The search for Elena’s BFF, complete with lots of loving flashbacks devoted to their relationship, was never going to be something I particularly enjoyed - especially as said BFF was just as irritating as Elena herself.  However, thanks to only keeping half an eye on the tv and the rest of my attention on surfing the internet, the episode passed just fine.  In fact, it might have been quite good.  Until the ending.  I assume we were supposed to think it was heroic, rather than annoying, but it involved this pair, so there was absolutely no danger of me seeing it that way.

A weeping statue, a girl missing her dad, and a couple of little miracles? Aw.  I really liked this one. 

The story about hope and faith and family was sweet, the main guest actors (Thomas Calabro and Hayley McFarland) were very likeable and even Jack managed to join in the spirit of things by growing up and letting Sam and her babydaddy work things out for themselves, rather than throwing his weight around and forcing her into a corner.  Like I said – miracles.

I watched WAT last night and 24 hours later, I still have nothing to say about it.  It wasn’t a bad episode at all, just not particularly worth talking about, and it looks like inspiration ain’t gonna come any time soon.    So, seeing as only about 2 people are watching this anyway, can I just say:-

1. Marianne “Special Agent Vivian Johnson” Jean-Baptiste directed this one,

2. It was about a missing 12 year old fed up with her divorced parents, and

3. It was perfectly fine.

And leave it at that?

“That was an odd one, wasn’t it?” 

Said one FBI agent to another at the end of this episode – and it was.  A slightly strange meeting of worldes olde and new(e) as the tale of a missing tv weatherman somehow got mixed up with the world of Civil War re-enactments.  

I’m not entirely convinced that the story hung together all that well, the characters were very one-note, and the super-selfish weatherman changing personality overnight seemed a bit unlikely, but there were enough flashes of humour to keep things ticking along pleasantly enough and I found myself sort of enjoying it, in spite of its flaws.  And, on the plus side, it wasn’t just the mystery of the missing weatherman that was solved – I’ve never really understood why people get involved in Civil War re-enactments and that sort of thing, but watching this, I had a bit of an epiphany.  It’s just a big game of soldiers, isn’t it?

Once we’d got the sub-ER/Grey’s Anatomy-type scene right at the beginning out of the way, this missing doctor story had the makings of a really good episode, I thought.  Danny and Martin had loads to do, Jack and Elena’s involvement was minimal, and it was all going pretty well, but unfortunately it all fizzled out towards the end with a disappointingly generic villain and some more obnoxious Jack shenanigans.  And I’m sorry, but the utterly ridiculous idea that an FBI agent would take part in a guns-and-bullet-proof-vests SWAT-type raid while wearing a knee-length tight pencil skirt and high heels might add to some people’s enjoyment of this show, but not mine.

WAT wandered into sister show Cold Case’s territory this week as the search for a missing man led to Jack and Sam solving a 15 year old Californian double murder.  So far so ok, but any entertainment I could have had from the story was completely cancelled out by my disgust as Jack, being a selfish, predatory and wholly irredeemable excuse for a manager, used the investigation as an excuse (and funding) to take Sam to sunny LA (away from her infant son) so he could weasel his way back into her life.  And she let him.  Girlfriend is an idiot.

Nothing hugely exciting here unless you’re in the section of the population interested in seeing Agent Elena Delgado in her underwear.  That group does not include me.

Anyway, this story of a missing, tetraplegic young man with a secret vigilante life was okay, but a bit plodding. Some incredibly clunky dialogue about “special days” and “pervs” and whatnot didn’t help either.  Elena (now clothed) and Jack’s interviews of various suspects in particular were far too self-consciously smart-mouthed and posturing to impress anybody.  Mediocre.

Jack’s back in charge, a woman goes missing, she wants to have a baby, she has a dark secret…yada yada yada. 

Nothing new (or interesting) at all then, except for a bizarre sub-plot where Martin feels guilty for being offered a promotion.  Dude, what?

While I love my job, it does get unbelievably boring sometimes and today was one of those days. So as my mind wandered as my work computer reached speeds previously seen only by sloths and the ice age, I came up with a list of three shows that started out great, but then sort of … fell.

Heroes: I admit, I didn’t get what the hype was all about at first. But on a lark, I watched the first episode and it was love at first sight. I quickly caught up on the eight episodes I was lagging behind and waited religiously for Monday to roll around. I loved the characters, the writing, the situational set up. I loved everything. I even went and watched the last two episodes in Spanish just to see them on time instead of waiting until I was back in an English speaking country.

The show had everything going for it, and then it flopped. Season 2 was dull, Season 3 a headache, and I simply gave up before Season 4 even came around. Originally, Heroes had planned to have an all new cast every season with the old cast making cameo appearances. That? Would have been awesome. Some new blood, some new plot lines, it would have given the show a new start every season. But the characters were too popular. So popular in fact, that some have been brought back from the dead more times than the Summers family.

I suppose Heroes has achieved its goal of being comic book like. Between the characters who won’t stay dead, the plot lines that go nowhere, the plot holes you could loose a dump truck in, drops in continuity from one story to the next, retcons, and the general repetitiveness Heroes has indeed become a comic book with a tv show budget. However, the problem is the that those same things are what bother a lot of people about comic books.

Perhaps some new blood would help rejuvenate this show, but for now the only new blood we get is whichever new Petrelli pops out of the wood work.

Without a Trace: I am a TNT addict. For six years, lunch time was in front of the television with whatever was on TNT at the moment. The only times the channel was changed was when ER was on and the Food Network had Good Eats running. When I stopped having regular access to a television, the only things I really missed where TNT and Food Network. And now that Food Network is no longer watchable – TNT is the only thing.

Among the shows I discovered on TNT was Without a Trace. As usual with me and most shows, I was horribly behind and was watching in syndication and out of order. It didn’t matter. I was in love. I loved the characters, the writing, the cases, the cinematography, everything. When I got a Netflix account, the first thing I ordered was Season 1 of Without a Trace and watched it in one afternoon. (The second thing was all six Star Wars movies. Also watched in one afternoon. That was also the year I watched all of Doctor Who Season 1 in one night.)

Needless to say, it was one of my top shows for a while. I managed to watch all of the first three seasons in a rather unhealthy amount of time and got some friends and family addicted as well. And then…Season 4. And 5. And 6 and 7. I tried. I really did. But about halfway through, I would want to either kill or kick or just scream at the characters. And the new girl in Season 4 just bothered me. I think it says something that I can’t even remember her name. Rosalie or something? Or was that the actress?

