2009 2010 Review of the Australian Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) Professionals

2009 2010 Review of the Australian Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL)

Professionals and other Skilled Migrants. Frequently Asked Questions – Review of the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL):Q1. What is happening to the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL)?

A review of the purpose of the MODL and its methodology has commenced and is expected to be completed in late 2009. The review aims to make MODL a more strategic tool in identifying the medium to long-term skill needs that complement Australia’s skill supply through the domestic tertiary education sector.

Q2. Why is the MODL being reviewed?

The review of the MODL is aimed at developing a better link between skilled migrant employment outcomes, the national training agenda and the work of Skills Australia, to ensure that skilled migration is aimed at responding to future skill needs which cannot be addressed through domestic training and skills development.

Q3. When will the new MODL be implemented?

The arrangements for the transition to the new MODL will be determined once the outcomes of the review are finalised. The Critical Skills List will remain in place while the review is in progress and then be phased out following the implementation of any recommendations flowing from the review.

Q4. What will happen to priority processing of CSL applications?

Occupations which are listed on the CSL receive priority processing, which assists the targeting of the migration program. These arrangements will continue until the review is finalised. Once the review is finalised, arrangements for phasing out the CSL will be announced.

Two years from now, I will board a plane to New Zealand. I don’t know where I will live, what

Two years from now, I will board a plane to New Zealand. I don’t know where I will live, what I will do, or whether I will come back. To me, this prospect is terrifying. I am a planner, not a doer. Leaving my country without a job and a place set up (difficult at best from abroad) is on my big list of Things I Never Do. That’s why I’m doing it.

I’ve always dreamed of travelling and living abroad. But I dreamed of it in an “if I win the lottery” way. Here’s the reality: I am never going to win the lottery. I actually know this for certain because I don’t even play the lottery. So if I don’t win the lottery, how can I get there? The answer is: by giving up everything and going for it.

Some people will think I’m crazy. I have a good job, an apartment and a lot of stuff. I have a car and a Christmas tree. These are things that bind people somewhere. Truthfully, I am afraid of leaving these things. I like security. I like routine.

Here’s a few things I’m doing to keep this control freak nightmare to a minimum:

1) Buying real estate. It might seem weird to buy in a city you’re leaving, but it means I’ll have something to rent while I’m away. Someone paying rent to me means they’ll pay off my mortgage while I share an apartment with six Kiwis in an effort to spend as little as possible. If I come back I can live at my place, if not I can sell it.

2) Renting a storage unit. This ties in to the basic principle of my real estate, having something to come back to. Somehow it’s easier packing up a few things and running away from your life, if it’s still sort of living itself back in Canada.

3) Booking a working holiday through SWAP. Travelling with the help of an agency will majorly reduce my stress. Set me up with a job bank and a bedbug-ridden mattress upon arrival? YES PLEASE. Knowing I will survive the first week is half the battle.

4) Buying a thorough travel guide. Planners need the tools of their trade.

5) Getting NZ contacts before I land. Knowing people in New Zealand (hi, Emma!) will make it easier to find a job. Even if they’re not in my field, they will know where the “meccas” are for different kinds of business. When I find the ad/PR mecca, I’m a few information interviews away from finding out everything I need to know about PR in NZ.

These are the things I need to feel comfortable giving up my life as I know it and becoming one of those cool people I wish I was. Those people who go on wild adventures, leave hearth and home and really live. The thing is, we’re all those people. Some of us just need something extra to get there.

AUSTRALIA is rapidly emerging from the downturn into an economic boom the Reserve Bank believes could last for years, powered by the resource industry and rapid population growth. The bank’s quarterly review of the economy, published yesterday, has sharply upgraded its short-term economic forecasts and presented a radical rethink of Australia’s growth potential.

World hits Rudd over boat people stand-off. THE Federal Government’s tough stance on asylum seekers is attracting international media attention – most of it critical and likely to damage Australia’s standing. .

