OK, so it appears that you couldn’t do this with Vista either. So what? Microsoft couldn’t FIX THIS.

So this is what happened.

I finally decided I was going to do a real life Word project on my new Windows 7 rig using my new Office 2007.

I was going to create a FLYER.

I was going to use some Clip Art … that I had.

Having written a monthly, graphics intensive, 16-page newsletter for 7 years I had built up quite a nice library of Microsoft clip art on my PCs. I keep them all in a folder within MY PICTURES called ‘Microsoft Clip Art Organizer.’

If I am looking for clip art of a PC or similar I start there.

So in Word 2007 … said INSERT FILE … and looked at my clip art folder. NO PREVIEWS. Aaahhhh!

How can YOU select clip art if you can’t see the damn image?

Well it appears that Microsoft NO LONGER supports previews of THEIR own clip art! (The so called WMF. files.)

Yes, you can get around it by using Microsoft Clip Art Organizer which comes as a tool with Office 2007.

I have never used it in anger before. Had to use it today. It has the look-and-feel of a 1980s DOS application. Finally got it to do WHAT I wanted on the 4th try.

Yes, now I can preview my MS clip art via Organizer.

But this is CRAZY.

I read somewhere, a couple of days ago, that Microsoft was laying off 800 people. Hhhmmmmm.

I am still in shock.

Biedermeier Style

“Bieder”: worthy, sedate, staid, also petit-bourgeois.

“Meier” : one of the commonest German surnames.

Biedermeier was an influential style from Germany and Austria during the years 1815 (Vienna Congress) and 1848 (the year of the European revolutions), based on utilitarian principles. The furniture, decorative arts, and paintings of the period reflected the taste of the newly emerging bourgeoisie. Emphasizing less extravagant means, a new standard of beauty was created through simplicity, proportion, utility and elegance. The Biedermeier style was a simplified interpretation of the influential French Empire Style of Napoleon I. The same style was known as Regency in England, Restoration in France, and Later Federal in USA, but Biedermeier was less ornate. The term became absorbed into foreign languages and from that point on signified a typically German style.

This style is associated with Germany’s greatest poet: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832).

In 1776 Goethe stated that the power poetry (Dichtungskraft) needs an environment of familiarity and intimacy (Vertraulichkeit, Bedürfnis, Innigkeit).

Or: what happens on a Friday night when you power through from work>>dinner>>club/party.

Namely, exhaustion, drunkenness, bad photography.

And fun times.

(Just don’t expect good pictures, is what I’m trying to get at here)

The night began righteously with a restaurant I simultaneously want to tell everyone about, and not tell anyone, so that it will stay a little lovely secret, because I don’t really like to share.

I’m talking about cozy-wozy Themroc on Torstraße, where we almost got turned away at 8 because of “reservations,” but after milling around the bar for 5 mins. we were apparently legit enough to be seated.

The awkward shuffle at the door was quickly forgiven and forgotten.

The view from our table was…the kitchen. As in sink, spice rack, cook. As in making our food. And no, this doesn’t mean we got hustled into the nosebleed section on account of no reservations. The kitchen is adorably right by the door.

As in any kitchen worth its guests, the refrigerator is covered in magnets/cute pictures. Jazz in the background and the gentle hum of various groups of people who like each other talking about things that make them feel good.

The menu is very small and exists only in the brains of the cook (1) and waiter (1). On offer was one appetizer, a sort of tabbouleh-style salad with shrimp. I like my tabbouleh with a little more zing and zest i.e. lemony-mintyness, but the shrimp were flavorful morsels grilled to perfection.

Next was a choice between something lamb and something chicken, I regret to admit that I was paying nil attention at this point, focusing more on like the wine-aspect of the meal (also excellent and plentiful), and so can tell you nothing about the lamb, since everyone at my table and at all the neighboring tables seemed to be going for the chicken.

The entree was solid and satisfying, if not spectacular. A little mogul of basmati rice mediated between a hunk of (baked?) chicken and a tzatziki salad. The chicken was tender and melty, basking but not bathing in a zesty-sweet-curry kind of sauce….mm now that I think about it, it actually was pretty perfect. It just didn’t stand out, exactly, but with the obvious theme here being that feel-good satisfaction of utter simplicity, wouldn’t anything more have been too much?

In any case, the dessert launched me to new heights of happiness: a warm fig amid fruity sauce and vanilla cream, all gooey and soft and choice with tiny caramelized crunchy nuts sprinkled on top.

