Gestern fand ich auf TM-Screenmania eine detaillierte Weltkarte, wie ich sie noch nie gesehen hatte. Denn Karten kennt man aus dem Atlas, dem Geographiebuch, oder PC-Rollenspielen. Aber doch nicht aus einem Rennspiel, oder?

Die wunderbar detailliert gezeichnete Karte, offenbar von Sebulba erstellt, zeigt euch alle wichtigen Orte der TrackMania-Welt: Die kleine “Island”-Insel, das “Stadium” in der Stadt und das “Snow”-Gebirge.

Die Karte soll anzeigen, welche Regionen der Erde ich “besucht” habe. Bis jetzt sind es noch nicht allzuviele. Die Länder, die hier rot gekennzeichnet sind, sind die besuchten. Allerdings liegen die Besuche schon sehr lange zurück. So war ich in Ägypten von 1976 bis 1977, dann 1978 nochmal für vier Wochen. Ebenso Sambia. Dort war ich 1980 für zwei Monate, später dann nochmal für drei Wochen. In der letzten zeit habe ich es nichtmal bis Spanien geschafft, wo doch eigentlich ~~jeder der was auf sich hält~~ jeder mal am Ballermann gewesen sein muss, um mitreden zu können. Naja – das leidige Thema Ballermann – da kann man sicher endlose Elogen verfassen. Zu einem Ergebnis, das allen gerecht wird kommt man da sicher nicht. Entweder man mag diese Art des Urlaubs, oder man hasst sie. Ich persönlich kann dem garnichts abgewinnen. Es ist für mich kein Urlaub, Abend für Abend durch die Clubs zu ziehen und “Spaß” zu haben. Ich bevorzuge ruhige Plätze und Futter für meine Kamera. Vieleicht falle ich damit aus dem Rahmen, aber ich mache lieber eine Radtour, hier vor Ort und nehme die Kamera mit, als ich irgendwo in die Welt fliege um an Sauforgien teilzunehmen. Ich tauge nichtmal als Pauschaltourist, weil ich das Land erleben will, wo ich Urlaub mache….

”CHANGE HAS COME TO AMERICA” – THE WORLD REACTS http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ I read in Huffington Press Blog. But how about Africa and the rest of the World?

I was pleased to hear Bishop Tutu speak up and was congratulating. MY hope would be to revisit AFRICA BEYOND POVERTY. Lots of work done between 1993 and 1995 with strong support from Bishop Tutu but also the Finish and Dutch governments, and also revisit not just “footprints”, but proportions and consequences.

Lots of work was lost as the event was so much contested and as our conference president “passed away” the day after the Conference in Nairobi in 1995 – losts of work, content and vistas have been lost – the central outcomes and workshops not even published ! Only some big potatoe speakers were published – as we expereicne that in too many technical-scientific-economic-political conferences.
But AFRICA BEYOND POVERTY http://benking.de/Global-Change/globalstability.html
was not only different, but timely and critical – if you consider the urgencies and importancies – proportions and consequences “touched”.

I hope there is a chance to revisit and up-date – so we can ask the contributors to have their up-dated contribution in ! AND THE ISSUES so get tabled.
We should involve the sponsoring governments – and also our new OBAMA – and involve Tutu, Pentii,… and others of the drivers, stakeholders and risktakers form 1995.
please check out “AFRICA and the WORLD BEYOND POVERTY” and certain sections like ECOLOGY and ETHICS – not just talks like ROBUST PATHS and REBOUND EFFECT Papers which have been published widely…

One step would be to revisit scales and proportions, how come that we still have a distorted world-map-picture in our minds and schools – and very oftern also on our monitors !
OBAMA might want to revisit the WEST WING series and our Earth Literacy – Map Alphabetisation efforts with the UN Decade for Sustainability Education UNESCO-ESD.

It would be silly to just blame George W. Bush, as he never really has been alone outside of his “sweet isolation”, so I asked 2 weeks ago the Nobel Peace-Laureate José Ramos-Horta from East Timor – he as president and being with the UN, a globally active and politcally insightful person all his life – I asked, if he was aware of how strange pictures guide our policy bodies and leaders – and he was not aware but had always wondered why traveling the miles traveling 3 days in his country and the miles traveling 3 days for example in Europe where sooo different. But oldies seem to have forgotten to check if they are puzzeled. But I hope Obama is young and curious enough in his mind and having been in the FareEast and Africa – to revist the West Wing series on WorldMaps after looking at the different shape and size of AFRICA on the WorldMap of the SAME ! United Nations organisation ! (UNESCO) – nobody seems to care – even when the issue has een posted and distributed widely !

I’ve been wanting to knit a pair of hats, the southern and northern hemispheres. I found some Queensland Collection Kathmandu DK tweed that looked perfect. The colors are perfectly earthy. I found a map of the world, played around in Illustrator, and made a map 100 stitches wide.

My first problem was placing all the shaping along the edges, which looks great on a map, but would make for a funky hat.

