One of the only annoying things about being a Personal Shopper is when people ask me what I do. One summer’s afternoon a couple of months ago, I was with friends in my local pub having Sunday lunch – I was fairly hung-over and not feeling my best. The weather wasn’t great that day so I’d slung on my bleached boyfriend jeans and a t-shirt. I looked fine, but as I say to my clients “not every day is a fashion parade”!

Well, the next thing one of my friends tells me is that a crowd of her friends are coming down to join us. They arrived and the usual introductions ensued and then the question came, “So Fi, what do you do?” And I told him what I did…. Now I don’t know whether it’s because people get a bit defensive when they know you tell others what to wear for a living – but the familiar response came back to me… “Oh I haven’t made an effort today – I just flung on the first thing I could find that was clean. I don’t usually look like this…”

© Lyllyflow | Dreamstime.com

Can I be honest? I really don’t care less what people are wearing unless they are my clients, or if a person has specifically asked my opinion on something (well that’s a bit of a lie, I do notice people, but usually it’s because they look fabulous or dreadful. For example if I see a photo of a celebrity in a magazine on the “Red Carpet” wearing a bad dress then I will probably say to myself “Sack the stylist!!” But I don’t notice what the average person sitting opposite me on the tube has on!). Anyway, back to the guy in the pub… he then said to me, ”Oh you’re a personal shopper, well let’s see what you’re wearing then!” He made me get up and do a twirl – can you imagine! I actually wanted to say “Well I’m a bit hung-over and I really couldn’t be bothered today”, but I couldn’t because people assume if you’re a personal shopper you’ll always look fabulous! But really that’s double standards – I can’t judge him, but he can judge me. He and his friends then quizzed me about shopping and fashion for the next 2 hours (can I mention they were all men!) – no wonder I exaggerated my hang-over symptoms and made my excuses to leave before they moved on to the next pub, I was mentally exhausted!

Anyway, the reason I mentioned the above is because I feel a little guilty. After saying I don’t judge people, well… I was walking to the tube a couple of mornings ago on the way to work – it was pretty early so I was in a world of my own. It was pouring with rain (of course) so I had my umbrella completely covering my eye line as my jeans and new ankle boots were getting soaked. But something caught my eye. Ahead of me I saw shoes and then shock horror – there was a lady in front of me wearing 10 denier black tights! The woman was probably in her early 50s – she had a great figure and was dressed nicely but I judged her! I wondered why on earth she was wearing tights that made her look so 90s /a woman of the night. If it had been the evening then fair enough, but for day time they seemed a little bit old-fashioned on her (N.B. I know for some, 10 deniers are making a come-back right now, but they’re to be worn in a “fashiony” way with 80s style polka dots and an amazing pair of shoes for example, not with a red knee-length A-line skirt and court shoes!). It made me think about how such small things like the wrong pair of tights or a tatty handbag for example, can make an outfit look dated or less “polished”. I wanted to run up to her and tell her to nip to M&S and buy herself some 50 or 80 denier opaque tights (taking inspiration from Twiggy’s look in their new advert – I think she looks amazing in her pink military inspired coat and black tight ensemble) and then her over-all look would be so different. Obviously I didn’t, I kept my brolly low and my opinions to myself.

Insider tip –

Opaque tights are fantastic for a number of reasons – they are incredibly flattering, as the higher the denier the slimmer your legs look; they suddenly make an outfit look much more on trend and dressed down – I wear much shorter dresses with opaque tights than bare legs, I just feel less on show (plus you don’t need to shave your legs)!

Who does the best tights? Personally I would recommend Wolford (www.wolfordshop.co.uk) – their satin deluxe opaques as seen in Vogue either in 50 or 80 denier, are amazing! Also head to M&S as they have a great selection of tights too, starting from £3 (www.marksandspencer.com).

Proof some people have too much money Would you pay £199 for a pair of tights… er, no is the a

Proof some people have too much money

Would you pay £199 for a pair of tights… er, no is the answer.

Hosiery house Wolford is releasing a pair of 100 denier tights, complete with tiered layers of fringing from the calf to the ankle.

You are guaranteed to make an impression in these, but is the fringing made of real fairies hair or spun by ancient mermaids? Thought not. So why the price tag Wolford?

Does the hosiery company not realise we are in a recession? I struggle to justify £8 fair trade bamboo tights from Boots, even though they satisfy my eco-c0nscience.

Tights are a frivolous wear for a month kinda deal, not an investment. Sainsbury’s three pack for £5 does the job a treat.

