I’ve only been blogging for a couple of months now. However I have noticed a few techniques that have helped me increase my blog viewership that could be useful to fellow new bloggers out there. Feel free to comment, add or dispute this list but so far, these are the top ten tips that have worked for me.

1) Write about interesting hard to find topics

Can you guess out of the following topics, which one is the most popular on my blog?

• Internet Marketing
• iPhone Development
• My Chevy Venture

If you guessed anything but number 3 you are wrong.  Does it surprise you that my Chevy Venture is the most popular topic?

People care more about good ole blue than my technical knowledge. Should I become a mechanic?

It doesn’t surprise me since I wrote an answers in an article on a topic I found extremely difficult to find myself. If you experience a tough time finding the information you need on a topic, most likely others are having the same issues.  Therefore, once you find your answer, take the time to share your new found knowledge on your blog.

2) Place comments on blogs of similar interests

If you want people to read your blog and comment on it then you should be willing to invest the time to read other people’s blogs and to offer feedback.  Remember Luke 6:31 in the Bible? Also when placing your comment add a link to your blog at the bottom so people can see who the coll guy was who left those amazing comments.

3) Add tags to your posts

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve talked to who complain about not receiving visitors to their sites and/or blogs who just don’t understand the value of site keywords and tags.  Without tags, how will people and search engines know what your posting is about? Check out ours on the right had side under “What we blog about”. You MUST add relevant tags to your posting you won’t be wasting your time with an article that no one will read.

4) Watch blog stats daily and add follow-up posts to popular topics

As I mentioned in tip #1, my Chevy Venture article is the most popular one on my blog so far.  However I wouldn’t have known that without watching my blog stats like a hawk daily to see what people were interested in.  This blog is on WordPress.com so it comes with a dashboard including Blog Stats. However, if yours doesn’t, you should definitely add Google Analytics to your site and blog.  Then be sure to check it daily to identify trends that you can react to.

5) Check your ping/track backs and add the sites to your blogroll

If I see a strong comment or a track/ping back from a daily/weekly blog, I take the time to add them to my blog roll or reference links. I do this as a courtesy for people who take the time to read my content.  If you do this you probably can expect more people to link to and comment on your posting thereby increasing traffic.

6) Add your blog to your and your friends other sites

Have you noticed the trend now where sites that are part of sister companies are now displaying links to all of their entities at the top? Just visit the Wall Street Journal or GAP and look at the links to all their affiliated companies in banner format at the top.  Your blog should be included on all your web sites and network web sites if possible. Also include a link to their sites on your blog.

7) Reference your blog in your social media outlets

Are you on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, StumbleUpon, Digg, RSS Feed…the list goes on and on. Well if you aren’t some of your friends probably are. Have them post updates when you add blog postings to drive traffic there. Also make sure that you add a button on your postings that allow people to send your article easily through social media.

Add images, polls, and other interactive content

Yes people care about information but they also want to be entertained. Take time to make your blog interactive and exciting by adding images, polls, videos, etc that support what you are blogging on. Take the time to add a cool template and color to the site so it is more appealing to the eye.  People will stay longer and send your cool site to their friends.

9) Blog about blogging

There are thousands upon thousands of bloggers out there who are just getting started or looking for ways to improve their viewership. Why not address these people and offer tips based on your blogging experiences. Share your successes and failures and people will appreciate you for it.

10) Don’t forget to add the gravy

One thing that really irks me is to search all day for a topic, finally find someone who has the information I need and then realize that they only provided partial information. Imagine if I had written this top ten list without the explanation of each item. Wow…wouldn’t you be upset?

By following the tips and techniques mentioned above I have seen a steady increase in my blog traffic. Check the graph below.

I’m still relatively new to blogging so I expect to see large increases as my writing skills get better and I prefect the above tips. Let me know what you think and what works or doesn’t work for you.

