I recently had some free time in my Empirical Methods of Communication class (the professor was talking or something) so I decided to text a bunch of people to see who, in their opinion, the most badass people or characters were. I asked this with the intention of looking for icons to pattern my own behavior after – weight loss books and websites are a dime a dozen, but how many Being a Badass handbooks are there? Not many, and I’ll wager that those that do exist are in some way affiliated with Spike TV (which kind of precludes them from consideration). Hence this post, where we try and break it down.

Here are the responses I got (in no particular order): Clint Eastwood, Indiana Jones’ dad, Vincent (Collateral), James Bond, Samuel L. Jackson, Liam Neeson, Batman, Wolverine, Denzel Washington, Raze (from Underworld), Morpheus, Matt Puppo (I’ll let you guess who suggested that), and Richard (from the Sword of Truth series). Rather than get bogged down in a list of which of these people is more badass (which would take hours, not have a resolution and be an exercise in endless counter points like the fact Wolverine is only kind of badass because his powers enable him to act as recklessly as Batman with no consequences, or that Liam Neeson was decidedly not badass in Love Actually, and that’s not the point of this post). In no particular order I will observe commonalities which I will then try to apply to my own life.

Restroom usage. I cannot recall ever seeing, reading, or hearing about a time when any of these people used the bathroom. The only time I recall them even being in the vicinity of a toilet, it was to cap some Soviets (Bond in GoldenEye) or start a fight (Morpheus). So I guess I need to stop going potty and only go in there if I need to beat the shit out of someone (pun intended).

Be black. When I talked to people, there were not only several African-American actors named, but their being black was listed as part of the reason (and might actually be like 50 percent of the reason Raze made this list). Deep booming voices, I guess, are extremely badass and the black actors listed here have perfected their “don’t mess with me” looks far more than any other actors I can think of. Obviously not everyone on this list fulfills this, so it’s hardly a requirement, but it seems like it can only help your case. On the other hand, white people trying to act black is painful for everyone (Vanilla Ice), so I guess this isn’t that helpful an observation.

SAY WHAT AGAIN. I dare you, I double dare you, motherfucker, say 'what?' one more god damn time!

Be popular with the ladies, the more the better. I feel like James Bond has this on lockdown. Richard has something like four wives over the course of Sword of Truth. Bruce Wayne/Batman is constantly fending off the attentions of like, every female villain he encounters (including some heiresses) and while some people seem to think this is because of ahem, his relationship with Robin, I’m pretty sure he just doesn’t want to get got, as it were, when he least expects it. Plus, given what her kisses do, would you want to get anywhere close to Poison Ivy’s junk? Indiana Jones’ dad totally had his mojo working on that hot Nazi (kind of a give/take statement, but still). The point is, badass people can generally be described as “big pimpin’.”

Be prepared to sacrifice your body to accomplish your goal (which is probably pulverizing someone/everyone). Batman knows what I’m talking about. Same with Vincent, Denzel Washington, etc. You are way more badass if you do not care what happens to you. It also helps if your body can withstand vast amounts of physical punishment (but it needs to be without the foreknowledge that you will almost certainly be okay, Wolverine). This category is probably the least fun and hardest to act out in real life unless you’re a complete asshole, which sort of goes against being a badass. It also helps if you can offer up a witty line during or after, like Batman or James T. Kirk (who, in retrospect, is an excellent addition to the list). So if you don’t go around beating people up or preventing explosions (more on this soon), try grimacing and offering up a pithy comment the next time you do something stupid and end up injuring yourself. Ideally you’ll come across as badass.

Be near exploding things. Something I think all these people have in common is their constant proximity to things that blow the fuck up. This seems to work out okay for them, why wouldn’t it work out for me? They dodge the worst of the consequences most of the time (usually by jumping face first into the ground while whatever it is splodes), why can’t I? Maybe I will move to a third world country riddled with land mines and just dive everywhere. Seriously. How many explosions do you think the average person is around in a lifetime? What is that statistic compared to what these guys face? Ridiculous. Speaking of guys…

Be a guy. I didn’t realize til just now that there aren’t any ladies on this list. I don’t think that means there aren’t any female badasses, I just think that when people answer who they think is most badass, none of the top candidates are women. I don’t have a lot of experience with Tomb Raider, could Lara Croft make the list? I can’t think of anyone else I would put in the top tier of badass. Hence, try to be like a guy, I guess? I’m sure I’ve offended some feminist by accident here.