Out of the Woods: state’s tourism links to golf’s El Dorado. HE’S not so much a golfer as a phenomenon, one of the greatest athletes of our age, a multicultural role model and cash register on legs. And as Eldrick ”Tiger” Woods paces around Kingston Heath this week during his first Australian visit in 11 years, in addition to any personal aspirations he might harbour, he’ll be carrying the hopes of the state’s tourism and events industries on those powerful shoulders.

I wish more of you were here. TOURISM QUEENSLAND hailed it as the ”most successful tourism campaign ever”, a $2.5 million strategy that returned $390 million in global publicity. But the Best Job in the World campaign has failed to lure foreigners. Official figures show the number of international holidaymakers travelling to Queensland dropped by 8 per cent in the 2008-09 financial year. The total number of international visitors – which also includes people travelling on business and for other reasons – fell 5 per cent.

Australians are leaving the country as never before. The soaring Aussie dollar and low international airfares pushed the number of Australians taking holidays overseas up above 600,000 in September with the number leaving in the past year hitting a record 6 million.

DIAC: Australians need to travel to assist with Working Holiday program. More Australians must travel overseas to assist with the influx of international working holiday makers visiting Australia, the Department of Immigration And Citizenship (DIAC) has said. DIAC director of working holiday section, Deirdre Russack told delegates at the Adventure and Backpacker Industry Conference (ABiC) today that many more UK citizens are visiting Australia than the other way around and was also the case in other markets where Australia has reciprocal visa arrangements.

‘Brand Australia’ knocked off top spot in Country Brand Index. Australia has been knocked off top spot as the world’s best country brand, in the 2009 FutureBrand Country Brand Index (CBI). After three years as the most popular country brand, Australia has slipped to third position and was overtaken by the USA in first place and Canada second. New Zealand came in at fourth spot.

THE 10th anniversary of the referendum reminded me that I should dust off the old ”Young Australians for a Republic” banner in the shed and drop it off at the national archives.

We have officially been in NZ for a month. It seems like home already even without furniture. We are

We have officially been in NZ for a month. It seems like home already even without furniture. We are in job-hunting mode. With our working holiday visas we are now eligible to work any non-professional jobs we like. For me that means subbing, T. has sworn he doesn’t want to do IT, but has yet to choose an alternative field.

We are looking for a new place to live and a car this week. The place we are renting now is great, but it was sold two weeks after we moved in, plus its $300 a week, which is more then we can handle at this point. Since we will have a car soon we are looking at Auckland’s suburbs. There seem to be a ton of rooms for rent for $100-150 a week. The challenge will be finding a house that will allow a couple. Most of these places are 4-6 bedroom homes, so renting to a couple is less then desirable. When we were renting out rooms in Austin I never considered couples. What goes around comes around I guess.

Our weakest link at this point is our property in Austin. Not only has one side not been rented, but the manager is still asking us for money to fix things. Today it was the back doors that need to be replaced and a possibility of mold in side B. If this was a used car that I had bought I’d feel cheated finding out that everything was broken, but since it’s a house I just get sad. So for the last two months we have been paying for repairs and the entire mortgage, and it’s eating through our savings quickly. We are not in the red yet, but we will definitely be spending a good chunk of time this year building up some savings. Good thing we are going to be in NZ awhile, vacations can wait.

Emotionally T. and I are surviving. Since we are hording money, but still without work or transportation we are around each other 24/7. Some days are worse than others, but considering all the stuff hanging over our heads right now I’d say we are doing really well. We’ve gone to some meetup groups, and met some good people. The people here are really friendly compared to Austin.

