This was a piece I wrote while on work experience at The John O’Groat Journal at the tender ag

This was a piece I wrote while on work experience at The John O’Groat Journal at the tender age of 15:

Come on, Ghana! And Italy… and Sweden…

Despite the unfortunate absence of Scotland, the World Cup finals in Germany are capturing the imagination of us all – with one or two exceptions. Sam Hendry asked a number of prominent local people which team, if indeed any, they are supporting.

WITH the 2006 FIFA World Cup now under way, many of you will undoubtedly be glued to your television screens. With First Minister Jack McConnell already having voiced his opinions on the biggest football tournament there is, we thought it would be a good idea to ask around well-known local people and see who they will be cheering on.

Carroll Buxton, the chief executive of Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise, said: “I will be trying hard to avoid the World Cup whenever possible – although it is very difficult and I already know more about Wayne Rooney’s foot than I ever wanted to. As a result I won’t be supporting anybody in particular. However, I would wish the English team all the best and hope that the tournament passes with no incidents on or off the pitch!”

Carroll added: “Based on my in-depth knowledge of form I think that Brazil have a pretty good chance of winning but it would be nice if a team like Trinidad and Tobago surprised everybody.”

Another person that will be supporting a smaller team is Highland councillor Bill Fernie, who runs the Caithness.org community website.

“I am looking to see Ghana doing well,” he said. “It would be great to see a country with the same fighting spirit as Scotland come through, and if we are not there this time around then a fearless team that also has lots of skill and will to win like Ghana would be a great boost to that continent.

“They have a big football fan base in the country and a win in the World Cup would be a great boost to youngsters interested in sport.

“Realistically, I expect Brazil to come through or at least be in the final.”

Peter Budge, the newly-appointed manager of Wick Academy FC, said he was too busy with preparations for the forthcoming Highland League season to give much thought to the World Cup.

However, he did say: “You always fancy the Brazilians to do well, with the flair they have, and I think Argentina won’t be far off. Germany will be strong, on home soil, but defensively it looks as though they will have problems against some of the top sides.”

Ian Scott, the famous Wick artist now based in New York, had this to say: “Because I’m a European living in New York City I’ve recently been approached by all sorts of people for my opinion on the World Cup. They call it soccer over here! They have their own version of ‘football’.

“I’m afraid to say if they hadn’t come and asked me I would have been unaware that it was even going on. An Iranian gent in a shop told me yesterday he hoped his team would lose, because he hates the present regime and won’t go back until they’re out. A Ukrainian barber told me he will only watch it to see Russia defeated. Obviously it is stirring great passions.” (The Ukranian gentleman might be pleased to find out that Russia didn’t even make it into the finals!)

Ian added: “However, I have never watched a football match in my life. Being forced to play it in Pulteneytown Academy and Wick High School got it out of my system. I did glance at it yesterday for a minute and saw only shapes of figures on green.

“I’m afraid my passions are elsewhere. I’ve always looked on these events as war by proxy, and nothing these people have said to me in New York has adjusted my viewpoint.”

Freelance journalist Iain Grant, who provides summer football coverage for the Groat and Courier, said: “When Scotland miss out on qualifying – and that, worryingly, is becoming a bit of a habit – I tend to plump for our nearest and dearest neighbours… to the north.

“Geography has never been a strong suit but I’ve been assuming that is Sweden.

“As to who will win, I think you’re looking at a side that has won the thing, at least twice – which, of course, rules out France. For what it’s worth, my tip is Argentina, with first-timers Ghana an outside bet to reach the last four.”

With his Italian family background, long-established Thurso photographer Mario Luciani is following the Azzurri. He and his wife Molly also like the look of the Brazilians.

Mario said: “We do watch the football and, naturally, we support Italy. If they don’t win we will then go for Brazil, who are the favourites.”

Also adding his view was Jamie Stone, the Liberal Democrat MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.