Okay I think that’s a lot to work on in the next week. I’m more than open to additional observations on commonalities among badasses (having a team of writers for your life seems like it would help a lot, now that I think about it).

On Thanksgiving, most people find themselves with family, sitting around a table piled high with homemade holiday treats. There’s fresh, seasoned turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes, green beans, apple pie and so much more. It’s that time of year again and while I’m looking forward to some family time and a feast a la supermarket, I can’t help but to dream of what my ideal holiday dinner might be like. I’m most thankful for my family, but I’m also grateful that I’m able to make movies such a large part of my life, hence the fresh-out-of-the-oven Film Thanksgiving Dinner is born.

Well, I found a place here in town that actually sells the type of memory stick the PSP requires. However it’s around 50$ and I only have around 37$ for another couple days.

My visual novel project is advancing very slowly. Far too slowly I doubt I’ll finish for the 30th like was planned in the “competition.” But then I was only halfway aiming for that. If I miss the deadline oh well it gives me all the time I need to relax and toy with the script.

I should really get back to reading Human All too Human.  More recently I’ve been hung up reading comics I’ve recently “acquired” starting with the entirety of Wolverine. A series I tried to follow a while back but I was a kid who rarely ever had money. Not to mention the area I lived in didn’t always get it, and sometimes when they did they only got two issues that sold out before I got there. -.-;

Pretty well the same thing that’s happening here and now. I was buying Yen+ regularly then the store stopped carrying it. They started stocking Shounen Jump and Shoujo Beat. So I was buying Shoujo Beat regularly and now they only stock Shounen Jump… well that and some anime magazine that I won’t bother buying because it likely only has info on “brand new” series I started watching last year. And whilst they do stock a few Marvel titles, not Wolverine or Deadpool.

Though I could probably just order Yen+ by mail. Which would solve my problem.  I probably wouldn’t get Shoujo Beat if only because their alternating light red and light blue ink irritates me.

The Story: The X-Men attempt to stave off the Predator X attack.

What’s Good: This is an action comic, pure and simple and in that capacity, it delivers; it’s big, bloody, and explosive.

Better still, Matt Fraction makes the most of the fact that it’s a team based action comic.  One really gets a sense of strategy in the X-Men’s dealing with the Predator Xs.  Abilities are used in perfect concert and the X-Men feel like a well-trained, well-oiled machine.  Multi-level, cooperative strategy is employed as the mutants essentially combine and chain each other’s abilities in a sort of cooperative harmony that was clearly quite well thought out by Fraction.

Taking this perhaps a little more literally is Fraction’s use of Rogue.  He uses her power absorption ability to synchronize X-Men mutant abilities, allowing him to essentially play a cool and creative game of mix and match with mutant powers.

While action-based, the issue is nonetheless not without development.  A very interesting Phoenix-related occurrence happens with respect to the Cuckoos that is foreboding and is sure to pay dividends at a later date.  Furthermore, the last page of the book is similarly intriguing, as we get a look at Danger’s idea of a prison.  Those who have read William Gibson’s foundational cyberpunk novel ”Neuromancer” will probably get a kick out of the scene.

On art, Greg Land actually acquits himself quite well, particularly for his often-weak standards.  While certain female faces do lack detail or appear a little awkwardly photo-referenced, there aren’t any real catastrophes this month.  Compliments are due, however, for Land’s drawings of the Predator X monstrosities, which look horrifyingly savage and distinctly alien.  That last page with Danger was also quite beautiful.

