Peter Oborne reports on a CCHQ note which states:

“The Conservatives have never won a General Election from a starting point as weak as they face now … To become Prime Minister, David Cameron must surpass the electoral achievements of both Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill.”

The vogue for presenting David Cameron as the PM in waiting has made it far easier than it should be to forget how big a mountain he has to climb. James Macintyre reports of private polling commissioned by Number Ten that shows Labour ahead of the Conservatives. This would mean that Cameron hasn’t even left base camp, never mind virtually ascended to the summit, but Iain Dale suspects the hand of Labour spinners in the Macintyre report.

Even if Dale is right to do so, this explanation cannot be attached to the positive polling for Labour in yesterday’s Observer, which is more than enough to make the “PM in waiting” very nervous, not least given the cracks in Tory discipline and Labour’s renewed resolve to be fighters, not quitters.

I bought this book to assist with an assignment on the command skills of Abraham Lincoln. Author Eliot A. Cohen (left), also examines the records of Georges Clemenceau, Winston Churchill and David Ben-Gurion in an effort to synthesize why they stand above others as leaders in time of war. So far, after reading the first few chapters, I’m quite impressed. Full disclosure: I own the 2002 paperback version of this book published in the UK by The Free Press. I recently purchased the audio version from Audible.com published by Blackstone Audiobooks and narrated by Robert Whitfield (a.k.a.
Next Tuesday, thousands of Public Sector workers will go on strike in protest at the proposed reduc

Next Tuesday, thousands of Public Sector workers will go on strike in protest at the proposed reductions in the Public Sector pay bill. The Government are looking for a reduction of €1.3 Billion in this area out of the total €4 Billion needed to stabilise the public finances.

Until last year, I was a member of the Teachers Union of Ireland. I’ll be very honest, I’m not a major fan of the unions but there is serious pressure on teachers for example to join a union. I would say that it is the same throughout the various professions : nurses, gardai, firemen, civil servants etc. I joined initially for the perks involved i.e. cheaper loans / mortgages and insurance etc.

Social Partnership over the past 20 years has been of great benefit to workers and to employers. In particular, those working in the public sector i.e. public and civil servants received massive increases in their salaries and perks. As a result of these increases, we were supposed to see greater productivity and increased flexibility in these sectors. This hasnt happened enough. There are exceptions though. The Revenue Commissions are fantastic.

The Civil and Public Services have become bloated and unable to meet demand due to rigid procedures. The unions are unwilling to deliver on their of the bargain. We need a public sector that is responsive to the needs of society and not held back by the demands of the unions.

At the end of the day, the couple of hundred thousand people in the civil and public service have full time permanent jobs. They have excellent remuneration in comparison to equivalents in the private sector. The choice is clear for the Government – offer them a staggered pay cut or cut the number of people in the public sector. Dont cave in. Try your best to get a deal but the fat cats in the unions cannot be allowed to hold the country to ransom.

I’ll leave you with a quote which I think sums up socialism and my position. It was made by former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill in 1908. He said “Liberalism is not Socialism, and never will be. There is a great gulf fixed. It is not a gulf of method, it is a gulf of principle. Socialism seeks to pull down wealth. Liberalism seeks to raise up poverty. Socialism would kill enterprise; Liberalism would rescue enterprise from the trammels of privilege and preference. Socialism exalts the rule; Liberalism exalts the man. Socialism attacks capital, Liberalism attacks monopoly.”

Winston Churchill’s fight on the beaches speech might have stirred the hearts and minds of the people to whom it was addressed, but it failed to impress a computer marker.

David Wright, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA), an umbrella body for exam boards and other organisations, said that Churchill’s speeches to the nation in 1940 had not impressed the computer. It criticised his repetition of the words “upon” and “our” and did not identify “broad, sunlit uplands” as a metaphor.

The computer didn’t think much of the prose of Ernest Hemingway or William Golding either.

The idea that a computer could mark an English essay doesn’t altogether thrill me. But its assessment of Churchill’s speech and the other writers’ work makes me feel much better about the arguments I have with the grammar checker on my PC.

Savaş (İkinci Dünya Savaşı) sonrası ortaya çıkan ‘her an savaş olabilir’ durumunun teyakkuze geçirdiği taraflar tam 45 yıl boyunca perde arkasında büyük bir mücadele yürüttü.

