Nah pada beberapa hari yang lalu tak disangka sudah ada PCMEDIA edisi 12/09, pertama hunt DVD bonus-nya tapi ternyata sudah dipinjam, dan akhirnya kuputuskan untuk baca majalahnya dulu aja, dan seperti yang sudah kuduga di edisi Desember ini bakal ada bahasan tentang freeware terbaik sepanjang tahun seperti pada tahun sebelumnya. Langsung aja kuputuskan untuk mempostingkan bahasan ini diblog.

Dan untuk perhatiannya, versi freeware yang dicantumkan di posting blog ini adalah versi yang tercantum dalam PCMEDIA 12/09, jadi bukan berarti versi terakhir dar freeware pada saat sekarang ini. Dan di posting ini diriku juga tidak akan mencantumkan lin buat download, untuk mengantisipasi kalau ada versi2 yang baru maka kucantumkan link untuk masuk ke masing2 situs dari tiap freeware, caranya tinggal klik judul/nama dari tiap freeware saja untuk masuk ke situsnya.

Cukup mengherankan untuk kategori web browser kok malah muncul nama SRWare Iron, padahal seingatku dibahasan battle web browser di PCMedia nama itu tidak ada, Google Chrome yang pada pengujiannya unggul pada beberapa kriteria malah tidak termasuk dalam Best Freeware 2009 versi PCMedia.

Sebagian diriku sependapat, tapi sebagian diriku punya pilihan sendiri, diantaranya untuk Image Viewer diriku tetap memilih Fastone Image Viewer yang saat ini mencapai versi 3.9 karena kehandalannya, fitur melimpah dan juga berbagai keunggulan lain. Lalu untuk Multimedia Player diriku tetep mengandalkan JetAudio serta K-Lite Codec Pack Media Player Classic. Yah semua itu kan juga tergantung pilihan kita. ^_^

However, I am going to start my own proprietary group, so no offence Free software has no limitations on how you use them, except being free too. So, this is one advantage ..oops..two advantages over proprietary software…use them or throw them in dustbin…you can use them anyway..no matter how. Now, there is one gaping hole, because the software are free and there are very few organizations offering free software..(please note that ‘very few’ is in context of total organizations…5 every 100) ..so, there is a lack of support and patches, as well as people has low enthusiasm towards free software. But overall, it doesn’t stops me to say that FOSS are great!

Score: Proprietary 1:1 FOSS

Results: What I think, is that FOSS and Proprietary software are just two wheels of a cart. Both has their own position and dependencies and effects and reliabilities. We shouldn’t deepen the bay between them, but, We should bond them together. Proprietary software and free software should be bound together, because, both of their target is one: Get customers enough satisfaction with their products. So, Why not end this war? Only if FOSS and Proprietary software will work together, then they will be able to attract more customers, users and who knows, this theory might change the world!

This is my new PC (codename: GenTower) and it has one purpose in life, to be my genealogy PC. As you can see it is not really new, that is rather given away by the presence of a 3½” floppy drive on the front.

Interestingly I have never bought a new PC in my entire life, only a new netbook. All my other PCs have either been second-hand or upgraded from existing PCs. I just can’t bear to throw away a PC that is still working, without at least pulling parts out of it for re-use.

The truth is that most of what I will use it for is not going to be that demanding, it doesn’t need an expensive graphics card or a water-cooled processor for viewing census images. What I do need is more memory and a newer operating system than my current PC provides.

It already has more memory than my current PC, but importantly it has the capacity for more, so I will probably add the maximum I can over the next few months, dependant on the price of course.

The hard drive is a reasonable 80GB, which doesn’t sound a lot these days, but knowing that my family history files all still fit on a 4GB memory stick makes me think that 80GB will probably be sufficient for the time being, unless I happen to come across a large hoard of family photos that need scanning.

It has a DVD player, but I will probably swap that with the DVD writer from my current PC. I can’t actually see much use for the 3½” floppy drive, although I do still have some old DOS games on 3½” disks, but I expect they are probably unreadable now anyway.

For some strange reason I am overcome by the desire to have a 5¼” floppy drive in the machine as well. I don’t really know why, I can’t imagine that I would ever use, but I think it would be really cool just to have it sitting there alongside the DVD writer.

