At the November 5^th meeting, the Department of Legislative Services (DLS) provided an overview of the maintenance of effort requirements for education and the Workgroup heard from the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) and the Public School Superintendents Association of Maryland (PSSAM).  Both organizations offered their support of the current State Board adjudicated waiver process understanding the denial of each of the three waiver requests by the State Board has prompted discussion and legislative proposals for reform.  Both organizations also expressed that a waiver should be granted based on specific county criteria, not statewide standards.  The MOE presentation and the testimony from both organizations can be found on the DLS website.

so are you having problem with your windows autologin? your computer just login by itself? there are two ways to change it,
just go to control panel> user account1 and user account2 in xp. but unfortunately not all xp system shows you this two option, you only see one “user account” option.
in case of the second scenario, you go to that only one, control panel>user account.
now see if you only have the generic users like administrator and guest, if so then you must “create new account”. after you create new account, “change password” for your custom user and administrator.
then pick “change the way users log on and off”, uncheck the “use the welcome screen” and click “apply options”
now you restart your computer and see if it is working. (if you don’t have custom user and adding password for your administrator you’ll just bypass the login screen like before).
there will be error saying the password is incorrect, and prompting you to type the password.
now, to eliminate that, you go to “start” menu on your taskbar (left side). go to run (or you can use command prompt), and type:
control userpasswords2
click ok.
this option actually shown in your control panel> user accounts if you joining a domain, but if you only in a workgroup then you have to type it manually.
in this windows uncheck “users must enter a user name and password to use this computer”,
in addition, you go to “advanced” tab, and check “require user to press ctrl+alt+delete”, this way you’ll have classical form of windows login like in windows 2k.

This post is for those who have XP host and a VPC running with Win2003 and others as well who have the below stated problem.
If you installed Moss 2007 on a standalone machine running Win2003 and later you plan to move it on a new domain then below steps will help you.


1. First in win2003 run DCPromo.exe from the start->run and set it up. DC promo is the most easiest, simple and automatic way of configuring AD and DNS easily
2. After the machine is added to the domain and if you try to open the sharepoint central or other sites then browser will give error. The reason is that Administrator account has been updated with domain information and moss is not updated. In order to fix up the problem just run the below commands in dos prompt to sort it out.
First, goto cd %commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\12\Bin directory
Second, stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -userlogin DomainName\UserName -password NewPassword
Here NewPassword can be the same password that you are using or you can give the new password
Lastly goto c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files in windows explore and right click the folder->Sharing and Security->security tab; add Network Service to the group with full access
After this just run the central site and you are done.

Some of us, had experienced difficulty on how we share resources in workgroup with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7. During the time of Windows XP and Windows 2000, it is so easy to share resouces in workstation, just using simple file sharing, same workgroup name, enabling file and printer sharing in firewall, administrator password (optional), then you can now share the resources. But now with Windows Vista and Seven, after you do the above procedures, still you can’t access the shared resources. In this post, I will show you on how to overcome this difficulties.

Lets first enumerate some changes on network features between those Windows OS:

1. They uses same default workgroup name which is WORKGROUP.

2. Shared folder name in XP is Shared Documents while in Vista/Seven is Public.

3.Simple File Sharing in XP is allowed by default while inVista/Seven is not allowed because access to shared folders requires username and passwords.

4. The place to change settings and preferences in XP you did that in My Network Places, in Vista/Seven you do that in Network Folder.

5. The Detection and access to computers on the network in XP detects and accesses computers in the same workgroup, were as Vista/Seven detects and access all computers on the network.

6. The network controls with XP various places throughout operating system, but with Vista/Seven most are in Network and Sharing Center.

Things to check:

1. You must have Administrator privilege.

2. All computers must be in the same Workgroup name.

3. Set network location type to Private, because we are configuring home and small network.

4. Open ports to allow File and Print sharing. Disregard this if you’re using Windows Firewall in Vista/Seven take care automatically in opening for the right port when you turn on your network discovery. If you’re using third party firewall, you have to open this port up yourself. Lists of ports to be open when you’re using 3rd party firewall:

5. Turn on additional File and Printer Sharing options in Vista/Seven such as File sharing, Public folder sharing, Media sharing, and Pint sharing.

