I’ve been job hunting since about a month before DH’s training finished. I’ve applied to a handful of jobs that I would actually enjoy doing, and for the most part, are in my acceptable pay range. How long do I wait though, until I start applying for any job just to be employed? I’m sort of at that point. I want a job. I want to get a paycheck again and go somewhere that’s not my house and work with other people. I want to pack my lunch and have that big sigh of relief when I finally make it home at night. But I’ve worked so hard for this degree. I want to do all those things AND use my awesome brain power. Oh, and I’d really like to do so as close to my house as possible because I hate driving.

On the other hand, I have tons of house things that I could keep myself busy with for at least another month until after Christmas. I could stay picky for a little while longer, unpack and decorate, enjoy the time with my family during the holidays, and then get desperate. Of course my fingers would be crossed the whole time hoping that I wouldn’t have to get desperate because an awesome job would come along.

But I would ideally like to have a job and a routine set before DH deploys. I think it would be less disruptive to me if I could keep a system once he’s gone. No job means no therapy or volunteering because I don’t know my availability. It also means my grandiose decorating ideas have to be put on hold because we don’t have the extra income.

Poop.

The registration does not claim any exclusive rights to RAGE. I got this great legal translation pro

The registration does not claim any exclusive rights to RAGE.

I got this great legal translation project from a new agency (sort of… I worked for them once, but it was a long time ago). So far, so fabulous and solvency-inducing. They asked me to do another project and I said I’d be interested in a later round, but couldn’t take anything before I’d finished the legal thingy as the next couple of weeks are really busy course-wise (preparing presentations, getting the books for my essays ahead of the Mad Crush and preparing to think about preparing to think about my dissertation….. aaaaaaargh…..). Translation company man was desperate for translators, however, and I am desperate for money, so I basically spent much of my day translating boring stuff about trademarks instead of reading The Female Malady and Difference and Pathology, which I was greatly looking forward to. Grr. Then, having had my arm twisted into taking an extra section (I negotiated myself a higher rate for the whole job, though – get me and my assertiveness! *preens*) and got 3/4 of the way through it, the original translator sent in her document. I’ll get paid for what I did, but he also asked me to check it using the enormously faffy translation software and check her translations – this was supposed to take about five minutes, but I can’t use the fecking software, it threw up a plethora of errors, most of which related to completely different parts of the translation, and the other translator had not followed the Very Excplicit Instructions we were given and made, well, more errors than I was prepared to correct without being offered a whopping great sum of money to do so. Bah. And I thought my days of picking up the slack after feckless freelancers were over.

So, either he now thinks I am a competent, reliable translator with high standards and a businesslike approach, or she was right, I was wrong and he thinks I’m a muppet who can’t use translation software, gets uppity about proof-reading (why couldn’t she do it herself??? it’s not my job!!) and he’ll never give me any work again. We shall see.

Funny, how every post tagged ‘things that hack me off’ mostly concerns work.

Also, self-employed students don’t get as high a tax-free allowance as employed students do!! ‘No special rules’ for us, apparently. I get taxed like a normal person. I should have read that more carefully. And I need to yell at my bank.

—————-

It makes you think.

I could have just quit my job and set up as a freelance translator, not paid my life savings to SOAS and be able to go to the pub after work, instead of having to read about the racialisation/genderisation of the natural.

That is not the choice I made. So far it’s worth it.

I just wish… well, a work/life balance is too much to hope for, but a work/work balance would do just fine…. No work in October, got used to having lots of time to study, now have no money, have to take all work can get, no time to study.

Funny, though…. I’ve never, not even once, thought, ‘Shouldn’t have left my rich boyfriend,’ though.

063/365

On July 20 and every Monday thereafter, (up until November 16th) I served as a juror on a grand jury.

Today was my first Monday back in the office. Some said it was good to have me back on Mondays and others…well, the jury is still out.

The owner of this office called me goofy, I think she gets a plethora of botox injections and couldn’t get her mouth to say entertaining.

About this photo: This is totally not my office because:

1. I don’t have an office, but a cubicle.
2. It’s messy.

I told my coworker that she did not have to clean up the place for me and she said she hadn’t planned on it.

