Wipe-outs are always embarrassing for any windsufer especially when you’re in a competitive heat but maybe not as embarrassing as rapping with the local celidah band at the Lodge Hotel, Tiree. Being bent in half-a common occurence on Wipeout.

CNN is reporting the death of a contestant on ABC’s summer smash Wipeout.  Wipeout being one of my favorite shows, I was very sad to hear the news.  If you haven’t seen the show, it features contestants racing through foam-filled obstacle courses to win da monie$.  (Check out my earlier ravings about the show here.)

The contestant was 33-year-old Tom Sparks, and word on the street is that he had a preexisting condition, although California coroners are still examining all the possibilities.

No word on if this tragedy will impact future seasons of the show or even (gasp) cancel it.  This viewer notes that the challenges seem to have gotten more physically intense in the show’s second season which aired in the summer of 2009.  More contestants were quitting instead of finishing the courses.  Perhaps the show producers or course designers need to scale it back a bit to prevent future injuries or deaths.

I hope the show doesn’t get canceled!  It fulfills my need for some summer schadenfreude.  The shamelessness of the competitors is a refreshing breeze during the humid midwest summers.

Un concursante que fue hospitalizado después de competir en Wipeout, la versión original del ciclo que en la Argentina se llamó Hombre al agua y que emitió Canal Trece, falleció en circunstancias que aún no fueron aclaradas dos semanas después de haberse lesionado en el transcurso del programa.

Tom Sparks, de 33 años, estaba tratando de superar los primeros obstáculos del programa el pasado 19 de octubre cuando se lesionó la rodilla, según informa Endemol, la compañía que produce Wipeout para ABC.

El APS suele asociarse con acontecimientos entre los que se incluyen el derrame cerebral y el infarto, según afirma la Fundación APS de América.

Los concursantes de Wipeout deben pasar pruebas médicas previas a su participación, como afirma Endemol, pero el diagnóstico del APS requiere test de sangre especializados, por lo que no pudo detectarse.

“Damos nuestro más sentido pésame a la familia”, expresaron Endemol y ABC en una nota de prensa. “Es una trágica pérdida y todo nuestro apoyo está con ellos en estos momentos”.

There’s a regular feature in Sports Illustrated called “Signs of the Apocalypse.”  The editors include sports-related news of the weird that they feel signals the end of days.

Contestants willingly hurl their bodies through a wacky, water obstacle course while original “Talk Soup” host John Henson makes fun of them falling head-first into the drink — because they always fall.

Jeff Jensen at Entertainment Weekly said, “I think the sight of people violently smashing face-first into big rubber balls, over and over and over and over and over again, is totally hilarious.”

I disagree.

I could only stomach the show for a few minutes.  These people are totally humiliating  (and possibly paralyzing) themselves on national television.  I’m sure there’s some kind of prize if you complete the obstacle course without falling into the water, but seriously — has anyone ever done that?

Last week during filming, a 33-year old contestant suffered a stroke. (I’m not all that surprised; I almost had one just watching it.)  Guys, the poor man died.

So, ABC — take note.  This show isn’t just stupid and humiliating.  It’s dangerous.

(CNN) — The death of Tom Sparks, a 33-year-old former TV host from California who was participating as a third-season contestant on ABC’s reality show “Wipeout,” likely was caused by a pre-existing condition, but the Los Angeles County coroner’s office is still examining all possibilities.

Sparks died on November 5 of an apparent stroke that his doctors believe was triggered by a pre-existing disease that causes unnatural blood clotting, according to a statement his father released to the Idaho Mountain Express. Sparks previously had worked in radio in Idaho, according to his résumé.

An autopsy was conducted on November 8, but test results are still pending.

“There’s nothing we can confirm until we look at everything,” the coroner’s office told CNN. “We don’t want to jump to any conclusions yet.”

Sparks was survived by his wife, Kate, according to the Idaho Mountain Express. The couple would have celebrated their two-month wedding anniversary on November 6.

Big news, New Jersey residents: The Garden State will no longer be defined by “The Sopranos” and “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”

Fuggedaboutit! Thanks to The Style Network, New Jersey will no longer be known just for its abrasive personalities and big hair. Then again, maybe it will.../Credit HBO (above) and Bravo (below)

No, sirree. Instead, the little state that could will from now on be known as “Jerseylicious”… or so The Style Network hopes.

