The company reported a quarterly profit after one-time items that beat Wall Street expectations on the strength of its beef and pork businesses, but investors focused on the performance of its poultry operations, which came in well below that of rivals like Pilgrim’s Pride.

Donnie Smith, a veteran at the company who became chief executive last week, said in a conference call that the chicken business should improve in 2010, but added that the company would need to increase volume and do a better job of managing inventory.

“It’s important to remember that we significantly reduced inventory in 2009, so to keep up with current domestic demand, we’ll have to produce this year what we took out of inventory last year,” Mr. Smith said. “We’ll be doing what we should be doing, which is selling what we produce and not confusing the freezer with the customer.”

Earlier on Monday, Pilgrim’s Pride reported a quarterly profit, reversing a year-earlier loss.

Tyson reported a net loss of $455 million, or $1.22 a share, for its fiscal fourth quarter, ended on Oct. 3, compared with a year-earlier profit of $48 million, or 13 cents a share.

Excluding a good-will impairment charge for its beef business, Tyson earned 28 cents a share, beating the analysts’ average estimate of 26 cents, according to Thomson Reuters.

Revenue at Tyson rose slightly, to $7.21 billion from $7.20 billion. Analysts on average were expecting $6.88 billion.

Operating margins at the chicken segment came in at 1.2 percent, much below analysts’ forecasts.

Tyson expects the strength in its pork and beef businesses to continue in its new fiscal year and said that it saw a chance for the economy to improve in the last half of the year.

Tyson’s stock fell 19 cents, to $12.88.

Always a bad idea to team up with the Belgium’s, although once showed great pride in their Nation, have become zombified in their desire for a Super Europe.

Meet the President of Europe (Paul Belien, Brussels Journal, 2009-11-20)

I won’t plagiarise the whole thing just highlight a few snippets which are a damning confirmation of things to come.

To understand Herman, one must know something about Belgium, a tiny country in Western Europe, and the prototype of the EU. Belgians do not exist as a nation. Belgium is an artificial state, constructed by the international powers in 1830 as a political compromise and experiment. The country consists of 6 million Dutch, living in Flanders, the northern half of the country, and 4 million French, living in Wallonia, the southern half. The Belgian Dutch, called Flemings, would have preferred to stay part of the Netherlands, as they were until 1830, while the Belgian French, called Walloons, would have preferred to join France. Instead, they were forced to live together in one state.

Just f***ing marvellous. The European Project is just another extension of the Belgium Project.

Belgians do not like their state. They despise it. They say it represents nothing. There are no Belgian patriots, because no-one is willing to die for a flag which does not represent anything. Because Belgium represents nothing, multicultural ideologues love Belgium. They say that without patriotism, there would be no wars and the world would be a better place. As John Lennon sang “Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do, nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.”

Welcome to their idea of Utopia. The idealistic idiots think the EU stopped another War breaking out, when it was the threat of Nuclear Armageddon that deterred another major European war developing. And if man is not prepared to kill he is not prepared to defend his very existence. No excuse for going mental of course.

In 1957, Belgian politicians stood at the cradle of the European Union. Their aim was to turn the whole of Europe into a Greater Belgium, so that wars between the nations of Europe would no longer be possible as there would no longer be nations, the latter all having been incorporated into an artificial superstate.

For the love of God, I wasn’t even f***ing born then! And the gall of these fools to think that a European Military Bloc will just be handing out humanitarian aid is far from the truth. The Masters of the Universe do not just wish to unify Europe under one banner, but the whole world, by any means necessary.

Herman is like Saruman, the wise wizard in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, who went over to the other side. He used to care about the things we cared about. But no longer. He has built himself a high tower from where he rules over all of us.

And that last line just cracked me up in a sick way. To me, Rompuy looks like the Grinch or Golum and he not only has the looks but also the similar traits such as delusional tendencies, greed, bitterness and a hefty dose of vanity going by the rests of the article.

