[Steve Wozniak], Last of the freelance hackers and Greatest swordfighter in the world, lives a hacker life you couldn’t even dream about. The folks over at medGadget ran into him and learned about his watch. In their interview (embedded after the break) [Steve] shows off the Nixie tube wristwatch that we can only assume he created himself.

The watch consists of two tiny tubes, a PCB, and battery. There must be an accelerometer in there because the display is switched off unless the watch is held at a certain configurable angle. Once held in the correct position the display flashes the hours, then the minutes.

The time is set by two buttons inside the watch’s case. [Steve] goes on to explain the trepidation his fellow passengers have when he disassembles the watch mid-flight and starts to monkey around with the buttons inside. Not to be stopped at electronic tomfoolery, he also shares his delight in sneaking ceramic knives on board so that he can properly cut his steaks.

Lifestyle aside, the small Nixie clock packages we’ve seen don’t even come close to this. We assume this is pretty hard on the battery and wonder if the watch gets hot if you’re stuck in a long meeting and constantly looking at the time. We can get over both of those limitations just for the cool factor alone.

Update: Reader [Stephen] left a comment pointing to the origin of  the watch. It is controlled by a PIC microprocessor, boasts a four-month battery life at 50 viewings per day, and there’s some code available.  It is for sale but currently out of stock.

Dawno dawno temu istniał wóz rozwożący szczęście. Jeździł po różnych krainach na swoich magicznych kołach z dębowego drzewa. W zaprzęgu były dwa konie – kary i śniady, a sam woźnica był miłym staruszkiem z długą, siwą brodą. Wóz jeździł dosyć szybko i nieczęsto zawitał w jakiejkolwiek mieścinie czy wiosce na dłużej.

Pewnego dnia pojawił się śmiałek, który postanowił zatrzymać wóz na dłużej. Ustawił zaporę na polnej drodze, po której owy pojazd miał jechać. Zaraz gdy usłyszał tupot koni stanął przed swoją barykadą, dumnie krzyżując ręce na piersi. Niestety dla niego, trafił pod kopyta pędzących koni a sama zapora wydawała się jakby była zrobiona ze słomy, gdy staruszek ze swoim zaprzęgiem przejeżdżał przez nią.

Cóż, nie staje się szczęściu na drodze.

Uit onderzoek van Direct Wonen blijkt dat de gemiddelde huurprijs van woningen in Nederland met 4,1 procent is gedaald ten opzichte van een jaar geleden.

In augustus 2009 werd voor een huurwoning gemiddeld 731 euro gevraagd. In dezelfde periode vorig jaar was de gemiddelde huurprijs 762 euro. De daling wordt volgens Direct Wonen veroorzaakt door een toename van het aanbod in de lagere prijsklasse (woningen tot 800 euro).

Uit het onderzoek blijkt ook dat in augustus het aanbod van nieuwe huurwoningen in Nederland met 1,9 procent licht gedaald is ten opzichte van dezelfde periode vorig jaar. Voor huurwoningen in de prijsklasse tot 800 euro bedraagt in augustus 2009 de gemiddelde huurprijs 505 euro. Een stijging van 0,8 procent ten opzichte van een jaar geleden. Het duurdere segment (huurwoningen vanaf 800 euro) laat een gemiddelde huurprijs zien van 1.134 euro. In dezelfde periode vorig jaar was de huurprijs 1.158 euro, een daling van 2,1 procent.

Amsterdam staat nog steeds aan kop als duurste stad van Nederland: de gemiddelde huurprijs steeg van 1.226 euro naar 1.320 euro ten opzichte van vorig jaar. Deze maand heeft Groningen, ondanks een lichte stijging van de huurprijs, de plek van Tilburg ingenomen als goedkoopste stad om een woning te huren. De gemiddelde huurprijs in Groningen bedraagt 475. In dezelfde periode vorig jaar kwam de gemiddelde huurprijs uit op 470 euro.

Zwolle laat deze maand de grootste prijsstijging zien. De gemiddelde huurprijs steeg met 7,7 procent en kwam uit op 525 euro. In dezelfde periode vorig jaar was de gemiddelde huurprijs in deze stad 487 euro. Hilversum laat met 15,1 procent de grootste daling van de gemiddelde huurprijs zien.

