Last week Senator Harkin was talking about a subpoena to coerce insurance industry executives to exp

Last week Senator Harkin was talking about a subpoena to coerce insurance industry executives to explain the current round of rate increases. With just a little bit of research one can find examples of rate increases between 25% and 54% all over the country and from many different insurance companies. The Democratic majority’s rhetoric and their massive heath care bill are clearly based on the assumption that the evil insurance companies are behind the problem and that government needs to force them into line.

I found one liberal article that was decrying the fact that insurance companies that were paying 95% of each premium dollar for medical costs in the early ’90’s are only paying out 81% now. That fact was apparently fuel for another of Harkin’s speeches, where he cited a 428% increase in insurance company profit margins, while worker salaries increased only 29%. Go ahead, see if that doesn’t seem like a blatant attempt to mislead with statistics – I’ll wait.

Recently, the AP’s Calvin Woodward reported: “health insurance profit margins typically run about 6 percent’’ of revenue, a return “that’s anemic compared with other forms of insurance and a broad array of industries.’’

So, Senator Harkin, I say let’s do it. All the claims (no pun intended) don’t add up. Let’s put this massive misguided attempt to take over 1/6th of the economy on hold. Let’s get to the bottom of what is really driving the escalating cost of health care. Then let’s work on that.

All you insurance company executives, are you just waiting for the government to take over your business? You are grossly at fault in this situation by hiding the facts from the public you “serve”. If you are tired of the Congress trying to make you the villain, don’t make it so hard to get to the truth.

With pinwheel eyes spinning hypnotically, the public sits glued to the unraveling of the Tiger Woods

With pinwheel eyes spinning hypnotically, the public sits glued to the unraveling of the Tiger Woods’ persona as mistress after mistress comes to the forefront. Some of these “mistresses” are more credible than others, but nevertheless, where there is this much smoke, there is not just a fire but in this case more likely a forest fire.

Tiger Woods is no doubt one of the best if not THE best golfer in the history of the sport, and that cannot be denied; however, the all-American boy facade is rapidly crumbling along with future endorsements. As the beet-faced public grows disenchanted, they are picking up their torches and meeting in the village square intent on marching to Tiger’s Floridian Windermere mansion where between the tree and fire-hydrant, Tiger couldn’t decide between his wood or his iron that fateful night several days ago. What’s becoming clear is that the persona of Tiger Woods was based on a hoax — and a hoax this large cannot last as long as it has without a complicit media — all worthy of a new soap opera entitled “As the Golfball Turns.”

Speaking of the complicit media, the largest hoax yet perpetrated on the public is anthropogenic, or man-made, global warming; hackers recently infilitrated the file-servers of the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit in England, which is the home of the famed “hockey stick graph” representing “increasing, man-made, global warming temperatures”; at least, the “man-made” part is correct. Who knew that Great Britain’s major source of exports is the manufacture of the man-made global warming hoax. I waited to write about this until I heard the lamestream media break the story — ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, the New York Times, Los Angeles Time, et al.: I still hear crickets chirping.

Like the Tiger Woods’ persona, the media has been majorly complicit in the hoax of “man-made global warming.” How many conferences by the High Priestess of the Religion of Man-Made Global Warming – Al Gore – have to be cancelled due to unseasonably cold and frigid temperatures before the masses realize that the High Priestess has no clothes (and probably should because of the frigid cold)?

So what has been the response to this breaking news? The braintrust Democrat Senator from California Barbara Boxer wants to criminally investigate — not the unversity or the “scientists” who have been involved in the hoax, but THE HACKER who exposed the hoax! That is akin to wanting to criminally investigate Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein for helping to break the Watergate story resulting in the downfall and resignation of Republican President Richard Nixon. In Boxer’s world, bringing down Richard Nixon — however it was done – should be celebrated but exposing the man-made global warming scandal should be a criminal act. Many more are complicit in this cover-up than just the media…

Despite mentioning yesterday that I would be posting an obituary to Edward Woodward, in the process

Despite mentioning yesterday that I would be posting an
obituary to Edward Woodward, in the process of adding an
entry to A Disintegration Loop (the blog I use to collect
the tired scribbles I collect in the morning having
attempted to write down what I was dreaming) I noticed
Edward's name pop up part way through. It seems the name
is all about the place at the minute:

Edward Bedford

As tribute, or rather garbled confused nocturnal
rambling, I thought I should put it up here, with
fictional additions. You can read the original to
check the differences if you're that way inclined.
Most of it seems to be about me drinking, which
says a lot for the state of my mind when I
originally conjured the thing (sometime in 2006/7
I think, prior to moving to York for the first time
any way)

