O Windows Vista é moderno na essência e perfeito no quesito estético. Com isso a maioria dos usuários concorda, mas nem todo mundo têm um computador poderoso o bastante para instalar o sistema operacional mais bonito da história do Windows. Como fazer então para melhorar o Windows sem atualizar para a versão mais nova? Ora, para isso servem os pacotes de transformação e é essa a função do Isso Vista Pack, um pacote de transformação que muda o visual sem graça do seu Windows XP, deixando-o com a cara do Windows Vista.

Instalação

Para instalar o Isso Vista Pack, extraia o conteúdo do arquivo ZIP e execute o programa de instalação. Não há uma instalação em português, mas não se preocupe, pois guiaremos você até a última tela de configuração. Vale lembrar que o pacote de transformação altera centenas de arquivos no seu computador. Por isso, é recomendável que você crie um ponto de restauração do sistema antes de instalar o pacote, para o caso de ocorrer algum problema.

*O próprio programa de instalação do Isso Vista Pack oferece a opção de criar um ponto de restauração. Mesmo assim, é recomendável que você mesmo crie manualmente um ponto de restauração.

Veja abaixo como instalar o Isso Vista Pack:

1. A primeira tela que você verá será a opção da língua que você deseja que a instalação seja executada. Escolha “English” e dê OK. Depois você verá uma breve descrição do que será feito no seu sistema. Clique em “Next”.

2. A seguir será mostrado o contrato de licença. Marque a caixa “I accept the terms in the License Agreement” e clique em “Next”. Na próxima tela são exibidas as notas de instalação. Clique em “Next”.

3. Agora marque a opção “Normal Installation” e clique em “Next”.

4. Marque a opção “Quick Installation” e clique em “Next”. Essa opção instala todos os principais componentes do pacote, sem perguntar. Se você escolher a opção “Custom Installation”, poderá escolher mais detalhadamente quais serão os aplicativos e janelas afetados pela transformação. É recomendável utilizar a primeira opção, que é mais rápida e mais fácil.

5. Na tela seguinte, selecione todas as opções, conforme a imagem abaixo e clique em “Next”. É necessário marcá-las para que você possa aproveitar todos os recursos do pacote.

6. Falta pouco para você ter seu Windows XP semelhante ao Vista. Na última tela da instalação você poderá escolher mais algumas opções (veja abaixo o que cada uma faz).

Create a System Restore point: marque se quiser que seja criado um ponto de restauração.

Set Isso Reloaded to run at Every System Startup: marque para que o “Isso Reloader” seja executado toda vez que você iniciar o Windows. O Isso Reloader verifica se algum dos arquivos modificados voltou ao visual do XP e altera-os novamente para o visual do Vista. É recomendável deixar essa opção desmarcada. Caso você queira executá-lo mais tarde, ele estará disponível no grupo que será criado no Menu Iniciar.

Add to Isso Configuration Control Panel: caso você queira acessar as configurações do Isso Vista Pack através do Painel de Controle, deixe essa opção marcada.

Remember my current configuration Theme: marque essa opção para que o programa de instalação mantenha uma cópia das suas configurações de tema atuais, caso você queira voltar a elas mais tarde.

Add Isso Pack OEM Branding information in System Properties: esta opção muda algumas informações que são exibidas nas propriedades do sistema. Não há utilidade em fazer isso, então deixe-a desmarcada.

Depois de todas as opções devidamente marcadas, clique em “Transform” para que o programa de instalação comece a transformar seu sistema. Quando ele terminar, será habilitado o botão “Next”. Clique nele para finalizar. Na última tela será oferecida a opção de reiniciar imediatamente ou mais tarde. Marque a opção “Reboot now” para que o computador seja reiniciado e você possa ver as transformações já feitas. Depois clique em “Finish”.

Já na hora de fechar o Windows você verá algumas mudanças. Tenha paciência, pois o primeiro boot após a instalação demorará um pouco. Você perceberá que a modificação já foi feita, mas não totalmente. Para que tudo seja alterado você deve executar todas as aplicações que foram instaladas no pacote. Veja abaixo como acessá-las e configurá-las.

Configuração automática

Esta é a forma mais fácil e rápida de colocar o seu pacote de transformação para funcionar, sem ter que executar os programas um de cada vez. Abra o Menu Iniciar > Todos os Programas (ou “All programs”) > Isso Pack > Tools e execute o “Isso Configuration”. Você verá algumas opções na janela. Clique no texto “Configure user account” para definir tudo o que você quer que seja ativado.Todas as opções do pacote estão nessa tela. Portanto, não é necessário ativar os programas manualmente.

Ainda nessa tela há o grupo “Startup Windows”. Para que todos os programas do pacote de modificação sejam sempre executados assim que o Windows iniciar, deixe marcados todos os itens desse grupo. Quando estiver satisfeito, clique em “Apply” para aplicar as configurações.

Pronto! Seu Windows já está configurado para parecer como o Vista! Se você quiser, pode ainda configurar manualmente cada um dos programas que acompanham o pacote, para deixar todas as configurações conforme o seu gosto. Há uma variedade de formas de utilizar o Isso Vista Pack. Divirta-se modificando cada uma e vendo qual efeito elas têm sobre o visual do seu XP.

