Gucci Mane x Verse Simmonds “Wish You Would”

DJ Khaled enlists legendary music video director Hype Williams for the Kanye West and Rick Ross-assisted dual track for “I Wish You Would/Cold” which premiered last night on BET’s 106th and Park. Pulled from his forthcoming sixth studio album Kiss the Ring, signature look and frenetic energy – all staples of a Hype Williams set – produce a strong, visual representation of the mashed up tracks. And for those wondering…Kim Kardashian makes an appearance as well.

DJ Khaled has been known primarily for his ability to create highly successful collaborations, and this track is no exception.  Starring Kanye West and Rick Ross, this Hype Williams-directed visual consists of some dark, frantic cinematography that matches the tone of the Hit-Boy production.  The video segues into Kanye’s track “Cold”, with a surprising feature from Kim Kardashian.  DJ Khaled’s Kiss the Ring drops August 21st; expect to hear Nas, Scarface, J. Cole, French Montana, Kendrick Lamar, and many others.

This is one I’ve been waiting anxiously to listen to. Received a copy of Ludacris’ 6th studio album “Theater Of The Mind”, which hits shelves on November 24th. Anticipated as one of the albums of the year, can it live up to the hype?

Ever since Luda announced that he was doing this album, I immediately marked it down as something that I was looking forward to hear, whether it be good or bad. Let’s get to it.

The Basics

Ludacris, a long-time, prominent rapper from the South is known for his consistently solid discography. This being his 6th album, Luda went with the concept of having a ‘theatrical’ album. Everything from the cover art to the songs themselves, Luda said he wanted you to picture a movie scene on each and every track. Alot of big-name producers (DJ Toomp, Don Cannon, 9th Wonder, etc) and features (Chris Rock, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Nas, etc) should make for a solid tape.

