Today was the Seguin Area Artist Studio Tour. Unfortunately, I didn’t visit two of the sites: Artist Roger Betschler (pottery and sculpture), Dave Morrison & Kevin McCormack (stained glass).

Thoroughly enjoyed visiting five other artists’ beautiful homes and viewing their art:

Marika Bordes (wood sculpture); Carrie Davenport (oil painting); Julia Doolittle (watercolor); Karen Roberson (mosaic); and Myra Knapp (oil painting).

We are so fortunate to have these marvelous artists in our own back yard to speak.

NOW to (hopefully someday) have an Arts Center. I envision galleries, theatre, cafes, a special bookstore with a coffee shop . . . ah – dreams that just may one day become a reality.

About “Bois d’Arc”

This amazing wood is hard, durable, elastic and resistant to termites and other insects. French explorers described the tree, Maclura pomifera, as “bois d’arc” (bow wood) and the settlers called it “bodark.” Other common names are: Osage orange and horse apple.

Over the centuries, humans have found many uses for this tree:

The Osage Indians made powerful bows.

The settlers used the wood for fence posts, dye, and house foundations. In fact, there was a time in Texas, one could not get a loan on a house if the foundation was not made of “bois d’arc”.

Osage-orange made life on the prairies possible because Its dense growth provided living fences and windbreaks.

The wood for Maternitree comes from the ranch land of Dr. John Schwartz of Seguin, Texas.

By Tucker Stephenson

Published June 3, 2009

SEGUIN — When “Arts. For Life.” co-chair Jack Linden was looking for a piece of art to be raffled off at the June 27 event, he went straight to an expert.

Linden sought out local wood sculptor Marika Bordes and asked her if she would put her talents to use to benefit the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center — again.

“I have seen her previous work, she has one called ‘Balancing Act’ and I’ve been in love with that one for a long time,” Linden said. “I’ve seen some of her other work, she has one called ‘The Goddess’ which is probably seven feet tall. Then I’ve seen also, she’s doing a sculpture for the maternity ward for the new hospital, so there’s another thing.

“I’ve seen a lot of her work — she’s an incredibly creative person.”

But with Bordes already commissioned to start working on the maternity ward piece, she knew that she might find herself in a time-crunch trying to complete the piece for the fundraiser.

“Jack was here and he had asked me to do a sculpture,” Bordes said. “And because I was doing a commission for the hospital already, I told him that it would be difficult to finish it on time, but if I was working in cooperation with somebody else, I would be able to get it on time.”

So the search for a potential collaborator began, although it didn’t take long for Bordes to find one.

Enter recent Texas Lutheran University grad and former Seguin High School student Howard Crunk, who was already set to be donating a painting to the hospital’s cause.

“The name of Howard came up because I think Howard was going to give one of his paintings,” Bordes said. “And I said, ‘He is a good artist — we could work together.’”

So the partnership began, with Bordes — the recipient of first-place prizes in Seguin, Kerrville and New York City — playing the role of Mr. Miyagi to Crunk’s Daniel-san. For those that don’t know their “Karate Kid,” that just means that she acted as a mentor to the talented, young artist — although she admits that the learning process was a two-way street.

“He is not really my student,” Bordes said. “He learned from me and I learned from him. He has a sense of design of drawing that is absolutely remarkable. I couldn’t do it by myself because of a question of time, without the two of us, it was not possible.”

The sculpture, made from a Chinaberry tree, is now completed, described by the artist as being a man and woman wrapped into one single being — mirroring the creative collaboration that took place between Crunk and Bordes’ styles.

“I guess you could say the ebb and flow between a man and a woman becoming as one individual,” Crunk said. “I think I brought more of the naturalistic design aspect and I guess you would say she brought more of the spiritual concept.”

Throughout the project, Crunk said that he took some valuable lessons with him for the future, in which he plans to keep broadening his artistic horizons.

