What If? WWH

This What If? is one of the better What If? stories to come out including the Hulk.  The first story takes place at the end of WWH where the heroes are desperate to take out the Hulk in any way – and as Tony releases the laser from the satellites they find… it works and takes the Hulk out.  But it also kills the Spider Woman *Skrull Queen*.  This puts the very well fed Skrull Commander in charge – and he believes that the Hulk is the green prophet.  He believes that the Hulk’s actions are actually signs that are telling him now is the time to strike and to make the “blue planet” their new home.

And strike they do – they release a fury of attacks and kill millions – humans, heroes and mutants alike.  After a few months the Vision android returns to the site of the WWH final battle and finds Bruce.  He’s poisoned and just waiting to die.  The vision tells Bruce what has been going on, tells him that they could really use the Hulk’s help.  Bruce finally agrees and tears through the Skrull army as easily as he did the heroes in WWH.  As the Hulk takes out more and more the remaining heroes begin to gather and create an Army – they call themselves the Avengers and are preparing to take their planet back.

But the Skrulls have a plan of their own.  A spy.  A bomb – in the form of Giant Man.  See, the Wasp is actually a Skrull – and as Pym professes his love she reveals herself – and also reveals that Pym a living bomb and he detonates.  He destroys the remaining heroes – except the Hulk who summons the Surfer.  Hulk demands that the Surfer bring Galactus to devour Earth.  Surfer refuses… at first – but with a bit more urging from the Hulk the Surfer agrees.

The Skrulls don’t understand where they went wrong.  Why their new home, much like their old home, is being destroyed by Galactus.  But the Hulk does not perish along with his home world – instead Galactus tells the Hulk that his rage is perfect to become his new Herald.  The Hulk asks only to let him forget – and Galactus delivers.  The New Herald – the World Breaker!

I liked this story – but everyone seems to address what the Hulk did in almost destroying the Earth - but not one writer has addressed the fact that Reed, Stark, and the others were responsible for the Hulk wrath… but the story is still pretty excellent: B+

The next story is about What If Thor came back at the end of WWH?    Funny enough – it does address that Stark, Reed and others are to be held responsible - but it was really, really bad – one of those “happily ever after” kind of stories – one of those – let’s all help and get along and forgive everyone kind of endings.  I won’t bother going on longer than that about it.  Grade: D

The Short answer is – YES! I’ve just finished reading the third volume (Hulk no more) in Jeph Loeb’s run on the Hulk re-boot and I’m really not impressed.

The first edition of Hulk began with the murder of Abomination seemingly at the hands of Hulk, but Bruce Banner was locked up in a secure Shield facility following the aftermath of World War Hulk. We were quickly introduced to Red Hulk who was in fact the culprit of Abomination’s murder.

Over the course of the first volume, Red Hulk absolutely thrashes not only Abomination but manages to (with absolute ease) do numbers on She-Hulk, Iron Man, Thor (!) and he even knocks out Uatu the watcher, this is after smashing up a Shield Helicarrier in the process.

So there’s the first criticism, you simply can’t introduce a new character who casts aside Marvel powerhouses with such ease. Once Red Hulk had finished the demolition job on some of the strongest characters in Marvel-616 there was simply no-where for him to go.

The only interesting part of the whole Red Hulk story is the actual identity of ‘Rulk’, this was the question on everyone’s lips during the first few editions, but to be honest, I don’t think that anyone cares too much anyway.

The second volume saw Rulk kill a Wendigo, which in turn made the rest of the Wendigos (there’s more than one now?) decend onto Las Vegas and do battle with an escaped Bruce Banner (who has now assumed the identity of Grey Hulk?). The Wendigos manage to bite Grey Hulk who then turns into Wendi-Hulk (?). Moon Knight arrives on scene (?)… and on and on. You get the picture. When compared to the last few years worth of writing by Brian Michael Bendis, Loeb’s disjointed ramblings of Hulk seem as though they’ve been written by a 5 year old.

Unfortunately, the third volume was no better. It’s split into two parts, the first a really poor story of the Defenders (led by Hulk) against the offenders (led by Rulk). This is explained by a wafer thin plot of The Collector and The Grandmaster wanting to see the two groups fight (for no other reason than they can). The second part of the volume is basically how Rulk manages to totally separate Banner and Hulk (?).