At least, she said, it looks like she has work going on, unlike my desk that looks abandoned. Hater!

I’m just day dreaming here. Slouching. Wondering why my back hurts.

In light of recent events, our immediate future is up in the air in the most extreme sense. It seems as though we’re learning about “Africa Time”. Similar to Hawaii time, but more drawn out. As there has been no communication with the Nairobi company for quite some time now, we’re exploring other options:

1- Bunker down during the winter, and take whatever jobs we can to scrimp by.

2- Take another contract to fill the winter void, and deal with the aftermath lather.

3- Focus on taking a longer contract that is a perfect fit and go for it (those are few and far between).

4- Wait for a confirmation of a contract for Africa that may never come.

Part of us wants to stay at camp. We’ve established ourselves there. It is home- as wet and cold as it may be at the moment… We’ve managed to save a bit, and I’d love to expand our garden next spring. We’ve just planted spuds and garlic for next year, and have kale starts sprouting. There is much left to do in the forest…

BUT- the other part wants to continue on in our journey. We’ve learned A LOT since we’ve been there, and it’s time to do it for ourselves. The longer we stay at camp, the more we’ll use it as a crutch to stay longer.

So this morning I had a dentist appointment to check up on how my gums are doing. I’ve always

So this morning I had a dentist appointment to check up on how my gums are doing. I’ve always had sensitive gums, & dentists would always say that they were rather puffy after being cleaned, or even just examined. However, they never told me what to do about it. Finally, our current dentist not only showed me how to floss correctly (as I had been flossing incorrectly under the direction of other dentists), but also gave me a prescription mouth wash. She gave me the prescription because my gums had actually begun to pull from my teeth. A healthy mouth has spaces between the gums & the teeth of 1 centimeter. My spaces were 3-4 & even 5 centimeters in certain places. When this happens, it’s classified as a gum disease, & you run the risk of infection & eventually the gums separating from the bone of the jaw. Once that happens, surgery is needed. Well, not one to leave it to just the flossing technique & the mouth wash, I’ve also started using listerine on top of it. I figured I’d hit my gums with everything I could. Well it’s been about a month since I went in to the dentist & today I went back for a 4 week check up. The dentist re-measured the gaps between my gums & teeth & found that the spaces were now 1’s, 2’s, & 3’s. Only two of them were 4’s- much better than the pervious measurements. She said to keep doing what I was doing & that things were definitely improving. A welcome diagnosis.

After the dentist, I figured I’d go to Kaiser & get the H1N1 flu shot. They’ve recently enlarged the age range for eligibility. I know that a lot of people have issues with flu shots, such as they get you sick, they’re not good for you, you’re just setting yourself up for a worse virus later on, etc. But I’m trying to become a substitute, so I’ll be in areas with higher germ counts (kids don’t normally wash their hands after coughing & sneezing into them) & I’ve not had a bad reaction to a flu shot that I can remember. The new criteria to get the shot or nazal spray form are:

if you are pregnant

if you live or care for infants younger than 6 months old

if you are a health care or an emergency medical worker

if you are 6 months to 24 years old

if you are 25 to 64 years old and you have a certain chronic medical condition or a weakened immune system

If you’re 25 to 64 years old without any chromic medical condition or weakened immune system or if you’re 65 & older, you don’t fall into the eligible range. Sorry. Just remember that it’s not the providers like Kaiser & other clinics who set these rules. It’s the health code people who did- but as more vaccination is created & becomes available, the ineligible ages will be allowed to receive the vaccine also. So try not to yell & scream at your providers- they can’t do anything about it, & they can get into a lot of trouble if they give into you. So if you’re someone who thinks they can get whatever they want if they throw a big enough tantrum, think again & try to act your age please. Just keep washing your hands & avoiding unhealthy people until then.

