This is a really great game to play with friends who love words and things.

All you need are some Scrabble tiles. They need to have numbers on them, to count points afterwords (get my joke? get it?)

So. Spread all the tiles out face down. One by one, flip them up. When someone sees a word, he just yells it out and it is “his”.

The object of the game is to have as many point as possible.

Then, as more words are created, the fun really begins. If Player A has the word “mate” and just shouts “Mate!” when he sees it,Player B might say “team!” and he “steals ” it from A. Then Player C might say “Tame!” and it becomes his.

The only catch to this super crazy word mania is this- You can’t make forms of words.

For example, if you had the word “creator”, you couldn’t just add the letter “s” to it to make it plural. You also aren’t allowed to make plural verbs (jump) into singular form (jumps) or past tense (jumped).

You can add to your own words to make it harder for other players to steal them.

Here are some good word paths that I like to use.

1. Tea-eat-ate…team, mate, meat, tame…meant

2. are, era, ear… care, race… cream…scream…miracles (you need an “I” and an “L”)

Comment any questions! And have fun!

My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules:

Avoid Alliteration. Always.

Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

Avoid cliches like the plague. (They’re old hat.)

Employ the vernacular.

Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.

Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.

It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.

Contractions aren’t necessary.

Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.

One should never generalize.

Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “”I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.””

Comparisons are as bad as cliches.

Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than necessary; it’s highly superfluous.

Profanity sucks.

Be more or less specific.

Understatement is always best.

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

One word sentences? Eliminate.

Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.

The passive voice is to be avoided.

Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.

Who needs rhetorical questions?

Daily Program for 4/1/2013 Today we will be writing a word scramble function in C++. This take a str

Daily Program for 4/1/2013

Today we will be writing a word scramble function in C++. This take a string and return a scrambled version of the input. It isn’t too hard to conceptualize the program, but if you’re having trouble thinking about what it should do then think about the word scramble puzzles where they give you a string of characters which is an anagram for a plain English word.

Problem Statement for the Word Scramble Program:

Take a string as input from the user and return a string containing the same characters, but in different order. The differential ordering should be randomized using a non-constant seed so that every call to the function with the same word produces a different permutation of the string (barring the same seed).

Code:

#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <cstdlib>
#include <ctime>

using namespace std;

string scrambleWord(string s) {
   srand(time(0));
   unsigned int rIndex;

   string outstring = "";

   while(s.empty() != true){
      rIndex = rand() % s.size();
      outstring += s[rIndex];
      s.erase(rIndex, 1);
   }
   return outstring;
}

int main(int argc, const char *argv[]) {
   string s;
   cout << "Give me a string to scramble: ";
   cin >> s;
   cout << "The string '" << s << "' became '" << scrambleWord(s) << "'" << endl;
   return 0;
}

Explanation:

In order to nicely format our program, we define the scrambleWord function, which takes as input a string and returns a scrambled version of the input string. In this function, we first initialize the seed to the system time of the user’s machine. This way we can assure that every call to the scramble function will output a different permutation of the string. I should note that since the seed is based off of the system time, the seed will be the same if multiple calls are made in a short period of time (seconds) then the outputs will be the same. A simple fix to this would be to increment the integer input to the time function. To scramble the word we choose a random integer in the range of (0..size of string) and add that value to our out string. We then erase the index we just used to assure that it doesn’t get called again. Since the string size is finite and we decrement it by one each time the loop iterates, we can be assured that the loop will reach an endpoint where the input string is empty. Once all the characters are removed from the input string, we return the out string and are done!

I hope you enjoyed this simple word scramble program! Next time we will be expanding this idea and scrambling sentences!

I’m a word game addict (or at least I’m beginning to think so).

One I can quickly access.A certain kind of word game (preferably an app on my iPhone kind of game).

Scrabble, Wordfeud and now Ruzzle (introduced to me by my lovely sister-in-law).

Problem: I play… at least once a day. Not an entire game, but a word or two.

Remedies: I’ve tried turning my phone off, tried scheduling in play time, tried telling myself that an app is not as much fun as actually sitting down with people to play scrabble – you know the old-fashioned board game way- but how many times have I actually sat down with friends or family to play scrabble?… well… do you mean in the last year? Well I would say… (thinking here really hard)… 0 times. In the last 10 years.

So I found a replacement. It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s fun… but it’s addictive.

Homeopathic Remedies: I’m a writer, words are what I do, it’s ok.

(or) It’s good for the brain (somewhere there must be a study about how word games are good for the brain though I still need to check that theory).

(or) Well it’s not like I’m stealing, robbing or voting for any right-wing fanatic out there looking to destroy any last drop of faith in mankind (and womankind).

Exactly! That last thought makes my game addiction seem so insignificant. I meant app on my iPhone, not gambling. See, I don’t even gamble. Except with my time. But it’s not TV! It’s literally… wait what was I talking about?

