O współpracy między samorządem studentów a samorządem miejskim debatowaliśmy dzisiaj w Instytucie Politologii. Gościli u nas m.in. przewodniczący Rady Miejskiej Wrocławia – dr Jacek Ossowski, Prorektor ds. Studenckich – prof. Teresa Łoś-Nowak i Kanclerz UWr – Ryszard Żukowski.

Dyskusja dotyczyła również przyczyn niskiego zainteresowania studentów wyborami, organizacji pracy samorządów i stopniom decentralizacji samorządu.

Kwestia współpracy władz iasta z samorządami studenckimi, którą poruszyłam, stała się jednym z głównych tematów debaty. Studenci nie dali się zbyć frazesami o regularnym udziale w wyborach samorządowych (większość studentów jest spoza Wrocławia!), finalnie całe gremium przyznało, że konsultacje powinny zacząć się odbywać – to dobry początek.

Ciekawą propozycję złożył przedstawiciel samorządu doktorantów. Zaproponował stworzenie platformy do współpracy samorządowców ze wszystkich uczelni, by przedstawiać wspólne stanowisko studentów z całego miasta. Na pewno z głosem 140 tysięcy studentów magistrat będzie musiał się liczyć.

Debatę zorganizowało Koło Młodych Politologów, zapraszając dodatkowo przedstawicieli samorządów studenckich z innych uczelni. Pierwotnie dyskusja miała być merytoryczna, jednak momentami niektórzy uczestnicy jakby o tym zapominali i merytorykę przyćmiewała kwestia zbliżających się wyborów. Tu wyrazy szacunku dla prowadzących za umiejętne moderowanie dyskusji.

Kilka setek studentów politologii i europeistyki witało tradycyjnie już rok akademicki w Alibi. Oczywiście nie mogło mnie tam zabraknąć

Z czystym sumieniem mogę przyznać: to była jedna z najlepszych imprez w tym roku akademickim! Alibi pękało w szwach, bawiłam się rewelacyjnie. Organizacją zajmowało się KMP.

Sebastian Jeziorski zgodził się udostępnić na moim blogu kilka zdjęć swojego autorstwa , co z przyjemnością robię.

O urokach Przywództwa Politycznego i innych specjalnościach na kierunku politologia opowiadałam studentom, którzy dopiero zamierzają wybrać coś dla siebie.

Spotkanie organizowane przez Koło Młodych Politologów rozpoczęło się o 14. Całość prowadził dr Maciej Cesarz, poszczególne specjalizacje prezentowali m.in. dr Andrzej Ferens, dr hab. Kazimierz Dziubka i dr Andrzej Dybczyński.

Po prezentacjach pracowników nadszedł czas na studentów – opowiadałam o specjalności, którą ukończyłam na licencjacie. Dobrze, żeby ludzie z drugiego roku wiedzieli co ich czeka:)

Jak wygląda Koszarowa i okolice wie każdy, kto studiuje na WNSie. Czajkowskiego tonie w błocie i brakuje chodników, podobnie jest na Sołtysowickiej. Na przystankach i chodnikach Koszarowej można by urządzić zawody pływackie a żeby przejść przez Przybyszewskiego i nie zostać ochlapanym trzeba mieć albo olbrzymie zasługi w niebie albo potężny amulet w kieszeni.

Przez cztery lata studiów, każdej jesieni słyszę, jak wszyscy narzekają i mówią, że trzeba to zmienić. Jednak problem narasta; nikt do tej pory nie podjął trudu rozwiązania go. Teoretycznie studenci mogliby zaopatrzyć się w gumiaki, najlepiej z logiem WNS…

Wydział Nauk Społecznych to trzecia co do wielkości jednostka organizacyjna Uniwersytetu. Jednak przez lata nikt nie miał chęci, czy siły przebicia by poprawić warunki panujące w okolicy.

Remedium na większość problemów studentów WNSu leży w kompetencjach samorządu miejskiego – Urzędu, Rady Miasta i Rad Osiedlowych. Z tego powodu powinniśmy rozpocząć efektywną współpracę z tymi organami.

