Robotic lawn mowers are creeping their way in to everyday American life. Like the dishwasher, they were really more trouble than they were worth in the beginning. But technological advances have made the robotic lawn mower practical.
Robotic lawn mowers can now mow on a time schedule and return to the charging base all season long without human intervention, this is the breakthrough that makes them truly useful.

Back in 2007, I got very very obsessed with the sophomore album from Sunderland’s Field Music, a 30-minute progressive punk art rock odyssey into the mundanity of small-town life. In borrowing the least lifestyle elements of Steely Dan and fusing them to a jerkiness that recalled Wire, the then-trio (comprised of the two brothers Brewis, and their friend Andrew Moore) created a masterpiece that provided concise chunks of song that packed in a multitude of musical ideas – from Billy Joel-esque piano, to crisp beatboxing. Tones of Town was magnificent, and its lack of fame was nigh-upon criminal. When the band announced they were going on hiatus, I practically cried myself to sleep.

Well now, via several intriguing side projects, they’re back. And in a more expansive mood, clearly, because their forthcoming third album, entitled Field Music (Measure), is a double album, with twenty songs that aren’t afraid to be less cohesive, in a manner apparently styled after Tusk and The Beatles. Predictably, I’m very excited, especially since the band (now a four piece, sans Moore) are whetting our appetites with two choice cuts from the album.

The first, “Each Time Is A New Time”, cruises in on a liquid bassline and some pretty FM-rock guitar, backed up by typically intricate drumming. When the vocals come in, the way they harmonise and interlock is sophisticated and aurally pleasing. Halfway through, the song cuts to a stripped-down passage that builds back up with insistently mellifluous guitar figures, wordless chanting and military percussion, before breaking straight back to the original riff. And then, in true Field Music style, it’s over.

The second sample, the title track, “Measure”, explodes from a suitably baroque string arrangement into a clanging, rustling, piano-led groove. The band has not lost its knack of combining the ancient with the modern, as the vocal interplay and hand claps (which sit alongside the strings, and some very steely guitar) will testify. The mood is wistful and meandering, interspersed with occasional shouts that recall Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac. As the song fades out to looped strings and a thrumming beat, I can’t help but feel a wave of relief that the band has stretched away from the brilliant style they had previously perfected, in order to explore new ground.

Both songs are little gems, and, wonderfully, both are available for free, from the band’s charming website. Field Music (Measure) is released 16th February 2010, on Memphis Industries, and promises to be one of the year’s most intriguing albums, not only in terms of scope and scale, but also in terms of the fascinating, filigree-like music it will contain.

Author: Matthew Francis Source: articleage.com When you are ready to layout your alarm system design

