Are you ever talking to someone and they say something that makes you want to punch them in the face? This happens to me on a fairly regular basis. What they say is neither offensive or hostile; it’s just annoying. Clichéd phrases are the worst and there is a reason they are strongly suggested against in formal writing.

‘Single and ready to mingle’

I blame MTV for this one. In any of those ‘reality’ shows when the person is prompted to answer a question regarding their relationship status and the answer is single, it is followed closely by ‘and ready to mingle.’ It’s like as soon as the word ’single’ leaves their mouth their brain automatically releases the rest of the phrase. There are however, some kids who have redeemed themselves by having a slight look of disgust on their face once they’ve realized what they’ve done.

‘Gal pals’

(Cue exasperated sigh) It’s not that I hate the phrase; it’s just that it’s often used incorrectly. Gal pals are two women in a platonic relationship i.e. Oprah and Gayle (allegedly).

Often I see/hear the that term associated with real life lesbians, “Jodie Foster was seen out for lunch with her gal pal.” News flash: Jodie Foster and her ‘gal pal’ are effing. One two ladies eff they cease to be gal pals any longer.

So, if ever we are in conversation and you are the recipient of a face punch it is likely that you have uttered one of these inexcusable phrases.

The differences are as follows:

• The indentation of the non-first lines in the list paragraph are aligned with the first line.
• The list marker is not the symbol “o” but the original circle symbol provided by browsers.
• The spacing between list paragraphs is a bit bigger, in order to improve the readability.

This is my first post of the WordPress Blog.

What I'm eating - Mattias Fish - מטיאס

I’m munching away on some sort of pickled/oiled Dutch red-colored fish with onion slices.  In Hebrew the fish is called מטיאס but I have no idea what it is in English.  Some sort of red herring?  Who knows.  The online translator couldn’t tell me.

Why am I doing this?   I’m starving.  And it was an impulse buy at the the local organic grocery store.  They tell you never to go grocery shopping hungry… Well, there’s a very good reason for that.  I usually don’t, but sometimes (like when you get over 1,000 page views in a day – thank you WordPress.com for featuring my blog!) you’re really inspired to cook something new and crazy and somewhat exotic.

I left the store with four cans of coconut milk – of varying brands, prices, and on a long spectrum of organic to preservative-filled – more organic tamari soy sauce, sesame oil, shredded seaweed, miso paste, Japanese tofu, Thai green curry, 9% fat cottage cheese (for my sister), four more packs of (still on sale!) buckwheat noodles, vacuum packed chestnuts (disaster to have bought a kilo fresh for Thanksgiving and then spending hours and hours peeling them and getting them painfully lodged under nail beds for days), air freshener oil in a bottle with wooden sticks to spread the smelly love, laundry detergent, and these rapidly disappearing oily fish with onions.

$$$ BE PREPARED $$$

Do you see where I’m going here? Yes, I can make a very excellent Japanese soup and some sides here.  I can make something Thai.  I can make my coconut ice cream.  I’ll have some strange condiments for the next few years.  But that’s not food for the week!?!  And I spent well over 250 shekels!  We’re talking $80+ here.  And what have I got? Soup and condiments…

And oily fish.  Yes, I have an interesting palate. I’m telling myself that my body desperately craved the natural and oh-so-fortifying oils inside of this fish, because I’m probably eating a triple serving here because everything else in the house has to be cooked…except for the cottage cheese and that’s for my sister.

Advice to you all – it doesn’t matter how badly you need your soy milk for the bran flakes tomorrow morning, or the special gluten-free hoisin for your special dinner tonight, or if you’re just dying for the vegan coconut milk cookie dough ice cream – NEVER go to the organic store hungry.

They don’t call it “Whole Paycheck” for nothing. And unfortunately for me, my organic grocer is literally around the corner.  I may need to find a better-paying job — because moving isn’t an option!

The past few weeks, I’ve considered upgrading this blog.  The motivation is simple: This is the second most popular Blog / Site I’ve ever made.  Instead of trying to replicate that success, I’ve decided to improve this blog instead.  One thing that I want to change, is the domain name.  Who in his right mind would look for IT tips on a site named “toretto84.wordpress.com”? Google does, but I sure wouldn’t. 

