W.O.A. Metal Battle 2010: Capítulo México

Bases:

Se convoca a participar a todas las bandas de metal que cubran los siguientes requisitos:

• Que resida en territorio mexicano y cuyos integrantes sean mayoritariamente nacidos en México, mayores de edad y cuenten con pasaporte vigente. Mayoritariamente significa más del 50%.

• Que no tengan actualmente o próximo a firmar un contrato con sello discográfico alguno. Contratos de distribución no entran en esta categoría. (Este punto es flexible, los contratos por un disco por ejemplo, no aplican. La idea es que no estén “atados” a un sello.)

• Que tengan material propio con el que puedan cubrir un concierto de 30 minutos.

• Se requiere cubrir una inscripción de $1, 500 (Mil quinientos pesos moneda nacional, pago único), que se usarán para pagar servicios como renta, PA, producción y publicidad. Para mayores informes escribir un mail a blut_aus_metal@yahoo.com .

Las bandas que radiquen en algún punto del interior de la República Mexicana deberán llegar al DF el día que les toque su eliminatoria, por sus propios medios. ***Probablemente, y dependiendo de la cantidad de bandas que se inscriban, podríamos hacer eliminatorias regionales. Sin embargo, este punto aún es tentativo.

Premios:

• El primer lugar representará a México en la Vigésimoprimera edición del festival internacional Wacken Open Air, a llevarse a cabo los días 5, 6 y 7 de agosto de 2010. La banda ganadora competirá en el W.E.T Stage, en la final internacional del W.O.A Metal Battle.

Además, el Circo Volador ofrece al segundo lugar la oportunidad de grabar un disco en sus estudios. El compromiso final es la entrega de dos masters. Rock dreams ofrece 50 playeras al primer lugar, 30 al segundo y 20 al tercero. Dilemma ofrece a las bandas que queden en los primeros tres lugares la opción de abrir algún concierto, aunque esto se extiende a todo el universo de bandas participantes. Es decir, los primeros tres tienen prioridad en la búsqueda de bandas abridoras, pero todas tienen oportunidad. Metal Eye Foto ofrece también sus sus servicios a los tres primeros lugares, con detalles por definir más adelante.

Eliminatorias:

• En cada eliminatoria se contará con un mínimo de TRES jueces elegidos por la producción del concurso (referentes importantes en el mundo del metal: músicos, promotores) . El fallo de los mismos será inapelable e incontrovertible.

Los grupos, fechas de eliminatorias y demás posibles situaciones derivadas se harán públicos una vez que termine el periodo de inscripción.

Él o los conciertos de batalla se llevarán a cabo en el Circo Volador.

El orden en que tocarán las bandas se determinará vía sorteo abierto, el día de cada eliminatoria.

Una vez definidos los horarios, la impuntualidad será motivo de eliminación, sin excepciones.

Los resultados se darán a conocer al finalizar cada eliminatoria.

Las eliminatorias estarán abiertas al público.

Instrucciones y extras:

El ganador del concurso DEBERÁ PAGAR SUS GASTOS DE VIAJE HASTA ALEMANIA. Si se lograse algún tipo de apoyo económico, se anunciará en su momento.

En caso de que la banda ganadora no cubra con ese requisito en los tiempos acordados, mismos que se definirán con claridad en las semanas venideras, los organizadores se reservan el derecho a escoger a una banda que habiendo participado y demostrado buena calidad, pueda cubrir este requisito.

REST Architecture

REST was introduced in 2000 from a thesis written by Roy Fielding, one of the founders of web (HTTP). As the current architecture wasn’t able to make full use of the superiority of the original web design, the Representational Safe Transfer (REST) was introduced as a network-based architecture that could best utilize the merits of web.

Basics of REST

Simply put, REST is a HTTP URI + HTTP Method, which clearly states the target resource through URL and defines the operations of such relevant resource through Method.

