Hello Stef!

I am so late in posting my ‘wish you were here’, this week.

So today I decided to try to make a chocolate cake from scratch for Thanksgiving.  I know it’s not very Thanksgiving-like, but I decided to give it the ol’ college try. I’ve never used that phrase before, and there I went.

I found it on the Food Network’s site, by the Barefoot Contessa.  I love her.  She’s so happy and just kind of quietly and joyfully making stuff in her kitchen while her husband Jeffrey stops in every once in a while to say hello.  My favorite was when she wanted to recreate their time in a Paris brasserie and she made the same fish dish and even got a French paper for him, Le Monde, I think.  It’s the details I tell you.  The details.  Anyhoozles, I thought I’d try her recipe for chocolate cake.  I can’t tell how it turned out.  It smells great but also so chocolatey and sugary I’m wondering if I messed up somewhere.  2 cups of sugar, really?  Yeeesh!  My teeth cried a little when I poured those two cups into the mixing bowl. I think it’s too much.  What do I know….but I think it was too much.

I’ll tell you how it turns out…if I my teeth don’t fall when I take my first bite.  Wish you were here to give me cake advice.

If I didn’t think it was kinda funny, I might actually go and punch someone in the face over this one!  And I’m sure many can relate:

So, you’re flat broke.  No job.  No change in your circumstances in sight.  You’ve budgeted every dime; planned out every meal.  Since you haven’t left the house in a couple of days in a row, you wear the same outfit (the risk of being caught wearing those pants again is very slim, so go ahead…Do It!).  You’ve scaled back to the point where walking to the grocery store not only saves gas, but also a gym membership.  You dread going to get the mail because you figure that tucked in the stack of junk coupons, there’s a bill you’ve forgotten to budget in.  And then, there it is…tucked in those coupons, instead of finding a bill, you find a postcard.  You crane your neck forward and scrunch your brow to take a closer look.  Yup, definitely a postcard.  One from some friends of yours (gainfully employed, of course), who sent it while on their vacation.  You flip it over to see a picture of the most remote, white, sandy beach and the bluest water you can imagine.  A quick flip back to where one writes about their amazing time, and you see the four words that make you wish it was a bill, instead:  Wish You Were Here!

Uh, Seriously?  SERIOUSLY.

First of all, who sends postcards anymore?  F*cking post a picture on your Facebook profile and move on, Bragger!  But for those people who insist on sending cards detailing your expensive travel-adventure (I mean, no one sends postcards when they’re camping in Oklahoma, do they?), could you put a little more thought into what you’re sending while licking the postage stamp?

What broke, unemployed friend, who hasn’t exercised in weeks (certainly NOT beach ready), and is wearing the same, gray, hooded sweatshirt (last week’s pizza stain included), wants a postcard of your vacation???  And what makes me kinda chuckle, is the one that says, “Wish You Were Here!” from the friends you were SUPPOSED to be traveling with, but you backed out of the trip when you got the axe.  And the best part?  Wait until they get back and they ask if you received their postcard!  Yup, your hell over this one is not yet over, my friend.  It’s likely to pop up again as soon as you see your tanned, relaxed, wrinkle-free friends on the street!

(The truth of the matter is I like getting postcards.  And getting mail that isn’t a bill is kinda fun, too.  I’m happy for my friends that don’t have to suffer right now.  But c’mon….postcards are a little like washing your hands after getting a papercut from opening up bills, right?  It stings.)

So any guesses where the postcard was from?  Hint:  It’s in the Caribbean.

So Stef, I totally wish you could come out here to New York and visit.  But since that won’t happen for a while, I’ll share with you via the interweb, what I wish you could share out here!

The other night I got to spend some quality time with some friends and eat a fatted pig.  It was a great time, and I wish you were here to stuff your belly with us.  Then we played a fun round of a charades/memory/description type game and our brains exploded.

And it’s been pretty out, just slightly chilly with a little breeze.  I was eating on Sunday with my friend Erin, and we looked out the window and saw a yellow tree.  I think you would have liked that too.  Here’s someone else’s version of the tree I found that looks just like it.  I know it’s hard to imagine the leaves turning color when it’s 95 degrees where you are, but just picture it for a minute.  Hope your move is going well, my grown up friend!

Another weekend, another food market! This weekend I will be at Wish You Were Here in the Newburgh Quarter, off Carnaby St in Soho. There will live music, lots of food and frivolity and there is lots of sunshine forecast. So, come on down from 12.30 to 6pm on Sunday. I’ll be serving up home salted beef bagels, organic Irish smoked salmon w/ cream cheese and cucumber pickle bagels, black bean chilli (v) and spiced pumpkin soup (v). Should be lots of fun!

Since October 3, London has been giving locals and tourists the opportunity to experience the genuine New York lifestyle as retailers from the famous US city are opening shop in the UK capital for just four weeks.

I wish this had been in London when I was down there for the Moctezuma exhibition at the British Museum but it looks like I was a week too soon!

Taking place on London’s Carnaby Street, the event is part of an initiative called Wish You Were Here, which aims to let locals in both London and New York experience what it’s like to switch cities for a month. As London and New York are two of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, I can’t imagine exactly how different it’ll be – but there isn’t a doubt that some experiences, such as catching a yellow New York cab down the road, will be great fun for London residents and visitors to the capital.

Wish You Were Here wants to promote an exchange of cultures, which is why it also got part of London to uproot and move to the Big Apple last month, an experience that many New Yorkers must’ve been thrilled by (and many London tourists may have found a bit baffling). Each move brings with it shops, street vendors, markets, food, drink and, of course, the people. All of the New Yorkers currently selling New York classics like hot dogs, pizza and pretzels on the streets of London have never been to the city before and had no idea what to expect when they got here – so they simply set up shop and got down to business.

I really think this is a wonderful idea. Especially during the recession when so many people are having to postpone their dreams of travelling somewhere far afield due to a lack of cash flow, it’s an excellent opportunity to enjoy some of the authentic experience of another city without having to break the bank.

I just can’t wait for the Hong Kong swap