What’s Not So Good: While the use of teamwork in harmonizing abilities and employing strategy was impressive, that doesn’t change the fact that this is just one big, extended action scene across 21 pages.  In other words, it’s hard not read this without realizing that while you’re entertained, the book nonetheless feels strangely hollow, shallow even.  Indeed, this is mainstream comics at its most popcorn superficial, the sort of book that the indie comic fan no doubt points to in horror.  That doesn’t mean it’s bad, but it also means that the book doesn’t summon any sort of emotion beyond the base-level amusement that comes with reading a good action scene.  It’s not a smart read in the slightest, nor is it a dense one, though it is enjoyable for what it is.

Also, some of Fraction’s voices are still off.   He struggles with Rogue’s colloquial accent, for starters.  At times it disappears altogether or is at least very minimal, while at other times, she sounds like a painfully exaggerated hillbilly.  Fraction can’t seem to find a middle ground, nor can he find consistency.

Magneto’s voice also feels problematic this month and reminds me of Fraction’s struggles to write Xavier’s voice in past issues.  At times, Magneto just sounds too young, hip, and catchy, particularly with his battle banter.  Worse still, in a later scene, he goes back to the more aged, formal tone we saw last month.  Like Rogue, not only is the voice problematic in itself, but it also lacks consistency.

Conclusion: Enjoyable for what it is, this issue still feels a little thin due to its not striving to be anything more.

Ryan Reynolds. Esta aí um dos bons atores de sua geração. E com um bom momento que já perdura  uns 5 anos. Reynolds já protagonizou e participou de muitos filmes nesse momento. Papéis totalmente versáteis que foram desde um amigo gordinho até como caçador de vampiros.

O ator deu uma entrevista para MTV, falando um pouco sobre o bom momento que vive na carreira, além de falar sobre dois projetos esperados: Lanterna Verde e o filme solo de Deadpool.

Sobre Lanterna Verde, falou sobre como foi experimentar alguns protótipos de trajes: “Eu acho que, vendo os protótipos das fantasias para o Lanterna Verde foi um momento enorme. Foi um momento que era como, “Isso está acontecendo, e está acontecendo de maneira certa.” Esse é um momento muito legal e definitivo pra mim.

Completa falando sobre o carinho pelo personagem: “Eu soube sobre o “Green Lantern” toda a minha vida, mas eu nunca realmente tinha acompanhado antes. Eu caí no amor com o personagem quando me encontrei com o [diretor] Martin Campbell. Quando eu sentei com ele, eu realmente tenho o que é que esse cara tem tudo a ver.” Continua: “Ele é menos do diretor e mais de um general. Ele só sabe realmente estratégias, ele conhece os meandros, e sua atenção ao detalhe! É contagiante. Sentei-me com ele, e eu não conseguia nem acreditar no que estava dizendo. Quando fui para a reunião, eu estava completamente cínico. Eu pensei: “Que diabos, eu vou ver o que eles têm a dizer”, e saí da sala com uma perspectiva completamente diferente.”

Para encerrar, Reynolds também falou sobre Deadpoll. Disse que ficou um pouco frustrado da forma que foi apresentado em Wolverine – Origens. Diz que nem sempre é possível manter-se fiel ao personagem. Ele queria interpretar bem tanto Wade quanto Deadpoll. E sobre suas expectativas da franquia solo do mesmo, disse que o projeto está andando, que é difícil escrever sobre o personagem ainda mais pensando numa franquia.

O longa do mercenário Deadpoll ainda não possuí um cronograma oficial ou mesmo uma da de estreia definida. Já Lanterna Verde, está programado para chegar aos cinemas em 2011.

Aventura futurista deve estrear em 2011; filmagens começam em junho.
Astro vai interpretar boxeador que teme ser substituído por robôs.

Hugh Jackman foi escalado para protagonizar a aventura futurista “Real Steel”, que terá Steven Spielberg como produtor executivo. De acordo com a revista “Variety”, o filme deve chegar aos cinemas em 2011.

Baseado em um conto de Richard Matheson, “Real steel” gira em torno de um boxeador (Jackman) que tem que se reinventar quando lutadores humanos começam a ser substituídos por robôs que sempre ganham. Ele também descobre que tem um filho de 11 anos, com quem começa a se relacionar.