He said: “Although I am useless at the game – always the last one to be chosen by either of the two captains when the boys in my class at Tain Academy were split before we played football – I am very interested in the World Cup.

“In the office sweep in the Scottish Parliament I have drawn Germany and er, er… Togo. So I guess I am supporting them. Maybe.

“I shall, however, also be supporting England – but I shall be turning the commentary volume right down, as the English commentators banging on about the good old days of 1966 can sometimes be a bit much. Still, I think they’ll win.”

However, there are those who aren’t taking much interest in the World Cup.

Dr Fiona Grant, the rector of Thurso High School, said: “I am following the World Cup because my son is mad about football so I have little choice in the matter. I am not supporting any team in particular.”

Even less enthusiastic was Rob Gibson, SNP MSP for the Highlands and Islands, who said: “I am not watching the World Cup on TV. You can’t ignore the coverage on the news. No doubt I’ll be on holiday when the final is on, so I may watch it.

“I have told others who ask me ‘who do you support?’ that I’ll be outside if it’s sunny. Watching sport is not one of my hobbies.”

But he added: “May the best team win. And may the UK media respect supporters who choose any team they fancy for whatever sporting reason.”

Finally, the Earl of Caithness said: “I am not really a football fan so am not taking much interest in the World Cup, especially as Scotland are not playing, and so will not be actively supporting any team. However, it would be very good for British sport if England did well.”

Personally, I will be supporting Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, and Sweden on the following Tuesday, and then I hopefully won’t have to care about who wins it thereafter.

FOR THE ITALIAN VERSION OF THE POST: HERE

All we go for "Sun, Beach, Love"

There are Countries, in the World, there is nothing to say about, being difficult even finding some triviality to comment on.

If you were already turning up your nose, then I’ll challenge you! Let’s list three distinguishing characteristics of the following Nations: New Zealand, Slovak Republic, South Korea

So, some of you have surely thought about the “Lord of the Rings”, while all the others remained silent, right? This is just the way it is: many places are not so popular.

This is not the case with Italy. My country is among the most widely discussed, criticized, mocked and stigmatized, but at the same time envied, praised, hankered, and loved on all over the planet.

Few lands in the world arouse a similar avalanche of contrasting emotions, and have the same ability to be either love or despised so strongly.

Italy has beauty, history, and a galaxy of unique features both wonderful and tragic.

And what about the Italians?

Italians are those individuals who, because of either fate or choice or a mere damn luck, have to carry the weight of these beauty, history, features, wonder and tragedy.

Since ages they have always been put through clichés and prejudices, the most cruel and funny ones, like perhaps no other people on Earth.

Hence, I’m now addressing to foreigners: when someone shakes your hand and says: – “I’m Italian” – an universe opens in front of you, which can be filled with all the prejudices, the superstitions and beliefs you may have heard about the strange men and women from the Boot

(On the other hand, I’d expect from you a blank look if somebody would say: – “I’m from New Zealand, or Slovak Republic, or South-Korea” -).

The raising question is: what is true and what is false about stereotypes? Are they reliable, can you trust them, or they are merely urban legends without foundation?

This post is a short outlook on some of the most common stereotypes associated with Italians.

Five are discussed below as those that, in my humble opinion, are very close to the truth.

Nevertheless, I do hope to be able to write the same post about the Americans.

All in all, it’s less than one month before going to Richmond

Stereotipo: ITALIANS EAT TONS OF PASTA EVERYDAY

TRUTH: 70%

Bigoli, typical egg-made pasta from the Region of Veneto

For those allergic to the gluten, Italy might be a harsh Country to live in.

Something that truly breaks Italians’ heart when they are abroad, especially those ones not used to travel, is abstinence from pasta.

The pasta in Italy is a daily ritual of life, it means art, culture and tradition. The grannies who wake up early in the morning to prepare the home-made pasta fresca, between clouds of flour and turning the rolling the pin all around, do really exist.