Resource

One of the key features of REST is representing all resources as ‘Resource’. This Resource is expressed through HTTP URL. For example, a user named ‘bcho’ from a javastudy website can be expressed as http://www.javastudy.co.kr/users/bcho while a HP printing machine located at the 9^th floor of a Gangnam office can be expressed as http://printers/localtion/seoul/kangnamgu/9f/hp. In this way, all resources can be expressed through HTTP URL.

Action

Then how are the operations of the relevant resource represented? In this case, HTTP Method is utilized.

Shortcomings of REST

However, there are several shortcomings such as the number of available Methods is only 4. For example, Methods like ‘send email’ or ‘log write’ cannot clearly be expressed through HTTP Method.

As the existing programming style has taken an operation-oriented approach centered on functions or Methods, those methods conflict with the resource-based approaches that REST embraces. The reason for REST being called as architecture rather than a simple protocol is that it can be appropriately applied to resources that have CRUD (ex. DBMS).

Then how can these shortcomings be resolved?

As a matter of fact, CRUD is not enough to express all operations. To express operations with control or functional features, HTTP/PUT or POST Method is used or a functional approach is required. For example, a ‘send mail’ operation can be changed into a meaning of ‘create a mail to send it to someone’ through HTTP/POSThttp://www.xxx./sendmail/to/{emailaddress}.

Still, there are cases that cannot change the meaning of the context.

In these cases, HTTP/PUT or URL is used to grant the meaning of control. The grade of user ID bcho can be changed through the following.

For example, http://www.xxx/users/bcho/upgrade

In fact, the most difficult challenge in designing a REST-based architecture is how to define this URL. One of the merits of REST is that it is quite easy to grasp the meanings through this URL or HTTP Method. Therefore, much effort is required in defining the URL.

Pros & Cons

Pros

The existing web infrastructure can be utilized in tact.

This is one of the largest advantages. As the existing HTTP is used as it is, there is no need to break a firewall when making a remote calling and the load balancer equipment like L4 can be used in tact.

The exciting thing is that the web cache can be used as it is. Because every resource is expressed uniquely through URL, it can be stored within the web cache and especially operations that are selective can be returned by this cache without going through actual business transactions. Such features are strongly beneficial from performance and resource utilization perspectives.

Easy

Compared with the web service, which encompasses so many cumbersome SPECs like WS*-I, WS Reliable Messaging, WS Transaction, REST doesn’t need a separate SPEC. Generally REST is called as a ‘Defactor standard’, which only requires proper use of HTTP URL and Method.

Cons

No standard and, therefore, hard to manage

The reason that REST is drawing much public attention these days is because non enterprise companies like Google, Yahoo and Amazon are eyeing away from the complexity and difficult standards of web service. As the meanings of data don’t sound like mission critical business requirements, a standard that is easy enough to exchange data transactions would be satisfactory and doesn’t need to be at an enterprise-level. Also there is no company like vendors that wants to take the lead in creating a standard.

There are only standard-looking ones that are used frequently and being created tacitly. (These are called as ‘Defactor standard’.)

As the standards are ambiguous, it becomes a problem in managing them during development. Considering that a clear-cut standard paves the way for a development process or pattern to be created in accordance with several SPECs, a proprietary standard of REST should first be established and used to design a REST-based system. However, in some cases, a misunderstanding on the REST concept can place a REST flag on the wrong architecture. In fact, Flickr.com – a leading runner of WEB 2.0 – once evoked a controversy around REST architecture by putting the name, ‘hybrid REST’ on the API that was designed in a RPC style without internalizing the REST features.

As mentioned-above shortly, REST is not a protocol like web service. It is architecture. Because it is a resource-based architecture, system should be designed suitable to the REST concept.

Use of Alternative Key

For example, resource is usually represented by one row from the DB. In the case of DB, primary keys exist in the format of complex keys. (Multiple columns are combined to become one PK, in this case) Although this can be a valid design for the DB, HTTP URL has a hierarchical structure according to / and, therefore, such representation becomes unnatural.

