Christmas is nearly upon us so we here at the G4A fun house thought that before we get too drunk we

Christmas is nearly upon us so we here at the G4A fun house thought that before we get too drunk we would try to help you all out with lists of 5 games on each format that we consider to be essential purchases.

Having tackled both of the other home consoles comes the turn of Sony’s late developer the PS3. Sony’s black beauty so long bereft of any decent games has started to catch up quick as the list that follows this will stand testament too. As I have stated before these are not necessarily the 5 best games on the console but rather games that gamers new to the console should give a go OR ELSE!!

1. Uncharted 2: Among Theives.

My favourite game of the year bar none, this AAA blockbuster title is an absolute stunner. Uncharted 2 stands head and shoulders above every other game released on any console this year. Again starring the very likeable every man Nathan Drake the game has you adventuring all across the globe looking for another ancient artifact. If you need to know more about the game read my review here, if not all you need to know is this game is a must buy. With the best Graphics seen on any console this generation and silky smooth gameplay to match, plus a very good online multiplayer mode this is definitely in with a big shout for game of the year not just here on G4A but everywhere. Also you should consider hunting down the first Uncharted although not as good as the follow-up it is still a very good game.

2. Metal Gear Solid 4.

Hideo Kojima’s fantastic stealth em’ up was one of the first exclusives on the PS3 to show what the machine was truly capable of. As has always been the case with the Metal Gear Solid series the graphics are stunning, the story completely baffling and the gameplay sublime. Starring series stalwart Solid Snake facing off against all the usual bonkers foes such as Mantis, Ocelot, Wolf, Vamp and Liquid Snake. This is a true master class in-game design although the same cannot be said about the ridiculous dialogue and extremely long cut scenes. These however do not spoil the gameplay and obviously that is the important part. It can picked up for as little as £15.00 online so get hunting.

3. Bioshock

Although a late arrival on the PS3 Ken Levine’s Art Deco underwater FPS masterpiece is still a gaming tour de force. Everything in this game is a cut above, from the art direction to script it is a ‘how to’ list of gaming goodness. After your plane crashes into the Atlantic sea you happen upon what looks to be a simple lighthouse which in fact is the gateway to Rapture, an underwater city. Rapture was the ideological dream of Andrew Ryan a place where all the worlds leading luminaries could live together in a kind of intellectual utopia free from war and other such troubles. When you happen across it though it has completely gone to rack and ruin with dead bodies and flooded corridors at every turn. Crazed genetically mutated splicers roam the corridors looking for their next fix of ‘Adam’ the source genetic substance that allows you to alter your abilities. With a fantastically adult story (by this I mean it never once insults your intelligence),wonderful gameplay mechanics and beautiful Art Deco graphics this is a title that every gamer worth their salt should play. You will never forget defeating you first Big Daddy or the decision you make about his Little Sister, complete and utter genius. Lets just hope that Bioshock 2 lives up its predecessor but we here at G4A do have our doubts (but fingers crossed eh?).

4. Little Big Planet.

This game stars Sony’s new poster boy mascot, the game character that can be anybody! “Sackboy”. Essentially on the surface this is just a physics based 2D platformer. Scratch the surface though and it is a lot more with one of the most in-depth yet intuitive level creators ever created. With this versatile tool you can create whole new levels and base them on whatever you like and then upload them for everybody else to have a go. It’s this user-generated content that is the star of the show. The included levels themselves are none to shabby and the whole thing screams quality. The graphics and music all have a unique charm about them and a special mention must go to the Stephen Fry narrated intro. 4 players same screen multi player also make this top family fun but do not get this confused with making it easy though as some of the levels are fiendishly hard. Also Media Molecule the games designers are still adding new stuff regularly and a game of the year edition is soon to be released make this a game well worth checking out, especially as it can be picked up for around £13.00.

5. Wipeout Fury HD

One of Sony’s gaming stalwarts made a stunning return on the PS3. Always a vehicle for stunning graphics the Wipeout series is an absolute stunner on the PS3. Running in full 1080p and 60 frames a second this game is something for all graphics tarts to drool over. The gameplay is also finely honed and with a raft of play modes anti-grav racing has never been more fun. Featuring online multiplayer for the first time on a home console this is definitely the zenith of the Wipeout franchise. Starting life as a download Playstation Network title only it has recently been given the Fury sub-title (there is a Fury add-on pack for those that downloaded it) and a retail release on Blu-Ray for sub £20.o0. This is the game series that 15 long years ago reignited my dwindling passion for all things video games and the fire is burning brighter than ever.