So, here’s an experiment: blogging from an iPhone. This WordPress app is pretty cool but I don’t think I’m able to do full function bulleted lists, block-quotes or use bold, so I’ll come back and edit this post later to put some of extras in (I know you all love ‘em). Friday saw another big day in the office and three-and-a-half hour meeting to close off the working week, just what I needed. Now, I have just two days left before breaking up for the holidays but my to-do-list remains huuuuge! Not to worry, it was ever thus. During the duller parts of the conference call, I was keeping an eye on the cricket and the remarkable fightback instigated by Graeme Swann, whored a career best 85 to keep England in contention. (It’s all gone a bit wrong since then but I shan’t mention that till tomorrow). Friday night’s are probably the main tell-tale sign about the onset of middle age, it used to be that this was the moment during the week that you put on your best shirt, tidied your hair and headed out in town to meet your mates and drink till the early hours. These days, it’s feet up in front of the telly and a glass of wine if you’re lucky. Hang on… Did I say the same thing last week? Memory’s the other thing that goes, ya know.

This Christmas is going to be very different. Already I don’t feel much of the Christmas spirit around here. And even though I complain about spending wayyyyyy too much money during Christmas, I have to say that I absolutely miss it!

I miss:

1) Having a beautiful white Christmas. I still shudder at the snow horrors I encountered last year, but Christmas just isn’t complete without snow.

2) Excellent home-cooked turkey dinners. ‘Nuf said.

3) Shopping for gifts. TRUE, they burn many holes in my pocket. And TRUE, it gets frustrating when you have abso-freaking-lutely no idea what to buy.

But I just LOVE shopping during Christmas. I LOVE carrying 500 shopping bags and not stand out because everyone else is carrying more shopping bags than me! Everyone is especially warm, unusually friendly and extra giving. It is only during Christmas season that bank tellers will waive a transaction fee for no reason at all, the only time when cashiers will take a few cents from their tip jar to pay for your cup of eggnog latte because you don’t have enough change, and probably the only time when every single person (strangers included) begin or ends the conversation with a hearty “Merry Christmas!”, and amazingly, even the foulest mood can not hold you back from willingly returning a “Merry Christmas to you too!” (What can I say? The Christmas spirit is contagious!)

4) Wrapping presents. I really do. One year I tricked my (then nine year old or so) cousin, Lucas, into thinking we got him clothes for Christmas by wrapping his present in a big, empty box filled with newspaper. He wasn’t very enthusiastic about our present at first but it was great to see that beaming face when he opened the present and liked what he saw. (It was a video game. Boys.) Another year he loved his present so much (it was really clothes, a basketball jersey actually), that he gave both my sister and I each a kiss on the cheek!

5) And finally, I just miss the whole Christmas spirit. The concept of Christmas here just ain’t quite the same. Sure, the malls are extravagantly decorated with Christmas decorations and Christmas songs are playing everywhere. (I went for a facial the other day, and they kept playing the same three Christmas songs over and over again for the whole two hours I was there. It was really annoying, especially when I was trying to relax while waiting 30 minutes for my mask to absorb.)

It’s just different here. It’s not Christmas season – quality time spent with family and friends. But it’s Christmas season – a long weekend, making plans to go out for Christmas dinners (that cost about RM98++ to RM200++ per person), clubbing, partying, counting down.

Somehow, the whole interpretation of Christmas is different. In Western cultures, Christmas is more traditional and would probably be what Chinese New Year is to us, Chinese-Malaysians. Which is, a festive season spent with family and friends, lots of good food and fun-filled traditions: angpao (red packet = $$$), praying if applicable, CNY eve dinner, Jolly Shandy, mahjong and Big2. So, having said that, I am really looking forward to Chinese New Year.

But for now, to make up for the lack of Christmas spirit around here, I am spicing it up with the greeting below. (On a side note, with so much extra time on my hands, I think I am really becoming addicted to Photoshop. I know, I’m such a geek sometimes.)

Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson praised provisions in an abortion compromise adding new teen pregnancy initiatives and tax credits for adoption, while saying that the language working to ban public funding of abortion is not sufficient at this point.

Senator Nelson said a proposed compromise he’s studied does not yet ensure that a longstanding federal standard barring public funding of abortion would be maintained in the Senate health care bill the Senate has been debating this month.

Nelson said without further improvements the compromise is not sufficient.

Reading the forums and learning from inputs in the WordPress forums, I had found out some shortcomings on many wordpress.com blogs. If your blog is with free wordpress.com, do not commit the following errors/blogging mistakes.

