by Chris Freitas For Memphis students interested in the world of broadcasting, there are opportunit

by Chris Freitas

For Memphis students interested in the world of broadcasting, there are opportunities at local radio and television stations where they can learn how to become successful.

Tools such as the sound board are used by on-air announcers and give them hands-on experience with real broadcast equipment.

Jarvis Greer, a sportscaster for WMC-TV 5, got his start as a intern at WKNO-TV 10, where he covered basketball and got hands-on experience.

“I did everything, such as camera work, directing, setting up and tearing down equipment,” Greer said. “They let us do everything and I got to learn the technical and business side.”

Eventually, Greer got a job at WMC, two days after graduating from the University of Memphis. He has been a sportscaster for the station for about 30 years.

Meteorologist Tim Van Horn interned at WMC in 1999, where he gained experience in both television and radio. Working alongside weathermen Dave Brown and Ron Childers, his internship was not what he expected.

Van Horn said, “WMC was quiet like a library and there were not many eyes looking at you.”

He also said that the experience was fantastic because of the station’s heritage, equipment, and its ability to treat its interns as full-fledged employees.

After he interned at the station, Van Horn become a meteorologist for WMC.

Greer said students must have a thirst for knowledge.

“The more you do, the more jobs will be available for you,” he said.

Van Horn said that interns should use the technology and resources fully, and getting involved with everything at the workplace.

Another place where students can learn how to be on-air announcers or work behind-the-scenes is here at the U of M. WUMR is a student-operated FM station located in the Theatre/Communications Building. Several famous on-air personalities, including Van Horn and Greer, worked for U 92.

Malvin Massey Jr., station manager of WUMR, on the air speaking with "Jazz Lovers."

A student could work as an announcer, production manager, news or sports director, music director, or program director. With the exception of on-air personalities, all of the station positions are paid minimum wage or $7.25 per hour.

Station manager Malvin Massey Jr. said, “There are about four or five staff positions made up of students. It is about 60/40, with students making the majority, while the remaining positions are volunteers.”

“Those who want to pursue this career must be persistent,” Massey Jr., said. “Positions are not hard and fast. You must be willing to travel and be able to learn a marketable skill, but understand it flows with the time.”

At the University of Memphis, students wanting to major in broadcasting will be disappointed in the fact that the school is no longer accepting new majors.

On March 2, 2008, the former associate chair of the communications department, Dr. Robert McDowell, passed away from cancer. The failure to find a replacement and curriculum cuts caused the concentration to be eliminated.

As a result, there are fewer communications courses.

Athens’s demands and pressure of the European bureaucracy for change of the name of Macedonia is genocide over Macedonian nation, disgrace for the European democracy and crime against mankind. This is what chairman of the World Macedonian Congress (WMC) Todor Petrov stated during demonstration before the EU mission in Macedonia. WMC stated that the goal of the protest is to announce the massage of Macedonian people who are against the demand for changing the name of the country. According to Petrov the protest will make an impact over the social opinion. WMC leader pointed out that he unconditionally wants ceasing talks for name changing and the government and the President to notify the UN Secretary General that Macedonia continues its membership in the world organizations under its constitutional name.

So excited to tell what I am up to. A gazillion things actually; Writing, working, teaching, working more, thinking, creating, being a Mom…. Seeing Phish play at Cobo Arena in Detroit.

It was a great show. Big difference from the small bar, St Andrews hall they played in, in ‘92… not sure how many can fit in there?10,500 people at Cobo! It was awesome. They played, “bounce around the room”, and I remember the trampolines they used to jump on. We were so young.

To top that night off, my Big brother bought myself, and my husband tickets to the show!!! AND!! I got to meet my brothers girlfriend, Melissa. She is beautiful & kind; and I am really excited for them!! (And for me, cuz i get a new cool friend )

So many things going on…….

decals, beads, tutorials, Winter show at the Dearborn Academy!!!!!!