“It was a very abundant learning experience — I learned so much it’s hard to put it into words,” Crunk said before discussing his career goals. “First and foremost, it’s to continue to create art and then eventually, go on to other aspects, such as animation, digital art, etcetera.”

That future appears to be very bright, as Linden said that the finished product reflects the work of someone who is about to make their mark on the art community.

“It just showed him coming out,” Linden said. “Marika saw that in him — now he’s just bringing something out that I don’t think he knew he had and I think that’s one of the bright things about that — that he started seeing things in his drawing on that wood and then he started bringing it out, so it was marvelous seeing it.”

The sculpture is now officially part of the “Art. For Life” raffle, with tickets for the drawing being sold at the GRMC gift shop for $20 apiece, or two for $30. And until Jackson Auditorium opens its doors for the inaugural event — slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. three weeks from Saturday — the piece will also be on display at the gift shop.

That way, everyone can get an up-close view of something that Linden has known for quite a while.

“(Bordes) takes a piece of wood and sees something in it that I don’t see,” Linden said. “But I guess that what makes a good sculptor. Michelangelo always said that there’s somebody in the marble wanting to get out and I think she sees that in the wood.”

In addition to her work on the maternity sculpture, Bordes is working on her home studio, which she plans to have ready for an exhibition by August 15. More information on her artwork is available online at www.marikasculpture.com .

General admission seats for the Arts. For Life. event, which includes a performance by the Mid-Texas Symphony, are on sale now for $50 at the GRMC gift shop, as well as Gift & Gourmet, Cascades and the Area Chamber of Commerce.
One of the most constant, fascinating and sometimes frightening realities of life in Costa Rica is t

One of the most constant, fascinating and sometimes frightening realities of life in Costa Rica is the presence of bugs – and I immediately must clarify that I mean the general word used for insects rather than the specific classification of the true bug – the Hemiptera - which is, of course, equally well represented here. I have had many friends visit from the north country who swear that they’ll never be able to deal with the spiders or scorpions or army ants, but they tend to get caught up in the exotic extremeness of it all and before you know it, they are drawn into bug-watching.

Having been a bush-living Canadian, I’m used to our own serious bug situation – as in a season that comes on strong in May with annoying mosquitoes, followed soon by clouds of black flies, with localized deer and horsefly outbreaks throughout the summer (personally I think we should be calling the largest of them the “moose fly”.) Then there are the big green horned worms on the tomatoes, the nasty little earwigs that get everywhere, and other garden-variety (and -centric) insects who fill out the non-frozen season. We don’t need to think so much about these things between September and April except for a few indoor creatures like spiders and cockroaches.

Then there is Costa Rica. The little isthmus with the mostest for biologists of all kinds, it particularly feeds the needs of the entomologists. At the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada, where I studied horticulture, the most enthusiastic prof I had, bar none, who drew us all in with his love of the subject, was he who taught us about the fascinating world of insects and the huge role that they play in our lives. Except for a general awareness of the fleeting beauty of the monarchs, the gentle crawl of the daddy-long-legs, and the constant chorus of the crickets, I just wasn’t paying that much attention to the insect world. But since having my eyes and mind opened by this bug freak (I’m sorry, the name escapes me – Second Year Entomology, U of Guelph, 1982 – great guy), I have a much greater respect for the winged and wingless, 4- or 100-legged, often camouflaged, and always outrageously designed phenomena known as bugs.

Monteverde draws in many biologists because of its great biodiversity and welcoming atmosphere for researchers. It is hard not to get caught up in the interest and knowledge that abounds out of these maniacs, I mean scientists. A social gathering here starts with guests walking in the door barely able to control their excitement, shouting, “Hey, you’ll never believe what creature we saw on the way here”, and at some inevitable point in the evening, everyone gathers at the window, identifying the hundreds of flying insects drawn by the interior lights. Costa Rica is one big cocktail party of creepy crawlies.