What in truth many foreigners cannot get is that “pasta” doesn’t mean merely “spaghetti” and “tortellini”. There are hundreds of regional specialties and an enormous amount of seasonings to try with. The possibilities for varying your flavour are (almost) infinite, and all of them are so unique and delicious.

It’s hard to get tired, unfair to blame us. Rather, envy our grannies.

STEREOTYPE: THE MOST WIDESPREAD RELIGION IN ITALY IS SOCCER

TRUTH: 90%

The triumph in the World Cup on the 9th of July 2006 was not the biggest thrill of my “sporting” life. Schumacher and Raikkonen’s Ferrari gave me many more stronger ones.

But I’m gonna remember that night my whole life. Because it was an explosion of collective joy, irrepressible, unstoppable, never seen before in my Country. A raving and frenzied celebration, in which truly all the people run down the street to celebrate and dance crazily until dawn. An orgy of collective bodies hugging, singing, and rolling together. Amazing.

It really goes this way: Italians are not Catholic (if some claim he/she is, often behaves hypocritically). The true Faith is soccer.

Unsurprisingly, over 70% of Italians declare to be supporters of some soccer club.

The victory in the World Cup has been the most remarkable expression of homeland pride and national unity since… the victory in the World Cup of 1982.

I played my part too. My time of maximum football fervor exploded during the World Cup USA 1994. The one we lost in the final after penalties, against Brazil. And I’m somehow truly convinced it’s better to loose with Men such like Roberto Baggio than winning with beasts such like Materazzi.

In this video a glimpse of Naples in the night of the World Cup’s victory. (I’ve chosen on purpose the most passionate of Italy!).

TRUTH: 70%

Ours is the show of a body that speaks, vibrates, throbs, moves feverish. Stretching hands and arms keeping on twisting. Passionate and theatrical: those Italians who are prey of a strong emotion, either joy or anger, are unable to refrain, exploding in a gesture that probably has no parallels in the world

Just try to stop and ask for a direction. My Country-fellow will accompany the information at least with large gestures of the arm.

The reason for such a peculiar way of communicating may have different explanations. Such like the fact we are “Mediterraneans”, sensitive, impressionable and excitable.

Maybe. But I do prefer another one.

Italy is a Promise Land for artists, inventors, painters, sculptors, architects. In one single word: makers. We are creators and manipulators of the surrounding reality, with our hands, with our sweat. Hence, the need to express ourselves as if we really wanted to grasp and disrupt the real world.

However, does an Italian body-language really exist?

In the very rare clip below, excerpted from an Erasmus in Finland, Berkley’s Professor Matteo Brunelli is teaching a foreign audience. (You can skip the final par showing a Mexican girl trying to speak Finnish)

TRUTH: 80%

Italian Fashion

Italians, especially the Italian girls, are extremely fashionable. Style, neatness , elegance. Plus, also and above all, brand.

You won’t see us with a single messed hair, any clashing nuance, or any slovenly detail. Just go to the main squares of the city-centres on Saturday afternoon or to the clubs on Friday night, but even go to the libraries and to many university faculties: you’ll notice plenty of boys and girls who look like on-sale products of the star system.

Here the care of your appearance is meticulous, but at the same time effortless and spontaneous. We do that with great naturalness. In very truth, it is far less morbid and manic than it might seem.

The Italians hold the unshakeable conviction of being the most stylish people of the whole Universe. Nevertheless, the examples given by tourists and foreign travelers have contributed, year after year, to remove all doubts about it: the flighty combinations of colors worn by the Brits, or the white socks on Germans’ feet (now the Czechs’) have left unforgettable memories you may still hear about.

So much love for him/herself, however, can sometimes be a little odd, especially concerning guys. An Austrian girl once told me: – “Italian guys are very good-looking. Such a pity they all look like a bit gay” -.