Family First senator Steve Fielding has used the negotiations over an Emissions Trading System to reveal that he was once touched on the bottom by climate change as a small boy, which is why he chose to ignore it.
The admission was made quietly but within earshot of a number of cameras who had been tipped off by the senator that he was about to ‘steal someone else’s thunder’.
“I wouldn’t like to upstage the huge job we have ahead of us here to kill off any hopes of curbing the effects of climate change,” he said, “but I remember it breaking into my bedroom via a sudden gust of heat and touching my bum… at that point I swore never to give it the satisfaction of knowing that I knew it existed, like any other paedophile.”
Fielding, who once dressed as a freckled white settler with a pitchfork ahead of the apology to the Stolen Generation, is known for performing cheap stunts to satisfy the two per cent of red necks who handed him a senate seat.
James Melville, from the Centre for Marginal Studies, said: “Poor Stephen, I don’t think he even knows what’s coming out of his mouth some days… Those are the kinds of nutjobs that can use The Bible to jusify having sex with pigs.
“I very much doubt he even knows how to spell ETS, let alone make a judgement call on it.”

SEATTLE — After a match that couldn’t be decided in regulation time, perhaps it was fitt

SEATTLE — After a match that couldn’t be decided in regulation time, perhaps it was fitting that the penalty kick shootout would also need a little bit extra. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando made two saves and Robbie Russell buried the winning kick in the seventh round of the penalty kick shootout, and Real Salt Lake won the first trophy in club history, defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy 5-4 after a 1-1 draw.

Penalty kicks became necessary after the two teams finished 120 minutes deadlocked. Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee converted in the first half to put a capstone on a period of Los Angeles dominance, while Robbie Findley did the same for Real Salt Lake in the second half.

The title is the first in Real Salt Lake history, while Los Angeles fell in their sixth MLS Cup appearance.

Los Angeles made two changes from the team that took the field against Houston in the Western Conference Championship. Chris Klein and Dema Kovalenko were dropped from the lineup at the last minute for Chris Birchall and Jovan Kirovski. Real Salt Lake came out with the same lineup that bested Chicago in the other final, with Yura Movsisyan retaining his spot in the starting lineup ahead of Fabian Espindola. Will Johnson, who was suffering from food poisoning, found himself in RSL coach Jason Kreis’ starting XI.

Sorry that the video is in spanish.

Both teams came out conservatively, with neither team committing players forward in attack. LA’s Birchall sat just in front of the back four in a holding midfield role.

The first half-chance came in the ninth minute, with the Galaxy’s Todd Dunivant crossing from the left in the vicinity of Buddle, but the forward’s headed ball didn’t threaten the goal.

Will Johnson picked up the first yellow card for impeding Landon Donovan’s progress in the 14th minute. Just a few seconds later, RSL’s Argentinean playmaker, Javier Morales, got caught on the business end of an aggressive David Beckham tackle and came up holding his left knee. After coming off the field for treatment, Morales attempted to play through but could not continue.

Kreis was forced to use a valuable substitution early, bringing in Clint Mathis in the 22nd minute. With Morales out, Los Angeles started to assert its will on the game.

Kirovski found some space from an Edson Buddle pass in the 25th minute, lashing a volley towards Nick Rimando’s goal. After blocking the initial shot, Rimando was able to gobble up the rebound to keep the game scoreless.

On the other end, Real Salt Lake created their first real danger through the speedy Robbie Findley. The striker challenged Gregg Berhalter in a one-on-one situation, but the LA’s veteran defender escorted the ball over the end line. However, Findley’s speed caused the Galaxy defense real worry. Los Angeles tried to negate RSL’s speed with a high defensive line, drawing Findley offside three times in the first half alone.

In the 28th minute, a Los Angeles corner kick bounced in the six-yard box before rebounding over the goal, with Omar Gonzalez getting the last touch. The first clear-cut scoring chance came in the 36th minute off a well-executed LA counterattack. Donovan fed a streaking Mike Magee on the left side. As he breached the RSL penalty area, the Galaxy midfielder took a touch and sizzled a low drive past Rimando’s far post.

Los Angeles continued to press with Donovan’s volley from an extremely tight angle going into the stands on the north side of the stadium. Another potentially dangerous situation was diffused by an offside call against Edson Buddle.

By this time RSL was reeling and perhaps unsurprisingly, the first goal final came in the 41st minute. With RSL’s defense scrambling, Beckham played wide to Donovan. Given time to survey the field, Donovan lifted a gentle cross to Magee, who finished neatly at the far post.

RSL attempted to answer back before halftime. Andy Williams served in an enticing free kick to the far post after Beckerman was fouled. Nat Borchers, fighting off Berhalter, headed the ball directly into the hands of Donovan Ricketts, but at least RSL had answered. In the last notable play of first-half stoppage time, Movsisyan controlled and volleyed high as RSL showed a fighting spirit going into halftime.

