Most of my customers still think Nero and Roxio are the only people that make burning software. Most of you know better – there are tons of good, free burning applications for Windows. Here’s a quick list of five that I enjoy using. If your favorite isn’t mentioned, share it with us in the comments!

ImgBurn (pictured above)
Since most of my recording tasks involve ISO files or burning entire folders as a backup, ImgBurn has become my app of choice. It’s small and easy to use, and I’ve yet to produce a coaster with it. It’s also a great tool for creating ISO files – either from a disc or files and folders on your PC.

ImgBurn also gets bonus points for the random comments that appear in status bar.

CDBurner XP
If you prefer a more Nero-style experience but can do without all the bloat, CDBurner Xp is a great option. Apart from burning pretty much any kind of project, you can also use CDB to create covers and burn Lightscribe artwork to your discs. It also now supports Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats. It’s very easy to use even for non-technical types (read: I install this on my friends’ and parents’ systems).

InfraRecorder
InfraRecorder has been part of the Portable Apps suite for a long time, and with good reason. It’s an excellent burning application that can handle just about any type of project. It is, of course, totally portable so it’s a perfect tool to cart around on your flash drive.

Running 64-bit Windows? There are also native x64 versions of both the installer and portable versions of Infrarecorder.

NCH ExpressBurn
ExpressBurn packs a lot of functionality into a sub-400Kb download. In addition to creating data and audio discs and ISO files, it can also copy discs and burn video DVD and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD data discs. Volume normalization is supported on audio CDs.

Burn CDCC
If you just want a tool to burn ISO files, this is as simple as it gets. Burn CDCC is portable and supports CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray image files. It’s totally portable and only takes up 150Kb of disk space. Browse for your ISO, choose the burner you want to use, and press start. That’s all there is to it.

Continuing on my newly founded hobby, making Windows XP x64 behave, here’s another Gem… If you’ve ever had Visual Studio 2008 crash when doing a search or search and replace command, this is probably for you:

1. Go to Microsoft’s Hotfix Request Web Form
2. In: “Product and version affected:”, type in: 947841
3. Fill out the rest of the form
4. Wait for e-mail to arrive in a few hours
5. Install HotFix
6. Curse Microsoft

Since Windows XP X64 is the abandoned, left for dead son on Microsoft, it’s actually a very nice and pleasant product to work with.
This of course has to do with the fact that the kernel and most of the OS shared the features/service packs and the general respect that Microsoft gives to it’s server line of products.
In other words, what I’m trying to say, is that generally speaking Microsoft’s behavior very much reminds that of Sauron of LOTR, while it’s eye is fixed on the Vista / Desktop users, and actively Harming them and trying to amputate them, Windows XP X64 users are left, just like Frodo, to calmly walk the land of Mordor undisturbed.

Unfortunately, this is where the metaphor ends, since many other software companies, seem not to respect the legitimacy of Windows XP X64’s users to peacefully exist… What’s more interesting is that in some cases it’s even Microsoft that seem to no support it’s own dog food:

Now, while in the particular case I’ve just mentioned, there is a well documented fix (and in all fairness it appears to be more of a braindamage somewhere deep in redmondian since the actual MSI files install without a hiccup), this does not seem to be the case with iTunes.

Even though iTunes supports Windows Vista X64, it does not seem to show love for Windows XP X64:

The reason I write about this is because I’ve found a FIX!, From what I can tell, this seems to work perfectly fine, but keep in mind… YMMV.
From my personal experience, iTunes will complain about not being able to burn CDs (Who cares?), but everything else works well.. including iPhone support…

In case you are experiencing some iPhone related problems after the install, scroll down to the Troubleshooting section for a possible fix.

So… How?:

Installing iTunes

1. Download the 64 bit iTunes installer, the links are not always easy to find, but google comes in handy: Generally speaking try looking for: iTunes [Version #] iTunes64Setup
   In my case it was: iTunes 7.6.2 iTunes64Setup, which was found here
2. Use some extraction tool to open up the iTunes64Setup.exe into a folder, in my case I used ever so useful 7-zip, and named the folder iTunes64Setup-x64patch, since I plan to zip it up for later use… This should look like this:
   
   Now, we shouldn’t care for the iTunesSetupAdmin.exe file, we only care about the MSI files. All of the MSI files are compatible with XP X64 to begin with, EXCEPT for iTunes.msi, which is kind of important… so now we need to make it work with XP X64…
3. Download Microsoft’s Orca MSI editor, you can either google it, or download the entire Windows SDK (1.4 GB and counting…), install Orca
4. Edit the iTunes.msi file with Orca (You can do this by right-clicking the .msi file and choosing "Edit with Orca"
5. Navigate to "LaunchCondition" section, choose the Conditions that spells: "VersionNT64>=600", and change it to "VersionNT64>=501"

6. Choose to save the file, exit Orca, then double-click iTunes.msi and complete the install…

Troubleshooting iTunes <-> iPhone Link/Sync

It has come to my attention that some people are experiencing some issues with having the iPhone accessible after the installtion of iTunes is finished.
I’ve found the following procedure, as described in the comment by hip63 can provide the much desired fix.
Just to be on the safe side: DO NOT DO THIS IF YOUR ITUNES/IPHONE LINK IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY.

1. Plug your iPhone into the computer
2. Go to the device manager, in any way you know how to, for those of you who need more directed help:
   Open System Properties (in the Control Panel, or right-click “My Computer” and select “Properties”), then go to the Hardware tab and click the “Device Manager” button
3. You should be able to find a “Imaging Devices” section with an appropriate “Apple iPhone” entry
4. Right click the “Apple iPhone “ Entry and select “Update Driver…”
5. When the Hardware Update Wizard opens up, it may ask if you want to connect to Windows Update. select “No, not this time” and hit Next.
   