The network has given the greenlight to the *reality* show – and yes, it’s most definitely called “Jerseylicious” – which will follow both the professional and personal lives of six hair stylists. The action, according to New Jersey Newsroom, will take place at The Gatsby Salon in Somerset County’s Green Brook (which also happens to be the home of “Real Housewife of New Jersey” Teresa Giudice’s favorite furniture store, Unique Furniture).

“Our viewers are in for a wild ride when they enter this hairspray mayhem,” Salaam Coleman Smith, president of The Style Network, said in a statement obtained by New Jersey Newsroom. “We love that this series takes a fun look at the always entertaining personal lives and real-life drama of this outrageous staff while also capturing the fabulous makeovers and ‘Jerseylicious’ styles at the salon. It’s a perfect combination for Style’s young female audience.”

The salon, located on Route 22, is run by Gayle and Christy, a mother/daughter team. After two marriages, Gayle is back on the dating scene, and Christy is working hard at building up her stake in the business, says the article. Other stylists profiled on the show include Gigi, who is described as a “Bridezilla”-wannabe, and Anthony, the lone male who is trying to provide for his family.

The show, which is set to debut in the spring, will also be filming in other Central New Jersey locales. It is produced by Endemol USA, which also produces “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” “Deal or No Deal,” Big Brother” and “Wipeout.”

“The mid-’60s was a remarkably dynamic time in pop music, so it’s no surprise that Rhino Records’ latest edition of the Nuggets series, this one focusing on L.A., has a breathtaking range of recordings from the city’s heavy hitters.

One of those lesser known acts, The Impacts includes my longtime friend and sometime collaborator, Merrell Fankhauser, co-writer of one the biggest surfing instrumentals of all-time, “WIPEOUT.” Just yesterday, New Media Joe (Klein), interviewed Merrell for Kent Kotals’ Forgotten Hits special instrumental issue, which will appear on Monday.

Well, it’s Saturday and we could all use a break, maybe dream of catching a big breaker and hanging ten.  Okay, it’s all in my head.  But I do have fond memories of how much grab there was in those instrumental surf classics from the 60’s.  When it came on, you couldn’t help but listen.

We had a copy of the Surfaris’ single , Wipeout , that had the kitschy Surfer Joe on the flipside.  I must’ve heard both sides of that single a thousand times, if not more.  Every listen was like a sonic sugar rush and I still smile when I hear either song.

For this Saturday, I am showing a version of Wipeout from the seminal instrumental surf band, the Ventures.  It’s a really high quality version from a film when they toured Japan in the 60’s.

i worked a lot this week.  i worked hard. i am exhausted. back to school night and general hustling to make things happen in LA kicked my bootay.  i have very few plans this weekend beyond catching up on  my dvr and getting ready to see my friend nikki james perform at musical mondays this coming week.  i’m so grateful she’s in LA for another month because i’ve gotten to spend a lot of time with her!

but my friend sara, had an even crazier week it sounds like.  i’m so behind on catching up on friends’ lives this week that i just finally got to see this.  miley cyrus has the flu or strep throat or something and sara was her standby that’s for sure!  wow.  now that is called professional! i am so proud to be her friend–a friend that can jump in and cover on a dime!  that takes talent.

my dear, dear friend stacey is getting ready for another season as a Radio City Rockette–this year in NYC!  I am so excited for her as well.  and my brother peet is going to be shooting wipeout in a month.  snaps!  hoping for my own excitement soon, but so proud of him!!

Antes de mais nada, desculpem-me pela ausência aqui por essas bandas. Não digo que isso não vai se repetir, mas, pelo menos, tem uma vantagem. Quatro dias de preparação para reaparecer após a loja de fogos de artifício explodir e destruir quarteirões em Santo André, matando duas pessoas (chegaram a ser 11, mas parece que ressuscitaram nove nas primeiras horas de cobertura). Enfim, pensou no que ia falar, no que ia negar e no que ia omitir. Mas, na hora de se vestir, não pôde perder a piada.

Pois é. Destruição, aniquilação ou assassinato. Um lançamento pra lá de explosivo. Em breve nas livrarias.

