I am a born again software addict. My rebound from terminal software nutcase to sane user has been

I am a born again software addict. My rebound from terminal software nutcase to sane user has been excruciating. The phenomenal obsession with shareware, trial ware, demo ware and freeware has since been toned down to occasional browsing for useful freeware. However, I have been able to compile a list of excellent applications while walking the wild side of cyberspace. Like a fairy tale dungeon dragon I have been guarding it all these years but I realize now that it has been damn tiresome and pretty stupid of me. So I have decided to bare it all – A Double Cheese Burger + Triple Sundae + Pepsi software combo pack of applications, mostly freeware and a few pay ware.

I haven’t written even one line of code in any of the applications listed. True to the spirit of every self respecting end user license agreement, I take no responsibility what so ever in case any of the applications featured here threaten you, your family, pets, neighbours, the planet, universe et al with eternal damnation and perdition.

Dedicated to selfless open source and freeware developers whose unflinching madness has yielded some of the best software’s mankind has ever known.

P.S:- The software’s listed are only for the Windows platform. Linux, BeOS, Mac OS, Other OS users – please excuse me. Power users, this list is not meant for you. I’m sure you have got them all and more.

My long overdue reflections. Why come so suddenly. Our post-expedition finally ended a couple of weeks ago. Offically, YEP Hope has finally ended, although there’s still that nightmare-video yet to be completed. Also a couple of weeks ago, I got a phonecall, asking if I would like to join another YEP trip to Shanghai, in time for the expo, next year. My journaling throughout the YEP trip was done in this manner, although done manually, which would certainly be much easier. I read it once through, and wrote this.

Whilst there’s a plethora of dictionaries available online, software can still surpass them in

Whilst there’s a plethora of dictionaries available online, software can still surpass them in terms of ease-of-use and the speed of access. WordWeb is a smashing little application which combines a dictionary, thesaurus, and more into one small application. It’s almost always faster than using a dictionary website, and includes additional functions which you’re not likely to find elsewhere.

WordWeb provides a plethora of features which make reference tasks simple

During or just after the installation, you may be struck by something a bit queer. The license agreement includes a clause which states that you can use the software provided you don’t make more than four flights in a 12-month period. Obviously this is the developer’s way of trying to reduce carbon emissions and therefore save the poor little polar bears from supposed impending doom. I don’t take flights, and therefore am free to use this software as much as I like. It’s also quite quaint that you receive a message after a year asking you how many flights you’ve taken – it won’t let you continue to use it if you answer more than four, and will perhaps lecture you about how you’re murdering the environment.

Attempted diktats about how you travel aside, the software is useful and zippy. It loads very quickly and it’s easy to get started by searching a word in the text field. WordWeb will then quickly do some soul-searching to find the word you’re looking for and provide definitions. Below this are a few tabs which offer different features. The first of these is ‘Nearest’, which will take you to a list of words which are above and below it alphabetically, clicking one of these will take you to its definition. Whilst this isn’t as obviously useful, it’s handy if you’re using alliteration in puns, or you just want to kill some time. ‘Synonyms’ is the second tab, and this lists words which mean the same thing. I’d like to see that improved, since there weren’t many suggested synonyms for each word. Thirdly we have the ‘Antonyms’ tab, which presents words which mean the opposite of the word you’ve looked up – just in case you’re feeling fickle.

There’s also the ability to carry over information from the Internet. After clicking ‘Web References’ you’ll be asked to confirm that you’re willing to download content from the Web. After this initial shuffling about, you additional features will be added: a Wikipedia article panel for the word, a Wictionary panel, and a WordWeb online panel. These all add additional information which can be useful to your in your research.

I think my only suggestion for improvement would be the ability to have different tabs for different words. This would help with multitasking or when checking the finer points of the definitions when choosing between two similar words. WordWeb can be downloaded from http://wordweb.info/free/ or download.com.

Do you need to create an infinite number of unique articles quickly? Are you one of those people tha

Do you need to create an infinite number of unique articles quickly? Are you one of those people that spend hours researching, writing, and publishing online articles for various blogs and websites? Don´t you wish you had a little helper that could halve your workload? Well then article creation software is exactly what you’re looking for – a dream come true!

Instead of spending hours developing articulate and original content, Article Creation Software can ´incredibly´ generate a unique article for you in just a few minutes. Article creation scripts and software are the ultimate in article marketing tools and with automatic content technology you don’t need to be a professional editor to reap the benefits and attract more traffic – some of the better programs on the market include:

* Magic Article Rewriter

* Power Article Rewriter

* Wordflood 2.0

* Website Content Wizard

Article Creation Software uses in built programming and web based search capabilities to rapidly and systematically search and compile lists of synonyms and occasionally stand-alone sentences. The application does this by using a search query to determine the most applicable (keyword or key phrase) you’ve just inserted. The software will then instinctively classify and organise the entire compiled data into subgroups or subtopics. Now follows the best part – all you have to do is decide which synonyms you want from a generated list to fabricate fresh and unique articles. Article Creation Software thus affords the user several clear-cut advantages such as:

* Enabling you to produce content that you can then submit to free article directories, thus drawing hundreds of back links to your sites.