Let’s just say that if even adding James Masters to your show doesn’t help, you have a problem. When you can tell that the actors are not even phoning in their lines and wish they were ten miles away, you have a problem. When your writing is horrible and your plots simply make no sense, you have a problem. When half your fans are begging for the show to be canceled, you most certainly have a problem. Thankfully, it was finally put out of its misery last season. As far as I know, the campaign to keep it afloat was superficial at best.

At least we’ll always have reruns and three excellent seasons.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Yes, Buffy made my list. I only got into Buffy between season six and seven and for some reason didn’t realize that that there were more than three seasons. I don’t know how I managed that. But that summer, I watched all three seasons and my best friend and I ran all over town to read every single Buffy book there was and then getting our families addicted to Buffy.

There is a reason Buffy is a cult show and is still popular to this day. Say what you want about Joss, but the man knows how to write an excellent show. The characters were real and diverse (in personality at least), the writing was outstanding, the acting worked, and you wanted to know what would happen next. For three years, Buffy rocked.

But then came college. Few shows survive the move from one setting to another. And Buffy did try. Season Four did have the ever excellent Hush and the season finale that was both unusual and full of excellent foreshadowing. But it also had Beer Bad, Riley, and chip!Spike. Season Five had a very good overarching plot, some excellent episodes, and a stellar, well written and well executed ending. I would have been perfectly happy had the show just ended there.

But then we got Seasons 6 and 7. I don’t know which one is worse. While 7 was unbelievably dull and pointless, it at least didn’t make me want to throw things at the television or made me walk out of the room rolling my eyes. But Season 6 had Once More With Feeling. Either way, both seasons were barely watchable for their own unique reasons. Between emo!Buffy, pod!Spike, and addicted!Willow, I barely recognized the characters I had fallen in love. By the time Season 7 ended, I was ready to say good-bye. Of course, now there’s Season 8, it’s not a TV show so I’m not going to go into that here.

Honorable Mentions That Didn’t Quite Make the List:
Charmed: Yes, it got really bad there at the end. But it was never that good to begin with. Sure, the first three Seasons were entertaining, but they were never Buffy, Heroes, or Without a Trace good.

Battlestar Galactica: While it started out incredibly strong, Season 4 was probably one of the weaker seasons. But the drop in quality was really not that large when compared with every other show and they did at least tie up all loose ends.

Torchwood and Doctor Who: They’re both two uneven for me to fit them in this pattern. Doctor Who Season One is strong, but so was Season 4 and bits of 2 and 3. Torchwood had a much stronger Season 2 than 1, and the problem with 3 was not the quality but the content. Plus, they’re both in progress – at least I think both, I’m not sure about Torchwood – so who knows what will happen.

Coupling: Again, while the last Season was weaker than the first three, it wasn’t enough to really warrant that much of a complaint. Same goes for Veronica Mars.

At last, Eric Close has something to do?  Hurrah!

The lovely Agent Fitzgerald has to find a missing woman all on his lonesome, as the Boss pulls the rest of the team to look for a kidnapped little girl, making for a compelling episode and an unshowy, utterly believable performance from Close as the under-used and under-appreciated Martin.  His quiet determination and doggedly hard work is a welcome contrast to Jack’s over-heated over-dramatics, as Malone is only ever a hostile glare away from going postal instead of going through the proper procedures. 

Yet again, however, the writers tell us that it’s Jack who’s right and reward him for it.  It’s increasingly disturbing – and in an episode where the missing little girl has blonde hair and is called Madeline, I don’t need any more disturbing -  that week on week this show insists that the only way to get things done is to ignore rights and rules that are there for plenty of good reasons.  Vigilantism is a dangerous and irresponsible thing to promote, and this show should know better.

A surprisingly good episode, this one.  The story(about the missing teenage son of a secret service agent) started off fairly uninspiringly but gradually pulled me in, culminating in a genuinely moving final sequence worthy of the show at its best.

Unsurprisingly, however, the episode’s merits were completely overshadowed by Jack Malone’s shortcomings.  Not content with his usual self-aggrandisement, this week he seemed to be working extra hard to be an ass; rude, belligerent and, in one horrific scene, flirtatious.  NO ONE needs to see that. 

The only thing more appalling than Fathead Malone was new boss Medina suddenly taking the view that Jack may well have been right about everything all along.  Are you kidding me?

Debandada no elenco de ‘Law & Order: CI’

Segundo fontes do seriado, é de se esperar que os atores Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe e Eric Bogosia deixem a produção da franquia ao longo da nona temporada.

Julianne Nicholson deixou o programa na temporada passada, com isso, a esperança de Dick Wolf caem nos ombros de Jeff Goldblum, que entrou para o elenco fixo na última temporada, ao lado da atriz Saffron Burrows.

Kelly Rutherford, a Lily do seriado ‘Gossip Girl’, exibido pela CW, obeteve esta semana uma medida cautelar contra o ex-marido Daniel Giersch, segundo a revista People.

A atriz procurou a justiça depois que Giersch começou a seguir a atriz, sua mãe e a babá de seus filhos, além de seguidas ameaças.

O ex-casal briga pela disputa dos filhos desde 2008.

ABC prepara nova série policial

Depois de estrear ‘The Forgotten’, de Jerry Bruckheimer, ABC já prepara ‘Hopscotch’, cop show do produtor para a próxima temporada. O piloto está sendo escrito por Chris Levinson.

Os detalhes até aqui são poucos, mas parece se tratar de uma série de investigações de homicídios durante diversos dias não-consecutivos.

Detalhe curioso: Chris Levinson, o roteirista, é filho de Richard Levinson, produtor famoso por ter estabelecido o gênero na TV norte-americana com shows como ‘Columbo’ e ‘Murder, She Wrote’.

Gossip Girl da vida real

A CW encomendou a produção de um piloto de reality show sobre uma gossip girl da vida real. A emissora explorará a vida de jovem e rica Tinsley Mortimer, socialite de Manhattan. Mortimer é apontada pelos jornalistas de celebridades – e pela Nylon – como a “next big thing”.

A jovem também participou da season premiere da segunda temporada de ‘Gossip Girl’ e foi juri do programa ‘Fashion Show’, que vai ao ar no canal a cabo Bravo, nos EUA.

A demanda para este novo reality é de oito episódios de meia hora. A produção executiva é de Andrew Gassman e Mike Aho.

ABC estreia ‘FlashForward’

A ABC leva ao ar hoje a series premiere de ‘FlashForward’, piloto mais guardado da fall season norte-americana.

Simon Cowell e Fox querem versão americana de ‘X Factor’

A Fox está prestes a fechar um contrato milionário com Simon Cowell, que além de juri do ‘American Idol’, é criador do show de talentos britânico ‘X Factor’.

Já faz tempo que o jurado demonstra vontade de trazer sua cria inglesa para a tv norte-americana, mas seu contrato com ‘American Idol’ sempre o impediu.