I’ve been waiting for 19 years to be struck by a scorpion in Monteverde. I’ve lived in houses here notorious for these hidden, hot-tailed alacrans, have seen many, even taken a mother with her brood of babies on her back home with me to Canada (by mistake) one year, but despite my expectations have yet to be strung by a scorpion. I’ve watched an assassin bug drag a tarantula across the road, drank tea with a woman friend as regiments of army ants marched their way across our ceiling, and been bitten by something hidden in a bag that made my finger throb for hours. I’ve also been bitten by many ants, fleas, bush lice, no-see-ums and sand flies, the thing that gave me papalomoya. Of course there are the mosquitoes which I find much less ferocious here than in the north (laid back like the people) though they can carry a powerful punch of malaria or dengue. And then there was the squeezing of the botfly larva out of my boyfriend’s butt (see Kukulas of Cahuita and…)…I’ve had my share of bug-related moments.

A year ago I wrote about being at Wolf and Lucky Guindon’s house when the termites erupted and for several days the house was filled with gossamer wings. A couple of weeks ago, Roberto and I returned to Cahuita, arriving in the late afternoon. We were nervous about what we would find – perhaps someone would have come and robbed the place or some natural disaster would have left trouble behind. Fortunately, all was in order and we could just sit down and relax, make coffee, do a little dancing in the fading daylight to the calypso music on the radio. We started to notice a few flying critters in the air and soon it was hard to ignore them. In short order there were clouds of termites, that they call ‘duck ants’ on the Caribbean, encircling us, darting into our eyes, getting tangled in Roberto’s dreads, making serious pests of themselves. The clouds were thickest right around the casita as the termites were probably erupting out of the old wood that was used in the structure and for firewood. We moved our dancing down the path a ways but they quickly followed, drawn by our movement and body heat I guess.

Now seriously annoyed, we decided to go lay on the bed where we would be safe under the mosquito net, but no, they were too attracted to us. Somehow their not-so-small bodies were able to stick through the fine netting and in no time they were crawling on the bed, through the sheets, over and under our bodies, dropping their wings, not biting but menacing nonetheless. We finally gave up, changed our clothes from those littered with discarded wings and tiny black bodies, and went to town. When we returned hours later there were no more flying critters in the dark, but the mosquito net was dark with their little carcasses and shorn wings. Fortunately that has been the only night that the termites came to town.

I’ve grown used to shaking out my shoes and clothes in case of intruders, and that just becomes habit as many stories I’ve heard from people being stung by scorpions were attacked from within their clothes. At Roberto’s I am now paying closer attention to everywhere I put my body. Besides the fact that a snake could have moved under the bed at any time, there is also the impressive and somewhat unsettling variety of spiders – large, colorful and quick. It could get ugly if you put your foot right on them as they crawl across the end of the outdoor daybed.

On our way to Cahuita from Monteverde, we passed through San Carlos, near Arenal Volcano, and stayed a few days at my friend Zulay’s. The area is on the Atlantic side of the Continental Divide and though many miles inland, the vegetation is very similar to the Caribbean.

I stopped to visit Gerardo, a friend from my first year here in Costa Rica. He was always a talented musician as well as an artist with wood. A couple years ago he opened a Wood Art Gallery on the road to La Fortuna’s waterfall where he displays his own sculptures, done out of fallen wood, as well as the work of other artists.

This stunning collection of wooden creations is displayed with the majestic volcano as a backdrop. The big beast has been belching a lot lately – they had to vacate the National Park once again because of activity. For forty years, Arenal has been an active volcano and that gives it the record for the longest-running active volcano in the world. And she doesn’t disappoint! Unless, of course, she is shrouded in clouds. Zulay and I brought home a variety of heliconia plants from Gerardo’s ever-expanding garden. By the time Roberto and I left Zulay’s for Cahuita, we had a bag full of cuttings, roots, seeds and branches which we planted following the full moon that was upon us.

