Windows Vista, Server 2008 SP2 Release Candidate officiellement le statut à venir Q2 2009,en attendent de Bien que ne tient pas longtemps a sortire. La semaine dernière, jai entendu parler de la Release Candidate (RC), qui s’appuie de Windows Vista et Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 et qui font le tour, et je me suis rendu sur le blog officiel de Windows, a confirmé la mise à jour devrait bientôt être disponible pour les abonnés MSDN et TechNet, avec une public test à suivre, parfois, avant sa version finale. Et quand pourrait-il être? Parfois, au deuxième trimestre de cette année, apparemment, ce qui cadre bien avec certains, nous mécontentement pris vent du mois dernier.

So I went ahead and installed the public Windows 7 beta (x64)…

Nice easy install with minimal prompting.  Some quick noticeable points: UAC now has a few levels of interaction which is a nice change and the start menu is has a little bit of the usefull feel of xp thrown back into it.

My $10 usb 802.11g (realtek based) device was an immediate need so I did a quick search for drivers and couldn’t find anything that was signed (win7 requires signed drivers for everything) and the audio on my board (an Asus A8N-SLI Premium) was not intalled properly.  Asus did have 64bit drivers on their website for my ‘older’ board.

So I broke down and drug a patch cable to my router and ran software updates which, in the end, made me all happy again because the drivers for both wireless and audio were available so I can also listen to music again. yea, no patch cord running across the room.

64bit freeware:

Firewall – Comodo Internet Security (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com) has been winning awards for a while now and has good control for those that wish to delve into it.  For a ‘easy’ firewall with no HIPS, I have seen recommendations for Vista firewall Control (http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html)
Antivirus – Comodo Internet Security (same package as firewall).  If you don’t want to run both antivirus and firewall from Comodo, you can simply choose not to install one or the other.  My 2nd choice for antivirus would have been Avast Home Ed. It’s not a true 64bit app, but the kernel level drivers are 64bit – http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Defragger – JKDefrag which can alse be run as a portable app –
Archiver – PeaZip (http://peazip.sourceforge.net).  PeaZip has a more familiar gui.  A good alternative would be 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org).

Como últimamente no duermo de noche y me dedico a perder el tiempo, el otro día me dió por “investigar” sobre Windows y sus versiones (ahora que hay expectación por el “nuevo” Windows7)…

Today, I was about to VPN into my company’s network, to connect to Exchange among other things.

Ok, Windows Vista Start Button – Connect To – … what? Where’s my VPN connection?

I tried the easy solution, creating a new connection and tried to fire it up. Bam! Instantly I was told that connection failed, and the Diagnose button in the message box that popped up didn’t work. So I rebooted, logged in, and tried it once more. Same thing happened.

Let’s turn the clock a couple of days back; In order to free up system resources, I had looked through the started NT services, and decided that some of them were redundant, so I turned them off / disabled them. One of the services was Telephony. I turned it off, since my computer doesn’t have any analog modem.

Well, it turns out that a lot of the RAS-related services depends upon this service. So since it was disabled, a lot of other services up the chain didn’t start properly.

So, after setting the startup mode to “Automatic” and starting service, my VPN connection reappeared in the Connect to a network dialog.

The morale of this story? Well, don’t just go about disabling a lot of system services without checking their dependency chains thoroughly.

I used some of my weekend to reinstall Windows Vista on my AOpen SFF computer. The previous installation was from November 2006. I have passed the “Best before” date a long time ago, so I’m really looking forward to get all the bits, pieces & necessities installed.

When Dell hopefully releases the E-series this month, I will order a Latitude E6500 which will be the successor to the D830 model. It sports an eSATA port, GPS, DisplayPort, 1920×1200 WLED Display and is capable of managing 8GB of RAM.

I’m not sure yet if I’m going to order a new 24″ or the 27″ monitor yet, it may be that the 24″ is large enough for my desk (I have 2x 19″ Eizo doing 1280×1024 on it now).

The Pro Photo Tools allow you to add, change, and delete common metadata properties for digital photographs. You can place photos on the Live Earth map and then drag them to the right location. The GPS information will be stored back into the photos. If you have a GPS device, can load track route files from the most popular formats (NMEA, GPX, and KML) and see them on the map. Desde siempre uno de los grandes problemas de Windows ha sido que se usa como administrador de sistema, con total control para hacer y deshacer lo que quieras, y eso es un gravísimo riesgo a la hora de sufrir ataques. Hasta Windows XP no existía la posibilidad de una cuenta sin permisos de administrador (creo que con Windows NT había cuentas de invitado, pero no estoy seguro), aunque lo hicieron tan mal que, o eras administrador, o no podías hacer casi nada. Por el contrario, en Linux o Mac, que llevan muchísima más trayectoria en entornos multiusuarios siempre se ha podido usar comandos y permisos de administrador de forma puntual aún no estando funcionando como administrador, de forma que la mayoría de usuarios no son administradores.

Microsoft es consciente de su falta de seguridad y de la reticencia de los usuarios a no usar cuentas de administrador, por lo que en Windows Vista han introducido el famoso “Control de Cuenta de Usuario”, que te regunta confirmación para todo lo que haces, con el fin de “molestar a los usuarios”, según declaraciones textuales de uno de los directivos de Microsoft. Y es que con esto pretenden que los usuarios no usen cuentas de administrador para así facilitar la reducción de problemas de virus, ataques, malware…

Realmente creo que la técnica usada es malísima, ya que aogbia a los usuarios y hace que muchos estén muy descontentos con el sistema. Creo que la solución sería una ventana de información sobre los riesgos de ser administrador y mejorar muchísimo las cuentas de usuario, al estilo de Linux.
