BBC Radio WMA Streams for Windows Media Player

So you want to access the BBC Radio streams as you did in the good old days before the iplayer? Well i’ve found the links hidden away on the BBC’s website. Many a day have i been swearing that I can’t stream programmes such as click, and radio stations to my media player. I just hate the need for flash, a security hole in any system. I hate the need to have a web browser open. I hate the media interface that doesn’t work with my laptops hot-keys! For all those with similar complaints over the iPlayer go to:

Have you ever noticed, especially after you’ve copied your music files to your iPod, that something wasn’t quite right? For instance, I’ve seen cases where the track number or the artist or album information is missing on one or more songs.

While there are third-party tools out there that let you fix things, TagScanner comes to mind, it turns out that if you’re using Windows 7, you can fix your music files directly using features built into the operating system.

Let’s look at an example, shall we?

Do you notice how the track number on ‘08 – Go With the Flow.mp3′ is missing? Look at the column between Album and Title. The one labeled “#”. For this song, it should have an 8, but it’s not there. Let’s fix that!

Right click that entry to bring up the context menu.

Select the ‘Properties’ item from the context menu and you’ll see the Properties dialog:

Select the Details tab and put the right value, in this case 8, into the # field:

You’re almost there! Now, just press the OK button.

When you look at the file in your file viewer, you’ll now see that it has the correct track number. Even better, when you copy this file to your iPod, the track will play in the correct order.

You did it! Note that this example focused on fixing the track number, but you can change just about any property of a song file including artist, album, genre, etc.

Strapya’s products at best could be described as eccentric most of the time.  This product is definitely odd, but it would actually be useful.  It’s so thin you could easily carry it around or lose it for that matter.  Plus it’s not only an MP3 player that’ll play all of your music through your headphones, it also has a built-in speaker to play your music out loud as well.  Sure, it’s not going to be the highest quality of gadget out there, but it at least plays your music.

Westmuse Quarterly Newsletter

Last spring the Western Museums Association took its newsletter WestMuse digital in two ways.  The printed version became a pdf, thanks to Publications Manager Valerie Huaco and this blog got started for consistent, ongoing updates – an open forum for members, nonmembers and every once in a while friends from Australia and other countries, as a valued offering of the Western Museums Association.  The value you get and give others by investing in WMA.

The next step in WMA’s transformation will be to set up digital renewals and move all of the listings to that process. And thankfully you’ve encouraged it.  Accordingly, when a survey email was sent around by WMA Exective Director Elida Zelaya to supporters, asking if taking the newsletter digital was OK, there was a request from several members to make renewals digital, too.  Thank you.

Following #wma09 in San Diego, the Western Museums Association has taken on some necessary restructuring — to read more please see President Aldona Jonaitis’ post San Diego Sun, Sustainability and Seriousness.

And so WMA Board member Allyson Lazar is now heading up the effort toward digitization.  And along the way, just now she was going over the list of Corporate Sponsors.  It’s a great list.  Thanks again.

But as we transferred over the names from a spreadsheet to a web listing, preparing to move them into to a new web-based renewal system, we noticed that portions of the list were out-of-date.  These things happen.

C. David Robinson (1936-2008)

In fact, they’re quite typical for this kind of process.  You miss things.  Especially when supporters pass away, and if someone is not regularly going over the notices.  One of the names that was still on the WMA list was that of C. David Robinson.

The thing is, we could not let this pass without taking this opportunity to draw attention to a remarkable life that still only too recently left our midst in early 2008, and a life that shows just how rich one life can be.

As a supporter of the Western Museums Association, Robinson also represents the breadth of experience WMA stands for and, well, the indefinable character of the organization and the varied people and institutions engaged with WMA.

Chalfant David Robinson led one of those extraordinary twentieth-century lives.  He was born in 1936, in New York and moved to Washington, D.C. at a young age.  According to his obituary in The Washington Post (from which several details below are taken – to read the original article by Matt Schudel click here):

• Mr. Robinson attended St. Albans School and was a graduate of St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H. He received a bachelor’s degree in art history from Princeton University in 1957.
• An outstanding athlete, Mr. Robinson was captain of the Princeton hockey team and participated in rowing. He competed in trials for the 1960 Olympics in crew and also played rugby.
• After college, he served as a Marine Corps officer for three years, and then entered graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a master’s degree in architecture in 1965. His primary mentor at Penn was the renowned architect Louis Kahn.

Mr. Robinson began his career in San Francisco with the firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and in 1970 was a founder of Robinson, Mills & Williams. Later, he was a partner in the firm of Polshek and Partners before founding his own architecture office in 1997.

