Oz Bayldon, who runs The White Lion on Streatham High Road set the world record for the highest live gig in 2005 when he and his band played to a hundred or so mountaineers 5,545 metres up Mount Everest. He’s since set the world record for the longest gig (44 hours non stop), however both of these have since been broken. Clearly not one to accept defeat he has decided to make a second attempt at the highest ever gig next year when he will climb 6475 metres up Mount Mera in Nepal. watch the video below to learn more about it.

I’d hoped they’d have finished building it by the time I cycled past it this Sunday, but I guess the worlds biggest Christmas Tree isn’t something that can be rushed. Still, just in case you’re interest in the progress they have made since last week, here’s a few more snaps! It has to be said that there are quite a few residents of Mexico City who feel that this isn’t the best way to spend money during an economic crisis with acute ongoing water shortages, but I myself like Christmas and Christmas trees! And I also feel that the worlds largest ice rink, which will be going up in the Zocalo any day now is a much more questionable project regards funding – exactly how much does it cost to keep an ice rink frozen on sunny, 20 to 25 degree, days in Mexico City?

To most people the idea of cycling the gruelling yet iconic 874 miles route between Lands End and Jo

To most people the idea of cycling the gruelling yet iconic 874 miles route between Lands End and John O’Groats is a major achievement. While it was exactly that, for me cycling the length of the UK is warm up for a challenge on an altogether bigger scale. My plan in a nutshell is in March 2012 to Cycle Around the World in 100 Days, this means pedalling a minimum of 18,000 miles in all and approaching 200 miles per day.

To give you some comparison the current record stands at 176 days and I think the average daily mileage was about 110-120 miles. So why do I think I can almost cut this record in half? It is built on my philosophy; You can Achieve anything if you are willing to mind to it. When I say this I don’t mean positive thinking, I mean specific level headed planning, preparation and precise execution.

With this challenge I want to spark peoples imagination, expand what they think they are capable of, provoke there thoughts and belief’s about themselves, push themselves further and this is not just on a physical level but on a mental, financial, social, vocational, spiritual and familial level.

Are you the type of cyclist that dreads the site of a hill loaming in the distance? I was, sometimes

Are you the type of cyclist that dreads the site of a hill loaming in the distance? I was, sometimes I still find myself dreading the upcoming hill, but as I read and learn about the art and skill of climbing hills this dread has become less and less.

I now become curious about what they might hold, how long will they be? How steep will they get? How long can I stay in the saddle?

Asking these types of questions for me builds an excitement, they challenge me to push myself a little further, to experiment with my riding style and find out if what I have been reading or watching will work for me.

Here are a few more ideas about how climb hills, some might work some might not, but anyway here they are. These ideas are from a book I have been reading a book Elite Performance Cycling, Successful Sportives by Garry Palmer and Richard Allen.

They start by mentioning that getting out of the saddle and powering up can deplete your energy and cause you to suffer from fatigue much earlier in the ride. They continue to say however, that if powering up means staying with a fast group of riders this could benefit you in the long run because riding in a group can result in major energy savings in the long run.

Longer climbs they say can be best dealt with by spinning at a cadence of 85-95 rpm in a gear that feels relatively easy, sustain this cadence and adjust your gears according to the gradient.

Becoming a skilful climber isn’t about fitness it’s more about teaching yourself how to pace your climbs, find a gear and pace you can maintain, don’t go at someone else’s pace as you may stick with them for the first few kilometres but if you blow up you can slip down the field very fast.

Finally do your homework on the climbs you will be up against, this will give you an idea of how to prepare in training and how to ride the event as a whole.

After yesterday´s comment on the fake world records in swimming, it is time to praise the arguably best swimmer in the world: Michael Phelps. But not for his achievments in sports, which are without a doubt stunning, but for his athletisism and future thinking.