This last part contains issue 600 of Hulk, and we were promised by Marvel that 600 would finally reveal the identity of Rulk. So did it? Did it bugger. We’re still in the dark and I’m loosing interest FAST. It seems as though each issue is written without considering any events that happened in earlier issues (why aren’t Iron Man & Thor going after Rulk? If Rulk is so powerful, how come the whole of 616 aren’t on his case?), it also takes no consideration in what is actually happening in the Marvel Universe. Secret Invasion and Dark Reign aren’t mentioned once, and they’re the two biggest events that have happened to 616 so why does Loeb insist on ignoring them completely?

As you can tell, I’m not happy. Hulk deserves a lot more than this, and he’s a character that when done well (Bruce Jones’ cracking run & Planet Hulk to name two), can get readers interested in one of the best of Marvel’s characters.

The plan now that a Red She-Hulk (?) has been introduced is for a crossover that will wrap the series, imaginatively named ‘World War Hulks’ (?). I only hope that a decent writer can pick up the pieces after this horrible run and get the Green Goliath back on his feet.

They sent him to another universe, they tricked him, and they lied to him. They sent him to another world, they claimed he would find peace but instead he found war. Planet Hulk is one of the best graphic novels I have read since the Watchmen, real talk bee! My man Jay let me hold it at work and I fell in love with the story. Basically it involves Reed (Bitch) Richard, Doc Strange, Black Bolt and Ironman. These 4 bitch niggas tricked the Hulk to leave Earth then BOOM sent him to another world where he would become a slave. On the new planet Hulk is very weak and must regain his strength over time, but we all know the angrier Hulk gets the stronger! If you into the graphic novel thing or not, It’s an all around good read. Oh yea IT’S THE HULK BEE!!!! HHTT APPROVED

Marvel's Handful of Heroes

I was supposed to post some of these Friday – but I didn’t have time – and I’m kind of glad I didn’t because I was able to score some more of these Saturday.  They have been popping up in select K-Marts and Wal-Marts – it’s strange how very few seem to have them in – but if you’re lucky enough to see these the great thing is you can make out most of the figures inside.  That makes it possible to try and avoid doubles as much as possible.  It’s not totally avoidable – but good enough.

So, there are forty separate figures – each one has three colors – a solid or matte finish, a clear or translucent and lastly a translucent infused with glitter or cosmic (or “sparkly”).  Most of the more popular characters have at least 3 separate variants.  For Hulk figures there is the classic, Gladiator (or Planet Hulk) and King Hulk (or WWH).  There is also a Red Hulk.

In a strange twist of fate I seem to have gotten all 3 of the Red Hulks but am still seeking out a few of the regular Hulks.  I think these little guys are pretty well done – and each package comes with 8 figures.  If you’re able to track these down certainly pick some up – tomorrow I will be featuring the Hulk villains available.

“WHO IS THE RED HULK?! THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN IS GOING TO TRY AND FIND OUT! GREEN HULK! RED HULK! SPIDEY! SECRETS REVEALED! A STORY SO BIG IT CAN BARELY BE CONTAINED IN THE INCREDIBLE 600TH ISSUE OF HULK! ALL THIS AND A STARTLING SURPRISE ENDING TO TOP ALL THE OTHER SHOCKING SURPRISES THIS HULK BOOK IS KNOWN FOR!”

I wanted to include Marvel’s original solicitation for this issue to illustrate how marketing gimmicks like this are more evil and alluring than the Dark Side of the Force and never to be trusted under any circumstance.  I also wanted to show you exactly what it was that sold me on the issue in the first place, a measly fifty-eight words that I will gladly kick my own ass for buying into when we’re done, here.  The point I’m trying to make is that it’s all too easy to believe the hype surrounding special event comics like this, but when companies are raising cover prices to all time highs it’s these kinds of comics that need to be scrutinized most carefully; especially if you’re going to show how something like this fails to deliver the goods.

