As we celebrate the season of gluttony, Winston decides to dispense with the silverware and push his face straight into his Thanksgiving feast.  Don’t tell me you haven’t considered doing this yourself at least once.

Pay no attention to the background or the blurriness. Winston is in motion throughout a lot of this and so he was hard to “capture”. Also, it was not important that this be anything other than a chance to see how his body is in space and that he plays to the camera and most importantly that the story is there and hopefully clear.

Voor ons gaat hij morgen in premiere, maar de sterren van Nederland mochten de film

vorige week al aanschouwen. Lovende reacties waren het toen ze er weer uit kwamen. Ik hoop het.

Ik hoop dat de film net zo mooi is als het boek en dat is een hele moeilijke taak, omdat je in boeken

veel meer gevoel kan leggen. Daarom wou ook geen enkele regisseur de taak op zich nemen. Petje af voor Reinout

dat hij het wel durfde, maar dat vind ik geen reden dat hij ook zowat de ster van de film is.

Als een andere regisseur de taak op zich had genomen, een iets minder bekend persoon, dat werd er ook

niet zo heisa over gemaakt. Maar misschien heeft hij wel fantastich werk afgeleverd en hoor je mij naar

de film niet meer klagen. In ieder geval was heel Nederland zowat uitgelopen om de film te komen bekijken!

The only problem is that he seems to have lost his mania. In the 7 weeks that he spent at my in-laws he has become an old man. He’s got a nice case of what we think might be arthritis. He sleeps the entire day and does what we say exactly when we tell him to do it.

He hasn’t run into any walls while he has been home.

He hasn’t eaten any freshly made food off the kitchen counter.

I’ve only found him on the couch once and honestly… I would have tried to pull a fast one while my owners were trying to subdue their screaming baby.

He has been extremely calm around Clare.

There is the hunger strike, which he started the minute he walked in the door. Won’t eat the food we give him. His stomach was growling so loud today that I literally thought it was the baby crying in her crib…seriously. I put my ear up to the monitor to listen and then to his stomach…definitely his stomach.

He does the hunger strike thing every time he comes back from the grandparents. We don’t get it. He must think he is Ghandi. It’s too bad that he doesn’t have a nation to free from the bondage of colonialist occupation. I’m thinking of shaving his head and wrapping him in a crisp white toga.

Then again it could be the fact that my in-laws treat him to canned dog food….so tender and meaty and delicious.

I must say my fears of having a 103 pound unpredictable dog around my infant have been significantly lessened and I have to say that having him around has made me realize how much…

missed

him.

Games that are spawned from movies nearly always suck balls. With the exception of Goldeneye, Lego Indiana Jones / Batman / Star Wars, The Godfather, Hannah Montana Sing IT and The Seventh Seal : Magical Journey RPG. Ok, those last two don’t count. I made the Seal one up, could you tell? But no, they more often than not suck. And also reek of bad graphics, poor gameplay, woeful visuals and a general air of “let’s squeeze this cash cow until her udders explode, and I can pay to hide my several illegitmate children.”

Ghostbusters The Game was announced some time ago. I was excited from the get go, as I am a huge fan of the films, tv series and even the books that accompanied the TV series. But on the other hand, I was apprehensive. It had a lot to live up to. Those fears were alleviated when I found out that Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd were to pen the script for the game, and all the actors were to reprise their roles within the game.

The game plays out from the persepctive of a new recruit to the Ghostbusters family. (That’s you). You get thrown in to the deep end straight away. The first mission is at the Sedgewick Hotel, where you have to recapture that pesky, but strangely endearing “spud” of ectoplasm, Slimer. Using the proton pack for the first time with the Wiimote, and then throwing a trap onto the ground gave me a giddy thrill. And the subsequent opening with the signature theme tune only further cemented the sheer joy you feel when playing this game.

All the familiar characters are here. There’s even a few clever nods to both films. A picture of Gozer lies dormant in the museum level. The script and actors are top notch. Some choice lines being Venkman’s, “No, I’m not going after the little spud. I’ve seen this one before,. I know how it ends. You go for it, rookie.” My personal favourite is a toss up between Egon’s explanation of where he gets the time to work out all the new equipment for the Busters. “I have devised a nice routine, whereby I sleep for fourteen minutes a day. Naturally, this leaves me a lot of time to work on equipment.” And my second favourite is Winston, upon entering the Confederate Southern Texas wing of the museum. “Of all the rooms in the museum, this one was not top of my list.”

Gripewise, I only have two. The length of the game is not terribly huge. If you bashed away for six hours solid, you’d complete the game. And there is no online play available. Not a huge problem for me, but the option would have been nice.