So, I’ve checked out the domain name upgrade (Don’t get me started on “hosting your own blog.  I tried, It doesn’t work for me.) and the price seems to be right.  15 dollars a year is less than I’d have to pay for a domain name if I register it myself.  What somewhat surprised me, though, is that WordPress.com only allows you to pay through Paypal. 

I don’t always read the fine print – my bad, I guess – so I assumed I could use my VISA.  Turns out I was wrong.  Luckily, it’s extremely easy to set up a Paypal account.  And, in these modern times, it’s a breeze to transfer money to your Paypal account, even without using a credit card.  All you do is transfer the amount you want, to Paypal’s Bank Account for your country, using the right reference and you’re set. 

Had I known that it was THAT easy, I’d have used Paypal before.  Unfortunately, Paypal isn’t very obvious about this option; which might scare some customers.

So, let me repeat that.  You don’t need a credit card to use Paypal.   This makes Paypal a very interesting tool for me.  No need to “link my Credit Card” to Paypal”? That’s excellent!

My point is: If you’re planning to upgrade your WordPress.com blog, register for a Paypal account.  It’s safe, and easy to use.  Even easier than I thought.

Go on, admit it.  If you’re a sluggo blogger like me trundling along with a few hundred hits a day, it’s fun to see your stats suddenly rocket skyward, if only for a little while.

The new front page at wordpress.com featured a photo from and link to a recent post about breaking my skates while playing hockey, and the view count went a bit nuts.

It lasted about 24 hours and brought in about three times as many visits this humble spot usually gets over a single day.  A few of the newcomers even left comments, which are always welcome.

What’s weird is, I’m not sure why the editors at WordPress.com picked that particular post.  Was it just dumb luck?  Nothing else better out there? Because I can point to dozens of others I’ve churned out over the last couple of years which are more deserving.   Better writing, punchier photos, more interesting content…to me, at least.    But they never made it to the front page.

I’m not complaining!  But if anyone at wordpress.com is reading this, can you let me know how you choose posts for your front page?  Does anyone else have a clue?

Partendo dal presupposto che globalmente la mia valutazione riguardo a wordpress.com deve senza dubbio essere buona avendo scelto di utilzzarla per l’apertura del mio blog, voglio provare a stilare una lista di pro e contro che tale sistema può avere in maniera che un utente non si trovi delle “sorprese” una volta aperto il blog.

PRO WordPress.com:

• SEMPLICITA’: wordpress.com mette a disposizione un servizio sfruttabile da qualunque utente, non è necessario avere competenze informatiche avanzate per poter aprire un blog con questo sistema. Tutte le funzioni sia di blog che di amministrazione sono intuitive e facile da trovare.
• STATISTICHE: all’interno dell’area di amministrazione un’intera sezione è dedicata alle statistiche. In tale sezione è possibile monitorare l’attività del blog in qualsiasi momento con grafici e tabelle giornaliere, mensili e annuali, dati relativi a ogni singolo articolo e calcoli riassuntivi con medie e totali periodici.
• REGISTRAZIONE: la registrazione di un nuovo blog non è semplice, di più. Bastano pochi passaggi per poter avere un blog personale. Inoltre i domini vengono registrati con tuonome.wordpress.com, indirizzo non troppo legante o imbarazzante, tutt’altro, ormai wordpress è sinonimo di affidabilità e serietà, per cui esibire tale nome nel proprio indirizzo diventa quasi un onore. Se non si desidera mantenere tale indirizzo, WordPress.com permette anche di esportare il blog in un dominio privato differente e senza obblighi nell’indirizzo.
• APPLICAZIONE TEMI: una volta deciso il proprio tema nella gamma proposta dal sito basta un clip per applicarlo, e tutto si aggiusta da solo. Tale cosa rende più semplice cambiare il tema nel caso si desideri farlo, senza aver paura di dover ristrutturare tutto il blog.
• MULTIMEDIALITA’: l’inserimento di elementi multimediali all’interno di un articolo è semplice ed intuitivo, la piattaforma permette di caricare molti tipi di file, dando quindi la possibilità a tutti gli utenti di perfezionare e completare i propri articoli accompagnandoli con video, immagini e musiche.
• LIVELLI UTENZA: wordpress.com mette a disposizione una buona quantità di livelli predefiniti, permettendo quindi una semplice gestione delle utenze nel caso il blog venisse gestito da un gruppo o da una società.
• COMMENTI: ogni articolo può essere caratterizzato da differenti politiche di commento e di replica, si possono impostare commenti liberi privi di moderazione a priori oppure permette l’inserimento di risposte solamente a un determinato gruppo di utenti, oppure sottoporre ogni commento prima a moderazione da parte dell’amministrazione e solo successivamente passare alla sua pubblicazione.
• MULTI-BLOG: nel caso si siano aperti più blog, o si appartenga a più gruppi che gestiscono un blog, è possibile gestire tutti i propri blog da un’unica interfaccia di amministrazione, senza dover effettuare login e logout da uno all’altro.