The heart of this massive tome is the story by Loeb and McGuiness, told from the perspective of Ben Urich, the only reporter alive in the 21st Century who refuses to use a typewriter. In a scene that would make Woodward and Bernstein fall to their knees and cry, Urich is called to a meeting by a thoroughly paranoid She-Hulk and charged with the task of discovering Who Is The Red Hulk? Remember this point, because it’ll be important later on. Urich and Peter Parker (did I mention that She-Hulk specifically asked Urich to bring along a photographer? Wow, how convenient.) join She-Hulk and Doc Samson to infiltrate a government facility called Gamma Base. There, the group discovers that Marvel’s favorite angry head M.O.D.O.K. has reactivated the terrorist cell A.I.M., and that he may be receiving help from General Ross.  The revelation is interrupted though when Samson suddenly reverts to a Hyde-like version of himself and attacks She-Hulk. From there, things get complicated as Red Hulk suddenly appears from nowhere to beat on Spider-Man, while Banner suddenly awakens from his induced coma to turn into Hulk and throw down with his evil counterpart.

Sensing a trend here? Practically everything happens out of the blue for no apparent reason, other than Loeb wanting it to at that particular moment. He constantly fails to set up these moments in ways that justify their existence, and as a result they come off feeling shallow and self-serving. Remember how I said Urich’s goal was to find out who the Red Hulk was? Yeah, well, he suddenly decided not to. “If all you do is focus on the Red Hulk you’re going to miss the big picture”, Urich observes. Really? Looking at the solicitation, I thought the Red Hulk was the whole point! This discrepancy suggests that either Loeb deliberately misled his readers into shelling out five bucks for a cocktease, or he is losing the ability to tell cohesive stories that don’t rely on shameful misdirections and obnoxious slights of hand. Either way, your buying dollars would be better spent elsewhere.

Ich bin damals bei der Nummer 3 oder 4 ausgestiegen und bis auf das der Silver Surfer kurz eine wichtige Rolle gespielt hat, habe ich auch überhaupt nichts mehr von Skaar mitbekommen.

Gut so, denn auch dieser „Planet Skaar“ Akt langweilt mich. Skaar läuft in seiner menschlichen Form mit ein paar Kindern durch die Wüste wobei eines in einer idiotischen Szene von ner Klippe fällt. Rettung kommt, Skaar wird zum SKAAR, Einsatzfahrzeuge werden geworfen, Warbound taucht auf, langweiliges Geplauder, Hulk kommt. In der nächsten Ausgabe gibt’s dann wohl Vater-Sohn Fight. Doch der interessiert mich nach dieser Ausgabe wirklich nicht mehr.

Ich weiß nicht wirklich was Greg Pak mit diesem Planet Skaar Arc bezwecken will. Planet Skaar erinnert nicht nur vom Namen her an Planet Hulk / World War Hulk, sondern liest sich auch wie eine kleinere Kopie dieses Crossovers.

Selbst beim Artwork hat man sich mit Dan Panosian (der die erste Hälfte des Heftes gestaltet) einen Typen dazu genommen dessen Stil sehr an Romitas erinnert. Trotzdem ist Romita Jr. besser. Besonders der Auftritt des Warbounds sieht lächerlich aus…

Auch insgesamt fand ich das “roughe”, ungeinkte Artwork Ron Lims aus den ersten Ausgaben spannender als das hier. Das passte zu Skaar und der unwirtlichen Gegend Sakaar. Aber ok, man ist jetzt ja auch auf der Erde, viell. wurde der Inker auch nur genommen um die Unterschiede zwischen Erde und Sakaar aufzuzeigen.

Ich verstehe nicht warum man jetzt schon an World War Hulk verwendet. Das Crossover liegt noch nicht so lange zurück und so beliebt dass die Fans nach einem Dacapo lechzen würden, war das Event nun auch nicht…

Im Grunde genommen hat mir eigentlich jede der viel gescholtenen ersten Ausgaben mehr gefallen als die aktuelle Nummer. Das hatte noch was eigenständiges und es wäre interessanter gewesen wenn man Sakaar noch etwas länger am Leben erhalten hätte.

Kann ich überhaupt was gutes sagen? Hmm… Das Cover ist cool. Erinnert wieder an Conan.

Wer WWH toll fand, Action und den Hulk mag, der sollte einsteigen. Für mich ist das nichts.