Things we learned this week:
•	You must flag down a bus, or it will not stop.
•	Fireworks are acceptable fun at all times of the day, in the city or out.
•	Every Sunday at the racetrack there is a huge used car fair. Around 3,000 people bring their car to be sold.
•	Homeless people talk to much, and much to loud. At least he knows he’s an alcoholic, that’s the first step right?
•	Having your groceries delivered is the greatest service ever. Having to haul the groceries takes all the joy out of food.
•	New Zealand does not use checks at all. Everything is transferred between peoples’ accounts. This is going to make working with our Wells Fargo bank very difficult.
•	The greatest crime in the world is washing your passport. Even though it looks fine, just a little worn, people of all occupations will chastise you for it.

That’s all for now. I keep on telling myself that this move is supposed to be hard otherwise everyone would do it. We can only go up from here, I hope.

Miss everyone.

Travis and I decided Oct. 2008 that moving to NZ was the way to go. I originally thought it would be an easy process, everything I read said that they needed teacher and IT people. If I had the money to spend I should have paid someone to handle everything, but money is always an issue, and I was under the impression that it was going to be easy.
I got together all my papers, had my qualifications reviewed, registered for the NZ teaching council and thought the hard stuff was over. After all, my teaching degree fell into a long-term need group. Why would they make it hard? I don’t know, but they did.
We went the Skilled Migrant route. I wasn’t looking for a temporary solution. If I was going to move to another country it was going to be a permanent thing. However, getting a permanent visa takes a lot more paperwork and a lot more waiting time than a temporary visa. The medical review was especially thorough and a pain in the butt.. Had I started this whole thing again I would have started it at least six months earlier, to attempt to get this done in less then a year is really tough.

Volunteering is the making up a lot of people’s travelling itinerary nowadays, and its fast becoming a must do whilst backpacking the globe. Not only do you get a better sense of the community your travelling to, you are also fulfilling self worth and giving back to a place, which at the time is giving you so much.

I hope as travellers you can understand this. I was once working in a place called Atherton, in Far North Queensland and was invited to do some four wheel driving on a work mates parents property, It so happened his parents had taken in a couple of WWOOFERS and we asked them if they wanted to come along. His parent’s property in Herberton was amazing with four-wheel drive tracks to old gold mines, lush rainforest, waterfalls and just beautiful scenery. We ended up at this most beautiful billabong, with dragonflies buzzing through the reeds, it was a sultry humid afternoon, with clean emerald green water to swim in surrounded by a 360 degree view of nothing but nature. Totally awe inspiring experience and I just thought what Karma is playing out here for these WWOOFERS who were volunteering a couple of hours each day, to help my mates elderly parents out on there farm. Its why travelling hands out large doses of good karma to those who deserve it.

Western Australia has loads of good karma out there if you are willing to muck in and get your hands dirty. The Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre is just one example of what’s out there. It is Volunteer based and short term volunteers are usually visitors to the Bunbury region who want to be involved for a short time only. To become a short term volunteer you must be able to spend a minimum of six weeks at the Centre and be available to come in at least five days a week. There is a standard minimum of 4 hours per day. As a volunteer you can expect to be talking to visitors on the beach and explaining what the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre does. You will also be assisting in the management of the Interaction Zone during dolphin visits and participating in “Coast care” activities and generally assisting with various tasks around the centre.

WOOFING is another way to help. It generally involves working on a farm for a minimum amount of hours per day in return for your board and meals, its a great way to have fantastic Australian experience and will even count towards your second year visa .It may not be exactly volunteering but will put you on the path towards it. Also visit the local community centre of the town your travelling to, they are always in need of people to help out with things like soup kitchens and opportunity shops, you may stumble upon a new fashion or end up in a random hacky sack game. . Slapping the goon with random local people and having an experience that’s unique to you. Its also not about the achievement of being there anymore, its about what your doing while you are there and that’s truly beautiful, and is what travelling and creating your unique tour to Australia is about… having random experiences that feeds the soul.

So, there’s writing, which I find not particularly hard. Then there’s rewriting, which I hate and fear, but am trying to learn to embrace (remind me to talk more about that some time). Then there’s taking something you’ve written, rewritten, re-rewritten and had published and…writing it again.

