When something taste like ‘noting’ what is this nothing? You taste this ‘nothing

When something taste like ‘noting’ what is this nothing? You taste this ‘nothing’ when you are not eating anything, or when there is no any distinct taste in your mouth. But is this taste ‘nothing’? I randomly came across this fact and I find it fascinating. This taste that apparently has no taste is actually our own saliva. So technically, it really isnt nothing, but it is it’s own taste. Our taste buds are just so accustomed to it, that it treats it as the ‘neutral’ taste. So next time think about when you are about to say stuff like ‘Man this doesn’t taste like anything.’ or ‘ I can’t taste anything at the moment.’ You are tasting something, your spit.

Alright another thought that I came across today. Winnie the Pooh. So basically it is a ‘pooh’ named Winnie. Alright so what is this pooh that has a name named after it? I understand taht Winnie the Pooh is a stuffed bear, but really? Pooh? Where did it come from? I was in complete shock over this up until someone explained it to me. His name is Winnie the Pooh, that is it’s whole name. Pooh is just part of his name. Alright, now that brings me to the next question, who in the world would name something with the word ‘the’ in it? Yes I understand, an example would be Alexander the Great, but that is only his nickname, a name he is known for, he had an actual legit name before that. But what about pooh? If Winnie the Pooh is actually the actual name of the yellow honey bear, how does that name make sense?

At the latest edition of Choice Cuts, we paid tribute to the movie Tilsammans with husmanskost, classic Swedish comfort food.

Ganda lent some excellent recipes and her expertise. Check out, for example, her meatball-rolling abilities.

I’m a big fan of meatballs and have eaten innumerable iterations of them — in Sweden too — and made a few mostly Italian versions, but these are truly magical.

The recipe comes from Ganda’s copy of Leif Mannerström’s The Art of Home Cooking and it calls for equal amounts of ground beef and pork to be mixed with breadcrumbs soaked in milk and beaten eggs, two onions, one grated raw, the other chopped fine and browned, mashed potatoes, veal stock, soy sauce, and anchovy extract (I used whole fish, preserved in oil, and threw them in with the onion when it was nearly done to break them down).

Mannerström suggests piping the mixture into balls, but we found it easier just to roll them by hand. The meatballs are browned in butter (best done in the cast-iron skillet or nonstick, I unfortunately discovered), and for gravy, you just deglaze the pan with some water.

They’re totally worth it.

While I know that NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, my mind is still so fickle about things that I know I would start up on a story, get bored and leave it behind only to start again some week later, so my ‘WriMo works are selected titles in a large list that I write upon.

My personal daily goal: 1,800 word per entry.

Under this cut, one of many files. Some may contain non-heterosexual relationship but none of the works will touch the sexual aspect of things. All works, I’m hoping, will be PG-13.

Please enjoy your read.

I wasn’t supposed to survive. That’s what they thought, I knew that much, I only had to look at them for all of a minute. That or simply look around to my surroundings. Locked out of the orphanage, how cruel could you be? I knew I didn’t have long anyway so what was the point? They didn’t want me to make the other orphans ill so I had to stay outside with little more than a blanket. Cruel indeed, isn’t it? I didn’t blame them then, I accepted my illness as much as a child of that age could.

So there I was, on the steps, huddling with my ever thin blanket, winter coming in strongly and he appeared, out of nowhere. The words he first spoke I could not understand for the life of me until he spoke in Russian, the only language I understood then. He asked me what I was doing there. Asked me why I couldn’t go back inside and told me he would take me to the hospital. They didn’t take care of me there, who would have? Just an orphan in the street, dying, who cared? Filthy little thing I was.

The man brought me back to his hotel. I’d never been in a bed quite so comfortable, it was discomforting. Then he had soup. I didn’t know what soup was, back then so I only ended up staring at him as if he had two heads, or close enough.

My beginning under Remy’s care was rough but it became rather quickly visible that they wouldn’t let me die as they would other have out there on those steps. The first few years were a little strained if only because it wasn’t altogether easy to get my health back under control. I was winded a little too quickly for anyone’s taste but there was no helping it. I was like Adrian. I’d met him ever briefly, too quickly he was gone and I did miss him when he was gone.

I looked like a younger version of him, so strange that, almost as if another him had been born some years later and just not in the right place. I know that’s not the case but at times it helped me get through my days when I told myself that maybe I was a little bit of him that wasn’t ready to go just yet. It made me feel better, it made me feel like I belonged.