AVRUPA PARLAMENTOSUNUN GLADYO KARARI

Rather detailed for a memory. Over a twenty-year period there is no way that he’d recall every detail of his graduation, especially the events he never witnessed. Anyway, Kristofferson is on the train, leaning back with a hat over his face, presumably because it helps him see through time. On top of the train, a whole lot of people are sitting calmly. Black smoke is puffing from the engine and… my god; they’re not fuelling the train with people are they? Shovelling poor passengers into the burner! Of course! That would explain why the smoke is black rather than white, which it would have been ordinarily at that time as the steam engines in the west used wood – not coal. Goodness, gracious! Get off the train! They’re gonna burn you alive so Kris Kristofferson can get to wherever it is he’s going! Jump! Run!

The writer Rudyard Kipling was once on its rolls; the former British prime minister Winston Churchill served as its war correspondent.

Now, The Pioneer, New Delhi, has announced its best editor who wasn’t: Eric Arthur Blair

In a front-page story, the right-wing paper reports that the left-wing novelist and political thinker (born in Motihari, Bihar) received a letter from The Pioneer offering him a job as editor.

And on February 12, 1938, Blair wrote to the India Office in London:

“My object in going to India is, apart from the work on The Pioneer, to try and get a clearer idea of political and social conditions in India than I have at present. I shall no doubt write some book on the sub-continent and if I can arrange it, I shall probably contribute occasional articles (to English periodicals).

“ps: I should have said that I usually write under the name of ‘George Orwell‘.”

The History Channel will air a program this evening titled “WWII in HD”. Rare footage, and personal accounts, will trace the stories of 12 soldiers throughout the course of the war. The program will be a 10-part series, airing from Sunday-Thursday. Given the fact that Veterans Day was just celebrated in America on Nov. 11th, and Armistice Day was celebrated all around the world (which technically commemorates the end of hostilities in WWI) it seems just as good a time as any to remember the sacrifices the Greatest Generation made for the sake of humanity during WWII.

Make no mistake, the Nazi war machine was the most formidable fighting force the world had ever seen. It took what would become two world superpowers (i.e. USA and USSR) and two well-established global empires (i.e. Britain and France) to defeat Hitler’s mechanized hordes and liberate virtually the whole of Europe from his iron rule. Hitler annexed the largest land empire ever seen in Europe, in the shortest amount of time. He conquered more land than Charlemagne, more than Napoleon, more than the Caesar’s, etc… and could have annexed even more had he not been such a self-destructive, hot-headed, stubborn, psychopathic, megalomaniac, prone to folly and blunder. Borders that had stood for centuries were smashed thru with ease, and countless age-old armies were completely annihilated in the course of weeks and months. Truth be told, the Nazi victories in Europe were some of the most remarkable victories in military history. To give you an idea, in about a month the whole of the Polish army was obliterated; 66,000 dead, 133,700 wounded, and 694,000 captured. In one month and 15 days, the French army, thought by many at the time to be the most powerful army in the world, was altogether wiped out; 360,000 dead and wounded, and 1.9 million captured. In 18 days of German Blitzkrieg, the Belgian army ceased to exist; 222,443 casualties, and 200,000+ captured. Over the course of roughly 6 months, 802,191 Soviets were killed, 3 million were wounded, and another 3.3 million were captured during Operation Barbarossa (translation: Operation Redbeard, so named for the charismatic Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who had fought many Crusades against the Slavic and Baltic peoples). These jaw-dropping numbers were only the results of single battles and offensives. In total, about 3.5% – 4% of the world’s population at the time was killed in the war that Hitler had started (62 mil – 78 mil), and the light of European Jewry was almost completely extinguished in the Holocaust. Victory was by no means a guarantee for the Allies. There were countless instances throughout the war in which world history could’ve turned on a dime (instances I will discuss in detail in later posts).

It may be a decades-old, silly-sounding cliché, but if it wasn’t for the Allied Forces who stormed the bloody beaches of Normandy, and snatched victory from defeat in the bombed out ruins of Stalingrad, we all would be speaking German right now, quite literally. The younger generations casually blow this saying off, as if it is an exaggeration, but the possibility was very real. In the post-war world, English, the language of the Western victors (i.e. USA and the UK), became the formal and informal language of the world. Everything from global trade to air traffic control is conducted in English, and had Germany emerged from WWII as the dominant Western power, there is no doubt international treaties would be dotted with umlauts and oil would be traded in Reichsmarks, rather than American dollars.