* Makes it possible for you to create unique content for fresh internet sites, Web Pages, and Blogs a great deal quicker.

* Picking up more inbound traffic – a great deal faster.

* Promotes and keeps the attention of your visitors and search engines alike.

* Become an expert writer about any field of study surprisingly quick.

Although there are many potent features inherent in Article Creation Software, rewriting an existing article has always been a gray area. Articles can occasionally be of mediocre quality without any zest or feeling obvious in the work of a human operator. Ultimately, there’s more effective software packages available, software that can produce the most inventive, unique and accurate articles without impairment and encroaching upon copyright laws. Can you guess what it could be?

Yes, it´s your mind!

Do you realise, the capacity of the human mind is more powerful than the total sum of all the computers ever built. While even the greatest, herculean computers nowadays are roughly 10,000,000,000,000 bytes (10 to the power of 12), the individual mind is capable of a colossal ten followed by eight,432 noughts. Now that´s powerful stuff!

There’s no software that can cope with the ability of your mind. Nevertheless, there are a few software programs that can assist you to produce better content. One tiny, neat, free program is Wordweb. Modelled on the same principles as Princetons WordNet project, it has a large compendium of 15000 root words and 120000 synonyms. Wordweb sits inconspicuously in your system tray ready for use at your whim. Whenever you want to know the meaning of a word or its applicable synonym; simply highlight the word and press Ctl + right click and voila a little windowpane pops up with a listing of words.

Another groovy program used by many editors and writers is Stylewriter - the plain English editor. Although it´s cost ($160) can be inhibitive to some, it is worth the investment for the professional writer who wants to produce professionally edited documents and improve their writing style. However, don´t expect it to correct punctuations or some of the more complicated grammar mistakes that your word-processor doesn’t pick up – use your brain.

Despite these limits, Article Creation Software is fast becoming popular with internet marketers and content creators all over the world as a handy tool to use with their existing content creation strategies. It’s now their first choice, even before keyword research tools, to research articles, submit them to article directories, earn revenue online, and reduce your research time and effort many times over. So if you´re looking for a neat little piece of software to create quick and easy articles then Article Creation Software is the way to go.

However, you have to be cautious, as there are dozens of article rendering tools available that simply reproduce trash and produce duplications. If you want to create high calibre articles with your own voice, then your mind is always the most powerful software that you can use.

You make the choice!

The year has come and gone, 2009 is on a stampede to get here. Most blogs are littered with posts of reminiscing, regrets, thougths, and goals for 2009.

3. TinyUrls

Its a web service that provies short links to rediret LONG URLs. It’s really nifty when sharing links on twitter or via email and prevents link breaks

I found this Dictionary cum thesaurus cum pronunciation guide called Wordweb around 6 months back, and have been using this to find quick meaning or pronunciations of weird words.

It has 2 versions, free and pro.Free versions has some limitations, of course!

You can search for words like p?d and it will return results like pad, pod. Now isn’t that handy while solving a crossword?

The pro version also has an anagram solver; but all these are not the reasons I blogged about it.

Today, I got a window alert saying that free trial has ended and I have to answer a question to continue.
Then I was presented with a question asking me how often I fly. I was dumbfounded ! Why would it want to know this? I honestly answered that I have never flown.

And then, it allowed me to use wordweb till I fly not more than 2 flights an year. Lol, what a way to decide that I can’t afford nor care to buy a pro version. Clever thinking Indeed. I had the screen shot, and unfortunately pressed the print screen again before saving it.

If any of you do download and use that utility, and encounter this funny situation in the future. Please send me a screenshot.

Signing off,

I stumbled across a blog the other day that had suggestions of books for learning Japanese. Unfortunately I can’t find the blog again – like I said, I stumbled across it. Anyway, the author mentioned that one way to know if a dictionary is any good is to see if it contains a unusal or infrquently used word. He said his favourite word to use for this task was “defenestrate”.

I’d never heard of it before so looked up and low and behold it is a genuine word. Below is the definition given by a fantastic little app called “WordWeb“:

Verb: defenestrate dee’feni’streyt
1. Throw through or out of the window
“The rebels stormed the palace and defenestrated the President”

Since this seems to be my day for it, I’ll keep on with the freeware theme. I already have at least one more item in mind. WordWeb is an excellent utility with a very small RAM footprint. It’s a dictionary that rides in your launch tray. In combination with Answer.com’s answer bar, you have a lot of the questions covered; couple that with Google and you’ve got quite a wide reach. (WordWeb defaults to a web search on words when its internal store of words runs out, as its name implies.)