When I was old enough, I took up the violin and Adrian’s things sort of became mine. I had a natural talent for most instruments that didn’t require air and fingers nimble enough to get where I needed to with just a little push and some confidence. When I enrolled into a school—the conservatory—where people who didn’t know him certainly had lived all of their lives under a rock, things became a little different. I think it was a good thing that I ended up settling into the boarding part of it all despite that home wasn’t all that far.

I was trying to come to terms with the size of the shoes I had stepped into. I looked like a younger version of him, people expected so much and I pushed myself more than I ever had before. It had been difficult, so very hard but I pulled through. Of course, those were three years of my life I spent away, writing often and calling but I barely ever visited. I couldn’t. I told them that much when I called and wrote. I had to stay for my three years.

Of course, when I finally came back, one of those issues I know I had enrolled into the conservatory to avoid came back to haunt me. Luc is family. Even though we’re not blood related. He’s an older brother, I should have loved him as that was, an older brother but there was something else in me, a pull and I quite thoroughly wanted him as a complete part of my life, not as a brother.

Didn’t go so well those things, that one visit for the holidays just a few months before I was going to graduate from the conservatory. Though we did eventually come to terms with the fact that we both seemed to care for one another as more than brothers, the idiot got himself in an accident and I was sure he was going to die. He didn’t, of course but I still worried. Mothered him a bit much but there’s no helping that. Aside from Remy and Winnie—I miss her so much too—and the close family, Luc was the one I was closest to, losing him would have been like losing a big part of myself.

At one point, I had this concert in Quebec, up north, in an ice hotel. The idea alone made my skin crawl. It would be cold, I couldn’t wear my coat, it would have hindered my motions. So I didn’t. It went well until just about the end where I all out collapsed. Or I figure I collapsed, I really just remember feeling faint and cold, Luc holding me to him like I’d fade in a foggy breath through the air if he didn’t and the car on its way to the hospital. I hate hospitals.

I spent too much time in them though most of the time I saw the medics back home, I really shouldn’t complain.

Give it a little more time and things were fine, at least until we were celebrating another concert back home, things got a little, um.. hot for lack of a better word for it and he called the wrong name. I never left a place quite so quick. I know I shouldn’t have blamed him, I couldn’t. I learned later on that alcohol tends to not be so good on his brain, though we hadn’t really expected to drink as much as we had, things went overboard. I left and huddled back home with my adoptive parents while my brother-slash-boyfriend tried to make amends before things just went sort of quiet.

I wanted to find my own apartment, my own home but Remy wouldn’t let me leave quite yet. Of course when I found out why, I had nothing left to say, nothing to really offer. I had my own little home, all mine! Of course by then I felt the need to fix things with Luc so I did invite him over. The details of that discussion are fuzzy, I just remember raising my voice a little, I know I misunderstood his intentions and things went sourly downhill.

He left, I tried to get the keys to the house back to Remy and he told me to either sell or rent the place out if I couldn’t stay. I didn’t really want to do either though I eventually did. I couldn’t leave the house without any inhabitants for six months. I had a contract way across the continent, across the water to be honest, in Paris. Six months with concerts left and right. I had a small room there and it was all I really needed.

I could have had so much more during my stay there but I didn’t want to. Anything more reminded me of Luc and he was the last thing I really wanted to think about. Not because of what had happened, not because of anything that had been shared between us. Because I kept on telling myself that if I thought about him, I wouldn’t pull through the six months and would want to go back home to where he was. I missed him terribly but a childish part of me wanted to remain mad at him. I wanted to believe that he was at fault for our last fight.

By the end of my contract, I did end up writing him a letter. There was so much I did want to write, so much I wrote down but scribbled over. The only thing that stayed on that paper, amongst the black scribbles, was a very simple ‘I’m sorry’. He came to my last concert and swept me away once it was done. I don’t think I ever cried so hard before in my life.

Things were settling again, I was back home, I relaxed a little, tried to settle back in. Momma died not long after I actually came back. There were so many people surrounding her. The families in this part of the city, few but big families, we’re all close. Or I should say, they’re all close. I’ve always been a little distant. Not that I didn’t want to make friends, I was just too shy to.

Momma’s passing was hard on dad and he disappeared now and again for a few days, a week or two. We all could see that it was doing him some good, so wherever he was going, we didn’t mind. Whoever took care of him, whatever he did, he came back looking a little brighter each time.

Time did drift and trickle away. The holidays always seem to sneak up on you when you least expected them. I wanted to buy something special for Luc so I bugged Remy—figuratively, he’s mostly always given me everything I ever asked for—to go shopping and so we did. On the way to the store itself, a storm started up, snow and a little wind. Not much of a storm then but it did get worse, so much worse. By the time we were out of the store, it was an all out storm with the wind so strong I know my foot slipped a few times. The day had been so warm beforehand that I hadn’t thought to wear my warmest coat. By the time we were back home I was down with a fever.