As filmagens devem começar em junho de 2010. Ainda não há confirmação se Spielberg também vai trabalhar como diretor no projeto. Robert Zemeckis (de “Forrest Gump”) também vai participar como produtor no longa-metragem.

Right, so LT has raised the stakes somewhat with her choice of Gavin… not bad, LT, not bad. So it’s time to haul out the big guns and speaking of big guns, my choice this week is Hugh Jackman. He is Wolverine. And for some reason, we all think Wolverine is not only the most awesome of the X-Men, but also the hottest of all the super-hero characters out there.

People Magazine voted him the sexiest man alive in 2008 and I’m not going to argue with People… they’re always accurate. His only drawback is that he is Australian but then no-one’s perfect…

Hugh Jackman (Wolverine, Australia) has officially joined “Real Steel”, the new film by director Shawn Levy. Jackman will play an ex-fighter who becomes a promoter when human boxing is outlawed for being too violent. The new gladiators are 2,000-pound robots with human qualities. The ex-fighter’s access to sub-standard robot parts hampers his hopes for glory in Robot Boxing, until he discovers a discarded robot that always seems to win. The ex-fighter has also discovered he’s the father of a 13-year old son, and they bond as the robot brawls its way toward the top.

The Story: Dr. Rot attempts to release the animal inside Logan.

What’s Good: Last month’s issue was fantastic and this month is basically just more of a good thing.  Aaron’s “Insane in the Brain” arc continues to be a fantastic horror comic; it’s twisted, creepy, and shockingly gory for a mainstream Marvel comic.

Dr. Rot continues to be an incredibly strong character.  This month, his gleeful insanity is all the more enjoyable, as he has a run-in with some ordinary Mafia thugs.  What ensues is a delightful collision of worlds, where contact with the more mundane criminal only makes Rot appear all the more outrageous.  Also, if that female mask Rot wore last month wasn’t bad enough, this time Rot actually has it adopt its own personality, as he talks to himself in a mirror.  I couldn’t figure out whether I wanted to laugh or take a shower after reading that.

I suppose that that’s really indicative of how this issue’s build upon last month’s groundwork: it just seems that little bit more outrageous.  Where last month saw a bloody sack of brains, this one sees Rot running around with cleavers, a man with his hands removed, and an all-out chainsaw massacre.  Where last month had more of a “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” feel, this month continues that, but adds a strong dash of grindhouse, splatter-horror into the mix.  Indeed, when we enter Rot’s mad scientist lab and he goes plucking brains, it certainly feels like something out of a thirty year old horror flick.  It’s sensationalist, bloody, and delightfully campy.

On art, Yanick Paquette continues to put out incredibly pleasing work.  His character models remain fantastic.  I also enjoyed how most of the frames featuring Rot have his eyes shaded in.  The character’s only having shadowy black pits for eyes is definitely disquieting.  Paquette also extends his range a bit this month, drawing Wolverine’s nightmares in a completely different style, one that’s more blurred, painted, and hellish.  It’s a perfect juxtaposition to the rest of the comic and is suitably horrifying.  Colorist Nathan Fairbairn also continues to have a great effect on Paquette’s work, giving Wolverine’s “treatment” scenes in particular a very well-lit, even fluorescent, clinical feel.

All told, the book hits all the same right notes it hit last month.  While it shows more this month, using the suspense of the page-turn to the maximum, it still also plays up what we can’t see.  Certain areas remain cordoned off, and as demonstrated by the bandaged nurse this month, that’s often the worst part.

What’s Not So Good: Admittedly, much of the ground covered plot-wise is the same stuff we went over last month.  For instance, Wolverine repeats that he doesn’t know where he is or what his name is.  He stated those same lines through monologue a bit last month, but when he does so a few more times this month, it does become noticeable.   At one point, Wolverine’s continued restating of this existential dilemma made me wonder whether some of the internal monologue was even necessary, if it’s only there to echo what we’ve heard several times already.

The big ending this month does help, but there is a slight sense of water treading through some parts of this issue.  That said, I don’t suspect it will greatly bother anyone with a decent attention span.

Conclusion: Still incredibly experimental and creative, with a cool grindhouse flavor added in, this one’s a keeper.