Weight wise, I’ve finally broken my plateau, & am now dropping below 140 pounds. I’ve been stuck just over 140 (141-143) for a few weeks now. But I’ve finally broken through! I’ll be working hard to get down to the low 130’s to mid 120’s by the beginning of March for my friend’s wedding. I’ve found a dress that I really like & my friend approved it, so I’ll be buying it as soon as I get the money to do so. She’s letting the bride’s maids wear what they want as long as it’s within the color scheme of the wedding. So I had wanted to show her the picture & make sure that she liked it first. It’s got a lot of black lace on it, & I wasn’t sure how she’d feel about black at her wedding, but she likes it. (It’s found here at http://www.unique-vintage.com/style-blue-black-tulle-party-dress-size-p-3999.html) I’m thinking of getting cute short lace gloves to go with it with some cute black shoes. I love weddings, & now that my friends & I are at the age where people begin to get married, I’ll get to go to a lot of them! I like this particular web site for buying dresses because they give measurements for bust, waist & hips so that you can pick the correct size (xsmall, small, medium, large, xlarge etc.). So there’s no guessing involved when trying to decide what size you are.

I’m currently waiting for the last of my reference letters to come in & then I’ll be able to turn them into the school district, along with proof of my passed TB test & my livescan finger printing forms. Then all I’ll need are my official transcripts which have been requested. It will be extremely nice to finally have a pay check again. More than $100 a day will be most welcomed to pay for things like dental, gas, a professional wardrobe (that fits), fixing the car, supplies etc. Right now, the enjoyment of having clothes too big for me has worn off. Most of my clothes are much too big- including the few professional looking items I have, so that money would go towards a few pairs of work pants with some button down blouses.

Well that’s all the updating I have for now. Sincerely, & soon to be working,

Kim

Well the good news is the super duper Wolf-friendly cold-killers Doc gave me are working wonders. I’m still a bit stuffed up, but my ears are loads better. I can hear almost normally again.

Ran left a message on my phone saying he’ll be over tonight to ‘talk about things’ (Yay, Woop, Whoho, Great! Just what I was hoping for.)

(Fucking Fuck Fuckity Fuck.)

AND I went back to work today, and it sucked.

Well, sort of. My boss did tell me they’ve decided to re-offer me a contract next year, so that’s good.

Not so good was the 160 emails in my inbox – none of which having reports that I had requested for a meeting deadline today. So I spent a few hours calling, and emailing people to yell at them for not doing what they were supposed to when they were supposed to.

It is hard to be all thumbscrewy, uncompromising, and intimidating to workmates who answer the phone and immediately ask if I had a great time in Raro.

So it looks like I have a ton of reports that will trickle in WAY after the deadline.

I will take refuge in the fact that I had an amazing time away, and they didn’t.

So there.

(Yes I am petty.)

Also now I’m feeling the need for some scuba diving goodness, so you can take a look at some feel-good photos with me.

Divers descending.. Just remembered to point out that I didn’t take any of these photos, one of the ladies I was buddied with took them, and was kind enough to email them round to us. I love it when you come across genuinely friendly accommodating people!!

Tommy the fish… He waves at you when you wave at him, and he followed us almost the whole dive. He’s like a big blue/black Labrador puppy.

Me giving a big OK! I got it right this time, but I almost always forget not to give thumbs ups when someone pulls out a camera… Thumbs up mean you want to go to the surface, and when you’re 27 meters down that’s kind of a serious undertaking!

Spanish Dancer nudibranch!! I’ve never seen one before, it was awesome, AND dancing! It’s probably a little bad that I wanted to chase it, but I managed to rein in the impulse. I very much like to be in the drivers seat when I’m diving – the wolf doesn’t know the first thing about breathing through a regulator.

Lion Fish (Rawr). I’ve never seen one of these before either, and I saw TWO on this dive, this one, and a HUGE one inside the wreck of an old ship, surrounded by really big black sea urchins .

Doing my 3 minute safety stop at 5 meters… I’m crap at getting my buoyancy right, so while most of the others were able to just kind of hover there and spin around and stuff I decided to stay on the safe side and use the chain.

… There we go. Work is all forgotten. Now I’m wishing my ears were better already so that I can get back in the water and do some more diving (I have NO idea where I’d go here… the weather is kinda notorious for being bad for diving here.)

Now all I have to do is get through Ran’s visit without maiming him/ jumping his bones, and I’ll be able to SLEEP again.