So that is all the home consoles now covered and next week its christmas. If you have listened to us here at G4A and get your hands on the games we have listed over the course of this feature, then come the new year you will be having a whale of a time on your new console no matter which one it is. So all that’s left to say is ”Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”.

Now I’m off to get totally bladdered.

Hello again. Remember a few weeks ago when I posted that we’d been taking some ‘personal

Hello again.

Remember a few weeks ago when I posted that we’d been taking some ‘personal time off’ (Read as: We’re busy with real life) and that we’d be posting more soon?

I might have lied.

Life is still playing havoc with our time. But, with all the cool stuff happening with my gaming world, I figured I’d bite the bullet and write something about what I’ve been up to in the last few months…

Played a ton of demos. Say what you want about PSN, the demos are flowing in like no one’s business. The good: Brutal Legend is fun and very smart. Double Fine did a great job so far and it seems that this is going to be a big game for them. Jack Black is very tolerable and is really funny in his role as….himself. Looking to pick this up. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is also continuing the win streak of getting a better ninja game after the fact. Again, the demo unlocks more content with every play through, like the first demo for NGS. Making it a favorite of people that can’t buy games as often as they used to. The combat is more of the same smooth, cut your arms off, crazy crap that you should be used to by now. The boss fight towards the end of the demo is pretty crazy. I felt like buying the game after playing it a few times.

More good: picked up the first of the Fallout 3 DLC FINALLY on PS3, Broken Steel. It’s great, as you already know. The Broken Steel story is longer then I thought and at one point, got so hard, I thought I was going to throw my controller across the room. The subway fight is the worst, most frustrating sequence in a game that I’ve played in a long time. It was still worth getting to start back in to a game that really is deep and expansive. Also, finding three different flamethrowers is awesome for someone like me that seems to enjoy setting people on fire alittle too much at times.

Finally bought Trash Panic and Shatter. Both awesome, addictive games with quirky gameplay and wonderful soundtrack. Even if Trash Panic is the hardest fucking game I’ve ever played, I still love playing it. Shatter is another way for companies to get my money. Keep making Arkaniod games, guys and I’ll keep buying them. Between Shatter and Magic Ball, I should be doing an all ball returning game weekend. I love that stuff.

Speaking of stuff I love, I got into the Uncharted 2 Beta, and later the public demo/beta. Both times, I really couldn’t believe that this game was getting so much love from the gaming press and other news outlets. It’s still Uncharted. The gun play and scaling are back along with multiplayer. I mean, I came from a time, 2007 to be exact, where the thought of a PS3 game being good was something of a internet punchline. Now Uncharted 2 seems to be, many people think, the hands down, game of the year. What a difference two years can make. Looking forward to the showdown of Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2 and ODST fighting for GotY honors.

Been replaying all of my old games since money is tight and there are so many games coming in the next three to four months that I’m not going to have money for. Replaying Uncharted, Bioshock, Lumines Supernova, Zen Pinball, Fallout 3, (this time as the evil guy) and Wipeout HD is reminding me how much I love gaming. Planning on busting out some more trophies on these games, as well as Shatter and Marvel Vs Capcom 2.

In other news, I just got Diablo 2 like it’s the year 2000. Always up with the times. More on this when I get started. All you need to know is that I’ve always wanted to play this game, but never had the computer processing power to run it and with my type of gaming personality, I was afraid of the game destroying my life. But with 134 hours in Fallout 3 (not including the times that I had to start over due to being trapped somewhere or erasing my save to start over with trophies) and a embarrassing 481 hours in Oblivion, I think I’ll be ok playing a 9 years old game. More when it develops.

That’s all for now. More soon. Really this time………mabye.

J.

So Sony started making with Dynamic Themes for the PS3, and i got to admit it’s awesome. Animations moving at your XMB background

This week

Sony released 2 Dynamic Themes on the Europe PSN Store, Motorstorm (need to pay) and Wipeout (free).