The operating system on the GenTower is Windows XP Pro, which is a step up from the Windows 2000 that I have on my current PC. I know I am still a couple of operating systems behind, but XP should be good enough to keep me going for another couple of years at least, and at least now I will have a PC that will be capable of handling a newer operating system.

Most of the software I need will be removed from my old PC and re-installed on the new one. Having Windows XP will give me a greater choice of software to use, because so much new software doesn’t support Windows 2000 and several online services don’t support Windows 2000 either, like Dropbox.

Before I can start using it there is much to be done, in it’s previous life the GenTower was a business machine and today, after having a good look around it’s hard drive, I decided that best option was to do a complete restore, back to it’s original factory settings.

That has cleared out a lot of rubbish, but it has also cluttered it up with a few bits of unwanted and out-dated software (like Norton Anti-Virus 2004), so my next task is to remove all that, get some fresh virus and firewall protection on it and then plug it in to the internet.

Then I will point it to the Microsoft Update website and let it spend several hours updating everything in sight. Only then will it be ready for me to plug in all my other devices and start cluttering up the hard drive with my family history.

A couple things have happened recently which has made updating my blog increasingly difficult. Behold, the saga of Acacia’s Technological Meltdown.
First, my beloved computer, which I’ve had for over two and a half years, with over 22,000 photographs on its hard disk – died a sudden death in the form of a shattered screen. Yes, I will be able to eventually recover my files, but until Christmas break, I am still a full-time college student without a working laptop. By “working” I do not suggest that I have no computer at all, however: the immense generosity of Adrienne Blaine has bestowed me with a brand new Dell somethingrather, a gigantic beast of a machine functioning in the nostalgic ways of Windows XP. Not only does it weigh what feels like 20 pounds, it refuses to connect to the internet – anywhere- and freezes up in fits of hysteria if I so much as attempt to compose a word document. Oh, Windows. How you nauseate me in your startling incompetence.
This said, I find myself entirely dependent upon the computers in the school computer lab (also ancient Windows machines that can’t accomplish anything with an ounce of efficiency), which is a 20-minute uphill walk from my apartment. The school, for that matter, holds the computer lab open at irregular and inconvenient hours, and when it is open, fails to use any form of ventilation. The school computer lab is therefore reduced to a stuffy, windowless box reeking of sweat and overheated, outdated technology. How I am expected to produce anything worth reading in that environment, I’ll never know.
I am lost at what course of action to take. Should I revive my weary MacBook with an expensive repair, and thus reunite with Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and iStopMotion, even though the lifespan of my computer is potentially rather short thereafter, or should I part with my beloved software in favor of a new laptop that will probably last a lot longer? I’m torn. I feel slightly incomplete without my entire iPhoto library a click away.

Reformatting your Windows XP computer will erase everything on your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. To avoid losing your data (documents, pictures, music, etc.), you will want to backup your information prior to reformatting. See the ITS Help Desk Personal Data Backup Support Center for more information. After you have reformatted your computer, you will need to reinstall all of your personal data, as well as any software products you may use (for example, Microsoft Office, iTunes, Symantec AntiVirus, etc.).

Reformatting your Windows XP computer has three main parts:

• Reformatting the computer from your operating system CD.
• Reinstalling the drivers that came with your computer.
• Running Windows Update to reinstall all security updates and patches.

Please contact the ITS Help Desk (384-4357) prior to reformatting your computer if you have questions about any of these processes involved.

NOTE: If you have a network connection, please unplug from the network before starting installation.

First, make sure that your computer is set to Boot to CD.  This is a different procedure depending on your computer.  When your computer first boots look for an option to enter the BIOS settings.  Under the BIOS settings find the “Boot Order” and make sure the CD-ROM is set to boot first.  If you have any problems with this please contact the ITS Help Desk at 319-384-HELP.

2. With the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive, save your BIOS settings and exit.

3. If you’ve done everything correctly you should be asked to “Press Any Key to Boot from CD”.

4. After installing the necessary setup files, Windows XP will display your partitions.  Delete any existing partitions by selecting the desired partition with the arrow keys, press D to delete and then L to confirm the deletion.

5. You should now have only one option, “Unpartitioned Space”.  Press Enter to install Windows XP to the unpartitioned space.