And don’t even get me started on the ‘L’ word. The amount of times I have pulled on a brand new pair of tights, only for them to instantly ladder is uncountable. Now I am not in the least bit annoyed at this (£5 for three, remember), but what if I’d just paid off a whopping £199 credit card bill… on tights?

I would be more than a little bit mad. I’d be green. Films would be written about the incident: The Rise of the Female Hulk.

Wolford's Laura tights

Not to mention what little they would go with. Few of us are blessed with a figure that can pull off leggings or tights on their own. I know I don’t.

However, don’t let me put you off. If you’re house is made of gold and you have dwarves for entertainment, then here is how to waste your money… www.tightsplease.co.uk.

They also have a cheaper (£27) grey and flower print pair of tights named Laura, that don’t quite work. How apt?

Alternatively, you could give your money to a good cause. I hear The Laura Davies Charity is in need of donations.

I live in skirts and dresses. I hate trousers; I hate the way they make me look and feel so I avoid

I live in skirts and dresses. I hate trousers; I hate the way they make me look and feel so I avoid them like the plague. This arrangement suits me and, generally, my dress/skirt habit causes little fuss. Aside from the tight situation and what has become a fight to find pairs that fit and are to my liking.

Last year I bought a few pairs of Wolford and Falke tights. They’re still perfect aside from the fact that many, many machine washes later the fit has deteriorated. That they remained snag and ladder-free for so long after purchase convinced me that spending the €20 – €30 a pair that they cost was worth it. I figured spending that much was better than the very occasional €3 in Penneys or €4 in Dunnes. Even M&S’ decent range paled in comparison.

© WeLoveColours

Then the recession hit – oh the drama! – and I found myself facing into a winter of the reasonably thick 80 Denier tights in Penneys that you can wear once, max twice, before you find yourself walking down the street clutching at your waist like a deranged person. To solve this problem I decided to try out the preferred tight retailer of Jessica at WhatIWore (yes, obsessed!). She lists We Love Colours as one of her favourites so I splashed out a total of €27.14 on two pairs of “Nylon/Lyrca Microfibre Tights”, the price includes very quick postage. And they’re great. I bought black and navy tights and I love them. They’re thick, dark and FIT. They are yet to slide down or bunch at my knees. I’m about 5′ 10″ so it’s generally the lenght of the tights that fails me but these pairs are as close to perfect for my height as I’ve worn before. All in all I have decided to one again place my faith in spending more than average on tights; it’s, and I’m, worth it..!

The novel, which takes place in 1963, is about a school girl named Charlotte who awakes to find her identity swapped with a girl named Clare, forty-five years in the past, in the year 1918. An eerily fascinating story, I imagine the following to be characteristic of Charlotte’s 1918 existence:

I love origami detailing on clothing, when it’s done well. I picked up this dress a couple of years ago for that reason. The dress required a good bit of tailoring and since I was pretty slack in getting that done, I wore it for the first time last Saturday night.

The dress is by Moschino and, in addition to the origami details, has the most interesting tulip shape.

Origami detail on sleeve …

More detail on the back of the dress …

The shoes are Oscar de la Renta. Check out the subtle “brush stroke” pattern in the leather …

Before we left, I threw on my Jillian Lewis-esque Gryphon coat smothered in ruffles …

Back view of the coat from another time I wore it …

I also wore Wolford Harmony tights.

Thanks for reading. See you soon. — Carole

Ugh, it’s officially cold in New York City. Even though today isn’t quite as freezing as it was over the weekend, I’m still not at all prepared to be bundled up to my ears every morning on my (40 effing minutes!) walk to work.

The real problem, however, is that I have no idea how to dress myself. At all.

Just as a finally solidified my Fall wardrobe (Bomber jacket, Leggings, Long Blazers) it becomes too damn cold to wear any of it!

So, looking into my closet today all I could see were potential outfits that were rendered impossible by my lack of tights.

I know, so simple…yet I have none!

And what is especially silly is that Zac Posen for Wolford Tights was on Gilt last week for obscenely low prices…and I bought none. None!

I could have had these bad boys under a black sweater dress, rather than the same jeans/black shirt/boots combo I’ve been rocking to work every.single.day.

Instead of spending money on myself (since it’s too close to Christmas for that), I stopped at Rugby on the way home from work and bought Kelly a pair of socks. What? He really needs socks! Is that not romantic enough for you?

Still, not the same as a present for yours truly.

Is this not an absolutely special and adorable one? hm may be a little too see through, too skintight, too HOT for beeing ever worn in public, but a delight to wear for yourself . So perfect matching to the autumn in this pumpkin colour, lol. Those stiletto mules are made by leatherworks, uk.