Author: Matthew Francis
Source: articleage.com

When you are ready to layout your alarm system design, for installation, drills
, you must first decide where to mount the alarm control. If you have an unfinished basement, you will be drilling down and running your wires in the rafters to the area that you select for the panel. Most often this will be the mechanical or furnace room.
If you, drills
, are working on a single, drills
, story building, you will be running your wires up into an unfinished attic and
dropping your wires down to the control.
If you are in a commercial application you will, drills
, run your wires, drills
, on top of drop ceilings or along beams or possibly through exposed conduit.
If you are in a place where, drills
, there is no place to run all these wires and hide them then you are a prime, drills
, candidate for a wireless, drills
, system.
You want to make sure that wherever you decide to mount your alarm, drills
, control panel, that you have a device such as a motion detector or door contact to protect it. Leaving the control panel in an unprotected area could make it easy to circumvent in the event of a break in. Consider running the wires through the basement, and than jumping them up into a closet, in the protected area of the house. If you are wondering “what about the exposed wires in the basement? Don’t.” Cutting the wires would duplicate opening, drills
, of the device they are running to, and would cause an alarm condition if the system were armed.
If, drills
, you elect to go wireless on your system of choice, choose a central location in the home or business that will receive a strong, drills
, radio signal from all points of protection. Remember that even on wireless system there are some wires that will need to be run. Most often they are the keypad, the siren, the power supply and the phone line. Take these runs into, drills
, consideration when choosing your central location.
Provide lighting for the chosen area, as this will be where, drills
, you are doing most of your installation work. Lay out a tarp and place all products, drills
, and tools and a, drills
, trash bag in this area. I have, drills
, learned over the years to come to, drills
, my, drills
, central location to get what I need, and return everything I’m not using back to this location when I am done with them, especially tools. If you do not, drills
, run an organized installation,, drills
, you will spend ฝ of your time searching for a tool, part, spool of wire etc. A tool belt is handy for the tools you will need everywhere, such as fresh drill bits, tape, wire cutters, screwdrivers, B- connects, a small bubble, drills
, level, stud finder, a clean rag, etc.
You also want to clean as you go. As you finish running each wire and installing the device that will go there, take, drills
, the time to clean up and bring all trash to the bag at your control zone. Being anal is a good thing, when you are doing a quality installation,, drills
, drills
, .
As you run each wire to the control room, measure where the wire is going to come into the control panel hole, and then add about, drills
, a foot of wire before cutting it with your diagonal cutters. Place a piece of light colored electrical tape around the wire about 5 inches from the end and write on the, drills
, tape, drills
, with an indelible sharpie or marker, drills
, where it is going.
If your home or business is under construction you, drills
, may elect to pre-wire it for security. Pre-wiring is beneficial in, drills
, the ability to get every device, drills
, in the exact location you, drills
, would want it. Placing wires and gang, drills
, boxes before construction is complete,, drills
, is dependent on your ability to read the architects plans and understand where cabinets, appliances and electrical devices will be placed with accuracy. If you do elect to pre-wire be sure to drill your own holes in the wall studs and rafters, drills
, . Many a lazy alarm technician will run through the electrical and plumbers holes and think they are getting away easy. The problem is that, drills
, if an electrician or plumber fails inspection they will have to pull wire and pipe out to relocate them to the inspector’s specifications, drills
, . They are not likely to be concerned about your wire, when doing so.
The best time to run your wires on a pre-wire is immediately after the electricians leave and before the insulators arrive.
If you are ready to start running wires, lets start with the front door. If you are going down to the basement you will be working low on the opening side of the door. If you are running your wires up you will be working on the top of the door, drills
, . Lets use down for our example. What kind of contact will you be using? Surface mount, drills
, or recessed? If you are running wires anyway, why don’t you take the time to install recessed contacts, drills
, so that they are out of site when, drills
, the door is closed? Set up your drill with a 3/8-inch standard length drill bit.
In the jam of the door, approximately 4 inches from the bottom begin drilling at an angle towards the basement. Switch to, drills
, your 3/8- inch by 12 to 18 inch long drill bit and continue drilling, drills
, towards the basement, finally switch to your 5-foot long bell hangers, drills
, bit and continue, drills
, drilling, drills
, till you pop out in the basement. Pull the long, drills
, bit out of the hole and remove, drills
,, drills
, it from the hole. Poke the skinny end of the long, drills
, bit down the hole.
Go down to the basement with a flashlight, diagonal wire, drills
, cutters, tape, marker,, drills
,, drills
, staple gun with staples in it, and a spool, drills
, or box of 22 gauge 2 conductor, drills
, wire. Strip the plastic,, drills
, drills
, off of the end of your wire about 2 inches. Twist the, drills
, 2, drills
, wires together and thread them through the hole at the end of the skinny side of the long bit and twist it around itself. Go back upstairs and pull the wire, drills
, up to the hole. Tie a large loose and temporary knot in the wire after, drills
, you get it there, so that it will not fall back in the hole. Leave at least 12 inches upstairs, so that you can work with the wire.
Go back downstairs and begin to, drills
, roll out enough wire to make it to your control panel, drills
, . Staple the wires, drills
, with an industrial stapler like a T22 along, drills
, the beams in a neat and orderly manner from the drop hole towards, drills
, the control panel. Be sure you are not penetrating the wire with each staple, if you do, remove it now and re-staple. These mistakes are hard to trace after you walk away. Be sure to make it down the wall stud to where, drills
, you will poke into the back of your control panel (about chest high) and leave an additional foot or more of wire before cutting it off the spool. Mark your wire with the tape and, drills
, marker several inches from the end.
Congratulations! You made your first run. Be sure to gather and return all tools to the starting point so that, drills
, you know where they are when you need them.
Get your 3/8 inch, drills
, recessed, drills
, contact and magnet. You will need a drill, extension cord (unless you, drills
, are using a wireless drill), electrical tape,, drills
, and a wire cutter. Split the end of you wire and strip a small amount of plastic cover off of each end. Do the same with your contact unless you have the type that has small screws,,, drills
, drills
, drills
, for the wires to be clamped under. Twist each end of your wire to an end of the contact wire and tape tightly and individually. After you do each one you can wrap a piece of tape around the whole thing tightly. (It does not matter which wire goes to which wire as this, drills
, is a circuit wire, and has no positive or negative side.) Carefully poke the wire into the hole and press the contact in. Now mark the door, drills
, in the spot that the magnet will meet the contact, when the door is closed. Stabilize the door and drill a 3/8 ” hole just deep enough to put the magnet in. Repeat for each door you want contacted. We always suggest that you contact every perimeter door.
Rubber tubing called “spline” is one of my favorite hardware store materials. Commonly used to press around a screen door panel, it’s cheap, easy to cut, comes in a few gauges and shades of gray or black, and (most important) is hollow–perfect for threading wire or beading cord through it. I use it often as a cord by threading it with flexible beading wire and crimping clasps at the ends.