Outras ferramentas

Depois de aplicar as configurações conforme explicado acima, clique em “Back” para voltar à tela inicial do Isso Welcome Center. O item “Welcome to Isso Project” abrirá uma janela do seu navegador com o site dos desenvolvedores do Isso Vista Pack. Se você percebeu alguma anomalia no sistema após a instalação, pode utilizar o “Repair system files” para que o programa tente localizar e corrigir os erros. Caso você queira desinstalar tudo e voltar ao tema original do Windows XP, clique em “Remove Isso Pack”.

Se algum arquivo de sistema voltou à sua configuração anterior, você pode utilizar o “Isso Reloader” para que as modificações sejam feitas novamente. Nenhum estilo visual será reaplicado. Você deverá fazer isso manualmente depois de executar o Isso Reloader. Para acessá-lo clique no ícone com o nome “Isso Reloader”, ainda na pasta “Tools”, do grupo “Isso Pack”, criado no Menu Iniciar.

O programa “Rebuild Icon Cache” deve ser executado quando você perceber que os ícones do sistema não estão aparecendo como deveriam. Depois de abri-lo, aguarde alguns segundos e clique em OK.

Configurando manualmente

Para aqueles que gostam de fazer um ajuste fino em tudo o que instalam no PC, aí vai uma explicação mais detalhada de tudo que está incluído no Isso Vista Pack. Clique no Menu Iniciar, depois em “Todos os Programas” e, por fim, no grupo “Isso Pack”. Na pasta “Software”, estão todos os programas adicionais que fazem alguma alteração no visual do sistema. Lembrando que todos eles podem ser executados automaticamente, como explicado no item “Configuração automática”.

Select Skin: este pequeno aplicativo altera o ícone de todas as pastas genéricas do sistema. Pastas genéricas são todas aquelas que não tem nenhum atributo especial, como pastas de imagens ou músicas, por exemplo. Você pode escolher dentre os temas disponíveis ou clicar no botão “Browse” para definir um outro arquivo de ícone para as pastas genéricas.

True Transparency: um dos recursos visuais mais atrativos do Windows Vista é a possibilidade de utilizar janelas translúcidas. Isso não poderia faltar no pacote de transformação. Execute o True Transparency para que todas as suas janelas fiquem transparentes, de forma semelhante à do Vista. Quando você executar o True Transparency, um pequeno ícone branco com o símbolo do Windows aparecerá na bandeja do sistema. Clique com o botão direito do mouse sobre ele para abrir o menu de configurações.

Clique no primeiro item do menu (“Run at Startup”), para que suas janelas fiquem transparentes sempre que o Windows iniciar. Na opção “skin”, você pode definir diferentes estilos para as transparências. Mude-os até encontrar aquele que mais agrada. A opção “Language” altera o idioma do True Transparency.

ViOrb: ainda dentro da pasta “Software” você encontrará o programa ViOrb, que muda o tamanho do botão “Iniciar”, para que ele não fique cortado ou achatado e ultrapasse o tamanho da barra de tarefas. Clicando com o botão direito do mouse sobre o ícone do ViOrb e clicando em “Start with Windows”, você fará com que o ViOrb seja executado junto com a inicialização do Windows.

ViStart: você deve ter percebido que, quando instalou o pacote de transformação, seu Menu Iniciar teve cortadas as primeiras letras de cada item. Executar o ViStart vai resolver o problema, pois os itens são renomeados como no Vista. Além disso, o modo como os programas são mostrados fica exatamente igual ao do Vista. Você pode até digitar o nome ou parte do nome de um programa no campo “Start Search”, para localizar programas com os caracteres digitados.

Visual Task Tips: no Windows Vista, quando você passa o mouse sobre a barra de tarefas, são exibidas pequenas imagens dos aplicativos que estão em execução. O Visual Task Tips faz justamente isso. Depois de abri-lo, clique com o botão direito do mouse sobre o respectivo ícone na bandeja do sistema, depois clique em “Customize”. Na aba “Settings” da janela que se abre, você pode alterar o tamanho da pequena visualização que se abre ao passar o mouse sobre os aplicativos, o tempo que o Visual Task Tips demorará para exibi-la, e a taxa de atualização. Altere essas opções a seu gosto.

Windows Sidebar: clique nesse ícone para abrir a barra lateral do Windows Vista. Nela você pode adicionar uma infinidade de gadgets que estão disponíveis para download. É possível adicionar seus feeds RSS favoritos, relógios mundiais, previsão do tempo e muito mais.

WinFlip: uma das inovações do Windows Vista é a possibilidade de alternar entre janelas através de uma animação em 3D. Executando o WinFlip, cada vez que você acionar a função ALT + TAB, o foco da janela será trocado com uma animação em 3D. Por padrão, o WinFlip utiliza as teclas ALT + TAB para a troca em 3D, entretanto é possível alterar para as teclas WINKEY (tecla com o logotipo do Windows) + TAB. Para tanto, basta clicar no ícone do WinFlip que fica na bandeja do sistema e em “Options” no menu que se abre.

ini adalah alasan pertama kenapa saya senang menggunakan linux. maksudnya apa y? begini, biasanya bagaimana cara kita menginstall aplikasi?

