GOOOOOOOL! Did you know that soccer (ahem, football) is the most widely viewed sporting event in the entire world? In 2010, Spain beat the Netherlands and claimed the FIFA World Cup championship for the first time in history, prompting an wildly enthusiastic response from fans in the country’s capital. In 2014, the action will take place in Brazil, followed by Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. While the host countries are ecstatic to have been chosen, some have expressed doubts about their level of preparedness, and others are even questioning the integrity of the FIFA executive committee.

Berlin – Weltmeisterschaft (2006)
Цвет-opolis (Svetopolis)

Berlin – Weltmeisterschaft (2006); Ink on Water Color (5″ x 4″) In the Spring Semester of 2006, I studied abroad in Lüneburg, Germany.  It’s still hard to believe that over 6 years have passed since I was there.  My time there was a great experience, and I met some great people while I was over there too. I was also lucky to be in Germany at the same time as the World Cup (Weltmeisterschaft) was going to be played there.  Before I left for Europe that previous December, my friend, who was going to be studying in Spain that same semester, and I put in to get tickets for the World Cup.  We really lucked out–just 4 weeks before the start of the World Cup we were selected to get tickets!  (Well, my friend wasn’t so lucky, because, before we knew we had received the tickets, he changed his flight to come home 2 weeks early, so he missed the tournament–but we were able to transfer the ticket to my friend who I studied with me in Germany.  Anyways, th

World Cup Tracker - The Road to the 2014 World Cup

Oceania 2nd round: GpB –  Fiji 0-1 New Zealand   GpB –  Solomon Islands 1-0 Papua New Guinea   Favourites New Zealand made hard work of Fiji in their opening World Cup/Nations Cup game, edging to a 1-0 win. The All-Whites got off to a dream start when Tommy Smith put them ahead on 8 minutes when a free-kick was parried into his path by Fijian keeper Simione Tamanisau. New Zealand, who were the only unbeaten team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, missed several opportunities to extend their lead and had to hold on in the second half Fiji began to dominate in the heat of Honiara. In the later game, hosts the Solomon Islands beat Papua New Guinea 1-0, thanks to another early goal.  Benjamin Totori’s 5th minute strike was enough to give them the points. Deaths Expected to Result in Ban
NotTheFootyShow

Indonesian football is walking a tightrope at the present time, and many predict FIFA to intervene in the next few weeks and suspend it from International football and even from FIFA itself. With the world’s attention on the European Championships this could be the ideal time for FIFA to step in and suspend Indonesia, as it would be a move that would be lost in the columns written about the tournament in Poland and Ukraine; Therefore avoiding negative publicity for the games governing body. FIFA has long had concerns over corruption allegations within the game in Indonesia. They have also not been impressed with the ongoing leadership tussle of the PSSI, the body running football. The country was also at the centre of a match-fixing investigation into their 10-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Bahrain in February. What has now intensified the pressure on Indonesia is the death of three fans at the rebel league, Super Liga’s fixture between Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung at

2014 World Cup Qualification – Africa Round 3
Sports Equilibrium

African World Cup Qualification has just started Round 3 today, and it starts in interesting fashion! With 40 countries vying for 10 spots to advance to the next round, broken into 10 different 4 Country groups, the winning side from each group advances to a home-home playoff for a trip to Brazil. Since there are so many teams, I won’t list them all now, but I will highlight the groups currently in action today. The first group, is one of my highlighted groups. This is Group D. I highlighted it because two of the top 5 African Teams are in this group, and that will make this interesting, since only one will advance! Ladies and Gentleman – Group D Country (World Rank)(Africa Rank)[W-D-L] points Ghana (22)(2) Zambia (40)(5) Sudan (113)(31) Lesotho (163)(43) This is definitely going to be interesting. Can Sudan or Lesotho play spoiler to the powerhouses? Can Zambia upset Ghana? It will be interesting to see how things play out here. But honestly, I feel like Ghana will stay in

June 2012 World Cup qualifiers: Oceania
Picture of Football

Doesn’t this bring back memories? Australia were, for 20 years, forced to play in Oceania and then play off against some mysterious opponent for the right to be in a World Cup. In that time, some heartbreak, some embarrassments, and some dubious records were set along the way. However, there were times when players and coaches just didn’t get it right. In truth, Australia and New Zealand would have been much better served by staying in the Asian qualifying zone that had been the case up to 1982, but no… politics had to come into it. In 2006, Australia became a member of the AFC and left Oceania to be the province of New Zealand. For football in New Zealand, this has had good consequences coinciding with the success of Wellington Phoenix. For once, the powers that be allowed the Kiwis to play off against an Asian opponent, and voila, they made it into a World Cup for the first time since 1982 and shocked the world along the way. That New Zealand were able to beat Bahra