“Holiday Glass Art & Ornament Extravaganza” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, 2009

In honor of seeing Neko Case at the Moon tonight, I am going to take a look back at many of the live

In honor of seeing Neko Case at the Moon tonight, I am going to take a look back at many of the live music shows I have seen over the years. Some good, some, well, not so much. From the Big Sombrero to Jannus Landing, U2 to De La Soul, I have seen some weird, wild stuff.

Starship. There. I said it. My name is Lyssa and Starship was my first concert. I went with my sister. We saw them in Peoria, a city that was not built on rock and roll. I wanted my first concert to be Loverboy or Prince — two shows I have since seen — alas, it wasn’t meant to be. (For the record, I only saw Loverboy in 2008 because they played after a Tampa Bay Rays game, and they sucked.)

U2. The first time I saw U2, it was the Joshua Tree Tour, 5 December 1987 (the day after my birthday!) at Tampa Stadium. My boyfriend bought my ticket ($18.50, I still have the stub, of course), and I ended up breaking up with him before the concert. We traded tickets (I got the good ones), so I got to sit with my friend Jenny, whose dad drove us to the show. Fantastic. Amazing. Awesome. I consider this my first “real” concert. Seeing U2 in that stadium was one of the best times of my life. Seriously. I also saw U2’s Elevation tour at the Ice Palace on 1 December 2001. Another birthday gift ($110), and another boy — this time I was just about to break up with him. I guess I should be glad I didn’t go see U2 in Tampa this year.

Depeche Mode. So many Depeche shows, so many good times. Of course, I remember the show I couldn’t go to because of a freakin’ hurricane. Thank you, Hurricane Wilma, for canceling the kickoff show of DM’s Playing the Angel tour. I promoted the show with this great piece I wrote for the Miami New Times, and scored a free ticket and access to the band. Fuck you, Wilma. Well, I will always have the World Violation Tour, the Devotional Tour, and the Exciter Tour, but I will always remember the one that washed away. Wait, I will also remember the Devotional Tour, when I was in the second row and made eye contact with David Gahan as we sang “Stripped” and danced as one. *sigh* Yes, that makes everything better. Phew.

R.E.M. The Green Tour was a fun show. It was our senior year of high school, right before we graduated, and I went with a bunch of my girlfriends. It was at the USF Sun Dome, which isn’t the best venue, but it was still great to see R.E.M. It just sucks that my most vivid memory of that concert is of the drunk guy who almost puked on me. I jumped out of the way just in the nick of time.

Lollapalooza. It was the 9 August 1991, and I had just moved to Boston. My friend Holly and I scored free — and awesome — tickets to go see the festival at Great Woods. Siouxsie and The Banshees were on that tour, but didn’t play because the bitch got sick. We did get to see Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T, the Butthole Surfers and the Henry Rollins Band. Well, I slept through Living Colour — until the hippies began throwing sod and I got hit in the head. Not cool. Anyone who knows me knows how much I hate being dirty (when I’m not prepared to be dirty; camping doesn’t count). I was wicked cranky until Perry Farrell got on stage. “Jane Says” made it all better. Oh, here’s a photo from a yacht part I went to with Perry. It was during WMC in Miami, and Sasha & Digweed were the DJs for the party on a boat. Sweet.

Perry Farrell and his lovely wife

The Lemonheads. I met Evan Dando when I was living in Boston, and I had a huge crush on him. I was very excited about going to see him at the Masquerade in Atlanta. I went with my crazy friend Kim, and I lost her two minutes after we got inside. I didn’t care. I was used to it. I had staked out my spot by the stage and I was going to stare at Evan during the entire show. I bonded with some girls around me and had a great time. After the second encore, the lights came on and a woman came on stage, grabbed the mike and shouted, “Is there a Lyssa Oberkreser in the crowd? Lyssa?” OMG. It was my moment. Evan recognized me and wanted me to come backstage! OMG. The girls around me screamed and boosted me up on stage. I was giddy. The lights were on me and everyone knew that I was special. Evan picked me! {flutters} Um, yeah. Not so much. It wasn’t that at all. It was my friend, my drunk friend who passed out backstage, and I was called upon to claim her drunk ass and take her home. KHAAAAAN!!!!!!! (The second time I saw the Lemonheads was at Jannus Landing, and I ran into my friend GeorgeAnn, which was very cool.)