WWH: Frontline es una miniserie de 6 numeros escrita por Paul Jenkins y dibujada por el español Ramón Bachs. Donde nos narra los hechos de WWH pero desde la perspectiva de los reporteros Ben Urich y Sally Floyd.

 Este par de periodistas, luego de investigar lo ocurrido en Civil War, se dedican a investigar el porque del regreso del gigante verde al planeta tierra y los motivos de su venganza, todo esto mientras tienen que lidiar con sus propios problemas personales, la competencia con Jonah Jameson y el enorme caos en el que ha caido la ciudad debido a la presencia de Hulk y sus aliados.

Frontline es una historia que no destaca en lo visual,  pero que brillla por lo bien escrita y por la calidad de su trama gracias al trabajo realizado por Jenkins y quiero hacer un enfasis en lo bien que realizaron la trama de Jonah Jameson con Sally Floyd, y como este primero se logra salir con las suyas.  Sin duda WWH: FL es un comic que no puedes dejar de leer y que mucho menos puede faltar en tu coleccion

en notiacias  casi importantes como la evolucion del virus de la infleunza, pues  me compre unos tenis como esos, primero pense que que ridiculos pero terminaron por gustarme estan con madre, son como una especie de iman para chicas indies pff ok no.

se suponen que son parte d euna coleccion con un concepto basado en el horóscopo chino, esos que me compre corresponde al  conejo que por fuerzas astrologicas resulta  que ese resulta ser  a mi signo zodiaca chino. wow!

en otras noticas igual de poco interesantes para el mundo, he estado viendo en telehit un  reality llamado  new generation se trata de elegir la proxima conductora del canal o algo asi, es  pedo es que hay bastantes chicas lindas. pero no mames a hay una de la que me enamore ( algo muy comun en mi es tener CRUSH imposibles con  chicas de la television) se llama natalia y wow me encanta la chica, probable mente no sea la de mejor cuerpo (de hecho es muy delgada) o las mas hermosa en el concurso, pero tiene una presonalidad que me gusta chingos, demasiado graciosa, divertida, loca, linda y tiene el cabello medio chino (ultimamente las de cabello chino me gustan mucho al igual que las pelirojas) yo siempre me fijo en la actidud de una chica fuera de la belleza por que hay cada tonta sin cerebro, me frikeo cuando la veo, de  hecho hace unas semanas mientras lo veia en mi departamento en  monterrey con mi hermano y mi amigo el benjamin, yo grite  aver callence  cabrones que ya  va salir mi novia. de hecho es mi gallo ( en este caso gallina) espero que gane, que se hagan las apuestas o que?

creo que me gusta por que se parece demasiado a una chica a la que llamare Z con la que sali hace un tiempo ( no solo fisicamente se parece)  de hecho solo salimos juntos una  vez, fuimos a ver  batman the dark knight, estubo bien raro por que  fue en unas vacaciones de verano y estaban por terminarse,  a ella ya la conocia y se me hacia lindisima  y pues la invite al cine, pero el probleme es que  en ese tiempo yo no tenia carro ( mi hermano lo habia chocado. gracias)y ella vivia un poco lejos, y pues le dije te invito al cine pero  pues no tengo carro asi que voy a ir en camion a tu casa y de hay nos vamos caminando al cine pense que diria que no pero pues acepto, llega a su casa caminamos al cine, llegamos tarde por que pues como toda mujer se tardo en salir y no vimos los primeros 15 minutos  de batman y con las ganas que queria ver la pinche jocker, y hay me tienen explicandole por que batman es muy chingon por que no tiene ningun poder ( el poder del dinero) discutiendo de superheroes con una chica, mientras gritaban en la sala que me callara, despues caminamos de regreso a su casa donde un loco/vagabundo intento atacarnos, por suerte el cine no  estaba tan lejos y pues nos quedamos platicando afuera de su casa hasta las 12 de la noche hasta que salio su hermana (que tambien era bien chida la chava) y que ya era muy tarde que su papa ya queir aque se metira, y  no mams  bien buena que habia estado la platica, total me despedi de ella, pero pues ya a esa hora no habia transporte publico y me fui  a la central de camiones total que el siguiente camion salia dentro de 40 minutos asi que pense no mames me voy a morir d e aburrimiento