By the way, I won´t be online tonight as promised first as due to the rainy weather the bikers return earlier home LOL. Damned! What if I had organized a fetish orgy? What if I had a lover, or two planned for tonight? What if I had my house full of slaves to clean my shoeshelves up?!? What if this would have been made up a girls-evening with champagne, SATC, lingerie catwalks or what ever? Even if it is only an at-saturdays-forbidden-webcamchat, you men should learn: don´t come home earlier than you are expected!!! Then we women would really look forwards of you returning and not be dissappointed cuz we wanted to have a day off another way!!

In modern times, the demand of nylon stocking has increased and decreased according to changing appr

In modern times, the demand of nylon stocking has increased and decreased according to changing approach and fashion. The modern manufacture of socks and stockings got a boost with the advent of nylon in 1939 world trade fair. From then on things started changing. Soon nylon stockings became the darling of a major section of the fashion conscious population. Women liked it since nylon is a long lingering material and it takes hardly any time to get dry after being washed.

It was in the year 1940 that nylon stockings made their appearance for the first time in up to date York. On the first day of sale, more than 72,000 pairs of stockings were sold. The craze for nylon stockings soon started spreading like a wild fire. The ignition was so intense that soon nylon stockings became a significant part of international fashion.

As demand augmented, the manufacturers caught hold of the heat and started producing nylon stockings of all colors, thickness and forms. Most women are of the belief that all nylon stockings are seamed. This is nevertheless, a current concept, as in early times all nylon socks were hand made. It was only when manual labor came to be replaced through machines that seamed nylon stockings were produced in enormous amounts.

The variety of types

Nylon stockings come in several types like the ones, which can cover the ankle and those above and below the knee. Some nylon stockings are designed in a way to give you relief from the uneasiness in the varicose veins.

Quite radically, within a few years of time, nylon successfully replaced silk stockings and they were available in both seam and seamless varieties.

Now nylon stocking is not simply a cover for your leg. With growing time, it has become a fashion testimonial. A black nylon stocking nevertheless creates a dramatic impact on an otherwise uninteresting and colorless article of clothing whereas a skin-toned nylon stocking conceals skin blemishes and makes your legs look ideal.

What to believe when purchasing nylon stocking?

Price is a huge factor, which makes you decide whether you should go for branded or non branded nylon stockings. If you desire to spend less so you can go for pantyhose and if the price is not your deciding factor consequently nylon stockings from Leggs and Wolford can certainly be your choice. On the other hand, if you want to go for a midrange price nylon stocking like Hanes, Round the Clock and Jockey for Her is sure to solve your dilemma to some extent. And if designer stocking is what you wish for to go for, the nylon stockings from Donna Karan, Christian Dior, and Calvin Klein will indeed make you look more elegant and gorgeous.

Well, not Martin+Osa specifically, rather one of their tees. On one of my “Gone Shopping

Well, not Martin+Osa specifically, rather one of their tees.

On one of my “Gone Shopping” trips, I (finally) ventured into Martin+Osa for the first time. I had seen one of their tee shirts, this one in particular, that I wanted …

M+O "Leaping Leopard" tee, src: martinandosa.com

The “Leaping Leopard” tee (available here) was the one I really wanted, but khaki colors are all wrong for my coloring. I settled on this one (available here) instead …

M+O "Crouching Leopard" tee, src: martinandosa.com

These are really great tees. They have stitching detail in the leopard design that’s almost like embroidery. When I first saw these tees in person, they reminded me of some of the earlier Project Alabama tees (the machine made ones, not the hand stitched ones), like these …

Project Alabama tees, src: inhabitat.com

The woman who made Project Alabama what it was is no longer affiliated with PA. Natalie “Alabama” Chanin now designs an organic line, Alabama Chanin, and is a Fashion Fund finalist. Very exciting! But I digress …

Though it was my first and (so far) only trip to Martin+Osa, I feel strongly compelled to say that my shopping experience there was first class. Melissa, the M+O Sales Associate who assisted me, made me feel like I was at Neiman Marcus, the service was so outstanding. I’ll be back.

And now, I show you my new M+O tee shirt …

I wore this tee (with my infamous no name cardigan, shown in the next picture) to “The September Issue”, the documentary chronicling the making of the Vogue, September 2007, issue. I also wore a Michael Kors skirt, Wolford tights (Bellevue), and Martin Margiela cut-out boots. (Shame on you folks at MMM, the rough finish at the top of the boot’s zipper tore my tights.)

