Veio a censura!
Quero matar Nazistas!!!!

In the time when I had my first PC, I remember the game that was the father of all those first person games. The first game to use this perspective with a lot of blood and deaths. Only the character running through a scenario with a lot of corridors that just look liked a weird labyrinth. In those times there wasn’t this gay thing of censure and that was cool. We could shot the Nazis, spreading their blood through the scenario and have fun.
Later came Doom, the best on first person games! Aliens, demons, ugly stuffs, etc. After this we had Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Counter Strike (CS), and the games have been going more and more perfect through the time. More blood, more mutilated corpses, more reality and… Came the censure! Some dumbass thought that the younger people would get disturbed, and on a craziness attack would gone out on the streets shooting “Nazis” and “Aliens” on the streets! I knew younger ones of 13 and 14 years old who played Wolfenstein and today, and never, invaded some place to shoot people calling they Nazis!
So, as the games get an evolution, Wolfenstein wouldn’t leave behind. In August was released the most recent mission of B.J. – Main character of the game – where he’s sent to the Reich Castle to investigate rumors about a new and powerful weapon of the Nazis.
I want to kill Nazis!!!!

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

As a kid, I’ve played Wolfenstein 3D on the SNES and I loved it, in fact, I still love the game.

Unfortunately, I never got to play the sequel, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, so when I heard that a new Wolfenstein game entitled Wolfenstein was going to be released, I was kind of excited. I didn’t buy it though, for various reasons, and I forgot about it. Then, one day, I was looking around on the the Playstation Store and saw that a demo for Wolfenstein had be released. Deciding that this was a good chance to see if the game was good or not, I downloaded it and installed it onto the PS3.

The game starts out with the protagonist, B.J., on a German battleship in World War II pretending to be an officer on the ship. His cover gets blown, and proceeds to fight with the soldiers. It gets to the point where he’s cornered and then a medallion in his pocket glows, and he takes it out and somehow, all the soldiers in front of him are incinerated. He then proceeds to steal a plane and flies off the battleship before it blows up.

He lands and starts to get chased by German soldiers, and that’s when the game begins.

At first, it seems like a typical FPS. The health system is one where you recover your health if you don’t get hurt for a while (damage is indicated by a border on your screen. However, what makes this game a bit different is the medallion that B.J. gets, which allows the use of some sort of magical powers. In the demo, the two powers that I got to use was a power that revealed hidden passages (which really means that when a wall has the correct symbol on it, I can activate the power and walk through the wall) and make enemies easier to spot, and another power that slowed down time for everyone except for B.J..

So I play through the demo, shooting through enemies and sometimes using the medallion. At the end of it, I have to say that the demo did not leave me with a very good impression of Wolfenstein. The demo presented to me a very typical FPS that uses a gimmicky medallion to try to spice things up. The gimmick of the medallion though, is also boring, since time slowdown, and secret passages are nothing new. The story was also presented in a very unclear and messy fashion, and didn’t hook me in at all. The demo certainly showed that Wolfenstein might be an interesting game, but it does a very poor job of advertising the game, and at the end of it, it left me with the impression that Wolfenstein was a very mediocre FPS with a poor gimmick and a very messy execution of a story.

So the demo has convinced me that Wolfenstein isn’t worth a buy, but perhaps the demo is just doing a bad job at marketing. So for those of you that have played the game, is the demo actually correct about the real game, or is does it just do a bad job at advertising a good game?

As much as I think Mortal Kombat was/is a pretty shitty fighting game, it deserves our attention. F

As much as I think Mortal Kombat was/is a pretty shitty fighting game, it deserves our attention. For those of us in the Capcom or SNK school of fighting games Mortal Kombat always seemed pretty stripped down. Every character had identical regular moves and were only differentiated by their specials and fatalities. Out of 7 total characters, two of them even looked identical. I’ll get to the fatalities in a bit, but mostly Mortal Kombat made for a pretty shallow fighting game compared to its competition. And, I guess, what’s even more striking about Mortal Kombat is that the franchise stayed this way for some time but maintained a level of popularity that is more or less completely incongruent with most other Acclaim/Midway titles. I don’t know many gamers who would consider the Midway logo as much more than a seal of mediocrity. Sort of like the Nintendo Seal of Quality today (burn).