6. When asked how you would like to format the partition, select “Format using the NTFS file system”.

7. After the partition is formatted, Windows XP will begin installation.  The computer will reboot.  While the computer is rebooting, please do not touch any keys.  From now on the screens will look like the following:

Enter your product key.  If you purchased Windows XP from the IMU Bookstore, the product key will be located on the back of the sleeve your CD came in.  If you are reformatting using a Windows XP CD that came with your computer, the product key may be located on a sticker somewhere on your computer case.

9. When asked for Network Settings, choose “Typical Settings”.

Windows XP will now complete installation.  Upon completion you will need to re-install the drivers for your hardware (Modem, Sound, Video, etc).  Many PC companies such as Dell, Gateway, and HP will include a “Driver Installation CD” with the computer.  Simply insert the CD and follow the instructions.  Otherwise, you can download current drivers from many manufacturer’s support web sites. If you are thinking of buying a computer then you need to know every thing about it including its accessories. It has been seen that people know only a few details about computers. They are content by knowing only about its hardware, software and processing details, and never give a thought about the accessories that are needed or used along with the computer. The following paragraphs summarize the work of computer accessories experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of computer accessories. If you follow their advice you can avoid any confusion in buying computer accessories surprises.

Yesterday, we spent about three hours trying to convince a client of ours that brand new computers just don’t come equipped with the all things that most computers need in a PC. We tried to convince him that a fully functional computer is one that is personalized with specially selected hardware and software accessories – and that the computer purchased at the store doesn’t come with these things. Unfortunately, all of our convincing was to our avail. Our client insisted that he should never need more than what came with his boxed product and that we were just trying “bilk” more money out of him.

As computer consultants, it’s our job and mission to make sure our clients are 100% satisfied when they walk out our offices. But our job is unnecessarily made harder when people don’t take the time to learn about computer accessories and familiarize themselves with the limitations of store-bought computers. Hopefully by the time you finish reading this article, you’ll understand the lesson that we were trying to teach our client: “What comes out of the box is really just a starter kit.”

I trust that what you’ve read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain.

The typical computer package comes with a CPU unit, keyboard, mouse, and speaker set. That may be just fine for some, but most people require more than that especially in today’s “connected” society. Today’s users require full multimedia capabilities, a wide range of graphics tools, and accommodations for the various portables we now enjoy. These extras aren’t included with “what comes out of the box,” and the only way to get them is to accessorize.

To illustrate the importance of accessorizing, we like to use the “plain dough” analogy. Let’s say that a brand new computer is a batch of plain dough – waiting to be flavored and baked into something useful. If we want to use this dough to make a delicious batch of chocolate chip cookies, we would need to “accessorize” this dough with chocolate chips and a little brown sugar. If we want to use this dough into in a warm loaf of sesame seed bread on the other hand, we’d need to “accessorize” the dough with yeast and sesame seeds.

Like “plain dough,” the brand new computer isn’t very useful by itself. It needs accessorizing.

Aproximadamente son $ 30.00 dólares americanos, eso parece de risa, y los mas irónico es que es solo para estudiantes, yo me pregunto…¿que diferencia hay entre los estudiantes y los usuarios comunes y corrientes?. Y al mismo tiempo están creando una campaña a nivel nacional sobre la discriminación, distinción, exclusión, etc.

Security experts raised privacy concerns after a US National Security Agency official revealed that the Agency collaborated with Microsoft during the development stage of Windows 7. The revelation was made in a prepared statement by NSA information assurance director Richard Schaeffer, before the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security, which operates under the Judiciary panel.

Speaking during a hearing on cybersecurity on November 17, Schaeffer acknowledged that the NSA drew on its “unique expertise and operational knowledge of system threats and vulnerabilities to enhance Microsoft’s operating system security guide”. Schaeffer ‘s prepared statement is available on video here (forward to 32^nd minute).

Commenting on Schaeffer’s revelation, security experts and watchdog groups expressed privacy concerns, citing the Agency’s controversial domestic intelligence operations in recent years.

Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), said “the obvious concern is [that the NSA has built] in back doors that enable tracking users and intercepting user communications”. This is the third time in recent years that the NSA is found to have collaborated with Microsoft in developing operating systems. The secretive Agency worked with the US-owned vendor on Windows 9X, Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Vista.