Additionally Robinson’s experience included:

• The Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for the Visual Arts at Stanford University
• San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
• Yerba Buena Center for Visual Arts in San Francisco
• Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives
• San Jose Museum of Art
• Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco
• Utah Museum of Fine Arts
• Washington State History Museum
• And designs for residences that house major art collections for such clients as Eli Broad, Frederick Weisman, Rene di Rosa, and John Berggruen

Redmond J. Barnett, WMA Board Member and Head of Exhibits at the Washington State Historical Society, remembers working with David Robinson in 1990 on the “program plan” for the Washington State History Museum – the instructions to the design architects about the size and location of each area: “David was tactful but firm, taking direction from the staff but not bashful in warning us to cut our grand ideas down to the probable budget.  His experience as a designer informed his advice as a planner.”

Robinson was also a notable art collector who contributed an important collection of 150 early photographs to the National Gallery of Art in 1995, including works by William Henry Fox Talbot, who is credited with inventing the photographic process in 1839, as well as prints by such pioneers of photography as Eugene Atget, Carleton Watkins, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Walker Evans and Robert Frank.  As a a major collector of 20th-century art, he served on the boards of the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives at the University of California at Berkeley, among others.

Perhaps most famously, Robinson was the chief architect of the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, Calif., which opened in 2002.  Speaking about the project Robinson told the Los Angeles Times in 2002, “Every design decision has been based on a single question: Would Sparky [Schulz's lifelong nickname] be comfortable here?” adding, “We have done our best to suggest the playful whimsy of his cartoon world.”

And the Schulz Museum has blossomed.  One of the more interesting aspects of the Museum and Research Center’s work is their traveling exhibitions.  Now, five years after the Museum and Research Center’s founding, the traveling exhibition program that began in 2001 with Speak Softly and Carry a Beagle: The Art of Charles Schulz remains a vibrant aspect of the Museum and Research Center’s offerings.  The Schulz Museum now has available three exclusive traveling exhibitions that tell the Peanuts story:

• Inside Peanuts: The Life and Art of Charles M. Schulz, an in-depth exploration of Schulz’s creative process spanning his fifty-year career
• Peanuts at Bat examines the Peanuts Gang’s ill-fated baseball adventures and Schulz’s love of the game
• And To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA covers the history of the Apollo 10 mission and the Peanuts characters’ role in that flight.

To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with Nasa started its tour at the San Diego Air and Space Museum this past September 2009, while WMA was in town.

My inaugural post, a lengthy history (personal and generally) of MP3 players, was meant to lay the foundation for this post.  This shorter post.

MP3 player.  Doesn’t just roll off the tongue, does it?  And isn’t it funny how the word “iPod” has become synonymous with MP3 playing devices?  The same way a band-aid is both a bandage and a brand name.  The power of success, eh?  But what exactly does MP3 mean in the first place and is it important?  Well, let’s take a look!

MP3 is actually a shortened version of something else, which also doesn’t roll off the tongue:  MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3.  And we can make this even longer by turning MPEG into Moving Pictures Experts Group.  You can begin to see why “MP3″ took off.

MP3 is a codec, which is a piece of software that compresses and then decompresses (the “co” and “dec” of codec) data.  In this particular instance we are discussing the compression and decompression of data related to a file of music; a song.  MP3 is just one of many codecs that exist in the consumer electronics field as related to digital audio.  Some are open source and some are proprietary.  Some are lossless and some are lossy.  Isn’t this fun?  Even more weird terms to wrap our heads around, but I imagine if you are here, at this blog, you probably already know something about these terms and as such I won’t bother to explain what you already know (and if you don’t know you will find wikipedia and google to be your best friend).

What I really want to get to in this blog is what I call codec snobbery.  The notion that one codec is superior to another and that to use any other codec is simply a waste of time and shows you to be a fool who doesn’t understand anything about digitizing music.

Much is written about the various codecs in the market place and why one is better…no….superior to the others.  There are those who swear by open source codecs like Ogg Vorbis and FLAC.  Why be roped into someone’s proprietary mess when you can be open source?  Well, because the vast majority of MP3 players don’t support either Ogg Vorbis or FLAC…and neither do the mainstream digital audio software players (think iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.)

Are there advantages to going open source?  Sure.  It’s free.  But last time I checked I’m not paying anything to download and install Windows Media Player or iTunes.  There is no cost to me to do such, so I’m not really certain I understand how these free and open source codecs are of some great advantage.  I mean, if they sounded notably better than the more well-known codecs (AAC as used by iTunes, WMA as used by Windows Media Player) then one might be able to make a better argument, but they don’t really sound any better than any other codec in the great scheme of things.