Overall, I would highly recommend the game. On the Wii, mind. I’ve seen screenshots and videos of the X Box and PS versions. They look somewhat clinical and cold, the cartoon approach on the Wii reimburses that sense of fun that is associated with The Ghostbusters. I laughed, I zapped some ghosts, I was a ghostbuster for a week, and haven’t had this much fun playing a game since I discovered the chainsaw in Scarface : The World Is Yours.

It’s a chilling moment when the light goes out in someone’s eyes. A once-radiant child hardens from abuse. A woman’s heart shrinks after her husband’s abandonment.

The person looks the same, maybe acts the same. But something is gone, and what’s lost is irretrievable. It’s like when a person dies: in a heartbeat, the soul vanishes.

I witnessed this alteration recently when I visited my goddaughter, a radiant girl. Her mom, a hardcore progressive, has started exposing her to the darkest elements of the left. And the last time I looked in the girl’s eyes, the light had gone out. Disappeared. Just like that.

I see this phenomenon every day: a light dimming. The friendly shopkeeper snaps at me. My cheerful neighbor seems flattened.

And you hear it in the news: people acting strangely, going off the deep end. The most bizarre behavior becoming the new normal.

A thug bites off a finger. Sarah Palin’s church is torched. Bullies intimidate voters.

Last week, an esteemed Columbia University black architecture professor punched a white female coworker in the eye for not doing more about white privilege.

He has no history of violence. So why now?

Why now? This may be the most important question of our time. Why are some people reaching the boiling point? Why do many others look vacant, like an Invasion of the Body Snatchers? The shootings at military bases, from Little Rock to Fort Hood — why now?

It’s Obama, of course.

Liberals will excoriate me for writing this. They’ll insist that bad behavior is not Obama’s fault. He’s a man of peace.

But study the phenomenon of cults, and the dynamics are always the same. The leader can incite violence without ever getting his hands dirty. Obama is controlling the marionette of the masses.

If Obamamania is a cult, then Obama is the cult leader. Cult leaders routinely pull the strings of their followers. The most extreme example is Charles Manson. He rots in prison for murders he never committed. He didn’t have to do the dirty work. His brainwashed charges did his bidding.

I’m not saying Obama is a Charles Manson. There are varying degrees of manipulation, from using sexy blondes to entice men to buy cars all the way to hypnotizing them to drink poisoned Kool Aid. But there’s a common denominator in all mind control: manipulating people through mind games.

As soon as Obama came on the scene, the programming began. His face was plastered everywhere like Mao. In his speeches, Obama lulled audiences with a melodious voice and feel-good phrases repeated over and over. And he began inciting people with his charming smile.

First, the vultures starting swooping down on Hillary. Obama chose not to call off the dogs.

Then thugs invaded caucuses. Again, silence.

Which led to vicious misogyny against Sarah Palin and threats on her life. From Obama: not a peep.

We even saw armed thugs at polling places. Ignored and not prosecuted by Obama’s Attorney General.

The moment Obama became president, he upped the signals. At the swearing in, the entire family eerily chose to wear black and red, colors associated with communism and black nationalism. Obama’s first radio address was broadcast in the Arab world.

Obama returned Britain’s gift of a Winston Churchill statue while embracing dictators. He gave a white police officer a dressing down for doing his job, in effect calling him a racist.

Obama’s greatest magic trick? Brainwashing the masses to believe that racism is a greater danger than radical Islam, and that Obama himself is in constant peril.

Opposing health care means you oppose Obama. Oppose Obama and you’re part of a vast right-wing racist conspiracy.

Thus, more and more people are finding themselves on the receiving end of a fist, figurative or literal. After the White House released a directive for his followers to strike back hard, a frail, diabetic black man at a Town Hall was beaten up.

Even women can get slugged in the face. Obama signaled during the primary that women were fair game.

Obama and the Left are making sure that there ia an increasing number of persuadable people. By displacing workers, panicking business owners with Draconian laws, and whipping up rage and paranoia, they amass more lackeys.

The American Hard Left knows how to create a cult because it is a cult, one with a violent history. The Black Panthers, Symbionese Liberation Army, Weathermen, Black Muslims — all nefarious cults.

Members of the Weathermen, for instance, had their spirits broken through forced wickedness, such as animal abuse. Patty Hearst morphed into bank robber Tania after weeks of isolation, rape, and beatings by the SLA. Huey P. Newton sent his Black Panthers to the hospital or to the grave if they didn’t practice total obedience.

So what’s the end game here?

The first goal is power. The Left has an insatiable need to control every aspect of our lives.

But there’s a deeper reason, one much more insidious.