Orang Windows, “download aplikasi, trus double klik dan next, next, next”

Oran Ubuntu, “buka terminal, trus ketik ‘apt-get install bla bla bla’”

dulu saya senang menggunakan apt-get milik ubuntu, tapi sekarang saya jarang menggunakannya jika akan menginstall aplikasi yang berhubungan dengan programming seperti MySQL, Ruby, Apache, PHP dan lain-lain. Saya lebih senang melakukan kompilasi sendiri dari sourcecode-nya.

lantas kenapa menggunakan linux untuk melakukan proses kompilasi? alasannya karena kebanyakan aplikasi yang saya senangi itu berbasis opensource dan dibuat menggunakan bahasa C. dan karena semua distro linux biasanya sudah terinclude modul gcc maka ini dapat mempermudah saya melakukan kompilasi sourcecode

linux dapat dikembangkan menjadi sistem yang baru

alasan ini mungkin sangat tepat. maka dari itu banyak sekali sistem baru muncul dari sistem sebelumnya. seperti ubuntu yang muncul dari debian ataupun linuxmint yang muncul dari ubuntu. ini adalah hal yang menarik buat saya. dengan mempelajari linux setidaknya nanti saya bisa membangun sistem baru dari linux atau mengembangkan sistem linux yang telah ada.

jika saya terus berkecimpung di windows mungkin saya tidak akan pernah bisa membangun sistem baru diatas windows. maka dari itu sekarang ada yang namanya linux blankon, dan bukan windows blankon

fault tolerance untuk hardware di linux lebih baik

salah satu port laptop yang saya gunakan rusak, sehingga kinerja laptop saya kurang sempurna, dan saat dilakukan instalasi windows xp dan vista ternyata selalu gagal saat mendeteksi adanya error port tersebut. dan akhirnya proses instalasi yang telah berjalan setengah itu gagal total.

namun berbeda dengan linux, saat melakukan instalasi linux, ternyata saat linux mendeteksi adanya kerusakan hardware, linux tersebut hanya memberitahu adanya kerusakan tanpa menghentikan instalasi. dan bahkan instalasinya selesai dengan baik seperti tidak ada kerusakan sedikitpun pada perangkat kerasnya.

dari sini bisa dilihat ternyata linux lebih fault tolerance dari pada windows.

Not so long ago I bought Windows 7 (Home Premium). I bought it because I wanted rid of Vista. Vista caused me so many little irritations but since I’d paid £70 or so for the OEM licence I wasn’t going to be swayed to play with Tux the penguin, not for all every day activities anyway.

So, £65 quid later and some cursing later I arrived at Windows 7. Delightfully, there amount of effort (therefore cursing) in the upgrade from Vista to 7 was fairly minimal. It wasn’t as simple as Ubuntu 8.10 > 9.04 but then I didn’t have many applications installed on Ubuntu. Of course Windows doesn’t acknowledge Linux so I can’t boot there now but it’s not exactly a problem and I guess I should put 9.10 on anyway…

So… what is it all about?

Desktop - Very much like Vista

Well the desktop is very much like Vista. The bottom toolbars have changed though, starting with the library dock:

Sure, I think Mac’s may have been able to do that for ages. But it is quite a nice feature – as you hover over different windows in the dock the main window comes up behind. This is good, but what does irritate me immensely is the new taskbar icon hiding in the bottom right.

You have to left click on the more icons menu then right click on your desired icon. It’d be loads better if it was just a pop out when hovering over the date/time area.

Another irritation is the the minimise all – thankfully still Windows+M but the icon has moved from the left hand side to the right.

The start menu is changed slightly, now the menu is better at context sensitivity and provides you with additional menu items based on the main items:

As you can just about see – the word menu shows you my most recently opened files. Similarly, most MS applications have been redeveloped to take account of this feature.

Perhaps the best feature is the concept of libraries (again I doubt this is an completely original idea – but it is well executed). One of my biggest gripes with Vista was that it was near impossible to separate Windows from my files. I don’t want to put my precious photos onto the same drive as Windows – even though I have an off site backup! With libraries it was very simple to define where things resided – in fact a library could span multiple drives which could come in really handy when I finally buy that SLR. Of course it could be improved – it’s no ‘4D data store’ like the true geek inside me wants but it’s a bloody good step in the right direction.

Overall, it is definitely an improvement. But arguably Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been.

The modern Windows key.

I’ve been using Windows since its Windows 3.1 days and I was still in grade school during that time. When I first got my hand on Windows 95 (which superseded Windows 3.1, by the way) I immediately noticed something new – the introduction of the first Windows Start menu. The Start menu has now become a staple feature every modern versions of Windows but that’s not the only thing that got introduced. Another one of the most obvious changes to Windows computing during that time was the birth of the Windows key.

My first sight of the Windows key immediately triggered my curiousity which, of course, let me to pressing it eventually popping out the Start menu on the PC’s monitor. Yet, it is worth noting that before I had the chance to use a keyboard with a Windows key, the shortcut that I knew could open the Start menu without a mouse was the Ctrl + Esc key combination. Now the Start menu is nothing but a key press away but most people still take for granted this useful little key.

Useful, I say?

Most people know the Windows key to be nothing but a special key that one can tap to invoke the Start menu. Well, it actually has a lot more under its sleeve and if you don’t know what I am talking about read on.