That’s a real feat. I’ve been wrestling with the treatment for Homing (the movie) for some time now. Lots of reading and thinking and making notes and writing and thinking and rewriting and thinking and then rewriting again. Oh, and some movie watching too. I finally finished the process yesterday around 5pm. I felt roughly the way I did upon finishing the writing of the novel in the first damn place. Triumphant, relieved, terrified, totally tapped out.

What an odd experience to write that story again, same but different. Many things stayed the same, but a surprising number of details changed necessarily. At this point, it still feels very much like Homing the book. I understand that things may yet change in future iterations of Homing the movie, but I feel okay about that at this point. I may have more to say about this some time in the future. For now, I’m just glad I can move to the next phase… sending the treatment to the producers, and chilling out for a bit.

So, you know, mission accomplished, thus far.

Trotzdem sollte man mehrere Angebote vergleichen bevor man zuschlägt.

Job:
Hab ich noch keinen. Den such ich mir vor Ort.

Wohnung:

In true vacation form, I was felled by a miserable cold. And then it started raining, and who knows

In true vacation form, I was felled by a miserable cold. And then it started raining, and who knows when it will stop? So, it’s been like that.

We’ve been a busy couple of vacationers. Kev’s been working as hard as he can getting his record finalized. Album art, check. Looks great. Got it mastered by the guy he wanted, check, listening to it right now, sounds great. Get it all off to the duplicators, well, that’s been a bit complicated, but we’re getting there.

Last night he took the mastered disc out to the car to listen to it. I couldn’t sleep, despite a liberal dose of cold medication (or maybe because of) and so I slipped on a dress and flip flops and padded out in the pouring rain to join him in the car and listen drowsily. Great way to hear it. Highly recommended. I hope you find at least one great rain storm after you get your copy of Son of a Rudderless Boat, coming soon to a folk festival stage near you (provided Lunenburg is near you).

As for me, I have yet to set hands to keyboard for the purpose of writing the treatment. This is so my MO. I write at the very last minute, and then only if my life depends on it. I can see it all so clearly in my head. I see Leah in scenes that aren’t in the book, but are nonetheless her scenes, scenes that came so naturally, I must have always known I’d need them for some other purpose. And Henry, my god, he couldn’t be more alive to me if he actually lived next door. Don’t tell the others, but Henry’s my favourite.

Anyhow, as with every single vacation here in the Sheridan Homelands, it doesn’t matter how much time we spend, it’s never, ever enough. We have a week left here, and there are still so many people to see, three decks to build (today was supposed to be the day, but see under: rain. Actually, Tuesday was supposed to be the day but see under: ridiculous cold), a CD to pick up and a treatment to write.

If we ever took the kind of vacation that involved flying over a body of water larger than the Saint Lawrence Seaway, how would we ever get anything done? I imagine if I ever had a real vacation, I’d be dangerous.

And how’s your July?

Today is the last day of my working holiday to the Gold Coast of Australia. Having thoroughly enjoy

Today is the last day of my working holiday to the Gold Coast of Australia. Having thoroughly enjoyed the last week I am looking forward to returning to Auckland New Zealand to see my family and friends quickly before returning to start a new contract here in Australia that will see me travelling more and more I expect.

With the lovely temperatures here during the winter ranging from 20 to 28 degrees during the day, a wonderful light sea breeze with little more than a puff of cloud in the sky you would wonder why everyone doesn’t live here. Having lived on the Gold Coast for the summer of 2001, arriving on September 13 two days after the horrible atrocity of a few days earlier, I can attest to the heat of Queensland in summer. I once made the mistake of leaving the house without my shoes on. You can do that in NZ. In Queensland’s summer, despite the fact it was before 10am, the few hours of sun on the paved brick roads here was enough to cook my tender Kiwi feet. Nevertheless I’m looking forward to returning to the most beautiful country on Earth, NZ.

