Hora de começar a organizar a vida de formada. Desde que eu me entendo por gente lembro que sempre quis ir para o exterior. Se não fosse meu pai segurar as rédeas eu já tinha inventado mil viagens.
Quando comecei a faculdade a vontade acabou esquecida pelas novidades. Colegas, profissão, técnicas,… o jornalismo começou a sugar a minha energia de uma forma que não tinha mais espaço para qualquer outro pensamento.
Agora estou praticamente formada e sinto que o momento de ir embora chegou. Saí de casa com 16 anos para morar em Porto Alegre, já trabalhei pra caramba dentro da minha área (levando em consideração que nem tenho diploma ainda), tive boas experiências. Tudo isso fez com que eu pudesse amadurecer e hoje afirmar cheia de convicção: chegou a hora.
Já fico com o coração apertado só de pensar nas pessoas que vou deixar aqui. Não sei como ficar por tempo indeterminado sem ver meus pais, meus pequeninos irmãos, a Preta, meus avós, a Laura, a Camila, amigos, nossa… a lista é grande. A saudade vai ser um dos sentimentos mais forte durante o período que vou morar fora.
Como acordar sem ver no chão da cozinha as gotas de café derramadas pela Camila? Como não precisar me arrumar pé por pé para não acordar a Laura? Como não ter a Famecos para ir todos os dias? Como não ter a Lancheria do Parque na busca por um encontro inusitado? Como não ter a Redenção para me jogar na grama num domingo preguiçoso de sol? Como não ter Venâncio para me refugiar nos fins de semana? Como não ter a casa da Édina para ficar horas e horas jogando conversa fora? Como não ter o Muca e a Grê para jantar nos domingos de noite? Como não ver o Arthurzinho para iluminar a minha vida? Como não caminhar pelas ruas irregulares da Rua da Praia respirando Porto Alegre?
E ele… Sempre ele… Como não estar aqui para continuar a nossa eterna história sem fim?
Tenho duas certezas. A primeira é que vou ter que me preparar muito bem nos dois meses que faltam para o embarque. Mentalizar o novo e me desligar das minhas raízes.
A segunda certeza é de que a nossa história está bem longe de ter um fim. O que vejo agora é uma continuação num cenário diferente. É bebê… Deve ser coisa do destino mesmo. Because maybe you’re gonna be the one that saves me. And after all, you’re my wonderwall. (Oasis)

Ok, I know, I know.  This feels like a huge ripoff.  I’m totally cheating right now.  I’m reviewing an obscure E.P. with only three songs on it.  Honestly, it completely feels like I’m cheating.  But, I’ve got work to do for school, it’s two days before Thanksgiving, and, well, it’s going to get reviewed sooner or later.  It is in my record collection, and I have listened to it.  So, it is going to get reviewed no matter what.

Anyway, a little history.  “Wonderwall” by Oasis came out in 1995, and could easily be their most popular song.  This version also came out in 1995, and is definitely Mike Flowers Pops most popular song (despite an inclusion of “Call Me” into the soundtrack for Austin Powers).  When this second version came out, it was mistaken (and purposely rumored by BBC1) as the original song, a humorous anecdote that is completely false.  And, fourteen years later, after hearing about this lounge version for a while (as I’ve been a huge Oasis fan – although I’m not nearly obsessed with them as I used to be – I have heard and read about numerous versions of Oasis’ songs and other details about the band that no one would ever care about), I came across a used cd of the E.P. in a local Coconuts.  The price was a quarter.  Honestly.  Actually, probably ten percent less because I have a Backstage Pass card.  But still, I think you catch my point – which is, if you come across such a strange, obscure recording of a popular song for twenty-five cents, you buy it.

So, the E.P. starts with, of course, the infamous version of “Wonderwall.”  The opening is a cool, recreated vinyl crackle which gives way to the music of The Super Stereo Brass – Mike Flowers backup band.  It’s an uptempo swing, with Flowers playing guitar, and then singing.  And, you can’t help but laugh.  Not at the song, because it’s a really good version of the song.  But it makes you smile.  It really does.  The Sound Superb Singers (Flowers’ backup vocal group) provide very ’60’s sounding backup singing.  It’s essentially a lounge version, kind of like the more popular Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine.  But Flowers gets props for doing this first.  So, the melody hasn’t changed too much, but Flowers does alter the “And after all, you’re my wonderwall” line, making it choppier and happier.  And it’s followed by a really cheesy brass line, which makes the song so awesome.  The cd was totally worth the quarter just for this song.