Or at least I figure that’s what happened. I’m with Adrian and Winnie now. ‘ drian tells me that it’s temporary, that I’m just having something of an out of body experience while my body settles in a coma. Shouldn’t last long I’m being told. It does bug me a little since I don’t want them to worry so much over me. I can’t really see what’s going on down there but I can imagine that Luc might just squeeze me too hard when I’ll wake.

I was missing Adrian, I barely had been able to see him when I was a fresh and new addition to the family, it feels strange to be able to spend time with him now but I enjoy it while I can. There’s this strange blue-haired boy that pops up and around now and again, I don’t think he likes me much, it’s strange but I know I’ll be going back down soon so I don’t let it get to me much. I spend a good amount of time with momma too. It feels good to be able to curl in her arms again, even if it’s for a short period of time.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to tell them about who I saw while I was in that coma. Stupid sickness. Maybe I won’t even remember it? I know some people talk about near-death experience but is that really what this is? I saw no white tunnels and no nothing else. Just ‘drian and Winnie and other pretty winged beings. So strange up here but so peaceful. I miss Luc though, I hope to go back down soon enough.

I hope that I’ll have been good enough in my life to come up here once it really is my time. Not that it’s something I really want to think about. The idea of leaving Luc behind a second time—or would that make it a third?—makes me ill. Maybe not physically but it hurts so much I could double over and not get back up again. It tears me to itty bitty pieces to think about abandoning him again. I can’t imagine how he feels when I’m not there. When I was in Paris, now in this stupid coma.

I’ll need to make it up to him.

I’ll admit it. I would never, in a month of Sundays, put Sadie on my daughter’s birth certificate. It would be Sarah, thanks very much, just in case she grows up to run for office or take up brain surgery or otherwise wants to sound like a mature, serious adult.

I’m not necessarily in the majority. And I’m not necessarily right, either. Plenty of women named Julie and Jodie have turned out just fine. And plenty of Sarah/Sadies are irritated at having to constantly explain that yes, Sadie is a nickname for Sarah.

So for your consideration, I’ve pulled together a list of ends-in-ie-names just might stand on their own.

I’m excluding choices like Katie and Maggie - names easily connected to formal versions, as well as feminizations like Billie and Charlie. And if it more commonly ends in -y, you won’t find it here – so no Mollie, Lillie or Lucie.

That still leaves bunches of names:

Arlie – Arline started out as a well-born child kidnapped by gypsies in a nineteenth century opera, but today she’s the outdated Arlene. Arlie might be a short form, or she may related to a surname. Either way, she sounds fresher than the -een ending original.

Birdie – Lady Bird was worn in the White House. Actress Busy Phillips bestowed this avian appellation on her daughter. While there are more subtle ways to evoke the finely feathered, Birdie isn’t quite unthinkable.

Bonnie – Worn by the ill-fated daughter of Rhett and Scarlett in Gone With the Wind – who was actually named Eugenie Victoria. She means pretty – and she is just that.

Callie – If Kelly and Kaylee are independent given names for girls, why not Callie? She’s also a possible nickname for classics like Caroline and Charlotte, as well as the less-expected Calla, Calista or Calliope.

Dessie – In Ireland, Dessie is a nickname for Desmond – and thus, exclusively masculine. In the US, it sounds more like a riff on Bessie.

Dulcie – She’s sweet – literally, from the Latin dulcis. Longer form Dulcinea conjures up the Judybats, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Don Quixote – though the literary Dulcinea was actually named Aldonza.

Erie – Eir was a Norse goddess; Éire, a Celtic one – she lent her name to Ireland. Eiry is a Welsh girl’s name – related names abound, all meaning snow. Erie may be linked to any or none of the above, and could rhyme with fairy, or have a totally other pronunciation.

Hattie – You might put Harriet or Henrietta on the birth certificate, but millinery references aside, Hattie has some style.

Hettie – Another possibility for Henrietta, as well as Hester or Hestia.

Lettie – Formal name options include the salad-esque Lettice, or the lacy Letitia. If Victorian valentine isn’t your style, Lettie might appeal.

Lindie – Lucky Lindy was aviator Charles Lindbergh’s nickname. The Lindy Hop was a swing-era dance craze named in his honor. Linda is a Baby Boomer – as are elaborations like Melinda and Belinda. But today, Lindie might work as a nickname for hippie chic tree name Linden – or on her own.

Lottie – Charlotte is in the US Top 100 and rising, but it seems as very few Charlottes are answering to this nickname – so far.