Of course, there are those who swear by AAC, WMA and MP3, which is fine as well.  But I think these folks are mostly steered into their given codec not by some allegiance to the codec itself, but by the player they purchase.  The iPod.  The Walkman.  The Creative Labs.  The Archos.  They encode their CDs in whatever codec their player will play and their software will recognize.  It really is that simple.  As a matter-of-fact, I think it would not be unreasonable to assume that better than 80% of all MP3 player owners wouldn’t even know what is a codec, much less at what bit rate they are encoding their music on their computer.

Yet there are experts and writers out there who want to convince us that FLAC is the only way to go or that WMA VBR (Variable Bit Rate) at a bit rate setting greater than 256 is the bees knees.  But short of using complicated and precise measuring devices to actually “listen” to music encoded by these various codecs at various bit rates and alternating between Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and VBR there is no way to know which sounds best.  And even then I would swear that blind listening tests using tens of thousands of listeners would be the only way to fully understand and appreciate which codec at what bit rate is the best.  And I think it’s pretty obvious this isn’t going to happen.

So what does one do?

For many folks they do nothing.  They go out and purchase the MP3 player they want.  They go home and use the software they like best that will work with their given purchase.  They probably don’t know how to change the bit rate and have never heard of VBR or CBR.  And they probably couldn’t care less.  It makes the whole issue of which is the best codec a horribly moot point.

I mean..think about it.  The iPod, while clearly the run away success of MP3 players, isn’t the best sounding MP3 player on the market.  Never has been.  Will probably never be either.  But that hasn’t hurt its sales in the slightest, has it?  Its success was built upon either criteria.  In other words it sounds good enough.

The average consumer (and by “average” I mean something like 99%) doesn’t care or probably even know about codecs.  They buy the MP3 playing device they want and they want it because it looks cool.  Or is popular and will impart popularity upon them.  Or something.  But it is something other than codec support.

So when the experts tell us we need to be concerned about such matters because it might make an infinitesimal difference in the quality of the sound of the music, I think they should sod off.  Unless the sound quality is noticeably better and can be had without any extra work on my part (having to find special software being the big one), then I don’t want to hear about it.  I’ll stick to WMA or AAC and be happy that I can quickly and easily create music for on the go.

First, I want to thank everyone involved for making the annual WMA Conference in San Diego such a successful event.  Special thanks go to Elida Zelaya and Valerie Huaco who worked tirelessly to welcome our arrival in San Diego.  I also want to thank the Program Committee and the Host Committee, both of whom corralled the collective wit and experience of colleagues and volunteers to present an excellent series of sessions, workshops and social events – many of which concentrated on issues of sustainability – a topic that is on everyone’s mind.   Finally, I would like to thank the vendors and sponsors who supported the Conference, including our lead sponsor, the Barona Cultural Center and Museum.

WMA San Diego 2009

As you may have heard at the Conference, the Western Museum Association is undergoing a restructuring process to ensure that our 74 year old organization continues to thrive.  Despite careful monitoring of the budget by the Board of Directors, WMA revenue is far below target, an unfortunate result of the strain felt by all not-for-profits during the current recession.

The goals of the restructure are to create a business model that cuts overhead costs and thus streamlines administrative activities.  The new model includes eliminating  the positions of Executive Director and Publications and Media Manager, closing the physical office located in Berkeley, CA, and investing in digital communications vs. printed materials, among other administrative cost reductions.

In the next few weeks, the Executive Committee and Task Force will create various business models that will consider 1.) maintaining the organization at a base level 2.) estimating costs and overhead associated with the 2010 Annual Meeting in Portland and 3.)possibly suspending the 2010 Annual Conference in Portland to invest resources in the 2011 Annual Meeting in Hawaii.  Each of these business models will take the best interests of the membership as our first priority.

We will also investigate  innovative ways to keep the membership involved and networking throughout the next three years.  We have discussed developing a series of regional events, sessions, webinars and partnerships with like professional organizations in an effort to serve you better. We welcome your ideas as we explore more ways to network throughout the region.

Each of our institutions have been faced with making difficult decisions in the last year and no decision is harder than that which involves talented  and devoted employees.  Please join me in thanking Elida Zelaya and Valerie Huaco for their hard work and dedication in serving the WMA.  On behalf of the Board and membership, I would like to thank each of them for their valued professional service and their heartfelt commitment to the organization.