To give you an idea of the kind of enemy America faced, let’s take a look at the absolutely stunning casualty numbers. During America’s first major offensive against Germany in the previous war, WWI (i.e. the Battle of Argonne Forest), America suffered 117,000 casualties, in a little over two weeks worth of fighting. To put this into context, America only lost 172 men during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, in roughly the same amount of time fighting. The German army was very well trained, equipped, disciplined, and technologically advanced, and could match, and even outmatch Anglo-American ingenuity and innovation in many aspects of warfare. Comparing Middle-Eastern despots, like Saddam Hussein, to Hitler doesn’t pay the respects due to the millions of men, women, and children who gave their lives to defeat him. Fighting Hitler, and Nazi Germany, was essentially like fighting an aggressive, ruthless, and sadistic version of ourselves; an industrialized, 1st world death machine, armed to the teeth, steeped in warrior culture, and hell bent on domination and dominion. On D-Day alone (i.e. a single day) the United States lost exponentially more men (2,499) than we’ve lost in the entire Afghan War over the course of 8 years (916). The Germans killed over 26 million Soviet citizens, military and civilian, throughout the course of the war on the Eastern Front. The USSR lost more men in WWII than America has lost in battle throughout all of the wars she’s ever fought, collectively, which includes both WWII and Civil War fatalities; soldier and civilian. Keep in mind, I am not trying to minimize the sacrifices of our current veterans serving overseas in any way. I am only using them as an example to embellish the achievements of the Greatest Generation and contrast the sheer, mind-boggling size of the sacrifice they made. Losing 2,499 Americans over the course of a day (8 hrs or so) is incomprehensible to most Americans today, yet that was the cost of establishing a single beachhead in France; a mere fraction of the cost it would take to break the Nazi stranglehold over Europe and loosen Japan’s imperial grip over Asia.

Defeating Hitler cost the world a massive loss of life, unparalleled in world history, yet that was only one of the wars going on at the time. On the other side of the globe, the Allied Forces were embroiled in a vicious war against Hitler’s Axis allies in Asia, Imperial Japan. Imperial Japan was an advanced, militaristic, industrialized nation, much like Germany, that had built up a massive armed force in the years leading up to the war. The Imperial Fleet alone rivaled that of the legendary British Royal Navy, and the Japanese air force was just as advanced, if not more so, than any air force in the world, dominating the skies of Asia virtually unchallenged. Like Nazi Germany, Japan’s ground forces were known to be exceedingly brutal in their pursuit of conquest, and were seemingly just as fanatical in their cause as the Nazis were, routinely fighting to the last man, taking no prisoners, and launching suicidal attacks when all else had failed. A warrior culture had fomented in Japan for ages, and old traditions were hard to break on the isolated island country. Plus, one must keep in mind that fighting an archipelago empire such as Japan was all the more costly because it required multiple d-day landings on tiny island beaches where all of the defending forces were concentrated. Although the battle lasted for a little over six months, 7,100 Allied soldiers were lost on Guadalcanal, 6,821 on Iwo Jima in about a month, and 2,949 were lost on Saipan in about 3 weeks… and that’s just to name of few of the horrific battles in the Pacific. To avoid Operation Downfall (i.e. the Invasion of Japan), which would’ve required multiple d-day landings on multiple fronts, and islands, against a die-hard, desperate enemy fighting to protect their homes, families and honor, undoubtedly costing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of American lives, America became the first, and only country to ever drop an atomic bomb on another country. As ungodly as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were, they were not anywhere near as costly as the fire-bombing of Tokyo. It is uncertain how many people were killed in the bombings of Tokyo but the city was one of the most densely populated in the world and was largely built of flammable wooden materials. Some estimates have placed the death toll as high as 1.5 million, whereas others have placed it as low as 150,000, but the latter number is highly unlikely given the fact that over 100,000 people were reportedly killed during the raid conducted on the night of March 9th-10th, 1945 alone. In total, over 50% of the city was destroyed, and keep in mind Tokyo was only one of the many cities Allied bombers were targeting in the country. In truth, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which coerced Imperial Japan to lay down her arms, ultimately saved lives… which goes quite a ways to demonstrate the unmitigated madness and horror that had gripped the world. When a-bombs are saving more lives than they are taking, it is clear that humanity has suffered a cataclysm of unrivaled proportions.