The Windows key may be used in combination with other keys for special functions. Below is a list of Windows key shortcuts that will work on Windows XP and above (some may even work on older versions):

• Windows + B selects the first icon in the Notification Area located at the Taskbar opposite to the Start menu button.
  
• Windows + D shows the desktop or show the hidden windows when pressed a second time.
• Windows + E can be used to open the Explorer or what most people know as My Computer (Windows XP and below) or Computer (Windows Vista and above).
• Windows + F opens a window to search your computer for files.
• Windows + Ctrl + F opens Search for Computers. This requires Active Directory Domain Services. If you don’t know what that is then you might not actually need to use this shortcut.
• Windows + F1 opens Help.
• Windows + L can be used to lock the desktop or switch users.
• Windows + M minimizes all open windows.
• Windows + Shift + M restores the windows that were minimized with Windows + M.
• Windows + R opens the Run dialog.
• Windows + U opens Utility Manager (It is known as Ease of Access Center in Windows Vista and above)
• Windows + Pause opens System Properties. The Pause key is usually located at the top right section of the keyboard.
• Windows + S is used to take screenshots using OneNote. That is, if it is installed and running.
• Windows + N is another OneNote shortcut which is used to open a new side note.
• Windows + Shift is used to open OneNote itself.

New shortcuts were introduced in Windows Vista and these are:

• Windows + G can be used to select the next Sidebar Gadget item.
• Windows + Space shows the Sidebar.
• Windows + X open Windows Mobility Center (on laptops and other portable computers only)
• Windows + Tab switches through windows using Flip 3D. This requires that the computer supports the Aero interface. An lesser alternative to flipping through windows is Alt + Tab and this can be used in all Windows versions.
• Windows + 1 to 9 starts the appropriate Quick Launch Toolbar program accordingly.
• Windows + Alt + Enter starts Windows Media Center.
• Windows + T focuses the cursor on the first button, application or window on the Taskbar.

… and a few more for Windows 7 users like me:

• Windows + Space activates Aero Peek mode which lets users view their desktop without actually minimizing Windows.
• Windows + P switches projection modes between clone, extend, single, multiple monitors, etc. This is useful only to people using multiple monitors like I do.
• Windows + Up Arrow maximizes the active window.
• Windows + Down Arrow restores the active window to the default size.
• Windows + Left Arrow or Right Arrow aligns the window to the respective side of the screen.
• Windows + + zooms into the screen at the mouse cursor position and launches the Magnifier utility if it isn’t activated.
• Windows + - zooms out if screen is magnified currently.

Such an extensive list shows the hidden talents of the Windows key!

No one actually needs to memorize all of them. Just take a note of the ones that you might use often and that should suffice in making your Windows experience much more effective and smoother.

Dopo alcune prove effettuate con il nuovo sistema operativo Microsoft, posso dire che:
- l’installazione di Windows 7 è piuttosto rapida e con nessuna interruzione, se non in fase finale, ma ciò è fisiologico;
- la compatibilità con driver di periferiche e software vari sembra più che soddisfacente;
- la “pesantezza” del sistema operativo è quasi paragonabile a quella di Windows XP, infatti testandolo su PC con configurazioni obsolete (50GB di spazio disco, 1GB di RAM, tralasciando la velocità del processore) i risultati sono più che buoni;
- apprezzabile l’eliminazione del sistema UAC (controllo accesso utente) che su Windows Vista era un vero e proprio tormento;
- piccola chicca, più simpatica che altro, il ritorno del tasto “arresta il sistema” come prima scelta anzichè la famosa “sospensione” utilizzata in Windows Vista.

Mampir ke perpus kampus dan langsung ambil beberapa majalah PCMEDIA sekaligus untuk dibaca adalah aktifitas yang biasa kulakukan dikala ada waktu kosong di kampus.

Nah pada beberapa hari yang lalu tak disangka sudah ada PCMEDIA edisi 12/09, pertama hunt DVD bonus-nya tapi ternyata sudah dipinjam, dan akhirnya kuputuskan untuk baca majalahnya dulu aja, dan seperti yang sudah kuduga di edisi Desember ini bakal ada bahasan tentang freeware terbaik sepanjang tahun seperti pada tahun sebelumnya. Langsung aja kuputuskan untuk mempostingkan bahasan ini diblog.

Dan untuk perhatiannya, versi freeware yang dicantumkan di posting blog ini adalah versi yang tercantum dalam PCMEDIA 12/09, jadi bukan berarti versi terakhir dar freeware pada saat sekarang ini. Dan di posting ini diriku juga tidak akan mencantumkan lin buat download, untuk mengantisipasi kalau ada versi2 yang baru maka kucantumkan link untuk masuk ke masing2 situs dari tiap freeware, caranya tinggal klik judul/nama dari tiap freeware saja untuk masuk ke situsnya.

Cukup mengherankan untuk kategori web browser kok malah muncul nama SRWare Iron, padahal seingatku dibahasan battle web browser di PCMedia nama itu tidak ada, Google Chrome yang pada pengujiannya unggul pada beberapa kriteria malah tidak termasuk dalam Best Freeware 2009 versi PCMedia.

