I don’t think I’ve seen the words ‘cut out and keep‘ used in a digital sense lately. It’s an interesting reminder that people actually used to cut out and keep announcements of noteworthy events from newspapers and magazines not too long ago. I used to myself – but can’t remember the last time I ever did. 

I suppose the equivalent of that on a digital level is bookmarking.

Guus gaat dus niet naar het WK. Of in ieder geval niet als bondscoach van Rusland. Dat noopt een lezer van VI tot het insturen van een column over de globetrotterende Achterhoeker. Moraal van het verhaal: Guus heeft niet zoveel geluk. Komt mij bekend voor, dat verhaal!

De internationale voetbalfederatie FIFA heeft besloten dat Zuid-Afrika de openingswedstrijd van het WK in eigen land mag spelen. Het is na 2006 voor de tweede keer op rij dat het gastland deze eer ten dele valt. Voor 2006 was het bijna 4 decennia lang traditie dat de titelverdediger de openingswedstrijd mocht spelen.

Voor Zuid-Afrika betekent dit, dat het land automatisch ingedeeld wordt in groep A tijdens de loting op 4 december. De openingswedstrijd zal op 11 juni 2010 gespeeld worden in het gerenoveerde Soccer City Stadion in Johannesburg. Er bestaat een kans dat Bafana Bafana dat onder toeziend oog doet van de Amerikaanse president Barack Obama. Hij kreeg van FIFA-president Sepp Blatter een uitnodiging voor deze wedstrijd. Als de agenda van Obama het toelaat, zal hij dus één van de bijna 95.000 aanwezigen zijn.

Duitsland won in 2006 de openingswedstrijd van Costa Rica met 4-2. Of Zuid-Afrika blij moet zijn met recht om de openingswedstrijd is nog maar de vraag. Andere landen die dat recht hadden, toen nog als wereldkampioen, hadden het vaak erg zwaar in de openingswedstrijd. Zo verloor titelverdediger Frankrijk in 2002 verassend met 0-1 van Senegal. In 1990 ging regerend wereldkampioen Argentinië onderuit tegen Kameroen (0-1). vier jaar daarvoor kwam Italië niet verder dan 1-1 tegen bulgarije. Argentinië ging in 1982 met 0-1 onderuit tegen België. Duitsland bleef in 1978 steken op 0-0 tegen polen, en ook Brazilië kon niet scoren in de openingswedstrijd in 1974 tegen Joegoslavië.

De statistieken van de landen die recht hadden op de openingswedstrijd spreken tegen Zuid-Afrika, maar andere statistieken geven Bafana Bafana wel goede hoop. Het gastland van het WK werd maar liefst zes keer in de historie de wereldkampioen: Uruguay ‘30, italië ‘34, Engeland ‘66, Duitsland ‘74, Argentinië ‘78 en Frankrijk ‘98. Of deze statistieken ook maar iets zeggen over het komende WK en de kansen van Zuid-Afrika is de grote vraag. Ik hoop dat Zuid-Afrika gaat stunten, als ze de titel maar aan Nederland laten!

The release for Trespass was penned for this coming spring, and we will have more concrete date info for you as soon as it is confirmed with TASCHEN. Of course I hope the title will be even more necessary for “movement” then.

In Los Angeles, a couple exciting art shows up with Dan Witz, WK Interact, Barry McGee and Phil Frost. And the film opening of The Yes Men Fix the World at the Hammer Museum, which was great to see an enthused older demographic at. Plus The Art Street Journal working on Issue 5. In New York soon pending schedule, and crossing my fingers for final short afterward by Michael Taussig, while looking forward to updates from Martha Cooper, Aiko Nakagawa, Duke Riley, Bruce High Quality Foundation, and Hans Winkler projects among other inspirations and love!