The stitching detail is hard to see, but it’s there …

As for “The September Issue”, if you love fashion, you MUST see if you have the chance. All the usual “characters” that you’d expect are there … Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, Andre Leon Talley, Oscar de la Renta, Thakoon, and many, many more. If I take anything away from this film though, it would be that Anna Wintour’s “harsh” reputation is SO undeserved. She’s just a professional doing her job and doing it very well, I might add.

That’s all for now. — Carole

Better late than never to put into practice something that inspired me over a year ago. I always save looks from the runway shows that I really like and eventually get around to implementing whatever it was that caught my eye. This post’s inspiration is from the S/S 2009 (yes, I do realize 2010 is showing right now — I’m just not inspired yet) Ossie Clark show during London Fashion Week. When I saw the dark navy blue and orange color combination, I was in love. Specifically, this is what I refer to …

Ossie Clark, src: style.com

My take on the color combination …

Something Bold – orange coat from Andrew Gn

Something Blue – dark navy, origami top from Marni

Something Inspired by — orange and navy color combination seen at Ossie Clark S/S 2009

Something New from J. Crew — gray skirt

I also wear booties from Barbara Bui (closeups are available elsewhere on my blog, so look around if you like) and tights from Wolford (Honeycomb in drizzle).

Look Ma, no hands! Obviously, the timer went off before I got my arms into the sleeves. Anyway, I show you the back of the coat so you can see the cute bow detail.

More coming soon. Thanks for reading. — Carole

Long time, no picture posts. So, I guess I’m back for now.

Last Thursday night, I went to Fashion’s Night Out, after all. I originally thought I wouldn’t go as of the time I wrote my last post. Well, I did and I’m glad (so I know for myself first hand). But, it was … not great. I suspect New York was the best venue for the fashion action. The Bay Area is “world class” in many areas … we have leadership in technology (we headquarter Apple, Oracle, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and many more); biotechnology (Genentech and others); wineries (too many to mention); high-end electric car manufacture (Tesla Motors); film, television, and live theatre shows; agriculture; “food movements” (raw foods trend, hormone-free meats and dairy, first unpasturized goat cheese manufacture in the US, birthplace of the Martini and Irish Coffee, etc.), but fashion isn’t one of these leadership areas for us. A dismal fashion showing isn’t the worst thing that can happen; still, a world class geographic area should have world class fashion, right? Don’t get me wrong though, I am appreciative of what is here for us … as I sit here writing this and realize how many great things the Bay Area offers that I haven’t even mentioned, I am truly awed. I have to say that I’m glad I thought about this; it is easy to take the good things for granted. Just … bring back SF Fashion Week, OK?

Alright, enough of all that and back to the main event. We didn’t stay too long at FNO; it wasn’t that great and I wanted to go to my favorite restaurant on Nob Hill, so we did. We ended up at “my” little bistro on Nob Hill, which is the very first restaurant I went to many years ago on my first trip to San Francisco.

This is what I wore …

I wore a teal wool and cashmere jacket from Richard Tyler, a black, taffeta, hitched skirt from Forever 21, Wolford Honeycomb tights in Nori, and faux eel skin shoes from Pollini. Also, I carried my YSL “Bow Bag” and remembered to get a picture!

Details … This F21 skirt is to die for … it looks like it could be a runway piece shown in any number of Milan shows. Also, check out the 3 different sized buttons and asymmetric detailing on the jacket …

The only sort of “down moment” about going up to Nob Hill was that I didn’t see the San Francisco Twins. I hope they are OK. Back around 2005-2006, I was going into the City an average of 3 times a week and I used to run into the lovely Marian and Vivian Brown, aka The San Francisco Twins, *everywhere*. I always love to chat with them as they are such charming ladies. I guess you can say this is another special SF treat, having The Twins as ambassadors to San Francisco. SF is lucky to have them, but I suspect the always diplomatic Twins would say that they are the lucky ones.

The San Francisco Twins, src: sfgate.com

Certainly, it was fun to go into San Francisco on Thursday night, but likely it will be a while before I go back. You see, it takes about an hour and a half to get there, making it feel like travel. Both Mr. Sasy and I loathe travel. We had to do so much of it earlier in our careers and while the first six trips or so are fun, travel gets very old, very fast.

And, since I haven’t posted pictures in so long, I will post last night’s outfit too …

I wore a silver brocade dress and beaded fair isle sweater from Moschino Cheap and Chic, a Prada “jeweled” headband, Wolford Synergy tights, and Banfi Zambrelli shoes. I originally bought the dress and sweater a couple of years ago to wear to a party in SF. Since I decided to wear a more “urban” looking outfit to that party, I put this outfit away and just now got around to wearing it. I didn’t take a picture of the dress by itself because I felt that it was too bare to show on its own.