 y ps me fui a un oxxo a comprar un jugo y una revista pra entretenerme y me compre un comic de  WORLD WAR HULK, tenia mucho sin leer comics, en  esa edicion le pinche hulk llega de un planeta donde los lanzaron los otros super heroes  y el wey regresa encabronado a la tierra  por que le  matan a su morrita y pues el que lo corrio  fue el iron man pues  llega bien sobres contra el y le da unos chingasos,-, bueno  estoy saliendo un poco de la historia creo,  pues lo mas raro de la historia es que ya no volvi a ver a esta chica no se que le paso anda de desaparesida espero que no le aya pasado nada malo-,   me dejo bien enamorado, pero ya lo supere  ya despues el amigo que me la  habia presentado  me dijo que ella queria con otro de mis amigos y pues pff me desilucione un poco pues.

Snappahead Commission

I am really into getting art lately – really into getting art from artists that I admire – but I get even more excited about getting art from amazing undiscovered artists.  I don’t know if “undiscovered” covers this artist here though.  His name is Chris Stevens and he goes by Snappahead on the Statue Forum.  He is responsible for some of the most amazing pieces to be seen on the forum.  He is well worth the price he asks.  He opens up his commission list and closes it when it fills (which happens pretty quickly) when he has enough to keep him busy for a month or so…  So I was VERY unfortunate to be one of the last people to get on the list.  I asked him for a Planet Hulk piece and he was more than happy to oblige.

When I got the scan of the work – my jaw just dropped – it’s that beautiful!  One thing – I did notice that my Planet Hulk was turned into a WWH – and I bet only a handful of people can tell why – but I noticed, and it didn’t matter – I was amazed at what this man can accomplish with a pen and ink!  I hope to get another piece from him very soon – I might go for a marker piece next – and maybe even get the Planet Hulk I asked for

Who else can tell why this is a WWH and not a PH commission?

     With World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, and the Amazon conflict out of the way, Incredible Hercules enters its fourth major arc, featuring the dangers of Dark Reign and Hera’s new plans to exterminate all of her family that she does not like.  Hera has inherited Zeus’ lightning after his death, and she’s compltely taken over the company that represents the Greek Pantheon’s power and interests on the mortal plane.  She’s also enlisted the aid of any willing to help, including Pluto (no idea why he’s not called Hades), the Huntsman, and Typhon of the Titans.  She’s also taking the world by storm, whether Norman Osborn and his new world order likes it or not.  And Hercules, Athena, and Amaedus Cho are trapped in the midst of this.  We also get a cameo from Aegis, the superhero who formerly received his powers from Athena.

     Since it is Dark Reign, Norman Osborn pops up everywhere.  But I really like how he’s appearing in this.  I especially find his line at the very end of the comic quite amusing.  This whole arc has me extremely excited, especially since it has the possibility of explaining Athen’s extremely bizarre motivations since Secret Invasion.  Hercules and Amadeus Cho continue to be characterized brilliantly, and Greg Pak and Fred van Lente handle Greek mythological characters superbly.  I’m also interested in how Delphyne will play a role in this arc.  Pak and van Lente love to mess with Hercules and Cho’s love lifes, so I expect it will be messy.  Dietrich Smith is added to the list of artists who would do well as the ongoing artist, but will probably be gone after this arc.  He’s probably the worst of the artists that have worked on this series, but that doesn’t mean he’s bad.  At any rate, this series is good, Greek fun, and I love it.

Les informo que eh tenido a bien(?) cerrar este blog debido a falta de imaginación y constancia para matener 2 blogs a la vez, en teoría uno para desmadre, frikerías, geekerías, etc. y otro para ondas mas personales. Pero voy a fusionarlos y digievolucionarlos en un nuevo y mejorado (?) blog, al que pueden entrar clickandole en la imágen de arriba.