The next song features one of the Sound Superb Singers, Juliet Morel.  “Son of God” is a duet with her and Flowers, again.  It starts with a slow, keyboard line.  One that makes me wish I could play keyboard that well.  Not that it sounds particularly hard, it’s just a nice, pretty line.  When the singing starts (Morel is the first to sing), a harpsichord is heard as well.  And I love harpsichord.  Morel’s voice is genuinely a beautiful voice, great quality.  But, ugh, I hate the style.  This song sounds more serious than “Wonderwall” was.  Flowers has a very good tonal quality to his voice, as well.  “Son of God” is a very cheesy song, and not in a good way.  They take it too serious.  Coming after “Wonderwall” it sounds very contrived.  It’s a nice song, decent music, the singers are very good, just, it’s boring.  Yeah.

“Theme From Memory Man” is an all-instrumental song, bringing back the comical aspect of Mike Flowers Pops.  I mean, drum machines, horribly cheesy keyboards, and just getting an orchestra to provide background and harmony to that really annoying melody?  It’s brilliant.  I’d say the song would be boring because it’s so repetitive with no noticeable changes, but that’d be a lie.  Truth is, if you’re already listening to the song, you’re going to be entertained until the end. 

Mike Flowers Pops (or The Mike Flowers Pops Orchestra, whatever you’d rather call them) are so overtly cheesy, you have to like them.  They, or Flowers, knows that they, or he, is so already so corny, that the music works.  Except for maybe “Son of God.”  But even that has some decent aspects to the song.  And even so, “Wonderwall” is so fun to listen to, the E.P. is worth it.  Also, and though it’s random, look at the Amazon page for this album (under the “Buy This Album” link below).  I think it’s awesome that under “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought” is Radiohead’s In Rainbows.  Not that that pertains to anything, it just gives you more of an idea how seriously this band has been taken.  Which is what this E.P. is all about.  Not being taken seriously.

[Ed. Note:  I Still managed about 800 words for this album, which, I don't really think you can consider "cheating."  I'd be the worst "cheater" is I did anything like that in high school.  "No, teacher, I didn't do the vocabulary assignment.  But I did look up all the words in the dictionary, and wrote down not only their definitions, but also used them in sentences.  I just didn't feel like spelling them five times each."  Yeah, I think 800 words for three songs is pretty damn good.]

Michael Nath was at Route HQ recently discussing the final draft of his novel La Rochelle. We took the opportunity to record Michael reading his delightful short story ‘Significant to Bradley’, the piece of writing that first alerted us to his talents and which we subsequently published in the book Wonderwall. Below is the recording, above is a photograph taken seconds after the recording.

Michael’s novel La Rochelle will be officially released in Spring 2010, but there will be advance copies available from our website from December. There is also a preview event in Central London on 14 December 2009.

WONDERWALL BY OASIS

When I was hitching around, I often ended up in strange towns needing to busk to earn myself enough to get some food and try to build up an emergency train fare fund. I’d head for the centre and start playing. When I was gigging with bands in those days I was keen to perform mostly original material but when you’re busking you do have to throw in a lot of songs that passers by might know. So I’d give them Beatles and Stones or Motown stuff, easy on the ear and hard to hate. The biggest single donation I ever received when I was busking was a twenty pound note. I was astonished but the person who’d put it in my guitar case did so casually and did not stop for thanks. Of course I’d regularly get foreign coins or buttons from jokers who had nothing better to do that day than try and wind up the musician. And sometimes there would be people clearly hanging around wondering whether I might get distracted by anything and offer them a chance to steal my earnings. No-one ever managed it but I saw the glint of theft in many a person’s eye out on the streets. Partly for that reason I would take out the bigger denomination coins every so often. This can also play a psychological role in how much people decide to donate: if they see you have only small coins they might take pity and put in something larger than they were intending to at first. But don’t get the impression that I was obsessed with how much people paid me for singing and playing to them. As far as I was concerned once I was caught up in the music I was as much playing for myself my own enjoyment as I was to earn cash. The way I see it, buskers should never demand money: we’re making music happen on the corner of a street, or down a subway, or wherever, but everyone is free to walk by, enjoy it or not, stick a few pennies in or not.