Mas agora parece que o desejo é mútuo e as primeiras conversas já aconteceram. A idéia da Fox é ter uma versão US de ‘American Idol’ para a temporada 2011-2012 e assim, segurar Cowell como jurado de Idol até a mesma época.

Em movimento ousado, CW encomenda temporadas completas

A CW parece determinada a ganhar a confiança de seus fãs (tem alguém ai?). Na noite de ontem, em atitude surpreendente, a emissora encomendou novos episódios ao drama ‘One Tree Hill’ e as novatas ‘Vampire Diaries’ e ‘Melrose Place’.

O canal aberto havia encomendado apenas 13 episódios do drama veterano, mas agora com o anúncio, a temporada completa está confirmada. Quanto a Diaries, a aposta é grande, já que o novo drama teen-vampiresco teve a premiere mais assistida da história da CW.

Já Melrose, até aqui foi só decepção. Mas os executivos parecem estar com paciência, assim como tiveram a mesma paciência com a turma de ‘90210′. E desde que Heather Locklear confirmou sua volta a Melrose, o futuro parece menos tenebroso – será?

NBC compra ‘The Mountain’

A NBC foi até o Canadá atrás de novidades. A emissora acaba de adquirar ‘The Mountain’, co-produção canadense sobre uma mulher que se muda com sua família para as montanhas, onde herdou uma cabana de seu suposto falecido avô.

As filmagens começam no mês de outubro em Montreal e Doug Barr, que escreveu o piloto, também acumulará a função de diretor e produtor executivo, ao lado de Joel Rice e Jeff Grant.

O piloto possui duas horas de duração e tem o formato de telefilme. Ele serve como cartão de visitas para um eventual sinal verde da emissora para produzir um seriado.

FX prepara série animada para 2010

A FX está prestes a se aventurar nas animações. O canal a cabo norte-americano fechou parceria com a empresa Shine Intl. para produzir uma animação com previsão de estréia para 2010.

‘Archer’, título do projeto, será um thriller animado sobre espiões. No elenco estão Jon Benjamin, na voz do espião-mestre Sterling Archer, Jessica Walter, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell e Judy Greer.

JJ Abrams prepara nova comédia para Fox

A Bad Robot, produtora de JJ Abrams (criador de ‘Alias’ e ‘Lost’) fechou um contrato com a Fox para escrever uma nova comédia para o canal. Mike Markowitz foi chamado para roteirizar a idéia.

O show ainda não tem título e detalhes sobre a trama estão sendo mantidos em segredo por Abrams, que produzirá a comédia. O que se sabe até aqui é que o programa é descrito como uma “comédia médica”. Algo na linha de Scrubs, talvez?

Lembrando que não é a primeira vez que a Bad Robot se aventura nas comédias. Em 2006-2007, a produtora de JJ produziu ‘What About Brian’.

Betty White como ela mesma em ‘30 Rock’

Betty White aparecerá como ela mesmo em ‘30 Rock’. Famosa por ser uma das Golden Girls, White gravará sua participação na semana que vem.  Segundo Tina Fey, agora o seriado corre atrás de Meryl Streep, Paul McCartney, Robert Pattinson e Justin Timberlake.

Novidades no elenco de ‘Damages’

Spielberg prepara série para Showtime

O diretor e produtor Steven Spielberg prepara nova série para o canal a cabo norte-americano Sowtime. O show deverá narrar os bastidores de uma produção musical da Broadway. O bacana aqui é que o seriado acompanhará a pré-produção, produção e pós-produção da peça. E após isso, a peça sai da telinha e entra em cartaz de verdade.

Lost

A ABC liberou nesta terça-feira, 22/09, o título do quarto episódio da sexta temporada de ‘Lost’: ‘The Substitute’. Lembrando que os outros três primeiros já tinham vazado: ‘LA X’ (S06E01 e S06E02) e ‘What Kate Does’ (S06E03, lembrando que o nome do S02E09 é ‘What Kate Did’).

Geralmente, os quartos episódios das temporadas de ‘Lost’, são focados em… Locke. Agora, volte pro nome do episódio. Faz sentido, não?

Heather Locklear está de volta a Melrose Place

Heather Locklear, a eterna Amanda Woodward, vai voltar para o remake de ‘Melrose Place’. No começo do ano, a atriz descartou reprisar o papel que a lançou ao estrelado, mas parece que Locklear mudou de idéia.

O anúncio foi feito esta semana pela The CW e a primeira participação da atriz no programa deve acontecer no dia 17 de novembro. Detalhes de sua volta não foram divulgados – há especulações de que ela seria relacionada a Ella -, mas sabe-se que ela voltará a morar no prédio em que habitou na versão original do seriado.

CBS encomenda novos pilotos

A CBS está produzindo dois novos dramas. Um do roteirista Peter Tolan (‘Rescue Me’) e outro de Ed Redlich (‘Without a Trace’). Os dois são produções da Sony Pictures TV e possuem grandes multas caso seus pilotos não sejam produzidos. O projeto – sem título – de Tolan é sobre um professor excêntrico que desvenda crimes. O piloto está sendo escrito em quatro mãos, as outras duas são de Michael Wimer.

Já ‘The Remember’, de Redlich, é focado em uma detetive de Nova York que tem a habilidade de lembrar absolutamente tudo que passa por sua vida. Sarah Timberman e Carl Beverly são os outros dois nomes atrelados ao piloto.

25 séries que fracassaram

A Entertainment Weekly fez uma matéria SUPER bacana com as 25 séries mais hypadas da história que deram errado. Todos os anos diversas produções atingem o status de hit antes mesmo de sua estréia, e o que se vê depois é um fracasso de crítica e audiência que gera um cancelamento muitas vezes prematuro.

The Good Wife

Glee

A série ‘Glee’ mal estreou e já recebeu uma temporada completa da Fox. A emissora norte-americana encomendou outros 9 episódios, além dos 13 planejados inicialmente. Portanto, a demanda total é de 22 episódios. ‘Glee’ é uma criação de Ryan Murphy, que já nos trouxe ‘Nip/Tuck’.

Presença de Obama ontem no Letterman deu ao talk show sua maior audiência em quatro anos, audiência 195% maior que a de Conan O’Brien.

To Save A Network in Five Easy Steps

It’s clear by the chaos that ensued Memorial Day weekend that NBC is in total disarray.  In the span of two months the network went from resigning former NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly for more four years to having his big new hit Heroes decline hugely, his new fall line up panned and hiring self made TV mogul and wunderkind producer Ben Silverman of The Office, Ugly Betty, and Who Wants to Be Millionaire fame.