Duvido que estivesse só com a roupa do corpo. Até uma camisetinha mamãe-sou-forte tava valendo. Depõe contra, mas a tal camisa surfista-descolada com o inocente wipeout estampado pega um pouco pior.

Look, everyday can’t be Sunday okay (though that shouldn’t stop you from praying about it).  If you want to veg out during the week, then you gotta watch something other than football.  These are a couple of shows to help you Family Men pass the time.

10. Sportscenter – Okay, so maybe everyday can be Sunday.  I’m not even gonna get into the NFL Network and NBA TV.  I just don’t know a man alive who watches TV and doesn’t peak at Sportcenter.  That would be like a lion nonchalantly passing by an injured gazelle.  Even if he isn’t hungry, he’s gonna look.  It’s his nature.

There is no crying in an emergency.

9. Trauma – None of that sappy, “I love you, but you don’t notice me” garbage.  This show pushes forward with a shot of testosterone inspiring the cowboy in all of us.  I mean, if you spent your day saving lives, wouldn’t you have a swagger about it?

8. The Daily Show/Colbert Report – F— CNN.  Quadruple f— Fox News.  They never know what the hell they’re talking about anyway.  If you want news updates from someone with a clear agenda watch these guys.  That agenda, by the way, is laugh out loud comedy.

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas thanks to these guys.

7. CSI – I know there are a ton of CSI’s out there and they are all different, but none better than the first.  As with most things in life, stick with the original.

Do you know where your children are? If not, they will.

6. Law & Order SVU – Except when it comes to Law & Order.  Hey, the student is suppose to surpass the teacher.  This is one of those cases where some genius took the original and made it better.  I would even go as far as calling this a family show.  I would totally sit down with my sons, nieces and nephews and show them what could happen if they don’t follow the rules when they go outside.

The only difference between this place and major universities: the paper the degrees are printed on.

5. Community – A lot of people in Hollywood seem to think it’s cool to be an a–hole.  Just watch the I hope they Serve Beer in Hell trailer.  But there is nothing cool about being a straight-up douche.  Community however, is about an egotistical, self-centered, jerk with a heart of gold…sort of.  It’s like the male version of a stripper.

4. The Office – My wife put me on to this show.  I haven’t stopped laughing since.  And no I don’t want to see the British version.  What’s really cool about this show is that everyone looks and acts like they work in an office.  Could you imagine this same show with the cast of say, an older version of Gossip Girls?  In what high school on the planet is everyone that f—in’ pretty…and with that many fake problems?

I didn't know you could fit that many "ball" jokes into one hour of television.

3. Wipeout – I hate reality TV just as much as the next guy, but this show hits the mark.  Yea, the comedy is simply people fall down, but the brilliance of the show is the timing.  There is no lag time.  It’s just one fall after the other.  And the hosts are actually funny (in a childish, goofy kind of way).  Besides, if this obstacle course was at your county fair…you know you would try it.  You know you would.

2. House – Again, I know he’s a jerk.  I know most men would’ve kick this cripples cane, but it’s nice to watch someone that high up buck the system.  He’s a revolutionary!  He’s the type that’s kickin’ ass and taking names no matter who gets in his way.  He’s not concerned with money or politics, just saving lives.  Maybe the real medical industry should watch this show.

1. Burn Notice – Where do I even begin?  This guy is what all men should aspire to be.  I mean, he’s a do-it-yourself expert, could author a book on 1,001 ways to kill a man, isn’t intimidated by strong women, dresses like a man and not a mannequin, he treats his mother with respect no matter what their history…do I even need to continue?  Oh yea, most importantly, he would stop at nothing to protect his family!  This show is f—in’ educational too!  I didn’t even know you could bust a pad lock with a dry cleaning rack…but I do now!

Comme bon nombre d’entre vous, je n’ai pu m’empêcher de jeter un coup d’oeil à la programmation de “V”.

Déjà, “V”…tout simplement une lettre pour nommer une chaîne de télévision, ça donne un mauvais présage à l’imagination et la créativité des propriétaires.

Connaissant ces derniers, on ne peut faire autrement que de faire le lien entre “V” et “Vidange”. Finalement, c’est très similaire à ce qu’on nous offre depuis le début septembre.