Monday night, and I’m sat in a hotel once again. This hotel is not as grand as the previous one from the outside, but the rooms are infinitely better.

The restaurant is great (not as upmarket, but the food is very good), the bar is nearly HALF the price, and everything seems to work.

I have quite possibly the widest bed in the history of hotel beds – I could probably sleep across it, and not hang over the sides (quite a feat – being over 6′ tall).

The evening has been taken up with working – rather than sit in the hotel room contemplating my navel, I am trying to get my portion of this project done as fast as possible; meaning hopefully that I can get ahead of the development curve – and perhaps back to my family a little more quickly.

The massive saving grace of this hotel is that the 3G signal is STRONG – meaning the 3G dongle on my netbook is nearly as fast as broadband. That saves me £20 for the hotel wireless broadband for the week…

Perhaps I should draw up a calendar like we do for the kids, and cross the days out as they pass.

Quick word…

They’re already starting to thin the herd here at the Ohio Department of Health. My job assignment is scheduled to end after tomorrow. I’ll write some more about what I’m thinking of this new development tomorrow. Since tonight’s post is already mostly written, let me present it…

Have you ever puttered around with Google Docs? Google Docs is kind of like a watered-down Microsoft Office that resides on the Internet as opposed to your own home computer. All the apps and all your documents are stored on the Internet, a.k.a. the “cloud”. There’s no need for carrying around a flash memory stick and risking its theft or misplacement. Best of all, you can invite other people from all over the planet to come in and collaborate on these documents with you.

This is probably the only kind of cloud computing that I can readily understand. And trust me, I need to know about cloud computing because it’s going to be the next big buzzword to spring on the next HR manager I talk to. It may not put me on their IT staff, but it should show that I have more vision for their company than most people.

Google Docs and the next job hunt

This is how I intend to conduct my next job hunt:

Move my résumé to Google Docs.

Send invites to potential HR managers to view my résumé there.

My cover letter is going to say that I’m a big believer in using tomorrow’s office technology today. I will stress that I am making the effort to understand the concept of cloud computing and how it can benefit the office of today, and toward that end, I’m going to conduct the distribution of my résumé the cloud computing way.

Future computing

I see the computing public eventually going to using thin clients, little relatively dumb terminals about the size of a book that do nothing but web browsing, because really, that’s all a user-side computer needs to be able to do anymore (that and kick documents out through a cheap inkjet printer). Now that there are such online suites of office software as Microsoft Sharepoint, Google Apps, and Google Docs, these can totally replace Microsoft Office and OpenOffice. Even the poorest families should be able to buy and use a thin client and do homework for school using Google Docs.

According to BBC news, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8346936.stm jobless rate had rose over 10%. In October of 09, the jobless rate was 10.2% which is the highest since April 1983. Forecasting the future, there is still a possibility of more jobloss. Today 70% of our economy is based on consumer spending, if these consumers which includes me and you does not have a job, how are we going to spend? how is 70% going to be contributed to the economy? In other words, what are we going to do if we loose our job? I agree money cannot buy all the happiness, but money certainly buys the nessesities of our lives. In reality, we cannot survive without money.

I have a question for you, can you give me a 100% guarrantee of you having a job until one year from now, one month, one week from today or even tomorrow??? if you are willing to say yes with a 100% confidence then I must salute you, but i am sure you are going to answer this question in one word, NO and that’s fine. “Truths are bitter but never hidden”. I am saying it flat out, i cannot gurantee you of me having a job tomorrow. That is why I chose not only 100% but 200% guarrantteed way of having money all my life. No this is NOT a scam, its for real, its a real business. Along with my full time job at Barnes and Noble, inc as an Accounts Payable Representative, I am an Entrepreneur working “with” and NOT “for” CarbonCopyPro. It makes a huge difference when you are working “with” a company rather than “for” a company.

Today when working “with” CCPro, I can set my own, no more 9-5 strict working hours. I can work whereever I want to, in my living room, my bedroom, even on a beach with my laptop, in other words, no more driving all the way to the office and spend the most hours stuck in that crazy traffic. I can write my own paycheck based on exactly what I earn instead of the boss writing my paycheck after pulling out the big bucks from what we earned for himself. To make it short, as an entrepreneur, I am my own boss.