1. Do not give more than 10-12 tags and/or categories to a post

‘The more the tags to a wordpress blog post, the better for inviting traffic’ is what most wordpress bloggers think. A lot of tags may be an advantage on the WordPress.org blog (like this one) but on free WordPress you should limit the number of tags and categories to a post (put together) to 10-12 (e.g.: 10 tags, 2 categories to one blog post, or 4 categories and 8 tags to a post). This is the official WordPress rule. This was done to prevent tag spamming. Remember 12 is the number; do not exceed the limit or your blog will not appear in the WP global tags page! The written rule says 5 to 10 tags/categories but staff in the WP forum has admitted the limit is 12 (and I have read it elsewhere too on the support page but couldn’t find the link). So adhere to the tag limits to get the juice from the global tags page of wordpress.com. Please note that this is not applicable for self-hosted wordpress.org blogs and you should use tags to your full advantage without worrying about tag spamming.

2. Let WP automatically correct invalidly nested XHTML

Go to dashboard>Setting>Writing Settings and check the option that says WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically. WordPress will now automatically attempt to correct your html errors (this option is also there in self-hosted wordpress.org blogs). You should ignore this option only if you are comfortable with HTML, the language in which web pages are written. Also you can use the Markup Validation Service to find the errors on your site. This blog has many errors but I really don’t have the time to research, learn and fix them. Believe it or not, even the official Google blog had 412 errors and 139 warnings as on June14, 2009 LOL!

Some other wordpress.com tips

1. Disable mShots (the screenshot, Media Shots, that shows when you hover a link) from dashboard>Extras. It is an irritant because it is slow and also fetches an old cache. But the choice is yours as many like it!
2. Hide the display of related links on your blog from dashboard>extras and other wordpress blog posts will not get a mention below your posts and you will not get mentioned anywhere in the WordPress.com blogosphere. Though It is more democratic and nice if you leave it on.
3. Surf and be active on the WordPress.com forums for gaining more knowledge and insight.
4. Increase the size of the writing box to 20 or 25 lines from Writing settings.
5. Follow the official wordpress blog for latest updates and features, announcements, contests and developments. Do not hesitate to leave a comment there to gain some traffic!
6. Use Windows Live Writer for blogging.
7. From dashboard>tools, use the option to verify your blog with Google Webmaster tools and you will get a lot of data about blog. You can also verify your blog with Yahoo and Bing.

One set of Nigerians are obscenely pessimistic about Nigeria and Nigerians. They do not believe anything positive can come out of their country. To those who hold such views, they live with it and bear the consequence of missed opportunities.

Its even worse when you find others pronouncing judgement just by reading one side of a story. Who themselves have to clue as to how things run, yet are only too eager to make generalized statements, spiced with personal insults.

I’m enjoying David’s definant attitude, anyway. Its the kind you get from people who have done bad things over and over again until they conclude themselves to be superstars – like the agberos in Lagos who tell you they own the street.

It not perhaps, David’s first time to have his customers make a complaint about the services he claims to provide, and he’ll push them aside to the ‘noise makers’ corner. Feeling all confident about himself, his clients leave in anger, move on and decide to count their losses instead, leaving David to enrich himself. Little drops of water make a mighty ocean.

I also stumbled across Mr. U. Chukwudi’s weblog, and a post where he commended Web4Africa on their “good service”. With one man’s meat is another man’s poison, I narrated my ordeal with Web4Africa. While, Mr. Chukwudi offered a word of advice, especially with W.Live writer, this is what David Ajao had to say about my comments:

Talking about Malice:

• I would like to ask David what context his “not providing me a service which I paid for” should be taken? and why hasnt he given me a refund since my ‘complaining’.
• or sounds more like a Mathematical problem: A paid B for a service. B did not provide the service. A asked for a refund. B did not give the refund. What should A do?

Anyway, everyday is for the thief and one day for the owner, right. By the time this is all over, maybe it’ll make a good case study.

3) so in your company, when you fail to deliver and a client starts complaining, you then push that customer into the Malicious department?

I’m wondering David, don’t you expect me to make a complaint? See, if I were providing you a service which you werent happy with, wont you complain? I decided to make my complaints public because all our private discussions were not getting anywhere.

And why havent you given me a refund, when you have clearly defaulted on your own agreement to provide a service? There are over 30 e-mails in your mailbox from me on the same issue for 1-whole year.

Todays date is 19Dec2009, and yet you have the audacity to call me Malicious? You dont even offer any word of apology or any positive action to make things work out, and yet you run your mouth against me. I thought you should have a customer service department which could have called “the customer” and tried to work things out?

