Recently, a teenager in Florida named Kaitlyn Hunt was expelled from her high school, SRHS. Although, this time, the teen did not perform a simple science experiment. This time, the teen was having a consensual, same-sex relationship with another wonderful woman who apparently had extremely anti-gay parents. As you could expect, the outcome would be chaotic, but did you ponder that it could lead to felony charges?

At first, the police barged into Kate’s house, handcuffed her and lugged her off to jail for “sexual battery”. At the court, Kate was told she could continue going to school, but she was not to have any contact with her girlfriend. However, this did not stop Kate’s 15-year-old girlfriend’s parents. The next step the parents took was to petition the court and ask the judge to remove Kate from the school even though it had already been ruled that Kate could stay. Once again, the judge said Kate could remain at the school.

However, these parents of Kate’s girlfriend were ruthless. As Kate’s mother, Kelley, went to speak with the school board, she soon found out that the school board had decided to expel Kate. Kate was then forced to attend an alternative school for the rest of the year (she could still participate in the graduation walking at SRHS fortunately.)

As Kelley thought that things couldn’t get any worse, she was informed that the parents of Kate’s girlfriend had persuaded state attorneys to file felony charges! The parents of Kate’s girlfriend had taken incredibly extreme steps to finally shove possible severe punishments onto Kate. If Kate is ruled guilty her life will be slowed down and future opportunities will be denied all because of love.

This is a horridly sad story that reminds us that prejudice is still out there, and it will probably be out there for a while. The scary thing is the way that this kind of hate manages to slip into legal actions. The simple action of falling in love with somebody can now result in felony charges if this bigotry manages to find its way into legal systems. How scary is that? The thought that love can be suppressed (if not extinguished) if someone who doesn’t like you files a complaint. If you were to fall deeply in love with the perfect person that may be of the same gender and torn away by people’s disparagement, how would you feel?

We can’t allow things like this to happen. How the hell can felonies be loaded and ready to fire in the name of prejudice at a woman for loving another woman? Think of the impact this would have on a teenager. As Kelley states, “Kate is having night terrors, she is in depression; it’s horrible to watch. Kate was the happiest child, always smiling, always happy and uplifting. And now she has to push through the tears to get through every day.” Because she was legally chastised for loving somebody do we think she’ll be bold enough to open her heart to the adult world? Probably and hopefully she will, but she might be frightened to do it at first.

The power of bigotry can be underestimated, but when it shows its demonic face it should be used as a reminder to us that we need to keep fighting.