Sebagian diriku sependapat, tapi sebagian diriku punya pilihan sendiri, diantaranya untuk Image Viewer diriku tetap memilih Fastone Image Viewer yang saat ini mencapai versi 3.9 karena kehandalannya, fitur melimpah dan juga berbagai keunggulan lain. Lalu untuk Multimedia Player diriku tetep mengandalkan JetAudio serta K-Lite Codec Pack Media Player Classic. Yah semua itu kan juga tergantung pilihan kita. ^_^

Nah semoga info diatas bisa bermanfaat buat temen2.

I read something very interesting in “Windows via C/C++” today: starting with Windows Vista, CreateProcess can start a program where you specify the parent process! This is something forensic investigators must be aware of when they analyse processes running on a Windows machine.

Normally the parent process of a new process is the process that created the new process (via CreateProcess). But when using STARTUPINFOEX with the right LPPROC_THREAD_ATTRIBUTE_LIST to create a process, you can arbitrarely specify the parent process, provided you have the rights (i.e. it’s your process or you have debug rights).

I developed a small tool to start a program while specifying its parent process: SelectMyParent. Here I use it to start notepad as a child of lsass.exe:

1. to make lsass.exe a parent process, you need to use SelectMyParent with admin rights and elevate its rights (Run as administrator)
2. the notepad process takes over the parent process’ account: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

I don’t know how one can detect that a process’ parent is not the process that created it, because a process has no access to its extended startup info (only to its startup info). And it is the extended startup info that contains the attribute list with the handle to the parent process.

Videon till den här låten är otroligt underhållande. Kolla in trumbreaket som kommer 0:44 i klippet, inte många rätt där inte om man kollar på vad trummisen håller på med. Men den är ändå underbart uppfriskande för den har en sån underbar discokänsla över sig. Man kan gå på tusentals 70-talsnostalgifester och ändå aldrig få uppleva den känslan som fanns när 70-talet levdes på riktigt. Alla försök att emulera det hela blir bara bleka kopior och urartar stället i rena kitschorgier.

Min Windows 7 snurrar på men jag kommer inom kort göra en ren installation för det är på tok för mycket som krånglar beroende på att jag bara gjorde en uppgradering från Vista. Men jag valde att göra en uppgradering för att se vilka program och drivrutiner som måste fixas innan jag ger mig på en ren installation. Brukar nämligen vara bra att ha sånt till hands när det är dags och i och med att jag får joxa med det nu så vet jag lite vad som väntar. Samtidigt så har jag fått lite idéer om hur jag vill organisera upp min maskin efter en ren installation.

Så om du sitter med Vista och vill uppgradera till Windows 7 så kan jag rekommendera en uppgradering först för att se vad som behöver åtgärdas, sen kör en ordentlig backup, töm maskinen och gör en ren installation och ordna till din miljö så som du vill ha den.

För övrigt kan jag meddela att den initiala sladdrigheten jag upplevde börjar ge med sig. Det var sega uppdateringar av fönster, musklick som inte tog, fönsterförflyttningar som landade fel. Gadgetar som hamnade lite överallt när jag försökte flytta dem. Tror det kan ha varit så att maskinen faktiskt jobbade rätt hårt i bakgrunden efter uppgraderingen så skrivbordsmiljön helt enkelt inte hängde med.

Kommer säkert att återkomma till mina upplevelser kring Windows 7 framöver. Det var ju faktiskt så att jag hade en blogg som handlade om mina problem med Vista när jag fick min maskin för 2 år sen. Bloggen som hette Vistaoffer var min ventil för att få ur mig all frustration över att saker och ting inte fungerade som de skulle. Men jag får tillägga att jag efter att första servicepacken kom till Vista varit mer än nöjd med hur det har fungerat. Framförallt så har det varit urstabilt och aldrig laggat när det varit igång vilket gjorde mig aningens orolig när jag upplevde sladdrigheten i Windows 7 efter uppgraderingen igår.

Test: Go to some company and tell them about a free product that outsmart theirs..they will fuss over the free software and free software culture. Now, go to some foss activist, and talk to them about some proprietary software or Microsoft. They will start harassing them.

I ask you, why? Why are we deepening the bay between free software culture and proprietary software culture? The answers lie in our minds, deep..buried, because we never want to reveal them.

Free is Free

Each one has its own significance. Take the example …you are a techno-geek who is just passed out from the college, securing excellent marks, and you look around for jobs. All you get is the slogans of free software and develop free software. Will you get paid? Yeah, only in a few cases. Most of the work is volunteer-based, so you won’t get paid for it.

There are the questions related to this main question. Proprietary software are bad? No..actually, they aren’t. I am also a foss-activist, but unlike some others, I do not criticize proprietary software. I do not have enough abilities to do so. People might say that I am a foss-activist an

d I am supporting proprietary software. I am not taking anyone’s side. I am on my way, on both sides, there are two worlds..foss and non-foss. Choose what fascinates you.

plete aspects of Windows Vista and Windows XP. Of course, I do not deny, and nor Microsoft will, that Windows Vista hadn’t gained as much popularity as Windows XP or Windows 98 did. Some FOSS activists call it the ultimate failure of Vista. I do not agree. Even if Vista hadn’t been much popular, it isn’t a failure. Now, Windows 7 is appealing product of Microsoft Corporation, but what I comment on it, is that it’s priced too high. In the meaning, too high for students, and economic classes. So, not everybody will benefit from it. Also, proprietary software includes great support and help from manufacturer. So, Its a good deal.