Moby. On tour for “Play,” you wouldn’t think that Moby would put on a good live show, but it was fantastic. Great outdoor courtyard venue, perfect weather, and good friends. But the meat! My G-D, the meat! There I was, watching Moby the vegan while choking on the smoke and smell of grilled meat. There had to have been about 10 sausage vendors around that courtyard, and it was impossible to get away from all of the smell of burning dead animals. Un-freakin’-believable.

Elvis Costello. The absolute worst show I have ever seen in my life. Seriously. It was at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in 2004. I went with my friend Nick (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Elvis Costello?”), and I fell asleep. Elvis only played ballads (awww! He was in wuv!) and it was a crowd of older people, meaning that I could hear beeping hearing aids throughout the show. BO-RING. Hated it. Huge disappointment.

Prince. When I was in the 6th grade, I begged my mom to let me go see Prince. Of course, she said no. I had no idea what a “pocket full of horses, Trojan and some of them used” meant, but I thought Prince was hot and I loved him. Flash forward 20 years. My friend Nick had an extra ticket for Prince’s 2004 Musicology tour at the St. Pete Times Forum (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Prince?”), and I was beyond excited. Awesome show. Definitely in my top 5 favorite concerts of all time. Prince performed for nearly three hours. It was incredible. Good things do come to those who wait.

Wilco. Saw them twice. Once at the Tampa Theatre, the other time at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater. Both shows were fantastic. Great venues, great band. Wilco puts on an awesome show when the members aren’t too high.

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. Wow. Nothing like saving the best for last. Not the best show. Oh, no. The best story, for sure. The entire night is enough for a solid book chapter. Here you will get the sweet and condensed version. I hadn’t really eaten all day, I did some serious bar-hopping (and stuff) before heading to the show at Club Downunder, and I fainted. Yep. First time I ever fainted. I once experienced the almost-fainting thing, but I had never fainted before the night of Sharon Jones. Listening to the opening act, I started to feel it. I had the tunnel vision going on, it was closing in, and I could no longer focus on the fiddle and accordion players on stage. I was going down. Only, I thought I could fight it. I fought something, or someone. I have no idea how long I was blacked out, I just remember waking up on the floor. A friend was holding my glasses. Some kid was handing me a bottle of water. I could see my date’s feet next to me, but I was too dizzy and too embarrassed to look up at him. I fainted. In public. I was that girl. Mortified. Well, at least I didn’t puke or piss myself, right? The good news? I fucking rallied like a champ and didn’t miss one note of (the very short) Sharon Jones. ROCK ON!

Here’s to a good show tonight, with good friends, beautiful music, and no fainting!

My wife and I like to watch old movies, murder mysteries, and reruns of 80’s sitcoms. Our content of choice pretty much mandates that we watch streaming video; NetFlix is our provider of choice today. We watch on a regular basis between 9 and 10 at night because our kids won’t let us near the TV at any other time. And that’s okay. The point is, by the time we get around to settling down to a good movie, the kids are in bed and we can’t really use the home theater. We have to watch in our bedroom to keep the noise level down.

To facilitate this habit, I’ve strung a VGA cable and a ministereo-to-RCA cable from the back of the flat panel TV in our bedroom to a shelf a few feet away where I set the laptop when streaming NetFlix content. This works well, but short of paying for various accessories like an air mouse, I’ve had to jump up and hit the pause button occasionally, whenever we’ve wanted to discuss a point in the movie – usually a mystery.