When commemorating the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation, remember that the men who fought the Axis Powers had no idea they were going to win the war when they left their homes and families to set out to fight the dark forces of tyranny. Hitler had controlled Europe for 4 long years when the Soviets defeated the Blitzkrieg at Stalingrad, and the Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy, and before either of those milestones took place, and even for some time after they did, Hitler’s dreams of a “thousand year Reich” seemed to be all but set in stone. Average Americans; teachers, doctors, lawyers, farmers, clerks, engineers, machinists, laborers, postmen, bus drivers, etc… left their simple and peaceful lives behind to combat a savage machine built of fire and steel and fueled by the blood of millions of innocent people. Grocers and retail salesmen suddenly found themselves in the hedgerows of France face-to-face with the ruthless, battle-hardened, fanatical, Waffen-SS, and accountants and stockbrokers abruptly took to the skies over the Pacific to engage the vastly more experienced and tested Japanese Zeros in dogfights. The entire country banded together to win the war. All able men were conscripted to fight, and the woman on the home front worked their jobs to keep the economy going while they were gone. Operations of entire industries were diverted to the war effort, and the civilian population was forced to ration food and other materials for the good of their fathers, sons, and brothers dying on the battlefields far from home. Total war engrossed the Western World, and our very livelihood depended on the outcome of the campaign. For some demographics, such as the Jews, Russians, Chinese, etc… their very survival as a people depended on the outcome of the war.

No matter which way you look at it, WWII was the most pivotal, and catastrophic event in human history. The debt of gratitude we owe to those who gave their lives, and bodies, for the cause is unfathomable.

“Never was so much owed by so many to so few” — Sir Winston Churchill

In later posts I shall discuss certain aspects of the war in much greater detail, but for my first entry, I’d simply like to say thank you to all of those aging vets, and their deceased brothers-in-arms, who answered the call when the world needed them the most, and saved humanity from a new Dark Age.

“Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour’”. — Sir Winston Churchill

How often do we hear on the news that somebody is throwing the book at somebody else. What I want to

How often do we hear on the news that somebody is throwing the book at somebody else. What I want to know is, which book is it these people are throwing? I have some suggestions for you:

1. A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. A Brief History of Wasted Time, more like. Feel free to throw that book anytime you like. Superstring theory, light cones and black holes have no bearing on ladies’ fashion and have no relevance in Appleton Marsh.

2. Love is the Reason for Living by Barbara Cartland. Over the years I have read every Barbara Cartland novel. She wrote them faster than I could read them and it took her death, just six weeks shy of her 99th birthday, for me to catch up. Highlights for me would include: ‘Love is an Eagle’, ‘An Archangel Called Ivan’, ‘The Hell Cat and the King’, and ‘Cupid Rides Pillion’. So what is my particular beef with ‘Love Is the Reason’? Just this; the title. It always seemed a little preachy not to mention sanctimonious. Book titles should never be so emphatic. Perhaps if I knew of a book called ‘Puffed Pastry Will Give You Wind’ then I would be recommending you throw that, but I don’t so it will have to be ‘Love is the Reason’.

3. ‘Legend?: The Autobiography’ by Bernie Slaven. Bernie who? Apparently Bernie Slaven, was a footballer who played for Middlesbrough, Port Vale, Darlington, Queen of the South, Albion Rovers and Airdrieonians. I say apparently because I’d never heard of him until I was unexpectedly hospitalised a couple of years back. Finding myself bedridden and with no reading material to alleviate the boredom, I was passed this book by the lady in the next bed. God knows how it fell into her possession , it did not come with her recommendation and I’m not sure she’d even read it herself but I snatched it eagerly from her hands. The next thing I remember was waking up… six weeks later. I had slipped into a coma. The doctors muttered medical gobbledegook about unexpected complications but there little doubt in my mind. The stultifying and overblown ‘Legend?: The Autobiography’ by Bernie Slaven was to blame. Since Bernard poses the question, let Doris Brazil answer it. Winston Churchill, we can all agree, a legend. Mahatma Gandhi, definitely a legend. Martin Luther King, a legend of course. Elvis Presley, probably a legend. Nelson Madela, without doubt, a legend. John Lennon, perhaps a legend. And Bernie Slaven…? Throw that book.

