So Jawn, you missed a day oh wells, that cant be helped let me show you what i did within the days i

So Jawn, you missed a day oh wells, that cant be helped let me show you what i did within the days i missed. But first!

Excuses You must hear em.
My internet is currently capped at the momment i am so surprised i can actually post stuff, but it is disheartening for me to wait more than a minute to have anything load up, knocked back to the old 56kbps days sigh… if everything werent so high tech.

So its my friend’s Ross’ birthday tomorrow, and yeah i owe this guy big time ahaha, he was the main influence of me starting FOA with the other guys as an idea, although i havent been following his plans it was mainly his enthusiasm that made me start this site. So without further ado this is what i have been doing on the past two days:

So yeah ross doesnt like manga as much as he does with regular comics so i dont have any other comics in my room except for the Wildstorm World of Warcraft ones, so they sufficed, I picked a random page i thought would require alot of effort. With practice copying you want to push yourself to the limit with whatever it is your copying. It wouldnt matter if its a single page or something simple with 8 to 9 panels. if you think you can do it persistance will pay off.

First of all the major difference between Manga and that of Comics is the stages they use, From what i recall Manga has multiple stages, and all are pretty much equal in terms of “consistency” and “Quality”. (My manga theory and stuff may differ from you guyse, but if you think i am wrong feel free to mention in comments or send me hate mail I know ross probably will when he reads this. Comics from dark horse and other stuff require that high level of intensity and quality, at least the comics i read anyway. A page could take up to 10 hours or even more just on pencilling their focus on the fine detail is so incredible and is a good learning experience.

First of all if you haven’t seen Stephen Platt’s video on comic book penciling, it is an excellent tool to have, I have watched his video countless times and everytime i watch it i pick up something new. Its exceptionally awesome, jaw dropping to over 9000 levels. I think i have a screenshot of me watching while talking to ppl on msn

Here:

and here:

Fyi thats Mio in the background… more on that later lol.

So some tips that i pulled from.

If you Want consistancy in lines use a H4 pencil. I frequently draft in H4, and the image above is rendered in H4. H4 is very hard and wont smudge as much when your moving your hand across the paper it helps alot, it wont break when you push down as hard (Unless your superman and manage to use your strength to muck it up lols) this means less sharpening time and more lasting pencils. H4 is what i have been using for the past year or so when it comes to drawing stuff for friends and family I have just told my sister to start using it and her stuff has been alot cleaner since then. Oh yeah i did mention that your lines become cleaner right? Because it is hard and consistency erasing wont be a problem. It offers a similar effect in photoshop when you have pressure sensitivity on your brush. Its good I highly reccommend that anyone who is going to do any drawing of some sort to just DRAFT in H4 its even possible to render in H4. I have just proven it.

Paper isn’t much of an issue, For this one i always use the standard manga paper >_> I am using the I-C INC. Manga Paper B4, 180mmx270mm 110kg paper. Its good and tough and i liek the stuff its better than the ordinary paper i use for practice. and it has lines showing where i should draw my panels.

Personal tips:

Firstly eyes and facial features, render them first, they make your life easier, and while your pencil is sharp your renders will make your life easier.

Work in batches, Render from one area to another area, I usually render left to right on the panel, or what i like to render first it makes your life easier.

Don’t rush or get impatient. Once that happens its all over, after awhile you’ll become dissatisfied and disorientated and you will start noticing mistakes. When rendering especially something for a friend, try not to rush. If you get impatient put the drawing aside and take a break, play a couple of games, grab a drink. Nothing ruins the day by noticing you have major mistakes in the drawings (Minor is acceptable i guess). Sure you can erase em, but if you outline and render in anything above 4H you will definitely be raging so hard. Prevent what is preventable.

The Outcomes:

Firstly: Increased Patience, nothing beats patience the longer you wait for something the more worthwhile it is, which is why whenever i open a comic or even a manga in general you will be incredibly awed by what is presented in front of you. To achieve that level of render does not happen immediately. It takes long days of practice and wasted live to achieve it. Patience is part of practice the final product i timed is between 7 to 8 hours of work. It certainly payed off.

Secondly: Every person who has sketched something in high detail and then return to their normal drawing form will find added detail in the same time, able to draw drafts and sketches alot quicker than usual and the ability to apply good renders from what you have learned from the practice. Practice does not mean increased ability to draw, its an expansion of talent. It is something you will be able to remember years from now. I stopped drawing between my age 18 to 20 switching from hardcore to casual and back to hardcore, the skills i have learnt when i was 6-18 still remain with me. Every practice you do will carry over skills and abilities that you have learnt on to your next project and can be applied years from now.