At the break, Kreis burned another substitution, throwing Ned Grabavoy into the fray for Johnson in an attempt to regain control of the midfield. He almost needed to use a third as Findley and Ricketts collided just minutes in the second stanza.

After a Los Angeles turnover, Movsisyan played Findley through down the right side. After a touch, Findley attempted to pass back to Movsisyan with Ricketts blocked the ball as the two players came together. The striker and goalkeeper stayed on the turf for about three minutes before play resumed, with both able to continue.

As the second half continued, Los Angeles played in a more defensive stance, content to concede possession to their opponents as long as they stayed in their own end.

Beckham got a chance to bend in a free kick in the 58th minute after a foul by Jamison Olave. His attempt from about 25 yards went directly into the defensive wall, which Beckham thought had encroached.

On the other end, Real Salt Lake had a penalty appeal turned down in the 60th minute. Some quick passing between Beckerman and Ian Russell found Movsisyan free in the penalty area. Birchall made some contact with Movsisyan, but not enough for match referee Kevin Stott to award a penalty.

Nevertheless, the play fired up the Claret-and-Cobalt and soon after, the equalizer came. After a Movsisyan shot was blocked in the penalty area, Findley latched onto the loose ball and put it home with his left foot. On the play, Ricketts was injured and had to be replaced by in goal by Josh Saunders. It marked the first time a goalkeeper had been substituted in MLS Cup history.

Real Salt Lake kept the pressure on, with Grabavoy finding Movsisyan streaking, only to have the striker’s shot fly out of play. This stage of the game belonged completely to RSL. In complete contrast to the first half, Beckerman or one of his cohorts seemed to win every loose ball in the midfield. Kreis looked to push the advantage with fresh legs, bringing in Espindola for Movsisyan.

Los Angeles pressed forward in its own right. During one possession, six white shirts laid in wait in the RSL penalty area for a series of Beckham crosses. Another injury used the last substitution. In the 89th minute, Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena was forced to bring in A.J. DeLaGarza for a cramping Omar Gonzalez.

Real Salt Lake had more chances to win the match in the latter stages of regulation, with a Mathis free kick from distance being plucked from the goal’s top corner by Saunders. Williams crossed in to the back post, with DeLaGarza just barely heading the ball away. After a long period of stoppage time, the match entered the 30-minute extra time period.

Real Salt Lake continued to control the match, with the midfield ably keeping possession. Grabavoy took a first-time shot from Espindola, which was knocked down by an LA defender. Findley’s quickness got him to the knockdown first, but a sliding DeLaGarza probably saved a goal with his legs. Findley nearly scored again in the eighth minute of overtime, skimming the net on the near side with a powerful effort.

Mathis touched that same side netting with a free kick, narrowly missing after Beckham awkwardly brought down Beckerman.

As the second overtime period got underway, Los Angeles took more initiative to get forward. But again it was the midfield quartet of Mathis, Grabavoy, Beckerman, and Williams who controlled the game as Beckham’s injured ankle seemed to hamper him. The English midfielder did have a chance in the 24th minute of overtime, swinging in another free kick that was punched away by Rimando.

In the end, neither team scored and the match went to penalty kicks. While six championship games have gone to overtime, only one other MLS Cup was decided on penalty kicks, when Houston bested New England in 2006. Neither side looked willing to bend early.

Beckham and Mathis converted the first round of penalties, followed by Berhalter and Findley. Rimando, who had made three saves in the Eastern Conference final, made the first big play, diving to his right to deny Kirovski. Saunders answered by saving Beckerman in a near carbon copy of the previous kick.

Donovan stepped up. Normally deadly in these situations, the LA captain’s shot went over the bar. Grabavoy seized the momentum with a coolly taken goal. Magee’s successful effort kept Los Angeles alive. RSL’s Williams calmly strode to the spot to seal the win, but Saunders dove left to make the save.

Now into the sixth round, Klein and Chris Wingert both tallied. Rimando came up with another big save on Buddle, leaving Philip F. Anschutz Trophy in defender Russell’s hands. This time the shot went in, going low to the left with Saunders diving the other way. Russell immediately dropped to his knees as Rimando and the rest of the squad raced in to create the celebratory dogpile.