So I adjusted everything to be a projection map, and decided to start work at the north pole. Here’s North America:

Does it look a little weird? Take a look Asia:

That doesn’t look right. Europe?

Darn it. Darn it! I get to rip out all this glorious intarsia and decide if I want to flip the chart or work from the bottom up. Sigh….

สืบเนื่องจากอะซานฉบับที่แล้วพูดถึงการรณรงค์ให้มักกะฮฺเป็นศูนย์กลางของโลก ผมจึงขอนำเสนอประเด็นของแผนที่โลกในอีกมุมมองหนึ่งที่เราๆ คิดไม่ถึงกัน

ตั้งแต่เด็กเป็นต้นมา เราก็มองเห็นแต่แผนที่โลกแบบเดียวเท่านั้น ดังรูปข้างล่าง

แผนที่โลกที่เห็นอยู่นี้ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาจากวิธีคิดแบบ The Mercator Projection (1569) โดย Gerardus Mercator มีข้อเด่นคือสามารถแสดงรูปร่างหน้าตาของแต่ละประเทศในโลกได้ใกล้เคียงกับรูปทรงจริงตามโลกที่เป็นทรงกลม แต่นั่นก็ทำให้เราต้องแลกระหว่าง “รูปทรงที่แท้จริง” กับ “ขนาดที่แท้จริง” ของแต่ละประเทศ หากต้องการให้ประเทศต่างๆ ของแผนที่โลกมีรูปทรงที่ถูกต้อง ก็ต้องยอมให้ขนาดที่แท้จริงของประเทศผิดไปจากความเป็นจริง

ใช่ครับ ผมกำลังจะบอกว่า รูปทรงของแต่ละประเทศในแผนที่โลกที่เราใช้อยู่ไม่ได้บอกขนาดที่แท้จริงของมัน เช่น

ทวีปยุโรปกับทวีปอเมริกาใต้ ดูจากภาพเราจะเห็นว่า รูปทรงของทวีปยุโรปใหญ่กว่าทวีปอเมริกาใต้อย่างเห็นได้ชัด แต่เอาเข้าจริง ทวีปอเมริกาใต้กลับมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าทวีปยุโรปเกือบ 2 เท่า (ทวีปยุโรปมีพื้นที่จริงๆ 3.8 ล้านตารางไมล์ ส่วนทวีปอเมริกาใต้มีพื้นที่จริงๆ 6.9 ล้านตารางไมล์)

ทวีปแอฟริกากับอดีตสหภาพโซเวียต ดูจากภาพเราจะเห็นว่า รูปทรงของอดีตสหภาพโซเวียตใหญ่กว่าทวีปแอฟริกาอย่างเห็นได้ชัด แต่เอาเข้าจริง ทวีปแอฟริกากลับมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าอดีตสหภาพโซเวียต (อดีตสหภาพโซเวียตมีพื้นที่จริงๆ 8.7 ล้านตารางไมล์ ในขณะที่ทวีปแอฟริกามีพื้นที่ถึง 11.6 ล้านตารางไมล์)

เกาะกรีนแลนด์กับประเทศจีน ดูจากภาพเราจะเห็นว่า รูปทรงของเกาะกรีนแลนด์ใหญ่กว่าประเทศจีนอย่างเห็นได้ชัด แต่เอาเข้าจริง ประเทศจีนแผ่นดินใหญ่กลับมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าเกาะกรีนแลนด์มากมายนัก (ประเทศจีนมีพื้นที่ 3.7 ล้านตารางไมล์ ส่วนเกาะกรีนแลนด์มีขนาดเพียง 0.8 ล้านตารางไมล์ เทียบกันไม่ได้เลย)

ด้วยวิธีการสร้างแผนที่โลกแบบ Mercator projection เราจะพบว่า หากประเทศหนึ่งยิ่งมีพิกัดห่างไกลออกจากเส้นศูนย์สูตร (Equator) และเข้าใกล้กับขั้วโลก (poles) มากเท่าใด ‘ขนาด’ ที่แท้จริงของแต่ละประเทศ ยิ่งถูกบิดเบือนมากเท่านั้น

ดังนั้น ประเทศที่อยู่แถบเหนือของโลก (The Norths) ซึ่งโดยมากเป็นประเทศพัฒนาแล้ว อย่างสหรัฐอเมริกาและประเทศในทวีปยุโรป เลยดูใหญ่กว่าความเป็นจริง เมื่อเทียบกับประเทศแถบใต้ของโลก (The Souths) ที่โดยมากมักเป็นประเทศกำลังพัฒนา อย่างประเทศในทวีปแอฟริกา และละตินอเมริกา

ซ้ำยังจัดวางเอาทวีปยุโรปเป็นศูนย์กลางของโลกอีกด้วย นอกจากนี้เส้นศูนย์สูตรที่แบ่งโลกออกเป็นสองส่วนเท่าๆ กันนั้น ในแผนที่โลกชุดนี้กลับแบ่งให้พื้นที่ประเทศซีกโลกเหนือมากถึง (60%) มากกว่าประเทศทางซีกใต้ซึ่งมีเพียง (40%) ทั้งที่ในความเป็นจริง ฝ่ายเหนือมีพื้นที่เพียง 18.9 ล้านตารางไมล์ ขณะที่ฝ่ายใต้มีพื้นที่ถึง 38.6 ล้านตารางไมล์