The Left wants to tear Americans down. Just as the Weatherman did to those naïve lost kids, they want to break our spirits. This goal of degradation is more crucial than their one-world government.

The progressives want to turn us into them, to make us feel as deprived and depraved and deadened. It’s the only way that they can silence the roar of shame and self-loathing.

What they don’t understand is this: it’s not going to happen. There are too many of us who won’t be hypnotized.

We can see right through them. We know who they are: the most piteous of human beings, and the most dangerous. Men without a country, orphans far from home. The forsaken and disowned.

They’re “hungry ghosts,” to use a Tibetan phrase: tormented beings who are starving to death from their inner nothingness.

Mother Teresa was once asked how she coped with serving the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. She responded that what she saw in the cities of the United States was much more disturbing, because it was a “poverty of the spirit.”

Poverty of the spirit. No truer words can be spoken of the progressive Left.

My farrier came out to trim the horses feet.  In an effort to meet budget, we’ve stretched the time between trims.  Our stretching ended up going 12 weeks (they do grow less in the winter)- he missed our appointment and had to reschedule.  The farrier was pleasantly surprised that everybody’s feet looked pretty good.  They were long, but Tiny was the only one who was getting some chips- and they weren’t any worse than “stomping at flies during the summer chips.”  Winston’s feet were amazing… still nice and round with a good hard wall.  I noticed that Wilson’s feet were exactly the same.  I ended up in a discussion with Wayne over how similar the two are.  The two would make a stunning pair in harness or for a pair’s class.  Their face markings, conformation, and movement is very similar!  Willow’s only obvious contribution to the gene pool is Wilson’s long thick mane and tail.

Later, I was thinking about how people always compare children to their parents.  “You have your father’s nose.”  “Your mother’s chin.” etc.

I thought back to what my Grandfather Brown was known for saying when comparison conversations came up… “He’d say that I looked just like Mary Kate.”  He liked that everybody was an individual and unique.

I looked at Nathaniel and thought of my Grandfather’s words and thought of Nathaniel.  Honestly, I’m much better at looking at horses and telling what attributes they got from their sire and dam than I am with humans.  However, I’ve seen John’s toddler pics.  And even my ignorant eye can spot the similarities.  Take out the 70’s decor and update the photo quality and the two could probably pass for each other.  Nathaniel has John’s eyes- that is unmistakable.

Somebody said to me, that I can tell Nathaniel that he’s looking at the world though his father’s eyes.  I do hope that Nathaniel turns out to be “just like Daddy” in many ways- the world will be a better place if that is the case…

The Do, un groupe que l’on doit découvrir tout de suite.

Un groupe franco-finlandais dont le premier album est sorti en janvier 2008 et dont les mélodies Folk/Rock et Indie/Rock sont à jour.

Le groupe sait fait connaître à grande échelle par la pub des cahiers Oxford en décembre 2008. Il y a donc déjà un an que le groupe vend des albums et que leur son se fait entendre ici en Amérique, mais il n’y a pourtant pas assez de gens qui connaissent le groupe et c’est pour cela que j’en parle cette semaine.

Selon Wiki : «The Dø est un groupe de musique pop formé par le duo Olivia Bouyssou Merilahti (chanteuse franco-finlandaise) et Dan Levy (musicien et compositeur de musique de film).

Le nom du groupe est formé des initiales des prénoms de ses deux membres, mais renvoie aussi à la note do. Il est écrit avec un o barré et parfois (comme sur la pochette de leur album, sur leurs tee-shirts etc.) avec une note de musique, une noire, en guise de « D ». Le o barré peut laisser penser aussi à l’origine de la chanteuse, mais à tort, car cette lettre n’existe pas en finnois.»

Les chansons ne sont pas surchargées de bruits, de distorsions ou de textures, elles sont très bien construites et efficaces. Elles sont à la fois paisibles et sereines, mais assez rock pour ne pas être pop (au sens de la pop américaine). Un bon rock plaisant.

The Do s’écoute aussi bien que Regina Spektor (ses chansons plus accessible ou pop) et que Charlie Winston (mentionné dans l‘article sur les groupes pour cet automne).

Artiste à connaître immédiatement. Les show sont absolument extraordinaires! On voit que ce sont de véritables artistes et musiciens. Ils savent suivre la foule et manipuler leurs chansons afin de donner aux spectateurs quelque chose de nouveau.

On aime énormément sur scène et dans les écouteurs!

Top 5 Musique d’automne :

Une liste de 5 artistes qui réchaufferont les maison cet automne. Je ne propose rien de nécessairement nouveau, mais des artiste prometteurs à découvrir.