Lastly: Self satisfaction. Sure you wasted 7.5 hours of your life drawing something that 3 years from now may look crap, as an artist your always improving knowing when you are satisfied with what you have done is a key development to self improvement. As long as you are satisfied with what you do no matter what people say or do (even if its hurtful) your achievement is yours and yours only, of course there are external influences but they matter into your improvement.

Thats it for now, theres more i can talk about but that will defy the meaning of my blog and i will have nothing to say next time lol.

So the guys who skipped all that who aren’t artists, I have K-on! fever and I am going to start playing Bass guitar soon (random christmas pressie from me to me) I am close to getting one of these! Link:

I wrote 50,000 words in twenty-five days. Five days ahead of schedule. I am so proud and so tired.

This is what happened when I posted my most recent update. I was surprised. I didn’t even expect it and then this popped up on my screen.

And this is my winner badge.

I’m so proud of myself. I know all the other NaNoers are going to be mad at me for saying this but I never thought I wouldn’t be able to finish. I actually found it quite easy to do 1667 or more words a day. But that’s probably because I’ve been developing this story idea for three years and this finally gave me the excuse to write it. Still, I’m quite shocked. I never thought I’d actually get to 50,000. Well, here I am. I did it. Now I can get back to blogging.

Now I can slow down, take a deep breath, and figure out what my novel is really about. I was writing so fast (and I got so many story ideas in just the last few days alone), it’ll take a while to sort it all out. But that’s what Re-write Month is for, eh? And now that I know how to use yWriter for structure, I may actually end up with a story that I can let somebody read. Someday. Maybe.

Now I’m going to finish my tenth cup of coffee and treat myself to a great big cinnamon roll to celebrate. WOOHOO! Bring on the goodies!

I’ve been taking advantage of the Thanksgiving down time to do a bit of filing and shredding,

I’ve been taking advantage of the Thanksgiving down time to do a bit of filing and shredding, and in the process I came across a book review I wrote for the Social Informatics seminar last spring of Langdon Winner’s Whale and the Reactor: A Search for Limits in an Age of High Technology. Even though it was published in 1986, I find it to still be extremely relevant. And I was reminded again as I read my review of how much this book has influenced my own research trajectory and approach. So I thought I would post my review here.

In The Whale and the Reactor, Langdon Winner provides a trenchant analysis of the political dimensions of technology. Although situated in both philosophy of technology and political science, Winner describes it as a ‘work of criticism’, in the tradition of the more familiar literary criticism. He argues for going beyond viewing technology merely in terms of its development and tool-like use to instead look at how technologies contribute to the structuring and organization of human practice and meaning, and shape the very nature of our existence.

The book is a collection of essays divided into three parts: Philosophy of Technology; Technology: Reform and Revolution; and Excess and Limit. In the first section, he considers the nature of technology, particularly as it relates to politics and society. He portrays technologies as ‘forms of life’ that actively shape human activity and meaning; regarding them as morally neutral leads, in his view, to ‘technological somnabulism’ in which we as a society “sleepwalk through the process of reconstituting the conditions of human existence” (p. 10). He also shows how artifacts can have political qualities by either effectively deciding social issues through their existence or configuration, or by being inherently political. Lastly, he considers technē and politeia, highlighting ways in which technical systems can play the same role as politics in structuring society, only with much less deliberation put into their design than is involved in other democratic political processes.

In the second section on reform and revolution, Winner critiques several concepts and terms that have been used in discussions of technology. He takes the history of the ‘appropriate technology’ movement as one example, telling how it gave up on the broad societal changes pursued by its more radical forebears to instead see hope for societal change in consumerist visions of better technology. Instead of trying to change the world, their goal became building ‘better mousetraps’. Winner also critiques the notion of ‘decentralization’, shedding light on what is a frequently-used but fuzzy concept and pointing out that technological development has tended to reduce the number of centers of control. The concept of ‘computer revolution’ is his last target. He identifies as ‘mythinformation’ the standard argument of computer romantics that computers can provide people with information which will then become knowledge, which will lead to power which will lead to democracy. Although the perceived logic of inevitable social progress through technological development is attractive, Winner points out that there are flaws in every step of this (implicit) argument.