And then, unfortunately, there is the tamarro. An weird creature, widespread in the cities of central-south and in the northern countryside. You may be able to recognize it immediately, since it looks like escaped from a zoo or, at worst, from a lunatic asylum (where there were still asylums).

The tamarro has no elegance, neatness or style. But, alas, in an attempt to acquire them, it stuffs him/herself with fashion brands without any rational logic. The tamarro’s typical look, besides a disturbing hairdo and an overdose of sun-lamps, consists of a belt with the huge D&G brand well shown up, Rich jeans worn to the knees, massive sunglasses covering all the face. Often you may see some abnormal piercing or some tribal or gothic tattoo (although the tamarro has no clue of what means “tribal” or “gothic”).

It’s not been yet discovered yet what a tamarro eats, but scientific studies have proved it is absolutely harmless to humans. (Referring to the previous topic, a conversation of a tamarro is made of 1 grunt and 3 mimic or gestures).

Italy is not a land of poets, saints, sailors, and Berlusconists. Italy is a Country of mums, and sons/daughters of mamma.

Let’s consider a manager who returns in his/her hotel-room after a business meeting, a student who goes back to his/her flat after an exam, or a soccer-player who leaves the stadium after a match, or even a Mafia’s hitmen who runs back to his hiding place after committing his crime. All these characters have something in common: while I’m writing, they are, all of them, calling mamma at home.

The Mother is the pillar of Italian society, the backbone, the Northern Star. The strength of the relationship mother-son/daughter cannot be detected anywhere else in the world.

She is an immanent presence, permanent and transcendent. Even when, apparently, she’s not around you can feel her watching you. Because she is thinking about you, dreaming of you, she’s talking about you with other people. You definitely feel her gaze on you.

One of the phrases that you may often hear by Italians, especially in sinful situation, is: – “If my mum could see me right now!” -. That is: get angry, Guardian Angel. But, please, don’t tell mum.

And it’s true that, in some way, Italian kids’ childhood is extended indefinitely. Every time going back home, they will find their favorite dish, the shirt ironed, the bed tidied up with clean sheets.

Therefore, I feel forced to say again what I claimed before: it’s hard to get tired, it’s difficult to blame us. Rather, envy our mums.

Nevertheless, so much love might lead to objectively questionable behaviors. Only in Italy, mamma buys the underwear for her teenage sons.

Yeah, I’m that girl at gatherings, parties and functions. I chat it up.

I’m not quiet and I don’t sit and wait for someone to come talk to me.

I’ll talk to a rock if I have to. I like to converse. I like to learn about people. I like to ask questions. I like to hear people speak. I’ve been known to spark a lively debate in public. Sue me.

But, one thing I am learning about myself is that the conversation is not always “even”. There has been 6 separate incidents in the past month where i wrote a post and surprised some close friends and family with stuff I wrote about. I got “I didn’t know that about you!” and “Wait….how did I not know that?!”

I’m learning that being a conversationalist sometimes limits discussion about ones self. Not that tons (or anyone) is super interested in me or what I’m all about. That’s not what I am saying. But I have realized that I love hearing about people and their lives so much that I generally ask question after question and rarely mention anything personal about myself. Obviously there are exceptions, such as close friends and intense personal conversations. But on the whole, I would rather hear about someone else and their experiences than speak about myself. I’m sure this is the same for most people.

Which lends itself to me hearing alot, “I didn’t know that!” and “I wouldn’t have guessed that.” Even before I blogged I would get this frequently.

I feel guilty about it sometimes, actually. Like I should draw a time-line graph for people (like the ones you drew in 4th grade, outlining the presidents of the United States or when the California Missions were established) of my life and what I have actually done, so they don’t seem surprised.

So here are some high and low points for you to know. And if you couldn’t care less, than you prove my point that it is much more interesting for me to hear about YOU than for you to hear about me. Thus validating the fact that I don’t bring picture albums to each party to highlight my existence.

But now you can’t say I never told you .