And with that statement, The Woz had his audience hooked. Not that he needed a hook, mind you, as over 700 people packed into a ballroom in Waterloo to hear him speak: that’s about, oh, 670 more than the original plan had assumed, according to Iain Klugman of Communitech.

User experience, design, and usability emerged as strong themes in Steve’s talk. I especially enjoyed hearing him give credit to Jef Raskin with first instilling these values at Apple, which you’ll find at around 21:20 in the recording:

One of the things Apple is good at is keeping things simple because we got a reputation in the early days for being oriented towards simplicity and ease of use. Largely came from one guy that came and joined Steve [Jobs] and I in the early days, and Jef Raskin was his name…. He said you should always take the effort to put the design effort into your product to make it work easy and well… I took that in my head to mean, the human is more important than the technology.

Many thanks to Communitech for organizing the event! And thanks to RIM also, for buying breakfast for such a huge crowd. Word on the street is this was the largest-ever turnout for a Techworking Breakfast.

ok, wir können nun richtig zitieren und richtig recherchieren, jetzt steht unserer karriere als journalist nichts mehr im wege.

als erstes kaufen wir uns ein cord-jacket, ein weisses hemd, verwaschene jeans und adidas tunrschuhe. das ganze krönen wir mit einer umhängetasche (möglichst von freitag). das ist notwendig, um uns von den reportern abzuheben. reporter tragen anorraks und suchen draussen (ja! auf  der strasse) nach geschichten und sprechen mit echten leuten und so.

wir aber sind journalisten. wir telefonieren, googlen und sprechen allerhöchstens mit menschen, wenn uns der lokalsender zu einer intellektuellen diskussion über das gerade medienbeherrschende thema (wahlweise wahlen, jugendgewalt oder jugendgewalt, evt auch wahlen) einlädt. da sitzen wir mit anderen journalisten in cord-sackos und diskutieren.

eine diskussion sieht so aus:

journi 1: ich denke, dass *zitat NZZ* und *zitat Weltwoche*

journi 2: so würde ich das aber nicht sehen. viel eher ist es doch so dass *zitat Zeit*, *zitat Süddeutsche”! Auch den aspekt der *zitat WOZ* muss man berücksichtigen.

moderator (auch ein journi): interessant! wie aber kommen wir dann zu *zitat FAZ* dessen *zitat spiegel* wir nicht berücksichtigt haben?

gut, wir müssen also lesen. möglichst die gängigen zeitungen, aus denen wir uns unsere differenzierte meinung zusammenschustern. merkt euch: als journalist hat man eine MEINUNG zu allem! und man kann sie durch FAKTEN untermauern. (fakten sind das zeugs, dass man in anderen zeitungen liest oder was man so zusammengooglen kann).

jetzt bauen wir unser ego aus. das geht ganz leicht. jedesmal, wenn wir unseren namen gedruckt sehen, wächst es um 11.7 prozent.  wenn unser zeugs von anderen journalisten zitiert wird, erlebt unser ego einen wachstumsschub von 27 prozent!

ok, wir können diskutieren und wir haben eine meinung. jetzt mieten wir uns eine zweitwohnung, weil unser ego inzwischen so angeschwollen ist, dass wir keinen platz mehr zuhause haben.

als nächstes lernen wir schreiben.

ihr denkt jetzt “schreiben? wieso schreiben? ich bin doch journi, wozu soll ich denn auch noch schreiben können?” aber meine lieben, ohne gehts nicht.

wenn ihr nicht schreiben wollt, geht zum fernsehen. aber fernseh-journis bräuchten einen eigenen workshop. eigentlich bräuchten die einen eigenen blog. nein, die bräuchten einen eigenen planeten!