All this warm and wonderful comfort food + drinks aplenty for less than the price of a pair of American Apparel leggings.

Speaking of which, the next stop was Major Lazer at WMF. This was really a great party, mostly because they had a little side room where the dj actually laid down the hip-hop all night long (this never happens in Germany), including some mash-ups that even though I feel negative about the mashup genre generally I have to say were pretty tight.

I don’t feel like that requires further explanation, except that it’s the mutant science experiment of dj/producers Diplo and Switch and rocked pretty effing hard.

um you may recall I mentioned something about substandard photography. i think i should get points for even trying to take pictures and dance simultaneously.

why yes, thank you for asking, that is in fact a storm trooper in the right hand corner on stage. mostly blocked by some hombre getting way better pictures than me.

So I was in Columbus last friday w/ some friends and we stumbled on a new word… or should I say a new expression to be spread via txt, twitter, blogs, facebook, etc. It’s called, “Wagging My Finger,” or WMF. It is a close cousin to “Shaking My Head,” or SMH (which i hadn’t even heard of until about a week ago). See, sometimes you can shake your head, but that’s a very passive sort of scolding. Sometimes you have to break it down like mom did back in the day and make a very directed sort of scolding. Hence WMF’s birth.

I was so excited about Kevin and my discovery that I had to take it to the internet… Urbandictionary.com to be exact. I couldn’t believe no one had already posted this. Either way, I am pleased. Even my Sunday nights are productive!

La agregatele de mai sus se adaugă

Împreună, triada perfectă de produs cafea. Dar, există un dar. Nici una din agregate nu poate produce un espresso… Moka pot-ul e pe aproape dar totuşi e departe de chestia aia cu cremă din care sare linguriţa şi care se poate bea prin barurile din Italia. În Germania pe post de espresso primeşti de cele mai multe ori o cafea foarte tare sau un espresso foarte lung.

Toate căutarile mele au dat greş. Pe unde am fost şi am gustat din espress-oul scos de diverse agregate: Siemens, Bosch, WMF, şamd concluzia a fost: Da. E concentrat, are spumă dar totuşi ceva lipsea.

Am luat site-urile de net la puricat şi am ajuns la cofeegeeks… Şi aici am găsit ghidul perfect pentru cumpărat maşina de cafea ideală…

Citit, recitit, scărpinat în cap… Maşini automate, maşini semi-automate, maşini manuale…

Man kann nicht nur Schweine schlachten, Rinder, Schafe und sonstiges Getier. Es kommt vor, dass man auch eine Flasche Wein schlachten muss.  Das Herz blutet dabei und die Flasche blutet. Der Korken zerstückelt in viele Stücke. Screwpull, an hunderten von Flaschen erfolgreich erprobt, scheitert an COR Römigberg, 2000, von Alois Lageder. Erst einem gezackten WMF gelingt es, den Korken Stück um Stück, Stückchen um Stückchen herauszu… beinahe hätte ich -popeln geschrieben. Nein! Soetwas würde ich nicht schreiben. Ich puhle den zerbröckelten Korken aus seinem Hals.  Der Rest wird hineingestoßen. Das Ergebnis:  Weinflecken an der Wand. Der Wein, durch einen Seier gegossen, schmeckt, wie dieser wunderschöne Bordeaux aus Südtirol schmecken soll. Wenigstens etwas!

Here I am, trying to be the perfect 1950’s housewife and failing pretty spectacularly! As I type, the kitchen sink is full of soap suds and soggy, soapy towels that I rescued from the billowing bubbles spurting out the washing machine. I only added the normal capful of detergent, but somehow it mutated into a soapy nightmare. I now have red-raw hands from my futile attempts to wring out the suds. It made no difference … the more water I added, the more the bubbles expanded!

This isn’t the only problem I’ve had with my domestic endeavours. It all started the weekend we moved in and I set about cooking our first meal in our new condo. You would not believe the frustration I went through at simply trying to get a pan of water to boil on the hob. Doesn’t sound hard does it? And it’s something I’ve done a million times before. But I was truly foxed on my first attempt.

Pan filled with water? Check.
Hob turned on? Check.
Water boiling? No
[... Half an hour later ... ]
Water boiling? Still ruddy no!