For example, if the PK of DB is defined as “residence registration # of the householder” + “region” + “name,” there is no problem expressing like such in the DB. But this way of definition becomes unnatural (having a strange meaning) when being expressed in REST because it would look like userinfo/{ residence registration # of the householder }/{ region }/{ name}.

In addition, there are many problems in assigning a unique key to a resource and one way to resolve this problem is to use an alternative key (AK). In this case, a unique key with no meaning acts like a key and be used in a field called ‘AK’ within the DB table. Already Google’s REST adopted an architecture using such kind of AK.

However, adding an AK field to the DB means the overall DB design needs to be changed. If this is the case, an architectural approach is required when using REST because the architecture of the overall system must be changed for REST.

Other options to make a RESTful design can include 1) techniques that express the relations between resources through href (link), 2) versioning method, 3) naming rule, 4) cross cutting concern transaction by using ESB, 5) routing, etc. The architecture design method and highly-advanced REST will be covered in the next contribution, titled ‘Highly-Advanced REST Architecture’.

Misunderstanding on REST

REST = HTTP + XML Protocol?

I once proposed to have a discussion on REST at one local community web site on the grounds of designing a highly-advanced REST system for the project. Then, I became to realize that most people simply understood REST as something sending an XML by using HTTP.

Never

REST is an architecture that expresses the resource by best-utilizing the web features. (It is not a protocol) And of course, it must use HTTP. However, XML is not mandatory. It is still ok to use other languages like JSON or YAML. Depending on how well the resource is represented and the web features are utilized determine a correct understanding on the REST architecture concept.

The reason why I am writing this paper is because there is no document that explains the REST concept or principle well enough.

Is REST easier than WebService?

Not exactly. Of course, REST would be much easier than Web Service if being developed from scratch. Because creating a proprietary standard, designing a message with a simple XML, and simply sending that message through HTTP would be required only. However this is looking from a service provider prospective. For those who actually use this service, any XML or JSON data being returned upon request to the HTTP client need to be parsed one by one.

What about web service? Thanks to its clear-cut standard, a web service will be created automatically once the coding takes place based on POJO or JAX-WS. Especially the client stub can be created automatically through WSDL according to the given service contract. For this reason, even though users don’t know the protocol spec at all, web service can be easily utilized as if calling and using a java library.

From my opinion, it looks easier to develop a web service rather than REST. The simplest and the most productive option is a WS-I based web service that is simple enough and well arranged.

Prospect of REST

Not much demand for REST exists in Korea yet. Maybe this is because of users trying to avoid designing highly complicated system or maybe because not much demand has been created for an open-style system.

However already prestigious overseas web sites are offering services under a REST-based architecture. Amazon, one of the representative open API companies is planning to do a REST-based migration on the open APIs previously developed with web service. Although REST is a defector standard, it is known as a difficult standard, which is unavoidable in the web world.

In addition, REST rising from the open side is about to be included in the next JEE6 version as being added as a JAX-RS (JSR311), one of J2EE Specs. (For an open source, REST is included in Apache CXF and a framework called ‘Jersey’ of Sun. Even though REST is translated into a specification, it would be a specification about ‘how’ to implement and still its flexibility will stay unchanged.) A specification called, ‘WADL’ which is similar to ‘WSDL’ of web service has been released as a standard for REST. However, ‘WADL’ only indicates URLs for REST service and yet representing the schema of every message within the actual operations. For this reason, it is right to say that there is no standardized service contract for REST yet, and it is difficult to judge that whether this would serve as an advance or disadvantage in the future.

Conclusion

For its advantage of simplicity and maximum utilization of web features, REST is being spread out surprisingly in the overseas region. As a rare technology developed from the open side, REST has even been adopted as a standard technology (JSR-311).

Still, due to its strong flexibility, REST cannot be controlled or managed easily and, for this reason, hasn’t yet been widely used in the Enterprise System but instead being mostly used for service system. Due to a lack of understanding on the REST concept in Korea as well as inactivated open API, REST is not a popular option yet.

However, it is time for local developers to make preparation for using REST as this concept is becoming main-stream among prestigious international service companies.