และแผนที่อันนี้แหละที่บรรจุอยู่ในตำราเรียนของเด็กทั้งโลก อีกทั้งกลายเป็นแผนที่โลกทางการของหลายประเทศในโลก สร้างภาพให้คนทั้งโลกเชื่อว่ายุโรปเป็นศูนย์กลางของโลก ทำให้คนทั่วไปหลงเชื่อภาพลักษณ์ความยิ่งใหญ่ของประเทศฝ่ายเหนือ อย่างไม่รู้เนื้อรู้ตัว

อย่างน้อยๆ ผมก็อยากจะบอกว่า เรายังมีคนที่ออกมาท้าทายแผนที่โลกแบบที่ว่านี้อยู่เหมือนกัน แผนที่ใช้วิธีคิดแบบ Equal-Area Projection ที่โด่งดังที่สุดก็คือแผนที่ของ Dr. Arno Peters นักประวัติศาสตร์ชาวเยอรมัน (1974) ซึ่งเป็นแผนที่โลกที่ให้ความสำคัญกับ ‘ขนาด’ ที่ถูกต้องของแต่ละประเทศ จนเป็นที่โต้เถียงกันมากในวงการแผนที่โลกในขณะนั้น

Peters World Map ปรับสัดส่วนที่ผิดส่วนตามตัวอย่างข้างต้น ให้ถูกต้องสอดคล้องกับโลกที่เป็นจริง ประเทศต่างๆ ล้วนมีขนาดตามจริงไม่ “ใหญ่” เกินจริง ประเทศทางใต้ก็ได้คืนขนาดที่แท้จริงของตนกลับคืนมา

ผู้นิยม Peters Map ให้เหตุผลว่า แผนที่โลกมาตรฐานจัดทำขึ้นสมัยยุโรปครอบงำเป็นมหาอำนาจโลก เต็มไปด้วยอาณานิยมทั่วโลก จึงแฝงไปด้วย ‘อคติ’ ที่เอนเอียงไปทางผลประโยชน์ของประเทศแถบเหนือ นั่นเป็นเหตุผลว่า ทำไมแผนที่ฉบับมาตรฐาน Mercator Map ถึงถูก ‘เลือก’ ให้ผลิตซ้ำรุ่นแล้วรุ่นเล่า และเผยแพร่ทั่วโลก จนกลายเป็นแผนที่โลกทางการของหลายประเทศในโลก

ปิดท้ายประเด็นแผนที่โลกกันด้วยแผนที่โลกแบบ Upside-down Map ที่กลับทิศเหนือใต้ ออสเตรเลียมาอยู่ทางเหนือ ยุโรปไปอยู่ทางใต้ เพราะเอาเข้าจริงเวลาเรามองโลกมาจากอวกาศ ขั้วโลกเหนือไม่จำเป็นต้องอยู่ข้างบนเสมอไปนี่ ก็เพราะโลกมันกลม

Wie sähe die Weltkarte wohl aus, wenn man sie nicht physisch oder politisch zeichnen würde? Wie sähe es wohl aus, wenn man mal die Kontinente und Länder darstellt, in dem man sie ihrer Größe nach anteilig der Verteilung des Reichtums nach darstellen würde? Oder anteilig nach dem Zugang zu Trinkwasser oder Öl? Oder wie schaut eine solche Weltkarte aus, wenn man nach der globalen Verteilung von Kriegstoten schaut? Analphabetenraten? Säuglingssterblichkeit? Bruttoinlandsprodukt? Zugang zu Bildung?

Mit all diesen Fragen setzt sich die Forschungsgruppe “Soziale und räumliche Ungleichheiten” der University of Sheffield (SASI ) auseinander und betreibt dazu eine hervorragende Internetseite: Worldmapper. Der Claim “The world as you’ve never seen it before” verspricht nicht zuviel. Über 300 Karten mit verschiedenen Dateninhalten stellen die Forscher inzwischen online und machen auf diesem Wege globale Ungleichheiten und Ungerechtigkeiten visuell deutlich. Die Seite ist nicht nur Interessant für NGOs, Politiker, Schüler oder Studenten – auch als interessierter Internetsurfer mit einem etwas weiteren Blick sollte man bei Worldmapper mal vorbeiklicken. Der ein oder andere Aha!-Effekt wird sich sicherlich einstellen!

wie schon vor längerer zeit hier erwähnt benutze ich das service worldmap von structuretoobig.com.

seit kurzem auch mit virutal earth unterstützung. damit gibts jetzt bessere zoom möglichkeiten.

grün: 1-49 hits
orange: bis ~50 hits
rot: ab 50 hits