Silverman is a unique cat, he’s giving up a much more lucrative and relatively blame free post as a independent producer for the high risk/high reward world of modern day network television where all four major networks presidents have changed in the past 4 years. He’s taking a major chance at height of his powers for a once in a lifetime shot to be, as his reported idol Brandon Tartikoff was, the man who saved NBC.

Therefore I address this article to Mr. Silverman in particular. He’s taking on a monumental task in remaking the network, which has struggled to understand its place and its-self since Jerry, Elaine, George and the now infamous Kramer, were all locked up at the end of Seinfeld’s run. So Mr. Silverman for your own sake and the sake of all of us who grew up watching Must See TV here’s how to save NBC in five not always easy steps.

1. STOP rehashing Cable TV.

Its cable TV for a reason, cable shows is for small intense audiences and passive channel flippers. The networks degrade themselves every summer by hauling out cable ready reality shows for the cheapest laughs and weak melodrama.

No more Real Wedding Crashers or Thank God You’re Here or another NBC creation the upcoming Age of Love– enough! They’re nice niche shows that would be perfect for a Bravo or a VH1 but not on the network of Seinfeld and Cosby.

That’s not to say that network television can’t be a place for niche and reality TV or the next incarnation of NBC. But when you do use this type of programming please think bigger. NBC’s Deal or No Deal and Fox’s American Idol clearly say there’s a large audience for the genre.

The beauty of Idol or Deal is that the idea is not only big and engrossing but also inclusive. They’re not made for the 18 – 49 demo or some small niche they’re what network television should be a large tent where all potential viewers are embraced.

The massive hits of recent years ABC’s Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, and Fox’s House have one thing in common they they’re not only scripted but appeal to a wide audience with their diverse characters both racially and age wise. NBC should follow that model. Worry about niches later… viewers now.

2. Niches don’t bring riches.

The highest rated niche dramas i.e. Lost don’t have long shelf lives after they’ve reached their apexes. So NBC and no other network should bet its future on the long-term success of Sci-Fi, even if they’re Heroes. I’d admit that Heroes: Origins a mini-series is a good idea but the Bionic Woman!

NBC should think broader and bigger and outside of its own walls. As tempting as it is to rehash your biggest ideas one must approach it like CBS did with the original CSI as a lead in to Without A Trace or ABC did with Desperate Housewives as a lead in to Grey’s Anatomy. Neither show was a clear carbon copy but they were clever takes that appeal to a similar audience. NBC’s new programs Bionic, Chuck where a man learns he’s a super-hero and the Quantum Leap/Sliders clone Journeyman are clear knockoffs of the originals. A note to all TV programmers YOUR VIEWERS AREN’T STUPID!

The network should continue to follow Reilly’s motto, which was coined by another former NBC president Fred Silverman, “First be the Best, than be First.” Reilly developed truly unique programs like Friday Night Lights, 30 Rock and The Office but sadly these programs because their small audiences aren’t network cornerstones. It’s clear the network needs more Heroes like successes but programs like 30 Rock are sorely needed and should be nurtured by network television. Its shows like these who serve as precursors for larger hits down the line.

3. Cut the Fat.

In recent weeks Donald Trump has whined that his show the Apprentice didn’t make the fall schedule and wasn’t even announced as a replacement and I say huzzah! Make Trump the first of a long list of exoduses.

ABC went through a similar period after the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire bubble burst in 2001, its schedule was depleted lacked an identity and hits. ABC went through a painful purge for several years but it was one that paved the way for Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Grey’s Anatomy. NBC must do the same.

As much as I adore Scrubs if the state of network comedy was 10% better it would have been canceled two years ago. ER was over the hill five years ago and has finally relented its time slot in recent years, put it out of its misery. Despite the advertising the fluffy music video like dramedy Las Vegas was never a hit and should be thrown in the trash.

NBC should also learn not to overuse its assets like Deal or Law and Order. Idol is special because it airs once a week; NBC not only airs Deal two or three times a week but twice a night on CNBC. Why watch the first run if you can easily see repeats of it without buying the on i-tunes or online which is still a herky-jerky stream for most of us.

Cutting the fat will also help the creative process opening new time slots for new shows. The only way to generate new hits is to approach as ABC has develop a dozen new shows and find slots for them all. Some will fail others will be the next Heroes. You don’t go about finding a new hit comedy by developing one comedy. Which leads me to my next point…

4. Make comedy a priority.

Reinstating Must See TV Thursday was a good start, but its just that a start. Programming 101 says if your opponents are winning going one way you go the other. Sitcoms are still strong in syndication and original ones are popping up all over cable. The audience is still there. NBC was in shambles in the early 80’s when the sitcom was last declared dead once before… and than there was Cosby.

Cosby was an alternate universe when compared to the shows like “All in the Family” who dominated before them. The success of Ben Silverman’s ABC dramady Ugly Betty and its precursors like ABC’s Desperate Housewives and Fox’s Ally McBeal say that maybe hour-long comedies are the direction to go in. Not the reality comedy hybrid direction. Every reality hybrid show such as the Punk’d rip off NBC’s The Real Wedding Crashers and CBS’s Fired have been abject failures both creatively and ratings wise.

The network is already in position to lead a comedy renaissance with The Office and My Name is Earl. Now the network as all the networks needs are broader bigger hits.

Silverman who scoured the world for Millionaire, The Office, Ugly Betty could be the perfect guy to do just that. Which brings me to my final tip…

5. Lose the Mandates.

His predecessor Kevin Reilly was handcuffed by NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker’s mandate that the network should stop programming dramas and comedies at the 8:00 hour. Zucker favored a more cost effective programming choice.

Besides ratings, cost is clearly driving forces behind a decade of unscripted programming, but it seems silly to depend shows so that go out of style quicker than I-pods especially at the expense comedies.

Comedies work best early in the evening… i.e. I Love Lucy, All in the Family to NBC’s own Cosby, Mad About You, Friends etc, all of which were 8PM shows at their height. Plus most “unscripted shows ” make poor lead-ins for dramas and comedies, just ask everyone not named House on Fox’s schedule. Sitcoms are a tried and true response.

It’s only common sense to think that surrendering a literally a third of your lineup to reality shows is insanity. Furthermore so is airing countless Law and Order reruns and Dateline repeats on Saturdays.

It’s clear that the demo-crazed networks don’t want the audience available on Friday and Saturday nights but NBC doesn’t have that luxury anymore. They’re buried in fourth place and must make those nights watchable again.

It was only ten years ago that Jack Bauer’s godfather, Chuck Norris starred CBS’ Walker Texas Ranger. Walker was a top 20 show and in this day of depressed Neilsons it would be a top ten program. While sheer brutality for brutality’s sake seems not to work on network TV i.e. NBC’s The Black Donnelleys and CBS’s Smith, but rogues like Bauer, House, CSI’s Gil Grissom, CSI: Miami’s Horatio Caine are among TV’s biggest stars. NBC could capitalize on the Friday and Saturday collapses on the other networks.