4. Lord of the Rings, strictly speaking a trilogy. Throw all three volumes, they will hurt.

You will have your own preferences (and I’d be interested to know what they are) and remember, don’t throw pots, throw books.

Whilst Brendan Gleeson was faultless as Churchill, it was a pity that the drama didn’t offer anything new about Churchill. The continuity editing did also appear lacking making it feel like a sketch show. That is me being a bit picky, but I have to say, I did enjoy it and it was a wonderful drama.

Exam-Grading Computer Fails Churchill, Hemingway

A proposal to computerize grading of Britain’s national A-level exams has come under criticism after the system issued failing grades to Ernest Hemingway, William Golding, and Winston Churchill. According to the computer, Churchill’s wartime speeches are redundant, and Hemingway’s writing was rated “less than average” for its lack of detail. British students are required to take A-level exams in order to apply to college, and the move to computerize grading has sparked concern among educators. Critics argue that the system is unable to recognize style or intent and worry that students could learn to “write to the computer.” The system has been proposed as a way to impose uniformity on testing. It is already used in the United States.

Me reí.

London, (ANI): Queen Elizabeth is reportedly furious at fascist British National Party leader Nick Griffin for “disgracing” former Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s name to boost his party’s racist image.

“The Queen thinks it is a disgrace that the name of such a courageous leader in our hour of need has been hijacked in this way,” the News of the world quoted a senior royal aide, as saying.

The Queen has also ordered all the royals to join forces with her to unite Britain against the racist party.

“She believes it is important the royal family redoubles its efforts to stem the tide of this division. It is unhealthy and not British,” the aide said.

Most people hate the taste of beer – to begin with. It is, however, a prejudice that many have been able to overcome. –

It seems only appropriate that a blog devoted to coffee and development should take Fair Trade as it

It seems only appropriate that a blog devoted to coffee and development should take Fair Trade as its point of departure. After all, it is the approach to coffee trading that has been most celebrated for its developmental impact. And Fair Trade has taken some hits the popular media and among coffee cognoscenti lately, which makes it a timely topic.

So I will spend the rest of this week weighing in on the state of Fair Trade as it appears to me from my particular perch in the coffeelands these days. Here is an advance summary in 50 words or less: paraphrasing what Winston Churchill told the House of Commons on democracy more than a half-century ago may be the best take on Fair Trade: it is the worst system, except all those others that have been tried.

It seems not so much that Fair Trade is failing to deliver benefits, but that it is failing to live up to the extraordinary expectations created by promotional campaigns that were long on good intentions but perhaps short on nuance. And too much of the discussion for my liking seems to still revolve around binary perspectives directly out of the George W. Bush School of Moral Philosophy: either you do Fair Trade or you don’t. Either you are 100 percent Fair Trade or you aren’t. These debates were an important part of the evolution of the Fair Trade firmament, but seem to me to increasingly miss the point as the sustainable trade universe expands and some of the limitations of Fair Trade’s impact become clearer to more stakeholders within the system.

If it seems I give short shrift to Fair Trade this week, it is not because I don’t believe in its developmental benefits. I do. Rather, it is because it seems redundant to spend time reviewing the principles of Fair Trade–we all know them well thanks to millions of dollars in corporate advertising and NGO advocacy spending since the advent of the coffee crisis (more on that in another post). I think this space is better devoted to engaging the growing number of people who are ready to raise the tenor of the discussion about Fair Trade in a way that appreciates its contributions, acknowledges its shortcomings, and–most importantly–seeks to build on its achievements. There have always been people who trash Fair Trade from an ideological perspective, but what seems different now is that lots of people on the inside of the Fair Trade movement who appreciate what Fair Trade has achieved who seem to be rethinking their engagement with Fair Trade–not in ways that would trash it, but in ways that might improve on it and deliver on the promise that brought them to Fair Trade in the first place.