So many choices! Decidedly less stereotypes, though! Progress?

The original Mortal Kombat for SNES was a big deal, though. I remember crowding around the TV the first time a friend rented this game. I would have been in grade 4 or 5. There were so many rumors about the game floating around in our tiny, misinformed heads:

“I hear this game is SUPER GORY“.

“Yeah, but Nintendo are a bunch of pussies and made the blood look like sweat! Pussies!”

“I hear on Sega you can see Sonya’s boobies!”

“Oh yeah? I heard that in the arcade version you can do sex with her!”

“Cool!!!” (awkward boners abound)

“I heard that there’s a code to make it even more bloody!”

“Chris’ brother heard from a magazine that if your parents split up they’ll each buy you this game to prove that they love you!”

“No way!”

I actually wrote a completely different review before thinking about the ways that Mortal Kombat has been influential. Just think about your life with Video Games at the age of 10. If you were a console kid like I was, you probably had your Ninja Turtles, Double Dragon, Mario, Ninja Gaiden, Tetris… I dunno. Ducktails? For many of us Mortal Kombat was the first Hyperviolent game we ever played. Everything before this was cartoony. Even though the greyish-brown bio-chunks that flew out of fighters in the Super Nintendo version didn’t look like blood, our imagination certainly filled in the gaps just fine. But here were people, digitally rendered and motion captured, being impaled by spikes, set on fire, having their spinal cords ripped out. And it was happening in our living room. Even if you were from a family with a computer, Wolfenstein came out the same year as Mortal Kombat. Doom came out in 1993. Sure, some PC games had covered serious subjects like rape and brutal violence before, but few games were as accessible to enterprising kids as this holy trinity of gore.

Certainly, by today’s standards, Mortal Kombat is pretty tame. After playing games like Soldier of Fortune where each body part has a number of articulation points for having limbs sawn off, it almost seems as cartoony as those older games. Fallout 3 had hilarious limbular explosions in HD slow-motion! But Mortal Kombat was likely one of the first games that you or someone you know wasn’t allowed to play. It was a precursor to the congressman-based fervor of Grand Theft Auto. It played a leading role in the eventual development of the ESRB. Sure, a lot of parents ignore ESRB ratings even today, but they cried out for a rating system in the first place largely thanks to kids bringing Mortal Kombat home.

It’s other “legacy” is the more dubious one of ridiculous announcers. Fatality, Babality, Finish Him, Toasty… they all lead to the Headshot, Multikill, Double Kill, Running Riot, Killamanjaro, and Unstoppables of today. I could actually do without these though, so thanks Mortal Kombat.

Gender roles, you guys.

So yeah, it’s a shitty fighting game, but it might very well have changed the landscape of gaming as we know it. That’s pretty neat. And with the demise of Midway and the sale of the Mortal Kombat IP to Warner Brothers, I’m not sure we’ll see a return of the shock-value tuned, mediocre experience that so defined the series. Who knows, someone make even take the initiative to turn it into something worth playing again.

Earlier this evening, I finally finished the game, “Wolfenstein”, the new one that was just released earlier this year. I was pretty impressed with it. Most of the game was pretty easy but toward the end of the game got wicked hard. I played the game on the “Uber” mode, which means it’s a lot more challenging than the regular “Difficult” mode.

This game is actually a sequel to 2001’s, “Return to Castle Wolfenstein” that was released for the PC/CD-ROM only. As everyone knows, the Wolfenstein games were originally made for the PC years back. The classic “Wolfenstein 3D”, which was one of the very first, first person shooter games ever made which became a huge hit in the early 90’s.

The Wolfenstein games were very controversial, mainly because of its Nazi content. It’s where you play this character named B.J. Blazkowicz and walk around killing any Nazi in sight.