6. On the next screen, select “Install for a list or specific location” and click Next.
   
7. On the next screen, select “Don’t search…” and hit Next.
   
8. The next screen should show you two entries, “Digital Still Camera” and “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver”. (or similar) Select “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver” and click Next.
   
9. After a while you will be presented with that same “this driver might make your face melt off” warning screen from earlier. Click “Continue Anyway”.

Plug the iPhone out, and back in, restart your computer (might not be necessary, but what the heck) and everything should be back online.

Santa Clara (USA) – Adobe si prepara a traghettare alcuni dei suoi più famosi software nell’era delle piattaforme di calcolo a 64 bit. Una transizione che inizierà con l’imminente Lightroom 2.0, di cui negli scorsi giorni è stata rilasciata una prima beta, e passerà attraverso il futuro Photoshop CS4 per Windows. La prossima versione di Photoshop per Mac OS X resterà invece a 32 bit.
A fare un po’ di luce sulla roadmap di Adobe verso i 64 bit è John Nack, product manager per Photoshop, che sul proprio blog spiega che CS4 a 64 bit supporterà ufficialmente soltanto Windows Vista, sebbene dovrebbe girare – eventualmente con qualche problema minore – anche su Windows XP x64. Per godere dei 64 bit gli utenti di Mac OS X dovranno invece attendere Photoshop CS5.

Il manager di Adobe ha giustificato questa apparente discriminazione con la necessità, per il proprio team di sviluppo, di migrare Photoshop per Mac dalle attuali interfacce di programmazione Carbon a quelle Cocoa. Necessità resa inevitabile, dice Nack, dalla decisione di Apple di abbandonare lo sviluppo di una versione a 64 bit di Carbon per focalizzarsi unicamente sulle API Cocoa, con cui è possibile creare applicazioni a 32 e a 64 bit.

“Alla Worldwide Developers Conference dello scorso giugno Adobe e altri sviluppatori hanno appreso che Apple ha deciso di cessare il progetto Carbon 64″, si legge nel post di Nack. “Questo significa che le applicazioni Mac a 64 bit necessitano di essere riscritte per l’uso di Cocoa al posto di Carbon (che è esattamente ciò che è stato fatto con Lightroom). Ma questo sginifica anche che dovremo riscrivere ampie porzioni di Photoshop e dei suoi plug-in, un’operazione che interessa potenzialmente oltre un milione di linee di codice”.Questo porting non coinvolgerà dunque soltanto gli sviluppatori di Photoshop, ma anche quelli di plug-in: le versioni a 32 bit di questi ultimi, infatti, non potranno funzionare con Photoshop a 64 bit.

“Nessuno ha mai migrato un’applicazione della

dimensione di Photoshop da Carbon a Cocoa”, ha dichiarato Nach, che ha ricordato come persino Apple non abbia ancora rilasciato una versione Cocoa-based del suo famoso software per l’editing video Final Cut Pro.Se una versione a 64 bit di Photoshop per Mac appare dunque ancora distante, i fotografi evoluti che utilizzano la piattaforma della Mela possono spremere i propri sistemi a 64 bit con Lightroom 2.0 Beta, disponibile sia per Mac OS X 10.5.x che per Windows Vista x64. Apple Aperture, sono descritte in questo post.Ma quali benefici concreti porta l’indirizzamento della memoria a 64 bit? Oltre a quello più noto, ossia la possibilità di utilizzare più di 4 GB di memoria RAM, i vantaggi non sono poi così vistosi. Nack ha spiegato che, con quantitativi di memoria standard (2-4 GB), l’incremento di velocità fornito dalla versione a 64 bit di Photoshop è tipicamente compresa fra l’8 e il 12 per cento.

Per notare davvero la differenza occorrono workstation ben equipaggiate e file grafici di grandi dimensioni: su un sistema quad-core con 32 GB di RAM, ad esempio, Photoshop x64 ha aperto un’immagine da 3,75 gigapixel 10 volte più velocemente della controparte a 32 bit. Il merito va attribuito alla capacità dell’applicazione di sfruttare tutta la memoria RAM a disposizione, minimizzando così l’uso della lenta memoria virtuale (che utilizza l’hard disk).

“Il computing a 64 bit è una parte importante della storia futura di Photoshop e Lightroom, ma non è una panacea, e non abbiamo intenzione di rivenderla come tale”, commenta Nack. “Siamo contentissimi di offrire già ora una versione nativa a 64 bit di Lightroom sia per Mac che per Windows, e di fornire una versione a 64 bit di Photoshop per Windows come parte della prossima release. E per quanto riguarda Mac x64, continueremo a lavorare strettamente con Apple (come abbiamo fin qui fatto) per rendere questa transizione il più veloce ed efficiente possibile”.

Sono trascorsi cinque anni dall’introduzione sul mercato delle prime CPU x86 a 64 bit, ma come si è più volte detto in queste pagine, il supporto del software a questa tecnologia è ancora lacunoso, soprattutto quando si parla di applicazioni e driver di periferica utilizzati in ambito consumer e dei piccoli uffici. Persino colossi come Microsoft si trovano ancora nel bel mezzo di questa migrazione: ad oggi BigM ha dato la precedenza ai suoi prodotti aziendali di punta, come Exchange Server, Windows Compute Cluster Server e Hyper-V.

Lo scorso anno un dirigente di Microsoft

ha pronosticato che Windows Server 2008 sarà il primo sistema operativo del big di Redmond le cui versioni a 64 bit supereranno, per diffusione, quelle a 32 bit. Una previsione però considerata da più parti troppo ottimistica, persino per un sistema operativo x86 espressamente dedicato alle aziende.