Don’t get me wrong I love the holiday season and the whole “Getting together to eat with the family”, but the basic fundamental reasons we celebrate holidays such as thanksgiving, and christmas seem to have some shrouded secrets, or just blatant miss-information. First of all Thanksgiving is in celebration of European colonists that conquered the American continent and enslaved an entire population of Native Americans. Likewise a lot of people like to explain thanksgiving as if it was all peaceful and great ! Well i’m here to tell you, and all that read that this is not the correct story. It went more a long the lines of this, Christopher Columbus, and said europeans showed up thinking the American continent was really the Indian sub continent, and this is why we still call Native American’s (Indians) at least some of us. After we slaughtered, raped, and pillaged villages, towns, and gatherings we then turned the left over “indians” into slave’s and made them prepare us their foods and delecacies so the european colonists could hi-jack all these wonderful Native American delecaceis and keep for themselves. It is important that we never forget that this is the true history of the situation. Ofcourse since we have won all the wars and were allowed to re-write all the history we made it sound all nice and pretty. For one I will never be a parent or a fellow citizen that tries to pass a long false information, and that is why this article isn’t that big. It is basic: Instead of coming here and being nice and sharing with the Native Americans, We enslaved and turned them into servants and in return they served us thanksgiving, and we have enjoyed ever since.

It lied there. Forgotten, caked in the dried blood of what may have been a Russian Cossack, or a Bri

It lied there. Forgotten, caked in the dried blood of what may have been a Russian Cossack, or a British Dragoon. Perhaps, it was the blood of a general or, perhaps, just of a simple infantryman. The soft grey blade rested amongst the stems of grass, it’s grim ornamentation glistening in the noon sun.
I touched the hilt and felt the twisted leather’s rough texture underneath my palm. I pulled it free from it’s prison and raised it above my head. Unlike what I had heard from those who tell stories, it did not shine brilliantly. The only thing that happened was that more light was cast upon the scratched, bloody surface.
I wondered, with some childish excitement, who could have held a sword as fine as this. It could have been a mounted cavalryman or an officer, perhaps even a general! I lowered it and dragged it’s edge along the grass, watching the grass bending underneath the blade. Holding it in my hand, I could feel the power, the essence of it’s glorious owner overtaking me. I imagined that I was the Emperor himself, riding into battle, the cavalry of the Guard struggling to keep up with me and artillery firing in the distance, the loud explosions frightening man and beast alike. Of course, that’s not how it happens. He doesn’t ride into battle like a suicidally brave soldier. He stays behind the lines and plans, thoughts and strategies swirling in his mind, until he comes up with something so perfect that it cannot fail. And, usually, it doesn’t. He has tasted defeat, of course, but not nearly as much as his enemies.
Slowly dragging the sword behind me, I left the field and stood on the road that led to a city. I imagined that along this road with me walk the grenadiers, fusiliers and many other soldiers, the music of the drummers ringing in my ears, the song of these frightening citizen-soldiers striking fear into the hearts of the enemy.
I sang with them that day. I walked along the dusty dirt road and sang every song I knew, whether it was a marching song I heard from the storytellers or a lullaby my mother taught me.
I could see the ghosts of the past coming back to life in the fields around me. Tens of thousands of soldiers rose from the fields, like armies doomed to fight for an eternity. To my sides stood the fusiliers, the glorious Guard, the cuirassiers and carabiniers with their shining armour. On the opposite side stood the the vile enemy, who only come to burn the land, steal treasure and enslave us.
As quickly as they appeared, the ghosts vanish. I sit down in the shade of a tree and wait, minutes passing slowly as I lean on the sword, staring at a ditch in front of me. Perhaps, this reality is better than the one I imagined. It is peaceful now. The sea is not far. Birds sing as they soar across the sky and the lazy spring dust settles upon the road I’ve walked since I was born. The snow had already melted and the may sun sends it’s warmth down to us earth dwellers.
I heard something and looked to the skies. It sounded like a dragon, roaring and spitting fire, but there was nothing.
I stood once more and walked into the centre of the road. Dust was being raised in the distance.
This was something I had not seen before.
Slowly, it was moving towards me – the cloud of dust, so thick I couldn’t see anything. It was frightening, but I held firm the sword and stood my ground. It was closer now and I could make out what was coming.
Barrels jutted like spikes from the cloud as the tanks neared, the black crosses on their sign appearing as the eyes of the beast. Tracks pressed into the dirt, but the war machines moved swiftly.
My father had spoken of them. He saw some, in the War. The roaring returned and I looked up. This time, the sky was filled with dark shapes. Many dark shapes, similar to still birds, their wings extended. Hundreds, maybe.
The dust cloud was now only a few kilometres away and I could see the trucks, the war machines, artillery. I stood on the side of the road, to let them by.
The steel beast passed me, it’s dark grey frame like a monster from ghost stories. They were all grey. The machines, the trucks, the artillery and even the soldiers. A single man broke off the final column and approached me. He asked me what was I doing here and I answered, with unnecessary bravado, that I was watching for the enemy and defending my homeland. He just laughed.
He removed a small blue helmet from his side and placed it on my head. Now, I was a real soldier. With another laugh, he stood back up and appeared much taller than he was before. He grinned down at me and said, with a heavy accent:
“To protect your homeland, you’ll need a lot more than a stick and a helmet.”
And then he left, running after his platoon. I dropped the stick, which until now was a sword, and ran towards home. That day, I learned a lesson. Sometimes, the enemy is far closer thank you think. And sometimes, he is not even my enemy.