After wondering how I could possibly get so het up about such a trivial thing as boiling water, A took pity and searched the internet for instructions for our hob. We read them through and it seemed I had done everything right. So why wasn’t it working? After a round of cursing and a more careful read of the manual, I discovered we had a posh Gaggenau induction hob which needs special magnetised pans!?! I’ve never even heard of an induction hob so this was all news to me. One set of fantastic WMF pans later (all the more fantastic for their 70% off price in Takishamiya), and I’m cooking on gas. Well, cooking on induction actually.

A could probably think of a few more kitchen related ”incidents” to add here. Mainly involving the experimental packed lunches I keep making him. All for another blog …

In mei werden de creatiefste reclamecampagnes ter wereld met een Clio Award bekroond. De Amerikaanse awardshow is een van de grootste reclame-events wereldwijd. Messenfabrikant WMF won er goud met een campagne gemaakt door Leo Burnett & Arc Worldwide Thailand.

Es war einer von diesen Abenden. Man geht so aus dem Büro nach Hause, kauft noch schnell ein bisschen Brot und Käse, weil man ja auch Hunger hat, und hat dieses unbestimmte Gefühl: heute muss noch was passieren. Man weiß nur nicht was, und das kann einen ganz schön kirre machen.

Also, während man noch im Büro sitzt und schonmal in Gedanken durchgeht, was denn jetzt im heimischen Kühlschrank ganz akut fehlt, weil der ja eigentlich immer eher leer ist da man kaum dazu kommt, mal zu Hause zu essen, überlegt man sich: was könnte man heute Abend nur anstellen. Denn irgendwas muss einfach passieren.

Tja, zum Glück habe ich dann über Umwege noch was gefunden. Moderat haben im WMF gespielt. Moderat, das sind Modeselektor und Apparat, also zwei recht bekannte Mitglieder dieses Musikbereiches, den ich nicht immer ganz treffsicher bezeichnen kann und daher immer als elektronische Musik bezeichne. Bei Apparat war ich ja in Dresden schon mal. Und wie die Erinnerungsstütze meines eigenen Blogs mir gerade mitteilt, war ich damals eher gespaltener Meinung.

So sah das Anfangs auch hier aus. Es kommt wie es halt so kommt, man geht alleine in einen Club und hat die Vage Ahnung, dass irgendjemand den man kennt schon auftauchen wird. Von anderen weiß man, dass sie da sein werden, hat aber keine Ahnung wo sie sein könnten, und wo weiter und so fort…

Als ich das WMF dann gefunden hatte, den Eintritt bezahlt und das erste Bier in der Hand hatte, kam dann auch erst einmal die Ernüchterung. Ein merkwürdiges Warm-Up-Set, viel Mitte – erst einmal Orientierung suchen, Bier trinken. Ich muss mich ja auch erst einmal auf den Club einlassen und so.

Und dann steht man da, mitten in einem Club, hält sich an seinem Bier fest, raucht zu viele selbstgedrehte Zigaretten, und wartet, dass es los geht; darauf, in der Menge zu verschwinden und die Musik zu genießen. Wozu ist man auch sonst hier?

Und nachdem ich dann ein paar Leute wiedererkannt habe, mich mit ein paar Leuten nett unterhalten und den einigermaßen grausamen Vor-Act überstanden habe, geht es los.

Das heißt eher: Moderat legen los. Am Anfang noch eher gedämpft, aber doch mitreißend. Klare Rhythmen, sphärische Sounds. Musik, die Spaß machen muss. Ein Set, bei dem es wirklich Schade ist, dass nach 90 Minuten schon wieder Schluss ist. Musik, die einen den doch eher heftigen Eintrittspreis vergessen lässt. 90 Minuten Spaß am tanzen, halt.

Dass man dabei auch vergisst, wie viel man schon getrunken hat, ist leider die Kehrseite der Medaille. Und nachdem ich dann auch noch zu Tequila und Vodka eingeladen wurde, war ich doch froh, dass ich gelernt habe, dass man auch mit einem Kater arbeiten gehen kann.

Achja, bevor ich’s vergesse: Das ganze war ne Record Release Party (für die mich die Iren am Wochende irgendwie beneidet haben zu scheinen, aber das ist ne ganz andere Geschichte) — das heißt das Album ist draußen. Erschienen ist das ganze auf BPitchControl, denen man übrigens auch auf Twitter folgen kann.

Und schon wieder wurde ein hochwertiges Produkt von WMF bei Amazon stark im Preis gesenkt. Gemeint ist der WMF Messerblock Classic Line 6 teilig, Buche für 59,96€.
