In common, less clinical usage, nostalgia can refer to a general interest in the past, their personalities, and events, especially the “good old days” from one’s earlier life. Boym[2] argues that nostalgia is more prevalent during times of great upheaval.

The scientific literature on nostalgia is quite thin, but a few studies have attempted to pin down the its essence and causes. Smell and touch are strong evokers of nostalgia due to the processing of these stimuli first passing through the amygdala, the emotional seat of the brain. These recollections of our past are usually important events, people we care about, and places where we have spent time. Music and weather can also be a strong trigger of nostalgia.

Further information: Homesickness

As a medical condition [edit]

The term was coined in 1688 by Johannes Hofer (1669–1752) in his Basel dissertation. Hofer introduced nostalgia or mal du pays ”homesickness” for the condition also known as mal du Suisse“Swiss illness” or Schweizerheimweh ”Swiss homesickness,” because of its frequent occurrence in Swiss mercenaries who in the plains of lowlands of France or Italy were pining for their native mountain landscapes. Symptoms were also thought to include fainting, high fever, indigestion, stomach pain, and death.

English homesickness is a loan translation of nostalgia. Sir Banks Joseph used the word in his journal during the first voyage of Captain Cook. On 3 September 1770 he stated that the sailors “were now pretty far gone with the longing for home which the Physicians have gone so far as to esteem a disease under the name of Nostalgia,” but his journal was not published in his lifetime (see Beaglehole, J. C. (ed.). The Endeavour Journal of Joseph Banks 1768-1771, Public Library of New South Wales/Angus and Robertson, Sydney, 1962, vol. ii, p. 145). Cases resulting in death were known and soldiers were sometimes successfully treated by being discharged and sent home. Receiving a diagnosis was, however, generally regarded as an insult. In 1787 Robert Hamilton (1749–1830) described a case of a soldier suffering from nostalgia, who received sensitive and successful treatment:

“In the year 1782, while I lay in barracks at Tin mouth in the north of England, a recruit who had lately joined the regiment,…was returned in sick list, with a message from his captain, requesting I would take him into the hospital. He had only been a few months a soldier; was young, handsome, and well-made for the service; but a melancholy hung over his countenance, and wanness preyed on his cheeks. He complained of a universal weakness, but no fixed pain; a noise in his ears, and giddiness of his head….As there were little obvious symptoms of fever, I did not well know what to make of the case…Some weeks passed with little alteration…excepting that he was evidently become more meager. He scarcely took any nourishment…became indolent…He was put on a course of strengthening medicines; wine was allowed him. All proved ineffectual. He had now been in the hospital three months, and was quite emaciated, and like one in the last stage of consumption… On making my morning visit, and inquiring, as usual, of his rest at the nurse, she happened to mention the strong notions he had got in his head, she said, of home, and of his friends. What he was able to speak was constantly on this topic. This I had never heard of before…He had talked in the same style, it seems, less or more, ever since he came into the hospital. I went immediately up to him, and introduced the subject; and from the alacrity with which he resumed it.. I found it a theme which much affected him. He asked me, with earnestness, if I would let him go home. I pointed out to him how unfit he was, from his weakness to undertake such a journey [he was a Welchman] till once he was better; but promised him, assuredly, without farther hesitation, that as soon as he was able he should have six weeks to go home. He revived at the very thought of it… His appetite soon mended; and I saw in less than a week, evident signs of recovery.”

In the eighteenth century, scientists were looking for a locus of nostalgia, a nostalgic bone. By the 1850s nostalgia was losing its status as a particular disease and coming to be seen rather as a symptom or stage of a pathological process. It was considered as a form of melancholia and a predisposing condition among suicides. Nostalgia was, however, still diagnosed among soldiers as late as the American Civil War.[3] By the 1870s interest in nostalgia as a medical category had all but vanished. Nostalgia was still being recognized in both the First and Second World Wars, especially by the American armed forces. Great lengths were taken to study and understand the condition to stem the tide of troops leaving the front in droves (see the BBC documentary Century of the Self).

One notable recent medical study has looked at the physiological affects thinking about past ‘good’ memories can have. They found that thinking about the past ‘fondly’ actually increased perceptions of warmth, meaning being nostalgic can make you actually feel warmer [4]

As a description [edit]

Nostalgia is triggered by something reminding an individual of an event or item from their past. The resulting emotion can vary from happiness to sorrow. The term of “feeling nostalgic” is more commonly used to describe pleasurable emotions associated with and/or a longing to go back to a particular period of time, although the former may also be true.

As a deception [edit]

One recent study critiques the idea of nostalgia, which in some forms can become a defense mechanism by which people avoid the historical facts. [5] This study looked at the different portrayals of apartheid in South Africa and argued that nostalgia appears as two ways,[2] ’restorative nostalgia’ a wish to return to that past, and ‘reflective nostalgia’ which is more critically aware.