Some details … The beading on this sweater is just gorgeous. I hope you can see the large, chunky stones in the black band between the two cream bands. Some beads are gold-toned and some are silver-toned, making me feel like a mixed metal rebel.

And a closeup showing fabric detail on the dress …

That’s all for now. See you soon. — Carole

Body suits are massive at the moment, I for one love them – except for the massive VPL I seem to acquire when I where one – and I am in disbelief that my mum seems to have thrown out all of her bodysuits from the 80s/90s!
Of course these Wolford are known to have beauitful, creative tight and stockings. After it being brought to the U.S by two Vogue editors, it seems to have much popularity and a “must-have” piece.

How ever, these soft cashmere felt like is not at regular price as other stockings in Macys. They’re a bit pricey

I’m currently obsessing over cute, patterned tights. I wear everything from Wolford to the gen

I’m currently obsessing over cute, patterned tights.

I wear everything from Wolford to the generic drug store brand, depending on the mood, style, and appropriateness (I wouldn’t be able to wear a few of these below to work!!). Generally, the more expensive the tights, the better quality they are (duh), but at times I think there should be a good balance between cost and efficiency. I’m the kind of person that would snag my brand new tights within minutes of wearing them… call me clumsy (or careless?) but it REALLY pisses me off and makes me so sad when I ruin my tights!! This is why I would NEVER buy insanely expensive hosiery, such as Chanel. I would cry if I snagged them!!

With that said, here are some of my current faves, starting out with the Chanel (that I would never ever buy… not that I could afford them anyway!):

Chanel 2 tone hosiery with ankle logo ($295)

For those that are interested, they have replicas of these two-toners at Urban Outfitters for pennies!!

Another Chanel beauty:

These are really cute! I would totally rock these…. but for the $495 price tag! Ouch.

Next is this new brand that I only recently discovered from the UK, called Bebaroque. Very cute and modern, but definitely not “work-friendly”!

How awesome are these?! Totally looks like a full SUIT. Loving this. £45.

Another Bebaroque, from their Autumn line:

check out Bebaroque HERE.

Some more “tame” tights….

Wolford tights:

$78, Wolford lucky charm tights. These are definitely on my MUST HAVE list!!

Wolford “Voile” leggings, $62.

ok, these are a little different. I haven’t decided whether I like these or not… but the more I look at them, the more I think I like them. They’re definitely not your typical hosiery. I like it when traditional styles are experimented.

Thursday, July 30, 2009 Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto, California It’s really crowded in

Thursday, July 30, 2009
Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto, California

It’s really crowded in here, I think.
Do I squeeze my way in too?
Uh, how could I forget that Thursday evenings are “Summer Jazz” concert nights?

The scene is J. Crew and it is filled wall-to-wall with women browsing and shopping until the jazz concert begins. Is it always this crowded? You see, I’ve never been to J. Crew before, unless I fell down and smacked my little head on the pavement and can’t recall , so I didn’t really know what to expect. Even though they have many lovely things, I never felt a strong urge to go there until I saw some of their Fall 2009 pictures at various online sites. I like what they are doing with their accessories, in particular, and THAT was what it took to get my attention. I always feel like I’m a little lean on fashion jewelry, so I bravely ventured into the crowded store.

I saw many cute items. I saw this …

src: jcrew.com

available here –> J. Crew Ribbon Top and immediately recalled these prior seasons’ looks that I love …

Comme des Garçons, Fall 2007, src: style.com

Moschino, Spring 2006, src: style.com

I bought the top and tried it on like this …

In the next picture, Mr. Sasy asks, “Are you going to work on a crab boat in that?” Of course, I respond, “Cool, I must have some Prada, Fall 2009, action happening!”

But, as you can see from the following Prada runway pictures, I’m not quite there yet. (Thank goodness)

Prada, Fall 2009, src: style.com

Prada, Fall 2009, src: style.com

In this try on post, I also wear a Michael Kors skirt, a Tom Binns safety pin bracelet, over knee socks from Wolford (Alaska), and Motorcycle boots from Target. I picked up these cute little boots about 3 months ago on clearance. I am v. excited about wearing them this fall. And here’s their closeup …

Anyway, not only did I buy the ribbon top (which I’m not 100% sure about keeping — it is a little boxy and very long), I picked up a pretty necklace with dangling daisies that I wear in the post immediately below this one. So, even if I don’t keep the ribbon top, I did meet my pick up some fashion jewelry goal, after all.

To close, I call this post “Impure” because I am no longer a J. Crew virgin. tbh, I secretly fear that I’ve crossed over to the dark side.

Thanks for reading. More soon. — Carole