Sorry my phone just beeped. Random player waiting.

It hardly constitutes as an addiction. I’m not even that good at them. Addicts are pretty good at what they do aren’t they?

It could be a severe case of creative brain exercising doesn’t do anyone any harm distraction.

My phone just beeped again. Random player is impatient.

Well… I guess I’ll just play this one game real quick and if you happen to have the Ruzzle app – you can find me under overlunch… Wordfeud under dehnelimafilm…

…you know, in case you are up for a game.

Brad Noel

Brad Noel Candidate for Jackson School Board

This week’s topic will be devoted to spelling in Jackson R-2. As most of you are aware when the 2009-2010 school year began 3 years ago you were told that the district would no longer be teaching spelling via weekly spelling tests because they didn’t want your kids to memorize a list of words, they wanted them to learn how to spell them using the rule method or other various methods. Upon hearing this information many, if not all, began to question this theory asking how will you know if my child can spell correctly if you don’t have tests to check their progress? This theory at the time was another fad teaching method that was being tried in various districts around the nation and Jackson R-2 felt the need to jump on board and experiment with your children’s future just like they did several years ago when they jumped onto the whole language spelling bus, no more phonics, only to have the wheels come flying off in a few years leaving your children plied up in heap of bad spellers.

As I mentioned earlier JacksonR-2 has once again jumped on another spelling bus that has not been proven and is in fact discouraged in recent studies by J. Richard Gentry, Ph.D., the very man that Jackson references in their current spelling program. In his books and articles he uses terms that you may have heard in the last few years like “writing workshop” and “word sorts” and “word games” all of which are followed by, in his expert opinion, as “WRECKS!!!” Dr. Gentry also in his expert opinion says that the best way to teach spelling is with a word list and the pretest- study-posttest format. You may ask yourself, if the man that the district uses as a reference says that tests are the best way to teach spelling then why are they not adhering to his advice? Why are our children being used as experimental game pieces? Who makes this decision to use this teaching method? Well the answer to all of those questions is quite simple, the Jackson R-2 School Board whether directly or indirectly have approved this practice and when parents and teachers come forward with concerns then it’s their job to make sure the wishes of the public are addressed.

Spelling is a crucial part of your child’s education as it lays the foundation for them to become good readers. The theory here in Jackson right now is backwards in their thinking that good readers make good spellers and I am sure that most of you can attest to the fact that your child may be reading fairly well but they consistently misspell words that they read every day. I am sure you all know that your elementary aged child does not have a spelling book that they bring home, if they have no spelling book then how does the teacher know what words are important for them to be able to spell? According to Dr. Gentry it is entirely too time consuming and too complex for teachers to choose words and implement a weekly spelling unit without the resources typically found in a good spelling book, so why don’t we have a spelling book? Poor management! Let me ask you this, could you read the following sentence if you had not been taught the proper spelling of these words in advance? I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. It is because your brain was trained the correct spelling of the words in the preceding sentence through practice, repetition, and memorization that you were able to read it even though the letters were jumbled. A weekly word list and a weekly spelling test should not be looked at as taboo, it is essential; it is necessary, and it is the best possible way to teach your children to spell as research shows. Evidence to support this fact is present in the Junior High where some students are actually given weekly spelling lists and tests, which begs the question if it’s okay for Junior High why is it not okay for the elementary students where the foundations of spelling are supposed to be instilled? If elected to represent you the public and the parents on the Jackson R-2 School Board in April I will fight to bring spelling back into our classrooms so that our children are prepared for life in the 21st century.

“Word on the Street” is a fun game for two or more players (preferably an even number of players). It’s a pretty quick word game that is good for all ages (the box says 12 and up, but as a family game younger kids can play too). Do not let the suggestion that the game is a “family game” deter you intellectual types, the game is often really challenging when played with a group of adults!

The game involves teams competing against each other by spelling out words that will allow them to capture tiles. The first team that captures 8 tiles wins.

Tiles, cards, board and timer.

Inside the box is:

1) a game board

2) set of cards

3) alphabet tiles (with no vowels, J, Q, X, or Z)

4) game timer

Place letters in alphabetical order on the green strip.

Setting up the game is easy. Just place the tiles on the corresponding letter down the green strip through the middle of the board.

Split the players into 2 teams and each team should sit on an opposite side of the board. It is helpful to sit on the long edges of the board so each team can easily reach any letter. Flip a coin or rock paper scissor to choose which team will go first.

Be sure to pick a card color before you start to play.

Each card states a category. Teams will draw a card to pick a word to play. There are two color of cards (front and back) so the group as a whole should decide which color card to play for the duration of the game.

The team that is in action is the “team on the street”.