Mind you, its people like you that give Nigeria a bad name? Its people like you that need to be seriously rebranded. Its people like you that make the words “enterpreneur + Nigeria” a poison, and thus destroy the reputation of the entire Nigerian population.

Please dont ever think you can dupe me and get away with it.

thanks for trying to help. You made a comment on my wordpress blog on Nov30, 2009. Whether or not your comments will fix the problem is not the issue, and please, No, there is no Malice in my comments about David and his company.

I feel sad, I feel I have been scammed, with my eyes wide open, worse, in 2009 – and thats by someone who sits in Ghana and calls himself a Nigerian enterpreneur.

If David is sure I’m lying, let him publish my complaints or call his lawyer against me. He knows my phone number, I believe.

See, I paid for a service in Jan2009. I have sent several emails to David and his staff since then. Nothing was done to resolve the issue. Not one phonecall from Web4Africa, not one apology. Not one technical move to resolve the issue. I moved elsewhere and and have been asking for a refund since June2009. The refund hasnt been forth-coming either.

What do you expect me to do? keep quiet? He didnt provide the service and he wont give me a refund? I dont call this a HUGE MESSY MISUNDERSTANDING, its called an INTENTION TO DEFRAUD.

You know what, I had enquired about reseller hosting from him, and was really interested to make payment. I decided to pull my breaks and see how hosting one site with him goes, before I make a final decision on the big picture. What if I had make payment for reseller hosting and this same thing happens, he wont give me a refund as well, and he would say im Malicious.

Pre-requisite:

1.bbpress

2.bbIntegration plugin for WordPress.

3.WAMP or XAMPP Server to be installed.

Note:WordPress should be already installed and running.

Here is the steps to integrate bbpress with the existing wordpress.

Step 1:
Download the bbpress Package.

Step 2:
Unzip the downloaded package to the WordPress root directory.

If the Server,your using is XAMPP then,

C:\Xampp\htdocs\wordpress

Copy the unzip bbpress package in to the wordpress directory

Step 3:
Start the Xampp Server.

To check the xampp Server is Running.

Open the browser and hit the Url.

You should see the Xampp Server Configuration Page.

Note:But the remember the database name of your WordPress what ever you have created before.

Step 4:
Now,open the browser hit the url like

http:\\localhost\(name of the wordpress package)/(name of the bbpress directory that has been copied to the wordpress folder in xampp)

You should see the bbpress Configuration Page.

Step 5:
It will ask you some Information for creating bbpress config file.

Database name:Its the name of the database you have created in phpmyadmin in XAMPP for wordpress before.

Database Username:The default username for XAMPP is “root”

Database password:The default password for XAMPP is “”.

Database Host:The host is nothing but “localhost”.

Step 6:
After all this , click on ‘Worpdress Integration’.

In the wordpress integration page, click on the below check boxes and fill required field’s

WordPress address (URL):Your Blog URL

Blog address (URL):Your Blog URL

WordPress “auth” cookie key:This value must match the value of the constant named “AUTH_KEY” in your WordPress wp-config.php file.

WordPress “auth” cookie salt:This must match the value of the WordPress setting named “auth_salt” in your WordPress site. Look for the option labeled “auth_salt” in this WordPress admin page.

WordPress “secure auth” cookie key:This value must match the value of the constant named “SECURE_AUTH_KEY” in your WordPress wp-config.php file.

WordPress “secure auth” cookie salt:This must match the value of the WordPress setting named “secure_auth_salt” in your WordPress site. Look for the option labeled “secure_auth_salt” in this WordPress admin page.

WordPress “logged in” cookie key:This value must match the value of the constant named “LOGGED_IN_KEY” in your WordPress wp-config.php file.

WordPress “logged in” cookie salt:This must match the value of the WordPress setting named “logged_in_salt” in your WordPress site. Look for the option labeled “logged_in_salt” in this WordPress admin page.

Check the third Check box and below it will ask some database information.

User database table prefix:wp_

WordPress MU primary blog ID:If you are integrating with a WordPress MU site you need to specify the primary blog ID for that site. It is usually 1. You should probably leave this blank if you are integrating with a standard WordPress site

Make sure the Show advanced database settings check box is checked.

User database name:Database name of the WordPress is installed.