There was one occasion when I was convinced that four young lads with skateboards were going to try and pinch my hat and all the money inside. For several songs I tried to keep half an eye on them as well as making sure my hands were playing the right chords and saying “Thank you” if someone donated at a suitable moment in the song for me to take a breath. Eventually the lads came closer and I stared at tousle-haired kid at the front who looked like the ringleader. He was no more than twelve. “Hey,” he said. “Yes?” I asked, thinking this might be a diversionary tactic and trying to keep his mates in view too. “You’re really cool.” He beamed at me and the mates all nodded their agreement. For a split second my cynicism was still engaged and I still thought this might be a diversion. But as I looked into their faces I could see they actually meant it. “I want to learn the guitar,” said the one who’d spoken, “And I’ll do what you’re doing one day.” So I told them how privileged I felt, at times, being allowed to do this. I pointed out all the people walking by, in their suits and work clothes, off to grab a bite of lunch somewhere or rushing to the bank before they have to get back to the office. And here was I, bellowing and strumming in amongst them: the lucky bugger who can make his money from performing. They all nodded again, wide-eyed. And they asked for my autograph. Now I’ve been asked for autographs a fair few times in my musical career but I also find it a little odd. You want me to grab a ballpoint pen and scribble my name down on some slip of paper for you? Well, if it means something to them then who am I to deny them this most curious of pleasures? So I asked the first lad his name, and underneath it I wrote ‘Skate or Die’. The boys were even more in awe. “See,” said one to another, “He knows.” I didn’t have the heart to tell them I had no clue what it meant: I’d seen it on a friend’s T-shirt once.

I entered a Street Performer’s competition once, and had various time slots over two weeks to try and impress the secret judges. I did not expect to win as my competitors were serious entertainers who did fire-swallowing acts, or magic shows, or puppetry and whatever. But I took along my best friend Rob as well as a low, flat, wooden stool and a red velvety cloth. Covering the stool with the cloth made a tiny stage for me to perform on and Rob stood nearby juggling. Another mate came a couple of times too and did the ‘hatting’ (holding out a hat or other receptacle for people to put money into if they so wish). After a couple of okay but fairly tame sessions I started to try and spice things up. “Roll up, roll up, ladies and gentlemen. I shall now perform ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis whilst lying on the floor as my assistant here juggles three, count them, three juggling balls above my head.” Or I would jump off my little stage mid-song and follow someone as they walked past, singing straight at them, occasionally going down on my knees in front of them. And, my personal favourite was another ‘Roll up, roll up’ trick. “Ladies, gentlemen, small children, stray dogs. I shall now attempt to leap over this stage and play an A minor chord at the same time. Stand back please, it’s a very dangerous stunt to try and we wouldn’t want anybody squashed by music.” Rob would make a drum roll sort of noise and I would jump over the stage and strum the appropriate chord. As I said, I never expected to win the competition and sure enough I didn’t. But I had a great time and learnt a few new tricks to incorporate into my more regular busking.The strangest place I have ever busked is Heathrow Airport, but more of that tomorrow.

Erfreuliche Nachrichten für alle Wonderwall Fans und die, die es vielleicht mal werden wollen, die drei Mädchen der Band Wonderwall melden sich pünktlich zum Weihnachtsmusik Geschäft mit einer neuen Weihnachtssingle zurück.

2003 trennte sich Julia Jule Beck von der Mädchen-Band, 2005 lösten Kathrin Kati Schauer und Daniela Ela Förstel die Band dann komplett auf, doch jetzt kommen die Wonderwall 2.0! Neue Besetzung, alte Musik – ob das wirklich gut gehen wird?