In the third and final section on excess and limit, Winner looks at some of the more overtly political aspects of technology. He explores how conceptions of nature, the framing of issues in terms of risk assessment versus hazard, and the casting of issues in terms of human values can shape environmental policy and decisions. He concludes with a chapter of personal memoir in which he describes how he came to be interested in these political dimensions of technical systems. He summarizes his experience with technological development, as crystallized in his experience of seeing a whale surface in the ocean just offshore from a nuclear power plant construction site, as that of technology going where it has never been.

The Whale and the Reactor is insightful, and at times witty and provocative. Winner points to the urgent need to think clearly and decide democratically about the world we are building through technological systems. However, he by and large leaves open the problem of how to go about addressing this need. One is left with a sense of the importance and urgency of these issues, but generally must look elsewhere for the tools and strategies with which to address them.

Winner’s overarching concern with putting limits on technology (as reflected even in the title of the book) seems to reflect an assumption that problems with technology are ones of scope and degree rather than character, a slant that is perplexing in light of his simultaneous call to look at the political qualities and effects of specific artifacts. Winner is not anti-technology by any means, so this connotation of technology poisoning everything it touches is an odd conceptual dissonance.

Winner’s primary contribution with this book is in his persuasively making the case that technology is political. It is an ordering of the world and human activity. And not only is technology political, but political decisions can also be effected by technological means. In light of this argument that Winner makes, technological decisions should be made consciously, wisely, democratically, and under the full weight of their significance.

The winner of the Shugo Chara Egg Amulet Diamond contest has been announced to be Tanabe Nanami. She is in 4th grade of elementary school.

Here is a picture of the new Shugo Chara Egg as a group:

I’m glad to see that they have finally selected a winner, even though it will take some time I think she will fit in with the group perfectly. She will most likely be part of the next Guardians 4 single (or a Shugo Chara Egg single) but we have to wait and see what happens.

Congratulations to Tanabe-chan on winning the Shugo Chara Egg auditions, and hopefully we can get to hear her sing soon.

Tanabe Nanami will appear in Shugo Chara! Party! on 12/5.

Tie Buddies was kind enough to send us a set of race car Tie Buddies for review, and are offering one of our readers their choice of Tie Buddies for a boy or a girl.

Tie Buddies are really cute, and a wonderful idea. I do want to start with there is a choking warning on the front of their package, I do think that’s responsible of them. As these are small, and if removed could very well pose a choking hazard.

These are an aid to help your child(ren) learn to tie their shoes. Not only does this help to learn to tie their shoes, it helps them tie a more secure knot. It’s not fun at any age to tie, and retie a loose shoe lace.

They are sized well enough to slide right onto laces of shoes, and little hands can maneuver them about. Creating simple stories with your child, and teaching him/her to tie their shoes can create lasting memories, and priceless quality time with your kids.

As I mentioned above we were sent Race Car Tie Buddies. Ours are blue squares, 2 with red, 2 with green race cars on them. The girls Tie Buddies are Fairies and Wands.

They really are so cute! And I think fairly priced at $8.99. Tie Buddies, ship quickly, and their site is rather easy to navigate. Easy navigation to shop on a website is a big plus from me. Nine step instructions are printed on the back of the package, as well as on their site in case the packaging gets ripped while opening them.

Well, the NaNoWriMo people opened up the links to have one’s novel declared a winner. I logged into my account and I checked on my wonderful writing buddies, and I was thrilled to see several of them have already won. While I am over the moon for their success, my lack thereof is making me whiny. I want to be a winner too!

I am close; less than 3,500 words to go. I should get there either tonight or tomorrow, and while the satisfaction of completing such a stupendous task is still motivation, somehow the tiny little “WINNER” bar has surpassed all my intrinsic desires. I want that little winner bar too, and I’m going to pout until I get it!

Now that I’ve let my inner toddler have her say I should be able to focus on finishing my novel. I am glad I decided to blog my progress. It hasn’t even been thirty days yet, and I am struggling to remember how I felt at various points throughout the journey. I haven’t even finished yet and I find I am already feeling sad that it’s almost over. I think I cursed myself for my folly in attempting this, but even so, I’m already contemplating entering next year!

So, I’m one of those starving artists, a writer with nothing in print since my high school newspaper. But that’s okay. Because recently, I got a taste of the glamorous life.