"In Luton, well...initially some nondescript countryside
outside Luton, where a small community has sprung up
around an impressive tree, with a face carved in to it.
There are buildings of various kinds, a factory, a
threshers (in the tradional sense of that word), a
milliners and a pub called 'The ____ Horse'. I go there
with friends, as a sort of pub crawl. Start in the
country and move to the town is the idea. Fresh air and
all that. We take up a table in front of the bar. Behind
us is a window with a view of the tree and then rolling
hills. many people are outside, and seem to be trying to
get in. For once, they are not zombies.
The staff treat their presence as a joke. I drink several
beers, all of which are good as I remember it (this was
obviously important to me; I maintain a habit of writing
down what I've had to avoid drinking things I hate and
have forgotten the name of...sad but practical). I also
order food. On the menu, the food I like is 6.95. I eat
it, but when it comes to paying, a charge of £26 is made.
Apparently I ate some incredibly pricey popcorn. I don't
understand how this has happened. I protest, loudly and
for an extended period. The barmaid seems angry. I think
she is married to the owner, making her the landlady.
Her husband looks very much like Edward Woodward. He
offers no help. Leaving my companions behind I storm off
without paying for anything.

Outside is deserted, the odd horde of people are gone.
I stroll leisurely in to the town, knowing I am not being
chased for non payment. Back in Luton I attempt to board
a train at the new station (located where P&T music used
to be, if you know the area). I then remember that I am
meant to be meeting Chris for a drink. I make my way past
several establishments; one is called 'Pete's Place'.
They are all along High Town Road.

When I finally reach the pub where Chris resides, he is
on the way out, trying to find me. We return. He too has
ordered food. He says 'I thought I was eating alone again
this week' but I am unsure what to make of this. I respond
by recounting my story. Two identical men sit near us,
staring intently at both me and the meal Chris is eating.
Eventually I order a drink, which is called Harvey's
_______. It comes in a small glass and looks like coke.
I try and pay with a ten pound note but the barmaid wont
accept it as she believes I have a smaller denomination."

I have been wanting to do this for a long time, and now it has finally happened. I had the opportunity to come together with the band Poor Boys Relief and create a video with them. I went to Ferris State around the same time this band spawned there, and we have always wanted to do something on an official level. That day finally came and it was a great experience. The band chose their song, “Mexico” off their new CD entitled, Woodward. I ran the camera, and offered direction when I could. Special thanks to Lauren Sarkady for her behind the scenes help. Edited by me. Thanks to the band for their cooperation. Hopefully more music video production is in my future.

As my interest in Cognition started from Organization Theory, I will start formally by showing how various aspects of OT are in fact, deducible from the Divine Source of Wisdom, viz., the Majestic Qur’an.

Let me start with the concept of equifinality, a very important construct of the entire spectrum of System Dynamics. For the uninitiated, equifinality simply says that there are myriad ways to reach dynamic equilibria. The first thing that comes to my mind about a similarity with equifinality is the Hijrah. As we see, there were two migrations – the first one to Abysinnia and the second to Madinah, and in the end, both of them were for the same purpose, viz., the emancipation of humanity from the moral depravity it had sunk into. So, equifinality simply states that the higher states can be achieved through variant processual mechanisms. Systems thinking calls for visualizing the import of the cycle of events, rather than the elements themselves. Elements by themselves have little relevance unless they undertake the Hijrah. Thus, the same Bedouin and Pagan Quraysh who were immersed in their trades and frolic, suddenly have the greatest meaning, when they have undergone the Hijrah to emerge in the next stage.

This also resonates with the concept of emergent strategy- the deliberate part of strategy was to emancipate humanity, the form it takes is always emergent, viz., through the pen, through physical struggle or through intellectual argument.

Now, let us see how the famous sociotechnical theory is dealt with in the Qur’anic perspective. This theory states that any organization is composed of two cores- a social and a technical one – and superior performance hinges on optimizing both these cores. The theory has been actively propagated by thinkers like Trist, Woodward and Thomson. In the Qur’anic sciences, if we see both social and technical aspects are emphasized – for example, the word ‘Aqqimus Salah’ is not only a call to technically observe the prayer, but also to preserve its social aspect. Each and every instruction of the Divine Message reverberates with both these aspects. Zakah is technically 2.5% of annual savings, but it is again distributed socially. Similarly, Hajj and Zabiha have technical and social components. It is only in this manner that both these aspects of human nature can be optimized in congruence.