Het bloed kruipt waar het niet kan gaan. Wéér ben ik erin gestonken. Wéér zijn we ‘der ingetuind’. Ik geef het maar eerlijk toe. Ik kan niet wachten tot het 11 juni 2010 is zodat de Oranje Leeuw weer eens kan brullen. Het WK voetbal komt er weer aan. Liep ik in de zomer van 2008 nog vloekend en tierend over straat, nu begint het hart langzaamaan weer te kloppen omdat er weer een toernooi aan zit te komen. Wéér een kans om die ene beker eens omhoog te tillen. Ook al was het maar voor één keer…De gouden beker voor het beste voetballand van de wereld. De borst kan worden natgemaakt. Dé droom. De kaarten zijn uit het dek gehaald en ze wachten tot begin december om geschud te worden door de FIFA-vogels. ‘De poule des doods’, waar wij ieder toernooi deel van uitmaken, heeft in mijn droom de volgende samenstelling: Brazilië, Duitsland, Argentinië, Portugal en Nederland. Alle landen waar we nog een kilo appels mee moeten schillen. Kom maar op. Nu weet de oplettende lezer dat er geen vijf maar vier landen in iedere groep zitten. In mijn droom zijn het er vijf. Met de vier bloedhonden in de groep die ik net heb opgenoemd kunnen we aan alle onzekerheid meteen een einde maken…Of misschien toch ook niet?

Laten we eens heel kort teruggaan in de tijd. De uitvinder van het ‘totaalvoetbal’ doet het namelijk niet zo best op eindrondes. De leeuw brult, gromt en als hij eindelijk bijt, dan bijt hij als een kitten. Probleem is echter dat wij nooit een slecht team hebben, maar dat wij nog nooit geluk hebben gehad tijdens een WK of EK. Nou, misschien de kopbal van Wim Kieft tegen de Ieren in 1988. Hoe die bal erin rolt is mij nog steeds een raadsel. De rest van de toernooien? Pech. Pech. Pech. Ik zal een paar tragische voorbeelden opnoemen…met heel veel pijn in mijn hart presenteer ik een lijstje van misselijkmakende momenten in de Nederlandse voetbalhistorie. De schwalbe in de WK-finale van ’74 waardoor we genaaid werden. Het verstoppen van de tenues en het omkopen van de officials en de complete organisatie door Argentinië in ’78. De bal op de paal van Robbie Rensenbrink in de laatste minuut in diezelfde finale van ’78. In de jaren ’90 hebben we nog meer penalty’s gemist dan Prins Bernhard dieren heeft doodgeschoten. In ’92, ’96, ’98 en 2000 vlogen we uit het toernooi dankzij een elfmeterdrama.

Ondanks bovenstaande decepties, huilpartijen, hartezeer, hartepijn en verhitte momenten heb ik goede hoop voor de zomer die ons te wachten staat. Zijn het niet de tranen van geluk die het doen als we een partij winnen? Als we scoren? De kroegen die ontploffen van geluk wanneer zeshonderd in Oranje lederhosen gehulde fans aan het springen zijn. Dat is het WK voetbal. Wij gaan los. Wij staan er altijd. Nu gaan we naar Zuid-Afrika. Op weg naar een nieuwe kans. De kans om de deceptie te voorkomen en om die ene grote droom waar te maken. Haal die kilo appels maar vast tevoorschijn wanneer we afreizen naar Afrika. Aanvalluh!

Deze week raakte bekend dat Rio de Janeiro de Olympische spelen van 2016 mag organiseren.

De Braziliaanse stad kreeg de voorkeur boven de andere kandidaten Tokio, Chicago en Madrid. Het is de allereerste keer dat de spelen in Zuid-Amerika georganiseerd worden. Dit zeer tegen de zin van Madrid die maar liefst 38 miljoen euro uitgaven om de Spelen te verwelkomen. Tevergeefs dus.

Naast het WK voetbal in 2014 haalt Brazilie nu dus ook een ander groot sportevenement binnen. Bij elke kandidatuur van een stad hoort ook een soort van promovideo. Die van Rio de Janeiro kan je hier bekijken.