6. Consider using Password Protected Sharing.

7. If a dialog box pops-up saying Not enough privilege to access, just add the user from Sharing Permission Rigths.

There is always a confusion when it comes to file sharing between two systems of different Operating Systems.

1) Have same Workgroup Name

Click on the Windows logo in the lower left, then right-click on Computer and select Properties.

Go to Start, then right-click on My Computer and select Properties.

On a Microsoft windows vista system right-click on a folder that you want to share, and select Properties. Note that you can also select Share here, but I highly recommend my way due to permissions issues later on.

On a XP system Go to Start > Control Panel, then click on Printers and Faxes.

On the Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing.

Right-click on the printer you want to share, and select Sharing.

Check off “Share this folder”. Then, click the Permissions button. This will verify that “Everyone” is present in the access list. It’s also vital that “everyone” also be in the Security user list for this folder, shown next.

Click the “Share this printer” radio button, then click OK. The printer is now shared.

On the Security tab here, note that “Everyone” does not appear in the Group or user names list. Click Edit, and then physically type Everyone in order to add it to this list. Failure to do so will result in a lot of “access denied” errors when you try accessing this folder over the network.

Note:

1)  For file and printer sharing in Vista make the network as Private.

In Vista’s Network and Sharing Center, you can click View Full Map, and a display of your home network is presented. By clicking on any one of the computers shown above, you’ll be able to access their shared folders and printers.

By clicking on My Network Places and selecting View Workgroup Computers, you’ll be able to see your networked computers. By clicking on them, you’ll be able to use their shared folders and printers.

Note:  If Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP run this patch on systems running XP.

Click on the Pearl Button in the lower left, then type cmd in the Search box and press Enter.

Go to Start, then select RUN.

At the command prompt type ipconfig and press enter. You would see couple of information. What you’re after is the “IPv4 address”. In the example above, it’s 192.168.2.103.

In the RUN dialog box, type cmd and then click OK.

In the command window, type ipconfig and press enter. In the example above, my IP address is 192.168.2.101.

Click Pearl then type:
\\192.168.x.x

in the Search field. Of course, substitute 192.168.x.x for the actual IP address of the PC that you’re attempting to access. Watch the direction of the slashes (\\ not //), and there are no spaces. Press Enter.

Go to Start, then select RUN.

Results
After a short delay, you should see a window showing you the shared files and printers available at that IP address.

If it fails then you would see the following error messages:

THESE MESSAGES ARE A SURE SIGN THAT A FIREWALL IS IN THE WAY.

Firewalls

Programs like Norton Internet Protection, McAfee, Trend Micro, ZoneAlarm……. Chances are that if you have a firewall on your computers, they won’t be able to share files and printers unless the firewall is… properly configured to allow your network to communicate!

Disable all of your firewalls temporarily to rule them out as an issue!

Note that “File and Printer Sharing” is checked off on the Exceptions tab, meaning that as far as Vista and XP’s firewall is concerned, file and printer sharing is allowed.

In Norton Internet Protection 2007’s firewall settings. I’m adding 192.168.2.0 as a trusted computer, which will allow files and printers to be shared.

You could enter each of other PC’s IP addresses individually here, but by employing a network trick of sorts. Notice there’s a zero at the end of the IP address? Even though it looks like one, 192.168.2.0 is not an IP address but an entire subnet, and it represents all IP’s from 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.254.

In one swoop, all possible IP’s on home network is allowed, so one doesn’t need to adjust the firewall at each PC if they add a PC down the road.

ZoneAlarm, access its settings, and define network in the Trusted, Safe, or Allowed zone. In this case Add a Subnet, and you can define 192.168.2.0 to allow my entire network access to and from this PC.