We will continue to keep our members up to date on the progress of the objectives mentioned here.  Together with the Board, I am committed to the health and well being of this spectacular organization.  I am gratified that so many members and friends have already stepped forward to volunteer their help and I look forward to many more doing so.  Together we will thrive and celebrate happily the 75th anniversary of WMA in 2010!

J’arrive presque à la fin du marathon bureaucratique pour l’obtention du tant convoité « Building and Land Use Permit. (BLP) » Hier, je suis allé déposer mon volumineux dossier au Conseil de District (CD) de Pamplemousses Rivière du Rempart. Mais avant de vous expliquer comment cela s’est passé, je reviens en arrière.

Je vous ai raconté tout le cirque pour l’obtention des « clearances » (autorisations) de la CEB, CWA et la WMA. Vu l’amateurisme flagrant de la CWA, je m’attendais à ce que cette administration tarde à me délivrer mon autorisation. Par ailleurs, comme le délai de délivrance est de 15 jours maximum, je pensais devoir également attendre une bonne dizaine de jours à chaque fois. Des surprises m’attendaient ! En effet j’ai déposé mon dossier à la WMA le 15 octobre. Le lendemain, je suis allé déposer ma demande au CEB et la CWA. And the winner is…roulement de tambour :

LA CWA ! Car dès le lundi 19 octobre, on m’a appelé pour m’informer que je pouvais venir récupérer mon plan dûment signé et tamponné.

LE CEB a pris un peu plus de temps. C’est le mercredi 21 octobre qu’on m’a appelé pour m’annoncer que mon dossier était accepté.

La WMA est arrivé un peu plus tard. Quoi que, en fait, le dossier avait été accepté le 19 octobre. Mais ce n’est que le lundi 26 octobre qu’on m’a appelé pour me demander de venir récupérer mes plans.

Verdict : même si les trois administrations ont des niveaux de professionnalisme et d’accueil très disparates, elles ont toutes réussi à fournir le service attendu dans un délai largement raisonnable. Petite précision avant de passer à la partie Conseil de District. A Maurice, il est courant de faire appel à une connaissance ou un ami qui bosse dans telle ou telle administration afin d’expédier les procédures. Je n’ai pas eu recours à ce petit coup de pouce. Je suis donc persuadé qu’on a là une mesure acceptable de la rapidité avec laquelle ces administrations traitent les dossiers de ce type.

Nous en venons à l’étape ultime pour obtenir le BLP. Je me suis donc rendu hier au CD à Mapou. Je suis arrivé vers 10h30. On m’a indiqué le bureau où je devais aller déposer mon dossier. Il n’y avait pas grand monde. J’ai été reçu au bout d’une vingtaine de minute.

Le dépôt du dossier de passe en deux étapes. Un cadre technique inspecte d’abord les éléments du dossier. Pour s’assurer que toutes les pièces requises sont là. La checklist pour une demande de BLP résidentielle est la suivante :

1. Titre de propriété du terrain
2. Rapport d’arpentage (du géomètre)
3. 3 copies du plan signées par l’architecte
4. Les plans structurels signés par un ingénieur
5. Une copie du plan approuvé par la CWA
6. Une copie du plan approuvé par le CEB
7. Une copie du plan approuvé par la WMA
8. Photocopie de votre carte d’identité
9. Et la demande** de BLP dûment signée par l’architecte et le demandeur

La personne vérifie assez minutieusement les documents qu’on lui remet et signale immédiatement toute pièce manquante. Dans ce cas, il faut revenir avec toutes les pièces pour que le dossier soit accepté. J’ai entendu l’officier d’à coté dire à une dame, qui était venue déposer son dossier, qu’il faudra revenir avec un dossier complet car ses plans d’architecte avait été mal faits…

Donc après avoir passé l’étape de l’inspection, je me suis dirigé vers une deuxième salle. Où une dame a récupéré mon dossier. J’ai payéRs 500 de frais de dossier. Il y aura probablement encore environs Rs 5000 de frais à payer quand j’irai retirer le permis. Mais quand ?

Depuis le budget de 2006, les permis de construction doivent être délivrés dans un délai de 10 jours. Si après 10 jours le DC ne rend toujours pas de réponse, la loi considère que le permis a été validé par accord tacite (silent agreement). Tout semble s’être bien passé jusqu’ici. Il n’y qu’à espérer que je vais recevoir un coup de fil d’ici la fin de la semaine prochaine, me demandant de venir récupérer mon BLP…