Yesterday we had an opportunity to meet with Paul Colman, a planner here at WK. The subject of the talk was “What is Strategy”. It was really great to listen to him talk about the way he, and Wieden, approach strategy, see how it gets broken down, explain why it’s important and why it’s good when it works, and how much it hurts when it doesn’t. I definitely learned a lot, and I’m sure it was really helpful for those who don’t come from an advertising background, to be given insight into this important part of our creative process. I could go on forever about how interesting strategy is, but instead, I’d like to share a few snippets and soundbites from the meeting:

-With no strategy, it’s just art.

-Don’t count the people you reach, reach the people that count

-Don’t take what people are doing & just reflect it back – lead, inspire, guide them where to go.

-Find the truth, tell it delightfully

-Dig. Talk to real people

-You shouldn’t have to explain why it’s good. You should feel it.

-Don’t obsess over insights

-Strategy IS execution.

This talk just confirmed the importance of having a solid strategy. I think there is a lot of work that looks nice, and a lot of work that has strategy but no aesthetic. But the really great stuff is that middle overlay of the Venn diagram where the two meet, and all the parts together make the work stronger as a whole. It’s pretty with purpose, and aesthetic with intention. I remember back to the days of Visual Communications with Dr. Bill Ryan telling me to make every decision about my work intentionally. Our group is still growing and learning to work together as individuals, remote and London-based. But I think that we have the potential to nail our strategy with so many diverse ways of thinking to help us wrap our minds around it. I’m excited for this.

Last weekend I went to Portobello Road for the first time, and it was a TREASURE HUNTERS DREAM. There are so many interesting stalls with antique telephones, old cameras, sets of china, typecases and wood type, and everything in between. It’s probably one of my favorite markets to walk around in. They also have AMAZING crepes. I recommend strawberries with nutella on a cold day. AMAZING.

Komende zomer naar Zuid-Afrika?  Hierbij bedrijven bezoeken, 6 tot 24 studiepunten binnenhalen en bovenal het WK van dichtbij meemaken?

Voor ik hierover meer ga vertellen:

Het hoeft geen geheim te zijn dat ik een enorme nerd ben. Dat geef ik zelf ook ruiterlijk toe. Nerd zijn levert je gewoon veel meer op dan niet-nerd zijn. Ik heb per jaar namelijk drie maanden vakantie gedurende de zomer.

Wel nu, ookal ben je geen nerd, maar ben je toch een gemotiveerd persoon en ben je op zoek naar een interessante studie en praktijkgerelateerde ervaring, dan is het volgende stuk speciaal voor jou geschreven.

Afgelopen zomer heb ik geparticipeerd in het Forum Europe programma van Forum Nexus. Barcelona, Parijs, Milaan, Athene en Rhodos werden bezocht in 4 weken tijd. Het programma was erop gericht om in korte tijd een buitenlandse ervaring op te doen met studenten van over de gehele wereld; top-bedrijven in de regio te bezoeken (o.a. Seat, Air France Cargo, UniCredit Bank); culturele ervaring in de betreffende steden op te doen en tot slot verdiende ik er nog studiepunten mee ook.

Nu was afgelopen zomer niet het meest goedkope grapje uit mijn carrière, maar als je bedenkt hoe duur een normale exchange is in verhouding tot wat je hier in een maand tijd, zonder studievertraging voor terugkrijgt is dat het 100% waard.

Komende zomer is het programma uitgebreid en daarmee nog aantrekkelijker. Naast de soortgelijke optie binnen Europa, is er de optie naar Zuid-Afrika te gaan tijdens het WK.

Van 10 juni tot 8 juli reis je van Pretoria naar Johannesburg naar Port Elizabeth naar Kaapstad. In die tijd ga je langs locale bedrijven, volg je 1 tot 2 vakken naar keuze en uiteraard ben je in Zuid-Afrika om de wedstrijden te bezoeken! (Het is overigens mogelijk ook slechts twee weken hiervan deel te nemen voor het geval je niet kunt in verband met tentamens in de zomer.)

Ook is het mogelijk na Zuid-Afrika door te gaan naar het Forum Nexus programma in Europa (of slechts enkel dit programma aan te doen) om daar een soortgelijk programma te volgen als ik afgelopen zomer.