*I was a nanny for 9 months. For two kids. I almost had elective, irreversible surgery to avoid child-bearing, as a result.

*I met George Lucas.

*I have a learning disability. I have dyslexia. I can’t take scantron tests and am considered a “disabled student” when applying to Universities.

*I was a professional gift-wrapper.

*I smoked for almost a year of my life in my late teens. (Insert sobs of disappointment from my parents, extended family, past Sunday school teachers and extremely conservative friends) I stopped because I knew that If I didn’t sooner, rather than later, I would be addicted for life. And it kills your body and ruins your clothes and is just wrong. I was super convicted about it. But I loved it. And I still miss it when I smell cigarette smoke. Hey, we all have had a vice at one time, right?

*I am pretty legalistic when it comes to church attendance. It isn’t why I wake up each Sunday morning and go, but it’s certainly motivation.

*I was a personal shopper.

*I get really sick of being lumped in with the stereotype that Christians are radical, judgmental and uneducated. And the fact that people use that stereotype as a reason not to believe or dismiss biblical teachings. Oh, and when people think they are being funny and make fun of my salvation because somehow it attaches me to Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, Bill O’Reilly or any other uber-right wing conservative. Because I must love all of them SO MUCH.

*Sadly, I think that the growing trend is that Christians are the biggest liability to the Christian faith. So, I am dead set on reversing that.

*I think that my biggest pet peeve is when people are late.

*I like snow globes.

*I traveled to the World Cup in 2006 with a friend and my husband and it was an amazing trip. I don’t understand people that don’t like to travel.

*I drink 3 day old coffee. I don’t like to waste it.

*I went on a missions trip to Guatemala that changed my life in several ways.

*I like to write messages on mirrors and under stamps.

*I get air and sea sick.

*I secretly would love to start a game night where all we play is Bible Trivia (the 1980’s version), but know that my friends would laugh at me and not come. Maybe not Mary. She would wipe the floor with me.

So….

There you go. Thrilling, wasn’t it?

Is there anything about you I should know? Surprise me.

Rating 1/5 Stars

Mari gua rekap dua film pertamanya…

Sampe akhirnya mereka masuk final UCL.

TAPI, nih gua kasi tau apa isinya Goal 3:

It's...so..beautiful. Must..touch..it.

4. Si Tompel ketemu cewek dan pacaran.

5. Si Tompel MATI di pertandingan (ketebak banget).

6. Si temennya Tompel ketemu mantan pacarnya yang udah punya anak. Dan akhirnya kawin.

7. Inggris gak menang World Cup. Mexico gak muncul di layar.

8. SANTI PATAH TANGAN DAN KAGAK MAIN DI WORLD CUP!!!! Santi cuma nonton si Tompel dan temennya main. DIA BAHKAN GAK DICERITAIN SAMA SEKALI!!

Apa-apaan ini?!

Argghh!!!

Andy Morahan, film lo bener-bener MURAHAN!!! Pantesan ini film straight to DVD!!

[menghela napas..]

Oke…

Oke….

Tenang… kontrol napas…

Argh, fuck it! Mana silet dan Baygon gua?!

[end rant, slits throat]

Fanfiction//Football Slash//Zidane and Materazzi//World Cup 2006

My ball would not have been intercepted if not for Materazzi. He stayed close to me, not giving me any movement. Being this close to him, I could feel the heat of his body against mine.

He grabbed my shirt, holding onto it and me at the same time. There was no way I could have made a move with his sweaty paws all over me.

“You want my shirt? I’ll take it off for you after the game,” I mocked him. Did he think no one would notice his stupidity? How could this amateur be a professional footballer? Furious, I stalked away from the fool. This was my last game before retirement and I was not going to let it be ruined.

“I prefer the whore that is your sister,” he shouted after me.

The minute my head slammed into his chest, I knew it was all over. I didn’t care anymore. I didn’t have to tolerate such stupidity from an amateur who couldn’t even play a real game without cheating.