So Mr. Silverman you must demand that these mandates be dropped in favor of a more aggressive schedule, particularly on Thursdays which account for approximately a third of the networks’ ad revenue. It was aggression and creativity by NBC that made Thursdays TV’s most important night and the same that catapulted CBS past NBC and ABC past CBS more recently.  It will take the same to take back the night and all of prime time. If these tactics or similar aren’t taken by NBC, the network could be looking at a repeat life of Reilly before we know it.

Postscript: Ben Silverman failed miserably. NBC is in worse shape then it has ever been. Silverman left the network in disgrace this summer. The success or failure of the defining move of his tenure bringing Jay Leno to prime time will likely shape how he’s remembered.

I thought that More4 had given up on this – I almost had.

It’s been nearly a year since they showed the season 6 finale, and I’d checked the Thursday night schedules for months to no avail.  However, they blindsided me by quietly shifting the show to a Monday and starting the final season a couple of weeks ago.  Thanks to unpopculter Red pointing out it was back, I’ve now watched episodes 1 and 2.  So how were they? 

That’s a complicated question.  There comes a point where any long-running procedural series gets tired and has to shake things up.  Even a perfectly serviceable mystery of the week is not going to be enough to sustain interest if it’s the 120th perfectly serviceable mystery of the week that I’ve watched - I’m going to need a little something extra to keep me caring; I need a bit of change and a bit of character development or things get boring. 

Unfortunately for WAT, over the past couple of seasons, “character development” has meant sidelining the likeable Martin and Danny, beefing up the irritating Elena’s role, and turning Jack into one of the most self-centred, loathsome ”heroes” on tv.  Even the odd lead story for Vivian and Sam has always ended up coming back to Jack, and the show’s likeability has suffered because of it. 

So what about this season?  Well, things are shaking up some more.  Jack’s been demoted, new boss Medina (Steven Weber, playing the kind of role he can do in his sleep now, but playing it well) clearly wants rid of him, and the team are caught in the middle.  So finally, Jack is being made to face some consequences. 

But how much has really changed? The first episode was better than the second but neither mystery was new enough or interesting enough to stand out from the scores of episodes we’ve already seen, so the show’s main characters have to entertain us instead.  And because of that, the fundamental problem for me is still the same – it’s Jack. 

It’s not enough to have a couple of cute lines for Martin or stupid gushing over a baby-cam from new mum Sam, if in the end it’s still all about Jack.  Whether Jack stays, how Jack feels, what Jack wants to do – Argh.  I don’t care.  I can’t root for a central character I can’t stand.  Give me a story about someone I can love, show, or it’s just 40 minutes of me rolling my eyes at the tv.

Because it’s the last season, (and because of the hint of an actual storyline for Martin) I’ll stick with the show for now, but don’t get too comfy, WAT – More 4 may not have, but I may still give up on you yet.

Na maior vibe Rolling Stones, Supernatural está finalmente de volta!! Yeaaaay! Na quinta-feira, foi ao ar, nos EUA, o primeiro episódio da quinta temporada Sympathy For The Devil. *cuidado, pode conter spoilers*

O episódio não decepcionou, na minha opinião. Foi Supernatural no seu melhor: ação, drama, humor, medo e Dean com todo seu sarcamos que eu amo!

E foi ótimo saber que Jensen Ackles continua lindo, maravilhoso (gente, eu amo esse homi) e totalmente yummy! Claro que Jared Padalecki não é de se jogar fora, hahaha, mas é que o Jensen, além de lindo, tem um charme irresistível! E eu também (eu e mais ziguebilhões de pessoas) acho o Misha Collins tão fofinho! Fiquei bege ao saber que ele tinha feito um episódio de Without A Trace \o/ – tão diferente (estava loiro!).

Por um momento, pensei que Bobby (Jim Beaver, na foto acima) tinha virado história! Ótimo saber que ele está bem! E também curti o final, que foi meio ‘momento drama’, mas ótimo no bom sentido. Eu quero ver os irmãos Winchester se estranhando um pouco (mas óbvio que também quero vê-los best friends forever no final, rsrsrsrsrs)!

E por fim, um off-topic total – partindo do ótimo ao nada a ver: final da novela Caminho das Índias (kkkkkkkkkk)! Sim, eu assisti (eu e mais ziguebilhões de pessoas de novo).

Para variar, final de novela é sempre meio cagado, na minha opinião. TUDO se resolve no último capítulo e todos vivem felizes para sempre (neste caso, inclusive uma vilã). Tirando isso, a novela teve vários momentos nada a ver:

1. Raj voltando e se encontra com o Pandit (sei lá eu se assim que se escreve) e pergunta: “o que está acontecendo?” Ponto. A cena acaba e fica no ar o que o cara falou pra Raj – que depois já aparece no Ganges – eu fiquei com mega cara de cu!
2. Márcio Garcia deu adeus aos seus dias de ator para ser figurante, minha gente!!! Não teve nem fala o pobre coitado! E pensar que, a priori, ele era protagonista! E não a toa ele não deu as caras na festa de confraternização (querendo causar climão).
3. O que o Shankar foi fazer da vida dele!? Eu sempre achei que a gente podia entender uma novela inteira no último capítulo, mas “duneydi” (= do nada) o cara sei lá, decidi vagar pelo mundo (aquela era a muralha da China!?), eu até cheguei a pensar que ele ia se afogar no Ganges!
4. Finalmente a velha (dadi) deu um sorriso – tinha que ser no último capítulo, né, galera!?
5. Por que causa, motivo, razão ou circunstância, alguém vai editar um documentário num restaurante e naquele exato momento um produtor de Hollywood passa, dá uma bizoiada e contrata? Haja sorte, hein?
6. Momento que Maya e Raj se reencontram: sumiu todo mundo da cena, a montagem da Maya ‘trocando’ de roupa foi escrotamente mal montada (alow, Grobo, arrume uma staff pra efeitos especiais melhor porque eu nunca vou me esquecer do péssimo incêndio no último capítulo de Alma Gêmea) e muito “oi? como assim?” De novo, duneydi, a Maya passa do branco ao colorido na beira de um rio… coisas que nem Freud explica!
7. Alguém grávida… que inédito!
8. Por fim, o momento mais tosco de todos os capítulos de novela que eu já assisti na vida, incluindo as mexicanas: Ramiro: “eu tô que nem o Zeca Pagodinho, eu deixo a vida me levar” (!!!!!!!) Só faltou o Murilo responder: “é.. vida leva eu…” ……. *cri, cri, cri, cri* – é rir pra não chorar!