Video of the Wipeout theme in action:

And the Motorstorm one:

Can’t wait for more Dynamic Themes, too bad only developers can make them. Or else we can really see some awesome themes made by users, especially Final Fantasy ones.

Equal or beat the lap time of 30.82 seconds on Anulpha Pass (Forward), Speed Lap, Venom using the Piranha. My guide for this trophy… These descriptive points I made whilst planning the perfect lap required for this trophy! Hopefully, this may also help you if you’re attempting or having difficulty with this challenge–detailing precisely how to achieve the time of 30.82 or less. It worked for me and I completed a perfect lap within 30.68.

It’s not too difficult when you really execute each requirement reasonably perfectly, but you may find completing a lap where every section is perfect, a little difficult at first. The thing that constantly messed up my perfect lap was the barrel-roll up on the overpass shortcut.

WipEout HD - Piranha Advancements

Anyways, for the setup of the challenge, set Motion Sensor:Pitch, Acceleration:10% and Air brakes:60%. For the most part, keeping the controller tilted slightly upward so the nose of the craft is continuously pointing up will help with barrel-rolls. Taping the air brakes is preferable as holding the air brakes on for longer periods will add resistance & slow the craft down. You’ll want to ideally execute a minimum 4 barrel-rolls & 2 boosts.

The perfect lap: (1) Boost into the lap just before the start line–as close as possible (I had to skip the first lap to save the boost, also–pressing L1 will recharge the boost but void the laptime). Aim to hit at least 3 turbo pads through the first left turn. (2) Use the second boost just as you land after the first bump which will then propel you airborne. (3) Execute a barrel roll, and land just before the narrow section-here, on landing a boost will activate allowing for another barrel-roll straight through the narrow tunnel. (4) On exiting the narrow tunnel, keep as tight to the left through the chicane and side shift as you make the last left turn; there is no need to air-brake or even steer through this section. (5) As you exit the chicane make a straight line for the far right side of the track-toward the very right of the jump up toward the overpass. Keep as close to the right side as you… (6) This bit is tricky, as soon as you leave the track airborne-nose up and barrel-roll up onto the overpass. (7) Travel along the overpass, nose down, until you get to the last speed-pad just after you pass throught the tunnel. (8) Side-shift to the left-down onto the track; aim to land on one of the turbo pads. (9) You’re on the home-straight! – Good luck.

Nb. You can use the Fury Piranha and you will still unlock the trophy. However, it really makes very, very little difference. If you can achieve this challenge in the Fury ship you could achieve it in the original Piranha.

I finally completed WipEout HD (and Fury) and achieved Transcendence platinum; so after experiencing

I finally completed WipEout HD (and Fury) and achieved Transcendence platinum; so after experiencing absolutely everything the game has to offer, I’m left with these feelings toward the game.

I think a game really shows it’s true potential when played on the highest difficulty setting. With, for example, Killzone 2, it remained extremely difficult but well-developed strategies stood fair game and kept its water-tight integrity intact. In contrast, Call of Duty World at War did not. Waves of grenade spamming, gung ho trigger-happy, perfect-shot, continually spawning, moronic enemies made certain that your Veteran difficulty gaming experience was the most frustrating and least enjoyable challenge possible.

Unfortunately, I feel WipEout HD is very similar to the latter. More trigger-happy, rocket spamming, mine-field laying, on-rails competitors and an inhuman higher difficulty setting, most likely alienates the majority of players, so that only the absolute die-hard & professional vets can access the entire game. And as far as I believe (and have always been under the impression is standard), video games should be accessible and enjoyable by everyone. Okay, so that is what higher difficulty settings are for (to challenge the seasoned and familiar gamers) but WipEout HD’s Easy difficulty will make many players give up after the first few games (learning curves anyone!? not here).

Pirhana racing Goteki 45 on Tech De Ra

A few things that particularly frustrated me though. Competitors seem to have an unfair advantage under certain circumstances–if behind them (especially–directly behind them!!) they most often lay mines and bombs, and if you’re in front they appear to fire mostly projectiles. Similarly, this often applies to me; when in last position, I often only pick up mines, bombs & auto-pilots! great! When I’m in first place, I often pick up quakes, missiles, plasmas. Awesome!