Jennifer had just finished swallowing her dinner and while I watched her digest the little furry bal

Jennifer had just finished swallowing her dinner and while I watched her digest the little furry ball that once had been a sweet white mouse, I started thinking of this vaccine they wanted us all to take. Every even tiniest cell of my body felt disgust when I even tried to think of taking it. I couldn’t tell why, but what they were trying to give us sounded oh so very fishy to me and for nothing in the world I would have taken it, but its consistence puzzled me. Beside it being untested and developed incredibly quickly, the ingredients weren’t the healthiest ones. And yet. One of them was a strong disinfectant also used in treatments of deadly venoms. That’s about when I turned my computer, an old mac I’d learned to love, but with the slowest connection ever, on. It took ages to load and in the meantime I went to look at my physics homework. To be honest, I really hate physics. Well, not hate. People use the word hate far too quickly these days. But in this moment, with a religion essay and a pile of work in front of me I’d rather be doing do some physics exercises and pretend I’d done really hard work for the whole evening when in truth I’d only solved two problems. In my opinion, physicians are looking for too much power, as knowledge means power and trying to know everything is too much power to not corrupt someone. I’m more into philosophy and languages, something I can rely on since I grew up bilingual – french and german. What I looked up when my computer finally turned its light on was “deadly poison”. I bumped into a list of the nine most deadly venoms on the planet and even though that wasn’t what I was really trying to find, some macabre voice in my head urged me to read on as soon as I’d gotten to the point of “excruciating pain”. I imagined myself writing novels as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and bumped into the well known story of that journalist that was put silent by some secret police in 1978. That’s when the internet passed out and my mother stalked up behind me to get a sneak peak on what I was doing. My mother’s a ninja, really. She can stealth around the house and there’s no way you know she’s there, watching you, just so. I’d like to say that she asked me, “What’s that, darling?” but all she said was “That’s no physics.” I jumped. Luckily in that moment the phone rang and since nobody in this house is able to pick up the phone, I’m the very original phone lady with as many rights as a secretary in the early twenties. My friend Jessica always asks me why it’s always me who picks up the phone. She’s only known me for two months – exchange student from the US. It’s often hard to talk to her, especially lately. Reasons why Jessica annoys me so much: – She supports the war in Iraq because her boyfriend’s in the war and she feels like people offend him when they say they’re against war. – She’s always sorry. “How are you?” – “I’m okay. Bit tired.” – “Oh, I’m sorry.” Like HUH? What should she be sorry about? Did she do anything to be sorry? I’ll give her something to be sorry about! – She always says I’m “adorable”. You know, I’m the kind of leader-person. I don’t order people around, ever, but when I say something then people usually do it. I’m not likely to be challenged. Too strong personality, some say. And it’s a good thing, because you see, I’m small, a real midget – even for a girl. 5′3″. You got to get some respect somewhere, you know? And it’s hard to feel taken seriously when people go around tell you, “Awwww you’re so adooooorable!” However, on the phone wasn’t Jessica, but Eli. And Eli was crying on the phone. Almost hysterically, and all I could say was, “No, honey, don’t cry, shh, shh!” and maybe eventually I got her to stop crying and tell me what was wrong. What she first said that was wrong: I don’t know!!!!!!!! What she later told me that was wrong: – School. Teen girls at school are terrible. One of them told her that “if you won’t change you’ll never make friends in life, you know?” – note that I am taking a very snobby voice when acting that stupid little bitch. Making my friend feel bad, what a whore. School’s something that’s really freaky and I don’t know if everybody thinks the way I do while going through it or if it’s just me, but something is terribly wrong with the current school system in Switzerland. More to that later.