Yesterday I upgraded my HTPC (64-bit 2.84 GHz quad processor AMD) from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 and found the new features of 7MC to be nothing less than wonderful. The user interface enhancments are exactly what you’d expect, given the UI enhancments between Vista and Windows 7. The new TV card management software in 7MC is much better than the Vista version. The new Guide actually represents all of the available channels now (plus a few I didn’t even know about!), as opposed to the previous 30 percent coverage provided by the Vista MC Guide. The Internet TV feature is now out of beta, and seems pretty nice. And lastly, and most importantly, the integrated NetFlix interface is just nothing short of cool.

Or so I thought. But Microsoft seems to think that I’ll only ever want to watch streaming content on my PC. I just don’t get that mindset. Who do you know that sits at their desk and watches TV?! I’ll answer for you: no one. Neither NetFlix nor the new Internet TV features are supported on the extender interface. Thus, my only options for watching NetFlix on my TV remain as follows:

Connect my HTPC directly to my TV.

Continue to use my laptop as above.

As far as connecting my HTPC to my home theatre system, well, that was always the ultimate goal, but I’ve grown accustom to having the unit in the play room, where I could mess with new features in comfort with convenient access to its insides if necessary. I’ve sort of allowed myself to dream of the possibility that the XBox extender would just become better through the years until it finally did everything I wanted it to.

Recently, I read a comment on a blog somewhere that indicated that Microsoft was motivated (monitarily, of course) to NOT allow streaming content on the XBox extender. The rationale was that the XBox console was using NetFlix streaming content as a hook to get people to buy XBox Live Gold memberships. Well, I’ll be hanged if I’ll pay a subscription fee just to get extender support for a service I already pay NetFlix for.

Wake up Microsoft! These are two different market segments. Will gamers mind paying for an XBox Live Gold subscription? No, they’re already paying for a subscription anyway. Will they go out and buy an HTPC so they don’t have to have that subscription to stream NetFlix? No, they bought that subscription for other reasons (games).

On the other hand, will home theatre enthusiasts pay for XBox Live just so they can stream NetFlix content to their big screen or bedroom? Possibly a few, but most (like myself) will be too angry with the marketing tactics to play along. Will they buy a Gold subscription because they might want to play games too? Possibly a few will, but mostly, gamers are gamers, and home theatre enthusiasts are into movies.

So why emmasculate Media Center and alienate your hardware partners by disallowing some of the most enticing reasons to get an extender? Again I say, wake up…please. I might buy an XBox for my bed room just to use as an extender – if I had a good enough reason.

In case you haven’t already heard, I wanted to let you know that we’ve launched Internet TV in Windows Media Center for Windows 7 users. Internet TV lets you watch videos from a variety of providers via the Internet right in Windows Media Center in addition to live and recorded TV (if you have a TV tuner for your PC).

For Windows 7, Internet TV has been updated with enhancements to the UI and features more content from new content providers. Those providers include the CBS Audience Network, Zune (Full Zune Video Podcast Library available), MSNBC, MSN, and more.

And you can access Internet TV right from the Guide in Windows Media Center!

Internet TV is currently now available for free for people running Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. The CBS Audience Network and the Zune Video Podcast Library in Internet TV is only be available within the U.S. but Internet TV is also available in the UK with content from Sky and MSN.

Also now available is Netflix for Windows Media Center in Windows 7!

Right from Windows Media Center, you can access your Instant Queue to play movies and TV shows and browse the Netflix library and add movies or TV shows to your Instant Queue or Instant Queue. Netflix in Windows Media Center is only available in the U.S. today as Netflix On-Demand (“Instant Watch”) videos are available only in the U.S.

Gadget weblog Engadget spotted the update this afternoon, and while the improvement hasn’t added support for Media Center extenders (like the Xbox 360) or HD streaming (bummer), it’s a great feature if you’ve turned your Windows PC into a media center powerhouse.

The Netflix update should become available to your Windows 7 Media Center automatically, but if it doesn’t, Engadget says you go to Tasks -> Settings -> General -> Automatic Download Options to manually start the update. In the meantime, you can check out more pics of it in action over at Engadget.