Although I am clearly biased because of my heritage I would suggest that the New Zealand landscape is one of the most spectacular in the world. With its vast rainfall it is one of the greenest countries and for those of you that have been lucky enough to go to or live in Ireland the North Island is fairly similar; except that in NZ you won’t ever see a stone fence. The South Island though is spectacular for skiiing as any skier or snowboarder will attest. As an Aucklander I should be careful though, there’s a tense rivalry between Auckland being the largest and commercial centre of NZ and the rest of the country. They just love beating us in the rugby and rub our higher salaries in our face.

Of course those well informed will remind me that the highest average wage actually occurs in Wellington, however I would suggest that the use of statistics can be misleading to the uneducated. The highest salaries actually occur in Auckland, it is supported by the leverage of the lower salaried worker no doubt. I was once told by a successful businessman with links to ‘old money’ that the key to business was employing people smarter than you to leverage their work. It is an unfortunate consequence of these seeming truisms that we may be led to forget the fundamentally binary nature of such generalisations. They cannot be true in every circumstance and most especially when more and more demand from employers create a demand pull inflation of the wage required to employ someone. Good old market economy. Can’t wait to get back to NZ.

I have a singletasking tip for you, and it’s an important one: Work like you’re on vacat

I have a singletasking tip for you, and it’s an important one: Work like you’re on vacation. Before you type up the smart-aleck response, “You mean don’t work at all?” let me explain. I mean work like you’re taking a working vacation. If you’re a full-time remote worker, you probably know the kind of focused working vacation I mean. Sometimes, you can pull one off without your employer even being aware that you’ve taken a vacation at all, if you’re experienced in the art.

The key to a successful working holiday? Good time management and prioritization skills. Having fun and distracting things, settings and activities all around you has a way of throwing what needs doing and what can be put off into sharp relief. The result, for me at least, is a kind of highly motivated tunnel vision that has me blowing through high-priority tasks in half the time I would normally take.

Since you’re not actually always on vacation, how do you replicate the effect in order to trigger task triage? The solution is to bring back the motivation, if not the exotic locales.

Fill Your Day With Extra-Curricular Activities

When planning out your work week, add in as many fun, after-work activities as you can manage. This might mean some personal blogging, joining a book club that meets regularly, participating in regular Twitter chat groups, or playing recreational league sports (I’ve just signed up for dodgeball, which should be interesting).

Not only will crowding weekdays with fun, social or active events and activities cut down on artificial work task exaggeration (you know that it shouldn’t take you three hours to finish that weekly status report, for instance), it’ll help you stay happy and healthy, too.

Knock Off Early

Take your usual workday end-time, and subtract two hours from that. No matter what the status of your work at that time (emergency priority stuff obviously excluded), you’re forbidden from doing anything else, professionally speaking. If all goes well, the perception of being under a time crunch will result in faster, more efficient work habits, and you’ll have no choice but to leave the less important stuff for another day.

Plan Day Trips

If an imaginary time crunch alone isn’t doing it for you, try peppering your week with mini-vacations. These could be things as simple as a shopping trip, or as complicated as a late afternoon jaunt to the zoo with the kids.

My own personal favorite mini-vacation is a trip to the Royal Ontario Museum here in Toronto, where the best time to visit is early in the morning to midday on weekdays, since you get to avoid the tourist crowd. I’m only halfway through the ancient Greek pottery exhibit, so it’s sure to motivate me to stay focused on the essential in order to give myself some extra leisure time.

Welcome (and Plan for) Personal Life Interruptions

If you have a home office, this might be something that’s unavoidable anyway, but blocking off a good chunk of floating time for unscheduled interruptions from your family and friends is not only a wise work/life balance move, but could help quiet professional distractions.

By giving domestic concerns a higher priority on your to-do list, you’ll have to create room by bumping low-priority work tasks, which will hopefully result in having less to think about during those hours when you are in dedicated work mode.