No hay plazo que no se cumpla ni deuda que no se pague: el mítico CEO de Apple, Steve Jobs, anunció en enero de este año que tendría una baja de seis meses por asuntos médicos. Como recordarán, todos los blogs maqueros reventaron con la incertidumbre y los rumores de las causas que lo llevaron a esa decisión; se habló de muchas razones, entre las cuales volaba sombrío el fantasma del cáncer pancreático que lo aquejó. Lo último que se especuló fue un transplante hepático, que se habría realizado hace dos meses; esta noticia fue confirmada por James Eason, facultativo del hospital metodista de Memphis, Tennessee, lugar donde se llevó a cabo el procedimiento. Pues bien, junio ya se va, pasaron los seis meses y las luces de Su Steveza comienzan a verse de nuevo por los pasillos del campus de Apple en Cupertino.

La esperanza de verlo en la pasado WWDC al final no llegó a buen término, pero se supo estos días de Jobs gracias a la noticia de la gran venta de iPhones 3G S, en la cual se citan palabras del CEO: ‘los consumidores están votando y el iPhone está ganando‘. Eso, sumado a varios que dicen haberlo visto paseando por Infinity Loop y a otros (como Steve ‘Woz’ Wozniak) que cuentan que se le ve en excelente estado, hacen crecer la expectativa de su regreso a la empresa que reflotó de un fin seguro durante la segunda mitad de los noventa. 

Si bien Apple ha sobrevivido bastante bien sin la carismática figura de su CEO (gracias al trabajo de Phil Schiller y compañía), siempre es mejor que Jobs esté a la cabeza de la empresa… le da un toque místico que eleva aún más su imagen, además de situar el significado de la marca Apple en otro nivel, que quizá ninguna otra empresa puede alcanzar siquiera. En Cupertino pueden sobrevivir bien sin Steve, pero… ¿qué pasará cuando no regrese más? Buena pregunta.

 Eccellente. Raramente uso questa parola, e chi segue questo blog sa che se la uso riguardo ad un prodotto Microsoft deve proprio valerne la pena. Ho provato il loro nuovo motore di ricerca (Bing, appunto, ancora in fase beta) e l’ho trovato velocissimo. Ovviamente parliamo di decimi di secondo, ma non dico una bugia se mi sembra addirittura più rapido di Google. Fa cose diverse, più che a Google assomiglia a Wolfram Alpha, di cui avevo già parlato qualche giorno fa. Stando al video dimostrativo a questa pagina basterà digitare una domanda e Bing risponderà (ad esempio: dove andiamo a cena stasera?) non ordinando i risultati in termini di popolarità (e qui sta una delle differenze con Google) ma in base al contenuto delle pagine. Come ho detto prima è ancora in versione beta, staremo a vedere quando sarà pronto. Se lo provate adesso è velocissimo, riuscirà a rimanere così veloce anche quando ci saranno milioni di persone ad utilizzarlo? Comunque per ora ha già ottenuto la migliore pubblicità che poteva aspettarsi, visto che addirittura Steve Wozniak (co-fondatore della rivale Apple insieme a Steve Jobs) ne ha parlato come “la software demo più stupefacente che abbia mai visto”…

Der erste Kontakt fand im Büro statt. Da habe ich mich angesteckt. Eines Tages stand ein neuer Computer auf dem Schreibtisch. Auf dem Gehäuse prangte ein angebissener Apfel. Ein Mac, toll. Alle redeten damals davon, dass ja nur ein Macintosh von Apple das Wahre sei. Für mich war es erst mal ein Computer wie alle anderen vorher, ein Arbeitsgerät. Was für ein Irrtum! Nur wenige Wochen später kaufte ich meinen ersten eigenen Computer – einen Mac.

Schon einige Monate später habe ich ihn durch einen neuen, schnelleren ersetzt. Das geht jetzt seit zwölf Jahren so. Ich bin infiziert. 

Die Symptome stellten sich damals schnell ein: Fanatische Abwehrhaltung gegen alles, was auch nur entfernt mit Microsoft und Windows zu tun hatte; übertrieben liebevoller Umgang mit ein paar Kilo Metall, einer schon Ende der neunziger Jahre technisch überholten Ein-Tasten-Maus und einer klobigen Tastatur; ein seliges Lächeln beim Klang des Tuschs nach Druck auf den Startknopf.

Und wehe, jemand wagte, das Gerät als teuer, unnütz oder kompliziert zu bezeichnen – zehn wortreiche Minuten dauerte mein ebenso unausweichliches wie deutliches Plädoyer, mindestens. Der Mac wurde zu einem Teil meines Lebens, ein guter Freund, ein (meist) treuer Begleiter, ein Hilfsarbeiter. Und ein Statussymbol. 

