North Ice 2010 Arrives

Just as the cold Northerly winds hit the UK, my new North Ice sails finally arrive.

I had to wait for a delivery from Austria, Nik Baker is the distributor in UK http://www.k66.org.uk/ , I ordered mine from Robin Hood Watersports http://www.roho.co.uk/ , who provided an excellent service.

I have not used them on the water yet, but rigged one up in the garden to try out the VTS (visual trim system), anything that takes the guesswork out of rigging has got to be welcome. The following picture is the complete North Rig out of the box with Silver series boom and RDM mast plus Power XT RDM extension. (Notice the colourful sheets underneath because I did not want to get the rig wet / dirty – sad I know!)

The ratchet handle on the Power XT RDM extension makes down hauling a breeze:

Now the VTS system, Just keep tensioning the downhaul until the sail becomes loose to the chosen mark (min for less wind or max for when its windier):

Setting the boom height, there is a guide to tell you the boom length for the height:

Now pick the clew position (min for less wind, or max for when its windier):

Simples … can’t wait for warmer South Westerly’s to give them a try!

Extreme Sports v Extreme Weather

The weekend saw a continuation of high winds and violent showers on the Isle of Wight. Waves were whipped up and mightily impressive; the sort of conditions that prove all too alluring for those interested in the more extreme sports. At Brook Bay Wighteye came across both exhilarating action and the risks undertaken when things go wrong. The picture shows a windsurfer enjoying the conditions, but in the field at the top of the cliff, a kite surfer was receiving medical aid from a paramedic and and an ambulance crew for a broken leg sustained when wind caught his canopy unexpectedly. Hopefully the young man concerned will make a quick recovery. It’s a reminder of the strength of water and wind and that we need to have a healthy awareness!

Looking through the media, it’s hard to avoid the word ‘Recession’; every day we hear about how the financial state of the world has gotten worse and is going to keep on getting worse. With this constant onslaught of doom and gloom, many of us feel the need to get away from it all and take a holiday, but thanks to the recession we don’t think that we can afford it.

The cost of foreign breaks can be prohibitive with the Pound being weaker than it’s been in a long time compared to the Dollar and the Euro, but there are still ways for us to take a holiday without worrying so much about the cost. With many of us feeling that our traditional summer breaks in the sun are out of our reach until the economy picks back up, this has led to a solid increase in home-grown holidays, with England tours enjoying a particularly sharp rise.

Though it’s easy to see why many people have been forsaking their home country for foreign travel in the summer – the weather being the main reason – England tours can provide just as varied a landscape as many jaunts abroad and it’s nice to see that so many people are using the economic state to rediscover this.

Some people want history from their holiday, and if nothing else, Britain is a land rich in history and most providers of England tours will offer a package which will cater to this, be it visiting the land of King Arthur or an informative trip around other historic areas such as Canterbury or Hastings where people can learn and relax at the same time.

Often available for less than the flight to a foreign country costs, England tours offer an excellent holiday without the stress of airports and without worrying about how the exchange rate isn’t a patch on what it was last year. Windsurfing is a challenging sport, though one that can be enjoyed by children as young as five years old all the way up to adulthood. If you are just starting out, you will want to take lessons. These lessons will ensure that you learn proper techniques and the skills necessary to become an excellent windsurfer. They will also show you how to use your equipment properly.

Your equipment is an important aspect of windsurfing. There are beginner boards that you may want to start out with. The only problem with this is that depending on how quickly you learn, you may progress past a beginner board fairly quickly. While equipment can be expensive, it is a good idea to purchase quality, new equipment even when you are just starting out. Purchasing used equipment whose origin and previous owners you dont know, can be dangerous. You are better off spending a bit extra to ensure your safety. If you take an organized lesson, your equipment may be included in the cost of the classes.

Taking lessons is very important when you are just starting out. It is also important to make sure that your instructor is qualified to teach windsurfing. Windsurfing is a combination of so many other sports, surfing, sailing, skating, etc. that even if you have participated in all of these, you will still need to be taught the proper way to windsurf. Even with lessons, you cant possibly learn everything. Windsurfing is one of those activities that can be different every single time and pose different challenges each trip. As you become more comfortable on your board and more skilled, you will be able to navigate trickier situations and make quicker, split second decisions to keep yourself safe.