Free & Open Source Software, like my own group, Free & Open Source Software For Youth Foundation have its own significance. However, I am going to start my own proprietary group, so no offence Free software has no limitations on how you use them, except being free too. So, this is one advantage ..oops..two advantages over proprietary software…use them or throw them in dustbin…you can use them anyway..no matter how. Now, there is one gaping hole, because the software are free and there are very few organizations offering free software..(please note that ‘very few’ is in context of total organizations…5 every 100) ..so, there is a lack of support and patches, as well as people has low enthusiasm towards free software. But overall, it doesn’t stops me to say that FOSS are great!

Score: Proprietary 1:1 FOSS

Results: What I think, is that FOSS and Proprietary software are just two wheels of a cart. Both has their own position and dependencies and effects and reliabilities. We shouldn’t deepen the bay between them, but, We should bond them together. Proprietary software and free software should be bound together, because, both of their target is one: Get customers enough satisfaction with their products. So, Why not end this war? Only if FOSS and Proprietary software will work together, then they will be able to attract more customers, users and who knows, this theory might change the world!

Indeed, as an operational manager I always state that my personal productivity will increase with at least 15% in case the rigid use of guidelines and applications of our corporate ICT Guidelines would be loosened.

Does this sound familiar?

At the office, you’ve got a sluggish computer running aging software, and the email system routinely badgers you to delete messages after you blow through the storage limits set by your IT department. Searching your company’s internal Web site feels like being teleported back to the pre-Google era of irrelevant search results.

At home, though, you zip into the 21st century. You’ve got a slick, late-model computer and an email account with seemingly inexhaustible storage space. And while Web search engines don’t always figure out exactly what you’re looking for, they’re practically clairvoyant compared with your company intranet.

This is the double life many people lead: yesterday’s technology for work, today’s technology for everything else. The past decade has brought awesome innovations to the marketplace—Internet search, the iPhone, Twitter and so on—but consumers, not companies, embrace them first and with the most gusto.

Even more galling, especially to tech-savvy workers, is the nanny-state attitude of employers who block access to Web sites, lock down PCs so users can’t install software and force employees to use clunky programs. Sure, IT departments had legitimate concerns in the past. Employees would blindly open emails from persons unknown or visit shady Web sites, bringing in malicious software that could crash the network. Then there were cost issues: It was a lot cheaper to get one-size-fits-all packages of middling hardware and software than to let people choose what they wanted.

But those arguments are getting weaker all the time. Companies now have an array of technologies at their disposal to give employees greater freedom without breaking the bank or laying out a welcome mat for hackers. “Virtual machine” software, for example, lets companies install a package of essential work software on a computer and wall it off from the rest of the system. So, employees can install personal programs on the machine with minimal interference with the work software.

Some forward-thinking companies are already giving employees more freedom to pick mobile phones, computers and applications for work—in some cases, they’re even giving workers allowances to spend on outfitting themselves. The result, they’ve found, is more-productive employees. There’s a reason professional chefs bring their own knives to work, rather than using a dull set of blades lying around the kitchen.

What Century Is This, Anyway?

For a look at how sharp the divide between work and home can be, consider my experience. The Wall Street Journal gives me a laptop with Windows XP, an operating system I found satisfying when it came out eight years ago but that lacks a lot of modern touches, like a speedy file-search function. My home computer, meanwhile, is a two-year-old iMac running the Leopard version of Apple’s Macintosh operating system. Among other virtues, it’s got a search function called Spotlight that lets me track down files in a flash.

Or take email. Please. There’s a limit on how much email employees can store on the company’s system, and I routinely bump into it. So, I need to spend time hunting through old notes in Microsoft Outlook and deciding what to keep and what to delete, or risk a shutdown of my account. I’m not the only one; a colleague told me she often receives messages with large attached files that overload her inbox while she’s asleep. That means she can’t receive any more mail until she gets into the office in the morning and cleans out her messages.

Limits like those are tough to swallow when you consider how generous free email services are. In nearly five years, for instance, I’ve used only about a quarter of the storage space in my personal Gmail account from Google Inc., despite almost never deleting messages. Furthermore, I can search for old Gmail messages almost instantaneously, while the search function in the email I use for work is painfully slow.

When they get fed up with work technologies, employees often become digital rogues, finding sneaky ways to use better tools that aren’t sanctioned by the IT department. In my case, I’ve installed a search engine called Google Desktop that lets me quickly scour my hard drive for files, and a product by Xobni Corp. that does something similar for Outlook email, even though neither is approved by my IT department. And those programs have made a world of difference. In a simple test, it took Outlook two minutes to track down an email from a few months ago, based on a few search terms. Xobni found the message before I finished typing the words.

The Journal declined to comment on its policies. But even with the potential for productivity gains from newer technologies, it’s tough for many enterprises to stomach the prohibitive costs of a companywide upgrade to the latest software and hardware, especially during the current economic downturn. Research firm Gartner Inc. estimates enterprises will cut technology purchases by 6.9% this year, which would be the biggest decline on record.