The yard around the casita is becoming more and more diverse with our combined enthusiasm for gardening – Roberto mostly concerned about food crops, me adding a few flowers and colorful leaf varieties like the crotons. Since we recently left again for about a month (back up here in Monteverde), we no doubt will head home in August wondering if not only the house is okay but if all these plantings have survived in our absence.

I’m appreciative that, while we are out gallivanting about, there are bats, flycatchers and kingfishers on guard back there, doing their part to keep the insect masses in check.

That alone the lizards, salamanders and geckos, when they aren’t busy eating each other.

We aren’t that concerned about the new plantings getting water as July is a rainy month on the Caribbean and we have already seen great regular downpours. I’ve been digging trenches trying to direct the water away from our living space, but the paths fill quickly. It is something to watch the little benign Quebrada Suarez rise into a heavily flowing river in a matter of an hour, especially having the knowledge that it rose so high last November that it wiped out Roberto’s former rancho and swept all his belongings closer to the sea.

We won’t start thinking about all the possible calamities awaiting us in Cahuita until we get closer to heading back. Instead we’ll enjoy our time here in Monteverde where mosquitoes are rare (we don’t have to sleep under a mosquito net) but scorpions could be lurking…anywhere…

And a quick word on the Wolf. He is doing okay, although he is now injecting insulin rather than regulating his diabetes with pills. I think that will help to get him regulated although he still has a way to go in keeping his diet under control. He is presently in San José being equipped with a 24-hour monitor as a follow up to tests that were done a month ago. He told me on the phone (where he sounded strong and fine) that he has still had episodes – I’m prone to think that the combination of medications that he is taking, and the inevitable changing of them, is what is messing with him. Wolf will be turning 79 on August 17 – age is no doubt a factor, but don’t we know that drugs, and the unknowns involved when you combine them, can mess with your mind and body…Wolf just walked in to Cafe Cabure where I am working and said that except for low blood pressure that he experienced, there are still no answers. But he looks very alive to me – and is asking for coffee, so all is normal.

As Teenage Kicks 2009 warmed up in The Quarry (and yes, it was during the adjacent sound checks), I

As Teenage Kicks 2009 warmed up in The Quarry (and yes, it was during the adjacent sound checks), I spoke to Clinton Chalenor about his work, and in particular about Primordial Soup his installation for the Shift Time Festival, carved using chain saw and hand tools from oak logs from a Shropshire estate. His favourite tool, a short-handled Gransfors Bruks adze from Sweden, was very effective. I want one (see image below)!

Clinton’s clear love of his work, and particularly of involving and educating young people through hands-on workshops, is clear. His influences are not other creatives as such, but the natural world about him, and especially microscopic life. He brings to his art experience from several stages in his life…as a botanist and zoologist, an artist and as a researcher into the history of photography and as someone who, like myself, has a lifelong love of wood in its natural form.

Likening – yet contrasting – his work to the pictures from the Hubble telescope, he feels that he is carving in 3D something that cannot be trualy represented, for electron microscope-type images (being a record of microscopic life) aren’t “real”, but are representational forms: the point being that they are “seen” by electrons rather than the eye. Last year saw him replicating xylem vessels at Kew Gardens in a similar exploration of microscopic life.

Primordial Soup: Wood Sculptures by Clinton Chalenor

Preferring to work and exhibit outdoors, Clinton enjoys evolving his pieces in situ over time. He enjoys this chance to build up meaningful relationships and strike up conversations with people who are perhaps quieter (than this blogger, certainly). No stranger to The Quarry where he made one of a series of dug-out canoes around four years ago, he has enjoyed catching up with previous acquaintances. In an electronic world, it makes you think hard about the frenetic and often sound-byte sized nature of our modern lives.

The ideas for Primordial Soup came from a series of sketches made perhaps five years ago. Who knows for sure how the first microscopic forms emerged; who is to say that some did not look like these? Further, the Darwin-associated evolution of man image is recounted in a series of spider-like creations of increasing size. More “modern” carvings of a dragonfly can also be seen carved by the youngsters from local schools. Primordial Soup can be sampled in the herbaceous border at the top of The Dingle, The Quarry, Shrewsbury from 4th July 09.