Like destruction derby; another thing that made the races much more uncontrollable/ unpredictable was that other ships appear to be a lot more glued to the track, they’ll barge and ram you out of the way (sometimes off track completely) whilst they remain, for the most part, unmovable and rarely yield to being nudged. Unlike a car racing game (TOCA Touring Car Championship aside), this game will not allow, in terms of time constraints and due to the break-neck speed, for you to strategically work your way closely around the other vehicles.

Many times, especially during the later Elite Phantom Class races, other racers would go absolutely berserk it would seem with sometimes, what would appear to be, a sole purpose of sending me to the sky in flames–ramming my craft even to the point of eliminating themselves in the process. It is worth mentioning that even online racing against human opponents is never as brutal as the game (how does one beat a computer after all?).

WipEout HD Elimination

Sometimes, it feels like the game is too fast for its own good. The scale of the pilots in the craft would suggest that the ships are actually really huge, and yet they travel at this seriously unrealistic speed, and sometimes the design of the tracks really doesn’t accommodate for these types of top speeds. For, example, auto-pilots engaged at the wrong moment will, on occasion, result in the craft being forced into the air and into a wall or a corner of the track (or fly completely off track altogether), forcing the craft to respawn–by which time, you’ve gone from second place to eighth place! And vehicle stats mean very little (almost nothing), especially in the Elite stages.

Pilot assist is okay and helps avoid some of these more extreme issues but on the later stages and higher AI difficulty settings, it actually slows the ship down so much with constant air-braking that it becomes almost impossible to win a race with PA on. In fact, it’s most likely more difficult to achieve a good race position with PA on than if you switch it off and scrape the sides a few times.

Controls overall are very responsive and you can rarely blame a loss of position due to poorly developed control system… except for side-shifts; they can be amazing if timed absolutely perfect but they can also end in disaster when what was intended as a subtle correction of air-braking is mis-interpreted as a desire to side-shift and slams you into the side of the track (wall). Really, there should be an option to turn this control feature off completely (like PA or any other optional extra). Or at least assign [allow them to be mapped] them to the primary/secondary shoulder buttons.

I found the SIXAXIS motion sensitivity (nose up, nose down) to be, for the most part, pointless other than for a very few specific occasions. Most outrageously, angling nose down doesn’t assist in making the craft go faster, similarly, nosing up–even to the absolute highest degree, doesn’t slow the craft down at all.

WipEout HD

Anyway, aside from a few outragous annoyances–I mostly enjoyed the entire game. I liked particularly that it wasn’t an easy challenge, haha! The presentation is perfect, and the futuristic theme is breath-taking; craft and track modelling is really beautiful. I just wish there was a story showing some characters–even more integrated with the stunning environments would be amazing.

The different modes, races, tournaments, time-trials, speed-laps, and now also the elimination, detonator, and zone battles are all fun and there a soo many variations that there are hours and hours of fun, improving times, leader board scores, etc. Zone mode!!–the joy & the visual effects are absolutely stunning and is one of my favourite events. I will be aiming to improve on my best zone score so far (Zone 76).

WipEout HD Fury Expansion was recently released on PSN for WipEout HD. We love WipEout HD, and we love Fury Expansion. With Fury you get the following:

8 new tracks

13 new ship models

3 new game modes (2 available for online play)

new trophies

re-styled front-end game menu

new and improved multiplayer functionality

The three new game modes are to us the most exciting. The three new game modes are: Eliminator (similar to WipEout Pulse on the PSP), Zone Battle, and Detonator. If you own WipEout HD, we highly recommend purchasing the Fury Expansion. If you do not own WipEout HD, now is the time to purchase it. View our gameplay videos below showing the new Gameplay Modes and a New Track.

Japan’s DDM.tv is bringing on-demand Blu-ray quality HD adult movies to the PLAYSTATION 3.

The service requires a broadband connection, an HDMI cable and, obviously, a PS3 console — the only device the service works with presently.

Before downloading the movies for a fee, users must log onto the DMM.tv Blu-ray website and can search for titles like by keywords, actress, genre, etc.

Discerning titles include the likes of Yuma Asami and the 100 Masturbaters. All hundred of them. On your PS3. In full HD. Yeah.

Fucking awesome Bullshit zieht Sony mal wieder mit zahlenden Kunden ab.

“Wie? Was?

The ad has been removed from WipEout HD and we are investigating the situation to ensure that any in-game advertising does not affect gameplay.