Moim priorytetem jest rozwiązanie trudności związanych z infrastrukturą techniczną, a także kwestią komunikacji miejskiej i dojazdów na ul. Koszarową. Zastanowię się, dlaczego dzielnica „stoi plecami” (delikatnie rzecz ujmując) do 5 tysięcy studentów, skoro  interesy Nasze i mieszkańców osiedla są tożsame.  Postaram ułatwić współpracę mieszkańców okolic ul. Koszarowej i studentów Wydziału Nauk Społecznych, tak aby wszystkim żyło się łatwiej.

Podejmuję się zorganizowania debaty dotyczącej miejsca Wydziału w przestrzeni miejskiej.

Problemy studentów WNSu były tematem mojej rozmowy z Tomaszem Stanko, Radnym Rady Miejskiej Wrocławia. Wyraził on żywe zainteresowanie sprawą oraz zadeklarował chęć udziału w debacie dotyczącej Naszych problemów (żądań). Zaproszę na tę rozmowę również przedstawicieli rad osiedlowych i ZDiUM. Nie powinno zabraknąć przedstawiciela władz Wydziału, ale nie zapominajmy, że to My powinniśmy najgłośniej wyrazić swoja opinię.

As you may know, one of the key roles of the VAA Collective is Activism. Our members are deeply passionate about many various social, political, environmental, etc..causes. One of primary concern to our members is the preservation of wildlife.

“The Pennsylvania Gaming Commission recently issued an Order to PA wildlife rehabilitators titled “White Nose Syndrome Response Bat Rehabilitation Ban.” This ban is in response to White Nose Syndrome (WNS), a poorly understood malady associated with the deaths of hundreds of thousands of bats in the Northeast, and perhaps the greatest threat to North American wild bat populations in recorded history. This ban cites the state focus on surveillance and containment of WNS, and prohibits the rehabilitation of bats within any county in PA for the remainder of 2009. Further, wildlife rehabilitators will not be permitted to accept any cave or tree bat until further notice and no bats of any species are allowed to be released into the environment.

Additionally, this ban calls for the euthanization of all incoming bats, regardless of species or age class, and the subsequent submission of deceased specimens to the PGC. A conservative estimate for the cost involved in humanely euthanizing a bat and appropriately packaging the specimen for overnight shipping to the PCG is approximately $70.00 per animal. There is no provision in this ban to provide any funds to rehabilitators for the costs associated with this directive. Wildlife rehabilitators provide a voluntary service for the State of PA and operate their facilities out of their own funds. As many as 50 bats per year per rehabilitator can be expected to be received from the public. Accordingly, this ban will cost each rehabilitator a conservatively estimated $420.00 during 2009. The PGC cannot legally require bat rehabilitators in the state of PA to absorb the cost of killing the animals they were formerly permitted to save.

Of the eight states confirming the presence of WNS, Pennsylvania is the only state to mandate an order to kill all bats coming into rehabilitation.“

The Forest Service recently hired us to produce a short program about White Nose Syndrome. It’s a fungus that has been killing bats by the hundreds of thousands in the Northeast and Appalachia. It’s important to let people know that the fungus is spreading fast and that people may be one of the vectors for its spread. It can be viewed at www.cavebiota.com

It’s scary to think we may see the end of several species of bats in just a couple of years. The Indiana bat, Myotis sodalis, has been on the endangered list since the 60’s.  The US Fish & Wildlife Service has worked hard to keep their numbers from declining and actually saw some modest increases in the last decade. However, if the fungus reaches the Midwest (and it’s nearly a certainty that it will) it could mean extinction for the Indiana bat.

Bats have the novel ability to be both cute and repugnant at the same time. People often overlook their contribution to the environment because they’re difficult to observe.  While making “Caves: Life Beneath the Forest” we were able to access a bat cave just as the bats were waking up from hibernation.  They covered the ceiling and squeaked at us as we arranged the camera and light. We were able to get within inches of the animals and could hear the little lip smacks when they yawned. Each bat would go through a convulsive shake to get their body temperature up before flying away. I used a +1 diopter to get close to the bat while it hung on the ceiling and Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun mic for the squeaks and wing flutters.

In the past few years, a strange disease has been devastating bats across the Northeastern United States. Dubbed ‘White Nose Syndrome’ for the characteristic finding of a thin white fungus growing on the faces and wing membranes of the bats, this illness causes a high mortality.