If you are in the mood for a European tourist destination, you should consider the Latium region of

If you are in the mood for a European tourist destination, you should consider the Latium region of central western Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Latium, also known as Laszio, is the region that includes Italy’s capital Rome, the Eternal City. Because it is so easy to find articles describing the multiple pleasures of Rome, we are going to write about the lesser-known attractions of Latium. This article focuses on Latium east of Rome. A companion article describes Latium west of Rome.

Tivoli is the famous site of Hadrian’s Villa, a getaway retreat for that famous Roman emperor. He ran the empire from this villa during the latter years of his rule. The site exceeds a square kilometer (over 250 acres), It contains more than thirty buildings. The Vatican Museums contain much of this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s decorations and statues.

Villa d’Este is another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tivoli. It is a beautiful water garden, reminiscent of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This villa was founded in the mid-Sixteenth Century by a son of Lucrezia Borgia. One ‘pathway’ is called the Avenue of One Hundred Fountains. Be sure that you see the Fontana di Rome, a scale model of Ancient Roman, demolished but partially rebuilt.

The town of Ninfa was destroyed during the Fourteenth Century. For some six hundred years it lay in ruins, largely because of the malarial mosquitoes in the nearby marshes. And then in 1920 an aristocratic English artist, Ada Wilbraham, married into the Caetani family that had been given the city way back in 1297 by a Caetani Pope. Wilbraham started the restoration that has continued to this day. The site includes a bridge and seven churches from Roman times, a castle, and the city wall.

Anzio, a resort city of some 45,000 people was the birthplace of the Roman Emperors Caligula and Nero. In 1944 it was the site of a major World War II battle, Operation Shingle. Visit the Anzio Beachhead British Military Cemetery, the Beachhead Museum, and the American Military Cemetery in nearby Nettuno.

Latium cuisine is abundant. The best cuts of meat were reserved for the rich. The poor had to make do with the rest, including feet, heart, and the like. See our companion article I Love Touring Italy – Eastern Latium for a sample menu, additional information on Latium wines, and an in-depth examination of its tourist attractions. While today Latium is not known for its wine in the distant past Falernum, a Latium red was the hit of Ancient Rome.

When the Czech President held the rotating EU presidency of old, he made a speech regarding the Climate Change Lobby. Here is an exert of that speech.

I’ll add my voice for a public inquiry into the whole Climate Change kerfuffle. The fact the researchers sat on the original data is enough to make one suspicious. If they have nothing to hide, they’ll have nothing to fear, right? Or does that just apply to the underclass?

At least eight people have been killed in an explosion that happened at Arsenal 31, ammunitions depot on the outskirts of Ulyanovsk, 900km (550 miles) south-east of Moscow, Russia. This explosion comes within 10 days after explosions tore through the same site, the defense ministry says.

A bomb disposal squad was working on the site, loading live ammunition onto a lorry when the blast occurred. All the people killed are reported to be members of the squad. Two people were also injured in the accident. The blast took place at 1430hrs local time on Monday, when the team was clearing the affected area in the naval base which had been affected by the earlier accident on November 13.

The earlier explosions and resulting fire had left two soldiers dead when they attempted to decommission the weapons that were left after the fire had been put off.

The regional emergency ministry branch had previously warned the local residents that it was carrying out “planned detonation of unexploded shells” from the arms depot. The ministry had also promised that it was following all “safety measures“.

Russian ammunition depots as well as much of the ammunition still dates back to Soviet era and the ageing arsenal has been a major cause of concern. This is not the first time that such a mishap has occurred.

President Dmitry Medvedev is scheduled to visit Ulyanovsk on Tuesday to meet Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in a bid to resolve the Azerbaijan-Armenia dispute over Nagorny Karabakh and to inaugurate a square named after Aliyev’s late father and former Azerbaijani leader, Heidar Aliyev.

Investigations are under way into both incidents. At the time of the 13 November incident, officials said artillery shells and torpedoes were kept at the arsenal.