Enfim, a novela teve seus momentos bons…… *tentando lembrar*….. como o final do Tarso e da Tônia! Casalzinho simpático esse! O da Suri – ri a valer dela! E ver Rodrigo Lombardi, mesmo que por 5 minutos (acho que somando todas as cenas, deve dar isso), sempre vale a pena, fala aí!?

Desde o início de agosto, séries consagradas exibem suas novas temporadas e emissoras lançam novas produções, que já estreiam despontando como novidades no inóspito e disputado cenário do entretenimento televisivo.

Como já é conhecido, o gerenciador desta, por assim dizer, miscelânea midiática é um assumido e compulsivo fã das séries americanas e repudia qualquer hipócrita manifestação contrária, de famigerados arautos da razão, a essa predileção.

A exemplo do ano passado, quando expus minhas impressões acerca desse próspero período e descrevi algumas de minhas preferências, tecerei comentários sobre as  séries que acompanho religiosamente.

Greek, 3ª temporada (ABC Family) – Acompanho, entusiasticamente, a saga de Casey, Rusty e cia desde o início. Greek fora produzida para preencher buraco de programação, no canal ABC Family. No entanto, com um roteiro afiado e maroto, embora um tanto pueril, a série conquistou seu espaço e cativou um público-alvo específico. Para tanto, os responsáveis pelo seriado utilizaram-se de fórmulas consagradas – por vezes, batida – no intuito de estabelecer um padrão temático e constituir fiéis seguidores. A única ressalva que tenho em relação à essa terceira temporada, é o fato de a trama ter perdido sua vilã-mor, a ardilosa Frannie. Os roteiristas terão que se desdobrar para darem continuidade aos inusitados conflitos, outrora, ocasionados pela referida antagonista. No mais, a série tem tudo para emplacar mais uma bem-sucedida temporada.

Gossip Girl, 3ª temporada (CW) – Assim como já explicitei em algumas ocasiões, repito: Gossip Girl é a malhação de luxo dos nova-iorquinos. O roteiro é absurdamente superficial e, às vezes, de uma ingenuidade risível. Contudo, acredito que o glamour e os mistérios que circundam a vida dos personagens contribuem para que o congênere do seriado global se sobressaia em alguns aspectos. A famigerada temática de idas e vindas de casais, que, em tese, nasceram para ficarem juntos (Dan e Serena; Chuck e Blair), sempre proporciona bons momentos, além das armações dos autoproclamados antagonistas. A expectativa da temporada fica por conta do surgimento do meio-irmão de Dan e Serena.

House, 6ª temporada (FOX)– Esta, certamente, está inclusa no meu Top Five de séries. É incrível a capacidade de David Shore e dos demais roteiristas deste aclamado seriado de se reinventar a cada nova temporada, reservando, sempre, situações absolutamente inesperadas. Falar da interpretação de Hugh Laurie é redundância, a julgar pela quantidade de indicações em Emmys e Grammys que ele conquistou. Na última temporada, havia o receio pela substituição da equipe do Dr. House, no entanto, o terrificante, degradante e genial processo seletivo imposto por House pulverizou qualquer preocupação acerca da troca de subalternos. Ao contrário, a modificação revitalizou a história e deu novo ritmo à trama. O único percalço fora a súbita saída do Kutner (Kal Penn), que, para os que ainda desconhecem, debandou da série em função de compromissos políticos assumidos com a gestão Obama. A despeito da próxima temporada, muitas surpresas aguardam o séquito de fanáticos seguidores do seriado, a começar pela estadia de House em uma clínica psiquiátrica.

How I Met Your Mother, 5ª temporada (CBS) – Atualmente, esta é a minha série de comédia predileta, ao lado de 30 Rock. É impossível não se entregar às desventuras de Ted Mosby para encontrar a mãe de seus filhos e às inapeláveis, por vezes rascantes, encrencas que seus amigos Marshall, Robin, Lily e Barney se metem. Em sua quinta temporada, parece que finalmente contemplaremos os decisivos momentos que culminarão no esperado encontro da mulher que se casará com Tedy e, com ele, terá dois filhos.

Brothers & Sisters, 4ª temporada (ABC) – Atualmente, esta atração é, sem sombra de dúvida, a minha predileta. É simplesmente impossível não se sensibilizar diante do carisma que emana naturalmente da família Walker. Sally Field está sensacional como matriarca de uma gigantesca e pródiga prole. Seus cinco filhos, todos eles com características absurdamente únicas, proporcionam momentos de descontração, drama, comédia e suspense, sempre mantendo uma verossimilhança assustadora com os hábitos familiares. Em dados momentos, a comunhão dos personagens é tamanha, que facilmente somos transportados a um plano no qual, ilusoriamente, pensamos que eles realmente fazem parte de uma mesma família. A depender da sua situação emocional, é provável que, em algum momento desta série, você já tenha ansiado ter uma mãe tal como a Nora; uma astuta irmã, como a Kitty; ou cálida, como a Sarah; ou um perspicaz, como o Kevin. Enfim, sou fã incondicional desta brilhante produção e faço votos de que sua vida útil se estenda por muitos e produtivos anos.

Californication, 3ª temporada (Showtime) – Aguardo ansiosamente – quase em cólicas – pela terceira temporada desta série. Com um roteiro sagaz, ágil e despudorado, Californication é uma das séries mais inovadoras da atualidade. É inevitável não torcer pelo protagonista, o escritor Hank Moody (David Duchovny), ante as agruras impostas pela vida em função de decisões equivocadas. Todos os personagens são essencialmente peculiares e marcantes. Becca, a filha de Hank; Karen, a ex; Charlie, o agente; Mia, a ninfeta; e Marcy, mulher de Charlie. Esta nova fase mostrará o dia a dia de pai (Hank) e filha (Becca), agora, morando juntos, já que a mãe, Karen, foi para Nova York.

Desperate Housewives, 6ª temporada (ABC) – A última temporada terminou de forma eletrizante, com a morte de Edie, a volta de Susan e Mike, a derrocada de Dave, a nova gravidez de Lynette Scavo e muito mais. São premissas auspiciosas que permitem que vislumbremos uma nova etapa em Wisteria Lane, repleta de situações inusitadas, dramas, comédia, surpresas. A exemplo do roteiro inventivo de House, Desperate Housewives adentra à sua sexta temporada com fôlego de sobra e muitas histórias para se explorar. Mais uma vez, certamente, seremos presenteados com um show de interpretação das quatro protagonistas deste seriado, que também habita a lista do meu Top Five.