It’s the same with the newer “Wolfenstein” games, except the only thing is, there has been science fiction added to these stories. You fight more monsters in the newer “Wolfenstein” games and use more fictional weapons that are made up.

Back to the new “Wolfenstein” (2009) game, you still get to play the game’s main character, B.J. Blazkowicz. The plot to this game is that you must stop the Nazis from using the power of the Black Sun, so they can have these powers and become stronger. So you must team up with resistance fighters to work with Caroline Becker, to destroy the Nazis and the machine at the Black Sun.

The graphics to the game were good. Storyline was good. Action and gameplay was good, but they made a lot of it too easy for a Wolfenstein game. That’s my only complaint.

My favorite level of the entire game is when I go to the Nazi – Zeppelin blimp thing. That was way cool walking through the Zeppelin to kill Nazis on that thing. They did a good job with that level. The game had a cool ending, and yes I think they did leave open for another game.

The thing that impressed me the most out of the game, was the game’s musical score. This is some of the best musical scoring of a game I ever heard. I think it was the music that got me addicted to the game. The music was definitely Nazi like and kind of creepy.

I hope the video game industry would make a Nazi/World War II type of game that would be more realistic. They shouldn’t rip off Indiana Jones by mixing sci-fi with it. I think these games borrowed so much from “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, it was obvious.

It was a good game. It still could have been a little bit better but I had a fun time with it.

It’s hard to believe that the Wolfenstein series has been going on for so long – since 1981, according to Wikipedia, with its first FPS game, Wolfenstein 3D, being released in 1992. Now the latest chapter in the Nazi-killing saga, Wolfenstein, is out on the XBox 360. However, while Wolfenstein is a decent game, a bit of repetitiveness goes a long way in keeping the game from perfection.

In the game, you take on the role of secret agent B.J. Blazkowicz. After discovering a mystical medallion during a mission, B.J. is sent undercover to investigate a dig site near the town of Isenstadt, where the Nazis are mining crystals that power the medallion. The dig site turns out to be more than a hunt for some pretty gems, however – the Nazis are attempting to access a mystical parallel dimension, called the Black Sun, in an attempt to harness its supernatural power in their scheme for world domination. Hooking up with the Kreisau Circle (a rebel group) and The Golden Dawn (a mystical order), B.J. sets out to foil the Nazi plot.

Given that this is a first-person shooter, it won’t be too surprising to anyone that you get a lot of guns to shoot around in Wolfenstein. Most of them are real-life World War II weapons, but a few fictional weapons, like the Tesla Gun (a lightning gun) and a particle cannon (which looks and sounds like it would be more at home in Ghostbusters than a World War II game) help bring some sci-fi shooting action into the game. In addition, you can use that medallion I mentioned earlier to help you out, employing powers such as a mystical shield and the ability to slow down time. All of these things can be upgraded with money found throughout the game.

There’s no doubt that Wolfenstein is quite a fun game. The campaign mode is nicely done, providing a fair variety of enemies to face off against. The levels are also very well-created, with both the normal areas (a European city) and the outlandish ones (the alternate dimension) feeling very real somehow. The online multiplayer mode provides even more fun, and playing death matches and objective missions never seems to get old, though the class-based system is somewhat restrictive.

The major flaw of the game, however, is that things tend to get somewhat repetitive in single-player mode. To borrow a line from Aldo Raine, Brad Pitt’s character in Inglourious Basterds, for the most part, you do one thing and one thing only: killing Nazis. Don’t get me wrong, that’s a lot of fun, but when that’s pretty much all you do, it gets a bit dull after a while. And while there are several different types of enemies to kill, they just don’t have enough variety to keep you fully interested the whole way through. The multiplayer mode helps make up for this, though.

Ultimately, Wolfenstein isn’t a perfect game, or even a great one, but it’s a solid one that deserves a look from fans of the series and FPS fans in general.

Overall Rating:

Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum.