Romanticism [edit]

Swiss nostalgia was linked to the singing of Kuhreihen, which were forbidden to Swiss mercenaries because they led to nostalgia to the point of desertion, illness or death. The 1767 Dictionnaire de Musique by Jean-Jacques Rousseauclaims that Swiss mercenaries were threatened with severe punishment to prevent them from singing their Swiss songs. It became somewhat of a topos in Romantic literature, and figures in the poem Der Schweizer by Achim von Arnim(1805) and in Clemens Brentano‘s Des Knaben Wunderhorn (1809) as well as in the opera Le Chalet by Adolphe Charles Adam (1834) which was performed for Queen Victoria under the title The Swiss Cottage. The Romantic connection of nostalgia, the Kuhreihen and the Swiss Alps was a significant factor in the enthusiasm for Switzerland, the development of early tourism in Switzerland and Alpinism that took hold of the European cultural elite in the 19th century. German Romanticism coined an opposite to Heimweh, Fernweh ”far-sickness,” “longing to be far away,” like wanderlust expressing the Romantic desire to travel and explore.

Well guess that did not help much now did it.

So a gift that is brownish, redish, orange in color that might cause symptoms thought to include fainting, high fever, indigestion, stomach pain, and death.

Well even though I pulled that from Wikipedia, does not mean that is what Michelle had in mind lol.

Let’s try again, shall we…Producing or expressing a mixture of pain and pleasure: a movie with a bittersweet ending. Something reminding an individual of an event or item from their past.

Perhaps this is how the game of gossip got it’s beginning.

A nice but painful gift that makes me homesick and reminds me of my past. That would have to be an old fashioned radio.

http://images.search.yahoo.com/images

I had one for years growing up since I did not have a television.
I can remember listening to the shadow knows and Dr. Who on the radio broadcast late at night when I could not sleep.

I could not take it with me when I had to move and it was always something I missed.

I did not miss the memories of that time in my life. Just the radio.

so that basically sums up my day! bought nat a dress for her bDAYski, never thought this day would come.. and that i would probs not go to her dinner LOL, but i might go to her house on saturday for her family party (bc im basically family anyways)

the weather was so nice today! it was such a perfect day! yay thank u mother nature lov u

“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life”

basically sums up how i feel about you yash. i love you!

okay so i actually studied, for like the first time in my life and i am proud of myself. like actually proud. im sitting here in such a happy mood! i love life right now why am i so happy.. normally im stressing over the stupidest things but right now i don’t think anything could bring me down

Me this morning in 5…4…3…2… This morning I woke with a start from my normal

Me this morning in 5…4…3…2…

This morning I woke with a start from my normal nightmaring, because I felt like something was wrong. I looked at my alarm clock and it said 4:42 am. I missed my alarm. That is why things felt so wrong. Adreneline kicked in and I rushed to take a quick shower and then promptly went back to my now shorter second nap before waking up officially. I then got dressed and left for work and here I am.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1583 " alt="How wants to fight? Ouch...hey...stop.. I meant for a cause alright? Ouch…hey…stop.. I meant for a cause alright? Geez!

The problem is, that feeling of wrongtivity never disappeared. When I started viewing my typical morning slate of skater accidents and bitter reactions to pranks on YouTube I figured out what my wrongness feeling was. As I and a few others know, there is not enough bitterness in the world. Sure, I do my part as the non official official spokebitter person for bitterness by posting things three or four times a week, but this morning I got the nagging feeling that I am not doing enough. What can I, as a lowly bitter blogger, with very little influence do to make a bitter difference? Then it dawned on me. You Tube. They are doing a week long You Tube comedy week. A whole week dedicated to all things funny. Then it started snowballing and I remembered other special weeks made official by Congress or something. Human Rights week. Constitution Week. If you haven’t figured out my logic yet, I will tell you. I have officially declared unofficially that this week is Worldwide Bitter Awareness Week(or WBAK for short) all across the world and on WordPress.

Bitterspirational thought for the day.

This is your chance to dull, people. Make a difference to your co-workers, family, friends and complete strangers. If you see it rain outside, tell someone how bitter that makes you(it is raining and it does make me bitter). If you had bad traffic on the way to work or school, make sure people around you know loudly as possible. Don’t keep this stuff inside. Let it out, make your bitterness known. I think it is fitting that Worldwide Bitter Awareness Week(WBAK) starts on a Tuesday, the bitterest day of all and will continue until Thursday. The committee chair(of a committe of one) has decided that we are just too lazy for a full week. Besides, it is just another reason for some people to be bitter. You can complain that the week is too short and you never really got your chance to properly celebrate.