I came home the other day–yes, I still live with my parents, and there is NO SHAME in that!–and hit the button on the answering machine. The thing is so annoying, sitting there…beep…beep…beep. Anyways, there was a message saying something about “Check your email, you’ve won our contest.” The message was for my mom, and it was obviously some sort of scam, but I gave her a call besides. She wasn’t too concerned and told me she’d check it later. When later rolled around, I got a frantic phone call–the local TV station had awarded us five-thousand dollars in gift certificates. My jaw hit the floor.

So, besides the Hallmark Store, these certificates were not to the places I usually shop. I got all dolled up and slipped into my rarely-worn slacks (I’m more of a blue jeans kind of girl) and we headed off for our first shopping adventure.

We headed into the city, and the houses we passed just got bigger and bigger. The “mall” that this store was located in turned out to be an open-air, opulent looking, well, town. (I found out yesterday that since I was there, they’ve started having valet parking.)

But I was ready. I was lookin’ good, and had my game on. You just have to know how to deal with these snooty rich types. You have to make them think you’re one of them. I’d seen it done in dozens of movies.

I strode in just like I belonged there, an uninterested twist upon my lips. I nonchalantly examined the manikins in the front window, then moved on to dresses hanging along the wall.

One of the perfectly dressed, botoxed old ladies who worked there approached. “May I help you with anything?” she asked.

“No,” I replied, smiling, “I’m just looking.”

Oh, yeah. The illusion was complete. It was not what I had said, but the confidence with which I had said it. I was in. I had been accepted.

I heard the door jingle and saw my mom out of the corner of my eye. About that time I looked down at the price tag of the dress I was holding. I was expecting Abercrombie prices, maybe a little more. After all, this was a classy place. It was well-known for its furs. (which, by the way, I was NOT interested in. Poor little minks.) But the tag I held in my hand had to be a misprint. Twelve hundred bucks? No way.

About that time, one of the sales ladies found my mom. “Can I help you?” she asked. How courteous.

Then my illusion shattered. “Well, this is what’s going on,” my mom replied. I turned slowly, groaning inwardly. “See, I’m not used to shopping in this kind of place, but I won this gift card…”

My fun was over. I’d been found out. No more pretending to be a spoiled little rich kid or a rising country music star. Back to plain-Jane starving artist for me.

So, what was in store for the rest of my shopping trip? Check back soon for my famous charade, part II.

Ashes to Ashes short story by Harold Pinter. Obviously i had a reason to see a play, i’m not an outrageous kinda guy who randomly watches plays.

I went as a friend was in the male role. Ashes to Ashes play is a 2 person cast, around 30 minutes long and an interesting play which i have no idea what it was about. I’m sure they were married and the wife was a crazy person but beyond that I was just supporting a friend.

My nameless from bossed the male role. I was very impressed by his acting, it had life, feeling and he suited the role well. Well done Sir, I give you 5/5 for that part. The woman was lifeless, no idea who she was. The director may have interpreted her psyhosis as lifeless but the depiction didn’t do it for me at all.

I’ve started looking at 3rd Year Modules for University, apart from being excluded from the majority as i’m joint honours, they all look dull. I need to decide soon what my choices are as my timetable will dictate if I have a need to live away from home another year or stay and home and be set myself up for moving away when my job offers roll in.
Speaking of job offers a large white PriceWaterCoopers envelope landed on my floor in Baildon. I’m nervous about it, that app too ages. I do reckon it’s just a brochure and a sorry letter though .

Peace

The time has come for me to announce the big winner! I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Loving This Tee contest for a free “Panda” t-shirt from Rotten Thread! As I mentioned in the contest post, I did not select a random winner, but instead let someone else choose the winning pair of names. My friend had quite a difficult time narrowing the list down to 10 pairs of names, and it was even more difficult narrowing it down to just one.

So who’s the winner? Let’s first see the names that were assigned to these two pandas!

And there you have it. The pandas’ names are Jobin and Cityslicka! Congratulations to Cory for winning a “Panda” tee from Rotten Thread! I will be e-mailing you shortly about how to claim your free t-shirt.

For those who did not win this time, I have enjoyed reading all of your submissions and I thank you again for joining in on the panda-naming fun! You are all winners in my book. I hope to see all of you in the next Loving This Tee competition!

For up-to-date information on new posts and contests, follow the Loving This Tee Twitter! There, you will also find many great deals and information from many different t-shirt companies.