Working should never feel like a chore, even when you’re not treating it like a vacation, but these tips might help stave off the inevitable creep of bad habits, procrastination, boredom and, worst of all, unmanageable multitasking, which we sometimes fall into just for the sake of feeling busy. Filling your schedule with leisure activities gives you the benefit of feeling busy without having to generate extra work for yourself. It also helps give you an excuse to ignore low-priority distractions and keep a sharp focus on the important things. Plus, who doesn’t love a working vacation?

To be in with a chance to become a £10 Pom you need to follow these simple steps and you’ll soon be on your way.

1. Get yourself a Working Holiday Visa
The £10 Pom fares are intended for people who are serious about having one hell of an adventure on a working holiday in Australia, so you will need to have a Working Holiday Visa to be eligible. You can apply for a visa at any of STA Travel’s 44 branches, or click here to buy it online.
Eligibility: You must be a UK passport holder aged between 18 and 30 years old inclusive.

A working holiday visa allows you to live and work in Australia for a period of 12 months. You can work for one employer for a maximum of 6 months, so it gives you time to travel around Australia topping up your funds as you go.

There are all sorts of jobs available so you will definitely find something to suit you. Click here to see what kind of roles are on offer right now.

2. Register online
It’s not essential to register online, but we suggest that you do. It means that you’ll be eligible for one of the 5 extra ‘golden tickets’ to be drawn once the first 145 £10 fares are sold out.

3. Get to one of our selected promotional branches by 8am on Wednesday 5th August.
There will be eight special STA Travel branches around the country selling the £10 fares on the day. They will be the only branches where you can get them and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Australia is a country and a continent at the same time. Often its size is underestimated. You could

Australia is a country and a continent at the same time. Often its size is underestimated. You could almost say that areas other than the cost stripes are abandoned.
However, backpacking through Australia I can say that it is a very diverse country with beautiful beaches, green mountains and many areas of big desert. It is especially appealing to backpackers who are commonly attracted by wonders of Australia!
It is easy to travel around, easy to find a job and easy to get to know nice people. As it is so far away (24h by plane) it is not really worth going there for only one week or two. But whenever you get more than that period of time free I would recommend a trip to Australia!!

In the following article I will show you some of my self taken pictures. If you want to know more about Australia, visit LONELY PLANET´s website.

These were some of the highlights we saw in Australia. But the country has got so much more to offer, it is unbelievable. To experience that you should go and check it out yourself… !!!

As I am based in Australia I cannot assess the standard of players that register with The Australian

As I am based in Australia I cannot assess the standard of players that register with The Australian Soccer Experience (www.ozsoccerexperience.com).

This means that players need to either need to be established at a level / in a league that the recipient clubs are familiar with OR assessed by a third party.

Established level/leagues

It is easiest for me to compare the level of clubs in the english non-league system with clubs in Australia simply because I am most familiar with it. For the time being this may mean that a player who is good enough to play misses out because he is playing in the Belgium 3rd division or similar.

This is obviously both a shame for me and the player but for this to be a successful venture I need to generate a reputation for placing players that are better than the clubs local intake.

My intention is to charge players for verifying the level that they are playing at which in turn will act as a seal of approval for clubs looking for players…but ultimately it will still be up to the clubs to identify the players they want to bring over.

For charging purposes it is more important that I can verify the level of the player/check out the players references so that players can make an informed decision…than it is to find the best players available. References are the key thing I look for.

To that end I will actually accept anyone onto the site that can provide a reference – hence my relationship with Unearthed UK (www.uneartheduk.co.uk).

“Unearthed UK Sports Management are here to help all footballers of the United Kingdom. If you can play football and want help in reaching your potential, then it is our aim to help you to reach your footballing career goals whether it be through trials with a professional club, gaining a scholarship to study at an American University, playing in Australia or playing for your local amateur or semi professional club. “

If a player wants to come to Australia, but does not have acceptable references, they are asked to attend one of Unearthed’s assessment days with a gaurantee that the Unearthed assessment will automatically qualify them to register with our site.