”Apple hat keine Kunden, Apple hat Jünger”, hat mal jemand gesagt. Also bin ich ein Jünger. Kaum eine Marke hat so treue Fans wie das inzwischen mehr als 30 Jahre alte Unternehmen aus Cupertino in Kalifornien, das bekanntermaßen 1976 von Steve Jobs und Steve Wozniak in einer Garage gegründet worden war. Vielleicht abgesehen von Leica unter den Fotografen oder Harley-Davidson unter den Motorradfahrern.

Einen Mac zu haben, umgab und umgibt einen Menschen mit einer Aura – der des Exklusiven, des Besonderen. Denn Macs waren grundsätzlich teurer als andere PC. Mac-User waren deshalb immer eine vergleichsweise kleine Schar Individualisten, sie waren anders als der Rest der Welt und wollten es auch sein. Der Computer als Aufwertung des Egos – Apple förderte das nach Kräften, vor allem Steve Jobs. Wer kann schon von sich behaupten, in seiner Sprache für ein ganz neues Verb gesorgt zu haben. Das Englische “to steve” beschreibt die Strategie, Funktionen anderer Produkte in eigene einzubauen und so die Konkurrenz überflüssig zu machen. 



Als der erste Macintosh-Computer am 24. Januar 1984 auf den Markt kam, war das noch anders. Doch Steve Jobs wusste, wie man einen Mythos erzeugt: Seinen ersten großen Auftritt hatte der Macintosh zwei Tage zuvor in einem TV-Werbespot während der Superbowl-Übertragung, dem jährlichen Sportereignis in den USA. Der Spot war eine einzige Anspielung auf George Orwells “1984″: Menschen sitzen lethargisch vor einer Leinwand und lassen sich von einem Gesicht indoktrinieren – bis eine Frau, von Polizisten verfolgt, hereinstürmt und einen Hammer auf die Leinwand wirft, die daraufhin explodiert. “On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you’ll see why 1984 won‘t be like ‘1984′.”, lautete der Werbe-Claim am Ende: “Am 24. Januar stellt Apple Computer den Macintosh vor. Und Sie werden sehen, warum 1984 nicht sein wird wie ‘1984′”. Keine technischen Daten, kein Preis, nichts. Der Spot wurde nur ein einziges Mal gezeigt, ist heute ebenso legendär wie epochal und ein Renner bei YouTube.



Die Strategie des Vagen und Geheimnisvollen hatte auf Fans denselben Effekt wie die geschlossene Tür an Weihnachten auf Kinder. Apple ist ihr bis heute treu geblieben. Der Name Macintosh übrigens stammte von Apple-Entwickler Jef Raskin, dem Vater des Mac: Er gab dem Projekt kurzerhand den Namen seiner Lieblingsapfelsorte McIntosh, verschrieb sich dabei jedoch – ein Kult war geboren. 

Der Macintosh war revolutionär. Technisch, weniger optisch. Bildschirm und Rechner steckten in einem grauen kantigen Gehäuse von der Größe einer Weinkiste, was dem Gerät den liebevollen Beinamen Knubbel-Mac einbrachte. Anschalten, loslegen – das ging wirklich. Jeder Kaffeeautomat hat heute mehr Rechenleistung, damals allerdings rissen sich die Kunden darum, obwohl der Mac mit einem Verkaufspreis von rund 4000 D-Mark kein Schnäppchen war. Gesteuert wurde er mit der – bis dahin fast unbekannten – Maus, auf dem Bildschirm gab es erstmals Fenster, einen Desktop und einen Papierkorb – während die meisten Computer nur grüne Buchstaben auf schwarzem Grund zeigten.

Der Mac war angenehm anders: einfach.

Mit den iMacs brachte Apple 1998 Farbe in die graue Rechner-Welt: Die kultigen Kugel-Macs gab es in fruchtigen Farbtönen wie Blaubeere, Limette, Erdbeere, Traube, Mandarine; ein Jahr später kamen ebenso bunte iBooks in die Läden. Die Zeit der kunterbunten Rechenkisten ist inzwischen vorbei – das coole Weiß der zweiten iMac-Generation und der iPods, mit dem die Marke lange identifiziert wurde, ist Aluminium und Schwarz gewichen. 