Dont get cocky when you first step foot on your board. You may be tempted to do tricks right off the bat, however there are things that you must master first. One of these things is balance. Staying balanced on the board is extremely important to your safety and enjoyment. Until you have mastered this, you should not be trying to show off or impress anyone.

Windsurfing can be a fabulous and exciting way to spend the day. It is a wonderful activity for vacations and can be fun all year round (with the proper clothing). If you havent tried windsurfing yet, dont wait much longer, you have no idea what you are missing!

Windsurfing West Kirby Marine Lake

As I was in Manchester for the weekend I drove over to West Kirby Marine Lake to check it out. This is a large salt water lake near Liverpool that is about 5ft deep. It is great for flat water blasting and freestyle because of the protection of the sea wall. See below for Google maps view:

Wipe-outs are always embarrassing for any windsufer especially when you’re in a competitive heat but maybe not as embarrassing as rapping with the local celidah band at the Lodge Hotel, Tiree. Matt Pritchard is a terrific guy and was a great ambassador for windsurfing and Maui with his kindness and generosity with our group on this recent vacation in Maui. Fri…W wind 20 to 25 kt with gusts to 30 kt. Wind waves 6 ft. W swell 23 ft. Showers.

Swell running 23 feet as it approaches our favorite surfing and windsurfing spots will jack up dramatically higher then that.

E’ il luogo ideale per fare nuove amicizie e fare un pò di nuoto nei mesi estivi. Oltre che essere in un posto affollato da tedeschi e olandesi c’è la possibilità di praticare windsurf, mountain bike, corsa etc.

Chi ha la fortuna di passare per il lago di Garda con camper o rulotte può fare una vacanza breve ed economica. Sconsiglio di lasciare la casa viaggiante posteggiata per più di mezza giornata onde evitare sorprese.

Il Peler è un vento molto debole, ideale per principianti del windsurf e si può trovare solo la mattina, nel pomeriggio l’Ora entra da sud rinforzandosi fino a quando non cala il sole e tutti i surfisti sono già in macchina per raggiungere i ristoranti sparsi sul lungolago.

Il windsurf è parte della mia vita. Pratico questo sport fin da bambino e lo consiglio a tutti quelli che desiderano mettersi alla prova sfidando acqua e vento, affidandosi ad una vela ed ad una tavola.

Per quanto esperti consiglio di indossare sempre il giubbotto salvagente e di non uscire mai soli, specialmente al mare.

f8 and Be There - Get Out and Shoot!

There’s an old adage in photography – “What’s the best way to capture great photographs? f8 and be there.” In other words, if you’re not out there you can’t possibly shoot great photographs.

Now that the sailing season in the Northeast is coming to an end, we decided to heed those words of wisdom and flex our shutters. With no particular destination or subject matter in mind, we set out with cameras, lenses, tripods and our brains to see what we could see. And shoot.

It was great exercise, both for our shutters and our creative minds. We used all of our lenses – telephoto, wide angle, Lensbaby, fisheye – to show the same scene through radically different views. We wandered through fields of wildflowers as the 20 mph winds swirled about. How could we freeze that motion? How could we use that motion to our advantage? We found moving water and experimented with using shutter speeds and apertures to make the same water look different in every shot. And we happened upon a group of windsurfers which provided the familiar opportunity to shoot some sails.

Here are a few of our 300+ shots from our safari. They may not win any awards or make it into National Geographic, but that’s not the point. The point is that we learned a lot and had fun. If you have a camera, get out there and have some fun of your own.

A Sad Lack of Windsurfing

I love windsurfing. I love that feeling of going faster than you thought possible, inches from the water, wondering when you’re inevitably going to crash.

I got reasonably good at it last year. Being a featherweight 8.5 stone (No, really… I’m tiny) helps a lot and although I didn’t quite crack waterstarting I can beach start in waist deep water reliably, which is progress I guess.

The thing is, I haven’t been windsurfing at all this year as the Land Rover’s been off the road for a while leaving me with no means of transporting my board. Now the weather’s getting colder again so it doesn’t look like I’m going to get any windsurfing at all in this year. I’m a complete wuss – I just can’t stand being chilly.

Maybe next year…

RS:X European Windsurfing Team Racing Championships- Day 4