1-  Angus & Julia Stone / A Book Like This.

Un frère et une soeur d’Australie (Newport) nous proposent une poésie musicale simplifiée et très efficace. Le duo chante en harmonie sur des mélodies épurées de guitare et de percussions qui ne peuvent nous laisser indifférents. Entre l’harmonica et le piano s’installe une certaine dualité rassurante qui rappelle celle de l’automne :vie et mort. Ce sont les voix différentes qui se marient à merveille en rappelant notre côté déchiré/fragile et rassurant/stable. A Book Like This est leur seul album complet en magasin, mais ils travaillent sur un album qui sortirait l’an prochain.
Excellent, à se procurer absolument.

2-  Charlie Winston.

Avec ses aires pop-rock/blues/folk, Charlie Winston au charme ” so british” a mis sur pied un second album en début d’année que l’on se doit d’écouter. Vous adorerez l’album Hobo ainsi que le clip de “Like a Hobo” : titre accrocheur à la mélodie sifflé qui séduit. Alors que son premier album sort sur le label Real World de Peter Gabriel, le second sort sous le drapeau français au label Atmosphériques. Rien d’autre à dire qu’il faut absolument écouter et partager cet album : Hobo de C.W..

Achetez-le, c’est une valeur sûre!

3-  Chasing Bright Lights.

Un gros coup de coeur pour le groupe folk/acoustique/pop Chasing Bright Lights. Une voix particulaire avec un petit “twang” qui rappel Bob Dylan. Sa guitare est simple, parfois rock, parfois blues, mais on ne s’en lasse jamais. J-D LeBlanc nous propose un pop folk accompagné d’un son britannique et d’une ambiance montréalaise qui est parfaite pour les excursions hors de la ville. Son deuxième album auto-produit, Stones & Feathers (photo ci-contre), sur lequel on entend la voix soul extraordinaire d’Émilie Pompa, est sortit cet été.  On peut l’entendre jouer un peu partout à Montréal, il commence à se faire connaître et il mérite l’attention que lui porte la scène montréalaise cet automne/hiver.

Définitivement un artiste à voir sur scène.

4-  Husky Rescue.

Le groupe finlandais Husky Rescue propose une musique folk/rock/ambiance (cinematic pop) qui parle de tout et de rien sans but précis. À travers la nostalgie et le sentiment d’être perdu, on semble chercher un brin d’espoir ou de lumière. Le dernier album (Ghost is Not Real) est très bien réalisé, complet et nous transporte au travers l’automne vers la clarté de l’hiver.  Il est formé de cinq membres, dont la chanteuse Reeta Vestman qui se produit aussi seul. Sa voix est douce, assurée, mais peut très bien être nouveau genre (Ting tings, Metric).

Un album à découvrir.

5-  Elsiane.

Elsiane est la réalisation de la compositeur/interprète Elsieanne Caplette et du drummer Stephano Sotto. Elsieanne est originaire du Pérou et est à Montréal depuis un bon moment déjà. Sa musique est un mix très intéressant d’électronique, de mélodie vocale et de classique. Les aires chantées sont davantage des mélodies tant que la voix est utilisée comme instrument. Elle affirme composer ses chansons à partir d’une mélodie sur laquelle se rajoutent des paroles. Loin de la musique d’ambiance facile que l’on entend dans les cafés, l’album Hybrid s’écoute très bien et recèle quelque chose de frais, qui n’a pas été fait. Ce n’est pas déjà fait, mais ce n’est pas nouveau : c’est excellent et satisfaisant.
À écouter autour du feu ou en mangeant.