Dexter, 4ª temporada (Showtime) – Como um serial-killer reage ante a paternidade? Esta é a pergunta que todos os fãs de Dexter estão se fazendo no momento, às vésperas de a quarta temporada inaugurar os trabalhos. Provavelmente este será o mote que norteará as ações da nova fase de Dexter, uma série instigante e envolvente, haja vista a dose de tensão e suspense que permeia todas as situações. O elenco é afiadíssimo e Michael C. Hall incorpora o protagonista de forma visceral. A depender da situação, é quase impossível cerrar os olhos durante um episódio sob risco de se perder algum detalhe determinante para os rumos da trama.

The Simpsons, 21ª temporada (FOX) – Tenho sido uma ovelha desgarrada deste decano das séries. Mas, faço questão de ressaltar, ainda compartilho da ideia de vitaliciedade a esta sensacional produção.

Nip/Tuck, 6ª temporada (FX) – Acompanho Nip Tuck desde o início. Assisti a todas as cinco temporadas e, portanto, posso afirma com propriedade que esta série descambou para o lado circense (ridículo). Os dramas e tragédias se potencializaram de tal modo que se tornaram cômicos. Os inesperados destinos de Sean e Cristian desagradaram a todos – sem falar da Julia. Não é que a série tenha perdido o fôlego, mas, sim, o fio da meada. Até pouco tempo atrás, considerava-a inovadora por explorar temas intocados, porém, agora, para mim, ela não passa de mais uma produção banal que aborda questões superficiais, sem a menor importância.

30 Rock, 4ª temporada (NBC) – Destaco dois pontos principais desta série genial e, por vezes, incompreendida: o roteiro e os atores. O texto é de uma primazia e agilidade inquestionável, com sacadas atuais e sagazes. A atuação de todo o elenco é impecável – diria impagável. Há uma sintonia singular entre todos. A relação entre Liz e Jack é indescritivelmente cômica. Os demais personagens compõem uma confraria de humor extremamente refinado: Tracy é hilário; a Jena, indefectível; e o Kenneth, surreal. No seu terceiro ano, 30 Rock continuará a exibir as investidas de Jack em sua mesopotâmica missão de ascender ao cargo máximo da NBC; as peripécias da vida privada de Liz Lemon; e as mazelas da intrépida trupe do mais improvável programa de TV.

Uma pena, pois suas histórias são envolventes, intrigantes e geram incontáveis expectativas acerca do futuro do Intersect, da relação de Chuck com Sarah e das mazelas vivenciadas na Buy More. Nesse novo ano, a apreensão dos fãs da série reside em dois pontos: quais serão os desdobramentos das novas habilidades adquiridas pelo personagem principal; e se essa será será a derradeira temporada da série, uma vez que seus produtores já deram mostras de que não estão satisfeitos com o desempenho da produção em termos de audiência.

Weeds, 6ª temporada – Sem data confirmada – Comecei a acompanhá-la há pouco, no entanto, já reuni subsídios suficientes para constatar de que se trata de uma série imperdível. A temática é inovadora – rompe uma série de tabus e paradigmas, por tocar em um assunto normalmente posto de lado em sociedades permeadas pela hipocrisia moral (maconha). A protagonista Nancy é apaixonante e seus complexos filhos, encantadores.

Hung, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada – Atualmente, Hung está próxima do final de sua temporada inaugural. À primeira vista, a série é aviltante; traz para os nossos lares um tema árido, nem um pouco frugal, de difícil absorção. Porém, com o desenrolar da trama, o telespectador acaba desenvolvendo uma grande empatia com o personagem principal, Richard. A despeito da premissa inicial do seriado, que, para os desavisados, pode soar como pornográfica, os roteiristas conduzem a questão da exploração do dote fálico do protagonista de maneira sutil e bem real. Portanto, não há motivos para temer possíveis cenas cujo mote lascivo possa ferir os princípios de ditos puritanos.

True Blood, 3ª temporada – Sem data confirmada – Como abordar a temática de vampiros sem descambar para o ridículo, a fanfarronice e a bizarrice? Longe de ser a panacéia das produções artísticas desse segmento, True Blood surgiu com uma poesia contemporânea inserida nesse contexto de vampiros. Há momentos, sim, em que há certa apelação, mas, nunca, de forma ridícula. A interpretação de Anna Paquin, como Sookie, é visceral, intensa e extremamente convincente. Há de se ressaltar, também, a peculiar beleza da referida protagonista. Agora, sei que serei alvo de críticas, Stephen Moyer, como Bill, deixa muito a desejar, sobretudo em cenas que demandam maior expressividade e elevadas doses de drama. Falo isso mesmo levando em conta que o personagem de um vampiro milenar deve ser de uma impassibilidade marmórea quase inexorável, mas, ainda assim, Stephen se perde na tentativa de transparecer uma aura austera. Os demais personagens dão um verdadeiro show: Jason, Sam, Tara, Lafayette, entre outros. A série está no auge de sua segunda temporada e, portanto, seria incoerente de minha parte projetar a terceira, sendo que muitas incógnitas ainda estão por se descortinar.

Das novidades do primeiro semestre deste ano, a única que aparentemente não emplacou foi: Mental. O que não representa nenhuma surpresa, já que, assim como mencionei em outra oportunidade, a série já iniciara suas atividades com uma mácula: roteiro batido – clínica, médicos, casos quase impossíveis, destemida equipe, doutor rompedor de paradigmas e eticamente questionável.

Para finalizar este imenso post, gostaria de acrescentar a essa pródiga lista de produções, a série The Diary of Anne Frank, produzida pela BBC de Londres. Dividida em cinco emocionantes episódios, a trama é baseada no diário da menina judia Anne Frank que, ao lado de sua família e outros judeus, viveu reclusa por dois anos num sótão de um prédio, na Holanda, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Durante essa estadia, Anne compôs um diário, com esmero e destreza gramatical digna de grandes escritores, contendo relatos sobre o dia a dia naquele lugar e as impressões que tinha acerca dos outros e das relações que matinha. Após deflagrado o esconderijo e Anne e sua família serem levadas a campos de concentração, o diário fora encontrado por uma amiga e, posteriormente, publicado, tornando-se um Best-Seller, traduzido para diversos idiomas. Na série, é espantosa semelhança da garota que interpreta Anne com a real. O elenco, correto e irrepreensível, consegue traduzir perfeitamente o terror e o pânico os quais a família fora submetida à época.