Cette accès est de plus en plus utilisé (par exemple le plugin feedly pour firefox).

What does Whole Organisation Approach to eCPD look like?

Last week I was involved with the LSIS eCPD programme event in Birmingham, and one of the activities was asking the delegates about Whole Organisation Approaches, and what would it look like if they were successful in creating a whole organisation approach to eCPD.

We put the answers on post-it notes and then stuck them onto a flipchart, a photo of which I have uploaded to Flickr, and then used the ‘notes’ feature within Flickr to label the notes. (You will need to click on the image to see this effect).

As much as anything I want to show here how I have made use of simple technologies to create a learning object. I have used post-it notes, pens and a flipchart (which won’t scare any anti-technology teachers) – I have then photographed the output using a basic compact camera (again a anti-technology teacher could get a learner to do this if necessary), and finally I have uploaded it to Flickr and added the notes – which is quite easy and free to do.

The output can then embedded into a blog (like here) or a VLE area, it can start a discussion, be used for reflection etc.

Web-Oriented Arrchitecture is more and more becoming part of the everyday lives of architects, companies and developers. In this article WOA get used to help solve some of SOA’s issues.

I’ve been to the W:O:A two consecutive times now, once in 2008 and then in 2009. Since I’m a fan of Heavy Metal, it is no wonder that I found that blog to be quite the treat. The author really put some effort into creating a real guide to W:O:A, including transportation and location issues, the camp and festival site itself just to name a few. The variety of photos shot in 2008 by the author let you feel a small portion of the intoxicating atmosphere in the “Holy Wacken Land”, but then again you’d have to take my word for it that it’s more fun actually being there and enjoy the biggest Metal festival in the world. Trying to encompass such an experience in a “few” words is next to impossible, yet the author still tries, (and succeeds) to create a vivid picture of the life on the camping site. If there are other metalheads out there who are thinking about having the time of their lives at the W:O:A, definitely check it out! Naturally I’m already planning to go next year, but I’ll have to make haste, since the tickets sell out pretty fast!

The four dudes of Thai Rockband Retrospect are breaking down the borders for the first time since their start. They’re on the bill of the next Wacken Open Air in Germany. Nothing special? Well, consider the fact it’s their first trip to the continent, the festival attracts about 70.000 guests and it has been sold out ever since november last year. Are they up for succes? A quick/small recap of their career so far, so even the people who don’t know them can easily get to know them.

Retrospect is a band residing in Bangkok, Thailand. Ever since their start in 2000, the boys – or guys – from Retrospect have been able to astonish people with their own Retrorian style. (Retrorian is also the name of their fanclub and the song Yes Sir! is kind of their fanclub chant :p) Their first EP called For Your Ears Only got released through ScreamLab Records in the summer of 2003. It immediately gave attention to the young band and an English Demo called For Your Ears Anytime was a fact. Not that much later they got signed by Genie Records, a GMM Grammy subsidiary and one of the leading Thai record Labels, and were able to put out their first full-length Unleashed in 2007. Their first DVD: The First Concert, showed the boys in their natural habitat and showed a lot of their talent by letting them do duets and featurings with other Genie stars as Da Endorphine and Tao from Sweet Mullet

More recently, in July 2008, came the follow up to their debut: Rise and in December of the same year they released their second DVD/VCD of the new tour called Rise Now! They easily end up in the Thai charts with their music-videos and singles and often stand out in-between the more Pop-orientated Thai culture. Retrospect took Thailand by storm and will not rest before the rest of the world has heard of them. Like I said before, they’re booked for the giant Rock-festival Wacken Open Air in Germany and so their popularity outside Thailand can only start to increase. (They’re playing on the 31st of July, second day of Wacken between Tristania and Mago de Oz on the Party Stage)

Thailand is multicultural. Pop, Rock and Rap easiy go together and are incorporated in the same song. Retrospect tries grabbing the best things out of every genre and put them together at their live shows. Either classical VieTrio, beatboxing Chin Chinawuth or pop rocking Da Endorphine are easily mixed into Retrospect’s harder music.In their latest DVD they even featured one of their youngest fans: Poom, screaming along with Singer Nap’s screams. That said, Nap’s screams are sure to give everyone goosebumps and the vocal parts are easy to sing along to. Now all we have to do left is study Thai and get to know what they’re actually singing about.