User database user:root(Default username)

User database password:”"(blank by default)

User database host:localhost

User database character set:UTF8

User database character collation:utf8_general_ci

Leave the custom user table blank.

Click the Save WordPress Settings.

Then ,it will ask you for Site Settings

Site name:Enter any name you wish.

Site address (URL):It will have your forum url.

“Key Master” Username:The Username will be in drop down box.You can select your Key Master username.

First forum name:The First Topic name.

Then Click on Save Site Settings.

Step 7:
After all this,you are set with the bbpress.

You will see a Username is admin and the password will be the existing one you are using for your WordPress.

Once you see your Dashboard.

Click on WordPress Integration in the Setting on the left hand side.

WordPress Administrator:bbpress-keymaster

WordPress Editor:bbpress-Moderator

WordPress Author:bbpress-member

WordPress Contributor:bbpress-member

WordPress Subcriber:bbpress-member

Click on Save Changes.

Step 8:
Go to the Dashboard Of wordpress.

Before that make sure the bbpress integration plugin is copied in to the plugins folder of the wp-content in wordpress.

And make sure the plugin is activated in the Plugins ‘Installed’ Menu in the wordpress Dashboard.

Now, in the Settings you will find the bbpress Integration will be listed over there.

Click on it.

And make sure that

bbPress URL:Url of your bbpress(like http://localhost/wordpress/bbpress)

Your plugins URL:Leave it blank.

WordPress type:Select the WordPress Type you have.

Click on Save Settings.

Thats it.

To check that its working fine or not.

Start signing in your blog alone.

And then go to your forum url and see.

It will find the role of you and signed in automatically.

Just found out about the email blogging features in wordpress. This is the first post I’m making via email. My only beef is that the email address is an assortment of randomly generated characters and you can’t actually specify the email address you like. So, your blog may have an email address like xyzblah23 (no you can’t choose blah!).

On the plus side, it has (or is supposed to, I can’t tell since this IS my first post!) full support for emails sent in HTML format. You can insert images in your email and they’ll show up on your post. It also supports tags, categories and other features which can be specified in square brackets [].

I don’t often comment on news stories on this blog. Hardly ever, really. But yesterday I came across the news flash story that in CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee, a four-year-old boy, beer in hand, was accused of stealing Christmas presents from his neighbors. It’s a strange story, but also a sad one. 

The article, and if you want to read it, just click here, went on to say that this “innocent” little tyke was just trying to emulate his father when he broke into his neighbors house, stole Christmas presents from under the tree, and was found at 1:45 a.m., dressed in a stolen girl’s dress with an open, half drank, 12 ounce beer in his hand, standing on a street corner.

Four years old.

Look at this kid. How? How does this sweet, small face get put with this kind of criminal activity?

Apparently, his mommy (and I use that term extremely loosely) explained that, while the incident was scary to her and caused her great trepidation when she “discovered” he was missing, worrying her to death he might be abducted and/or murdered or run over or something, she felt his behavior was still ”understandable.”

He wanted to be like his daddy - do some bad things so he could get caught and go to jail and be with his dad.

Mom was quoted as apologizing for her son’s actions, citing the motive I just mentioned, but admitted she was “not embarrassed.” 

“Kids do things like this and it’s out of your control, you can do the best you can as a mother, everyone makes mistakes, it was an honest mistake,” she said.

Now, mine is not to judge. I’m nowhere near perfect, never have been, try to be, but fail all the time. So I’ll not blog here about what a pathetic example of parenting this is, even though it is and I just showed how imperfect I am by contradicting myself within one paragraph. Sorry, had to let that slip. But the point is -

People – if we want this future generation to grow up to be good, honest, caring-for-and-thinking-about-others-first-with-their-actions, and sensible, responsible citizens, then we have to start – check that – we have to return to, being …

And that starts by leading by example. Actions speak louder than words, louder than screaming and ranting at your kids, volumes more than endless and meaningless “time-outs,” and your kids are watching you to see what they should be like when they grow up. This poor little kid wants the companionship of his father and apparently will do anything to be like him and be able t0 be with him. How nice, and how typical. Kids are like that.

Too bad there are so many parents who are not living examples of what they want their children to grow up to be, hmm?

Okay, the Old Silly is stepping down off his soap box now. Thanks for letting me rant, I feel much better now. And please join me in prayer for the future of that little boy. His mother was allowed to keep custody of him. Pray for her, too.