Elf Macs habe ich im Laufe der Jahre wieder verkauft – immer nur, um mir den neusten leisten zu können. Und immer mit schlechtem Gewissen. Und Wehmut. Denn als ich sie weggab, waren sie immer noch auf der Höhe der Zeit. Eigentlich gab es keinen Grund, sich von einem Mac zu trennen – höchstens aus Versehen.

2007 brachte Apple mit dem MacBook Air eines der dünnsten Notebooks der Welt auf den Markt. Zu dünn für Steven Levy, Tester bei der US-Zeitschrift “Newsweek”: Er mischte es unter die Zeitungen auf seinem Tisch, das Notebook wanderte ins Altpapier und ward nie wieder gesehen. 

Die Zündschnur brennt. 

Natürlich gibt es auch objektive Gründe, keinen Mac zu besitzen. Auch Macs haben Fehler und Macken. Sie können einen Menschen zur Weißglut treiben. Die “Bombe” etwa aus den späten Neunzigern ist legendär – eine kleine Kugel mit Zündschnur auf dem Bildschirm zeigte an, dass man besser den Netzstecker zog und von vorne anfing. Und bis vor wenigen Jahren hatten Macs ein gravierendes Kommunikationsproblem – auf einem Apple erstellte Texte ließen sich in Windows nicht öffnen. Dieses Problem gibt es mitlerweile nicht mehr. Andersrum klappt das bis heute noch nicht vernünftig.



Zeitweise war sehr viel Gottvertrauen nötig, um nicht den Glauben an den Mac nicht zu verlieren – und nachdem sich die ersten Modelle einen Marktanteil von mehr als 50 Prozent gesichert hatten, wäre der Apfel Anfang der neunziger Jahre beinahe von der Bildfläche verschwunden. Nur wenige blieben dem Mac treu, als Apple glaubte, ohne Firmengründer Jobs auszukommen, schlechte Digitalkameras verkaufte und mit einer Flut von Rechnertypen Stammkunden vergraulte. Erst als Apple Jobs Ende der Neunziger zurückholte, ging es wieder aufwärts. 

Die Zahl der Infizierten steigt. Wer sich einmal mit dem Apfel angesteckt hat, wird ihn nicht wieder los. Ich habe es mit XP und Vista versucht, mit Linux, ohne Computer. Alles vergeblich. Jahrelang lauerte ich bei jeder Messeeröffnung auf Steve Jobs Satz “One more thing”, der das Neueste verhieß.

Fast jeden neuen Rechner habe ich mir angeschaut, jedes neue Programm getestet. Und natürlich ein iPhone gekauft, am ersten Tag, zehn Minuten nach Ladenöffnung. Ist ja auch ein Apfel drauf.”

I’ve been listening to Steve Wozniak’s autobiography, “iWoz: How I Invented the Personal Computer and Had Fun Along the Way.”  I downloaded it from audible because I had one credit left and I wanted to cancel my paid membership.  I needed something fast, without having to do much shopping.  I wanted to download something and cancel.  I knew if I started shopping, I’d get sidetracked and then forget and get charged another month.

So, The Woz’s book looked relatively interesting and I downloaded it.  I was expecting a dry, almost boring story.  I’m more of fiction reading guy, so I figured how interesting could a biography be?  Still, the idea of reading about life of the guy who invented the Apple computer intrigued me.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.  I’m probably about a quarter of the way through (it’s hard to tell on an audiobook) but I’m loving every minute of it.  I love the pranks he played.  I love the electronic discoveries he made.  I love the way he explains things and how enthusiastic he is.   I love how geeky his is/was.

And, the narrator, what a great fit for this book.  I’ve never met Woz, but I can easily believe this narrator (Patrick Lawlor) is him.  He sounds just the way I imagine Woz would sound.

It’s inspired me.  Woz was a math genius (or so he says.) I was out at Chapters (bookstore) last night and picked up two math books, one about infinity and one about interesting math principles.