So last Thanksgiving I had been here in the South for about a month, still in pretty bad shape as I

So last Thanksgiving I had been here in the South for about a month, still in pretty bad shape as I look back on it. Depressed. Sleeping a lot. I was still getting California disability checks so I hadn’t gotten serious about looking for work yet. I had applied at a couple retail places in hopes of getting holiday work, but hadn’t been hired. I had no interest in working at WalMart, that’s for sure.

On the day after Thanksgiving “Black Friday” we heard the news that an employee at a WalMart in Valley Stream, NY had been trampled and killed by eager Black Friday shoppers. The next day I read where some of the customers complained that the store had been closed during investigation of the incident. I hadn’t started the blog yet, but this is what I wrote on Facebook on November 29, 2008:

Attention Wal-Mart shoppers, how in the name of God, Mom, and apple pie do you STEP OVER A FELLOW HUMAN BEING and then proceed to shop for Plasma TVs?
How do you complain when the police close down the store because A HUMAN BEING WAS KILLED?
Did you think that you were going to just purchase your cheap s***, go home and wrap it, and have it sit under your Christmas tree?
Your CHRISTmas tree?
You make me ashamed to be human.

Yeah, I was a tad angry. For a minute there I actually thought that this would mean the end of Black Friday as we know it, silly me.

Here we are a year later and I am going to be a part of it. Initially I had Wednesday off, working 8 hours on Thanksgiving, and wasn’t scheduled to come in on Friday until 6pm. That would mean that I would miss all the craziness, and I was actually disappointed. I figured this will be my only Black Friday at WalMart and I wanted to have some good stories for my fervent readers. Then yesterday the head DOJ of the store asked me if I could come in at (are you sitting down?) 2am to 6am and help out, and I said (are you still sitting down?) that I would.

Our store is open 24/7 so we’re not going to have people rushing the doors like they did in New York. From what I’ve been told they set up the sale items in the middle of the main aisles and shrink-wrap or otherwise rope them off until the appointed time, then shoppers line up and wait. From what the veterans have told me, this still does not completely eliminate shoving, pushing, and other animal behavior, but at least our store has had no deaths…yet. Apparently I am to stand there and look like a tough guy and keep people in line and away from the goodies.

I have also heard some talk that there may be tickets given out or random drawings, but I don’t know. All I know is that this year you may be reading about me in the papers. Hell, at least I’ll finally get published.

I am literally a Girl Friday – - my boss’s go-to for all work issues. The desk work is a piece of cake, something I’ve known for years, but the ins and outs of this nitty-gritty, rough-and-tumble business – - not so easy. I am constantly on Google, researching things like “quench and tempered” and “4140 verse 4143” until my head starts to buzz. It really isn’t so bad, because at least I am learning something new.

The Guys (as they shall be hence forth known) tumble into my office during lunch break. They like to ask questions about my singledom, and have already formulated a scheme known as “Set-Up-The-Office-Girl-On-A-Date”, which is either frightening or sweet – - I haven’t decided.

Boss has me run errands, too. Lots of them. He makes me drive his truck, which – - let me put this into perspective for you – - is like an ant driving a Tonka Truck. Whenever I pull into a vendor to pick up a steel part, I get more than enough curious brow-raises. All the same, it makes me feel tough.

My hours are great, too. I have plenty of time for school.

So, this new job? It’s wonderful.

Hey friends! So I’ve finally got some news on the work front. I’m just gonna tell you right now beca

Hey friends! So I’ve finally got some news on the work front. I’m just gonna tell you right now because I’m a blabber mouth who sucks at telling secrets, and I’ve already been tweeting about it all day

So first off, I got hired at Starbucks! Yayyyy! I’m going to be working as a full-time supervisor for the next few months, and start training this week. I’m happy there will be no void in my paychecks, and the Starbies job should actually pay just as much as the reporter gig

I’m not going to just be working at Starbucks though. You all know I realized a long time ago that I do not want to be a daily reporter, and I don’t want to be a PR person unless I find the perfect company. These are the only things my skills and background would allow me to do.