CONTRO WordPress.com:

• PAGINE: WordPress.com permette a creazione di pagine all’interno del blog, queste però non posso contenere un “blog”, ovvero, rimangono pagine statiche, esattamente come se contenessero un solo articolo: comodo nel caso si possegga un blog e si voglia avere pagine del tipo: about me, contact us o comunque di questo genere, ma non se ad esempio si voglia affrontare temi differenti in differenti pagine: ad esempio non è possibile creare una pagina dove si inseriscano articoli di carattere informatico e un’altra di carattere personale.
• REDIRECT: wordpress.com, per questioni di sicurezza, non permette l’inserimento di redirect all’interno di una pagina, non è quindi possibile creare una pagina che rimandi a un’altro sito, ad esempio una società che mantiene un blog su tale piattaforma non può creare una pagina che rinvii al suo sito.
• SCRIPTS: come si diceva prima, per questioni di sicurezza sono stati proibiti tutti i codici che non siano HTML puro, anche per i programmatori web non è quindi possibile applicare modifiche alla pagina che comprendano codici di script.
• CSS: le modifiche del CSS sono elencate nel menù di amministrazione, ma questa è una funzione attiva solo se si compra la versione a pagamento dello spazio di WordPress.com, non è quindi di base possibile applicare modifiche ai temi del blog e alla struttura dei div. Nel  caso si possegga la versione a pagamento è possibile mettere mano completamente al codice CSS oppure caricare un proprio file distinto.
• TEMI: anche il caricamento di temi nuovi non è possibile, le applicazioni scaricabili da internet che permettono la creazione di temi per questa piattaforma puntano alla modifica di temi che non si trovano sui server wordpress.com, ma su altri domini, dove è possibile compiere tale operazione. La scelta del tema va quindi ristretta ai pochi temi offerti dal sito. Se si desidera modificarlo l’unico modo è comprare un dominio esterno ed emigrare il blog sul nuovo dominio.

Come vedete i Pro sono più dei Contro, che inoltre interessano soprattutto questioni tecniche che possono interessare solamente i programmatori web, che sarebbero in grado di sopperire a tali difetti in altro modo. In generale quindi la mia valutazione della piattaforma è ottima, vi consiglio anche a voi di utilizzarla, specialmente se non avete determinati bisogni.

Assuming that overall my assessment about wordpress.com must surely be good if they opted to fullfilling the opening of my blog, I will try to get a list of pros and cons to this arrangement may be such that a user not find “surprises” after opening the blog.

PRO WordPress.com:

• SIMPLICITY ‘: wordpress.com provides a service exploitable by any user, do not need advanced computer skills to be able to open a blog with this system. All the features of blogs is that administration are intuitive and easy to find.
• STATISTICS: inside the administration an entire section dedicated to statistics. In this section you can monitor the activity of the blog at any time with graphs and tables daily, monthly and annual data for each individual article summaries and calculations with averages and totals periodicals.
• REGISTRATION: recording a new blog is not simple, more. With just a few steps in order to have a personal blog. Also domains are registered with tuonome.wordpress.com, address not bind or too embarrassing, quite the contrary, wordpress is now synonymous with reliability and professionalism, which show that name in its address becomes almost an honor. If you do not want to keep it there, WordPress.com also allows you to export your blog in a different and private domain in the address with no obligations.