I keep on wondering why does the laws like these in Muslim countries always revolve around how men’s inabilities to control their dicks in their pants?

Violence against women is about power and control.

According to Women’s Aid Organization, there are various forms of abuse:

• Psychological and emotional abuse
• Social abuse
• Financial abuse
• Sexual abuse
• Physical abuse

I have blogged a few pieces on true stories of abused women within my circle of friends and it still leave me in awe how these women still accept this form of treatment as “normal”. I just discovered recently how an auntie of mine was slapped by her husband when she came back a bit late from a dinner with her friends.  She was late by 15 minutes. There are mobile phones they can use to check on the wife. Still…

How could they allow their self esteemed be repressed? Dont the women have rights too in the household? The children would surely witness these treatments and most would be traumatized. They will grow up with certain stigmas and perceptions.

These husbands expect the wives to be a sex-kitten in bed at a press of a button. And all these after a full day of being the ultimate teacher to the children, bear him children (boys are the preferred gender to carry on their names), world class chef, a driver, a nurse, a counsellor, a clerk, a banker and working 8 hours a day in the office.

Some husbands dont even know where their wives’ buttons are after being married for donkey years. How pathetic that can be?

It’s been nearly a month since Thai Rockers from Retrospect performed on the big Wacken Festival in Germany, and still we can’t really find any footage of the concert. I’m trying my best to show you things, but they’re not making it easy for me.

The guys of Retrospect, however, are releasing things little by little, and I hope that we won’t have to wait very long anymore before we’re able to seen footage of their European Debut!

What could the wacken version possibly be? I hope that they played the Run in their Encore. At least those lucky bastards at Wacken got Pror Wa Ruk, Yes Sir! and Mai Mee Ter. I’m filled with envy.

After these whole two weeks of searching the net, finding absolutely no footage of their Wacken performance, I came across some comments and noticed the band has made quite some impact.

People calling Retrospect their highlight – knowing there were over 200 bands on the festival site – and saying they have to come to England – or any other place in the world – and tour. As well as comments on Last.fm Stating they should tour the world together with label-mates Sweet Mullet. Now all we are wondering about is: why won’t they?

I also couldn’t keep myself from posting this thingy. It looked like they had some fun, will it mean they’ll do anything to return?