But why just do what my background allows? Especially if it would just make me miserable? (again) So I’ve decided to instead follow my heart, my gut and my passions. I’m throwing all sense and rationality to the wind and working toward a personal training specialist certification with CanFit Pro (Canada’s national standard).

I know, right? Me? A personal trainer? Why not!? Exercise and fitness isn’t just a phase or a hobby, it’s my life. What draws me to jobs like reporting and Starbucks are the people. I love meeting fabulous people, and even more I want to help the ones that are looking for it. My mom told me this wonderful thing along the lines of “the day you discover your passions is when you’ll never work another day in your life.”

Of course, I expect to work And I expect it to be hard at times. I don’t also plan on plugging away with people at the gym all day. I plan to continue my education with a future certification as a Nutrition & Wellness Consultant. Perhaps I’ll even want to be a class instructor – who knows! Basically, I see this as the first step in many steps to come. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I’m taking a step forward, and not just another step back.

I also plan to keep the journalism thing up. My new experience and titles will allow me to delve further into health and wellness writing. I’m lucky to have made a lot of contacts in journalism school, and I have a long list of Canadian publications I hope to freelance for.

I’m so excited!!!

And before we move on, I have something else I have to get off my chest – I’m back on the VitaMuffins.

I toasted my favourite deep chocolate flavour last night and put some marshmallow fluff on top. ohmysweetlord. It got crunchy on the outside, but soft and melty on the inside, then the fluff was all frosting-like on the top. Every single bite was worth every penny spent

Breakfast this morning was not very photogenic, which usually equals deliciousness.

Two Nature’s Path flax waffles smothered in 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 tbsp almond butter, 2 tbsp faux-syrup (mixed with a hand blender). And sprinkled with cinnamon of course. SO good! Freezer waffles are only filling when you throw protein + fat into the mix.

Then it was off to BodyStep, ie the funnest class ever (sorry spin, you hurt too much to be fun ). Step class is definitely not one of those workouts you can just phone in. You definitely get out of it what you put in, more so than some of the other classes. I think that’s why I always come out feeling so satisfied and accomplished

Afterward, I came home and drank some chocolate Amazing Meal blended with almond milk, half a banana, yogurt and ice.

I was a sweaty mess. But I had to look decent for my job interview this afternoon. Enter lots of showering, hair straightening, caking on make-up, ironing clothes (ugh) and digging out accessories and voila!

Hi!! I’m actually modelling my new necklace and earrings. For years I wore nothing but giant flashy earrings, but I’ve been on a chunky necklace kick lately. And I’m a sucker for girly flowers

And apparently the gussying up worked!

Oh, and there was a lunch, carefully eaten as not to spill anything on myself.

Smoked salmon on a bagel with laughing cow cheese, capers and spinach and an orange on the side. This salmon is local bbq flavoured stuff. SO good!! We Maritimers know how to do our smoked salmon

After all my running around, I came home and tried out my other KIND bar. This time in Walnut & Date.

I had high hopes for this bar after Kath raved about it on her blog recently. Plus, dates are one of my favourite foods and I love them in just about anything. But, I wasn’t a huge fan! Maybe my expectations were just too high. I loved the walnuts, their texture reminded me a lot of sugar cookies. But I couldn’t really taste the dates. Honey is the third ingredient, and it was definitely the overpowering flavour in this bar.

Supper was (what else) chicken salad pita made with my leftover roast chicken from yesterday.

YUM!! You can see my running hat in the background. Meh. I’m a slob.

Finally, you may be wondering what “To the stars on the wings of a pig” means. Technically, it’s “Ad astra per alia porci.” It was the motto and personal stamp of John Steinbeck and appeared on the insert of all his books. It was a jab at an old teacher who once told him he’d only be a successful writer when “pigs flew.” I studied Latin and have a soft spot for Latin phrases. I’ve adopted it as my personal motto, to remind me that anything is possible

P.S. I’ve updated my About page so feel free to go check it out!

Till next time!