Furthermore, there are indirect costs connected with upgrades that give businesses an incentive to stick with battle-tested technologies, like the hassles of retraining workers and of dealing with buggy new products. In one example, many companies never bothered to upgrade to Microsoft’s last version of its operating system, Windows Vista, in part because of technical issues with the software when it was first released.

Home-Field Advantage

It wasn’t always this way. For years, the big breakthroughs in computing technology came in corporate IT departments and university computer labs. But that started to change as the cost of PCs plunged and they became fixtures in people’s homes. Now consumers buy more PCs than businesses do—and the consumer market spurs the most interesting innovations.

Instant messaging reached the mainstream through America Online. Amazon.com Inc. used the technology behind its shopping site to become a pioneer in “cloud computing”—where businesses rent resources in Amazon data centers rather than running hardware and software on their own. Apple Inc.’s iPhone broke new ground in Web surfing and running applications on mobile phones.

The rise of the consumer market also means people have gotten a lot smarter when it comes to technology—and a lot less patient with substandard stuff at the office. Even with the weak economy, companies will find it harder to recruit savvy workers if they don’t let them use their favored technology.

Some companies have decided the best solution is to start giving workers what they want. Until a couple of years ago, Kraft Foods Inc., the consumer-goods giant, had a rigid approach to workplace technology that was typical of many big companies: It locked down PCs so employees couldn’t install software on their own, and it prevented them from accessing sites like YouTube and Facebook. When it came to hardware, Kraft offered a limited choice of smart phones and Windows PCs.

Executives began to worry that the company’s technology policies were preventing employees from staying in step with trends. Kraft was a consumer company, they figured, so workers needed to be more familiar with the technologies that consumers were using, whether the iPhone or YouTube.

So, the IT department stopped blocking access to consumer Web sites, and the company started a stipend program for smart phones: Workers get an allowance every 18 months to buy a phone of their choosing. (Over 60% picked iPhones.) Kraft has also started a pilot program to let some of its employees pick their own computer. One catch: Employees who choose Macs are expected to solve technical problems by consulting an online discussion group at Kraft, rather than going through the help desk, which deals mainly with Windows users.

“The win for Kraft is employees are more productive if they use devices they’re familiar with,” says David Diedrich, vice president of information-systems technology, security and workplace services at Kraft.

A Brighter Tomorrow

The prospect of giving employees choice may be too frightening for some companies to contemplate, but there are ways of doing it without completely giving up control. Employers could require workers to sign agreements promising that they’ll back up all their data and run the latest antivirus software and won’t download pornography. Employers can also require workers to run all of their corporate applications inside a virtual machine on the computer, which seals company information off from everything else.

Still, financial-services companies, law firms and others may feel the need to maintain stricter control, for regulatory and legal reasons. Even some companies moving toward letting employees choose their own computers, like consumer-goods maker Unilever PLC, say the policy won’t work for every employee inside a business. One reason: Many companies offering free choice ask workers to troubleshoot technical problems on their own, and some people simply aren’t up to the task.

That said, many executives agree that change is in the air. Chris Turner, Unilever’s chief technology officer, says the pressure to relax IT policies is bubbling up, especially from young employees. “They look at your standard corporate desktop and say, ‘I can’t work with that,’ ” Mr. Turner says. “If you can make it an attractive thing that they want to work with, that’s a hugely powerful thing.”

Comenta el blog Genbeta, el “mal rato” que pasó Steve Ballmer en la reunión anual de accionistas de Microsoft, por las preguntas que le hicieron determinados accionistas.

Estas preguntas estaban centradas en la necesidad de mejorar en marketing para intentar relanzar la imagen de la compañía.

Creo que para todos es evidente que Microsoft tiene un grave problema de imagen, ya que se le ha asociado la imagen de enemigo del software libre, de elaborar productos más orientados a los resultados de la compañía que a los usuarios, de haber perdido capacidad innovadora (los dos factores anteriores, da un imagen como una empresa que desarrolla productos de una generación anterior), de ser un látigo para la competencia, etc…

A todo lo anterior hay que sumarle otros aspectos como el mal sabor de boca que han dejado algunos productos suyos como es el caso de Windows Vista o Zune.

En lo que respecta al problema de imagen Microsoft no ha sido víctima de nada, sino que esta misma empresa no ha enfocado nada bien sus campañas de marketing, ya que se han olvidado de que tienen competencia (este es el problema de quien está dominando de manera clara un determinado sector, como el de los sistemas operativos, desde hace muchos años). De esto, como he comentado en diferentes artículos se han aprovechado todos sus competidores. Un ejemplo de todo esto lo tenemos con la imagen de enemigo del software libre de Microsoft, tras la cual se han parapetado todas las actuaciones que han realizado gigantes como Apple, Google, Oracle, etc…, que aunque participen o subvencionen algunos proyectos de software libre, sus productos estrella y la línea principal de sus negocios se basan en software propietario puro y duro, que además lo seguirán siendo, salvo sorpresa, por muchos años.

El marketing es fundamental siempre y más en un entorno tan competitivo como en el que se mueve Microsoft. Apple ha sabido manejar muy bien los tiempos del marketing (de hecho tener algo que sea de Apple, se ha asociado a tener algo guay) y lo ha acompañado con productos sensacionales e innovadores, lo cual ha tenido un impacto muy importante en el mercado y, en consecuencia, en el balance de la compañía.