Maisie – Like Maggie, she could be a diminutive form of Margaret, via the Scottish Mairead. But if Daisy stands on her own, maybe Maisie does, too.

Millie – Mildred might be too dowdy to ever make a comeback, but Millie is Thoroughly Modern. She’s also a spunky nickname for the super-sweet Millicent.

Minnie – Yes, there’s the mouse. But there’s also the actress – who was actually born Amelia Fiona Driver.

Tillie – Matilda is ever so fashion forward. Short form Tilda brings to mind the actress. Then there’s Tillie – perhaps a bit too cute, but possibly wearable on her own.

Trudie – It’s hard to imagine naming a daughter Gertrude. But Trudie seems like a logical sister for Sadie – spunky, retro and not too flimsy to stand on her own.

Zadie – If Sadie stands along, why not her zippy cousin? The z-to-s switch has worked out just fine for novelist Zadie Smith.

Zelie – There have definitely been women named Zelie, but her exact origins are unclear, though some link her to the French Zéline and she brings to mind the Yiddish Zelig.

I could go on – there’s Winnie and Elsie, Flossie and Roxie. But I’ll stop here and just ask: would you consider a short, ends-in-ie name for a daughter? And if so, would you put it on her birth certificate or opt for a more formal version?

In 1921 un inginer german, Max Braun punea bazele unui mic atelier de produse electronice in Frankfu

In 1921 un inginer german, Max Braun punea bazele unui mic atelier de produse electronice in Frankfurt pe Main. Cum perioada respectiva a cunoscut o explozie a radioului, specializarea atelierului era in componente pentru aparate radio.

In 1984 Gillette a cumparat si Oral-B punandu-si serios amprenta pe acest segment de produse prin investitii masive in tehnologie si marketing. Acesta din urma a propulsat Oral-B in topul vanzarilor din Statele Unite si nu numai lansand prima periuta pentru copii sub licenta Star Wars in 1984. In acelasi an Braun, divizie separata a Gillette creeaza prima periuta electrica cu miscari pe 3 axe.

Restul e business modern.

Hudson will play Winnie Mandela in a film that begins production May 30 in the South African locations of Johannesburg, Capt Town, Transkei and Robben Island, where the future president spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.

“Winnie” will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt, the veteran South African filmmaker whose 2006 film “Yesterday” was Africa’s Best Foreign Film nominee, and who also directed “Cry, The Beloved Country,” and “Sarafina!”

While Nelson Mandela — who’ll be played by Morgan Freeman in the Clint Eastwood-directed “Invictus” — is a universally sympathetic figure for his struggle against apartheid, his former wife is a far more complicated figure. She has been depicted as the mother and wife who was a steadfast supporter of her activist husband and who was jailed herself for campaigning for his release and fighting against apartheid. Her image was subsequently tarnished by association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year old alleged informer, and she was later convicted of fraud.

The filmmakers will tell the whole story, good and bad.

“I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson said. “Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”

Hudson, who is expected to sing the film’s theme song, won the Oscar for her screen debut in “Dreamgirls’ and followed with “The Secret Life of Bees” and “Sex in the City.”

If you haven’t seen her before, here is Winnie for the first time. If you have seen her, lets just remind ourselves of how fashionable she really is. And when I refer to ’she’ I mean the Winnie heel. I am obsessed with the cuff! Now tell me, who wants to wear these?

THE LOOK: DANGEROUS ON THE DANCE FLOOR

In this look I styled Ang (my model) in a grey tank with a black A-line mini skirt. I love the details on the skirt, it’s adorable and perfect for making a statement. I also put tights on her and a fabulous layered necklace to play with the tank. I felt white hoop earrings and a flower bracelet would help play up this look. And of course my favorite part, it the Winnie heel by Matiko, which you can purchase here: Matiko Winnie.

How would you wear these fabulous heels?

Or five or six.

[Warning for the faint of -- ahem: scores of undoubtedly cute little chickens, ducks, and guinea fowl gave their lives for this post.]

For the last edition of Choice Cuts, we screened the Jules Dassin short of Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” So obviously, I had to cook some hearts.

My favorite meatmongers at Dickson’s Farmstand Meats (now permanently brick-and-mortared at Chelsea Market) happened to have three bags of various bird hearts for me. However, they were also mixed in with gizzards and livers, so I spent an hour or two picking through the sacks, rinsing and sorting.

I fried them in butter, as per Fergus Henderson, deglazed with a little vincotto, and put those chewy, saucy little hearts on toast. Sprinkle with parsley, serve, rinse, repeat.