Gestern, am Sonntag, den 02.08.09 bin ich aus dem beschaulichen Wacken wieder da, dass von 77000 Fans des Heavy Metal zum 20. Mal eingenommen wurde.
Vorweg eines: Es war ein wahnsinnig geiles Fest!
Angefangen hat das ganze (ich berichtete) am Dienstag. Ohne Staus sind wir in Wacken nach ca. einer Stunde und fünfzehn Minuten angekommen, haben uns zu unseren Freunden auf den Campingplatz begeben, die schon am Montag da waren und uns einen Platz freigehalten haben und haben unsere Zelte aufgeschlagen.
Dann war es soweit, das Auto stand neben dem Zelt, alles war fertig, das erste Bier rückte nahe.
Das Ende vom Lied war dann, dass wir uns am Dienstag ziemlich aus dem Leben geschossen haben, was ja aber nicht weiter schlimm war, da die Konzerte in Wacken erst donnerstags beginnen.
Am Mittwoch waren wir alle Sieben dem Abend entsprechend ziemlich fertig und verkatert, bei einem von uns (nein – nicht bei mir) hat das solche Ausmaße angenommen, dass er nachmittags vom Stuhl auf dem er saß zur Seite umgefallen ist, an Ort und Stelle eingeschlafen ist und – ich als Sani war ja vor Ort – in der stabilen Seitenlage erstmal angemalt wurde. Als er dann nach einer Stunde immer noch nicht aufgewacht war haben wir uns dazu entschlossen, ihn den am Festival Stationierten Ärzten und Sanis vorzustellen, die ihn direkt erstmal behandelt haben – und ihn herrlich ausgelacht haben. Fotos hiervon werdet ihr mal aus Mitleid mit dem armen Kerl nicht finden, wenngleich sie vorhanden sind.
Naja, mittwochs jedenfalls waren wir alle nicht zu viel in der Lage und vegetierten mit einigen Bier, Whiskey und Wodkas so vor uns hin, um dann am Donnerstag wieder Fit zu sein und uns die Konzerte ansehen zu können.
Am Donnerstagnachmittag war es dann soweit, die Band Skyline ist aufgetreten, die eigentlich nicht mehr existiert – nun fragen sich sicherlich einige, wieso sie dann auftreten; das ist leicht zu beantworten. Diese Band war die erste, die jemals in Wacken spielte und das Festival begründete. Auf der Bühne war demnach auch der Bassist der Band und der Festivalgründer Thomas Jensen. Während des Konzertes gaben sich Größen des deutschen Heavy Metal die Klinke in Form des Mikros in die Hand – so waren neben Thomas Jensen Doro Pesch, „Onkel“ Tom Angelripper oder der Dudelsackspieler von Subway To Sally, dessen Namen ich nicht kenne, auf der Bühne. Von Doro wurde hier die offizielle Wacken-Hymne zum ersten Mal angespielt.
Weiter ging es direkt im Anschluss mit einem grandiosen Konzert von Schandmaul, sowie einigen weiteren geilen Konzerten und dem letzten Konzert in der Geschichte der Band „Running Wild“.
Dann kam der Freitag – der wohl härteste Festivaltag für unseren Geschmack. Bands wie Motörhead, In Flames, Amon Amarth, Hammerfall, Dragonforce oder Heaven and Hell waren am Start.
Auch am Samstag waren wieder unglaublich viele geniale Bands auf dem Plan, zudem haben wir uns dazu entschieden, das enorm vergrößerte Gelände mit neuem Mittelaltermarkt mal genauer unter die Lupe zu nehmen und alles zu erkunden. Wir alle haben uns ein schönes kühles Franziskaner Weizen gegönnt, dass eine sehr willkommene Abwechslung zu unseren vierzehn Paletten Bier-Bière Export aus Holland ist, das schon beim Aufmachen irgendwie schaal schmeckt. Sven und ich konnten jedoch an diesem Tag nicht so wirklich trinken, da wir ja am Sonntagmorgen die ganze Truppe wieder heil nach Hause bringen mussten.
Dann die Ernüchterung – trotz frühen Abfahrens waren in Hamburg vor dem Elbtunnel 28km Stau. Da ich Flo ja nur in Hamburg zum Hauptbahnhof bringen musste und mich recht gut in Hamburg auskenne haben wir uns getrennt und es ging dann für Flo und mich ab Stellingen durch Altona, St. Pauli und die Neustadt zum Hbf, so konnte Flo was von Hamburg sehen und wir waren gerade noch rechtzeitig da.
Auch unsere Nachbarn auf dem Zeltplatz waren super gut drauf (mit Ausnahme einiger „Hopper“, die sich zum Saufen und Provozieren auf dem Campingplatz niedergelassen haben). So haben wir uns gleich fürs nächste Jahr mit den Nachbarn verabredet.
Auch haben wir uns dazu entschieden, dass wir im nächsten Jahr mehrere Festivals unsicher machen wollen. Neben dem Wacken Open Air (W:O:A) stehen das Summerbreeze in Dinkelsbühl in Bayern, das Graspop Metal Meeting in Dessel bei Antwerpen in Belgien und das Metalcamp in Slovenien im Raum. Welche davon zusätzlich zum W:O:A es werden oder gar alle, das werden wir uns noch überlegen, aber als eingespieltes Festival-Team müssen wir weiter machen, das steht für uns alle fest.