Auf der Webseite der Mädchen ist eine offizielle Bestätigung der neuen Band, Gründungsmitglied eLa (Daniela Förstel) versucht nun mit Jana und Jessy (wonderwall.de) an alte Charterfolge anzuknüpfen, beginnend mit der Single This Is Christmas/Stay, die in 7 Tagen – am 20. November 2009 erscheint.

Doch die Chancen auf einen erneuten Erfolg stehen schlecht. Der Song “This Is Christmas” ist eine 1-zu-1 Kopie von der sehr erfolgreichen “Just More” Single der Mädchen (2002), es wurde lediglich ein neuer Text eingesungen, zudem ist der andere Singletrack “Stay” sehr schwach, nach den ersten zehn Sekunden möchte man am liebsten weiterklicken. Mit dieser Single werden sich die drei im Herbst/Winder Geschäft nicht durchsetzen, Fans können von Glück reden, wenn sie die Single überhaupt im Laden finden, die Mädchen sind nämlich bei einem so kleinen Label untergekommen, das man die Single nichtmal bei Amazon.de vorbestellen kann.

Aber das Album ist in Planung! Wenn es so weit kommen sollte, das ihr Label das Album auch veröffentlicht, werden wir weitersehen können, ob sich die Arbeit auch gelohnt hat!

Liam Gallagher

If there’s one thing Jay-Z and Liam Gallagher already have in common its animosity towards Noel Gallagher, brother of Liam. Contention emerged in April 2008 when Noel said it would be “wrong” to book Jay-Z as a headliner for Glastonbury.

The result was Jay-Z covering the Oasis hit Wonderwall to open the show before quite simply blowing away the audience with a string of underground and already commercially successful tracks.

Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis hailed the show as a great success and little has been heard about the matter since.

On August 29th however Noel,42, released a statement on the Oasis website saying the was quitting the band and couldn’t work with Liam,36, a day longer.

Rumors have since emerged that Snoop Dogg plans to work with Noel Gallagher, and Jay-Z weigned in this week saying he wants to work with Liam.

Jay said:”When I teamed up with Linkin Park nobody expected it to work, but we made a success of it, the same could happen with Liam.”

Mr Carter added:”When you have two artists like us in a room just throwing about ideas you come up with something brilliant fairly easily.”

I can’t remember if the drive back from the Sarasota Medieval Festival was the first time I had heard Oasis. But I do remember sitting in the back seat of Mrs. Idelson’s car, staring down at my wax hand mold, hardened into the shape of a peace sign and crumbling at the base. And “Wonderwall” was playing. 

I can’t remember if “1979″ by The Smashing Pumpkins reminded me of my babysitter because she was born in 1979, or if she reminded me of the song because I had just listened to it on a cassette tape in her car. But I do remember staring up at the telephone lines as we rolled down the street towards my neighborhood, filing through all her other tapes in a large bin. “Kids in America” was written in green pen on one.

I can’t remember sneaking into Romeo + Juliet, or if we chickened out at the last minute. But I do remember buying The Cardigans’ First Band on the Moon album the day after I saw it, and bringing it into art class, we were making paper mache that week, and one boy named Jerry asked to sit next to me. “The only guy for me is Leonardo Dicaprio,” I responded.  

I can’t remember why we called each other names on the basketball court at P.E. or stopped being friends, but I do remember singing “Killing Me Softly” by The Fugees in drama class before everything fell to pieces, while we sat in the entrance to the theater, on that cold floor, in Airwalks, plaid skirts and baby tees, in the land before time, as pre-teens, when we had grown up on backyard birthday parties, swimming pools, and jelly shoes, just before we all grew up, and I left.

A friend of ours played us a bunch of stuff recently and this was one of them, it’s those kids the gUiLLeMoTs (if you want to spell it correctly) covering Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out”. There’s a wonderful, husky, blues intro before the track frenetically kicks in and manically spirals towards it’s close.

But it was really the intro that grabbed me, and it reminded me of another track too, a live version of Wonderwall that Ryan Adams did, yep you guessed it, a husky, blues version. Here are the tracks for you folks to have a listen, if anyone knows of any other cover versions like this then drop us a line!