     So, despite the issue of the art team, Final Crisis continues on, and in a week or so, it’ll be over.  We’ve got all three of the major artists, J. G. Jones, Carlos Pacheco, and Doug Mahnke doing the work.  And a ton of plotlines suddenly ram together, and we’ve got a shocking ending.  So what’s going on?  Well, Darkseid seems to have made the populace of Earth a literal extension of himself.  They are all Darkseid.  Why?  Perhaps because he’s so badly injured, because Orion left him off so badly in Countdown to Final Crisis (yes, continuity!), and Dan Turpin can only be so good a host.  Anyway, it’s in this situation that we find ourselves.  There’s also two kick-ass fights, with Shazam, Black Adam, and Supergirl versus Mary Marvel, and Tawky Tawny versus Kalibak.  And somehow, the good guys win both.  Go Tawny!

     So, that all makes sense.  And Batman is the one to deal the final blow to Darkseid at the cost of, well… his life.  Or at the very least a lot of time until he can escape multiple crappy lives.  And Superman carrying his body is just shocking.  But then I look at the other plotlines, and I’m more confused.  What was the purpose of the Brainiac 5 and Superman scene?  What does that have to do with anything?  What is Mr. Miracle trying to do?  Isn’t there no purpose behind his actions now that Darkseid is dead?  Same with the Flashes.  What did the Anthro/Kamandi/Metron scenes at the beginning of the series have to do with anything?  And who is Mandrakk the Dark Monitor, and why is he the final villain instead of Darkseid?  I assume the Multiverse is still falling apart because of him.  Many questions, to be sure.  The whole idea of the Black Gambit is really cool, and Nix Uotan seems to be taking his role as the new guardian of the Multiverse, appointed by Metron, trying to put everything back in its place.  Cool, huh?  My only complaints at this point are that I wish that the art was more consistent and that the plot was a smidge less confusing.  Aside from those, this is how to right an event book.  It’s better than Secret Invasion, World War Hulk, and dozens of other events in the last few years.  Grant Morrison is earning his title as one of the best comic book writers ever with these pages.

I suck.

I had this reasonably good review of Powers #26 written up. I had a nice breakdown about the story so far, why it was necessary to have a recap because of the months between issues, and all that. I was smart, witty, concise… I was awesome, people.

And then I somehow deleted it. Then I cried. Then I decided I did not have the energy to do it again, so now you just get my argument for why Hulk is totally justified in killing the entire Illuminati. I hope you’ll survive the disappointment.

Iron Man and his cronies decide that, through accidents and collateral damage, The Hulk is responsible for far too many deaths. They then formulate a plan to trick the Hulk into getting into a spacecraft and then sending him, against his will, to another planet.

Transporting a person against their will is known as kidnapping, by the way.

When the Hulk arrives on the – admittedly wrong – planet, he is beaten, enslaved, and forced to engage in fights to the death. Through skill, cunning, and exemplary leadership, the Hulk escapes his slavery and leads an army of former slaves to overthrow a tyrannical dictatorship and unite an entire planet in peace.

At the moment Hulk has finally attained the peace that he has sought his entire existence, the ship that the Illuminati used to abduct him explodes, not only killing his wife and unborn child, not only the residents of the city around him, but killing the ENTIRE PLANET.

Let me repeat that. They didn’t blow up a town the size of… I don’t know, let’s say Stamford, CT. They ANNHILATED AN ENTIRE PLANET!

The Hulk may have been responsible for alot of deaths, but I’m fairly certain he never destroyed an entire planet.

That’s not mass genocide, people. There’s not even a word for the scale of massacre for which Tony Stark is responsible.

Considering what was done to the Hulk because of the deaths he caused, considering the regulations that have been put on the entire superhuman community as a result of Stamford, is it even possible to go “too far” to punish the people that have done this to the Hulk and his people?

I’ve heard the argument that the Illuminati didn’t intend for the Hulk to end up on that planet or for the ship to blow up. The Hulk didn’t intend the deaths he caused. Robbie Baldwin and the New Warriors didn’t intend for the children in Stamford to die.

In fact, let me give you a scenario here. A bank robber is leaving the scene of a crime and hits a woman and her baby, killing both. Is that bank robber responsible for those deaths? I think we’d all agree that he is. So why would the Illuminati be any less responsible for the deaths caused by their kidnapping of the Hulk?

They’re not.

The Hulk may be unreasonable, he may even be a monster, but he admits that.

Tony Stark is an even bigger monster who tries to hide behind “The Public Good.”

Just another Lex Luthor who needs a beat down.