But while playing around with 20-gauge craft wire I saw how easily it fit into the spline, and how the spline held different shapes with the heavier wire inside. This hook-and-eye clasp is one of my results. If you can make a wire wrapped loop with a pair of pliers, you’re good to go!

You can now attach a piece of jewelry in any way you desire—jump rings, crimped wire, linked wrapped loops. Of course, you can make this hook-and-eye without the tube, using 20 or 18 gauge wire for sturdiness. For some great inspiration on ways to try this clasp technique on other designs, the 2009 issue of Easy Wire is a must-have for your library.
Last week’s winter workshop at Parcel had each guest designing and embellishing a French-inspired papier-mache doll. The cost included a wide variety of new and vintage materials, yummy sweets and savories, as well as prosecco and French lemonade. A few special vintage Christmas ornaments found their way home with me too, sweetened by a shopping discount. It was one one of the best “girls’ nights” I’ve ever been to.

Riding The Storm, Rozie’s latest wonderful Mergirl sculpture has arrived at Heart Gallery and looks stunning hanging from our beamed ceiling with her sequins catching the sunlight and dancing around the room. There’s not really much I can say about her as you really have to visit to see her ‘in the flesh’ so to speak. Rozie’s wire mergirls are always popular at Heart Gallery and don’t seem to hang around for long, and I’m not surprised.

Rozie originally trained as an illustrator at Harrow School of Art (Now the University of Westminster). In 1990 she returned to college at Hereford College of Art and Design where she attended the Small Studio Practice course. Since leaving the course she has made and sold work nationally, producing large-scale pieces as well as jewellery. Although now working three-dimensionally, she continues to illustrate life and stories with her work.

Heart Gallery also showcases her amazing jewellery, miniature knitted works of art, once a year:

Although I haven’t been blogging, I have taken time to really step up my jewelry making game.

Although I haven’t been blogging, I have taken time to really step up my jewelry making game. First, I had to really think about where I wanted to take this. I had to decide between it being just a hobby, or something I wanted turn into a source of income. I think the definition of the “American Dream” is doing what you love to do, and getting paid to do it. Is that considered work? I don’t think so. I do know that if you are really passionate about what you do, then you will be succesful.

I made some things at the beginning of this year, and looking back at them, decided that they weren’t hardly good enough. This necklace was one of those things. I mean don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I kept thinking that it was missing that something that could make it a great piece of jewelry, as opposed to an okay piece of jewlery.

So I had to dismantle it. Here is how it looked before.

It was nice enought but it didn’t move me. This is how it looks now…..

I kept the pink cubic zirc, and got rid of the copper replacing it with sterling silver. I then wire wrapped some green and pink crystals and placed them between two green Swarovski bicone beads. I think adding the crystal drops at the top, and the wire wrapped beads surrounding the cz gave it more color, and more texture. It reminds me of a spring flower.

I am a hugely avid reader. If you see someone trudging out of the library buried under piles of books, that is probably me – by choice. I love books. I guess we all shouldn’t be surprised then, when I offer up creative Christmas gift idea #20 – the bookmark.

Given with or without a book, this little gizmo is the perfect way to bring a touch of creativity to your loved ones Christmas stockings this year.

5 minutes or 5 hours – this is the kind of project that works with the time you have to give it. And – if you include your kids, it is a really fun bit of together-time this hectic holiday season.

Okay – here are my suggestions – but please, please, make your bookmark your way! (After all, that is the absolute best part of being creative.)

Fun Foam!!! Fun for all ages and only scissors and glue required. Cut out any shape you want, and colour you want and get gluing. Add a tassel and this is a funky one-of-a-kind fabulous bookmark. This is 5 minute creativity at its finest (and fun too, but then again, they do call it fun foam…)

If Fun Foam is not your forte, why not try beads? This unique little bookmark is all wire and beads and one lonely little Christmas button that didn’t have a home this holiday season. Just match your wire thickness to your bead size and string on some beads. This is 10 minute creativity, and still very easy to do if you are handy with a pair of needle-nose pliers (and if you aren’t clumsy like me -how many beads can you spill during one little project?)

If, however, your gift recipient is a little more serious about their book reading, and fun foam or beads just won’t do, bring out the cardboard loom and weave a very beautiful wool bookmark. I like my woven bookmarks to be nice and wide, so this one is almost double a normal bookmark width. And, once woven, if you use felt, this bookmark can be felted too! Also great for all ages, this one did take me a little longer – it is more of a Sunday afternoon project, a relaxing thing to do with friends, good conversation and great hot chocolate.