Be creative. Make your normally cheery blog one of bitterness today. Here is my meager contribution. Fact: We have<del> five*</del> four different types of taste buds. Sweet, sour, salty, <del>umami*</del> and bitter. Of those taste buds, which do you use most? I bet you said either, sweet or salty as number 1, the vice versa as next, sour a solid third and somewhere in a distance last place, bitter. Try to name 5 foods off the top of your head that are bitter. You can’t do it right? How about sweet or salty, or even sour? Probably had no trouble there did you? Let’s bring awareness to lesser known bitter flavors this week.

In honor of Bitter Awareness Week, taste something bitter today. (Totally not photoshopped.)

How about bitter as a word? Everyone avoids it in comparison to its more well known brothers, better, butter, batter and botter. Even its weirdo cousin bytter gets more props than bitter. Time for that to change for this week at least. Maybe the continual use of bitter this week will spark something inside and people will use it next week too until gradually forgetting about it altogether. At least we have sparked a two week swing in bitter’s bitter existance.

I can’t cover all the bitter atrocities of being overlooked that bitter has had to deal with in this one post. Perhaps my readers can finally do something about it. List something you can be bitter about. Be creative, or even funny, as long as it has a bitter edge to it. Let’s do our part to make the world a bitter place. Then next week we can go back to our normal nightmares.

Arrrghhh

Bitterly Aware Ben

P.S. I looked up the type of tastebuds we have on Wikipedia and they listed a fifth type of taste bud called umami. What the freak is that? Apparantly it is savory like. Another taste bud leaps bitterness. You learn something bitter every day.

Courtesy: Shout! Factory/Hub

The latest release from the Hub network’s Pound Puppies series is just as fun as the previous pair of DVDs. This new release offers audiences five more episodes filled with entertainment and important lessons for both kids and their parents. Also included in this new collection of episodes is an adoption certificate that kids can print out and fill out for their very own. Just as impressive as the set’s episodes is the continued original artwork used throughout the series. Anyone that remembers Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, will recognize the animation used for this series once again. Altogether, these factors make Pound Puppies Mission: Adoption just as fun as the previous collections of episodes from this update of the classic 80s series.

This latest release is so much enjoyable first and foremost because of the mix of entertainment and life lessons in each of its five episodes. Of course the inclusion of some well-known voice actors doesn’t hurt, either. This time out, audiences learn that even the smallest dog…er…person can accomplish great feats. This lesson is taught in the episode, “Snow Problem.” When a young husky puppy named Tundra ends up with the Pound Puppies, he and the others take on a group of bigger, tougher dogs in a sled race that ends up with the young pup winning the heart of one of the racers and being adopted. The spoof of the famed song, ‘Chariots of Fire’ is a nice addition to this episode. Viewers also learn that superstitions are superstitions for a reason in “Taboo.” When they meet the puppy named Taboo, the Pound Puppies discover why it is that he’s had such a hard time finding his person. Viewers will have to find out the truth behind his adoption problems for themselves when they pick up this new release. Viewers will especially enjoy the Wizard of Oz reference in this episode. In the disc’s opener, “King of the Heap”, one of the Pound Puppies is adopted by Junkyard Jim, instead of the newest additions to the pound named Elvis (voiced by Clancy Brown—Mr. Krabs from Spongebob Squarepants). This episode teaches viewers that it’s best to be themselves, rather than something that they’re not. Being one’s own self is what people admire most. The show’s writers are to be commended for these lessons, and the others included here along with its more fun moments. On a side note, voice actor John DiMaggio is back again as the voice of Niblet. Considering that Futurama is coming to an end yet again, hopefully Hub will keep this show around as he does quite the job as Niblet’s voice.

The collection of fun moments and lessons culled for the episodes in this latest set make it fun for the whole family. Older audiences will appreciate this set for more than just those factors, though. They will also enjoy the animation style used throughout the series. It’s quite similar to Cartoon Network’s former cartoon, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. What makes this animation style so impressive is that even if it was done via computer, its quality is such that it’s difficult to tell if it was done by hand, by computer, or a combination of both. If it was done by both computer and by hand, then it proves that the two animation styles can exist side by side. And that both styles can exist side by side, one can only hope that audiences will get much more of this style of animation and mix of fun and lessons in even more volumes of Pound Puppies episodes. Pound Puppies Mission: Adoption is available now in stores and online. It can be purchased online direct via the Shout! Factory store at http://www.shoutfactory.com/?q=node/216951.

I never been one to write down my dreams but I do remember and recall them quite well. In one of these dreams I was writing a blog & it only took up a short amount of my time doing so. It helped me to flesh out the rest of my day & get my mind pumping & active!

I ate breakfast!!!
Because THAT doesn’t happen in my reality as much as I would like…

I started to workout more often…using this jump rope that it seems I bought & neglected. Push ups & light weight training…

This was a GRAND dream!!!!

…

Then I woke up…

And Ü know what one of my FIRST thoughts were this morning???

“I’m Hungry!!! But let me write this blog right quick….”