And his measure of satisfaction with his creations? That when he stands them upright, they make him laugh. And you know what they say about laughter.

Howdy y’all. I combined some sketches from last night and tonight. You’ll have to indulge my penchant for laminating wood together. I guess I’ve been a bit too focused on getting the chair together for this weekend. I worked on it again for quite a while tonight. I think it will turn out well. The dezign challenge from tonight presents a real opportunity for further development. The sketches represent the idea more than an aesthetic. I could see taking the notion of window mounted solar power cells through the product development process. I was considering changing the format of the dezign challenge next month to include some further development and exploration of a few of the ideas from this month. I get the impression that some of you would like to see that as well. I really appreciate all of the positive feedback, comments, and suggestions that I have received since I began this exercise. Your support has really helped motivate me and rejuvinated my creative spirit. Thank you.

If you have any more suggestions for improving the content or interface of this blog, please let me know. I’m always open to new ideas…

Steve Turnbull was born in Washington State where he got his BA in graphic design at the University of Washington. In 1985 he moved to Maui to create a studio and home in the Northeast Maui mountainswhere sculpting was his plan. Nestled on a cliff edge with panoramic views sits his studio along a road as curvy and twisting as his work. He translates his art with the mobius curve, where your eye continues to flow around the never ending shapes that invite the touch.

Steve works in wood, stone and bronze. His shapes enhance what nature has given him. ” The medium is my partner. I take away what needs to be removed to release the form from within.” ”I never force a sculpture, I work with what is there and each time it is a surprise. It may be a female form, an abstract, or the shape of an animal.” Elegant flowing shapes are what comes to mind when one sees Steve’s work.

Sculpting for 22 years has welcomed many collectors from around the world. Public and private Corporations have aquired his work. Neiman Marcus in Honolulu showcase a large wood abstact in the entry to their store. Steve’s work is also honored to sit in the royal collection of the Thai Monarchy to name a few. To see more of his work, please go to turnbullstudios.org.

Neiman Marcus selected Steve Turnbull as their premiere artist in their Honolulu store. They wanted to showcase some of the Hawaiian Islands local talent, while honoring the taste of Neiman’s signature towards abstract work. Steve was hand chosen state wide from Hawaiian artists to create a piece of artwork that reflected the islands. The island being surrounded by the Pacific was Steve’s inspiration. The never ending flow of the oceans waves and motion are seen in this piece.

"Duet" Ohai wood, Lahaina Galleries, Maui.

“Duet” is another sculpture of Steve’s that seems to move when you gaze at it. This is the dance of the energy of when two are in sink. Ohai wood is known as the Monkey Pod tree or the Hawaiian rain tree. It’s beautiful contrast in grain of the sap wood and dark wood are hard to find.

I often get solicited by other artists/designers via email & mail. Most I haven’t found use for YET, but once in a while I am genuinely suprised and honoured to hear from truly talented people. Just yesterday, I received a lovely greeting card from an artist on Gabriola Island, Elias Wakan. I visited his website today and am thoroughly impressed by his meticulous work. I’m particularly amazed by “Ruff Estimate”.

Courtesy of www.eliaswakan.com

It is made of hemlock and resembles an Elizabethan collar piece and its winding curves is absolutely beautiful. It is the result of a miscalculation and I cannot think of a better word to describe this piece other than serendipity. It just shows you that art can come to you in many different ways.

Thank you Elias for visiting my website and for the greeting card!

Wood carving in India is a traditional art which is passed on by master craftsmen through the generations. Wood craft is the artistic practice of shaping and decorating wooden objects. India has had an ancient tradition of wood carving and wood decoratives. There has been a complete revival of the traditional and antique wood craft, owning to its uniqueness and demand in India and abroad. Indian artisans are experimenting with designs to create a blend of traditional and modernwoodcraft.