In theorie zou het zelfs mogelijk zijn komende zomer Milaan, Frankfurt, Parijs, Barcelona, Athene, Rhodos, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth en Kaapstad in een tijdsbestek van twee maanden te bezoeken, top-bedrijven te bezoeken en 24 ECTS te verdienen! Uiteraard hebben veel mensen hier de tijd niet voor (hoewel je dus vrijwel een semester aan punten binnenhaalt in twee maanden) en daarom kun je, afhankelijk van je eigen rooster kijken welk programma het beste bij jou past.

The mantra is based on one of, founder, Dan Wieden’s sayings, “You’re only good to me after you’ve made three tremendous mistakes.” So, yeah: Fail Harder.

Wieden noted: through failure and mistakes, a kind of chaos and confusion grows. Most people try to get away from the confusion or deny it. Instead, return to the confusion and be at home in the chaos. By doing this you will start to see different patterns starting to emerge, through seeing these different patterns you will also think in different patterns and thus evolve the creative process in yourself.  So dont get discouraged next time your work is not chosen, or you find you have misread your clients wishes, Failure is a part of doing and creating, and you should not be punished for it, nor should you torture yourself over it! But rather understand that you are one step closer to coming up with something truly creative and great!

I saw this pin piece in the movie Art & Copy. They talked about it and how even in the execution it’s a failure and a triumph. You could have created the type in pins instead of a knock-out effect, but they didn’t. Instead they used 150,000 pins and reportedly spent 351 hours. Time/resource fail. Execution success. Let’s award a point to concept; you win again… you always win.

So, W+K, thank you; Not only for some cool eye-candy, but for a little life lesson. Because, this lesson is as a good a life lesson as it is a design lesson. (Case and point: San Francisco. Pretty big fail. But you know what, I’m better for it.)

I’ve decided I’m going to fail big at something else this year, and see where it takes me. Just one more ’til I hit that mythical third fail. How am I going to do this? Not sure yet, but I’ve got three months left to figure it out. Who’s with me?

well, i guess i should’ve put these up here before i posted i posted them on my guest blog spot over at Sole Collector. now it seems a couple other sites have ganked the images and who knows where they’ll end up. oh well – lesson learned..

anyway, these pieces are works that i created for the Nike sponsored auction at W+K to benefit the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital at OHSU here in Portland OR. if i remember correctly, the 6 wall pieces fetched a whopping $28K that night – something i’m very proud of as all that money goes directly to help the kids! which, being a very-near-future father, i feel an even bigger connection too…

each year, Nike picks six patients from the children’s hospital and allows them to tell their story through the use of their own graphics, colors, and materials. these shoes are then sold at retail with the proceeds benefitting the hospital. but for one night, they have this big auction where they invite a bunch of people who can afford to make sizable donations and offer them the chance to help out with this great cause. the difference with the pairs auctioned that night is that they are signed by a professional athlete and often times have other bonuses – like a custom basketball, or skateboarding lessons with P-Rod… needless to say, they raised a ton of money that night and i was thankful that i could help!

the pieces i created are 3′x2′ and framed in shadow boxes – i chose to photograph them before they were framed as last years images didn’t turn out very well… it was also the only chance i would have to ever see them all together in a scenario that i could actually get some decent shots. anyway, here are a couple examples – you can see all of them as well as some detail shots on my site – www.krupky.com.

in addition to the six pieces i did in this style, i had one extra pair of shoes to something truly special with – the Air Yeezy. each year, they try to raise the anti for the auction so they offered a couple of extremely rare kicks – if your interested, you can watch the videos that i created to build up the hype – there’s 3 total…

anyway back to the sneaker art – so i had this extra pair of shoes and wanted to do something special myself, so i thought i would do something a little more sculptural… like an airplane! i call this the “AirPlane Yeezy”.

the piece is assembled with glue, screws, craft wire, and shoe laces. i tried to maintain the integrity of the individual pieces as much as possible which ultimately lead to it’s unique styling. the stand is a beautiful piece of mahogany with spring wire and was created specially for this project by DJL Studio. both the body and the runway dots glow in the dark. there are a few more shots on my site, too…