* добавя нивата от “Spear of Destiny” т.е 21 нови карти;
* 5 нови боса;
* Нов враг – призраци;
* Поддръжка на домашно направени карти;
* Зумване на картата в играта вече става с двойно почукване върху екрана;
* Секция с любопитни факти от историята на id Software;
* Скрол в менюто за избор на карта;

Hello Greg,

Where have you been?
Why is there a 2500 word look back at half-life posted?
Whatever happened to the Wolfenstein Retrospective?

Some things are best left unsaid.
Needless to say i applied for a Internship at Edge and spent the last four days,

writing a 2500 word review

making a double page spread InDesign

making a splash page in PS

writing 750 words on why EDGE should hire me

Yes I will write part two of that Retrospective and no I didn’t get selected for the Internship, life goes on though kids no regrets and I won’t let a setback like that keep me from writing and doing what I love.
Besides I already spent all of today in the bath crying while eating this months copy of EDGE and cursing them.
So on and upward to quote the great Bill Hicks in a poem he once wrote in 1988

“I need to be reminded where I’m going
I need to be reminded why I’m here
I need to be reminded where I came from
I need to be reminded not to fear.”

think that over and I’ll be posting as soon as your done
Peace and love x

The wolfenstein series started with stealth action as opposed to the FPS secret nazi gold finding ass kicking we were used to The stealth action was among the first around beating Hideo Kojima’s metal gear series by a good 6 years! started way back when sprites ruled the platform it was developed in 1981 By MUSE software created by Silas Warner for the Apple II , Dos, Atari 400/800 & the beautiful commodore 64, Along with the Title He wrote the game’s engine and a sound engine called “the voice” The gameplay required our nameless hero to complete 60 random levels/rooms on 5 floors with up to 8 ranks being earnt for completing the hardening levels the player could utilise stealth by stealing the nazi uniforms and blending in with the guards he can shoot or run away from them the player is equipped with a pistol and bullets found from a dead cell mate and must try and escape the castle with the secret war plans and escape alive among with the top down stealth our hero could frisk the guards who even spoke due to Silas’s creation of the “the voice” we had low tech recordings of german reactions so we could be fully immersed in the game the game was well received so muse went about creating a sequel in 1984 by the name of

beyond castle wolfenstein

This had more of a focus on the plot and our hero was tasked with the assassination of Hitler this time around The guard A.I was improved you required passes to enter some rooms and the addition of a knife helped dispose of those pesky SS officers more discreetly and even the sound effect library even got an update with yet more recordings of German responses and naughty words! after this title Muse software released a few titles the same year and closed down in 1987 Silas moved on to MicroProse and worked on different titles this is where the series was picked up by John D. Carmack who established id software who 5 years later set about turning the title around with wolfenstien 3d stay tuned for the second part of the Wolfenstein Restospective this friday! and be sure to tell 2Fifty7 what you think peace. x

Hey there, how was the game “wolfenstein 2″? I have just completed it twice. Nice one in my opinion.

Cool affordable graphics, If you are having 8600GT or equivalent card then you will be able to run the game with high graphic and anti-aliasing. I have 9500GT 1GB and the game was sooo smooth like a red hot knife through butter.

Nice weapons and upgrades really make them deadly. All weapons can be upgraded from black markets in exchange of gold, collected from different levels during game play. Personally I like the mp4 with silenced attachment.

The medallion concept is great. When fully upgraded, it will have the power to show all enemies through solid objects, the shield will deflect all bullets to the shooter and all nearby enemy will be destroyed like a 5000 years old mummy. The medallion will also slow down enemies and a fully upgraded slow motion force can also convert maximum enemies into the statue of ash. And the damage power is also remarkable, once activated, the bullet will be able to hit enemies, hiding behind any solid object.

The story is also good and the concept of “black sun dimension” is very interesting to me. There are lots of secrect hidden in the game and you will not be able to upgrade the medallion, without finding secrets named “the book of tomes” . The AI system is also very impressive. Facing them in game was like facing real life enemies, as tough they have human brains.