Microsoft debe reaccionar y no sólo en marketing, el entorno ha cambiado y ahora tiene competencia real y fuerte en todos los sectores, hasta incluso en el de los sistemas operativos, con productos de gran calidad y tremendamente innovadores. Si Microsoft no reacciona lo puede pasar muy mal, ya que lo más lógico es que dada la competencia que tiene, por ejemplo, en los sistemas operativos (Mac OS, Linux, próximamente Chrome OS), lo normal es que pierdan cuota de mercado, ya que hay más donde elegir y esa pérdida de cuota de mercado tendrá resultados directos sobre los balances de la compañía.

Yo espero que Microsoft reaccione, ya que necesitamos a esa empresa, necesitamos que exista una competencia viva en el sector, que proporcione innovación y cada vez mejores productos.

Por lo visto la Agencia de Seguridad de los Estados Unidos trabajó con Microsoft en el desarrollo de la seguridad de Windows 7. Eso ha provocado temores de que el sistema tenga instaladas puertas traseras por parte de la NSA. Microsoft ha tenido que salir al paso de los comentarios al respecto para aclarar que la Agencia solamente había colaborado en el desarrollo de la guía de seguridad del sistema. La información proviene de una intervención en la comisión de seguridad y terrorismo del Senado.

En una reunión rutinaria de la comisión de seguridad y terrorismo del Senado de los Estados Unidos, el director de seguridad de la información de la NSA, la agencia de seguridad estadounidense, aseguró que la agencia había colaborado con Microsoft en el desarrollo de Windows 7. Durante su declaración el representante de la agencia afirmó que conjuntamente con el Departamento de Defensa se trabajó para mejorar la guía de seguridad de Windows 7.

Algunos analistas han mostrado su preocupación por la aparentemente desinteresada colaboración de la NSA, que podría haber instalado en el sistema una “puerta trasera” para que las autoridades pudieran entrar en los ordenadores que tengan instalado Windows 7. Microsoft ha salido inmediatamente la paso de estas afirmaciones negando cualquier posibilidad de que la NSA hubiese implementado sistemas para acceder a las comunicaciones o los datos de los usuarios.

Microsoft ha detallado en qué había consistido la colaboración. El trabajo conjunto se ha centrado exclusivamente, por lo visto, en la herramienta de Cumplimiento de directivas de seguridad de Windows 7. Una solución que permite el control de seguridad de ordenadores con Windows 7 además de las unidades de almacenamiento encriptadas por BitLocker. La NSA no ha intervenido ni tiene datos del desarrollo del núcleo ni de librerías de funcionamiento interno de Windows 7.

Por lo visto no es la primera vez que la NSA colabora con Micro$oft para el desarrollo de sus sistemas operativos, ya que lo había hecho anteriormente tanto con Windows Vista como con XP.

En fin un motivo más para quedarse con XP o pasarse a Linux.

Well it’s day one of my new contract, and I have been presented with a Dell Inspiron 1750. This is used, not as an example of the amazing technology I get to have experience with, but one of exactly how much of a challenge I believe I will soon be facing. The laptop is reflective of the current procurement procedures and management, and hence, exactly why I have been bought in to advise the IT Services department on their decisions, management, and operational procedures.

Let’s start with a quick overview of the laptop, before we get into the business trivialities it presents. It is the first laptop with a 17” screen that I have ever spent any real time with, and as predicted, it is far too big. It’s perfect for home use and if you never plan to take it anywhere further than to the other side of your desk. For corporate use, the benefit of the extra screen size is far outweighed by increased size, weight, and decreased battery life and portability. I can see this machine either staying at my desk in London, or at home. I plan to continue traveling with either my 15” MacBook Pro, or even my smaller 12.1” Sony Vaio.

Now down to the heart of the matter. The Inspiron is a strange choice to have made for a large scale corporate network, regardless of how big the screen is. Dell does a fantastic line in business machines (with the less aesthetically pleasing, but fantastic to use Precision and Latitude range). This would be where my money would have gone if buying a Dell laptop for a business environment. The strange purchasing decisions evidently did not stop here either, with the lower end of the range being bought (coming pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Edition). Not only did whoever put the order in, pay extra to have Windows Vista installed, rather than Windows 7, but having the Home Edition of an operating system will all but stop the laptop interacting with the company network correctly. The first thing I did was make my life easier, by installing my copy of Windows 7, and joining the company domain.

The exact thinking that must have gone into this purchase mystified and intrigued me, so I did a little bit of investigation. The results of my investigations were not quite what I was expecting them to be. The company is currently running with a Windows Server 2003 based infrastructure. I knew this part already, as one of the things I am here to oversee and project manage is the transition to a Windows Server 2008 based system.  However, some of the IT Management have been arguing that because 2003 cannot properly support Windows 7 as a member of a domain (which it can; but that’s another matter), there was no point in bringing any of the new mobile equipment onto the network. For a start, even if this was to be correct, why pay extra for an antiquated operating system? And secondly, a network incapable of properly supporting Windows 7, will usually be in a similar state for Vista as well.

I can see that the next 18 months is going to be a very interesting and time consuming experience. I’m sure that I am going to deeply upset a few people very quickly indeed – things need sorting, and soon.