I actually paid for the pro version of WordWeb almost immediately. Keep your download link. You might even consider putting it into a specially named file or document. Basically the important thing is the license number, though.

AUTHOR:FRUITYMIND

I remember vividly the subject Business Ethics we had in third semester and how proudly our course director announced- this is a relatively new subject and not even IIM-Ahmedabad has teachers or relevant books for it. I passed the discipline with a GPA of 9 courtesy all the search I did on internet to read theories related to ethical decision making. But even standing at that surprising GPA I bear no capability to define Ethics per se.

I read Indian news stories daily, I see global news daily, I use endorsed brand daily, I make an environmental related decision daily- and they are all related to ethics. My wordweb dictionary defines ethics as ‘A system of principles governing morality and acceptable conduct’. But who is to explain the context of acceptable. It’s a fancy word some philosopher used to veil his inability to measure anything that is pure right or wrong- anything that is pure black or white. It’s just a picayune excuse some genius picked up to write heaps of circumlocutious non meaning theories to hide the evil sides- the grey sides.

The topic of this post is -What is ethic: to you, me or them? When I see a poor kid in CRY print advertisement I resolve to adopt a child but never do it in reality…but when I do see a kid enjoying Baskin Robbins ice cream I nag my partner to go to parlour and take one bite. Am I ethical?

When I see my fellow friends being conscious and aware enough to dedicate a post on youth Unite about Bhookh and add a badge on their WordPress blogs…I aimlessly click on the feedthemouthxxxxxerrttsomethingsomething.com site in hope to feed the hungry……but when I don’t like the taste of a dish I vainly leave the whole dish go in trash cans with a certain arrogance. Am I ethical?

I see a movie daily- that’s my routine and a way to rewind after sitting in the comforts of my workstation and sipping endless mochachinno’s and tapping laptop glaring into the matte finished screen. I see the imaginative world of songs and dance routine- criticize them and then compare with better quality English movies safely ignorant of the situations in Somalia/Myanmar/China/India. Am I ethical?

I read about rising rates of rapes and take out my angst onto wordpress by writing a post. I read about deplorable conditions of elderly and take out my angst onto wordpress by writing another post. I read about Aarushi and her ill fated media tryst and take out my angst onto wordpress by writing yet another post. I sit conveniently in the calm comforts of my electrically heated bed and write about people I can’t help. I talk about rapes- but have I researched what’s actually happening to women in Gulf countries or Asia? I talk about elderly not doing a thing for my own mother who is alone in India. I talk about Aarushi and let some perverse people find a way to write their even more perverse ideas about horrible things and do not even attempt to moderate them in honor of Freedom of Expression. Am I ethical?

I see a larger than life Shahrukh talk superfluously claiming that how his son was upset when he couldn’t see a match and how he bought a whole cricket team for him to relish! Now you people – who treat him ahead of god can be kind enough to tell me a single just a meagre quote from this man about his daughter? Wait he has a daughter- oh yes he does…But does he ever talks about her? No…never. Way to go King Khan our Indian hero- you’re perfect ambassador to support Female Foeticide cases in Harayana or Punjab. Wait a minute- but you need to charge a crore for that..no you can’t do that..but shell out a few crores more and you can prance around in your underwear in a glitzy Page 3 private party. So why don’t we leave the ambassadorship of Polios and Female Foeticide to Aamir Khan and Mr. Bachchan and then malign them by blog-wars? Or why not smoke a cigarette in public and set an example to youngsters to take light (pun intended) and forget that others exist. So back to square one- Is he ethical?

A team in Olympics works hard and manages to win a bronze medal and we get to read about it in the sports section right under the major write up on Irfan Pathan’s love life all revealed on Orkut. A Police Officer stresses that Shruti was found in OBJECTIONABLE state totally unaware of even the poor girl’s name and dares to speaks this in front of hungry carnivorous reporters. An actor takes a cool cheque for two crores to endorse a cola brand and a physically challenged Pullela Gopichand declines few thousands to endorse a cola brand saying it’s not good for children’s health. The actor gains publicity and is seen on billboards and Pullela is lost in his own loop of same picayune excuse- Ethics. Is the actor/Police Officer/Reporter/Media ethical?

You take it from here my friend. Congratulations for coming so far till the end for this is a heavy dose post not a page 3 gossip or some perverse tips giving post. You must have felt something too or had a connection with my inner callings….still you will head straight out of this browser window and open Orkut/Facebook/MySpace/Gtalk/Yahoo/MSN/Skype and talk repeatedly- ‘Sup? Aur Batao? What’s new ‘; without even bothering to let your inner calling grow and make you aware or even write a line about it here assuring me I am not insane to write this. Here my friend the question is – ‘Are you Ethical?’ Think about it and if you know the answer then for my sanity’s sake drop a line or two.

Thanks!

I remember vividly the subject Business Ethics we had in third semester and how proudly our course d

Thanks!