I need to come to terms that I feel, react and act very differently towards a girl I want and towards a girl I want to fuck. The former being, at once, more seldom and more natural. When I want a girl, a specific girl, I do not think. My instincts take over allowing me to be, at once more natural and, whilst inhibited, truer to my self and thus to her. One the other hand, when I target a girl that I want for the sake of having her, conquering her, fucking her, however you may label it, I become English Winston. A Winston that is at once much more confident, as I know I am smart, charming and good looking, yet insecure. With English Winston everything is superficial. I become an extra-skeletal version of my self. I pump out everything that is obviously good about me and take little notice of the much deeper currents that attempt to sway me, against my will power but with my will. English Winston is usually rejected, but neither me nor my English alter ego take notice or heed. As I said, English Winston is only skin deep, thus any rejection or injury results in a mere flesh wound. All the while, I am comfortably confined within this husk and thus well protected from any real life experience that might, heaven forbid, result in anything beyond the comfortable numbness of isolation. Thus, I go out, pick up trophies that would best suit my arsenal of manly anecdotes of conquest and give her 5 minutes of my time. She is not worth more than that, however I may spend massively in material means to gain her. She is but an object desired above others, and thus no objects will be spared in her procurement. Nevertheless, my time is more valuable than her. At least I still control my time, per session. No single attempt will continue beyond, roughly, five minutes without any significant gain of ground. If she does not respond or rejects my façade, I swiftly move one to the next best trophy in the room without missing a heart beat, which is not part of the chase anyway. Maybe I do not have the control I think I do, perhaps it is but my own misled self-conviction camouflaging my impatience. Still, solace can be taken in the mere existence of impatience. At least, instinctively, I know I am going against my own grain. When I try, I do not even want to succeed at times, I just want to try. Otherwise my night will be wasted hanging out with my best friends. Apparently, somewhere along the way I decided they are not worth my time. Obviously, I know this is not true. I do love my friends but my impatience suggests that there is something in me that they cannot fill, but that has been discussed thoroughly. When I do succeed I usually get bored, annoyed or tired very shortly and I just want to be left to my own internal thoughts. This, probably beautiful and intelligent girl, whom I enticed with false insinuated promises of romantic and sexual prospects is now irrelevant and unwanted. I ask her to come and then I am too polite and scared to tell her to go away, to admit to her that whilst I genuinely do think she is attractive, and do not dismiss the possibility that she is an incredible human being, I used her acceptance as mere self validation. So, we babble on quickly, attempting by force to ignore the obvious distance. We scream at each other petty small-talk above the irritating music. We move to the irritating music to buy us time as we try to pry our minds for the next topic that might either bring us closer or this night closer to a close. Then , when we have little more to talk about, we kiss. The moment is one of silence provoked merely by a fail for words, sourced from lack of mutual interest rather than the desired contrary. The kiss is passionate to make up for the lack of chemistry. Maybe if I kiss you hard enough we will cause enough friction to give birth to a spark. Now, two things might occur. Both of these will follow my next question; does she want to come back to my place. I know what I want. I want her to make an excuse and let me go home, or even back to my friends whose company is again desirable by comparison. Or she can agree, leading us both to a frustrating night. The night might be enjoyable. However, I will be too engrossed in my own thoughts of humiliation to enjoy the moment and thus bringing about the inevitably self fulfilling humiliation.

Authorities in Ohio say Winston was shot and killed Wednesday after he barged into a hotel room with a gun demanding money. There were six people in the room and they’d left the door open to the first-floor room so the adults in the room could stay within earshot of two girls in the room next door.

One of the people in the room, a 70-year-old great-grandmother, reached into her purse on the floor, pulled out a .357-caliber Magnum pistol and shot Winston once in the chest, the newspaper reported.

Winston stumbled to the parking lot, where he was later pronounced dead.

Today I found out that Winston, my 12 year old English bulldog, has to have some pretty serious eye surgery.  Bulldogs and anesthesia aren’t always the best of friends, but he is seeing the best eye vet in Los Angeles and I expect only the best outcome.  Also, befitting a dog of his age living in Hollywood, he will have a little eye lift during the surgery!  I have had Winston since he was 10 weeks when I was living in Dallas and he is a Texan – Loud and Proud – and my pride and joy.  So to cheer him up… okay… so to cheer me up, I made him some special treats.  And since it’s so close to Halloween, I used 1 1/2-inch pumpkin and ghost cutters!

Carrot-Almond Doggie Biscuits

Makes dozens

6 cups organic whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
2 Tablespoons nutritional yeast
2 Tablespoons dried parsley
1/2 cup organic almond butter
3 carrots, finely chopped in a food processor
1 1/2 cups less sodium organic vegetable or chicken broth
1 egg, lightly beaten

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Blend together the flour, wheat germ, nutritional yeast, and parsley in a large mixing bowl (preferably for a standing mixer).  Add the remaining ingredients and mix using the dough hook attachment until blended.  Keep kneading dough for another 3 to 5 minutes.  (Note: if you do not have a standing mixer, blend ingredients together to form a stiff dough. Transfer to floured surface and knead for 5 minutes).

Divide dough into two balls.  Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4- to 1/2-inches thick depending on the size of you cutter and/or dog.  If dough shrinks back too much while rolling, cover with a clean dish towel and let rest 10 minutes. Cut biscuits using a dog bone cutter or a cleaver seasonal cutter and transfer to an ungreased baking sheet.  Biscuits can be placed pretty close together as they are not going to spread.  Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Turn biscuits and continue baking for another 15 minutes.  Turn off oven and let cool completely inside the oven.  Biscuits can be stored in an air-tight container for up to 1 month or in the freezer for 6 to 8 months.