De nuevo aqui en mi blog, como pueden ver hay algunas cositas nuevas que agregué en estos dias como para que se viera mas bonito, pronto cambiaré de layout es uno que estoy diseñando, entonces esten pendientes!!

Les cuento que esta semana a sido muy buena realmente a pesar de algunos altibajos emocionales que he tenido, como el aniversario de la muerte de mi tio Diego el pasado miercoles 28, entonces por ese lado fue duro recordar…  pero bueno las cosas mejoraron mucho esta semana, al ver que las cosas con el colectivo docente que estamos realizando – lo del sensor de nivel y de temperatura… – han salido muy bien y ya todo esta cogiendo como forma entonces a mis compañeros y a mi, nos tiene muy contenta los resultados. Ese dia tambien me entregaron notas de Electronica y uff, me alegre muchisimo porque me sorprendieron las notas que saque!! eran muy altas!!! y no porque no hubiera estudiado ni nada, al contrario estudie muchisimo para los parciales e hice todos los trabajos si no que como que del desconsuelo que tenia, no pensaba que me fuera sacar una nota alta por mas que estudiara!! entonces, claro, eso me subio artisimo la moral y me puso muy contenta.

Esta semana igual estuve muy pendiente de la radio, estuve escuchando el cartel de la mega, donde estuvieron hablando de Sicofonias, de regresiones de Ovnis y todo el cuento, entonces realmente fue muy interesante el tema aunque yo sola aqui en mi casa y escuchando ese tipo de cosas tenia muchisimo susto xDD ,  pero nada chevere, porque en estos dias lei sobre el tema y todo fue muy muy bacano… pienso que debieron haber hablado tambien de licantropia, o inclusive sobre los hombres lobo como tal, ese tema siempre me ha gustado mucho y ahora que estamos en Halloween pues hubiese sido interesante que tambien hubieran tratado el tema

En este momento escucho una muy buena cancion de Oasis, que para nadie es duda que es un gran clasico y es Wonderwall, y en este momento queria compartirlo con ustedes… realmente me acuerda mucho esta cancion de mi amigo @asduque xDD porque a el tambien le gusta mucho!

Y sí… cambiando de tema un poco, supongo que es porque las cosas deben suceder, porque asi esta escrito – si es que existe algo escrito – o porque simplemente no es el momento, pero porque razon – aqui pensando un poquitico… – cuando uno quiere algo… no llega? será porque no le pusimos el empeño que debiamos? será porque nuestras ganas no fueron suficientes? nos falto entusiasmo? nos falto berraquera? no sé… por ejemplo un viaje…  muchas veces añoramos tanto viajar a un lugar especifico, – en mi caso Inglaterra -  y a veces pienso que no se va a dar.. que si ya no se dio, entonces nunca!! pero no… no deberia ser asi, deberiamos pensar como de una manera positiva porque tal vez no es el momento, tal vez ese no es el lugar al que debemos ir o algo similar… simplemente debemos esperar….

En este momento tengo un poco de desilucion por algo que me contaron esta mañana – Que de hecho es realmente estupido! xDD – me rio de eso en este momento porque realmente es una tonteria pero pues lo unico que me resta pensar ahora, es que simplemente no era el momento, simplemente no me convenia … simplemente no… xDD

Bueno creo que eso era todo, les deseo a todos un Feliz Halloween, espero que la pasen delicioso que coman muchos dulces, que vayan a muchas fiestas y que pasen muyy pero muy rico, hasta pronto… se les quiere!!

In addition to such humanitarian feats as finding kidnap victims with my internal echo-locator, foiling conspiracy plots and rescuing women and children from fiery buildings, my role as Wonder Woman would include the innate ability to write code for groundbreaking websites like the one belonging to Japanese interior design firm, Wonderwall. Moving your cursor over the company’s colorful wall of fame not only reveals its impressive clientele (Dean and Deluca, APC and Marc Jacobs, among many others), it also awakens a beautiful and amazing, beeping, hiccuping, living, breathing entity that mesmerizes me to no end. But alas, a mere mortal am I, possessing a limited number of mediocre talents (none of which lend themselves to writing even one inch of code, much less echo-locating) and lots and lots of faults: a Blunder Woman. —LML