But then again, don’t just take my word on the whole creative-bookmark-ideas-thing. Lots of great creative people are making some really awesome bookmarks:

Check out Craftbits.com for their crocheted star flower bookmark
Better Homes and Gardens has a funky bookmark with shrink art, beads and pipe cleaners
National Geographic has a cool online tool for kids to help build their own bookmark
or… find out how to make a more grown up patchwork bookmark here

Knit it, stamp it, paint it, glue it, quilt it, or stitch it… be creative and make a bookmark your gift this season. Which one would you like to get (or give) this year?

Well Iowa city, I have about three Radioloveless shows left before I leave the KRUI airways for good. Two shows will consist of my favorite tracks to hear, thus the title of my post. If you listen to the show, I’m sure you’ve heard most of them. Either way, the next two shows will be filled with my favorites. The last show will be my Christmas show, which is always a fun show to do.

I’ll be moving back east next year, after living and DJing in Iowa city for the past 6. I love it here, and I love KRUI even more. Listen in at 89.7 fm or online here. Here’s the show

1. R.E.M.’s Fables of Reconstruction (1985), Driver 8
2. Sebadoh, Bakesale (1994, oh and the naked baby on the cover is Lou Barlow), Skull
(It’s my favorite track from Sebadoh along with lots of other kids my age, thank you Lou for bringing this into my life.)

3. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Pig Lib (2003), Vanessa from Queens
(Steve defines cool, even if I can’t figure out what he’s singing about)
4. Teenage Fanclub, Bandwagonesque (1991), Star Sign
(This just sounds like the 90s to me, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and little.)
5. The Velvet Underground, The Velvet Underground, Pale Blue Eyes
(Uhm, who doesn’t like this song?)
6. Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002), I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
This is my favorite Wilco album, I keep coming back.
7. Wire, Pink Flag (1977), 1 2 X U
8. Yo La Tengo, President Yo La Tengo (1989), Barnaby Hardly Working
9. Catherine Wheel, Ferment (1992), Black Metallic
10. Black Tambourine, Complete Recordings, Pack You Up
This track is so short and cool, it just makes me want to go out and be their groupie if they were still around.
11. The Dandy Warhols, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia (1999), Sleep
I can’t help it, I love this album.
12. Big Star, #1 Record (1972), Thirteen
Rolling stone said it was “one of the most beautiful songs about Adolescence.”
13. The Breeders, Pod (1990), When I was a Painter
14. Pavement, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain (1994), Silence Kit (awesome request for Sutcliffe Catering Song but was having issues with my CD.)
15. Built to Spill, Perfect From Now On (1997), I would Hurt a Fly
16. Cat Power, What would the Community Think (1996), Bathysphere
17. The Church, Starfish (1988), Under the Milky Way
18. Cocteau Twins, Head Over Heels (1983), When Mama was a Moth

19. My Bloody Valentine, Loveless (1991), When you Sleep
Pitchfork quoted Loveless as the best album of the 90’s, I might have to agree.
20. The Clash, The Clash (1977), Janie Jones
21. Sleater-Kinney, One Beat (2002), Combat Rock
22. Depeche Mode, Violator (1990), Blue Dress

For some reason I’ve been stuck on turquoise and red, a great southwest color combination. I’ve been collecting buttons, beads and other findings in those colors for months. Until recently I haven’t had the time to do anything with them. I would wander into my studio to stare at some pretty turquoise and coral. I decided I needed a bit of discipline. Instead of starting with the stones and coral, I decided to begin with some ceramic turquoise beads I bought and some red plastic buttons I found at an estate sale.

I formed a chain by wire wrapping my ceramic tube beads onto copper wire.

I found a wonderful vintage metal button in my collection. The patina on the button goes well with the copper wire I used for wire-wrapping. I wanted a little fringe on my pendant. I decided to reuse some wonderful brass tube beads. I put red glass seed beads on the end of copper head pins added the brass tubes, did a bit of wire-wrapping, connected them to a reused round glass bead (turquoise too!). Viola! I had fringed pendant.

To each side of my re-purposed vintage metal button, I added a wire-wrapped head pin with a pretty red glass bead and a little turquoise Howlite bead.

My vintage button has a shank. I didn’t want to remove the shank, so I slipped a copper head pin through the shank, added a couple reused glass turquoise beads and put in a wire-wrapped loop. The beads in this case are used as spacers to make sure the wire loop is below the button.

I thought that this necklace should sit a little closer to the neck, so I added a minimal amount of copper chain to each side of the necklace. The clasp is a copper-colored metal toggle.

I have so many components that are red, turquoise and copper that I think I may have to create a Southwest-inspired recycle jewelry video soon.