Statecraft is the climax of these progressions. It is the pinnacle towards which all human energies can be positively harmonized, and which controls in an unobtrusive way all human activities. This is the reason why the Qur’an calls for governance based on Divine Principles, the rationale being that only Divine knowledge can enforce discipline amongst disparate humans. This is not much different from what Charles Barnard, the American theorist says, when he talks about the moral force guiding human endeavour to the zenith of achievement. Humanity beckons the implementation of this Supreme code of conduct to enable it to cross artificial boundaries like race, ethnicity as well as limits of achievement.

So this guy owns a house on a remote Irish island with a small population. The house disappears when he’s overseas. When he investigates, he (and the police from the mainland) hit a “wall of silence.” 170 people in a space less than 3 square miles, and nobody heard or saw anything. The entire island is made up of artisans, living “off the grid,” under the shadow of the ruined bell tower of a sixth-century monastery. All that’s missing is Eddie Woodward with a corncob up his ass, watching a slow-motion, soft-focus orgy.

I’m serious as twat cancer, you guys. Their tourism information says that they are literally “one of the last places in Ireland that holds onto, rather than simply paying lip service to, traditional Irish culture.” They speak their own dialect and they have a fucking king of the island. There’s a ferry service. That’s it. And if one of the islanders sabotages your pontoon plane, you’re completely and utterly fucked. If a stone structure can be burned and demolished with no justice, there’s about a 247.9% chance that nobody will even report your ass missing.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that it’s a testament to humanity that a place like this exists. And that I want to be the king. Imagine it… a whole tribe of isolated heathens, keeping the community afloat with arts and crafts, desecrating Christian monuments and sacrificing outlanders to improve the Fimo clay bead harvest. Me and Diane Cilento sitting on the floor post-anal, laughing and singing: “Fair maid, says he, your kettle’s cracked. The cause is plainly told. There hath so many nails been drove, mine own could not take hold!” It’s so beautiful, I’m leaking from both ends.

Of course, I could manufacture a similar environment with a little indoctrination and a big-ass wall, but I love the authenticity of the always-been-like-this heresy. And as much as I despise children, I would enjoy watching my minions shit out the next generation of cryptic, increasingly malevolent and intelligent inhabitants of my private Eden. (No anesthesia, of course, because I feed from the suffering of women.) Especially when they get to be about eight or nine and I have the “responsibility” of organizing their first gangbangs. Nothing like the pitter-patter of spooge dripping from cunts that can’t even vote yet.

Now, I know what you’ll say. “You can’t do that to children! I’m bringing the whole police force to put an end to your debauchery! Wait… What the fuck is this? Some kind of statue? Fuck! Let me go! You don’t want to do this! Some part of you is still human! You know that your raffia crop has nothing to do with appeasing the ancient god of dried floral arrangements! Dear Jesus, save me! Arrraggghhhh!”

Or something like that. You know.

Forget sex in the city, it’s all about sleeping in the city.

Bringing their latest creation to downtown Boston; the Morgans Hotel Group, has just expanded their portfolio with the upcoming grand opening of The Ames Hotel Boston.

This 115 room boutique hotel is sure to become an instant hit, nestled between the Financial District and Downtown Crossing. Interiors were designed by the Rockwell Group in combination with Cambridge Seven Associates. Both of whom assisted in the restoration of the beautiful, mosaic tile, barrel vaulted entry ceiling, brass staircase and stone exterior, all to the tune of $40 + million.

Aside from the intriguing interiors, the hotel is located close to major transit, historical destinations and is surrounded by a variety hip restaurants and vibrant night spots. However with noted chef Mark Goldberg (of Mistral and Top of the Hub fame) working his magic in the house restaurant; Woodward, you may decide to eat in.

The 19th century Ames building- a local landmark, is a Romanesque Revival structure that shadows the Old State House and City Hall. As a former office building which sat unoccupied for a number of years, this new hotel is proving that Downtown Crossing still has the ability to attract new businesses and hopefully a young professional crowd. Joining the masses of upscale condo towers, chic restaurants and busy theatres, the Ames Hotel is symbolic of the gentrification taking place in the former Combat Zone.

Boston tourists can now sleep in style and comfort, and who knows, maybe the Ames Hotel will bring more movies, money and mayhem to the downtown core.

BF: ¿Conoces Big Fam, nuestro blog, proyecto?