Did anyone get the license plate of that truck? If so, send it to Ozzy, so the challenge powerhouse of SURVIVOR: MICRONESIA — FANS VS. FAVORITES will know what hit him! Ozzy had the hidden immunity idol in his back pocket, but despite some unease decided not to play it because he was so confident that Jason was going to be booted as part of a separate double-cross. In order for the group to win a fancy feast, everyone promised not to vote out Jason if he allowed Parvati to win immunity — a promise no one intended to keep. However, Cirie organized a blindside for the record books. As Ozzy chortled during Tribal Council, secure that Jason’s head was on the chopping block, I wondered what look would replace that cockiness. It turned out to be one of those looks that could kill! When the final tally was read, juror Elizawas apoplectic with shock and joy while Ozzy stared daggers at his former teammates. No doubt the newest juror will not be voting for ex-allies Parvati andAmanda to win a million bucks. Speaking of my girl Parvati, if she is really the strategist she thinks she is, she will target Cirie next, because that woman is reallypulling the strings in Dabu tribe. And one final point about the hidden immunity idol: Cool guys have to stop finding it, because they believe they’re too cool to need it. Dream on, guys. 

Dreams and flashbacks held sway in the 10 o’clock hour. ER began with Neela dreaming that she was parading through the ER naked. It wasn’t going to get better than Parminder Nagra flashing a little skin any time soon, so I flipped over to the season finale of ELI STONE, where the title character was in a coma after having surgery to treat the aneurysm that may or may not be responsible for the colorful visions (does Eli know GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Nikolas?) that dictate his missions from God — i.e., whom he will represent in court that week. The comatose Eli dreamed while other characters flashed back to memories of Eli. And, of course, WITHOUT A TRACE always features flashbacks to the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the missing person of the week. 

Last night I watched my first full episode of ER in years. One of the other staffers here at Weekly worships the show, and whenever he mentions it I say the exact same thing: “ER is still on?” Then we laugh, and I forget it’s on. This episode revolved around Neela working a double shift, so everybody kept saying to her, “You’re still here?” Which is the exact same dialogue I remember from season one — and this is, what, season 36? 46? Anyway, turned out Neela was especially morose because it was her birthday — she was 31 and unmarried, with no prospects. In other words, it was a story about a good-looking doctor whose frantic job leaves no time for a personal life. Same old, same old. So once again I ask: “ER is still on?”

Speaking of shows that are “still on,” DOCTOR WHO returns to Sci Fi tonight with “Voyage of the Damned,” the special Christmas episode that aired in Great Britain this past December. The 90-minute installment sets sail at 8:30, and leads into next week’s premiere of the rebooted series’ fourth season. DOCTOR WHO is probably my favorite series of all time, so as a true fan I know this is actually the fantasy series’ 30th season. It bowed way back in 1963 (in glorious black-and-white) and lasted until 1989, when it was put on extended hiatus. After a 1996 American TV-movie failed to sell as a pilot for a U.S. series, it languished until being revived back home in England in 2005. The title character is an alien traveler called “the Doctor” (not “Doctor Who”) who has a ship — which is disguised to appear as a British police kiosk, but is bigger on the inside — that allows him to travel anywhere in the universe as well as backward and forward in time; he can go anywhere, anywhen. The Doctor also has the ability to regenerate his body when near death, essentially transforming into a new man. Using this ingenious conceit, different actors have played the title role over the decades. The current star, David Tennant, portrays the 10th incarnation of the Doctor, and he assays the cosmic wanderer with a barely suppressed manic energy that makes the boyish-looking Doctor seem like a 903-year-old hyperactive teenager. Check it out tonight. (Also check Sci Fi tonight at 7 for the WHO spin-off THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES, then flip to BBC America tomorrow night at 9 for the second-season finale of the latest WHO spin-off, TORCHWOOD.)

AMERICAN IDOL: Well, the results show proved how easy this IDOL stuff is: a quick look at my earlier entry shows I correctly predicted the bottom three — and that was my first episode ever! I’m a natural! I was being kind when I compared Michael Johns‘ performance to bad karaoke. However, today I wake up to see cries that Michael’s ouster made jaws drop. What? Did we all watch the same performance? He was awful. It was pretty funny the way Ryan teased him (and viewers) for a second with the prospect that he might not be sent packing, only to crush him. Going forward, my program listings are apparently defective because after three nights in a row I don’t see IDOL on Friday’s schedule. How can that be?

SURVIVOR: MICRONESIA — FANS VS. FAVORITES is my favorite unscripted competition (when THE AMAZING RACE isn’t on). Last night saw the much-anticipated merge, the beginning of individual immunity contests, and the first juror. Call me shallow, but I’m rooting for Parvati to win it all — and not just because her surname is Shallow. She’s well-positioned with alliances among the remaining players and she’s showing an aptitude for subtle strategy. Plus, okay, she’s purty. Last night’s installment featured an all-time classic moment: Eliza playing a phony immunity idol. Of course it didn’t protect her from being voted off the island (Jeff callously tossed the stick into the tribal council fire), but the gambit did expose what some suspected (and viewers already knew): Ozzy had found the real idol and substituted a fake (his smirking was priceless). Eliza acted like she had thrown herself on a grenade to protect her new tribemates, but that was one expensive blown opportunity. Still, she’s the first juror.

DON’T FORGET THE LYRICS? Uh, forget it!

CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION began with the body of a 4-year-old girl discovered in a cardboard box. Then Catherine helped autopsy her tiny, pajama-clad corpse. *click* Oh, look — the Yankees are playing!!!!

WITHOUT A TRACE touched on the evils of blogging among the youth of America. It’s about time some responsible show pointed out that these weirdo bloggers are just out of con… wait. That’s…that’s just not right. Don’t scapegoat responsible young adults with the drive and savvy (and attention span) to put their carefully-considered thoughts into words to share with the world. Yep, bloggers are the salt of the earth, I always say. Anyway, it turned out the real problem was a teenage girl who received a heart transplant from a 17-year-old boy killed by a drunk driver; she decided to meet the donor’s family. I guess that’s why organ donations are supposed to be anonymous.

Kabel1 sichert sich reihenweise die Austrahlsungsrechte an interessanten Serien. Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Without a Trace und Cold Case laufen bereits erfolgreich auf Kabel1.
Zukünftig werden dort auch 24, Lost, Terminator: S.C.C., Jericho, Castle, Dark Blue, Southland und Eleventh Hour zu sehen sein.

Für Serienfans dürfte Kabel1 dadurch noch deutlich interessanter geworden sein. Zeit also, den Sender etwas weiter vorn auf der Fernbedienung zu platzieren.

Desde o último post sobre a temporada 2008-2009 no meado de junho eram 33 séries contabilizadas, bom passado um mês além de temporadas antigas de séries que comecei a acompanhar, mais oito séries se juntam as 33, mas nada afetou a forma com que os reviews aqui serão feitos. Mais um balanço sairá no final de agosto e teremos o resultado definitivo do que será comentado aqui no blog, nessa temporada.