Je vais faire un survol vite fait car des vidanges, ce n’est pas agréable pour personne alors on se pince le nez et on y va pour en finir au plus vite.

“Dumont 360″ : Mario Dumont a l’air aussi à l’aise devant les caméras du studio de Télé-Québec que je peux l’être lorsqu’un médecin me fait un test de la prostate, mais bon, laissons une chance au pauvre homme qui doit travailler avec les moyens du bord et affronter le roi des nouvelles, Pierre Bruneau.

La version québécoise de «Wipeout», diffusée à l’heure du souper, a de quoi donner des malaises gastriques à ses téléspectateurs. Le duo Alain Dumas et Réal Béland à l’animation, en compagnie de Valérie Simard, est aussi fatigant et inutile qu’un maringouin. Les personnages des deux Jacques, auquels on a dû, j’imagine, voulu donner l’intelligence d’un pissenlit, est tout simplement ennuyeux et dépourvu d’humour [de bon goût, bien sûr].

Autrement dit, pour regarder des gens foncer dans des boules en mousse et plonger la tête première dans l’eau, en français ou en anglais, ça ne fait aucune différence. Malheureusement, le manque de brio des animateurs du Québec nous donne le goût de passer à la langue de Shakespeare.

Jean-François Baril est la preuve que la mode de faire des humoristes des animateurs de tous genres doit cesser ! Il y a de quoi s’ennuyer de Luc Senay en regardant «La Guerre Des Clans».

On sera sans aucun doute tous emballés de regarder Jacques Villeneuve rénover son château ! De quoi faire chier la population en général pendant que celle-ci fait face à son plus haut taux d’endettement. Ça doit être la définition du divertissement de «V», regarder des snobs se monter un manoir pendant que vous venez de perdre votre travail et votre maison.

La seule bonne nouvelle, c’est la disparition de «Call TV». Cette gang de bandits d’Autriche qui, à l’image de Nathalie Simard, ont dû se pousser dans le Sud avec les profits faits sur le dos de téléspectateurs un peu trop naïfs. Qu’adviendra-t-il des brillantes animatrices du jeu ? Personne le sait et tout le monde s’en calisse ! Bon débarras !

The Beautiful Life: TBL – 9/8c on The CW

The last of the new show premieres on the CW is here. TBL is about the New York modeling world and you can check out my review here. I only saw the 25 minute presentation but I am really looking forward to seeing the full pilot because there is potential here. The chemistry with the lead Sara Paxton and the male characters is great and Misha Barton is used perfectly in the pilot as is Elle McPherson. If you are watching Top Model stay around for TBL, and if you are not still check it out.

Top Chef: Las Vegas – 10/9c on Bravo Was last week’s episode the best episode ever? Is this season the best season ever? I think it might just be. Las Vegas has been on fire with delivering great challenges and people this year and I think that will continue with an out in the desert challenge that will put the chefs to the limits in the elements.

Wipeout – 8/7c on ABC The season finale tonight of a consistently funny show. Record it just for a laugh now and again when you need it.

Glee – 9/8c on FOX Another show that has been yet to be not funny or sweet is GLEE! Tonight, the men form a acapella group that features appearances by Alias’s Victor Garber as Will’s dad and Josh Groban as himself. Nobody has seen this yet but with music like Mercy and Bust the Windows, how could it not be great.

So You Think You Can Dance – 8/7c on FOX Did you hear? The Shank, Adam Shankman will be a permanent judge on the table this fall season. I love him but I am a little worried that that will mean no judging by my fave Debbie Allen. Nigel has said they may add fourth guest judges some weeks although it won’t be every week. More auditions this week and if it is anything like last week there will be some great talent!

WipEout HD Racing To Retail

WipEout HD is one of the PSN’s most critically acclaimed games. So it’s no surprise that Sony wants to get it in the hands of ever more gamers.

On October 16, WipEout HD will be getting a retail release on Blu-Ray disc. Also featured on the Blu-Ray disc will be the WipEout HD Fury Add-On Pack.

It seems as though this is only coming to Europe, likely due to the fact PSN cards haven’t been available in Europe and sales might not have seen their full potential. We’ll be sure to update you if this is announced for any other regions.

Now you can add WipEout HD to the list of great releases in Sony’s holiday software onslaught.