Experts are worried, since the disease seems to be spreading and the death rates are so high. In some areas, more than 95% of bats have died. Some endangered bat species, such as the Indiana bat, could get pushed close to extinction if the disease cannot be stopped. No one knows for sure what is causing the disease – if it’s the white fungus or some other germ weakening the bats and allowing the fungus to grow.

Bats are important in the environment. Many bat species eat insects– such as moths and beetles which can damage crops. If large proportions of bats die off, there could be a greater reliance on harmful chemicals and pesticides to protect those crops.

Bats live in a different ‘world’ which might seem strange and frightening to some. Most bat species however are highly social – living in colonies for years. One bat researcher told me some bats can live up to 25 years! Bats make up 20% of all known mammal species, so there’s more of them than you might think. Mother bats usually just have one baby a year, and feed them milk to drink.

Bats don’t attack people or get tangled in someone’s hair. A healthy bat will try to avoid contact with humans if at all possible. A sick bat may have trouble flying and could be found on the ground. Like all wildlife, a bat should be respected and never handled without the proper equipment including durable gloves. A very small percentage of bats (usually 1% or less) might carry rabies. A scratch or a bite from a bat is a reason to see a doctor who would know about bat diseases – such as an Infectious Diseases specialist. The CDC rabies website gives some general advice on ‘What to do’ if a bat is found in your home.

So far experts don’t know exactly what is causing WNS or how to stop it. We’re hoping for some miracles soon to help these small but wonderful creatures.

Finally, Chapter 10 “Turning geography into history” is the story of how every other industry is benefiting from off shoring services to India; the IT success story acted as a catalyst; Internet offered the wherewithal; the global mindset of average Indians today (thanks to demographic dividend) and the government policies fueled the growth. Once again the book traces the “long revolution”  - Swiss Air starting a joint-venture with TCS though Airline Financial Support Services (APS) in SEEPZ Bombay in 1992; British Airways followed suit in 1996 (later becoming World Network Services (WNS); financial services major American Express and GE followed. Local entrepreneur jumped in – Raman Roy with SpectraMind, K Ganesh with CustomerAsset, Jerry Rao with mPhasis; later they were acquired by Wipro, ICICI and EDS respectively. In the process, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry was born.

Interestingly R & D outsourcing, starting with Pharmaceuticals R & D led to a whole range of companies starting their R & D arms India – GM, DuPont, Unilever, Volvo, Philips, LG and so on. IBM, GE, and Cisco were particularly focusing on large investment in R & D in India.

Engineering Services was the next. Bechtel started modest operation in 1994 and the headcount has touched 600 by 2006. Indian companies Wipro and HCL Technologies cashed in this opportunity.

Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) started in a big way; EvalueServe is a classic example that focused on patent related services. Management Consulting Services (including McKinsey) followed. Financial Services (Goldman Sachs) information Services (Thomson) and Legal Process outsourcing (LPO) followed – spanning a wide range of services.

In “Conclusion” the author talks of the role of the government – ECIL/ ITI / Government computer centers contributing to early technical staff of Wipro, DCM; IITs, NCST providing manpower. The restrictive follows hampering growth initially and supporting policies enabling spectacular growth. The challenge for the Indian IT industry is to sustain the growth – enter into products and technology in a big way. With the global meltdown and Satyam scam, the challenges have only increased. One hopes that the Indian IT industry will come out of those dark clouds with a renewed vigor and energy.

NYSE-listed WNS Holdings, one of India’s leading Indian outsourcing companies, will acquire Bangalore-based analytics services firm Marketics Technologies for $65 mn in an all-cash deal to consolidate its position in the fast-growing knowledge processing arena. The acquisition will supplement the knowledge business of WNS which provides market research, business and financial research, and analytics services. The existing clients of WNS are in the travel, banking, financial services and insurance industries. With the Marketics acquisition, WNS will add capability in the consumer goods, retail, and media and entertainment sectors. Marketics was started in 2003 by a group of young professionals with backgrounds in marketing, market research and information technology.

WNS will pay $30 mn at the closing of the deal and an additional earn-out payment of up to $35 mn over a 12-month period, financing the acquisition off its balance sheet. WNS has already made three acquisitions: Town and Country Assistance, an auto claims collection firm; ClaimsBPO, the India-based healthcare BPO business of GreenSnow from the US; and an Arizona-based mortgage BPO firm called Trinity Partners. Leading domestic investment bank Avendus Advisors was the advisor to the transaction.