He also started in Berlin today but despite the drive towards new records, he decided to make a statement: Michael Phelps swam in casual, textil bathing drawers! What happened in his 200 metre individual medley race just proved yesterday´s point of view: Michael Phelps did not win the race! For anybody who is not as familiar with the world of swimming races, this is comparable to neither Nadal or Federer winning a Grand Slam in Tennis or Olympique Lyonnais not claiming the French football title (which happened last season). However, this shows the real athlete in Michael Phelps and he deserves to be praised for it. Whilst all other swimmers try to achieve one FAKE world record after another, he concentrates on his performances and not the performance of his swim suit. This will lead to an increased performance from next year when all his rivals will probably ask themselves why they are not as good anymore without the swimsuit. Phelps is not even bothered about it, he knows that the future of swimming will take place without scientific help and he will be the best again as soon as the battle for the best material is over. Therefore today´s headlines “Michael Phelps did not win!” are quite sensational because from next year, newspapers will save one-word-ink in their titles.

In the meantime other swimmers broke the world records number 15 and 16 only at the single weekend in Berlin! The media praise the athletes and they celebrate their achievements… or their swimsuits?

Not all the talking is over but tomorrow the action begins, I have 121 weeks to condition my body to be able to cycle 225 miles per day for 100 days.

6 weeks ago (26th Sept 2009) a friend and I cycled 677.5 miles in 6 days from Lands End to Fort William, this is the furthest I have ridden to date, before that my longest mileage in the saddle in 1 day was 112 miles in May of this year (2009) and 8 months before this I didn’t own a bike.

So the past year has been one hell of a journey for me and the next two and a half will be no different going from 112 miles for 1 Day to 225 miles in a day for 100 days. This may seem a daunting task but one thing that stops me from psyching myself out is that I thought 112 miles was a daunting task before I did it.

So this is where it begins Monday 16th Nov 2009, day 1 of the 121 week training program and here is what the 1st 2 weeks looks like.

Base Training Wk 1/4 Building Strength and Power

Today, six new World Records were set at the Swimming World Cup in Berlin. Astonishing news and unbelievable performances one might think but it is indeed just fake. Since some athletes started to use new swimming suits which do undoubtely enhance the athlete´s performances, the World Records keep coming in. This would not be a problem, would everybody be able to use the new suits and would they be allowed to use in the future.

But at the World Championships in Rome this summer, some athletes were allowed to use the new suits, others were not because they had existing contracts with other swimming wear companies. The results were obvious: Almost every World Champion swam in the new suit, the athletes using old swim wear did not have the same chances. But instead of permitting the athletes to wear the suit already at the World Championships and therefore preventing an unfair competition, the FINS (International Swimming Federation) decided that the new swimming suits are only illegal from January 2010. With the consequence that basically no new World Record which was set with the new swimming suit will ever be broken again, simply because it is not possible.

All we can until the end of the year is thus just to ignore the news of New World Records and look forward to the next year with fair competitions. And maybe the FINA even declares the World Records set this year to be fake!

Probably everyone would be more than happy to be the holder of one Guinness record. It’s not the case for Ashrita Furman, the man who holds more Guinness World Records than anyone else on the planet.

Ashrita Furman, aged 54, has spent the last 30 years of his life trying – and succeeding – to beat records. At the peak of his career, Furman held not less than 100 records at once and even today is not doing too bad, being the author of 98 global performance unmatched by someone else.

Ashram was the holder of 236 world records in his career and his nearest competitor in this mater has not owned more than 20. It all began when Furman was a child and browse thru the Book of Records. He began to dream that one day he will also appear on those pages, breaking a record.

He achieved his dream in 1979, setting a new world record executing 27,000 ” stellar jumps ” (with hands and feet spread in the air), in New York. Since then, he never stopped. Among his records are included pushing a car over a distance of 27 kilometers for 24 hours, translating and reciting a poem in 111 languages, all throughout the day, attending a 130 kilometers walk with a glass of milk on his forehead, and:

Splicing 27 apples in the air, with a katana, in 60 seconds