This past year I have clocked more miles on my BMX bike than I have in the years. I’m not too

This past year I have clocked more miles on my BMX bike than I have in the years. I’m not too sure why that is but it feels amazing. I have met so many new friends, met up with old friends, and thoroughly enjoyed bikes again. In March of this year, I purchased a camera and that has undoubtedly helped with the initiative to ride more. But I think more than anything I just enjoy riding again. A lot of things have changed, no more 44t ‘dinner plate’ chainrings, no more Alex Triple Wall wheels, 36 as opposed to 48. But somethings have remained the same. Egos, bike throwers, and genuinely chill people who just love to ride bikes. I would like to think I fall into the last category. Between the bike thefts this year, riding with some of the most talented riders in the world, and witnessing the kindness and outpouring of support for those who have lost their valued possessions. I eagerly await what my future in BMX holds. I have learned a lot, and I hope I’ve created some positive and memorable moments this year. So as winter hits in this damned state. I look back and smile, not something enough people in BMX do anymore. So to all the haters, the frowning faces, the egoistical bastards, the people that never clap for you, they think you’re whacker than them ’cause they’re the masters and I bet disaster is caused in their mind when you flow and plaster their jaws shut with a dope line. (Thanks E&A)… I’m calling you out, smile… it’s just BMX.

Back in the late 90s, when I was just starting out what’s turned into a 13-year career (so far

Back in the late 90s, when I was just starting out what’s turned into a 13-year career (so far, knock on wood) in journalism, I had a job interview for a reporter position at a relatively large metro daily. I won’t say which one, but it was a century old back then and today it doesn’t exist any more, having merged with the other daily in town years ago. At the interview, the managing editor said he didn’t have much time to talk to me. Then he lectured me for 20 minutes about his newspaper’s proud history and fine staff, asked me one question and then told me to leave some clips with his publisher’s secretary.

His question: “Are you a reporter, or are you a writer?”

I stared at his desk. Stacks of paper, a plant, no bling to speak of, miles of stained oak. No answers, either. “Uh, I guess I’m both,” I said.

“There’s a difference, you know.”

“Yes, I know.”

At the time, I thought I did. Bob Woodward, for example, used to have the rep of being a great gatherer of information, an expert at cultivating sources, a helluva REPORTER, but no William Shakespeare. Remember in All the President’s Men, some on the Washington Post staff wondered whether English was Bob’s first language? At the same time, I am today as I have always been moved by great journalism because of the writing. I’ve had the honor over the years to work with some talented reporters, columnists and even editors. I read The New Yorker regularly, not just for the fiction, but for the reporting, Seymour Hersh and the like. Some of the pieces by the reporters, feature writers and photographers at the York Daily Record, my new home, are breathtaking. However, I’ve read some pieces at other papers where the reporters got great information — you could tell they’d busted their asses — only the writing didn’t convey it well enough.

But none of it, good or bad, is fiction writing. Not just because fiction isn’t true. The fact of the matter is, in most respects, I wouldn’t call newspaper journalism creative nonfiction, either. There’s a gulf between newspaper journalism and creative writing. And while it’s possible to excel at both, being adept at one doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll do well with the other.

For me, the big difference has always been degree of distance. As a reporter, dealing in facts, you’re on the outside. Regardless of how great an interviewer you are, it is impossible for you to get inside your source’s head. You can observe and provide objective detail, and the discovery of those details and the dissemination of them is the essence of the art. But you can’t say “I” in journalism and mean anybody but yourself. In journalism you are an objective observer of something that cannot involve yourself (all debates about whether true objectivity exists aside).

As a fiction writer, and often as a creative nonfiction writer, the story doesn’t just involve you. It is you.

It’s a problem that’s plagued my writing and it’s difficult to overcome. Fiction writing is a totally different art form from journalism. The two are only related in terms of words. Sometimes in terms of narrative (there’s some really great narrative journalism out there). But in terms of voice, character, point of view — there is no relation.

I know there are a lot of writers who started out as, or became at one point or another, journalists. Hemingway. Steinbeck. Graham Greene. In A Moveable Feast, Hemingway speaks almost disparagingly of his journalism — it was something he had to do for the money. Instead, when he lived in Paris he was learning to be a fiction writer. I don’t share his disdain for journalism, but I do agree that the two are totally different art forms.

I used to think writing fiction meant reporting a story in your head. It’s more than that. It’s INHABITING a story in your head. It’s BECOMING your sources. I’ve been advised by writing instructors to forget everything I learned about journalism when writing fiction.

Writers? Reporters? I need some input here, folks. Am I right? How can you be both a journalist and a writer? Is the separation as stark as I believe it to be?
