of a virus;

2) Make suggestions that don’t require reconfiguring the hard drive;

3) Get someone with an understanding of the English language to write the “Knowledge Base” entries.

Having wasted a good part of the day trying to straighten out this mess, I’m switching back to Firefox.

P.S., my next computer will probably be a Mac.

Here’s an excellent article from SANS, the computer security gurus of this world. I think it

Here’s an excellent article from SANS, the computer security gurus of this world. I think it’s great advice and information for everyone.

Paul

Keep an Eye on Window’s Security Icons. The icons in the Notification area (located on the Taskbar usually near the lower right corner of your desktop) provide important information about the security of your computer. Pay particular attention to the icons for Windows Update, Windows Security Center, and your security software.

Heads-up! If you see only a few icons or none at all, odds are they’ve been hidden. Unhide them:
http://www.techf5.com/archives/unhide-view-hidden-icons-on-taskbar/

- – Windows Update. A yellow shield with a black exclamation point in the middle near the lower right corner of your desktop in the Notification area. This icon comes and goes. It appears when Windows Update is busy downloading or installing critical security updates intended to patch security holes and help keep your computer safe. When you touch the icon with your cursor, a bubble message tells you what Auto-Update is doing. It may be busy downloading updates. Avoid logging off or shutting down your system until the download and installation are complete. If it has finished downloading updates, it may be waiting for the nod from you to install them. Click on the icon and tell it to go ahead. Or your computer may need to be restarted in order to complete the installation. The sooner you restart your system, the sooner the updates will take effect.

Heads-up! The Auto-Update icon won’t appear if Automatic Updating is
turned off. Make sure Auto-Update is turned on and has the recommended settings:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Turn-automatic-updating-on-or-off

If it’s been some time since updates have been applied to your computer, Automatic Updates will do its best to get your system caught up, and you’ll be seeing a lot of that yellow shield icon for a while. Keep touching it with your cursor whenever it appears, and when prompted, do your part to keep the update process going. Also, if you cannot get Auto-Update to turn on or think something has gone wrong, call the help line provided by the maker of your computer, your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or a computer consultant.

Heads-up! Sometimes when you select Shut Down, your computer will ask you if you want to “Install updates and shut down”, or will just tell
you it’s going to install updates. It’s very important that you let your computer go ahead with installing updates. Do not shut it off manually.
Updating could take an hour or more. It pays to be patient. Also, Microsoft will NEVER send you an email telling you to click on a link to get software updates. If you get such an email, it’s bogus.

- – Windows Security Center. A red shield with a white X in the middle near the lower right corner of your desktop in the Notification area. This icon comes and goes. (You may also see a balloon message.) Whenever the icon appears, that’s your queue to find out what’s gone wrong. Click on the icon or the balloon to open the Security Center, which tells you the status of the (software) firewall, Automatic Updates, and your Virus Protection. When all is well, you will see three green bands. A yellow band means that an adjustment is needed; follow the onscreen instructions. If you see a red band, an essential security system is not working. Avoid using your computer until it is working. Your best course of action is to call the help line provided by the maker of your computer, your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or a computer consultant.

Heads-up! A common cause of Windows Security Center alerts is that your security software is not working or is out-of-date. Read the explanation for the alert, and then click on “Recommendations.” Chances are it is time to renew your subscription. If your subscription is not current, your computer will be vulnerable to malware (viruses and worms). Do not wait for it to expire.

- – Your Security Software. This icon should appear on the Taskbar at all times. Every brand of security software has its own icon or icons, many of which are round or shaped like a shield. Identify the icon for your security software by touching the unfamiliar icons at right end of the Taskbar, near the lower right corner of your desktop in the Notifications area. A small pop-up or balloon will tell what you have. Common security software brands include Symantec, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, Sophos, Panda and BitDefender. Security software icons often signal an alert by changing color, flashing, or popping up a message. Pay attention to any change in the icon’s appearance. It may be good news-that your security software has been updated successfully or has blocked a threat to your system-or that it’s time to get out your credit card and renew your subscription.

Heads-up! If you can’t find an icon for security software, your system may not be protected against malware (viruses and worms). Play it safe by not using your computer until you are sure that your security software is working and up-to-date. Also, while many PC’s come with security software pre-installed, these are often limited-time trial versions that expire after 30-90 days. Security trialware generally lets you know in no uncertain terms that it is expiring, so send money!

* Quick Checklist
- – Make security icons visible on the Taskbar. Keep an eye on them.
- – Enable Automatic Updates. When prompted, do your part to get them
installed and working.
- – Use good-quality security software, keep it updated, and do not let it expire.

The Internet Engineering Task Force has warned about a zero day flow in the SSL protocol that encrypts the communication between computers. The SSL layer is what encrypts your private information such as credit card number, address and other private data about you. The reason why this is such a major issue is that it is a zero day flaw. A zero day flaw means that flaw is currently being exploited in the wild and that is why it is critical it gets fixed ASAP. The risk to people who make purchases online is slim because to take advantage of this flaw you must have a highly advanced understand of how computers and programing. Over the next couple of week you will start to see patches for Internet Explorer, Firefox and all servers that have internet connections. When the patches are released all internet users will need to download them immediately to assure a high level of computer security.

We have talked about Identity several times in our blog and on the site and how to protect yourself. The one thing you can’t protect yourself from is corporate America having a security breach and your private information being exposed. The study was interesting in that people didn’t really understand the direct relationship between a security breach and identity theft. Everybody needs to understand that when a corporation has a security breach that means your private information (Social Security Number, address, credit card number) is at risk. The question you have to ask is what information did they have and how can it hurt you? This information is generally send outside the United States and sold on the black market. Criminals then take this information and open credit cards in your name in other countries. The internet has allowed criminals to conduct identity theft all over the word. If you get a notice that your information has been compromised you need to take is seriously. You should place a security watch on your credit report.

Usually windows update didn’t work in squid here’s a way that works for me. Create a tex

Usually windows update didn’t work in squid here’s a way that works for me.

Create a text file named windowsupdate.txt in your squid configuration directory.
Place these entries in it:

windowsupdate.microsoft.com
update.microsoft.com
activex.microsoft.com
download.windowsupdate.com
www.download.windowsupdate.com
codecs.microsoft.com
stats.updates.microsoft.com
c.microsoft.com

Then edit your squid.conf file. Create a new acl:

acl WindowsUpdate dstdomain -i “/usr/local/etc/squid/windowsupdate.txt”

Disable the cache for this site:

no_cache deny WindowsUpdate

Allow everyone to these sites with this line:

http_access allow WindowsUpdate

After doing these things do a “squid -k reconfigure” to recreate the cache.

Windows Update and Microsoft Update should be working just fine now through your cache, keeping your Windows boxes up to date.