2) The team NOT on the street flips the timer as soon as the team on the street lays down the card.

3) The team on the street picks a word to play that falls into the category, in this example “A Hot Drink”. It is clearly stated in the rules to “Word on the Street” that there is no rule that the opposing team has to stay quiet.

Words chosen must: be a single word (no spaces or hyphens unless the hyphen is part of the name…for example “Winston-Salem”); be spelled correctly; and fall into the drawn category.

For this example, let’s say the team on the street chooses the word ‘cappuccino’.

4) The team on the street moves one letter at a time in the word, spelling it out loud as they go. The letter is pulled as it is said towards the team on the street. The tile is moved ONE space EACH time it is said. Although there are no vowels or ‘J, Q, X, Z’ letters to move, if those letters appear in the word they must still be said. 			_height: expression(this.scrollHeight >= 410 ? '410px' : 'auto');

5) In this example of the word “cappuccino”, the ‘c’ is moved towards the team on the street 3 times and that is enough to get it off the board. Once a letter is off the board it is captured and counts as one of that team’s 8 tiles needed to win. A tile is not nessesarily captured every time a team plays, in fact that would be very unlikely.

All of these steps must be completed before the timer runs out of time. As soon as the timer runs out, hands must come of all tiles.

It is now the other team’s turn as the team on the street. Start again at step 1, moving tiles in the opposite direction towards the new team on the street.

The new team on the street will work to get some of the tiles moved by the first team back towards them. In this example, after cappuccino, while the ‘c’ is gone, the new team on the street may want to play a word with a ‘p’ or two to try to get ‘p’ letter back on their side of the street.

The game continues back and forth until one team has 8 tiles.

What if the opposing team thinks the team on the street did something wrong?

Then they would issue a Word on the Street challenge.

If the opposing team thinks the word isn’t spelled correctly, make a decision by consensus or by looking it up in a dictionary.

If the spelling is found correct: the letter tiles remain in their new positions and the team raising the challenges loses their next turn.

If the spelling is incorrect: all tiles moved BEFORE the error remain in their new positions and the tile moved in error and all subsequent tiles are returned to their precious positions.

If the selection is in fact two words rather than a compound word or incorrectly uses a hyphen: all letter tiles for the word are returned to their previous positions before that turn happened.

This is a fun, quick game that is at it’s best if you’ve got well matched teams.

It is available on Amazon for about $20.

My coworkers told me about it and it is such a blast. Not only is it fun but it’s educational and probably helpful in preventing issues like Alzheimer’s. It’s very similar to Boggle in that you have a certain amount of letters and you make as many words as you can. The letters have to connect to one another so it is limiting. You only have two minutes to find as many words as possible.

You challenge your friends for three rounds and see who can get the most points. And it’s free.

If you’re looking for something to play then try this out and let me know what you think. It’s okay if you start out not getting many words. My suggestion? Try as many combinations and crazy thoughts as you can. Did you know “es” is a word in English? Well, it is, so try anything and everything. Good luck!

While everyone is a geek, the level of table-top game geekery varies greatly. Thus, the birth of a new page: Geeky Game Terms to help those who might find themselves saying “what the heck does RPG mean!?” This page is on the top menu bar, next to the “about” tab.

This dictionary is a living document, so new terms will appear as needed.
First introduced to the public in the mid 1950s, Scrabble has gone on to be one of the biggest selling board games in history—and is currently gaining legions of new fans in the online world.
Perhaps the fascination of SCRABBLE lies in the fact that the game combines just the right amount of luck with just the right amount of skill.
Scrabble is a game of words that can be played up to four players or as little as two players where the players earn points by creating words using tiles with letters on a board. The scrabble game is actually a very interesting game as it tests your creativity and ability to think on your toes. Scrabble also helps in learning vocabulary and thinking logically.

Here you will find the words themselves, presented in freeverse as simply and compactly as possible. The order of the words is not changed; there is nothing added or removed, but punctuated in order to make it easier to follow the words–something just short of prose, perhaps. And although the line lengths appear problematic, it so happens that there are 14 of these lines.

I should state that the words were originally written this way, although you might have suspected that the original form was presented in part 5. In any case, the words are easily understood now.

Just read the words. Think about what they mean; perhaps in answer to the original prompt:

I remember my grandmother and I playing Scrabble many years ago, and she always won – she also did crossword puzzles – need I say more!?

I recently went to a French club activity where we played French Scrabble – there were five of us playing – expats trying our best to use all our letters (les pions). This took some time, brain intensive effort, and a little help from the French hostess, who kindly served tea/coffee and cookies. Thank goodness score wasn’t being kept, and you could verify words in the official Scrabble word approved reference book, if needed. Words were also accepted conjugated in all the tenses, even in passe simple! Ooh, la, la!