CONS WordPress.com:

• PAGES: WordPress.com allows creation of pages within the blog, but these can not contain a “blog”, or remain static pages, exactly as if they contained only one item: handy if you possess a blog and you want have pages like: About Me, contact us or otherwise of this kind, but if for example you want to address different issues in different pages, eg you can not create a page where you enter articles on computer and another personal.
• Redirect: wordpress.com, for security reasons, does not allow the inclusion of redirects on a page, it means you can create a page that points to another site, such as a company that maintains a blog about this platform can not create a page that refers to his site.
• SCRIPTS: as we said before, for security reasons have been banned all codes that are not pure HTML, even for web programmers is therefore not possible to apply changes to the page that include script code.
• CSS: CSS changes are listed in the administration menu, but this is an active only if you buy the paid version of the area of WordPress.com is therefore not possible to apply changes to the basic themes of the blog and the structure of div. If you possess the paid version you can put your hand completely to CSS or upload their own separate file.

Nest etter Europa er det Latin-Amerika som importerer flest bortførte barn fra Norge. Bare i Brasil befinner det seg 5 bortførte norske barn, samt to barn i Mexico, ett i Argentina og ett i den Dominikanske republikk. Kvinnene i disse lavkostlandene nyter godt av den sterke norske bidragsvalutaen som Nav sender.

Drammenseren David Lindberg fikk sine to barn ble bortført første gang til Brasil i 2003.

Etter fire og et halvt år i Brasil valgte Davids ekskone å gifte seg på nytt med en nordmann og bosette seg i Trøndelag. Således fikk David gjenopprettet samvær med barna sine. Davids datter ønsket etter hvert å bo med sin far og gå 9. klasse i Drammen. Men Davids barn ble bortført på nytt sist sommer. Les mer i Drammens tiendene

Tommy Rune Bless fra Porsgrunn ble frarøvet sine to sønner i høstferien i 2006. Barnefaren har kjempet og presset på gjennom diplomati og domstoler, men så langt uten resultat. Les mer om saken i VG

I’m not sure if this going to go down in blogging history as a stroke of shear brilliance or a colossal screw up to which I’ll live every day regretting.  I noticed the other day that WordPress has a rating system than users can choose to turn on.  It let’s visitors give a anywhere from 1 to 5 five ranking on blog posts as well as giving a comment a score of thumbs up or thumbs down.

Pretty cool huh.

As soon as I noticed this fun little option I enabled the rating system right away.  But after a day of thinking about it I’m having second thoughts. 

This feature could lead to World War 3, 4, 5 and possible a World War 6 when it comes to my regular blog viewers.  primarily my mother in-law.  Don’t get me wrong my Mother in-law is pretty cool and takes A LOT of my shit but the evil she’ll unleash the second anyone gives one her comments a “thumbs down” will be on a biblical scale.  

My in-laws in general love to duke it out over anything there could possibly be to argue over.  This will just end up being one more battle field to go to war on.

I’ve got a feeling after I get the first “Who the hell gave my comment a thumbs down?” phone call I get from Paula my new rating systems will be getting disabled.  Because it’ll be one thing if my mother in-law calls me to complain but once I say “I don’t know who did it” her next step will be to contact WordPress and unleash her own brand of internet justice upon them.

So I’m begging you be kind on my post and comment ratings.  You might awaken the sleeping evil mother in-law Paula with a thumbs down and once she’s up she’ll need to feast on the blood of the innocent.  No, seriously.  She’s quite cranky when pissed.

Developing a quality blog is hard work for some and second nature to others. Yet most bloggers all have one thing in common. We want people to read our blogs. Wether you make money with your blog or have an ad-free WordPress.com blog like myself, it’s nice to know that someone out there is paying your blog some attention and even better if they end up giving it some tender “link” loving care.