The Music

• ‘Intro‘ – Normally an intro isn’t regarded as anything magnificent or noteworthy, but this one’s a little different. It opens with a movie-theater like atmosphere and then The Runners beat hits. I happen to like their style so I liked this track. As soon as ‘let the show begin’ is announced, in comes Luda with a little minute welcome to the album. It is good for what it is – an intro.
• ‘Undisputed‘ – Pairing up with legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather as his ‘trainer’ on the song, Luda goes in hard on this song, doing a good job storytelling and has some nice punchlines. The beat was done by Don Cannon, and it’s one of the best of the album. Not much else to say, solid track and a definite for future radio play.
• ‘Wish You Would‘ – This one’s for the streets. Collaborating with fellow dirty south artist T.I., and with production from DJ Toomp, this is one of the few ‘gangsta’ tracks on “Theater”. This was officially announced as the second single, but the first street single. It’s not something you’d hear on the radio, but rather something blasting in the car next to you at a red light.
• ‘One More Drink‘ – Ooh…this one’s for the ladies. Teaming up with T-Pain on the hook, the song, from the get go, fills your ears with an intoxicating beat that’s just perfect to chill to. The chorus isn’t specifically perfect for the radio (“If I take one more drink, Imma end up f*ckin’ you”) so this is 99.9% more likely to get some play in the clubs. All in all, the females will eat this one up and even if you’re a dude, you can still appreciate it.
• ‘Call Up The Homies’ – This track has some solid features (The Game, Willy Northpole) and Clinton Sparks does his thing with the production but it’s just not something I can get into. The hook is weak (“Call up the homies, it’s about to go down”). Game outshined Luda verse-by-verse and it didn’t bode well for him. Maybe this track appeals to others but it’s definitely something I’d skip over.
• ‘Southern Gangsta‘ – I like to call this track what ‘Call Up The Homies’ SHOULD have been. He was trying to go the streets approach on both and this one works out a little bit better. With Ving Rhames doing the voice-over, Luda does his thing and has some nice lines (“I keep my ear to the streets like a cockerspaniel”). Ricky Ross has a verse and the Port of Miami prince goes off. This track fit Ross better, in my opinion, but not the worst I’ve ever heard and definitely an upgrade over the aforementioned ‘Call Up The Homies’.
• ‘Everybody Hates Chris‘ – I don’t know what to categorize this track as. With an opening montage from Chris Rock, you get the impression this one goes out to his haters. If you didn’t get that impression, take a listen to the hook (“Say f*ck you Luda”, repeat x4). That’s not going to get much radio air time, and it isn’t something you’d bump your head to at a club. Other than categorically speaking, Don Cannon sets up something to ride to. I guess that’s why everybody hates Chris.
• ‘What Them Girls Like’ – When you hit track number 8, you’ve arrived at the start of the softer Ludacris part of the CD. With features such as Chris Brown and Sean Garrett, the first thought was that it’s some love song. That quickly changed however when you hear the middle-Eastern-type beat from Darkchild and how fast-paced it goes. Brown and Garrett are only used on the hook, so the song is pretty much all Luda. Without a doubt a song that would make the club rotation if the DJ heard it.
• ‘Nasty Girl‘ – Like I said above, the softer part of the album has been reached. Anything with Plies on it will get the attention of the radio and clubs (for whatever reason) so that’s where this is going. I like Storch’s beat but I’m not a big fan of this song or the next, just too soft for me.
• ‘Contagious‘ – Thank the lord the stretch is over. This track is undoubtably the softest and slowest-paced song on the entire CD and you immediately get that impression when it opens with (Mr. Willie Beamen) Jamie Foxx. I don’t like this one at all so I won’t waste time reviewing it.
• ‘Last Of A Dying Breed‘ – Here we go. This is #11 and the start of a stretch of the 3 best songs. Opening with a film reel and a simple song, the song methodically builds up until Luda’s verse starts at around 30 seconds in. This is the hardest Ludacris has sounded in years and totally obliterates this track. Some great one-liners (“Cuz everyone of my verses been instant, like replay”) and everything simply works in this song. Everybody’s favorite, Lil Wayne, comes in swinging with his verse (“Precious like an artifact, valuable like a quarterback”) and really impressed me. Everything from the beat, to the rappers, to the flow is done perfectly, making this possibly the most complete diddy on “Theater”.
• ‘MVP‘ – Ahh. To quote Heath Ledger, as the Joker, “and here….we….go”. That’s how I felt as soon as I came up to this song, the one that I was looking forward to hearing the most, resisting the temptation to listened the leak a couple weeks ago, now it’s my favorite song off of the entire album. The reason WHY it’s so good? Well, Primo aka DJ Premier is on the track. It opens with Preem’s famous needle-scratch noises and then “I’m the MVP, I’m stupid with this rap sh*t. Here I am, I’m the man, word”. And more of Premier’s magic. Aside from him, Luda holds his own also, delivering another solid, solid piece of music. This being Premier’s first collaboration with a southern artist, I think he did OK.
• ‘I Do It For Hip-Hop‘ – Don’t know exactly HOW Ludacris put this together, but he somehow managed to get legendary rappers Nas and Jay-Z as features on this song. Ludacris has a nice verse and then is pretty much relegated to hook duty when the big boys’ time to shine come up. Overall, you can’t wrong just because of who is on this song alone. Very solid.
• ‘Do The Right Thing‘ – Surprisingly, “Theater Of The Mind” doesn’t end with an Outro, simply this song, which is one to file away in the ‘kick back, relax, and just zone out when listening’ category. Spike Lee does some voiceover and joining them is Common, adding his own twist. 9th Wonder, another favorite producer of mine, showed why he’s so world renowned with this one.

Overall

Aside from his rap skills, Ludacris is quite the accomplished actor, having starred in two big action movies in the past couple of months (Max Payne, Rock’n'Rolla). I like how he put this project together and the ingenunity with the movie theater feel. While there’s no questions some tracks could have been better, “Theater Of The Mind” is solid and consistent throughout with the few great tracks sprinkled in. You can’t ask for much more than that. I would put this right up there in the top 5 albums of the year with Jeezy’s “Recession” and T.I.’s “Paper Trail”. This should sell quite a few copies when it hit stores, so Luda should be doing OK for himself.
